I'm Eight printable sheet

When I went into a classroom earlier this week, a child rushed up to tell me she was 8 that day.

Well, Happy Birthday to everyone who has a birthday today!

This challenge is about finding a variety of ways of asking questions which have the answer 8.

You might think of 6 + 2, or 22 - 14, or...

Try to create examples that use all the different mathematical ideas that you know about. Perhaps you could challenge yourself to find ways of making 8 that you think no-one else will have thought of. If you are not 8 years old, you might like to use your age instead of 8.

Power Users!

The "has" rule which says that certain items must be included (for the entry to be included).

Example: has 2,a,b,c means that an entry must have at least two of the letters a, b and c.

The "no" rule which means that some items from the list must not occur together.

Example: no 2,a,b,c means that an entry must not have two or more of the letters a, b and c.

The "pattern" rule is used to impose some kind of pattern to each entry.

Example: pattern c,* means that the letter c must be first (anything else can follow)

Put the rule on its own line:

Example: the "has" rule

a,b,c,d,e,f,g has 2,a,b

Combinations of a,b,c,d,e,f,g that have at least 2 of a,b or c

Rules In Detail

The "has" rule.

The word "has" followed by a space and a number. Then a comma and a list of items separated by commas.

The number says how many (minimum) from the list are needed for that result to be allowed.

Example has 1,a,b,c

Will allow if there is an a , or b , or c , or a and b , or a and c , or b and c , or all three a,b and c .

In other words, it insists there be an a or b or c in the result.

So {a,e,f} is accepted, but {d,e,f} is rejected.

Example has 2,a,b,c

Will allow if there is an a and b , or a and c , or b and c , or all three a,b and c .

In other words, it insists there be at least 2 of a or b or c in the result.

So {a,b,f} is accepted, but {a,e,f} is rejected.

The "no" Rule

The word "no" followed by a space and a number. Then a comma and a list of items separated by commas.

The number says how many (minimum) from the list are needed to be a rejection.

Example: n=5, r=3, Order=no, Replace=no

Which normally produces:

{a,b,c} {a,b,d} {a,b,e} {a,c,d} {a,c,e} {a,d,e} {b,c,d} {b,c,e} {b,d,e} {c,d,e}

But when we add a "no" rule like this:

a,b,c,d,e,f,g no 2,a,b

{a,c,d} {a,c,e} {a,d,e} {b,c,d} {b,c,e} {b,d,e} {c,d,e}

The entries {a,b,c}, {a,b,d} and {a,b,e} are missing because the rule says we can't have 2 from the list a,b (having an a or b is fine, but not together)

Example: no 2,a,b,c

Allows only these:

{a,d,e} {b,d,e} {c,d,e}

It has rejected any with a and b , or a and c , or b and c , or even all three a,b and c .

So {a,d,e) is allowed (only one out of a,b and c is in that)

But {b,c,d} is rejected (it has 2 from the list a,b,c)

Example: no 3,a,b,c

Allows all of these:

{a,b,d} {a,b,e} {a,c,d} {a,c,e} {a,d,e} {b,c,d} {b,c,e} {b,d,e} {c,d,e}

Only {a,b,c} is missing because that is the only one that has 3 from the list a,b,c

The "pattern" Rule

The word "pattern" followed by a space and a list of items separated by commas.

You can include these "special" items:

  • ? (question mark) means any item. It is like a "wildcard".
  • * (an asterisk) means any number of items (0, 1, or more). Like a "super wildcard".

Example: pattern ?,c,*,f

Means "any item, followed by c, followed by zero or more items, then f"

So {a,c,d,f} is allowed

And {b,c,f,g} is also allowed (there are no items between c and f, which is OK)

But {c,d,e,f} is not, because there is no item before c.

Example: how many ways can Alex, Betty, Carol and John be lined up, with John after Alex.

Use: n=4, r=4, order=yes, replace=no.

The result is:

{Alex,Betty,Carol,John} {Alex,Betty,John,Carol} {Alex,Carol,Betty,John} {Alex,Carol,John,Betty} {Alex,John,Betty,Carol} {Alex,John,Carol,Betty} {Betty,Alex,Carol,John} {Betty,Alex,John,Carol} {Betty,Carol,Alex,John} {Carol,Alex,Betty,John} {Carol,Alex,John,Betty} {Carol,Betty,Alex,John}

8 Popular Different Ways To Make Coffee At Home

Looking for different ways to make coffee at home? Read this article for each method that makes coffee-making enjoyable.

Different ways to make coffee

For centuries, coffee enthusiasts have been looking for different ways to extract the finest flavor from organic coffee beans. In their quest to improve the quality of Java, a plethora of coffee making equipment and accessories have been invented.

From manual brewing methods to automatic coffee makers with smart controls, the different ways to make coffee at home have highly revolutionized in the last few years. Although the methods vary, they all have a common objective – deliver a cup of purely aromatic and flavorful coffee.

It boils down to personal preferences, taste, technique, and time. While the older generation still swears by the manual brewing method for more control over the coffee-making process, the younger lot prefers the convenience offered by the automatic ways to brew coffee in smart coffee makers.

