Becoming a good writer takes time, practice, and perseverance. Few people find writing easy, no matter how often or how much they write. This is because when you write, you are undertaking a complex process. This QUT write resource will guide you through the process and give you the skills and knowledge to develop into a confident writer.

Good academic writing always considers the audience and the topic . A writer should always consider the reader’s role, expectations and purpose for reading. For assessed tasks think about the criteria used to mark your work. Your writing should show you understand the topic and that you can use your knowledge to respond to the task.

Good academic writing is clear, coherent, and credible .

A writer’s meaning should always be clear to the reader. One way to achieve clarity is to effectively use grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. Coherence describes how you link your ideas so they flow from sentence to sentence and between paragraphs. The goal is to be logical as the reader cannot ask questions to check what you mean. Finally, good academic writing is credible . Check you have used the most appropriate research to support your ideas, looked at the issue from relevant perspectives and that you know your topic. If you keep these considerations in mind, you are on the way to producing stronger writing.

Lecturer in Drama

PhD (University of Queensland)

Kathryn is a dramaturg and theatre historian and she is currently a Senior Lecturer at QUT in the Acting and Drama area in the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Justice (CIEJ). Her research interests include dramaturgy and socially engaged, feminist and transcultural performance practices. She completed her PhD on the Pedagogy of Dramaturgy in 2017 at the University of Queensland and has taught extensively in the last seven years at Institutions including: Western Australian Academy for the Performing Arts (WAAPA), Flinders University, Griffith University, and the Southbank Institute of Technology.

Her publications include a history of Australian dramaturgy 2000-2010 in Catching Australian Theatre in the 2000s (Australian Theatre Series, Bril) as well as with the Theatre, Dance Performance Training; International Journal of Media and Performance; Australasian Drama Studies; Performing Ethos; Body, Space, Technology; Social Alternatives, Fusions and various industry journals. She was a long-time Real Time contributor and continues to mentor young critics and dramaturgs. She has received a Fellowship with the National Library of Australia in 2021, as well as an Indigenous Associate Fellowship (AFHEA) in 2021.

Her current research projects include an international collaboration around climate crisis, The SAND Project. Outcomes from The SAND Project included world premiere performances at the Tokyo Performing Arts Market (TPAM) in February, 2020 and the Tokyo Tokyo Olympic Arts and Cultural Festival in June, 2021;

Rovers Community Engagement which is a project to explore First Nations community engagement models for Australian performance in collaboration with First Nation artists during its nine-stop national tour (2021) after its debut in 2018 at the Brisbane Festival. Webisodes from the project will also air on SBS TV.

Since 2021 she has won $105,000 of external and internal grant funding through QUT, building on decades of grant funding success in the arts and cultural sector. Her dramaturgy practice is in text-based theatre, contemporary performance and socially engaged practice. She is currently company dramaturg and Chair with award-winning, all-female theatre company, Belloo Creative, who are the Company in Residence at Queensland Theatre 2019/2020: www.belloocreative.com and whose adaptation of Kris Olsen's memoir, Boy Lost will be on at Queensland Theatre in late 2022. She has worked for every major festival and theatre company in Queensland; nationally for Theatreworks (Melbourne); Malthouse (Melbourne); Australian Theatre Transforms (Sydney) and the Darwin Writers Centre and internationally for the Factory Theatre and Cahoots Theatre Projects in Toronto, Canada. Formerly, she has worked as CEO of Playlab (2004-2008), Australia’s second largest theatrical publisher and as Resident Artist for World Interplay, which was the largest festival for young playwrights in the world. She has also worked for Arts Queensland and other arts organisations in her twenty-five years in the performance sector. She has also worked for every major venue in Queensland, including QPAC, Metro Arts, Brisbane Powerhouse, the Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts and regional venues across the state as well as Theatreworks and Malthouse in Melbourne. She has dramaturged for the National Play Festival, the Regional Theatre-makers Festival, the Australian Script Centre, StagesWA and Darwin Writers Centre and for Playworks and ANPC (now Playwrighting Australia). She was the Executive Director of Playlab from 2004-2008, publishing twenty-four new Australian plays; Resident Artist with World Interplay in 2005 and she worked in Arts Policy for Arts Queensland in 1999, 2001 and 2009. Publications include a history of Australian dramaturgy 2000-2010 in Catching Australian Theatre in the 2000s published by Brill/Rodopi. Awards: QUT: Vice Chancellor’s Performance Award 2015: Nomination for the QUT Dean’s Award for Sustained Contribution by Sessional Staff 2012; Alrene Sykes Memorial Prize for Australian Literature, 1997. The ability to create, build worlds and animate characters opens doors to a variety of careers. Animation is an important part of filmmaking, TV production and creative advertising and marketing; it’s also integral to games production.

