DIVERSIFICATION OF CHURCH GROWTH TEACHING
In 1982 Wagner invited John Wimber to teach the course MC510: Signs, Wonders and Church Growth at Fuller’s School of World Mission. As a result of Wimber’s influence Wagner’s views on the work of the Holy Spirit, like spiritual gifts, began to shift. His shift moved even further in the following years through the influence of people like Cindy Jacobs and Chuck Pierce. While Wagner was still focussed on church growth, he was, however, looking at other factors of church growth that were not under the classical Church Growth radar like spiritual gifts, prayer and spiritual warfare. In the revised third edition of Understanding Church Growth (1990) (done with the consent of McGavran) Wagner added a whole new chapter on “Divine Healing and Church Growth”. 1 In Church Growth State of the Art (1986) there was a whole section consisting of four chapters on “Church Growth and the Holy Spirit”. 2 One chapter was on the supernatural anointing of the Holy Spirit for ministry and another was on the importance of power encounter for church growth. The latter chapter being a contribution by John Wimber.
Many books published during this time were about principles and strategies for numerical church growth. They were mostly written from the perspective of the church as an organisation (albeit a biblical, living, spiritual organism).
The following is a sampling of such publications. Carl F. George’s How to Break Growth Barriers (1993). 6 The basic thesis of his book is that if a pastor is to lead his church to growth he needs to move from being a shepherd to that of a rancher. In other words, instead of being the primary caregiver the pastor needs to develop others to care for the members of church and do the work of ministry. Gary L. McIntosh’s One Size Doesn’t Fit All (1999). 7 He says that the size of a church determines how it “does church” including how it is structured, the role of the pastor, how decisions are made, and the strategies it deploys to overcome obstacles and grow the church.
From a more business approach George Barna wrote a highly controversial book called Marketing the Church . 8 It was about using the marketing tools of the business world to reach out and to win a church’s target group. McIntosh comments, “This marketing emphasis effectively turned many people away from the popular notion of church growth, and caused a reaction toward a new paradigm of church health in the mid 1990s.” 9
Then there were the books that proposed models of what churches ought to be and do so that they may grow and fulfil the Great Commission mandate. Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Church (1995) 10 was one of the first books that provided a balanced approach (The 5-Purposes) to grow a church. It detailed a process (The Life Development Process) depicted by the baseball diamond and a plan to move people from Community to Core. It also incorporated the HUP (although he does not attribute to it) by describing Saddleback’s target group, aka Saddleback Sam and Samantha.
As I draw the review of church growth literature to a conclusion, I return to the three questions I posed at the beginning of the article. First, is church growth teaching to be defined by and limited to McGavran’s and Wagner’s views during the classical Church Growth period? Advocates of CGM are adamant that church growth teaching must employ “as its initial frame of reference the foundational work done by Donald McGavran and his colleagues.” 13 While I concur with this, I believe it would be limiting the usefulness of Church Growth teaching if it did not allow for additional structures to be built on that foundation. A case in point would be Wagner’s “discoveries” in the healing-prayer-spiritual warfare factor of church growth. 14 He was disappointed that McGavran and others did not see that it was very much a part of and concerned the Church Growth field and agenda. Church health teaching falls in the same vein (I will pick up this thread again when I answer the third and final question).
- Quantitative and Qualitative Growth. Churches commissioned by Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20 must grow both numerically and in spiritual maturity.
- Research and Analysis. Research must be done to learn (a) about the people the church is attempting to reach with the Gospel, (b) the best means to reach this specific group of people, and (c) the hindrances to the growth of the church, and
- Strategic Planning. Determine the best strategies to be deployed based on the research and analysis to accomplish the purpose of the church with the use of planning and programming. 15
However, to say that the above three principles of church growth are foundational does not mean that they are exhaustive. Upon these foundational principles of church growth I believe there should be an openness to allow for other well-tested tenets of church growth to be added to them. These would include the contributions of specific subjects such as church leadership, spiritual gifts and ministry strategies as they are applied in the church growth context.
Finally, what influence did church growth teaching have on the later development of church health teaching? Church health teaching came about as a response to church growth teaching, whether as a correction in relation to some of the misgivings of the latter or as a development of the latter. The bottom line is that we cannot separate the two. Church health is a necessary factor for church growth. The growth of a church, both in quantitative and qualitative terms, is dependent on the health of the church. I will look further into this as I review church health literature in a subsequent article.

