A Speech To Inspire Our Teachers Out There

Recently, I was invited to deliver the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the under- and post-graduates at our graduation ceremony.

After googling what a vote of thanks was, I accepted the opportunity. (It’s pretty much a chance to say thanks to our families and the staff…unsurprisingly).

In the end, what I discovered is that usually the main focus is on students thanking their lecturers, tutors, families and friends for supporting them through their degree. All very important, yes.

I also needed to thank all of those bachelors, doctorate, masters, graduate certificate and diploma recipients for choosing to help shape the future and lead within our classrooms and schools.

Truth be told, I wanted to remind every single person there that teaching and education is awesome, incredible and life changing.

Incredible, awesome, rewarding. ( Yes, and tiring. Especially after a lunch time yard duty in a Prep Yard on a Friday afternoon ).

No matter what we may hear within the media. No matter what that friend of yours may say. No matter how many times we may hear people simplifying or misunderstanding our impact as a profession.

Until they have been there in that moment watching a student, colleague or a family member break out into that amazing “ Ahhhh-I’ve-Got-It-Now-Smile ”, they will never truly know how incredible teaching and education is.

Right now, it can feel like not enough people realise just how important teaching is for everyone . That they are still unaware that teaching really is the parent of all professions, skills and abilities.

It isn’t those who can’t do, teach. It is those who can do, should thank a teacher. That’s why we need all of you.

You are special. The very fact you chose to challenge yourself and extend your knowledge means there is something within you; wanting to unleash and empower the potential within those students, teachers, schools, systems and government out there.

Interestingly enough word educate , which originated from Latin, doesn’t simply mean “ to teach ”. It actually had two meanings, depending on the ending you chose to use. Educ are and educ ere .

Educare, meant to lead or draw something out, while educere, was used when speaking of moulding or training someone. Even from its early days, the role of educators has been to not only mould and shape the future, but to lead and draw out the potential within others.

The graduates of today, you are both kinds of educators.

Sculptors and leaders.

You are a special group.

But truth be told… I think it’s safe to say, we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for a certain person or group of people who helped us.

Take a moment right now, if they’re here scan for that face, catch their eye and give them that knowing smile of gratitude and thanks. If they’re not here, smile as you recall the words or looks of encouragement they sent your way.

Or the times they reminded you that maybe you just needed to suck it up and do that final reading and stop complaining. ( It wouldn’t be a degree without a little bit of whinging around 11pm at night during the working week ).

Whether it was through intensive weeks and weekends, online modules, or attending full-time or part-time, sacrifices have been made to get to this day today

. Our brilliant families and ACU staff – you’ve been our greatest supporters. While at times it may have felt like we were working so hard; missing out on other events, reading until words merged into one another and writing into the night, you all sacrificed your time and energy to help us get here.

Visualize yourself succeeding in delivering a great presentation; practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or positive self-talk; or use props during practice sessions such as water bottles or stress balls if needed to remain calm during the real thing!

What strategies can I use to reduce my anxiety when giving a speech?

1. Plan Ahead: Create an outline of your speech beforehand and practice it multiple times to become familiar with the content. Doing a trial run with the audience can also help you get used to speaking in front of people.

2. Visualize Success: Positive visualization is a great way to reduce anxiety before giving a speech. Imagine yourself confidently delivering the speech while feeling relaxed and composed.

3. Get Organized: Make sure you have all the materials necessary for your presentation, including notes, slides, etc., to reduce any additional stress that may come from not having what you need when you speak.

4. Take Deep Breaths: Before and during the speech, take a few deep breaths as this will help calm nerves and make sure your breathing is regulated throughout the duration of your presentation.

5. Speak Slowly: It is common to feel anxious while giving a speech and try to rush through it too quickly. Speaking slowly helps maintain composure while delivering your message effectively and clearly.

6. Pay Attention to Your Body: Your posture, stance, movements , facial expressions can all influence how confident you appear to your audience and how nervous you may be feeling inside. Check in with yourself frequently throughout the presentation and correct any tense body language or physical actions if needed.

7. Focus on the Audience: If you notice that your anxiety levels are growing as you present, shift your focus onto the audience instead of yourself as this will help refocus your attention away from negative thoughts that may arise from fear or insecurity.

8. Make Eye Contact: Establishing eye contact with your audience is a key confidence-builder for public speakers—it shows that you’re strong, engaged with them, and receptive to feedback or questions they might have regarding your speech topic .

9. Practice Positive Affirmations: Positive thoughts will boost your self-confidence as well as your mood which can help increase performance quality significantly during speeches or presentations in general—so don’t forget to tell yourself “you can do it!” several times throughout the day leading up to the event!

Public speaking tips for students aim to reduce anxiety that can interfere with giving presentations or speeches in class. These tips can also be helpful for those with social anxiety disorder (SAD)   who have difficulty speaking in front of a group or telling a story among friends.

Public Speaking Tips

If you have SAD and need to give a speech  in elementary school, high school, college, or university, it helps to be as prepared as possible . Beyond preparation, however, there are strategies that you can use to reduce anxiety and fight the urge to stay home with a fake illness.

Even great speakers practice their speeches beforehand. Practice out loud with a recording device or video camera and then watch yourself to see how you can improve. If you are feeling brave, practice in front of a friend or family member and ask for feedback.

• Talk about what you know : If possible, choose a topic for your speech or presentation that you know a lot about and love. Your passion for the topic will be felt by the audience, and you will feel less anxious knowing that you have a lot of experience to draw from when other students ask you questions.
• Concentrate on your message : When you focus on the task at hand, anxiety is less likely to get out of control. Concentrate on the main message of your speech or presentation and make it your goal to deliver that message to the other students in your class.
• Grab the audience's attention : Most of your fellow classmates will pay attention for at least the first 20 seconds; grab their attention during those early moments. Start with an interesting fact or a story that relates to your topic.
• Have one main message : Focus on one central theme and your classmates will learn more. Tie different parts of your talk to the main theme to support your overall message. Trying to cover too much ground can leave other students feeling overwhelmed.

