How to make a Facebook 3D photo

Grab your friends' attention with interactive 3D images

If you’re trying to figure out how to make a Facebook 3D photo, you’ll be happy to know that you’re not alone.

Launched in the first half of 2018, Facebook’s 3D photo feature is still fairly new. 3D photos have been around for a while on Facebook, but until now it's only been possible to post one if you had a phone with a dual camera, which could capture two images and generate a depth map. So, it isn’t surprising that not a lot of people have utilized this feature, let alone know how to use it.

How does this feature work? It turns any ordinary photo into a 3D image that can be viewed from different perspectives when you tilt or rotate your phone or start scrolling. It does so by using machine learning to extrapolate the three-dimensional shape of objects in your image then generate a convincing 3D effect from that.

The best part is that it can be applied to any photo. It can even be used on decades-old images and works on any mid-range phone running Android or iOS, making it one of the nifties features Facebook has to date.

If you want to switch things up on your Facebook profile, knowing how to make a Facebook 3D photo is definitely a good start. Let us show you how below.

Make a Facebook 3D photo

Creating a Facebook 3D photo really isn’t that much harder than posting a regular photo or video. That’s because Facebook does the processing for you.

  • Launch the Facebook app and tap ‘What’s on your mind’.
  • Tap on ‘Photo/Video’.
  • Select the image you want to use then tap ‘Done’.
  • Right at the top of your image, you’ll see a ‘Make 3D’ option. Tap then wait for the image to be processed.
  • Preview the 3D effect by moving your phone.
  • Add text and any other content to your post, then tap ‘Post’.

Tips for better results

Remember that what you’re getting isn’t going to be an actual 3D image, so results will vary depending on the images. The effect is quite convincing, but the app can't create new data that isn't already in the image, so it will extrapolate what the area behind the picture's subject will look like based on nearby pixels. This will sometimes result in a background that looks a little blurry, so it's best to avoid intricately patterned backdrops.

Facebook says the tool works best if you avoid images with narrow objects in the foreground, or with lots of reflections. It's also a good idea to pick images with objects at various depths for the best effect.

Facebook is currently working to make 3D photos created this way even more convincing, so we look forward to seeing an even more impressive version in the future.

What to Know

  • Posting 3D photos to Facebook with an iPhone requires a  dual-lens camera  and  Portrait Mode .
  • Select What's on your mind > Photo/Video , choose a photo, and select Done . Then, select Make 3D and share your post as normal.
  • A plain background works best, and colors shouldn't blend too much.

If your Facebook page is looking a bit dull, liven it up by adding a 3D photo. Facebook has a feature that transforms certain pictures into photos with a 3D effect. Here's everything you need to know about creating and posting a 3D image to Facebook with your iPhone or Android device.

Posting a 3D photo to Facebook is easy on supported iPhones and Android devices.

The steps to posting a 3D photo are basically identical whether you use Android or iOS, but the interfaces may have slight visual differences. Here's what to do.

To post 3D photos to Facebook with an iPhone, your model must have a dual-lens camera and Portrait Mode . Supported devices include the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max; iPhone X, XS, and XS Max; iPhone 8 Plus; and iPhone 7 Plus.

To post 3D photos to Facebook with an Android, your device needs Portrait Mode, Lens Blur, or Live Focus Mode. Supported devices include the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Note 9; Samsung Galaxy S9+, S10, S10E, S10+, and S10 5G; Samsung Galaxy Fold; Google Pixel and Pixel XL; Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL; and Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL.

Select What's on your mind at the top of your News Feed.

Select Photo/Video .

Select a Portrait Mode photo from your Camera Roll or an album and select  Done . You'll see  3D  in the lower-right corner of eligible photos.

Tap  Make 3D  in the upper-left corner of the photo.

Wait a few moments as Facebook processes the photo, and then the 3D photo appears.

Move your iPhone around a little to see your 3D photo in action.

To remove the 3D effect, tap  Remove 3D  in the upper-left corner.

Write something about the post, if you like, then select Share  or  Post .

3D Photo Posting Notes

For the best perspective-shifting photos, take a look at how your photo subject contrasts with the background. Colors shouldn't blend too much and a plain background works best.

There are a few restrictions when sharing 3D photos. When posting a 3D photo to Facebook, 3D photos can't be edited, and Facebook may not be able to convert edited photos to 3D. You can only share one 3D photo at a time, and you can't add 3D photos to an album.

