How to Turn Your Handwritten Notes Into Digital Text
These apps and device features can also help you transcribe audio, extract text from images.
Marc Saltzman,
Do you have weeks-old scribblings from a meeting that you need to use in a report? Do you have text in an image that you would like to extract? Have an audio interview with a family member but don’t want to manually transcribe it?

If you answered yes to any of these scenarios, you could benefit from the latest apps and features — for smartphones, tablets and computers — that can do the heavy lifting for you. These time-saving tools are often baked right into your device, and you simply need to find and use them. In other instances, you’ll need to download software or visit a website.
Many of the solutions are free or close to it.
Technology that can lift words and numbers from a photo and convert it into digital text is called OCR, which stands for optical character recognition. Why go through all this trouble? Once it’s in text, you can then edit the sentences, search by keyword, and share it in an email, post it to social media or save it as a document. For example, if you take a photo of a business card someone hands you, that information can be imported into your Contacts.
Similarly, artificial intelligence (AI) can convert your sloppy handwriting into text or transcribe audio into typed words.
It’s essential to review these conversions before you share them. OCR and AI, like human beings, are far from perfect.
Change audio into text
All smartphones and tablets let you tap a little microphone, usually to the right of the keyboard, that enables you to talk instead of type. And the words are typed out in real time.
If you do this, say, while in Notes, you can lay the phone down and have a discussion with someone, and the conversation will be transcribed.
If you have an iPhone, you can say, “Hey, Siri,” followed by “Make a new note.” Talk and the words will be typed out as you speak them. But remember to say punctuation such as “period,” “comma” and “question mark.”
Computer users who have Microsoft 365 — a suite of productivity programs that includes Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint — will see a Dictate button at the top of the screen. Click that and the microphone will capture audio and translate it into text.

Similarly, if you use the free Google Docs, open it in a Chrome browser, start a new document and click Tools at the top of the screen. One option is Voice Typing. Click it when you’re ready to speak.
Even better is Otter, one of the most powerful solutions for mobile phone and computer users, which gives you 600 minutes of audio or video transcription a month in its free version. It could save you several hours of manual transcribing, and the AI is surprisingly fast and accurate. It even works with video chatting services like Zoom .

Along with tapping the microphone and transcribing audio in real time, Otter also can convert recorded audio into text. In other words, Otter can turn files that you import into digital text, including .acc, .m4a, .mp3, .wav and .wma audio files and .avi, .mov, .mp4, .mpg and .wmv video files.
Convert handwriting into text
You have a few ways to turn your chicken scratch into digital text.
Microsoft’s OneNote , which is also part of the Microsoft 365 suite, includes a conversion tool so you can change handwritten text into typed text. This is useful if you want to share your handwritten notes in a more legible format with other people.
To convert handwriting to text, start a new note, and on the Draw tab, choose the Lasso Select button. With your finger or stylus pen on a touchscreen device or a computer mouse on a laptop, press down on the screen and draw a selection around the handwriting that you want to convert; when you let go, the ink strokes in your handwriting should appear selected. Now click or tap Ink to Text to convert your handwriting selection to typed text.
Fun fact: OneNote will automatically format the converted text in the same color as the ink your handwriting was in.
Once the handwriting has been converted, you can select Edit and format the text any way you want.
Evernote is another great option for converting handwriting into text. The free version allows you to sync up to two devices with a 25-megabyte maximum note size. Like OneNote, everything is synchronized in the cloud, so all devices will always have the same up-to-the-minute notes.
Among several other features, the more robust Evernote Personal plan ($7.99 a month or $69.99 a year) includes syncing unlimited devices, 200-megabyte maximum note size, document scanning, and searching for text inside images, documents and PDFs.
Other good iPhone and iPad note-taking apps that support handwriting include GoodNotes 5, Notability, Notes Plus, Pen to Print, Text Scanner and WritePad for iPad. For Android users, the Google Play store has other handy apps for this, including Adobe Scan, CamScanner, Google Keep, Readiris and Smart Lens.