AN ANALYSIS OF YOUTH LIFESTYLE A CASE STUDY OF SOME CHRISTAIN YOUTHS IN YOBE STATE NIGERIA
This research is very significant because youths are the future of every organization especially the Church. Many, if not all church denominations in Nigeria have been affected by the change in the lifestyles of their youths. The researcher aims at digging the root cause, the effect and the appropriate way of solving the worldly lifestyles affecting our youth so that organizations, parents and youth will benefit from the research findings.

The paper examines the formation of youth Christian communities in the light of John Paul II's Apostolic Exhortation, Christifideles laici (61). The document calls for the adequate formation of the people of God in specific, the laity or non-ordained in the missionary evangelization of the Church, that is, the life and mission of the Church and society. Of this group is the youth, a significant portion of the people of God. The paper aims to suggest a model of the basic Christian community known in Ibadan as Renew Process in the solid formation of the youth as a new way of being Church, both for the spiritual growth of the youth themselves as well as the network of communities in which the live. The Pastoral Spiral Circle theological method of analysis was used. Findings reveal the pivotal role of the priest in the revival of this new way of being Church, noting that if the zeal of the priest turns to apathy, little can be achieved. Another finding shows that the laity are ever ready to assist the clergy in a collaborative way in carrying out this mission. In all of this, the absence of Youth section of the Renew Process as Basic Christian Community. Results show that the work of evangelization is a collaborative effort in a co-responsible way. There is the need to form youth members of the renew process as BCC. One element of Christian formation is financial resource, which requires a rethink. The paper ends by calling for a renewed appreciation of the youth as an indelible invaluable group in carrying out missionary evangelization. In so doing, they need to be empowered spiritually with the skills necessary to not only cooperate but also become active agents of spiritual transformation of their peers and their society.

Adolescence remains a fascinating period of transition in the life cycle of humans; it provides for a period of expanded growth just after childhood. During adolescence, young people are opened to the possibility of identity formation, self-discovery, spiritual growth and emerging independence from adults. As young people mature from childhood to adulthood, they experience remarkable physical, behavioural, social and spiritual transformation. The spiritual development of adolescents usually occurs not separate from, but as part of the transformational process. Therefore, adolescence, as a critical period in the journey of life, brings forth an opportunity for timely intervention to prevent destructive life patterns, and to promote continuing healthy habits and spiritual values. Whether or not the adolescent emerges into adulthood as a healthy, self-reliant individual will depend on the opportunities available to develop positive attitudes and life skills during the formative years. ...
The paper examines need to acknowledge and promote the participation of young people more at the community level of the parish in light of Africae Munus 63 which describes youth as gifts that their local community can benefit from. It aims to seek that youth can be involved; can be heard; can really and fully participate more than ever before, in view of an effective and efficient youth ministry today in order to achieve the goal of evangelisation. The pastoral spiral circle method is used in this work. One of the findings revealed that there is need to identify the different sub-groups within the larger youth grouping. One of the results is the fact that when the charism and talents of youth are identified and given a voice, youth will seek to ennoble the life and activities of the parish and contribute their invaluable and indispensable quota to the development of both peers and personal lives. It concludes while affirming that youth ministry is about ministry to youth, by youth, and for youth, who possess the God-given gifts--faith, vitality, energy, passion, and enthusiasm necessary and required for building up the community.

This study was conducted to examine the movement of adolescents from one church to another in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria with a focus on Baptist church. An attempt was made to determine reasons for the purported movement, by investigating the peculiarities of various Baptist churches within the Chosen Generation Baptist Association. The study employed a sample of 200 respondents. Questionnaires were administered to these individuals, to obtain answers researchquestions guiding the research. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics; simple percentiles based on the frequency of occurrence of the responses to each item of the research instrument. Results revealed that, Baptist adolescents are moving in a significant dimension to other churches, especially non-Baptist churches; Baptist adolescent movement is largely due to their dissatisfaction with the style of worship at their local churches; their parents, teachers or pastors lack of creative and innovative skills in making the things they teach, relevant to their current realities; to mention a few. Recommendations were made on the basis of the findings.

This study was on commitment of youth to weekly church activities; a case study of ECWA churches in Lagos. It was aimed at determining the level of participation of youth and factors that contribute to lack of youth commitment to weekly church activities, that is, the effect of youth commitment to weekly church activities. both primary (field) and secondary (Library) data were used to arrive at conclusion that among the factors that contribute to lack of youth commitment to weekly activities is their personal faith, or personal conviction. Increasing involvement of Nigerian youths in cybercrime and fraud, ritual activities, prostitution, human and drug trafficking, kidnapping, robbery and hired killings reveal the growing materialism of a significant number of Nigerian youths, including uncountable numbers of professed Nigerian Christian youths. There is the need to address materialism amongst Nigerian youths with special reference to Nigerian Christian youths. Paul’s moral instructions to Timothy are still relevant for Nigerian Christian youths to emulate. Therefore, this study employs a redaction critical method of biblical exegesis to interpret and apply 1 Timothy 6:6–14 to the problem of materialism amongst Nigerian Christian youths. This study finds that materialism amongst Nigerian Christian youths is consolidating negative implications to their spiritual lives, families, to the mission mandate of the church and to Nigeria as a nation. This study argues that Paul has shown a model of how a Christian youth ought ...