If you ask your Italian grandmother, she is sure to argue brewing with a Moka pot delivers the best tasting coffee in the world. The growing interest in gourmet-style of coffee making has led to the discovery of different ways of making coffee at home

While I totally stand by different ways to make coffee at home that please taste buds and awaken the senses, I will touch on the most popular styles of coffee making in this article.

1. Pour Over/ Drip Method

The drip method using a paper filter or coffee cone is one of the oldest and cheapest ways to make coffee at home. The brewing method is also very simple and straightforward.

You first need to ground the coffee beans evenly. Then, pour hot water over the ground coffee placed in a paper filter or cone.

The gravity does its job and the brewed coffee passed through the grounds and drips into the pot or cup. The coffee cones are usually made of stainless steel, glass, or ceramic material. The shape of the cone and the type of filter used to influence the flavor.

Grind size : Medium-Fine (you feel a little smooth when you rub with the finger) Brew time : 2.5 to 3 minutes Ratio : 1:16 Flavor : pure and strong

What I like about the Pour Over/ Drip Method

The sheer pleasure of making coffee in the traditional way cannot be expressed in words. There is something very authentic about this method. To get the best results, you must grind the coffee beans medium-fine to coarse texture.

It takes about 3 minutes to brew coffee in the drip method and it is easy to clean. This is also a highly portable device and you can carry coffee grounds, cup, cone, and filter with you while traveling.

What I don’t like about the Pour Over/ Drip Method

It takes the right size of coffee grounds and lots of patience to create that perfect cup of morning Joe or wake-up coffee . If you think you can manage to do this every morning before leaving for work, you are probably lying to yourself. Furthermore, the extra accessories needed for brewing may make this an expensive hobby.

2. Pour Over: Chemex

Chemex

If you wish to impress your date with your coffee-making skills then Chemex can create the magic and bring out that 90s gentleman in you! Chemex is an elegant and well-built pour over flask that was developed in 1941 by Dr. Peter Schlumbohm.

This coffee brewing method uses specially created Chemex paper filters that are about 20-30% thicker and heavier than the standard filters. To make coffee, wet the filter and add the coffee grounds. Now pour hot water slowly and let the brewed coffee drip into the pot.

Grind size : Similar to table salt Brew time : 3-4 minutes Ratio : 4-5 tablespoon in 2.5 cups of water yields 6 cups Flavor : balanced, refined, floral, and sweet notes

It’s a fun way to experiment with different varieties of coffee beans and I love to impress my guests with this magnificent cup of coffee. I love the fact that it can brew multiple cups at a time. If you love a dash of sweet notes in your coffee, you must try the Chemex as the bonded filter hold the oils and sediments, preventing the brew from turning bitter.

You need a lot of accessories which makes this an expensive and time taking way to brew coffee at home. Maintaining the vessel is also not easy and you will need a buy a long-handled brush to clean it properly.

3. French Press

French press coffee at center of a wooden block

I am sure all of you have that one friend who is ready to roll at any time and a French Press is like that awesome buddy. This innovative coffee brewing method was invented in 1929 and since then it has been one of the fastest methods to brew superior quality coffee every time.

In the French press pot, the coarsely ground coffee is soaked, steeped, and then strained in boiling water. This results in better diffusing the aromatic essential oils, antioxidants, and caffeine to discover the purest flavors.

Grind size : Coarse, like that of raw sugar Brew time : 4 minutes (don’t let the coffee sit in the press for long or it will get bitter) Ratio : 60-70 grams in 1 liter of water Flavor : pure and clean

What I like about the French Press

The rich flavor and luscious taste linger long after you have sipped on a cup of a French press. Besides the taste, the coffee-making experience is also out-of-the-world as it gives full control over the brew time, strength, and taste. With a French press, you can make 8 cups of great coffee in 5 minutes.

What I don’t like about the French Press

It’s not the preferred way to make coffee on busy mornings. You need to constantly monitor the process and be very careful about the water temperature and grind size. You just can’t let it brew and go for a shower. Cleaning up is not easy if you don’t have a garbage disposal because putting grounds in the sink may cause a clog on the pipe.

4. AeroPress

Aeropress

This is a relatively new and cool way to make coffee at home. Created by Alan Adler, the first AeroPress (See Review) was launched in 2005. It is made of plastic and constitutes three parts. The filter is placed inside the coffee basket in the lower section of the brew chamber.

When hot water is added to the coffee grounds, they are completely immersed in water. A plunger is pressed down to create a high level of pressure that results in extracting the intense flavor. The strength and flavor of the coffee are similar to that of espresso.

Grind size: fine to medium (Finer than salt) Brew time : 1-2 minutes Ratio : 17 grams of coffee grounds in 220 grams of water Flavor : sweet, espresso-style, full-bodied

What I like about AeroPress

The AeroPress is highly portable and it works great for camping outdoors and impressing your friends. Cleaning up is super easy as you just need to throw out the puck and rinse, that’s it! Due to the high intensity of pressure, it may sometimes take less than 2 minutes to brew.

Not to forget that the resulting brew is super delicious!