Tell Stories

Stories catch the attention of other students and deliver a message in a more meaningful way than facts and figures. Whenever possible, use a story to illustrate a point in your talk.

Being prepared to speak in public can also be important if you have social anxiety disorder. Feeling confident and prepared to give your speech may help lessen your feelings of anxiety. Some of the things that you can do to prepare include:

• Visit the room : If you have access to the classroom where you will be speaking outside of class hours, take the time to visit in advance and get used to standing at the front of the room. Make arrangements for any audio-visual equipment and practice standing in the exact spot where you will deliver your speech.
• Rack up experience : Volunteer to speak in front of your class as often as possible. Be the first one to raise your hand when a question is asked. Your confidence will grow with every public speaking experience.
• Observe other speakers : Take the time to watch other speakers who are good at what they do. Practice imitating their style and confidence.
• Organize your talk : Every speech should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Structure your talk so that the other students know what to expect.

Manage Your Anxiety

Taking steps to deal with your feelings of anxiety can also make public speaking easier. Some of the things that you can do:

• Tell someone about your anxiety : If you are speaking in front of a high school or college class, meet with your teacher or professor and describe your public speaking fears . If you're in elementary or high school, share your fears with your parents, a teacher, or a guidance counselor. Sometimes sharing how you feel can make it easier to overcome stage fright.
• Visualize confidence : Visualize yourself confidently delivering your speech. Imagine feeling free of anxiety and engaging the students in your class. Although this may seem like a stretch for you now, visualization is a powerful tool for changing the way that you feel. Elite athletes use this strategy to improve performance in competitions.
• Find a friendly face : If you are feeling anxious, find one of your friends in class (or someone who seems friendly) and imagine that you are speaking only to that person.

Maintain Perspective

Remember that other students are on your side. Think about a time when you have been an audience member and the student delivering the speech or presentation was noticeably nervous. Did you think less of that student? More likely, you felt sympathetic and wanted to make that person more comfortable by smiling or nodding.

Remember—other students generally want you to succeed and feel comfortable. If for some reason the audience is not on your side or you experience bullying or social exclusion, be sure to discuss this with a parent, teacher, or guidance counselor.

Be Confident

Sometimes just knowing what makes a good speech can help you feel more confident. Focus on some of the following elements and practice them before you have to speak in public.

• Develop your own style : In addition to imitating good speakers, work on developing your own personal style as a public speaker. Integrate your own personality into your speaking style and you will feel more comfortable in front of the class. Telling personal stories that tie into your theme are a great way to let other students get to know you better.
• Avoid filler words : Words such as "basically", "well", and "um" don't add anything to your speech. Practice being silent when you feel the urge to use one of these words.
• Vary your tone, volume, and speed : Interesting speakers vary the pitch (high versus low), volume (loud versus soft), and speed (fast versus slow) of their words. Doing so keeps your classmates interested and engaged in what you say.
• Make the audience laugh : Laughter is a great way to relax both you and the other students in your class, and telling jokes can be a great icebreaker at the beginning of a speech. Practice the timing and delivery of your jokes beforehand and ask a friend for feedback. Be sure that they are appropriate for your class before you begin.
• Smile : If all else fails, smile. Your fellow classmates will perceive you like a warm speaker and be more receptive to what you have to say.

Don't Apologize

If you make a mistake, don't offer apologies. Chances are that your classmates didn't notice anyway. Unless you need to correct a fact or figure, there is no point dwelling on errors that probably only you noticed.

If you make a mistake because your hands or shaking, or something similar, try to make light of the situation by saying something like, "I wasn't this nervous when I woke up this morning!" This can help to break the tension of the moment.

It's natural to feel frightened the first time you have to speak in front of your class. However, if you fear continues, interferes with your daily life and keeps you awake at night, it may be helpful to see someone about your anxiety.

While some people think it’s easy, the role of a teacher is very challenging and equally important. It is their responsibility to impart the correct knowledge and in the right manner. They have to teach methodically for which they prepare their lessons beforehand. Thus, they are able to motivate their students through the use of accurate techniques.

A good teacher gives homework to their students also checks it regularly for a better practice. Further, they plan meticulously for a better teaching pattern. At the beginning of the year, they plan the whole syllabus out for a smooth teaching experience.

In addition to teaching, a teacher is also a good organizer. They have to organize various activities that take place in school throughout the year. Further, they have to take care of other little yet important things, like the seating arrangement, classroom activities and more.

Moreover, they also supervise a lot of tasks and activities in school. For instance, attendance, homework, behaviour is also supervised by teachers. They are responsible for maintaining the discipline and decorum of the students.

Most importantly, they guide the students every step of the way. They have to make sure they do not favour a specific student and give equal attention to all. In fact, teachers have to decide how they divide the attention towards students who need it more than others.

Thus, it is fair to say that our teachers are the ones who make this world a better place. They make this world a better place by enhancing student’s lives. Moreover, teachers are the ones who play the role of so many people in a child’s life. They are a mentor, a parent, a friend, and more which makes all the difference in one’s life.

6 Public Speaking Tips for Teachers

Whether you’re an experienced classroom speaker or find larger audiences daunting, improving public speaking skills is essential for any teacher.

With these 6 tips, you’ll be equipped to deliver any speech with confidence and impact.

1. Articulate clearly and confidently

Ensuring that your students understand the topic you are talking about is vital to making public speaking effective . Keeping the language used simple will make it easier for learners to understand the content.

Articulation transforms complex information into a clear and simple message, making it easy to process.

Unclear speech can impact a student’s understanding and reduce their engagement in the lesson. Difficulty in understanding the information being taught may lead to the student leaving the class without having learned anything or not understanding the correct context.  

Shadowing an experienced public speaker will demonstrate what good public speaking should look like. Studying a stranger’s public speech will aid your interpretation of how to capture the audience’s attention, even if the audience is new.

You could also imitate or shadow someone you already look up to and observe what techniques they use to capture your own attention.

Listening to examples of effective sentence lengths provides good articulation. Having only one long sentence will lose learners’ attention, making it harder for them to stay focused. Instead, try breaking down the sentences into smaller ones.