This degree allows you to learn the various creative aspects and techniques involved in animated filmmaking, visual effects and games by providing a solid grounding in the fundamental practices, theory, techniques and art of animation. The course progresses from generalised to more specific allowing you to explore the broad areas and latest techniques involved in animated filmmaking and then develop a more advanced specialisation in your area of interest.

What to expect.

You will be encouraged to experiment with a range of animation styles and techniques while producing your own animations, graphics and visual effects. Studies in industry workflows, tools, process and skills will equip you with a strong understanding of current industry practices—from concept development to timelines and finished works. Later in your degree your studies will include CGI production in preparation for final-year projects and work integrated learning opportunities.

Careers and outcomes

Graduates of the animation major are employed in various industries and fields, ranging from film, games and education to architecture, engineering and medical research for assisting with product previsualisation. The animation field is broad in terms of possible creative and technical roles including concept artists, storyboarders, animators, modelers, producers, visual effects artists, game artists and directors, to mention a few. Graduates from our program have worked on award-winning films including Bluey, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Avengers: Endgame, Guardians of the Galaxy, I, Robot, King Kong, Godzilla and How to Train Your Dragon. They have also been part of teams that developed games such as Hellblade and Disney Infinity 3.0 at major studios such as Animal Logic, Disney Animation, Lucasfilm, Double Negative, Rising Sun Pictures and Weta Digital.

This course can be also followed with a graduate-entry teacher education course* which enables you to become a qualified teacher. Pathways also exist to prepare you for further study including research.

* Entry to graduate-entry teacher education courses usually requires that you have studied a range of units in a different subject area to the main focus of your degree. Course structure, your course.

To meet the course requirements of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Animation), you must complete the following:

Two common units (KYB101 and KYB102) – 24 credit points
Animation major – 168 credit points
Complementary studies – 48 credit points from the Situated Creative Practice Extension plus 48 credit points chosen from a minor or unit options (electives).

learn to use 3D computer graphics, drawing and motion graphics
study animation, screen history and practices
expand your interest and knowledge of the animation medium
extend your knowledge of animation practices
engage in studio-based learning and respond creatively to project briefs
understand the principles of 3D character animation, real-time 3D computer graphics, compositing for visual effects and motion capture for virtual production
develop your critical analysis skills to evaluate your own work and the way you present your ideas visually
apply your accumulated learning to produce a major creative work exploring any aspect or medium of animation as a showcase of your professional skills and knowledge

Study overseas

Study overseas while gaining credit towards your QUT creative industries degree with one of our worldwide exchange partners. Why choose this course?

This double degree prepares you to work as a professional creative writer, as a barrister or solicitor in private practice, or to practise with large companies, in government agencies, or as a policy adviser. Through the combination of creative writing with law, you will enhance your employability in your chosen field, whether in the legal fraternity or as a creative practitioner. You can advise on the legalities in the publishing or creative writing industries, or in relation to copyright or intellectual property law, or work as an editor of legal-related publications or in a position specialising in law in the publishing industry.

Immerse yourself in the creative writing major with up to 16 discipline units and gain in-depth knowledge in your specialisation. Your law degree component comprises nineteen core units and eight law elective units, which can include a third study area as a minor or electives from across QUT.

We offer the largest and most comprehensive undergraduate writing course in South-East Queensland with the broadest range of units on offer. We take a transdisciplinary approach from the outset, encouraging you as a specialist creative writer to work in teams with others who have different creative skill sets. You will graduate with advanced writing and communication competence—a rare skill keenly sought by employers.

You will be taught by highly experienced and published authors, scholars, and experts in creative writing.

Visits from other writers, editors and publishers will further help you gain a unique perspective on writing as a vocation and as a critical and creative practice. Writers, editors and publishers regularly provide guest lectures for the benefit of students, and you’ll have access to the industry and national writing communities.

What to expect.

Both creative writing and law require high-calibre, sophisticated communication. This double degree will strongly develop your writing skills which can be applied through your law studies and in future careers.