Lived religion is a reflection on the influence of religion on how people live their daily lives in the community, school, society, and other religious and social institutions. This paper investigates the practice of lived religion within the Nigeria youth ministry. Praxis entails what people do daily, oriented and guided by action, and not just theoretical knowledge or the dogma of a religious tradition or rituals. In investigating the youth ministry praxis in Africa (with a focus on the Nigerian context), this paper engages with Gregg and Scholefield, and Osmer's pragmatic theological task, because the framework is action guided, thus investigates what youth ministry is actually doing among African youth.

The phenomenon of unemployment is one of the problems that affect Nigeria like other Third World countries. Youth unemployment in particular is a threat to the socioeconomic wellbeing of any nation. This is made worse by the fact that, majority of the youths in Nigeria are unemployed even those that graduated from higher institutions of learning cannot find any meaningful jobs for their survival. The study which is analytic in nature tries to examine the role the Church as a social institution can play in the fight against youth unemployment in Nigeria. The study found that, the Church as a social institution can play a role in fighting unemployment by providing youths with opportunity to acquire skills for them to be self-reliant. It therefore recommends that, the Church should work in line with the government in fighting unemployment in Nigeria.

There are millions of youths in this generation who feel they are alone and secluded from relationships. They sense that they exist without a purpose. They feel misplaced, misled, and misunderstood. They do not know who they are and where they fit into society. Even some Christian Youths feel, think, and believe that they are not part of society and therefore disengage and separate from their parents, brothers and sisters, family, church community, and from their pastors or church leaders. A Christian Youth is someone between God and his community. God made you a youth of this generation to accomplish a purpose; therefore, you have a divine destiny. This book is for all Christians to know his or her important place in this evil world. Although, this world is polluted with atrocities, violence, and all forms of immorality, yet a Christian has a place in it and we must know our position in order to fulfill the purpose of being created in the image of God of being called out of this world.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
- Background of the study
Church Growth is a movement within evangelical Christianity which focuses on developing methods to grow churches based on business marketing strategies. It cannot be disputed that youths play a vital role in the life of a Church as they are the leaders of tomorrow and future of the church. The elderly stands out but youth’s contributions have been shinning and have always been flagbearers of every Church. For any tangible growth to take place in any Christiancommunity, the youth must be significant in that process of growth. This is the more reason whywise nations, countries, groups and organization focus more on the development of youths so that thefuture of such investments would never be improvised or blind. It is therefore of vital importance in the Catholic Church to prepare assiduously youths for the tasks they would naturally face inthe coming future. It is only when we have nourished our youths that they in-turn develop theChurch. The questions are “what amount of attention do we give the youths and what levelof devotion does the youths give to the church.
The youths of today have very high ideals, and to deny this would be grossly unfair. But we mustadmit that very often these ideals can sour, can be perverted and can be exploited. Often youngpeople ultimately relinquish their ideals if they suspect that the situation is hopeless; if theyconclude that nowhere can these ideals be fulfilled. Unfortunately, this is the usual progressionof events today. Disappointments lead to abysmal falls, often to depths lower than those theycondemned when their idealism was fresh. Where this does not happen, ideals are exploited byfalse prophets of good. The sectarians far from the fullness of truth are able to inspireyouth to make such amazing sacrifices Yet at the same time, the Orthodox Church, possessing the fullness of Truth, has a real difficulty in keeping her youth(Abednego: 1989). It could be that in ignoring the high ideals and potential moral heroism of our youth we have failed to familiarize them with our examples of such heroism, displayed by our own young, even the very young, who loved Christ and His Church in past ages. The youths are important fabrics in the society. Can there be any society without youth?Obviously no, that is why we must see to it that our youths find their rightful places in the church.
Church growth begins with church health and not the other way around. We see in nature that healthy things grow. This is by no means a new concept, but it’s still true. From this research, we will discover what a healthy church is like and how youth life style can boost church growth.
- Statement of the problem
One key problem is the inability to examine youth lifestyle and it’s impact on Church growth. Another problem is how best to measure numerical growth. A variety of indicators for attendance and occasional offices are available, but all are affected to some degree by measurement error and random fluctuations. Such variability poses particular problems with small churches, where the addition or subtraction of just a few people produces large proportional changes in the totals.
- Objectives of the study
- To examine youth lifestyle and its impact on Church growth.
- To change the unhealthy culture of some church youth ministries.
- To cast a fresh vision for the church.
1.4 Research questions
- What amount of attention do we give the youths?
- What level of devotion do the youths give to the church?
1.5 Research hypotheses
Ho : There is no significant relationship between youth lifestyle and it’s impact on Church growth.
Hi : There is a significant relationship between youth lifestyle and it’s impact on Church growth.
1.6 Significance of the study
This research work will assist churches, ministries, pastors, etc in discovering the vital roles youths play in the life of a Church as they are the leaders of tomorrow and future of every church. From this research, we will discover what a healthy church is like and how youth life style can boost church growth.
1.7 Scope/Limitations of the study
This study is on youth lifestyle and church growth.
Limitations of study
- Financial constraint – Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Time constraint – The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
1.8 Definition of terms