Tips for the Best 3D Picture

You can select any photo you want to create your 3D picture for Facebook. However, there are a few guidelines and tips you should be aware of to create the best results:

  • Don’t edit your photo. If you edit your photo you may not be able to post it as a 3D photo.
  • Only share one photo. If you share multiple photos at once the option to create a 3D photo will not appear.
  • Avoid images with narrow objects as the focus or with a reflection.
  • Due to the way the technology extrapolates what the area behind the subject looks like, try to avoid busy backgrounds or backgrounds that closely match your subject.

Facebook 3d photos: how to create and view perspective-shifting pics.

Facebook offers a 3D photo feature that's designed to add a layer of depth to photos in your news feed.

It can capture the distance between the subject in the foreground and the background of a photo to "bring scenes to life with depth and movement", Facebook said. The company described it as a "new way to share your memories and moments in time with a fun, lifelike dimension in both news feed and VR".

Here's how Facebook 3D photos work, including how to view and create them.

What are Facebook 3D photos?

First rolled out in May 2018, 3D photos are essentially immersive photos that appear in your news feed. The feature draws from the depth map in an image captured by a dual-camera phone, and then it adds some custom software enhancements. The end result should be a perspective-shifting, pseudo-3D image.

How to view Facebook 3D photos?

In October 2018, everyone on Facebook got the ability to view 3D photos via the Facebook mobile app. You can also view them with the Oculus Go VR headset’s web browser or with Firefox on the Oculus Rift. But you do not need a VR headset; you can just use the Facebook mobile app on your phone.

While using your phone, if you see a 3D photo in your news feed, scroll or tilt your device to slightly change the perspective.

How to create and share Facebook 3D photos

The easiest way to create 3D photos is with the Facebook app for iOS. You can share them to your news feed, a group, or a page.

Requirements

You’ll need an iPhone with dual cameras:

  • iPhone 7, 7+
  • iPhone 8, 8+
  • iPhone X, XR, XS, XS Max
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max

Create and share a 3D photo

It's easy to get started. Just create a new Facebook post...

  • Open the latest version of the Facebook mobile app.
  • Tap What's on your mind? at the top of your news feed.
  • Tap Write something... in a group or Create a post on a Page.
  • Tap Photo/Video.
  • Select your photo and tap Done.
  • Tap Make 3D in the top left of your photo.
  • Tap Share or Post.

Note: To remove the 3D effect, tap Remove 3D in the top left of your photo

Tips and tricks

Here are a few things to consider when creating and sharing a 3D photo:

  • You'll get the best results if your main subject is three or four feet away.
  • Capture scenes with multiple layers of depth (like your family in a field of flowers).
  • Capture subjects with contrasting colours (avoid a blue truck in front of a blue wall).
  • Capture subjects that have some texture to them, solid edges, and aren’t too shiny.
  • Avoid transparent objects like clear plastic or glass, as the depth sensors can miss those.

Anything else you should know?

Only one 3D photo can be shared at a time. (In other words, your post can't contain multiple 3D photos.) They also can't be added to an album.

When will Facebook 3D photos be available?

Everyone on Facebook can already view 3D photos in their news feeds with the Facebook mobile app or with Oculus VR headsets.

But only iPhone users can create and share 3D photos on Facebook. There's no word yet when Android users will get the ability.

How To : Add 3D Photos to Facebook Using Portrait Mode Pictures for Moving, Depth-Filled Images

Add 3D Photos to Facebook Using Portrait Mode Pictures for Moving, Depth-Filled Images

Facebook added a new feature that lets you post 3D versions of your portrait mode photos for all your family and friends to see on their smartphones, computers, and virtual reality goggles. These new 3D photos add a whole new dimension to your images with movement and more depth.

There have been other ways to post interactive photos on Facebook before, so the notion of moving images in your Facebook news feed isn't entirely new.

First, there were 360-degree photos you could take with a special camera or by using a 360-degree mobile app or panoramic mode on your smartphone; Then, you would post them as regular photos on Facebook. Second, a dedicated "360 Photo" mode was added to the Facebook mobile app, which let you shoot and post a 3D-like image without ever leaving Facebook.

The new "3D Photos" method will likely be the most popular since you can upload all of the portrait mode photos that you already took on your smartphone.