How to Convert an Image With Handwriting to Text Using OCR
Need to digitize handwritten notes for editing or save them for later? Here are the best OCR tools to convert handwriting to text.
Do you need to digitize handwritten notes to edit or index them? Or would you like to copy text from the picture of a handwritten quote? What you need is something called an optical character recognition (OCR) tool.
OCR tools analyze the handwritten or typed text in images and convert it into editable text. Some tools even have spell checkers that give additional help in the case of unrecognizable words. We've tested some of the best OCR tools to convert handwriting to text.
1. Microsoft OneNote
Availability: Windows, Mac, Web, iOS, and Android
Microsoft OneNote is a digital note-taking program that doubles up as a pretty good handwriting OCR app. Right-click on an imported picture and you'll see the option to Copy Text From Picture . Use this command to extract letters from the image and convert them to text you can edit. This option works in seconds.
As with all handwriting OCR apps, the results can be patchy at times. On the whole, though, it works pretty well even with harder-to-read writing. Write your notes in uppercase and you'll find it to be a more than serviceable tool.
Microsoft OneNote is a free, cloud-based program that you can use across various devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers. If you're interested in learning more, our OneNote FAQ guide has all the information you need.

2. Google Drive and Google Docs
Availability: Web, Android, and iOS
Google has a few tools that can turn handwriting into text, and chances are you've already got them.
The first is Google Drive. Open the app on your phone, hit the + icon in the bottom corner, and select Scan . The PDFs it saves aren't editable in Drive itself, but they are searchable. If you've got handwritten notes that you just need to index, this is the ideal solution.
But when you do need to turn handwritten notes into editable text as well, a combination of Drive with Google Docs is what you need.
First up, scan your note to create a PDF doc, as before. Then jump over to your desktop and open Google Drive . Locate the scanned file, right-click, and select Open with > Google Docs . This opens the PDF as a text file in Docs, and you can edit, or copy and paste the text into another document. It also automatically saves the editable version into Drive.
There's a third option. The Google Lens app (it's part of the larger Google app on iOS) lets you search for real-world objects by pointing your camera at them. It works with text, too. Hover your phone's camera over some printed or handwritten text and wait a few seconds while it gets decoded. Then tap to complete the search.
With the power of machine learning behind it, Google has some of the best OCR for handwriting tools .
Download: Google Drive for Android | iOS (Free)
Download: Google Lens for Android | iOS (Free)
Google Lens comes pre-installed on most Android phones. Apple's iPhone has a built-in option, too. The Notes app can also work as a cursive reader, turning your handwriting into digital text. Create a new note, tap the camera icon, then select the Scan Text option to give it a try.
3. Adobe Scan
Availability: Android and iOS
Another of the big tech giants, Adobe, has a scanning app that can work with handwriting. To use it, tap the Camera icon, select Document (or you can try Whiteboard to see if that gives better results), and then line up and shoot the page you want to scan. You can also use it with images already in your phone's gallery if you want.
Open the image by tapping the thumbnail in the bottom right corner, then select the Recognizing Text button in the top right. The app will take a few seconds to try and decipher what you've written, then select Copy Text to copy it to your clipboard. You can now open any writing app—a notes app, Google Docs, a text message—and paste it in.
In our tests, the results were very mixed. It works well as a traditional OCR app with printed text but struggles with anything but the clearest handwriting. It does support exporting the scanned PDFs to Google Drive, though, so you can use it in conjunction with Google's text recognition instead.

4. Simple OCR
Availability: Desktop only
This freeware tool recognizes approximately 120,000 words and allows you to add more words to its dictionary. Boasting up to 99% accuracy, SimpleOCR even identifies formatted text, and it's possible to set it to ignore formatting, too. For added accuracy, you can use the despeckle or noisy document features if the handwriting you're converting is messy.
SimpleOCR is a speedy tool, especially since you can set it to decipher whole documents, portions, or multiple documents in batches. However, the aforementioned accuracy rating is clearly for printed text in pictures and less so for handwritten media. When comparing SimpleOCR with the Microsoft or Google tools, you'll probably find the latter work better.
Download: SimpleOCR (Free)
5. Online OCR
Availability: Web
This straightforward website allows you to go through the process of uploading an image, choosing an output format, and downloading the completed file in less than a minute. Registration is not required for basic use of this free site. You'll just have to complete a captcha.
However, during a test of a PNG photograph of handwriting to TXT format, Online OCR spat out random gibberish that failed to match the handwriting at all, so use this tool with a grain of salt. Because it's cheap and easy to use, there's no harm in seeing if you get better results. One possible perk of Online OCR is it recognizes many languages.
If you prefer not to use an app, check out these other download-free OCR tools you can find online.
Try: Online OCR (Free)
Availability: Windows only
TopOCR is one of the best pieces of handwriting recognition software.
Using a sourced image captured by a scanner or digital camera, TopOCR offers a dual-pane format that displays the original image on the left and the conversion on the right. Expect it to work reasonably well if your handwritten text appears from left to right. If it features columns, the program will likely not be accurate.
TopOCR is efficient, supports 11 languages, and has a PDF export feature. A shareware app, the free version is capable enough to enable you to easily verify whether it will work for your needs and decide about buying the full, feature-unlocked program. One limitation of TopOCR is it only works on Windows computers.
Download: TopOCR (Free trial or $4.99 for full program)
Made for the Windows platform, FreeOCR works with images and PDFs. It hasn't been updated for many years, so while the conversion time is very fast, the accuracy is dismal.
The original technology that runs FreeOCR was never designed to convert scanned handwriting to text. However, some users say after they used the program for that purpose repeatedly and carefully followed instructions in users' guides and forums, accuracy got better. It's worth a try if you don't get better results from the other options here.

