Postboxes get knitted makeovers to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
11 May 2022, 16:41 | Updated: 11 May 2022, 16:42
By Alice Dear
Knitted figures of the Queen, her corgis and British Beefeaters have started appearing on the top of postboxes across the UK, and this is why.
Listen to this article
As the Queen 's Platinum Jubilee approaches, people across the United Kingdom are preparing to celebrate the historical milestone.
The main celebrations will take place over the June Bank Holiday , however, some people are already getting in the festive mood by decorating their local postboxes.
Knitted postbox toppers first started appearing across the UK during lockdown as a way to honour NHS staff and put a smile on people's faces.

Since then, the knitted creations have been used to honour special occasions such as Easter, Christmas and Remembrance Day.
Now, the Queen's Platinum Jubilee is featuring as the theme for the postbox toppers, and the ones we've seen so far are amazing.
Karen Wright shared a picture on Facebook of a local postbox topper in Desborough, Northamptonshire, featuring a purple crown and the inscription 'ER70' on it.
Another person shared a creation of white wool adorned with a knitted Queen and multiple corgi dogs, see it here:
An especially impressive knitted postbox topper was spotted in Wallington, South London, by Maddy Ruzzene who snapped a picture.
The topper is created using the colours of the United Kingdom flat and depicts the Queen standing next to two corgis, a Queen's Guard and a British Beefeater.
Another knitted topper has been spotted in Carn Brea, Cornwall, by Christopher Brough who came across the delightful creation during a lunchtime walk.
The piece depicts a crown created in purple and gold wool, complete with the letters 'ER' stitched onto it.
These knitted postbox toppers are not created by one particular person or company, and are instead made by talented knitters in the local community – in fact, you could have a go at making one for your local postbox!

Knitted postbox toppers in tribute to the Queen appear around the UK
Since the Queen passed away, yarn bombers have been creating sweet tributes to the late monarch
The Queen passed away on Thursday 8 September at Balmoral, Scotland, aged 96. Mourners paid their respects at royal residencies, including Windsor, Buckingham Palace, Sandringham and Balmoral, leaving floral tributes and cards. There is also a digital book of condolence available on the Royal family website . People queued for many hours to see Her Majesty lying-in-state at Westminster Hall ahead of the state funeral on Monday, 19 September.
Yarn bombers have also been paying tribute by creating knitted likenesses of the Queen, which have appeared across the country in tribute to the monarch.
Yarn bombing is a form of street art using knitting and crochet . Often used to adorn post boxes, woolly creations can also be found decorating railings, lampposts and bollards.
We have seen royal-themed yarn bombing before, including for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee , which marked her 70-year reign. Since the Queen passed away, knitted tributes to Her Majesty with touching details have been pictured.
A black post box topper with a knitted Queen wearing a grey outfit and carrying a handbag was spotted in the Scottish village of Ballater, Aberdeenshire, which the Queen's coffin travelled through on its journey from Balmoral to Edinburgh. The detailed post box topper also featured a knitted white flower and a Thank You note.
A postbox topper in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II was also spotted outside Windsor Castle.
And it wasn't just postboxes seen adorned with the tributes – on Sunday, a knitted doll representing the late Queen was also pictured attached to barriers lining the procession route, ahead of the funeral.
Pictures of knitted and crocheted postbox toppers in tribute to the Queen have been snapped elsewhere, too, with passersby sharing the dedications on social media.
Although easily removed, without permission, yarn bombing can be considered illegal. If you want to create your own yarn bomb tribute, it's best to seek permission first.

Royal Mail postboxes get knitted 'hats' in mystery makeover across London
Londoners want to get to the bottom of who has made these incredible 'hats'

If red postboxes didn't already look lovely enough on the streets of London, they certainly do now thanks to one mystery artist.
Royal Mail boxes have been snapped wearing woollen covers decorated in hand-knitted designs.
The creations have been snapped in areas spanning across London, from Eltham and Twickenham all the way to Ruislip .
But the identity of the artist creating these colourful 'hats' remains a mystery.
A picture of one of the designs on Gerda Road, in Eltham, showed a knitted nest with a mother and baby birds inside, surrounded by flowers and colourful letters to spell 'joy'.

Londoners rushed to share their love for the "beautiful", "amazing" and "simply fabulous" covers, but the details about who made them are still a bit woolly...
"Well done who ever you are," one comment said.
Ian Cuthbert, who shared the image on social media, believes it is a woman who has created the covers, but knows little other than that.
"I will look out for her, someone must know her," he added.
"It's lovely," Ian told MyLondon , "she's put a smile on a lot of people's faces when people are really down with this Covid-19 .
"Well done to the lady who is doing the postboxes, fantastic."
A postbox which was given one of the "hats" in Twickenham had a message to go with it.
It said: "In these difficult times I hope that my creation makes you smile and brightens your day".
It then linked to a huge social media group where people share 'Random Acts of Crochet Kindness' but did not reveal anymore about the mystery maker.
Fans of the Postbox covers are searching for the artist to find out if they can donate money to them for the cost of the wool.
Any many simply wanted to say thank you, "for putting a smile on everybody’s face" as one Londoner said.

KEEN crafters have been coming up with knitted creations across Dorset to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.
The main celebrations for the jubilee will take place between June 2 and 5, with some people getting in the festive mood by decorating their local postboxes.
One decoration spotted in Blandford Road, Upton, has been a hit with the locals.

Kate Osborne, deputy clerk at Lytchett Minster and Upton Town Council, said: "These wonderful royal themed post box toppers have certainly been given the stamp of approval by the community and are a popular addition to the town’s celebrations to mark this historical milestone for the Queen.
"They really strike a chord with residents and bring a smile to the faces of those walking past. A great deal of time and love goes into making these wonderful creations which capture the town’s community spirit."
Another local creation has been spotted of a knitted queen and her two corgi dogs.