Compatible Devices

As of right now, only iPhone models with "Portrait mode" are compatible with 3D Photos on Facebook, so all of the following smartphones work. Unfortunately, even though the iPhone X R supports Portrait mode, it only has one rear camera lens, and that's enough to bar it from using Facebook's 3D Photos feature.

  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone8 Plus
  • iPhoneXS Max
  • iPhone11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max

Some Android phones can also take advantage of 3D Photos on Facebook, but these phones also require dual-rear cameras and a portrait mode-like shooting option. Like Apple's version, some use the "Portrait Mode" term, while others have "Live Focus" or "Lens Blur" features. The list of supported devices right now includes:

  • Samsung Galaxy S9+
  • Samsung Galaxy S10
  • Samsung Galaxy S10E
  • Samsung Galaxy S10+
  • Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Fold
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10
  • Google Pixel
  • Google Pixel XL
  • Google Pixel 2
  • Google Pixel 2 XL
  • Google Pixel 3
  • Google Pixel 3 XL
  • Google 3a XL

Hopefully, other Android devices will work since Samsung and Google aren't the only OEMs with a portait-style mode. For instance, there's the Honor 7X , Moto X4 , OnePlus 5T , and Huawei Mate 10 Pro ; to name a few possibilities. Facebook uses depth maps that are stored inside portrait mode photos, so if your device doesn't store depth map information in portraits, it will never make the list.

Post 3D Photos on Facebook

While Facebook announced this feature in May 2018 at its F8 developer conference, it didn't begin rolling out to mobile users everywhere until October 2018 . If you can't follow the instructions below, it's likely because Facebook didn't or won't be adding support for your particular smartphone.

To add one of your portrait mode photos on Facebook as a 3D photo, first make sure you're running the latest version of Facebook on Android or iOS. Then, start to make a Facebook post like you normally would.

Next, tap "3D Photo" from the list of actions at the bottom. If you don't see it, swipe up on the list to view all of the actions, and you should see "3D Photo" among the options — tap it. If you don't see the list right away, tap the "3D" button at the bottom to open it, then select it.

An album with all of the supported portrait mode pictures in it will open. From there, choose the photo that you want to use. If the photo was previously edited, you will get a warning that says, "A 3D Photo couldn't be created. Try selecting another Portrait mode photo that has not been edited."

After selecting a photo, Facebook will automatically build the 3D Photo version, and you'll see it on the next screen. Here, you can move your smartphone around to see the 3D effect, to make sure it looks good. If it does look good, select "Next." If not, go back and select another image.

After hitting "Next," you'll be taken back to your post where you can continue to preview the 3D effect before posting. You can also hit the "X" on the photo to remove it if you changed your mind.

Whenever you or someone else posts a 3D photo, it will be labeled as a 3D Photo in the post. For example, it will say "Person's Name added a 3D photo" by the user's profile image. Also, when you scroll up and down through your feed, you will notice the picture moving in conjunction, giving its 3D status away.

Once you see one, tilt your device back and forth to see more depth around the portrait subject, whether it's a human, pet, or object. Tap on the image to expand it to fill the display.

Take Better 3D Photos for Facebook

You'll quickly notice that not all of your portraits will look good as 3D Photos on Facebook. To make sure yours look better, follow some of the below tips, which will also make better portrait photos in general.

  • Put your main subject at least three or four feet away from your phone.
  • Capture scenes with at least three layers of depth: foreground, your subject, and background.
  • Don't let your subject blend in with the background — use contrasting colors to make them stand out, and therefore pop in 3D.
  • Make sure the subject has some texture, as it won't pop as much without it.
  • Shoot subjects with solid edges, so there is a clear line of separation between other depth layers.
  • Avoid shiny objects, which could
  • Avoid transparent objects, such as glass or plastic, which could fool depth sensors.
  • Avoid added effects, like scene lighting . Portrait Lighting mode on iPhones may also work against you.
  • Avoid mono-style lighting that drowns out all of the colors that make 3D photos stand out.

I don't seem to have this option on my OnePlus 6

I was looking for an application which creates 3D like photos similar to what Facebook allows to post from iPhones (aka 3D Photo).

Checked tons of apps and it seems like only this one does the trick on Android

play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fb3d

Oh, almost forgot - you need to take a picture in Portrait mode and open/find it with/in the app. It even allows to share it. But doesn't allow to preview in Facebook Enjoy!