What I don’t like about AeroPress

You will need to buy separate filters for the AeroPress, however, this is not much of a trouble, thanks to the Internet. It can brew only one cup at a time, so not an ideal solution if you want to enjoy a coffee binge on the weekends.

Read our AeroPress Review

5. Stovetop Moka Pot

stovetop moka pot

If you want to make authentic coffee as the Italians did some 80 years ago then a stove pot Moka is the way to go! Patented by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933, this style of coffee making uses steam pressure from hot water to pass through the lower section of the pot that contains coffee grounds.

Well-design steam pressure is capable of creating really good pressure and the coffee sits on the higher chamber. Some of the popular brands are Pedrini, Bialetti, and Kabalo.

Grind size : Fine  Ratio : 17-22 grams of coffee in 220 grams of water Brewing Time : 5 minutes Flavor : strong, espresso-style coffee,

What I like about Stovetop Moka Pot

This style of brewing can produce single or double shots of Java. Moka pot requires less maintenance as it is easy to clean and highly portable too. You can take it with you while camping or traveling. If you want one more reason to buy a Stovetop Moka Pot , it’s the experience for sure!

What I don’t like about Stovetop Moka Pot

This is a complex process that you may enjoy in the weekends or at leisure but is certainly not the thing for busy weekdays.

Siphon - different ways to make coffee

This is a vacuum-based, fun way to make coffee and home and make your guests go ow’. Invented in Germany around the 1840s, and it works on the mechanism of forcing very hot water inside the chamber containing coffee grounds.

The coffee grounds go in the upper vessel and the pressure created by hot water immerses the grounds completely. When the pressure is removed, the gravity does its job and pushes the brew through the filter into the cup.

Grind size : Medium to Medium fine (feel a little smooth when you rub with the finger) Ratio : 20-25 grams in 12 ounces of water Brewing time : 6 minutes Flavor : delicate and subtle

What I like about the Siphon

If you are looking for a dramatic way to make great coffee that will have people talking, this is for you. This is a fun method that gives you full control over the heating and steeping time. The full immersion of coffee grounds in hot water lets you enjoy a full spectrum of flavors.

What I don’t like about the Siphon

The equipment is delicate and not easy to store. The cleanup process is fussy and takes a lot of time. You will need to stick around for at least 10 minutes to get that perfect brew.

Furthermore, it requires a butane burner, candle, and filters which add up to the expense.

7. Espresso

Espresso pull - different ways to make coffee

For some, there’s coffee and then there’s espresso, the ultimate experience that takes coffee making to a different level altogether. While making a latte at home may take a hell of a lot of time with freshly ground beans, tamping the grounds, pulling the shots, frothing the milk , and assembling the final drink, it’s worth it!

If you wish to try your hand at espresso, you may choose from the four different types of espresso makers available in the market – pump-driven, piston-driven, steam-driven, and air-pump-driven.

Grind size : Fine

Ratio : 18 grams in 36 grams of water Brewing time : 25 to 35 seconds Flavor : rich and delicious

What I like about Espresso

It delivers the best quality of coffee you have ever tasted. Once you taste an espresso , there’s no looking back. The espresso maker can cater to high volumes and have as many as four heads. It brews coffee much faster than the traditional methods.

What I don’t like about Espresso

It takes a lot of preparation time that includes grinding the beans and tamping the bed of coffee grounds. To brew an espresso, the barista needs good training so it’s not something you can do casually at home. You need to be a pro!

8. Single Serve Coffee Maker

This is perhaps the most common of the different ways to make coffee at home. Keurig stands tall as the most preferred brand that offers single-cup brewing machines for homes and offices. The single-serve coffee maker is the go-to way for people who don’t have a lot of time.

You just need to fill up the tank with water and put coffee grounds in the pod. When you turn on the coffee machine, a pump sucks in water, heats it to the right temperature , and forces it through the ground coffee to release the flavor.

Grind size : Fine to Medium Ratio : 1:16 Brewing time : Less than 2 minutes Flavor : rich and delicious

What I like about Single Serve Coffee

This is a no-brainer because the speed and convenience with which you can make coffee with a single server are invincible. The reusable K-cup filters allow you to try a variety of coffee flavors. With so many brands and models available, it is possible to find an equipment that suits your needs, fits in your kitchen and falls within your budget.

What I don’t like about Single Serve Coffee

The single K-Cup reusable filters are expensive and they don’t hold enough coffee grounds to offer the right water to grounds ratio. Unlike the traditional methods, the water does not get hot enough resulting in under extraction. The coffee may taste mild with delicate flavors.

Bonus: Smart coffee makers

The smart coffee makers are the advanced versions of single-serve brewers and they are app-controlled. You just need to add water and beans to the brewer the night before and your morning cup of Java will be ready when you order it from the bed.

Most of the drip coffee makers can be pre-set to start brewing at a specific time, but smart coffee makers do not need a pre-set brew time. You are free to control it with your app anytime! Some smart coffee makers are also compatible with Alexa to make it easier to brew coffee from any room.