Listening to monotone speakers can also be very exhausting and not very engaging at all that is why voice projection, sound, pace, and tone are so important when making a public speech in order to engage the listener.

2. Use powerful body language

Messages and communication can be transmitted through body language . Without even realizing it, our body conveys our emotions which can be read by other individuals; for example, if we are feeling nervous or anxious this can be identified by our body language, and the recipient can infer how you are feeling based on the body language being presented.

The first step to improving body language is to feel confident. Confidence is a trait that some more than others attain easier, but in essence, it means believing in yourself and your abilities.

When you feel confident, the public can see this in the way that your body is standing or is presented. Feel confident in your speech within the lesson you are teaching and most importantly feel confident that what you are teaching will be useful and effective for your students becomes they will feel eased and trust that you know the material you are presenting.

But how can we speak with confidence in public?

You can present yourself as a confident public speaker by preparing and organizing your teaching material before the presentation, whether that be ensuring you print off any material that is necessary for advance, creating cue cards to help you navigate your presentation or even arriving early for your speech.

Through various body language techniques, you can present yourself to your audience as a confident public speaker to control the space around you by using gestures to emphasize points, moving around slowly, and even using facial expressions to guide the sentiment and expression of your speech.

Showing negative facial expressions will impact the way you think. If the lesson is not going the way you had planned and you frown about it, your brain will receive a signal that the task is too difficult which will in turn cause an increase in stress level and will most likely make you slip up.

Additionally, maintaining eye contact with your students is a great way to connect and communicate with them about how they feel on the subject. Maintaining eye contact gives the invitation to turn to talk into a conversation and allows a teacher-student bond to be formed which will benefit both parties.

Although eye contact is important, thinking and maintaining eye contact at the same time has been evidently difficult to do. Our gut reaction when gathering our thoughts is to look away and then reconnect eye contact when thoughts have been collected. Instead of this, try to take a pause , think about the answer then when you are ready, answer the question.

Try focusing on taking a moment to breathe, smile and keep going.

3. Ehm… Eliminate filler words

Filler words do not add value, if anything, they can reduce fluidity. Commonly used words “like,” “well,” “so,” and “okay” are included in the filler words category. Other short examples include “um,” “er,” and “ah” which we use without realizing. Furthermore, phrases like “you know,” or “do you know what I mean?” count as filler words even though they do grammatically make sense. 

In addition to body language showing how we feel, filler words can express anxiety that can be transmitted to students. These expressions, words, and phrases are used to create a pause in a speech to allow thought into what to say next. However, if used too many times, it can be misinterpreted and show that the speaker is nervous or anxious. 

In some cases, however, filler words are used intentionally to fill gaps between thoughts or as a pause to rejuvenate the audience’s attention . Likewise, it is used to build emphasis on the next part of the presentation. 

The temptation to use filler words is normal, although overusing them will create disfluency and the class will find it difficult to stay focused. Speech disfluencies will disengage students and distract them from their learning.

Eliminating filler words and simply replacing them with silence has a powerful effect . Silence is not necessarily a bad thing, in fact, small pauses of silence help students reflect on what you have said.

It produces a dramatic effect that allows the students to resonate and absorb any new information that they have learned. Silences do not have to be filled because they can have the powerful effect of producing moments of clarity or understanding .

4. Practice  makes perfect

Practice makes perfect, right?

Preparing for public speaking is crucial when teaching. It grants room for improvement and secures that the lessons are provided in the right amount of detail; not too much to stray away from the topic and not too little where there is a gap in the learner’s understanding . 

In terms of public speaking, practice is actively demonstrating a specific way of life. This is done by repeatedly doing the same action until you understand the task at hand completely. 

The process of practicing will be beneficial as a teacher due to you familiarizing yourself with the content, words, and phrases from the presentation, allowing the speech to run smoothly. 

Allow your friends to help you practice public speaking. Invite them out to have a coffee or in a quiet setting and have a casual conversation, applying the skills needed in public speech.

You could also ask them to listen to your lesson where they can ask you to challenge questions and help you practice how to respond. They can also provide feedback on what you are doing well and what you could do to improve. 

When you are alone, you could record yourself, watch it back, and give yourself feedback on what went well and what you need to improve on. Make sure the audio has good quality as you want to be able to hear how you would sound to other people.

When listening to yourself back, think about whether you sound natural or if it sounds too rehearsed. Think about the tone and rhythm of your voice . Is it too slow or too fast? Remember it is okay to get it wrong on the first try. Keep practicing and you will improve. 

5. Stay on topic , engage your audience

Speaking in front of a group can be scary which is why preparing is important. Staying on topic will endorse the students’ attention to be absorbed. Going in the wrong direction will make the information chaotic which will create confusion, leading to the learners not being interested.

A great way to stay on topic (which links to practice) is to write an outline of what you would like to discuss. Having knowledge on the topic will verbalize expertise and will make the topic easier to talk about. Then address the main points, following a further expansion of those points.  

In addition, acknowledging the purpose of the lecture constructs an opportunity to be creative in the approach. How can you teach while making it interesting to your students? Understand whether you are informing your class or if you are creating a debate where you must persuade the other viewpoint. 

Focus on presenting without any distractions. Turn off your TV and put your phone on Do Not Disturb. These factors will interfere with your thought process and unintentionally steer you in the wrong direction. Contrary to this, relax so you’re not too focused on being uncomfortable. It may also help your thought process if you are relaxed. 

6. Ask questions, encourage interaction

Asking questions is an important part of learning. It demonstrates where the learner’s progress is and it enlarges what they already know. In addition, it takes the pressure off speaking to a group of people. 

It develops a two-way conversation making the environment more relaxed . Asking for questions gives the students the chance to clarify any gaps in their learning. Also, it testifies how well they were paying attention. Asking questions during the lesson additionally shows if a student was paying attention or not. It gives an idea of the progress status. 

The quality of questions will differ depending on the class. Younger students will ask simpler questions compared to an adult class. The questions and the amount you ask will also be dependent on what audience you are teaching. This will have to be taken into consideration when planning presentations.