Chapter One Of Youth Life Style and Church Growth
Introduction.
Background of the study
The sectarians far from the fullness of truth are able to inspireyouth to make such amazing sacrifices Yet at the same time, the Orthodox Church, possessingthe fullness of Truth, has a real difficulty in keeping her youth(Abednego: 1989). It could be that in ignoring the high ideals and potential moral heroism of our youth we have failed to familiarizethem with our examples of such heroism, displayed by our own young, even the very young, who loved Christ and His Church in past ages.
Statement of the problem
One key problem is the inability to examine youth life style and church growth.Another problem is how best to measure numerical growth. A variety of indicators for attendance and occasional offices are available, but all are affected to some degree by measurement error and random fluctuations. Such variability poses particular problems with small churches, where the addition or subtraction of just a few people produces large proportional changes in the totals.
Objectives of the study
- To examine youth life style and church growth.
- To change the unhealthy culture of some church youth ministries.
- To cast a fresh vision for the church.
Research questions
1. What amount of attention do we give the youths?
2. What level of devotion do the youths give to the church?

Keywords: YOUTH LIFESTYLE AND ITS IMPACT ON CHURCH GROWTH
This study attempts to investigative the relationship between the youth and church growth in some selected denominations in Nigeria. It is important to invest in today’s youth if the body of Christ must be groomed for posterity. Teaching young people in the church to grow in their relationship with the Lord prepares them to serve Christ in all they do. As a result, this nurtures the congregation and allows the church to grow in all ramifications. Five research questions were raised by the research. Four null and alternate hypotheses were formulated to be tested at 0.05 level of significance. The research design deemed fit for this study was simple percentage, a sample size of hundred and thirty three 133 respondents were randomly selected from a population of 200 Christians. The findings here revealed that young people often feel reluctant to share their ideas because they feel it would be irrelevant to the leaders that rely solely on their experiences in the religion. Some recommendations were suggested to help harness the role of youth in today’s church towards growth and development of the church.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth is the time of life when one is young, and often means the time between childhood and adulthood (maturity). It is also defined as “the appearance, freshness, vigor, spirit. The above definition showcases the characteristic of one who is young”. Biblically, God often used young people to do great things. For example in the cases of David, Joshua, Joseph, Daniel and many other youths as recorded in the Old Testaments. In the New Testaments, God used a youth name “Timothy” to pastor and lead the Ephesian church when he was a teenager. According to (1Timothy 4:12 says), “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” In addition, there is much to be learned from the faith of a child. Matthew 18:2-4 says, “He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’” Because of God’s heart for young people, it is important to recognize youth’s value in today’s church.
When talking of church growth there are some factors to be considered, among such factors is the leaders’ relationship with the youths which forms the next generation church. It cannot be over emphasized that youths play a vital role in the life of a Church as they are the leaders of tomorrow and future of the church (Day & Kurtz, 2017). The elderly stands out but youth’s contributions have been shinning and have always been flag bearers of every Church. For any tangible growth to take place in any Christian community, the youth must be significant in that process of growth. This is the more reason why wise nations, countries, groups and organization focus more on the development of youths so that the future of such investments would never be improvised or blind. It is therefore of vital importance in today’s Church to prepare assiduously youths for the tasks they would naturally face in the coming future. It is only when we have nourished our youths that they in-turn develop the Church.
To foster rapid proliferation of church growth the church must incorporate contemporary stratagems to the youth ministry in establishing the growth of youths. The elders have a role to be flexible and adjust to the ever changing needs of youths through updating and matching the youth energy and vitality while avoiding old models. The youth must therefore in the long-run not to dilute the gospel message but discover how to live out the good news and encourage others to do so (Nielson, 2016).
