  • What Is Precision Manufacturing?

259651463

Our guide to precision manufacturing will take you through what it is, how it works, and why it matters in any industry that strives to elevate quality, work quickly, and cut costs.

Precision Manufacturing Explained

Precision manufacturing involves creating  highly accurate and workable components  from designs. It requires using tools  like computer numerical control  machines to remove areas from a piece of material until you have made a complete shape.

Accuracy is becoming more critical as parts become smaller. Precision engineering focuses on component design, while precision manufacturing is about the creation. CNC machines can cut pieces to precise specifications, small and accurate parts with tight tolerances — or little room for error.

Precision manufacturing has significant benefits in a world where users need accurate, high-quality products quickly and on budget. Manufacturers have evolved their processes over the years, and the addition of innovative technology that integrates machines with advanced computer programming allows them to respond rapidly to the evolving market.

The Core Principles of Precision Manufacturing

Precision manufacturing arose from the need to create components that work effectively and withstand the rigors of everyday life. The most notable difference between typical manufacturing and precision manufacturing is that the latter focuses on high tolerances. It produces components with greater accuracy, fewer defects, and high repeatability — the ability to perform repetitive tasks without deviation.

In addition, precision manufacturing applies lean principles, implementing efficiency, and waste management throughout the manufacturing process. Producing precision parts results in excess material, as the process requires removing pieces until only the final product remains. CNC machines reduce human error and, therefore, unnecessary waste. Precision manufacturers are always looking for ways to decrease scrap further, allowing the customer to benefit from cost savings on bulk orders.

Continuous improvement is another core principle of precision manufacturing, and constant technology advancements regularly enhance the process. Many precision manufacturers adopt a culture of continual improvement and commit to looking for methods to make the process faster, cheaper and more reliable.

Methods of Precision Machining

Precision machining is a high-velocity process used in precision manufacturing. It relies on machine tools controlled by computer software for producing components.

CNC machining starts with engineers or designers who use computer-aided design software. They translate their designs onto a computer-aided manufacturing file, instructing the CNC machines about the tools and processes. CNC machining is a broad term that can include milling, drilling, boring, tapping and turning.

Depending on the application and requirements, several precision machining methods are available.

  • CNC milling: Rotary cutters remove material from a workpiece in this subtractive process. Users can change the tool, direction, pressure, cutting speed, and angle to create different components.
  • Multi-axis CNC machining: Many CNC machining tools have multi-axis capabilities, which means they can perform several processes simultaneously. This innovation saves time in machine setup and component creation.
  • Swiss machining: This type of CNC machine creates parts by bringing stock to the tool, while typical CNC machines do it the opposite way. They are highly accurate and often run unattended for prolonged periods, reducing labor costs.
  • CNC turning: In this method, the workpiece rotates on a central axis, while a single-point cutting tool moves linearly to remove material.
  • Precision grinding: Precision grinders perform one of the final steps in the manufacturing process. Abrasive grinders create a flat surface on components with a smooth finish and produce close-tolerance finishes by removing any excess material.
  • Electrical discharge machining: This precision machining method uses sparks to shape metals. It brings the tool and the workpiece close together to create an electrical arc. This process raises the electrode’s temperature and melts the metal. Often, EDM is an ideal choice for hard metals, which can be challenging to shape with other CNC machines.
  • CNC laser machining: As the name suggests, this method uses a high-frequency laser beam to engrave or slice workpieces. While EDM only works on metal components that conduct electricity, laser machining is suitable for metals and non-metals.

Precision Manufacturing Industries and Applications

Precision manufacturing is essential for many industries and applications due to its tight tolerances, repeatability, and capacity. It has many applications in tooling and creating finished products, but some of the most common include the following.

  • Prototyping: Many industries require accurate reproductions of a design. Precision manufacturing is ideal for creating detailed and precise prototypes of many designs.
  • Automotive: Automotive applications require intricate components for engines, chassis, and more. Precision manufacturing makes many of these parts.
  • Medical: Technology has changed the face of the medical industry, and advanced machines can even perform surgeries. Medical components require micro-level detail, made possible by precision manufacturing.
  • Aerospace: Aerospace applications need the most advanced and reliable equipment and machining tools, suitable for rugged and durable materials. Precision manufacturing can create the quality of components required for aerospace performance and safety.
  • Defense: Similar to the aerospace industry, defense requires components that maintain reliability in even the most challenging conditions. Precision manufacturing has applications across the defense industry, from developing prototypes to full-scale pieces.
  • Electronics: Precision manufacturing enables the miniaturization of complex electrical components used in many consumer electronics applications, such as computers and cell phones.

The Future of Precision Manufacturing

Precision manufacturing continues to aim to enhance the accuracy, quality, speed, and cost of creating intricate parts. Technology has already changed the face of manufacturing, and we can look forward to more exciting innovations in the future. The Industrial Internet of Things could result in real-time monitoring of operating conditions by embedding sensors. Adding multiple axes to CNC machines will make them more flexible, increase accuracy, and boost manufacturing speeds.

In addition, sustainability continues to be a primary concern across industries due to the consumer demand for renewable resources and carbon footprint reductions. Precision manufacturing processes must evolve to reduce carbon emissions and leverage renewable sources to align with this global need.

In short, the future is bright for precision manufacturing. It has always been a flexible and innovative process, and this trend is likely to continue.