When asking questions, let the class know when there will be an opportunity to do so. This could be as you go along pausing occasionally to answer questions or at the very end of the presentation. 

Answering questions can be nerve-racking and could lead to an unsuitable response, whether it be over-sharing or something completely unnecessary. To avoid this from happening follow these steps: 

• Listen to the question before answering. Questions do not need to be answered immediately due to a change in direction of the question. Give yourself a few seconds before answering;
• Understand what the question is about. If you do not have 100% clarity on the question, do not panic. You can ask the student to expand on the question to clarify what they mean before answering;
• Allow follow-up questions 1-1 when the class is doing a task. This will allow the students that are shyer to ask you a question. It will also just be a 1-1 conversation which relieves the pressure of answering in front of the whole group. 

As we have demonstrated, public speaking is an important life skill but it is extremely useful for us teachers, who conducted lessons daily and want to engage our learners in the classroom.

Using these various tips and tricks will allow us to improve our public speaking and communication skills which will facilitate the formation of connections with students, and motivate positive change within our classrooms.

Although it may be nerve-wracking standing up in front of a class full of students if we articulate, use our body language effectively, reduce our filler words, stay on topic, ask questions, and most importantly practice, we will be one step closer to concretizing this useful life skill and creating an engaging educational sphere around us .

No good teacher looks for their own success and endeavour; they always have their students’ present and future in mind. When one chooses to be a teacher, it is understood that a number of qualities are embodied in that individual.

A teacher is looked upon as a guide, a mentor, a friend and a selfless abode of love and care. No matter how young or old a teacher is, they consider their students as their own children. The influence of a teacher extends beyond the classroom. The best teachers tell their students where to look but don’t tell them what to see, according to Alexandra K Trenfor. Teachers let their light shine bright even on the darkest roads so that the little ones do not lose track of their destination. You are everything a teacher should be. To the world, you may be just another teacher, but to us, you are our hero. We respect you for what you have been doing for us all through these years. We know we are not the best students, but you are the best teacher we could ever ask for. Thank you for accepting us for who we are and for loving us as much.

Teachers play a pivotal role in the life of each and every student. A teacher need not be perfect, but a teacher ought to be knowledgeable so as to provide the students with the right information and considerate so as to be able to try and understand every little child. Teachers are often a source of inspiration. There are children who follow the footsteps of their teachers. A good teacher is like a treasure that has to be cherished and valued.

Joyce Meyer said, “Teachers can change lives with just the right mix of chalk and challenges”. It is true that as teachers, they always chalk out the right direction and overcome the challenges on the way. Teachers can do more than just guide. They pave the way and let the children choose their own paths to become the best version of themselves in the future.

Refusing to rest honorably - a teacher's farewell address

The retirement speech sample below was written to show you the end result of using the step by step guidelines I put together on 'how to write a retirement speech' and, to find out just how long it took to follow my own advice!

Although my farewell address is fictional it is based on experience. In a former life, before write-out-loud.com, I was a high school teacher for many years.

The background and setting for this speech 

To give you a deeper understanding, here's the context and a little about a speaker.

The setting is a school assembly hall. It is the end of term. The staff and students are looking forward to the holidays and a rest.

The speaker is Jane Smith. She has taught in this challenging low socio-economic school for the last 25 years.

Mr Harris, the school principal, has given her a warm introduction and returned to his seat. The focus and the stage is now hers alone.

Have I really been here 25 years? That sounds like a long time ... about the same length as a double spell of English grammar on a Friday afternoon when the sun is shining. On and on, and on.

Fortunately for you I don't plan to.

I remember coming here with my brand new teacher kit. I was full of ideas, things to do to make a difference. I thought I was the teacher and you, the students were my pupils. How wrong I was.

It took a while to understand. I was a reluctant learner. My head was so full of how things 'should be', there was very little room for how things 'were'. The gap in those early days between what I thought I needed to teach and what the students actually needed to learn was wide. There were times when bridging it was difficult: even times when it seemed impossible and I wanted to give up.

Mr Harris has been kind in saying I gave a gift of myself; my energy, enthusiasm, honesty, respect and love, to you. But I want to turn that around and give it back, for this is precisely what I feel you have given me.

I have been privileged to have had in my classroom many, many fine young people. 25 years ago some of them began to teach me how to teach.

They helped me build the first bridges. From them I learned true teaching is a special partnership. It only works when the teacher can see through the outer image, into the heart, and can understand and respect what they see. The student's role is to allow themselves to be seen, not just for who they are, or have been, but also for who they could be.

Over the years fashion has had skirts short, long, and short again. Underwear boldly became over wear for a time. Hair has come, gone, been big, cropped, technicolored, bleached, curled, straightened, extended and dreadlocked.

Despite the altering of outward appearance there has always been and always will be a constant. That is the inner need to strive for what is true and right.

I look back with gratitude. I entered a profession dedicated to assisting young people achieve their potential, to revealing or finding their best selves. As I leave it, I am taking many of you with me. You will live on in my memories. I'll always remember the things we achieved together: the many successful plays we put on, the speeches you gave, the debates and end of year concerts.

I've been asked what I'm going to do now. I'm going to do a lot of things and very few of them conform to the notion of retirement as a time of waiting for the inevitable end. Helen Hayes, put it this way: 'People who refuse to rest honorably on their laurels when they reach “retirement” age seem very admirable to me.'

I am going to travel to places I've always wanted to go to and haven't been. I am going to read books that have been waiting on my 'must read' list for years. I will garden, learn new skills, play with my grandchildren, visit art galleries, enjoy being around friends... In short, I plan to LIVE.

Thank you to my colleagues for their support, friendship and for being exemplars of what it is to serve faithfully with humility. I will always remember our shared laughter, our joys, as well as our struggles. Thank-you for the never-ending supply of black coffee in the staff-room to keep me awake and alert. Thank-you too, for the notes of appreciation, words of encouragement, sharing of resources, and time but mostly for your sincerity and trust.