Facebook cover photo best practices

There is a right way and a wrong way to create your Facebook cover photo. Here are some best practices you can follow to ensure you’re setting yourself up for success.

Use a simple image with a clear focal point

Your cover photo shouldn’t be too busy or confusing. You don’t want it to detract from your page, so choose a simple image without a lot of noise.

A clear focal point just means a natural spot for the eye to draw to. In the example below, the focal point is the woman with the cucumber.

Follow Facebook’s cover photo guidelines

Following Facebook’s cover photo guidelines is always a good idea. Check their list periodically, as Facebook can change its guidelines occasionally.

Be sure to align your cover photo with Facebook’s business guidelines , too. You can’t infringe on copyright, for example.

Right-align objects

Right-aligning the elements or objects of your cover photo draws the viewer’s eye across your screen in a left-to-right direction. This directs your viewer towards your page’s call-to-action (CTA).

Vimeo

Source: Vimeo on Facebook

Left- or center-align text

People typically read from left to right. If you have any text on your Facebook cover photo, we recommend keeping it to the top left or center. Much like right-aligning your photo’s object, this draws the eye from left to right, ending on your CTA.

In the adidas example below, the text is center-aligned with a right-aligned focus of bright green. This naturally leads your eye down to the Shop on Website CTA.

Hootsuite, on the other hand, has left-aligned text that draws your eye to the focal point of the woman using binoculars. Then, you’re naturally inclined to look below at the Sign Up CTA.

Pair your Facebook cover photo with your profile picture

Optimize your cover photo for mobile

When you’re choosing an image for your Facebook cover photo, think about how it’s going to look on the screens of smartphone users. Mobile users account for approximately half of web traffic worldwide. You’ll want to think about how your image translates between devices.

Ask yourself:

Give your cover photo a link

Including a link within the cover photo’s caption is a great way to drive traffic. If you’re feeling clever, you could give your more curious viewers an easter egg here. Use your link to send them to a page with an exclusive product or a prize. As always for social links, use a link shortener to make your URL more manageable.

Use your cover photo for campaign promotion

Since it sits above the fold, your cover photo allows you to tell your audience what you want them to know right off the bat.

Are you hosting a giveaway? Or perhaps you have a fire sale coming up soon? Maybe you want to tell them about a new product line that’s about to launch. Whatever it may be, you can upload a piece of promotional material to your cover photo to get the word out.

Facebook has roughly 2.91 billion monthly active users , after all. That’s a lot of potential eyes on your promo materials.

Avoid a pixelated photo!

If you upload a massive file to your cover photo, Facebook will try to reduce your file size. This can cause your cover photo to become pixelated and look low-quality.

To avoid this, make sure you upload as small of a file size as possible. Facebook recommends 100kb or less .

Try testing your Facebook cover photos to see what resonates with your audience. Testing is one of the best ways to truly understand what visuals work best on social media.

A/B testing your cover photos helps you figure out which photo catches your viewer’s eye and gets them to follow you. Pay attention to any increase in followers or engagement with the photo. And then put resources into making more content like that. It’s a cycle of success.

Perhaps your audience will respond to a bright, minimalistic design like the one below:

Or maybe they appreciate a geometric collage with neutral color tones:

How To Create Facebook 3D Photo From a Regular Photo

how to make a 3d cover photo on facebook

A few weeks ago, Facebook rolled out 3D photos . If you want to use this feature, there are two options how to create and publish 3D Photo :

  • If you have iPhone with dual lens, you take a picture in the “Portrait” mode and then upload it to Facebook and be done with it.
  • You can create 3D photo manually in Photoshop. It is a lot of manual work, but it can be done, and the effect is very cool!

I will explain how to achieve this in the next few paragraphs!

How to create 3D photo without iPhone Portrait mode?

First and foremost I should say that you should be at a certain level of expertise in Photoshop. If you know how to work with Pen Tool, Gradient Tool, Quick Mask and Paths, it should be a relatively straightforward process for you. Besides, if you have ever used any web design software , the process won’t cause any difficulties. Most operations are standard. (Sponsored link)

Basically what we will be doing is manually creating a depth map which is something that dual lens phones create automatically in Portrait mode to determine what is background and foreground. This map is then used to blur the background to create the effect of a picture taken on a DSLR with portrait lens.