DXP Enterprises to Buy Precision Industries for $106M

  • August 19, 2007
  • Type Premium

DXP Enterprises, Inc., Houston, TX, will acquire Precision Industries, Inc., Omaha, NE, for approximately $106 million. The deal nearly doubles the size of DXP. &nbsp ; Precision has annualized 2007 sales of approximately $250 million. &nbsp ; DXP’s sales in 2006 were $279.8 million. Its sales this year will approach $340 million, based on first-half results. &nbsp ; Precision is a family-owned national industrial distributor with&nbsp ; about 45%&nbsp ; of its business in integrated supply, according to Precision’s spokesperson. It has 160 locations. Precision has made at least five acquisitions since 2001, according to its Web site, and has greatly expanded its network nationwide in the past five years. &nbsp ; Precision sells abrasives & cutting tools, bearings, power transmission, electrical products, fasteners, fluid power, hand & power tools, janitorial products, linear products, lubrication, material handling, pipes, valves & fittings, rubber products and safety products. &nbsp ; DXP Enterprises is a distributor of pumps, bearings, power transmission, seals, hose, safety, fluid power, and electrical and industrial supplies. DXP distributes its products from 38 service centers, 17 SmartSource (integrated supply) locations and two distribution centers, primarily in the southwestern rocky mountain, mid-western and southeastern regions of the U.S. &nbsp ; DXP has been busy in the acquisition arena lately, with several smaller buys of industrial and safety supply distributors. Year-to-date, the distributor’s sales are up 28% to $169 million. Sales by businesses acquired in 2006 and 2007 accounted for $23.5 million of the $36.7 million increase from the prior-year period. &nbsp ; Organic growth was 10%. &nbsp ; DXP has seen broad-based growth in its MRO segment (which accounts for a majority of the distributor’s sales) in recent years, according to its 2006 annual report, with organic growth in that segment up 45% in 2006 from the prior year. The distributor attributed the growth to an increase in sales to the oil and gas industry, as well as the mining, electrical generation and petrochemical processing industries. The sales increase was also attributed to an improved economy and high energy prices.” &nbsp ; In its 2006 annual report, DXP gave insight into how it views the competitive landscape in industrial MRO: “In the MRO segment we compete with a variety of industrial supply distributors, many of which may have greater financial and other resources than we do. Many of our competitors are small enterprises selling to customers in a limited geographic area. &nbsp ; “We also compete with larger distributors that provide integrated supply programs and outsourcing services similar to those offered through our SmartSource program, some of which might be able to supply their products in a more efficient and cost-effective manner than we can provide. &nbsp ; “We also compete with direct mail distributors, large warehouse stores and, to a lesser extent, manufacturers. While many of our competitors offer traditional distribution of some of the product groupings that we offer, we are not aware of any major competitor that offers on a nondirect mail basis a product grouping as broad as our offering. &nbsp ; “Further, while certain direct-mail distributors provide product offerings as broad as ours, these competitors do not offer the product application, technical design and after-the-sale services that we provide.”

St. Petersburg City Council picks chairperson, vice chair for 2024

  • Colleen Wright Times staff

ST. PETERSBURG — Picking a chairperson for 2024 was easy. It was the selection of a vice chairperson that took some time at a meeting Thursday.

Vice chairperson Deborah Figgs-Sanders was the only member nominated and automatically selected to run the dais next year. It’s customary for the vice chairperson to assume the role of chairperson, and the council usually tries to give every member a turn at the head spot.

But it took five votes to select a vice chairperson, and that drew some lines in the sand, especially as the council will ultimately vote on the sweeping Tropicana Field redevelopment plan next spring. The job ultimately went to council member Copley Gerdes.

Figgs-Sanders nominated Gerdes for vice chairperson. Council member Gina Driscoll nominated Lisset Hanewicz, and council member Richie Floyd nominated himself.

Gerdes said he wouldn’t go into why he should or should not be considered, but said he was humbled to be nominated and certainly is willing to serve with and for his colleagues. Hanewicz said she’s shown leadership in demanding transparency on the Tampa Bay Rays stadium deal. She said pushing the issue with administration is why council members were briefed about development plan details in meetings.

Hanewicz also pointed out that Gerdes is up for election next year, as he won a special election when Robert Blackmon resigned from the council to run for mayor in 2021.

Floyd said he’s pushed hard for a different direction for the city.

Figgs-Sanders and outgoing chairperson Brandi Gabbard voiced support for Gerdes, whom Gabbard called “a calm force,” praising Gerdes for his steadiness. Council members Driscoll and Ed Montanari said they were impressed with Hanewicz for showing “leadership during difficult subjects.”

The vote came down between Gerdes and Hanewicz. Gerdes has been more favorable toward the Rays and city administration, while Hanewicz has been more skeptical of the deal. Gerdes’ uncle is City Administrator Rob Gerdes.

Council member Richie Floyd flipped his vote in favor of Gerdes after his own nomination received one vote. He had voted for Hanewicz four times, but she failed to secure a majority . In between votes, Floyd said, he’d be happy to work with either council member.

“I’m happy to serve with either of them,” he said.

The City Council will vote to ratify the new chairperson and vice chairperson in the new year.

Figgs-Sanders will not only lead the council during meetings, but she is also the council’s representative on the Community Benefits Advisory Council, which will assess the Historic Gas Plant District redevelopment.