And lastly, I leave you with this thought. There is only ever one of each us: one Jane Smith or one Mr Harris. We are unique. We are neither better nor less than anybody else but rather the best or least of ourselves.

I am still working on finding the best of me. It is an exciting on-going journey. Thank-you for being my traveling companions along a large and important part of my way. I am forever grateful for your stimulating company and the enormous collection of shared experiences indelibly printed on my mind.

Very well Good Morning to all of you present here today, especially the teachers. As we all know that today is Teachers Day and I am requested by some of the friends of mine to give a speech on teachers.

From kindergarten to graduation, every step that we took was accompanied by a teacher whose sole interest was in our own growth and welfare. I think teaching is one of those rare professions, which someone chooses out of passion, rather than necessity.

There are so many teachers, a few of them I personally know, who could have easily chosen a lucrative profession; nevertheless, they chose to go with their inner voice. That is, they chose to enlighten the minds and transform lives. Could there be a social work more elegant than transforming noisy, stubborn and rambunctious kids into disciplined, concerned and progressive adults.

While most of us strive for materialistic accomplishments – decent package, house, car etc; a teacher wishes for something more sensible, that is, to transform his/her students into productive and sensible citizens.

There is nothing by which the society or the nation could ever repay the services of a teacher. S/he is the very foundation of a society.

Having said that, I would like to request you all to celebrate the day with your beloved, respected teachers, with as much fun and joy as you can. It is a day when you make them happy and cheer them up for the noble task they have chosen.

Respected Principal, Respected teachers and my dear fellow Students,

It feels great to welcome you all to this auspicious occasion; since we have gathered here to celebrate one of the most admirable occasions i.e. Teacher’s Day, it’s an opportunity for me to share few words about teachers, their role in schools and colleges and their influence on the students.

Teachers are the backbone of our society because they majorly contribute in shaping the future of a nation, i.e. students and guide them in becoming an ideal citizen of the country. Teacher’s job is full of responsibility and challenges because not every student is same and thus the teacher has to be dynamic and adopt different teaching patterns for different students. Teaching is a social practice and more than knowledge, a teacher must be a good human being who can very well shoulder the responsibility of his/her job and understand the sensitivity of the situation where students from different backgrounds have come together for learning and thus apply skills and knowledge to the best of his/her capacity while teaching.

Some of the qualities which every teacher must possess in order to become most acceptable are:

• Enthusiasm – It is a known fact that teachers who show enthusiasm while teaching create a positive atmosphere and learning environment which help students in gaining knowledge fast and with fun. These teachers don’t follow the uniform pattern instead, they innovate teaching methods to keep the students engaged and enthusiastic.

The most important role a teacher plays is in motivating the students; some of the students find their teacher to be a role model and try to imitate them. Thus it is very important that the teacher leaves a positive impression on each student.

• Interaction with learners – It is very important for the teacher to indulge into transparent and open discussion with the students in order to understand the capability of the learner. Some students are shy, while other may be afraid of failure. A teacher is highly trusted to build up the student emotionally and practically.

Conventionally, teaching is considered equivalent to praying. In olden days, parents used to leave their children in gurukul (a kind of residential school where students live with the teacher for studies). This tradition was greatly supported by the trust and bond between the parents and teachers. Even today, trust is one of the most important factors which motivate parents to get their children admitted in a particular school. A teacher is considered to be the alternate parents; this makes teaching all the more challenging and full of accountability.

In recent days, we get to hear a lot about corporal punishment. Some of the teachers get barbaric and beat students so badly that some of them don’t even survive. This is highly restricted in all over India. Though it is important for the teachers to be strict sometimes but there can be alternate methods to punish the students than harming them physically.

Well, I would like to end this note with a huge thanks to our teachers who are so caring and compassionate. We are highly honoured to be a part of this School.

Good evening everybody!

I welcome you all to this grand occasion. In our lifetime each of us has some or other teachers whom we consider as our idol.

Alright, so today I would like to talk to you about the one who lays the foundation of the existence of any school – ‘The Teacher’. Teacher is that one entity who strengthens the educational power of the students. They are the ones who link the students to the school and vice versa.

While I was young, I always used to associate my subject by the name of the teacher who used to teach that and also more the favourite teacher, more the marks in that subject… Yes, it’s a fact. Isn’t it, kids?

It is a proven fact that a teacher’s job is not just a job but it has an impact on the growth and well-being of the entire nation. Teachers play the most essential role in delivering what is desired. They are considered as the backbone of the society because they continuously contribute in building up the student’s characters, shaping their future and also help them to become ideal citizens of the country. A good teacher always inspires the hope, ignites the imagination, and instils the love of learning within us.

It isn’t true that the teacher works only when they have a class to address, before coming to the class they have a long handed homework to be done, yes… believe me, they do have! They need to be prepared for the topic to be taught, they have to get the tests prepared, the exercises ready and all that To-Do list prepared before they actually come on desk to perform their role. It is the responsibility of the teachers to continue doing their hard work and go through a variety of material that enriches their knowledge for the betterment of the society.

Teachers give us the moral support and encourage us to live a quality life in the society. They have the power to let the students understand the aspects of career growth, and future prospects in their desired fields.

Teachers help a student to shape their character and make their future bright. They enable us to stand strong in this world by building us from within, by making us sensible and knowledgeable so that we become capable of dealing with numerous challenges coming our way and helping us succeed.

As a conclusion, I would ask you all to always cherish the bond with your teachers. They are the ones who have educated you and have put in the efforts to bring you up in this society. We owe our respect and gratitude towards our teachers, they have empowered us with education, they have nurtured us with their love and affection just like our parents. Our respect makes them feel contended; they build the new blood to be a worthy soul in this nation.

Teachers have always been special and will continue to do so in all times to come.

Our most respected teachers, dear friends and students,

How may we express our heartfelt gratitude to our teachers? Friend, philosopher and guide all rolled into one. Yes, every teacher of ours has been just that.