Different Ways to Make Coffee: 7 Top Tips

  • Always buy fresh, whole coffee beans and grind them at home to get the full flavor. If you are buying pre-ground coffee, you are restricting your experience because coffee reaches its peak flavor only days after it is roasted. The flavors start depleting thereafter.
  • The flavor of your coffee is highly influenced by when you grind beans so make sure you do it just before brewing to get full flavors. According to experts, coffee starts losing its flavor as soon as you finish grinding. To get best results, grind on-spot before brewing!
  • To keep your coffee beans fresh for a longer time, make sure you store it properly in a vacuum-sealed container with just one valve or opening. Most coffee connoisseurs prefer the mason jars.
  • To extract full flavor, you must brew at the right temperature. Unfortunately, most of the automatic drip machines don’t achieve the optimal brewing temperature which is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. To avoid this, you may consider pre-boiling water before adding it to the tank.
  • To make coffee correctly, make sure you measure the grounds by weight instead of considering the volume. The key to consistently making the perfect cup of coffee every time is to do away with variables and always use the same amount using a digital scale. The ideal ratio to make a strong cup of Joe is 1:20.
  • Pre-infusing coffee grounds is a critical step skipped by most automatic coffee makers and this inhibits the full extraction. The manual pour over coffee cones usually come with a pre-infusion that helps the grounds release any leftover carbon dioxide gas to make a strong brew.
  • Finally, another important and most overlooked aspect of coffee making is the quality of water used. This can heavily impact the flavor of the coffee, resulting in an under-extracted brew. Using hard water will also build up deposits that are hard to clean.

Also, avoid using distilled or filtered water as they force water to leach minerals out of the machine’s metal parts. Your best bet would be bottled water, which is not heavily filtered or too infused with minerals.

Different Ways To Make Coffee: The Final Word

While there are high standards set for the purely extracted perfect cup of Joe, the beauty lies in the fact that you can experiment with different ways to make coffee at home to adapt to your style and preferences.

With so many different coffee-making equipment and accessories available, it is up to you how you wish to brew coffee at home. Before buying any equipment, make sure you compare the brands and read the customer reviews online .

I personally prefer espresso on relaxed weekends or when I wish to show off my coffee-making skills to guests. On other days, I am better off with the smart coffee maker that lets me brew a morning cuppa, afternoon fix, or late-night jitter juice without raising a finger!

Once done, it should clear the cache for Crunchyroll on your browser. Similarly, you can clear the cache for Crunchyroll on Chrome as well.

5. Check Site Settings

Websites like Crunchyroll sometimes use browser features, like pop-ups, to open the selected content in other browser windows. However, most browsers have this disabled by default or allow you to disable it manually.

If it is indeed disabled or if you have refused site permissions, it can cause certain site features not to work properly. Thus, showing a black screen. To fix this, open the site settings for Crunchyroll and enable any such permission on the relevant browser. Follow the below steps to do it.

Step 1: Open Crunchyroll on Firefox and click on the shield icon.

Step 2: Then, click on Protection settings.

Enable site settings Firefox

Step 1: Open Crunchyroll on Chrome and click on the View site information icon.

Step 2: Here, click on Site settings. This should open the site settings for Crunchyroll in a separate tab.

Open Site settings Chrome

Step 3: Here, go through all the relevant drop-downs and change them to Allow.

Enable site settings Chrome

Step 1: Open Crunchyroll on Edge. Then, go to the address bar and click on the lock icon.

Step 2: Here, click on ‘Permissions for this site’.

Open site permissions Edge

Step 3: Scroll through the site permissions and click on the drop-down for the blocked ones. From the options, select Allow.

Enable site settings Edge

Repeat this until all the relevant site permissions, especially pop-ups, are enabled. Then, reload the page and check again. If Crunchyroll videos are still not loading, continue troubleshooting.

6. Disable Hardware Acceleration

While hardware acceleration is usually useful for speeding up your web browser, it can backfire sometimes. This can, in turn, end up causing other issues, like the Crunchyroll website showing a black screen on Firefox, Chrome, and even Edge. To fix this, you can disable hardware acceleration on your browser. Then, reload the page and check if the issue is resolved.

7. Try Using Incognito Mode

You can open an incognito window and use that to stream Crunchyroll. This will help disable browser extensions and other features, like cache, causing the site to show a black screen when playing a video. Cbssports.com and sportsline break down super bowl lviii.

49ers-chiefs-lombardi-g.jpg

Super Bowl Sunday is finally here! By the end of the day, an NFL champion will be crowned. Will the Kansas City Chiefs repeat as champions, or will the San Francisco 49ers claim their first NFL title since the 1994 season? We'll find out shortly when these two teams face off in Super Bowl LVIII, and we have you covered every step of the way.

As we've done throughout the year, we've collected all of the best picks and gambling content from CBSSports.com and SportsLine and put them in one place, so you can get picks against the spread from our CBS Sports experts as well as additional feature content for the game, including plays from top SportsLine experts and the SportsLine Projection Model, best bets from our staff, and more. Ready? Let's jump in.

