Editorial and administrative assistant.

The application period for Graywolf's Editorial and Administrative Assistant Position closed on Thursday February 15, 2024.

We hope to complete the hiring process by early to mid-March, and all applicants will be notified of that outcome via Submittable.

Citizen Literary Fellowship

Application period for 2023-2024 Citizen Literary Fellowship is now closed**

The Citizen Literary Fellowship is grounded in our belief that while diversity in the books and authors we publish is vital, it is equally important that the people publishing these books reflect that diversity. The fellowship is intended to attract candidates who otherwise would face barriers to beginning a career in publishing, and to therefore increase the diversity and inclusivity of the industry.

Throughout the year, the fellow will receive active coaching and encouragement from the whole Graywolf team. Our hope is that this fellowship will serve as a doorway to a successful career in publishing or a related literary field.

It is a part-time (24 hours per week), non-exempt, ten-month position extending from September 2023 through June 2024.

Opportunity Summary

The Citizen Literary Fellowship is a paid, comprehensive ten-month fellowship designed to support a person who is interested in learning more about the publishing industry through an introductory, hands-on experience. Through substantial project-based work in the editorial and marketing/publicity departments, the fellow will gain a broad base in publishing and be prepared to launch or further a career in the field. There are no requirements regarding the educational background of the candidate, but this position is not intended for those attending school full time.

This fellowship is grounded in our belief that while diversity in the books and authors we publish is vital, it is equally important that the people publishing these books reflect that diversity. As a result, the fellowship is intended to attract candidates who otherwise would not have access to publishing, and to therefore increase the diversity and inclusivity of the industry. Throughout the year, the fellow will receive active coaching and encouragement from the whole Graywolf team. Our hope is that this fellowship will serve as a doorway to a successful career in publishing or a related literary field.

This is a part-time (24 hours per week), non-exempt ten-month position. Compensation includes $25,000 (paid twice monthly as regular wages), paid time off, and health and dental insurance. Strong preference will be granted to applicants able to work within commuting distance of our Minneapolis office. Though we remain open to the possibility of a remote fellowship under special circumstances, an in-person presence offers significant benefits to both the fellow and their colleagues. Remote applicants must be based in New York or California, the states in which we already operate.

Key Responsibilities

The fellow will work closely with senior staff in both the editorial and the marketing/publicity departments as they follow new and forthcoming books through every stage of the publication cycle. In addition to attending virtual events and participating in remote meetings as a member of the staff, the fellow will also have an active role in Graywolf’s outreach efforts. When appropriate, we will tailor activities to align with a fellow’s particular interests and skills.

Key editorial responsibilities may include:

Reading and writing reports on manuscripts under consideration.

Working with our editors to provide feedback to authors on manuscripts that are in development.

Soliciting endorsements and drafting catalog copy for forthcoming books.

Reading print and online magazines to discover emerging writers.

Researching other publishers’ titles to find market comparisons for Graywolf books.

Attending literary events and reporting on new and interesting writers.

Key marketing responsibilities may include:

Researching and contacting new sales, media, and advertising outlets, including those that reach diverse communities.

Assisting with author events and tour publicity/promotion.

Assisting with the development of backlist marketing.

Assisting with creation, production, and distribution of seasonal Graywolf catalogs.

Assisting with the Graywolf website, as needed.

Preferred Attributes and Experience

We are looking for a motivated, creative, and enthusiastic candidate with the following attributes:

  • Strong interest in book publishing, contemporary literature, and the literary community.

A commitment to increasing diversity in and access to literature, and experience working with diverse and BIPOC communities.

Prior experience that will help the candidate participate in the publishing process. Relevant experience is not exclusive to publishing or academia.

Strong writing skills.

Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with a small staff.

Ability to take the initiative in proposing and identifying additional tasks and projects.

Tell us if you have any special—non-required—additional skills, such as design experience or familiarity with databases and/or web sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I am still in school (undergraduate or postgradutate)? Can I still apply for the fellowship?

The fellowship program is not intended for someone with a full-time student’s course load.

Is the ideal candidate for the fellowship early in their career, or just finishing school?

The fellowship is open to a candidate at any stage of their career, and there are no set expectations regarding previous experience or education level.