Areas of study include all the major areas of law and creative writing. In the creative writing component of the course, you will work intensively on your writing in a number of forms including novels, short stories, creative non-fiction, memoir, genre writing, and poetry. You will develop comprehensive editing skills as well as self-editing skills. You will learn about and engage with local writing contexts, as well as enter contemporary debates around ideas that illuminate and challenge what people write and how they write it. You will learn to think and write critically about texts. You will learn how to engage readers through emotional story telling. You will progress towards a major piece of creative writing in a form and genre of your choice at the end of your degree.

In the law component, there is a practical focus which, when combined with creative writing study, will equip you for a broad range of careers, including legal practice.

Careers and outcomes

Your law degree will provide additional career opportunities, and legal skills you can apply in your creative industries career. Alternatively your writing skills will complement your legal studies, should you choose to pursue a career as a lawyer. Your degrees in law and creative writing will prove invaluable in legal careers within publishing, intellectual property or policy development, or in writing careers focusing on legal issues such as crime writing, or case reporting.

Graduates can work as writers and editors in legal, community and freelance capacities.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is accredited by the Legal Practitioners' Admissions Board (LPAB). To become a solicitor or barrister, you will need to complete practical legal training (PLT) and pass the Bar Exams. QUT offers PLT through our Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

Details and units

Course structure.

In order to complete this course, you must complete a total of 528 credit points comprising 192 credit points from the Bachelor of Fine Arts and 336 credit points from the Bachelor of Laws (Honours). You will study fine arts and law units in your first your years and for the remainder of this course you will concentrate on law studies.

Fine Arts Component: You will complete two common units (24 credit points) and a Fine Arts major (168 credit points) from one of the following disciplines (Creative Writing; Film, Screen and New Media).

Law Component: To meet the requirements of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) component of the double degree, you must complete a total of 336 credit points comprising 240 credit points of core units, 24 credit points of law electives, 48 credit points of general electives and 24 credit points of advanced law electives. General electives may be selected as a 48 credit point Law, Technology and Innovation Minor or other uni wide minor; or as four standalone electives selected from the law electives list or university-wide electives list.

Successful completion of a minor will be recognised on the Academic Record and the Australian Education Graduation Statement.

Law Honours Grading Honours grading is based on a whole of course GPA.

The MFA at SJSU balances literary study with creative writing workshops. The program is designed to give students the opportunity to develop their talents in more than one genre while increasing their knowledge of modern and contemporary literature in a variety of forms and across a diverse range of cultural and critical perspectives. The program also features courses that provide hands-on preparation for beginning one's writing career in a globalized, technologically enhanced world.

Situated in downtown San Jose, in the heart of Silicon Valley's cultural center, the MFA program offers students a portal into the writing life. SJSU is the literary incubator for Silicon Valley. Students will be taught by instructors who are themselves publishing poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, translators, and editors - many of whom work in both traditional and cutting-edge forms, and who are involved in the arts and technology networks of Silicon Valley.

The English Department publishes Reed magazine, one of the oldest campus literary journals on the West Coast, with over 60 years of continuous publication. Reed is student-produced and offers opportunity for the editing experience as well as a possible publishing venue.

Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing +

Undergraduate program director.

The goals of the BA in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing are: to provide students the opportunity to concentrate their studies in the field of Creative Writing. To provide these students a course of study in the craft, theory, and practice of writing fiction, creative nonfiction, and/or poetry. To provide these students a course of study in literature and expository writing which will support their studies in Creative Writing courses. Many students earning a BA in English with a Creative Writing concentration will continue on to apply for admission to the MFA Program in Creative Writing, or will pursue a professional Creative Writing career.

Undergraduate classes in Creative Writing at SJSU are supplemented by the readings and other literary programs sponsored by the SJSU Center for Literary Arts (CLA). Since 1986, the CLA has provided readings, lectures and seminars that allow the San Jose community to interact with writers of contemporary literature who have demonstrated exceptional voice and vision. Its mission is to spread the influence of and interest in literature throughout the South Bay area and to facilitate cross-cultural understanding in the region's ethnically diverse population through the appreciation of works of literature. The CLA's Major Authors Series has been the most significant literary series in the region, presenting to the community five winners of the Nobel Prize, fifteen winners of the National Book Award and twenty-eight winners of the Pulitzer Prize.

The CLA is funded by grants and donations from individuals and foundations.

SJSU also publishes REED Magazine, an annual student-run Literary Magazine published every Spring and featuring submissions of original poetry and short stories from across the nation. (For more information click on http://www.reedmag.org/drupal/.)