All  NFL odds  via SportsLine consensus odds.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Time:  Sunday, 6:30 p.m. ET (CBS/Nickelodeon), stream on Paramount+ ( click here )  Open:  49ers -2, O/U 47

Micah Roberts' pick

SportsLine's Micah Roberts has worked in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry for 20-plus years, including a 13-year run as Station Casinos' book director. He is 19-12-2 over his last 33 NFL picks, for a profit of $558. He's also 22-5 on his last 27 ATS picks involving the 49ers, so you'll certainly want to see which way he is leaning for the Super Bowl. We can tell you he's leaning Under on the total, but to see his ATS pick you'll have to go to  SportsLine .

Tyler Sullivan's pick

"While the Niners are certainly a talented club, it just feels like more of the advantages lean in the Chiefs favor. They have the better defense, quarterback, and coach in my estimation. Kansas City is battle-tested winning back-to-back playoff games on the road, while the Niners have needed to dig themselves out of holes playing at home. On a neutral site and a stage that Kansas City is very familiar with over the past few seasons -- Allegiant Stadium, home of the AFC West rival Las Vegas Raiders -- it just seems like there will be more obstacles in the way of San Fran.

"I believe the key to this game will come down to whether or not the 49ers linebackers (particularly  Fred Warner ) can help defend against  Travis Kelce , who has been the lifeblood of the offense over the last two playoff wins. While San Francisco gave up the seventh fewest yards per reception and second fewest yards after the catch per reception to tight ends this year, Kelce has historically destroyed this defense. Mahomes is 20 of 24 for 255 yards and a touchdown when targeting Kelce in the three games he's played against the Niners in his career.

"I'm also actually kind of surprised that K.C. is an underdog in this head-to-head, but that plays into our hands as the underdog has covered the last three Super Bowls and 15 of the past 22. Mahomes is also 9-0-1 ATS in his career as an underdog away from Kansas City and is 3-0 straight-up in his career as an underdog in the playoffs. As for the coaching head-to-head, Andy Reid is 3-0 ATS and SU against Kyle Shanahan and all of those victories have been by double digits." -- CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan on why he likes the Chiefs to cover and win outright, 24-20 .

Jason La Canfora's pick

SportsLine expert Jason La Canfora has covered the league for more than two decades for CBS Sports, The Washington Post and the NFL Network, among other outlets. He comes into Super Bowl LVIII on a red-hot pace, owning a 52-27 (+2202) on his last 79 NFL picks. We can tell you he's leaning Over the total, but to see his spread pick you have to check out SportsLine .

John Breech's pick

"If Kyle Shanahan has nightmares every day this week, you can't really blame him and that's mostly because no one has worse luck in the Super Bowl than him. The 49ers coach has been to the Super Bowl twice and both trips have ended in absolute disaster.

  • Trip 1:  Shanahan's first trip came in 2016 with the  Falcons  and his week got off to a rough start when  he lost his backpack , which contained Atlanta's offensive game plan and $30,000 worth of Super Bowl tickets. Oh, and his team also blew a 28-3 lead in the game.
  • Trip 2:  Shanahan's second trip to the Super Bowl came four years ago and things were actually going well, but then his team blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Chiefs in a 31-20 loss. That blown lead is tied for the second-biggest blown lead in Super Bowl history behind only ... OK, you know what, I'm not even going to mention it again. I think you get the point.

"The only way Shanahan will be able to put those nightmares behind him is if the 49ers actually win and to do that, all he has to do is figure out a way to stop the best quarterback in the NFL: Patrick Mahomes.

"And then even if he slows down Mahomes, he still has to draw up an offensive game plan that will allow his team to move the ball on the Chiefs defense, which has been one of the best in the NFL this year. Not only did the Chiefs rack up the second-most sacks in the league in 2023 (57), but it also gave up the fourth-fewest passing yards.

"If the 49ers are going to win, they're likely going to need a huge game from  Christian McCaffrey . If the Chiefs defense has one weakness, it's the ability to stop the run. Including the playoffs, the Chiefs went 7-6 this season in games where they surrendered 110 yards or more on the ground. When they held their opponent to under 110 yards, they went 7-0. The Chiefs are almost always going to shut down the pass and if they also shut down the run, they're probably going to win.

"The Chiefs defense will go into this game knowing it needs to do two things: Stop McCaffrey and force  Brock Purdy  to make mistakes.

"Purdy had five games this year where he was sacked multiple times while also throwing at least one interception and the 49ers went 2-3 in those games, with all three losses coming to AFC teams ( Browns ,  Ravens ,  Bengals ). If the Chiefs can get pressure on Purdy and force him to make mistakes, they should be able to win.

"The problem for the Chiefs is that if you're going to put pressure on Purdy, you can't do it by blitzing him or he'll destroy you.

"If the Chiefs can get pressure without blitzing or if they can confuse Purdy with exotic blitzes, the defense might be able to slow him down. And if anyone can come up with a defense to slow down Purdy, it's Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulo, who is having one hell of a postseason.

"Despite going up against  Lamar Jackson , Josh Allen and  Tua Tagovailoa , the Chiefs have only surrendered 13.7 points per game this postseason, which  ranks as the fourth-best showing  in NFL playoff history. The 2000 Ravens are at the top of the list for fewest points allowed per game in the playoffs, but they had the luxury of facing quarterbacks like Gus Frerotte and Kerry Collins.