Get Text From Handwritten Notes
When you need to scan handwriting to text, it's hard to look beyond what Google has to offer. It isn't flawless and depends to a great extent on how clear your writing is in the first place, but is capable of producing some excellent results.
One surefire way to get better results is to make sure your writing is easy to read. As such, consider brushing up on your handwriting—if you're more used to typing, you're probably out of practice.

GoodNotes 4: Best Note Taking App & How to Convert Handwriting to Text
When I received my iPad Pro 9.7” a few months ago, the first thing I did was run out and buy an Apple Pencil . It seriously hurt to shell out that $100 but, I have to say, that was one of the best purchasing decisions I made in a long time. While the fine precision and pressure-sensitive technology is great for art, I mostly use it for taking notes. Not all note taking apps are made equal, though, and few can convert handwriting to text as well as GoodNotes 4 !
GoodNotes 4 — The Best Note Taking App for iPad Pro & Apple Pencil
At first, I tried taking notes in the free Notes app. While this app does support the Apple Pencil , it is so bare bones and klunky. I downloaded several free apps but it was a pain to use them. For a while, I was using a paid app we already had called PDF Expert (costs $9.99). This program allows you to highlight, type text, add signatures, annotate PDFs freely, and more. But, I still wasn’t able to take notes in a way that felt natural to me. PDF Expert is great for editing documents and scribbling things here and there. But, for straight note taking, the functionality was lacking.
After reading several online reviews and getting a recommendation from one of my sisters, I decided to try out GoodNotes 4 . This app is $7.99 in the App Store and I have to tell you that it is worth every penny. As far as I’m concerned, this is as close to writing with paper and pen as you can get using digital media. Create notebooks with colorful covers, choose from different paper types (lined grid, wide ruled, blank, music sheets, etc.), and organize notebooks into category folders. You can write, draw, type, highlight, underline, circle, and add graphic elements to any PDF file.
How to Use GoodNotes 4 to Convert Handwriting to Text
Since GoodNotes uses an advanced OCR technology (Optical Character Recognition), you can even search through handwritten notes. Using that same technology, it can also convert handwriting to text. Yes, you read that right. Even if you have terribly messy scribble-scrabble like mine, the app can identify the characters and turn it into digital text. This gives you the best of both worlds — handwritten notes vs typed text.
It seems to be about 95% accurate. GoodNotes even adds little arrow symbols when I draw them in my notes. I can then use that text to use in posts on my blog or social media. It’s super simple to do this too. Here’s a quick tutorial of how to convert handwriting to text using GoodNotes 4 . In the demonstration, I am using an iPad Pro 9.7” and an Apple Pencil . For reference, I will also include the steps below.
- Write notes on your iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil.
- Use lasso tool to draw around the text.
- Tap inside lasso and select “Convert.”
- When a box with the converted text pops up, tap the share icon (box with an up arrow on it).
- Tap “Copy.”
- Paste the converted text in your desired page or app. If you want to use the text on your Macbook, you can simply “paste” it if the account is synced with your tablet. Or, you can Air Drop the copied text in place of step 5.
- Do a quick check for accuracy and fix any words or punctuation that did not translate well.
- Tap anywhere outside lasso to deselect text.
GoodNotes 4 has many other features but I am not familiar with them yet. But, since the app allows me to easily take notes, organize them, search them, and to convert handwriting to text, it’s already an invaluable tool for me. GoodNote 4 is the best note taking app in my opinion. It has brought my fondness of the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to another level. I hope the app continues to get better here on out!