The MFA at SJSU is a dual-genre program that balances literary study with creative writing workshops. The program is designed to give students the opportunity to develop their talents in more than one genre while increasing their knowledge of modern and contemporary literature in a variety of forms and across a diverse range of cultural and critical perspectives. The program also features courses that provide hands-on preparation for beginning one's writing career in a globalized, technologically enhanced world.

Situated in downtown San Jose, in the heart of Silicon Valley's cultural center, the MFA program will offer students a portal into the writing life. Students will be taught by instructors who are themselves publishing poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, translators, and editors - many of whom work in both traditional and cutting-edge forms, and who are involved in the arts and technology networks of Silicon Valley.

Samuel Maio

Samuel Maio is the author of THE BURNING OF LOS ANGELES (1996), and CREATING ANOTHER SELF: VOICE IN MODERN AMERICAN PERSONAL POETRY (2005), both from Truman State University Press. His poems, essays, and reviews have been published widely in periodicals.

Alan Soldofsky

Alan Soldofsky is a veteran of the San Francisco Bay Area poetry scene. His 2013 collection of poems, IN THE BUDDHA FACTORY, from Truman State University Press, was a finalist for the T. S. Eliot Award. He has been a contributing editor of Poetry Flash, and co-host of the popular poetry show “Planet on the Table” on Berkeley’s KPFA radio. He has published three poetry chapbooks: Kenora Station, Staying Home, and Holding Adam / My Father’s Books, a chapbook that includes a selection of poems by his son, Adam Soldofsky. Over the last three decades, his poems have been published widely in magazines and journals,

Nick Taylor

Nick Taylor is the author of the historical novels The Disagreement (Simon & Schuster, 2008) and FATHER JUNIPERO'S CONFESSOR (Heyday, 2013). Nick's work has earned a Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship and the Michael Shaara Prize for Civil War Fiction. He has also received support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the William R. Kenan, Jr., Fund for Historic Preservation. Currently Nick serves as Associate Professor of English and Director of the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies at San José State University. In 2014, Doubleday published his first thriller, The Setup Man, under the pseudonym T.T. Monday.

Cathleen Miller

Cathleen Miller's biography of Dr, Nafis Sadik, CHAMPION OF CHOICE, is the result of ten years of work and many, many strange circumstances. Other publication credits include travel stories for a variety of newspapers and anthologies. Miller is also the coauthor of DESERT FLOWER, the life story of activist Waris Dirie which describes the Somali nomad's experience with female genital mutilation. This book's print version has sold 11 million copies in 55 languages, and was later adapted as a feature film released in 34 nations. Cathleen Miller is a professor of creative writing at San José State University.

Scott Sublett

Scott Winfield Sublett, a veteran screenwriter screenwriting teacher, is known for writing BYE-BYE BIN LADEN (2009), GENERIC THRILLER (2009) and PIZZA WARS: THE MOVIE (2002). He also has published a screenwriting guide, SCREENWRITING FOR NEUROTICS (2014).

Sally Ashton

Sally Ashton is a poet, writer, teacher, and Editor-in-Chief of DMQ Review, an online journal featuring poetry and art. She earned her BA in English with a creative writing minor from SJSU, and her MFA in Poetry and Literature from the Bennington Writing Seminars.

She is the recipient of an Artist Fellowship, Poetry, from Arts Council Silicon Valley and a fellowship from Montalvo Arts Center. She is the author of three books of poetry, two of which were nominated for Pushcart Prizes. Poems also appear in the textbook, An Introduction to the Prose Poem, and Breathe: 101 Contemporary Odes, as well as in literary journals such as Sentence: A Journal of Prose Poetics, Brevity, Zyzzyva, 5am, Mississippi Review, and Poet Lore. She was awarded the Fish Flash Fiction First Prize, an international award, in 2014.

Ashton was appointed the second Santa Clara County Poet Laureate on April 1, 2011. During her term, she compiled a collection of the favorite poems of County residents posted on a project blog. Besides teaching at San Jose State University, she teaches private workshops and at writer’s workshops including Disquiet: An International Literary Program in Lisbon, Portugal.

Selena Anderson

Selena Anderson is a writer from Texas. She completed her MFA at Columbia University where she won the Transatlantic/Henfield Prize, and her Ph.D. from the University of Houston. Her stories have appeared in Glimmer Train, Kenyon Review, AGNI, and Cosmonauts Avenue, and The Best of Gigantic Anthology. She is working on a collection and a novel.