Our teachers have facilitated our scholastic abilities and aptitudes. They have helped us cross the thresholds to possess the academic prerequisites to clear exams and qualify at different levels in our academic pursuits. They have been patient with us even as they got us grounded in the fundamentals of every subject. They have taught us with love. And that has often lightened even subjects that we found very tough.

But then our teachers have done much, much more than that. And we have learned from our teachers in so many different ways. Our teachers have guided us when we have faced difficult situations and dilemmas. When we have been low, and down and dejected they have been successful in raising our spirits and putting us right back on track. They have loved us even when we played truant and were mischievous and played pranks. They have offered us support in so many ways that made the process of education enjoyable. They have striven hard to inculcate in us human values and right ethics so that we may have a future guided by goodness and righteousness. They have helped us seek the truth and live by it at all times. They have given their time most generously, and offered advice most willingly. Isn’t it?

And naturally our teachers have been our role models. We have always looked up to our teachers with respect, awe and love. And we have always wondered if we could ever match up to them. Right?

Really speaking, it may never be possible for us to say all that our teachers have done for us and made possible for us so that we may work hard, excel and have a bright and happy future.

As we come together to thank our teachers, we find words are insufficient to do that. Words seem to pale before our teachers’ selfless service and devotion to the cause of educating, enlightening and moulding our minds, hearts and lives in totality. Words can never equal what our teachers have done for us with no expectation whatsoever.

Nevertheless, we have to resort to saying verbally a thank you to our teachers which is, of course, backed by our most sincere gratitude and deep love and appreciation.

Dear teachers, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to you all. You mean so much to us. What you have given us will help us go into the world for building our future.

All the beautiful flowers that could go into making a fragrant and extravagant bouquet would whither after a time, but dear teachers, our love and respect and regard for you for all that you have done to bolster and buttress our strength, and courage shall remain fresh always, in fact, will only grow and grow.

Dear friends, respected teachers and Principal Ma’am,

It is indeed so wonderful to be here on the occasion to mark Teacher’s Day.

As we look back there is a sense of nostalgia, of course, as we reminisce the academic institutions we attended as we went from school to college and then to university and other institutions of higher learning.

But at the root of it all is the great sense of gratitude we feel for our teachers at every level of our study and learning.

What would life have been but for our teachers? They, who taught us the alphabets and then through all the years of our study till we submitted, perhaps, our post-doctoral research work.

Education is so inter-linked with teachers. And when we glorify education as the means of enlightenment, emancipation and empowerment of people, men and women, we must really realize that the possibility becomes a realization through the patience, love, service and devotion of millions of teachers.

Go back in time and the person you most fondly remember will be the teacher who taught you, perhaps at kindergarten. That was the time when you, as a little child, left the comfort of your home and parents and went into a completely new environment and started to study and play with other children. And that kindergarten teacher was the person who was loving and caring, making the initiation to learning less painful, more comfortable.

As you grew up your teachers also became your mentors, advisers, supporters, counselors, sympathizers and role models. And your teachers were persons who made you independent thinkers, adventurous learners and inquisitive researchers. And they fostered you at every step. Even when our teachers seemed harsh or tough with us it was to make us strong and capable to deal with the reality most ably and most aptly that awaited us in the world. We realized that later. And we were only overwhelmed with gratitude.

These memories flood our minds and hearts as we remember our dear teachers. Yes, indeed!

Years may roll on and time flies, yet our teachers have a very special place in our hearts. That it seems is the power of sharing. When teachers teach us it is really that they share so much of their time, learning and life skills with us. Teachers are indeed so generous, and that is what transforms the lives of students year after year.

When we come together on occasions such as today to celebrate the lives and work of teachers, let us determine to share, in our own way, something that we may be endowed with, with those who may lack it. When we can do something akin to what our teachers did for us, it would only make our teachers happy and proud of us. It may be one way of saying a big thank you to our teachers.

Nothing can equal what our teachers have done for us. But we can try in whatever small way we can.

What a teacher in hiding can tell us about our failure to tackle intolerance

A class about free speech was cynically exploited by activists to incite fury in a local community

T hree years ago, on 25 March 2021, a teacher from Batley Grammar School (BGS) in West Yorkshire was  forced into hiding after a religious studies class he gave led to protests from Muslim parents and to death threats . Today, that incident has been largely forgotten. Except by the teacher. He can’t forget it because, extraordinarily, he and his family are still in hiding. Equally extraordinarily, little is said about this.

The debate about the events at BGS, like many about Islam, blasphemy and offence, has been framed by two polarised arguments. Many on the reactionary right (and not just the reactionary right) view such confrontations as the unacceptable price of mass immigration and the inevitable product of a Muslim presence in western societies. Many liberals and radicals, on the other hand, think it morally wrong to cause offence, believing that for diverse societies to function, there is a need to self-censor so as not to disrespect different cultures and beliefs. Neither argument bears much scrutiny. The most comprehensive account of the events at BGS comes in a review published last week by Sara Khan , the government’s independent adviser on “social cohesion and resilience”. The lesson that sparked the controversy was designed, ironically, to explore issues of blasphemy and free speech, and of appropriate ways of responding to religious disagreements.

One of the images shown to pupils was, apparently, a caricature of Muhammad wearing a turban containing a bomb. Little wonder, some might think, that it caused controversy. Did it not occur to the teacher that showing such a caricature would inflame tensions?

Except that it is not so simple. The lesson had been approved by the school leadership team and had been taught for the previous two years without any problems. So why did it cause such a furore this time? Because this time the fury was instigated by outside activist groups.

Key among these, as Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens, an academic researching terrorism and radicalisation, notes in a recent report on “Blasphemy Extremism” , was the Muslim Action Forum (MAF). Founded in 2012 by a group of academics and activists, its goal is to prevent any depiction of Muhammad, “the worst kind of ‘Hate Crime ’ that can be perpetrated on the 3 million Muslims in the UK and 1.7 billion Muslims worldwide”.

MAF helped organise the Batley school protests, claiming in an open letter to the then prime minister Boris Johnson that the religious studies class had been “inciting hatred and Islamophobia whilst pushing forward extremist white supremacist ideology”. It publicly named the teacher, which led to death threats, and forced him into hiding.

