Our application review process is a holistic and selective process, where no single criterion guarantees admission. Our holistic review process is centered on three of our institutional core values— Vires, Artes, Mores .

resume help fsu

The first torch, Vires , is strength . Our focus in this area is rigor, grades, and courses taken while in high school. Each applicant is evaluated based upon the performance within the context of the student's academic environment.

Transcripts - GPA - Course Rigor - High School Profile

The second torch, Artes , is skill . We want to see how students use their out-of-classroom time, whether through sports, clubs, organizations, family responsibilities, employment, or other achievements.

Resume - Academic and Non-academic Involvement

The third torch, Mores , is character . We are taking the information students have shared with us to learn who they are, any formative experiences they may have had, and what their life goals may be.

Additional consideration will also be given to applicants applying to the CARE Summer Bridge Program, as well as exceptionally talented visual and performing artists and athletes.

Our focus in this area is rigor, grades, and courses taken while in high school. Each applicant is evaluated based upon the performance within the context of the student's academic environment and coursework available at their high school.

The Florida Board of Governors sets the minimum eligibility requirements in the State University System (SUS). Satisfying these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to Florida State University. Admission is selective, and admitted students typically exceed the minimum requirements.

Test Score Information

Requiring a test score for admissions consideration is not an institutional choice. FSU, along with Florida's 11 other public universities, is subject to Florida Board of Governors admissions regulation 6.002 which requires first-year students seeking admission to submit a test score.

When evaluating students for admission, we use the highest earned ACT, CLT and SAT sub scores to calculate the highest ACT, CLT and/or SAT total score (a process known as "super scoring").

In May 2023, the Classic Learning Initiatives, Inc. published The Concordance Relationship Between the Classic Learning Test (CLT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) , establishing a concordance table between the CLT and the SAT.

FSU does not accept self-reported test scores from the Common App. Students should self-report their test scores on the Application Status Check using the Self-reported Test Scores form.

At least one test score must be submitted before the application deadline, but additional tests may be considered if provided by the test score deadline:

Essay & Resume

The essay and resume provide another opportunity to learn more about you.

The essay, a required component of the application, should be no longer than 650 words, and may be uploaded after the application has been submitted. Please choose a topic from the list below:

Application Essay Prompts

  • Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
  • The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
  • Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
  • Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
  • Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
  • Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
  • Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

The resume should be no longer than two pages, and may be uploaded after the application has been submitted. It should include a list of activities such as (but not limited to) service work, employment, family contributions such as caring for siblings or sick relatives, and extracurricular and summer activities.

Please allow 3-4 business days for us to pull your essay and resume/activities if you submitted your application through the Common App.

While these certifications do not fulfill official requirements like transcripts, they do help us better understand your academic preparedness and fit for Florida State University.

If you have certifications from Schoolhouse.world that you would like to share with us, please send us a copy of your Schoolhouse Portfolio to [email protected] with the subject line, "Schoolhouse.world Portfolio".

Earning both a High School Diploma and an Associate in Arts (AA) degree

A high school student earning both the standard high school diploma and an Associate in Arts (AA) degree through dual enrollment from the Florida College System or the State University System of Florida must apply to FSU as a first-year student. Applicants must adhere to the first-year admission deadlines. In addition, applicants may be subject to additional major deadlines/requirements. Carefully review all major requirements at Academic Program Guide .

Those students who are receiving an AA degree but do not meet the admissions requirements under the Florida Board of Governors Admission Regulation 6.002, may be considered for admission under Florida Board of Governors Admission Regulation 6.005. Students admitted under this regulation are first-time-in-college (FTIC) students although they are not required to submit test scores. However, they should meet the requirements for their selected major as listed in FSU's Academic Program Guide . If admitted, they must submit a $200 enrollment deposit, attend a first-year orientation session, and are eligible to apply for on-campus housing. Admitted students without a test score are not eligible to be considered for first-year merit scholarships from the Office of Admissions. Students considered for admission under FL BOG 6.005 will be required to submit all official college transcript(s) for evaluation prior to an admission offer being made; they must also provide a final official college transcript displaying the A.A. before enrolling at FSU. Any FTIC student admitted under this regulation must immediately notify the Office of Admissions if they will not receive their degree. All first-year students admitted under this regulation who do not receive the Associate in Arts degree will have their offer of admission revoked.

Home Education and GED Information

Florida State University considers applications from students who participated in a Home-Education program, or who have earned a GED. Home-Education applicants must complete the SSAR, while students earning a GED must submit official GED results along with an official, partial high school transcript. In addition, all applicants must submit at least one ACT, CLT and/or SAT test score by the application deadline to be considered for admission. First-Year admission is a holistic and selective process, and no single criterion guarantees admission to our university.

'A significant step': FSU, TMH, Apalachee Center to launch psychiatry residency program

resume help fsu

Florida State University’s College of Medicine recently announced plans to launch a new psychiatry residency program — an addition that will bring psychiatric training into the Tallahassee area.

In partnership with Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) and the Apalachee Center , the initiative would help address the crucial need for training mental health care providers in the region and across Florida.

FSU’s announcement about the future program comes after the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) granted the university and its partners initial accreditation to move forward with the plan.

“This is exciting and welcomed news,” FSU College of Medicine Interim Dean Alma Littles said in a prepared statement. “There is a recognized shortage of psychiatrists in the state and a more critical shortage in this area of the state.”