"The Chiefs defense has been great this postseason because every game plan Spagnulo has come up with has been a work of art. Imagine if Da Vinci had three Mona Lisas, that's what Spagnulo has done so far in the playoffs. Spagnulo confused Lamar Jackson in the AFC title game with 20 DIFFERENT blitzes, including 12 that came from defensive backs, and now, he gets to go up against a second-year QB in Purdy. As everyone knows, second-year quarterbacks are notoriously easy to confuse.

"If Shanahan comes up with a game plan that can move the ball on the Chiefs defense, then the 49ers will certainly be in a good spot, but to win the game, they'll still have to figure out a way to stop Mahomes, which, well, good luck with that. The 49ers defense forgot to show up for the first half of both playoff games this year and if that happens again, Mahomes might have this game out of reach by halftime.

"The other thing about the 49ers defense is that they haven't been able to stop the run in the playoffs. The 49ers only surrendered more than 130 yards rushing four times this year and two of those came in the postseason. If the Chiefs get their rushing attack going, it's hard to imagine them losing. Including the playoffs, the Chiefs are 15-2 over the past two seasons in any game where they rush for at least 100 yards and Mahomes throws for at least 200 yards and I feel like we're going to see both of those numbers get hit.

"This Super Bowl is giving me a serious case of deja vu:

  • We're getting a rematch from four years ago
  • We have the same referee as four years ago (Bill Vinovich)
  • We have the same two head coaches, marking just the fourth time in NFL history that we've had a coaching rematch in the Super Bowl (The coach that lost the first game has never won the second game)
  • And Brock Purdy has a career record of 21-5, which is the same exact career record that  Jimmy Garoppolo  had in 26 starts with the 49ers going into Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs

"Since history always tends to repeat itself, I've decided I can't pick against history here. If the Chiefs win, though, let's just hope that history doesn't keep repeating itself, because the last time they beat the 49ers, we got a global pandemic one month later." -- CBS Sports' John Breech on why he has the Chiefs pulling out a 31-20 win over San Francisco .

Alex Selesnick's pick

SportsLine's props expert Alex Selesnick (aka PropStarz) specializes in NFL, MLB and NBA prop betting, where he implements a combination of research, statistical analysis and mathematical modeling. Currently, he is on a stunning 70-51 streak on his NFL props picks for SportsLine, for a profit of $764 for $100 bettors. For this Super Bowl, PropStarz is looking at Brock Purdy going under his 261.5 passing/rushing yards prop. He's also locked into several Super Bowl prop picks, including a wide receiver who also could have a rough night and fall short of his receiving total. To see that pick, head on over to SportsLine .

Pete Prisco's pick

"This Chiefs team hasn't been the gaudy-statistical offensive team we have come to expect from Mahomes, but he has found a way to work through major issues on offense this season, including poor tackle play and receivers who couldn't hold onto the football. Now he has his team on the precipice of history.

"The Chiefs would become the first back-to-back champion since the  New England Patriots  and Brady did it way back in 2003 and 2004.

"While Mahomes hasn't racked up the big numbers in the playoffs, he's been steady, capable and made the big plays when needed without making mistakes. Game manager? Hardly. But he hasn't thrown a pick in three postseason games and has been sacked just three times behind a leaky offensive line. That's playing big in the moment.

"That isn't to say Mahomes can't get hot and carry this team, even with the issues. We know he can. But I think the Chiefs will start out running the football in this game with  Isiah Pacheco  against a 49ers defense that has given up 5.6 per rush in the playoffs. The 49ers have been gashed trying to defend the run, getting pushed around by both the Green Pay Packers and Detroit Lions. Andy Reid is smart enough to know that's where he has to attack.

"On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs have their best defense during the Mahomes era. Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is one of the best ever in the postseason, but he faces a stiff challenge against the 49ers' high-scoring offense. Spagnuolo loves to use a lot of nickel and dime looks, but you can bet the 49ers will attack that with  Christian McCaffrey  if he does. The Chiefs, like the 49ers, are vulnerable to the run and would be even more so if they don't play more base defense.

"Then there's 49ers quarterback  Brock Purdy , playing in his first Super Bowl. This is a game that could be his true proving moment for any doubters still left. He has been really good this season, putting his name in the MVP talk for a bit. In the 49ers two postseason victories, he has come up big with late-game drives. That's how quarterbacks are defined, even if he did have some struggles at times in those games.

"Purdy has been outstanding against the blitz this year -- No. 1 in the league -- so Spagnuolo will have to be creative with how he uses it. The Chiefs secondary is the strength of the defense, and its disguises and late rotations could be big in getting Purdy to hesitate a tick.

"Early on, I see two teams running the football against weak rush defenses. The game will be close late. But in the end, it will be Mahomes time.

"I can see it now: 49ers lead by three at 20-17, Mahomes with the ball at his own 25 with 2:20 left in the game and two timeouts. From there, it's Mahomes pulling out another magical moment, a surgical carving of the 49ers defense to get the Chiefs a game-winning touchdown, even though the field goal would tie it.