What are examples of the kinds of barriers mentioned in the position description?

These barriers could include any factors that could prevent access to the industry based on race, ethnicity, identity/orientation, socio-economic background, disability, education, and more. Without being prescriptive or prohibitive, the fellowship hopes to attract applicants who might have otherwise been overlooked by the publishing industry.

What does a fellow's typical day look like?

The fellow generally works three eight-hour shifts Tuesday–Thursday, and A typical day might include the following:

A meeting in which the Nonfiction Prize committee discusses possible finalist manuscripts from the pool of submissions

Publicity outreach to media contacts for an upcoming paperback release

Manuscript reading and reader reports

Coordinating design for a digital ad

Working with an editor on manuscript development

Researching emerging writers and publishing possibilities

How do mentoring relationships work for the fellow?

The fellow will work closely on projects and career development with two Graywolf staffers, one in marketing and one in editorial. But the fellow will have the chance to work with and learn from all staff members through informational interviews, all staff meetings, select projects, and informal conversations.

If I'm only interested in marketing, can I apply to be a fellow in that department?

Initially the fellow’s workload will be distributed evenly across marketing and editorial departments, but there is always room to follow the fellow’s specific interests, and particularly in the second half of the fellowship there is the opportunity to refine the program’s focus in either the marketing or editorial departments.

Does the fellowship help with career development and industry contacts?

Yes, there is an emphasis on exploring potential career paths and making connections in the industry, largely following the fellow’s lead depending on goals and interests.

After completing the fellowship, will there be a spot to work full-time at Graywolf?

Positions at Graywolf come up only very intermittently, there is no guarantee or expectation that the fellow will transition into a permanent position after their program ends.

Will I receive a critique of my application/cover letter?

Unfortunately, the volume of applications doesn’t allow for personal responses to all candidates.

Will I hear back if not selected for an interview, and if so, when?

We will be moving through the application process as quickly as possible. Our hope is that we will make a final decision around mid June 2023. All applicants will be notified once the position is filled

For any questions not answered above,  please email [email protected] with the subject line “Fellowship Position 2023.”

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

n+1 is seeking a full-time Managing Editor to work in our Brooklyn office starting February 1. Compensation is $56,000 and includes health and dental insurance.

Please note that this is not a remote position.

n+1 ( www.nplusonemag.com ) is a print magazine of literature, culture, and politics published three times a year. Founded in 2004 with a mission to revive the tradition of little magazines, it has since published more than forty issues, launched two book imprints, maintained an online companion to the print magazine, and hosted programs and events across New York City. It has been called “a lively, stimulating magazine of rare intellectual scope” and is recognized as one of the most influential literary publications in the US.

We’re looking for a managing editor who is passionate about n+1’s mission, keyed into its sensibility, and invested in building the editorial future of the magazine. n+1 and all its programs are run by the n+1 Foundation, a 501c3 not-for-profit.

The Managing Editor will: 1. Oversee and execute the production of three print issues of n+1 a year:

  • Set the editorial calendar and hold others to deadlines
  • Coordinate between several parties—editors, authors, copyeditors, et al—to ensure the timely publication of the print issue
  • Supervise n+1 interns’ fact-checking and proofreading
  • Move drafts through stages of production
  • Typeset articles in InDesign

2. Be an active member of n+1’s editorial team:

  • Read submissions and respond to pitches
  • Edit at the conceptual and line level
  • Assign and commission pieces
  • Participate in editorial meetings and discussions

3. Provide support in the n+1 office:

  • Participate in planning and executing magazine events, discussions, parties, and fundraisers
  • Participate in hiring n+1 interns
  • Help with ad hoc administrative tasks and all around pitching-in

Applicants should have:

  • Minimum three years of magazine, book publishing, and/or newspaper experience
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign
  • Fluency in Google Drive and Google Sheets
  • Copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Excellent written communication
  • A natural tendency toward organization
  • A knack for collaborative / group work
  • Some management experience
  • A demonstrated ability to take pieces from pitch stage all the way to publication
  • An affinity for n+1 and its projects

Familiarity with Photoshop, WordPress, and HTML are strongly preferred.

n+1 is committed to a diverse workplace and is an equal-opportunity employer. We will not discriminate against any employee or applicant on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