Also central to the Batley protests was Adil Shahzad, a leading British supporter of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), an organisation with a history of supporting violence against supposed blasphemers, in Pakistan and beyond. These individuals and organisations are part of what Meleagrou-Hitchens describes as “a new generation of UK-based anti-blasphemy activists”.

Blasphemy is not just about defending the dignity of the divine but also about protecting sources of secular power. As long ago as 1676, England’s lord chief justice, Sir Matthew Hale, observed, in a blasphemy trial , that to disparage Christianity would “dissolve all those obligations whereby civil societies are preserved”. The outlawing of blasphemy was seen as a necessary defence of secular political authority.

Today, Christianity no longer plays that role in Britain. In many Muslim majority countries, though, the charge of blasphemy remains a powerful tool for those in power to consolidate support, silence critics and target minorities. In the west, so-called community leaders – usually self-appointed gatekeepers – similarly use blasphemy claims to police Muslim communities and reinforce their power within them.

The authority of such gatekeepers derives not just from their roles within communities but also from their relationships to wider social institutions. From Whitehall departments to local authorities, from schools to businesses, organisations that anchor society often defer to them as authentic voices. In so doing, they privilege what are usually more conservative, religious figures and ignore the plurality of opinion within Muslim communities.

In Batley, the school immediately suspended the teacher, and “ unequivocally” apologised “for using a totally inappropriate resource”, promising to review the curriculum with “all the communities represented in our school”. Both the local council and the local MP at the time, Tracy Brabin, welcomed the apology. The police, according to Khan, provided the teacher with little support, even after the death threats.

The willingness of key institutions to engage with “community leaders”, some of whom did not come from Batley, and to accept that it was wrong to offend them, while effectively abandoning the teacher, reveals much of what is misguided about the “take me to your leader” approach of managing diversity.

The problem exposed by cases such as Batley derives neither from the presence of Muslims in this country, nor from the giving of offence, but from the way that reactionary groups and leaders have come to be seen as representing those communities, an approach that serves to silence many Muslim voices and traditions. In the Batley controversy, as in many similar cases, there has been a widespread assumption that Islam forbids the depiction of Muhammad, a claim even to be found in West Yorkshire’s “ agreed syllabus for religious education ”.

Yet there have been many Islamic traditions , particularly in Iran, Turkey and India, open to depicting Muhammad . Today’s reactionaries, though, have seized on prohibition as a means of strengthening their control over Muslim communities. For schools and councils to accept blandly that “Islam prohibits depictions of Muhammad” is to accept only the most conservative views as being representative of the faith.

Some critics argue that the problem in Batley was not that the cartoon depicted Muhammad but that it was racist. Racist material, whether a cartoon or a book, can, however, be used in ways that heighten prejudices or in ways that allow students to think more deeply about the issue and reduce racial or religious tensions. What matters is the manner and context in which the material is approached.

That three years on, the Batley teacher should still be in hiding is an indictment of our institutions and of their failure to robustly challenge intolerance, whether coming from Muslims or directed towards them. If there is one lesson we should learn from this mess, it is that opposing anti-Muslim bigotry and challenging restrictions on blasphemy necessarily go hand in hand.

Taylor Swift to give keynote at 2024 AIA Conference

Emerging music artist Taylor Swift has been announced as the keynote speaker for the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design 2024 . In advance of the event, Archinect has gained exclusive access to a leaked version of Swift’s speech, which is titled ‘A New Architecture Era.’ 

Swift is expected to begin her speech by taking an adversarial tone with the AIA, questioning if her invitation to deliver the keynote speech was made as a joke. “I don’t like your little games,” she will say. “Don’t like your tilted stage; the role you made me play of the fool.”

In addition to taking aim at the AIA, Swift is also expected to use the speech to offer an atonement for her involvement as an advisor for Saudi Arabia’s NEOM project. “I knew you were trouble when you walked in,” she will say, directly addressing the project organizers. “So, shame on me now. You flew me to places I’d never been, now I’m lyin’ on the cold hard ground.”

Turning to her vision for the future of the built environment, Swift will dwell on the simple solutions available to architects to improve urban streets , including installing furniture such as benches and seating areas for citizens to enjoy. “Walking the streets with you in your worn-out jeans, I can’t help thinking this is how it ought to be,” Swift’s speech reads. “Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself: Hey, isn’t this easy?”

Having recently downsized her fleet of private jets from two to one, Swift is expected to encourage the audience to practice environmental responsibility in their own work. Emphasizing the need for buildings to be designed with longevity and resilience in mind, Swift will say: “It’s gonna be forever, Or it’s gonna go down in flames.” In a message to those skeptical of investing in resilient design, Swift goes on to say: “You can tell me when it’s over, mm, If the high was worth the pain.”

Swift is expected to close the speech by offering future services as a design consultant. “I could show you incredible things,” Swift will say about her design ability. “Magic, madness, heaven, sin.” Seeking to dismiss negative feedback from previous clients, she will continue: “Got a long list of ex-lovers. They’ll tell you I’m insane,” before suggesting that interested design teams reach out to schedule an initial consultation. “I’ve got a blank space, baby,” the speech concludes. “And I’ll write your name.”

yeah lets get the trendy artist to speak who doesn't know anything about architecture to give us a keynote. As if watching the superbowl clips of her weren't enough. 

Sounds believable for AIA. Yeah, it's April 1st but if she was actually going to do that, cool. The only thing I would have a reason for disbelief is AIA letting someone as a keynote speaker, that would criticize the AIA in such a critical fashion. Hard to know Taylor Swift's position on architectural matters. Have she even been asked or opine on the subject matter? I don't know. Given that it isn't unheard of for Archinect to do an April's Fools Day joke, I'll consider this a probable joke for the day. However, it is actually a fairly believable joke. Good job, Archinect. A joke believable enough to not be instantly disbelieved. I could actually see AIA doing that if they cobbled enough money and crowd to sponsor also a music stage show or something like that.

Now that I dropped a ton of $$$$ on company stock that makes swift boats, where do I sign up for tickets to the lecture?