"That would give Mahomes three Super Bowl victories in six years as a starter, with one loss in the big game. He could easily have played in two others, blowing a 21-3 lead to the  Bengals  in a playoff loss and seeing an offsides penalty negate an interception that would have beaten the Patriots in an AFC championship game.

"The man is on a mission. That mission is to take down Brady as the greatest quarterback of all time. But let's make it bigger than that. He could be on his way to being the next Michael Jordan, leaving stars in his path without rings as he piles them up as the greatest to do it.

"High praise for sure, but who are we to doubt Patrick Mahomes? I certainly won't." -- CBS Sports Senior NFL analyst Pete Prisco on why he has the Chiefs pulling out a 24-20 win over the 49ers .

SportsLine senior analyst Larry Hartstein has his finger on the pulse on the Chiefs. He is 32-21 (+855) on his last 53 against the spread picks in games involving Kansas City. With that in mind, you'll certainly want to see how he is betting on this Super Bowl, especially after he's uncovered a key X factor that has him backing one side of the spread. To see that selection, go over to SportsLine .

Jeff Kerr's pick

"I usually make a Super Bowl prediction based on which team has the advantage in the battle in the trenches. The Chiefs offensive line has allowed just 30 sacks in the 20 games they played this season, a sack percentage of 3.9% (both rank second in the NFL). That sack percentage has dipped to 1.9% in the postseason, and Kansas City didn't have  Joe Thuney  in the AFC title game win over the Ravens.

"The 49ers have a pressure rate of just 30.8% in the playoffs (13th amongst the 14 teams) with a sack rate of just 2.6%. The matchup favors Chiefs offensive line there.

"The 49ers offensive line has allowed a sack rate of 4.1% (fifth amongst the playoff teams) and allowed a pressure rate of 44.2% (13th amongst the 14 playoff teams). In the regular season and playoffs combined, the 49ers allowed a 40.8% pressure rate (27th in NFL), but just 6.2% sack rate (ninth in NFL). The Chiefs led the NFL with an 8.6% sack rate and were 11th in pressure rate at 37.6%. In the playoffs, that pressure rate is just 30.4%.

"The Chiefs have the battle in the trenches at their advantage. They also have Reid and Mahomes, the best head coach-quarterback duo in the NFL. Hard to bet against either.

"The 49ers have the better roster, but the Chiefs have the championship pedigree and the edge in the trenches. Kansas City is poised for its third title in five years. Not a gambler, but the spread is -2 so they'll cover, too." -- CBS Sports' Jeff Kerr on why he has the Chiefs beating the 49ers, 30-24 .

Harvard psychologist: If you say 'yes' to any of these 9 questions, you're 'more emotionally secure than most'

thumbnail

Emotionally secure people feel empowered, confident and safe. They live authentically and stick to their own values and beliefs, even when doing so may rub others the wrong way.

As a  Harvard-trained psychologist , I've seen how emotional security can also help people have more gratitude for the good in their lives, as well as be more creative, spontaneous and free.

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you're more emotional secure than most people:

1. Can you listen to different perspectives you disagree with?

Emotionally secure people are able to hear other points of view without reacting to them in an aggressive way.

Instead of going to battle, there is a flexible, empathic and non-judgmental exploration of another person's reality — even during times of conflict and disagreement.

2. Can you set healthy boundaries?

Emotional security is associated with knowing yourself and setting limits based on your values.

Consequently, emotionally secure people can articulate how they want to be treated and set guidelines for how they will respond if those boundaries are not respected.

3. Can you admit when you're wrong?

All of us are wrong sometimes, but it can be very difficult to own up to it. Emotionally secure people can acknowledge when they've made a mistake, take responsibility, and apologize for their actions.

4. Do you know your core values and beliefs?

Are you able to communicate your perspective in a respectful way, even when others may strongly disagree?

Emotional security is associated with being authentic, knowing one's values and acting in a way that's consistent with them in all life situations.

5. Can you express negative emotions respectfully?

Being emotionally secure means communicating your feelings in a respectful way that focuses on your internal experience.

Often, this is reflected by using "I" statements, like "I feel" or "I think," instead of blaming others for your circumstances.

6. Can you take criticism from others?

Receiving constructive feedback without immediately rejecting it or lashing out is a key sign of emotional security.

It means you have a strong sense of self that takes into consideration other people's perspectives and opinions about your approach to things, without taking them personally.

7. Do you continually strive to change and grow?

The most emotionally secure people have an appreciation for the journey of life and the process of evolving over time.

They are not afraid to embrace change. They find joy and satisfaction in the idea of learning and becoming the best version of themselves.

8. Can you stop yourself from reacting impulsively?

Emotionally secure people tend to be skilled at deliberately choosing their responses to difficult situations.

In this way, they aren't usually reactive or impulsive in their relationships and can articulate themselves clearly, even when they are angry or upset.

9. Do you trust that you'll be okay, no matter what challenges come your way?

Emotionally secure people know that life can be difficult, and they have a general acceptance that they will deal with hardship as it comes.

They also have a deep sense of gratitude for what is important to them, which helps them through the rough patches.