The Church Growth Movement started with a passion for the Great Commission, and seeing people come to Christ. The vision of Christ towards church growth was not just to see the world drafted to the church but to see them saved and remained in the faith (Luke 14: 23). The creature of God lie waste around the world, engulfed in sins and wicked acts which need immediate intervention from the Church of God (John 4: 35-36). To religiously execute this great task called the “Great Commission of the Church” the church earnestly needs active involvement of the youths. The church is a community composed of members from diverse backgrounds who enjoin to share the work of God. The youth must therefore be involved actively in drawing the congregation both old and young to participate responsibly in the work, life and mission of the church and the community (Nielson, 2016). When the youth are drawn to the community it becomes easier for them to comprehend what it is to live in the Christian community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The major challenge in today’s church is the inability to examine the role of youth and church growth. Another problem is how best to measure their level of repentance coupled with all the evil occurence in the world today. A variety of indicators for attendance and occasional offices are available, but all are affected to some degree by measurement error and random fluctuations. Such variability poses particular problems with small churches, where the addition or subtraction of just a few people produces large proportional changes in the totals. Today, a great percentage of our Christian youths are living a life of disobedience to the Word of God, they are copying the patterns of this world with dexterity. Today, the lifestyle of the youth is such that it is very difficult to have a distinction between Christian youths and of those who are not Christians. How can we change the perspective of our youth who are easily lured and enticed by worldly lifestyle? This research became pertinent because it aims at making an analysis of the contributions youths to church growth. Most organizations especially in church set up always want their youths to live a care-free lifestyle (character trait of Jesus), the absence of this brings a very big problem between the youths and the leadership of the church. In some instances, the youths are removed from position of leadership or placed on church discipline. This indicates that Christian organizations are after godly lifestyles that will lead to church growth.
1.3 Purpose of the study
The primary purpose of this research is to critically examine youth and church growth. The specific objectives are;
- To cast a fresh vision for the youths that will foster church growth.
- To look into some unhealthy culture of today’s church youths with respect to church growth and development.
- To examine the significant role the youth plays in the growth and development of the 21 st century church
- To proffer solutions to some challenges facing youths in church leadership today.
1.4 Research Questions
The dimension which the study will follow will be based on these questions, which will help in creating an insight into the problem under investigation.
- Does the youth play any significant role in the growth and development of the church?
- Is there any significant relationship between the youth and church growth?
- Do the youth contribute to the growth and sustenance of the church?
- What are the roots causes of the moral degradation and eroding of our Christian values among Christian youths?
- What are the effects of the influence on the youth and the society?
1.5 Research hypotheses
The following hypotheses were formulated for testing at 0.05 level of significance.
H 0 : the youth plays no significant role in the growth and development of the church.
H 1 : the youth plays a significant role in the growth and development of the church.
H 0 : there is no significant relationship between the youth and church growth
H 2 : there is a significant relationship between the youth and church growth
1.6 Significance of the study
The findings of this study will assist churches, ministries, pastors, etc in discovering the vital roles youths play in the life of a Church as they are the leaders of tomorrow and future of every church. From this research, we will discover what a healthy church is like and how youths can boost church growth. The study is very significant because youths are the future of every organization especially the Church. Many, if not all church denominations in Nigeria have been affected by the change in the lifestyles of their youths. The researcher aims at digging the root cause, the effect and the appropriate way of solving the worldly lifestyles affecting our youth so that organizations, parents and youth will benefit from the research findings.
1.7 Scope/Limitations of the study
The study on youth and church growth seems broad such that it cannot be exhausted in this research work. For this reason, the research shall focus on what the Bible teaches about Christian youth and godly lifestyles, the root causes of moral degradation and eroding of our Christian values among Christian Youths, its effect on the youth and society, and how they can boost church growth. On the other hand, this research shall focus on some selected churches in Nigeria only because of security challenges, time, and budgetary constraints. The researcher shall sample the opinion of some selected Christian youths from different churches in Nigeria through a questionnaire. There were some constraints which tend to hinder the flow of the study, these include;
Members Reluctance: In most cases the members of the selected churches often feels reluctance over providing required information required by the researcher. This result in finding information where the structured questionnaires could not point out.
Inadequate Materials: Scarcity of material is also a major hindrance. The researcher finds it difficult to lay hands on several required material which could contribute immensely to the success of this research work.
Financial constraint – Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
1.8 Operational Definition of terms