What Facebook is doing is they are using the same depth map, but this time not for a “DSLR effect” but to create an illusion of 3D photo.

Step 1. Pick a photo

Find the picture you want to create the 3D effect for. Ideally, it should be a vertical photo, let’s say 800×1000px.

What works best are photos where the objects are distinct and contrasting, and where at the same time the background isn’t too complicated – something uniform like a road, sky, beach or plain wall works great.

If the background displays complicated structures, it will be more noticeable that the 3D effect is only artificial.

Step 2. Start creating the depth map

What you need to know about depth maps before you get to it:

  • The depth map is made of shades of gray (and you can use gradients as well).
  • Prepare the depth map as a separate image with the same dimensions as the original.
  • dark shades = close,
  • light shades = away.

Now here comes the hard part. You have to manually separate all the objects that you want to stand out in the 3D photo.

Selecting them with the Pen Tool and saving the path of each object is probably the quickest way to do that.

After that, determine what in the photo is at what distance and start creating the depth map according to the examples in this article by taking each path and filling it with the corresponding shade of gray.

Objects in the foreground will be darker, objects in the background will be a lighter color. If something is getting gradually further away (ground, ceiling, walls and so on), you can create a gradient instead of a solid color .

You can also slightly blur the edges in the depth map as in the example bellow.

The cover picture and its depth map looks like this (see more examples at the end of the article):

The cover picture and its depth map looks like this

Step 3. Test run it

Once you have the depth map done, save both original and the map into separate files (jpg, or whatever).

To quickly see if everything looks like it should, you can test the 3D effect on depthy.me . First load the original image and then it will ask for the depth map.

If you are happy with the result, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 4. Creating the file that you can upload to facebook

If everything looked okay on the depthy.me, you can create the 3D photo itself.

For that you can use the iOS app Depth Cam . The process is the same as on the website above: first load the original image, and then load the depth map separately by tapping on the Import DepthMap .

Finally, in the bottom right corner tap the export icon and select Save Facebook 3D Photo . That will create new picture in your Portraits album (which is where iPhone stores pictures taken in the Portrait mode by default).

How to post 3D photo on Facebook?

Now this is finally the easy part:

  • Open the Facebook app
  • Tap the text area to post new status
  • Scroll down and select 3D Photo .
  • Select the photo you just exported from Depth Cam.

This feature is (at least for now) only available on phones that support Portrait mode – all dual lens iPhones and Androids, and some newer phones such as the iPhone Xr.

How to Create a Facebook Cover Photo Using Your Avatar

F acebook rolled out avatars back in 2020, but there wasn’t much to do with them. Now they can take pride-of-place in a customized cover photo.

Making one is easy enough, but if you don't have the Facebook app, you might not know any of it is possible at all.

How to Make a Facebook Avatar Cover Photo

You need a Facebook avatar to feature one in your cover photo, and you can only make a Facebook avatar if you have the Facebook app. So, if you want to follow along and don't have a Facebook avatar yet, downloading the app and making an avatar is the first place to start.

If you haven’t updated your avatar in a while, it’s probably time. All of the clothing options available for the VR avatars that Meta Introduced in 2021 are also available for your Facebook avatar, including outfits unlocked by buying VR games.

When Facebook users with a Facebook avatar navigate to their home page, they now see a Create with avatar button over the familiar Edit cover photo button in the lower right corner of their profile’s cover photo.

Selecting this button opens a randomly generated cover photo using your Facebook avatar.

You can select Set as cover photo and be on your way. However, scrolling down reveals options to create a custom cover photo with your Facebook avatar.

This setup probably looks familiar to you, as it’s arguably an under-powered clone of Snapchat’s Bitmoji avatar profile picture. Two tabs offer a selection of poses and backgrounds for your avatar.

You can edit your cover photo on the browser interface, but only the pose and background. If you want to edit the avatar or its clothing, you’ll have to use the Facebook app.

When you’re done, press Set as cover photo .

One More Thing to Do With a Facebook Avatar

Facebook avatars were already usable on the platform largely as custom emojis in messages and comments. These were fun features, but it's no wonder that some users don't even know that Facebook avatars are available.

As we spend more time online, avatars are becoming an increasingly important part of our digital identities. Creating more spaces to showcase those avatars, like the Facebook cover photo, is always an exciting development.