Being emotionally secure not only boosts our mental health, but it gives us the confidence to try new things and express ourselves freely without a fear of rejection. The more secure we feel in our own skin, the more freedom we have to enjoy our lives while building meaningful, authentic relationships.

Google’s Gemini is now in everything. Here’s how you can try it out.

Gmail, Docs, and more will now come with Gemini baked in. But Europeans will have to wait before they can download the app.

  • Will Douglas Heaven archive page

In the biggest mass-market AI launch yet, Google is rolling out Gemini , its family of large language models, across almost all its products, from Android to the iOS Google app to Gmail to Docs and more. You can also now get your hands on Gemini Ultra, the most powerful version of the model, for the first time.

With this launch, Google is sunsetting Bard , the company's answer to ChatGPT. Bard, which has been powered by a version of Gemini since December, will now be known as Gemini too.

ChatGPT , released by Microsoft-backed OpenAI just 14 months ago, changed people’s expectations of what computers could do. Google, which has been racing to catch up ever since, unveiled its Gemini family of models in December. They are multimodal large language models that can interact with you via voice, image, and text. Google claimed that its own benchmarking showed that Gemini could outperform OpenAI's multimodal model, GPT-4, on a range of standard tests. But the margins were slim.

By baking Gemini into its ubiquitous products, Google is hoping to make up lost ground. “Every launch is big, but this one is the biggest yet,” Sissie Hsiao, Google vice president and general manager of Google Assistant and Bard (now Gemini), said in a press conference yesterday. “We think this is one of the most profound ways that we’re going to advance our company’s mission.”

But some will have to wait longer than others to play with Google’s new toys. The company has announced rollouts in the US and East Asia but said nothing about when the Android and iOS apps will come to the UK or the rest of Europe. This may be because the company is waiting for the EU’s new AI Act to be set in stone, says Dragoș Tudorache, a Romanian politician and member of the European Parliament, who was a key negotiator on the law.

“We’re working with local regulators to make sure that we’re abiding by local regime requirements before we can expand,” Hsiao said. “Rest assured, we are absolutely working on it and I hope we’ll be able to announce expansion very, very soon.”

How can you get it? Gemini Pro, Google’s middle-tier model that has been available via Bard since December, will continue to be available for free on the web at gemini.google.com (rather than bard.google.com). But now there is a mobile app as well.

If you have an Android device, you can either download the Gemini app or opt in to an upgrade in Google Assistant. This will let you call up Gemini in the same way that you use Google Assistant: by pressing the power button, swiping from the corner of the screen, or saying “Hey, Google!” iOS users can download the Google app, which will now include Gemini.

Gemini will pop up as an overlay on your screen, where you can ask it questions or give it instructions about whatever’s on your phone at the time, such as summarizing an article or generating a caption for a photo.

Finally, Google is launching a paid-for service called Gemini Advanced. This comes bundled in a subscription costing $19.99 a month that the company is calling the Google One Premium AI Plan. It combines the perks of the existing Google One Premium Plan, such as 2TB of extra storage, with access to Google's most powerful model, Gemini Ultra, for the first time. This will compete with OpenAI’s paid-for service, ChatGPT Plus, which buys you access to the more powerful GPT-4 (rather than the default GPT-3.5) for $20 a month.

At some point soon (Google didn't say exactly when) this subscription will also unlock Gemini across Google’s Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, and Slides, where it works as a smart assistant similar to the GPT-4-powered Copilot that Microsoft is trialing in Office 365.

When can you get it? The free Gemini app (powered by Gemini Pro) is available from today in English in the US. Starting next week, you’ll be able to access it across the Asia Pacific region in English and in Japanese and Korean. But there is no word on when the app will come to the UK, countries in the EU, or Switzerland.

Gemini Advanced (the paid-for service that gives access to Gemini Ultra) is available in English in more than 150 countries, including the UK and EU (but not France). Google says it is analyzing local requirements and fine-tuning Gemini for cultural nuance in different countries. But the company promises that more languages and regions are coming.

What can you do with it? Google says it has developed its Gemini products with the help of more than 100 testers and power users. At the press conference yesterday, Google execs outlined a handful of use cases, such as getting Gemini to help write a cover letter for a job application. “This can help you come across as more professional and increase your relevance to recruiters,” said Google’s vice president for product management, Kristina Behr.

Or you could take a picture of your flat tire and ask Gemini how to fix it. A more elaborate example involved Gemini managing a snack rota for the parents of kids on a soccer team. Gemini would come up with a schedule for who should bring snacks and when, help you email other parents, and then field their replies. In future versions, Gemini will be able to draw on data in your Google Drive that could help manage carpooling around game schedules, Behr said.

But we should expect people to come up with a lot more uses themselves. “I’m really excited to see how people around the world are going to push the envelope on this AI,” Hsaio said.

Is it safe? Google has been working hard to make sure its products are safe to use. But no amount of testing can anticipate all the ways that tech will get used and misused once it is released. In the last few months, Meta saw people use its image-making app to produce pictures of Mickey Mouse with guns and SpongeBob SquarePants flying a jet into two towers. Others used Microsoft’s image-making software to create fake pornographic images of Taylor Swift .

The AI Act aims to mitigate some—but not all—of these problems.