Other FSU news: Florida State ranks in annual Top 100 Worldwide Universities List for 7th year in a row

The program will be based at the Apalachee Center located on Capital Circle Northeast — which is a nonprofit organization that specializes in providing mental health care to those experiencing emotional, psychiatric and substance abuse crises — and it will provide medical school graduates with four years of training in psychiatry.

A small group of four residents of the program will begin July 1.

“This represents an enormous step forward for behavioral health services in this region and promises to dramatically enrich the pool of psychiatrists available to care for the needs of North Floridians,” Jay Reeve, president and chief executive officer of the Apalachee Center, said in a release.

“Our new psychiatry residents will benefit enormously from the coordination and broad training experience, especially with traditionally underserved populations, that this system of care offers," he added.

A 2022 poll conducted by TMH shows that mental health care and medical care accessibility were tied as the most important issues that affect the Tallahassee community, with care access being more difficult for underserved individuals such as the elderly and minorities.

Although psychiatry is one of the fastest growing residency programs in the nation, nearly 60% of graduating medical students end up leaving Florida for residency training because of a shortage of residency slots in the state, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges .

With the addition of the psychiatry residency program, FSU's College of Medicine will offer students a total of nine residency programs and three fellowships.

In the meantime, the Florida Senate recently advanced a bill that would designate behavioral health teaching hospitals across the state. Through a $114 million plan to address a state shortage of mental health professionals, four pilot facilities would link to medical schools in Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami and Gainesville.

Mridul Mazumder, clerkship director for geriatrics at the College of Medicine’s Tallahassee Regional Campus, will serve as program director of the new psychiatry residency initiative.

Mazumder says the residency program will get monetary support from TMH and the Apalachee Center — which will be managed through FSU’s Graduate Medical Education Office — with state and federal funding sources being considered for additional funds.

Through the program, psychiatry residents will train in providing inpatient, residential and outpatient services, with training sites potentially including the Apalachee Center as well as TMH’s 13 outpatient clinics and two acute psychiatric hospitals, according to the university.

TMH vice president and chief integration officer Dean Watson says the future program will help address two of the Tallahassee region’s top health priorities — mental health and substance abuse.

“The expansion of residency programs is a significant step toward our shared goal of becoming an Academic Medical Center where the latest treatments, technologies and resources are developed to the benefit of our patients and community,” Watson said in a prepared statement.

The efforts of FSU and its partners toward establishing Tallahassee as a leading medical research and health care center also include plans to build an academic health center on TMH's campus through the FSU Health initiative . The center's construction process is expected to take a couple of years.

In addition, the university’s College of Medicine has plans to add a family medicine residency program in Immokalee, Florida, where a psychiatry postdoctoral fellowship already exists.

“This growth in our graduate medical education programs will provide opportunities for more of our students and residents to train and remain in this area to practice,” Littles said, referring to the psychiatry residency program.

“The program will be a part of the growing FSU Health initiative, adding cutting-edge research and discovery of new knowledge to improve treatment of mental health conditions,” she added.

Yale to resume requiring standardized test scores for applicants

Yale University announced Thursday that it will resume requiring prospective students to the Ivy League institution to submit standardized test scores when applying for admission.

The New Haven, Connecticut-based university said "research and reflections" have shown that testing can "highlight an applicant’s areas of academic strength" and can help add diversity in the classroom.

It switched to a test-optional policy nearly four years ago because of the coronavirus pandemic .

"Let’s start with what we know to be true: every standardized test is imperfect and incomplete. No exam can demonstrate every student’s college readiness or perfectly predict future performance," Yale officials said in a news release . "Yale has not, does not, and will never rely on testing alone to assess student preparedness."

The change will be required for all first-year applicants beginning in the fall of 2025. It will also allow prospective students to include Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam scores in place of the ACT or SAT, Yale said.

Earlier this month, another Ivy League school, Dartmouth College, announced a similar change to its policy. Beginning with the undergraduate class of 2029, standardized test scores would again be required.

Dartmouth said a  study  commissioned by university President Sian Beilock and conducted by university economists and an educational sociologist found that standardized test scores, when evaluated alongside high school grades, were "the most reliable indicators for success in Dartmouth’s course of study."

Yale acknowledged that reviewing applications without ACT or SAT scores was a "positive experience," but found that it worked to the disadvantage of prospective students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Because testing had been removed, a greater weight was placed on other parts of the application such as rigorous high school courses and extracurricular activities that were "full of enrichment opportunities."

The institution said that students attending well-resourced high schools readily have access to such activities and advanced classes. Teachers at these schools are also more "accustomed to praising students’ unique classroom contributions," Yale said.

Students at high schools with fewer resources don't have as many opportunities to take advanced courses, Yale said, and "teachers with large classes may use positive but generic words of praise in recommendation letters."

"Students’ out-of-school commitments may include activities that demonstrate extraordinary leadership and contributions to family and community but reveal nothing about their academic preparedness," the school said. "With no test scores to supplement these components, applications from students attending these schools may leave admissions officers with scant evidence of their readiness for Yale."

Standardized test score requirements have long been criticized for favoring wealthy, white applicants and putting minority and low-income students at a disadvantage.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, commonly known as MIT, said in March 2022, it was  reinstating test-score requirements  in an effort to be “transparent and equitable in our expectations.” Columbia University in New York City, however, said in March that it would not require applicants to submit ACT or SAT scores. It is believed to be the first Ivy League school to adopt the policy permanently,  according to NBC New York .