WHEN A 'DIFFICULT CONVERSATION' THREATENS FREE SPEECH. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is perhaps the leading Trump inquisitor in the House of Representatives. He led one impeachment, played a key role in another, and helped produce the anti-Trump reality series that was the Jan. 6 committee. So when Raskin proposes to give a speech titled Democracy, Autocracy, and the Threat to Reason in the 21st Century, you can probably guess what it is going to be about.

That was the speech  Raskin was scheduled to deliver Thursday at the University of Maryland. One might ask: What could go wrong with bashing former President Donald Trump on a college campus? Such a speech would be very well received, wouldn't it? 

Only if the speaker were allowed to speak.  In this case, Raskin got just a few sentences into his remarks before he was interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters who yelled that Raskin is "complicit in genocide." In that moment, the Israel-Hamas war trumped Trump, and Raskin's prepared remarks went unspoken. (What follows is based on this account by Capital News Service.)

Raskin did not ignore the protesters.  He told them they would be better off engaging in conversation than "heckling." Then, according to Capital News Service, Raskin "emphasized that he has taken a strong position on returning the hostages held by Hamas, has advocated a military ceasefire, and has championed a two-state solution." Raskin then tried to resume his speech, which just led to more yelling from the protesters. At that point, Raskin said the protesters were "not engaging in real dialogue" and "not convincing anybody."

Raskin surely knew  that there would be no reasoning with the protesters. At some point, it appears there were pro-Israel voices in the crowd to answer the anti-Israel demonstrators. There was more heckling and yelling, and it soon became clear there was no way Raskin was going to continue his remarks. Then, according to Capital News Service , Raskin "abandoned his speech and said he was open to taking questions from the audience.”

That didn't work, either.  Raskin's openness just led to "more discourse among protesters," which is a polite way of saying everybody kept yelling at Raskin and one another. Any hope of discussing "democracy, autocracy, and the threat to reason in the 21st century" disappeared entirely. Indeed, the scene made the "threat to reason" part seem like a joke. Finally, the president of the University of Maryland, Darryll Pines, stepped in to stop Raskin's speech.

All in all,  it was another bad day for freedom of speech on college campuses, something the nation's institutions of higher education have seen a lot of in the last few years. The situation has become exponentially worse since the Hamas attack on Israel and amid Israel's retaliation.

Here's the thing.  University of Maryland officials should have been appalled that protesters stopped a member of Congress from speaking on campus. They should have vowed to take strong measures to punish those who shouted Raskin down and stop such demonstrations in the future. But they didn't. In fact, Pines seemed somewhat pleased by what happened to Raskin's speech.

"He came here  to speak about where our democracy is going in our country," Pines said of Raskin. "What you saw play out actually was democracy and free speech and academic freedom. From our perspective as a university, there are the difficult conversations that we should be having."

Just in case it needs saying:  Shouting down Raskin was not an exercise in free speech, and it was not an exercise in academic freedom. It was in fact the opposite of free speech and academic freedom. That a university president would say such a thing should be embarrassing to the university.

Finally, it should be noted  that Pines did say he wished the protesters had been more civil, according to the Capital News Service report . Pines also praised Raskin's "patience and empathy" when confronted by the protesters who prevented him from speaking. So Pines seemed to understand at some level that what happened was not a good thing. It is too bad he did not recognize the greater threat to free speech that happened in front of his eyes.

Johns Hopkins defines stuttering as a voice speech disorder. Stuttering affects more than 80 million people worldwide, and in the United States, more than one million Americans stutter.

A voice disorder is a problem with pitch, volume, tone, and other qualities of your voice that occurs when vocal cords don't vibrate normally. There are several types of voice disorders classified as organic, which include structural and neurological (caused by a neurological disorder like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's), functional (muscle dysfunction), and psychogenic disorders.

A Dutch start-up has created an app designed to give a voice to people with voice disorders or speech disorders, such as stuttering.

Using artificial intelligence (AI), the Whispp app enables them to make understandable and relaxed phone and video calls.

"The app has a real-time assistive voice technology that converts voiceless/vocal cord-impaired speech or whispered speech (speech that does not have a clear pitch) into natural and voiced speech," said Joris Castermans, CEO of Whispp. "People who stutter severely, for example, can reduce their stuttering frequency by an average of 85% while whispering. Additionally, people who suffer from spasmodic dysphonia or recurrent respiratory papillomatosis speak much more relaxed and fluently when they whisper."

In an email interview, Castermans said the Whispp enables users to express themselves better and easier, enhancing their quality of life and allowing them to participate more fully in society.

"Communication is a fundamental aspect of human existence that presents a daily challenge for people who suffer from a voice disability or stutter severely," said Castermans. "The inability to communicate can lead to social isolation and, in many cases, feelings of inadequacy and depression."

With their own AI models for Whispp, the AI is audio-to-audio based with no textual intermediate, so the company doesn't use language models.

"With this, Whisper converts non-voiced speech with a very low latency," said Castermans. "Whispp's AI converts every 20 milliseconds of audio into a real-time stream.

Whispp uses real-time, audio-to-audio-based assistive voice AI to create real-time speech conversion and accommodates a range of voice types — from whispers to rough esophageal speech. This allows the app to create a tailored solution for several voice conditions.

For example, Castermans says people who stutter severely speak fluently and are relaxed when they whisper. "This is because of a neurological change that occurs while they are speaking; aside from this, people who stutter severely didn't 'learn' to be anxious while whispering."

Castermans says that big tech and assistive speech tech companies predominantly focus on Automatic Speech Recognition, known as speech-to-text (STT), for non-standard speech. "This is very helpful for patients with reduced articulation (ALS, MS, stroke and Parkinson's Disease) who can use text-to-speech to synthesize their speech."

"The disadvantage of this approach, however, is the high latency of two to three seconds, which creates barriers to natural conversation," said Castermans. "As a result, current AI speech technology solutions do not provide an adequate solution for people with voice disorders who have lost their voice but still have good articulation."

The Whispp app is available on Android and IoS.
