Alpena community college hires new esports coach.

ALPENA — Alpena Community College is looking to bring its esports program to its former glory with the hiring of its new e-sports coach Nicholas McDonald.

“I think a lot of people don’t realize how large esports has really become,” said McDonald “Not only locally, but nationally and internationally.”

McDonald is familiar with both esports and ACC not only being an ACC alumni but also being a founding member of the college’s first Esports team back in 2019.

“I was a student here (Alpena Community College) a few different times in my adult life,” said McDonald. “I originally started the esports team, for ACC, back in 2019. We had a lot of success, we took second states in our league. Once I saw the job posted online, I definitely wanted to see it through and take it to the next level.”

According to McDonald, despite little promotion, the esports program has already seen a decent amount of members and interest.

“We have over 10 students that are interested in a variety of different games,” said McDonald. “Right now I’m trying to field a lot of scheduling.”

According to McDonald, the team will be competing in the National Junior Community College League which allows for a variety of games for students to play professionally ranging from “Fortnite” to “Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate”.

“So in the league that we’re actually in, we’re in the NJ CC league for esports, which is national junior community college,” said McDonald. “We have everything from games like “League of Legends”, “Call of Duty: Warzone”, “Fortnite”, and even things like “Super Smash Brothers (Ultimate)”. So there’s quite a wide range.

The program is also receiving a lot of support from ACC according to McDonald, with scholarships being on the table for the fall school year.

“So we’re actually really excited to announce, we have full backing from the president of the college and from all the board members,” said McDonald. “So starting in the fall, we actually will be offering scholarships, full scholarships to students to compete on the team. So part of my job as head coach is to actively recruit from other high schools, other colleges, hopefully, from around the state, and hopefully, nationwide eventually.”

In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), careers in health education have an expected job growth rate of 7% between 2022 and 2032, which is faster than average. “This trend not only opens up diverse career opportunities, but also places health coaches at the forefront of a healthcare revolution, making a significant impact on the well-being of individuals and communities alike,” Barrera said.

If you’re a health nut who likes to help others, health coaching could be a great career to pursue. But before you invest too much time and money into your education, one of your most pressing questions is likely: How much does a health coach make? 

There are many factors that can affect your earnings as a health coach. Here’s what you should know about this career and how much a health coach can really make.

What is a health coach?

A health coach is essentially an authority on wellness who also acts as a mentor. They help others feel their best through individualized lifestyle changes that meet their unique needs and health goals. 

Unlike medical professionals who may prescribe treatments or specific diets, health coaches focus on the broader concept of wellness. They consider various aspects of their clients’ lives, from nutrition and exercise to stress management and emotional health.

By offering guidance, support, and accountability, health coaches assist their clients in making step-by-step changes to their food and lifestyle choices. The goal is to gradually improve their health and happiness and to develop a deeper understanding of the foods and activities that best support them.

Health coaches can work in private practice, wellness centers, gyms, and in conjunction with other health professionals such as nutritionists, doctors, and therapists.

What kind of training does a health coach need?

The training and certification process for becoming a health coach can vary widely depending on your area of focus and where you work. However, there are some common elements across most health coach training programs.

Although not always mandatory, a degree in a health-related field (such as nutrition, fitness, nursing, psychology, or public health ) can help give you the necessary background to make you an effective health coach. 

Next, becoming certified will help you stand out as a legitimate expert and open up employment opportunities. Organizations such as the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) and the International Coach Federation (ICF) are among the well-respected certifying bodies in the field.

Certification usually involves a combination of coursework completion, hands-on coaching hours, and passing a comprehensive exam. You can often complete certification within a few months to a year, either as a standalone program or embedded in a broader degree program. 

To maintain certification, health coaches are usually required to complete continuing education units (CEUs) on a regular basis. This ensures that they stay up-to-date with the latest health and wellness research, trends, and coaching techniques.

How much does a health coach make?  

“The earnings of health coaches can vary widely depending on several factors, including their level of experience, education, location, and the type of clients they serve,” said Carey Peters, founding partner at Health Coach Institute . She provided some general factors that can influence health coach earnings:

  • Experience and expertise: Health coaches with more years of experience and specialized expertise may command higher fees.
  • Education and certification: Those with advanced degrees, certifications from reputable institutions, or specialized training may have the opportunity to charge higher rates.
  • Clientele: The type of clients a health coach serves can impact their earnings. Working with individuals or corporate clients, for example, may have different financial considerations.
  • Business model: Health coaches may earn income through one-on-one coaching, group coaching sessions, online programs, or a combination of these. Each business model can have different income potentials.
  • Market demand: The demand for health coaching services in a particular area or niche can affect pricing. In high-demand markets or for specialized services, coaches may be able to charge higher fees.
  • Marketing and branding: A well-established brand and effective marketing strategies can attract more clients and justify higher fees.

On average, a health coach earns $56,062 annually, but the salary range typically falls between $46,077 and $62,275, according to Salary.com. 

As Peters mentioned, your location can impact your earnings. Coaches in major metropolitan areas tend to be able to charge higher rates. For example, health coaches in Los Angeles earn an average of $78,884 annually, or $82,559 in New York City. 

On the other hand, providing services virtually may be more convenient and allow you to serve clients just about anywhere, but it could stunt your earning potential. Salary.com finds that the average virtual health coach salary is $47,444.

At a time when many publishers are cutting print days, the Deseret News in Utah is finding success with a new print product.

Dubbed “The Digest,” the free publication amasses the Deseret News’s best journalism from its various platforms and is delivered to 120,000 homes around Salt Lake City once a month. The Digest launched in September and has been profitable since October, publisher Burke Olsen said.

“The result has been great enthusiasm from advertisers because this is now, I think, the largest newspaper product (in Utah). It has the largest distribution of any print product in the state that I’m aware of,” Olsen said. “It reinvigorated our advertising base.”

Executives at the Deseret News took inspiration from the company’s direct-mail advertising publication, Hometown Values, which is distributed for free to half a million Utah homes. They adopted a similar approach to create The Digest, which they insert into select copies of Hometown Values. Every month, they target certain ZIP codes in counties around Salt Lake City based on the audiences their advertisers are trying to reach.

The Digest has become a “marketing product that pays for itself,” Olsen said. It helps acquaint Utah residents with the Deseret News brand by republishing stories from the company’s website, newspaper, magazine and religion-focused publication. (Deseret News is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.)

Olsen estimated that a person who lives in one of the counties the Deseret News is targeting will receive The Digest about three times a year. The company wants The Digest to feel different from its other products, and it wants to make sure people do not receive it so often that they decide to abandon the Deseret News’ paid products.

“We tend to target established ZIP codes, more residential homes than rental areas, people who tend to have higher incomes — more disposable income — and that’s because that’s attractive to our advertising base,” Olsen said. “Over time, as we figure out on behalf of our advertisers what works and based on what kind of subscription uptick we get, we might focus on some ZIP codes more often than others.”

The Digest has nearly twice the audience as the Deseret News’ other print products — a selling point to advertisers — and the company expects to make $250,000 in profit off The Digest alone by the end of the year.

The Deseret News has already gotten phone calls from people who received The Digest and decided to subscribe to the biweekly paper, Olsen said. He speculated that a print paper taps into a certain nostalgia and its physicality lends readers a sense of accomplishment when they finish an issue.

Fifteen-year-old Adam Kunz said he discovered the benefits of physical papers when he came across a free sample from the Deseret News in the mail in November. Until then, he got most of his news through online aggregators like Google News. Newspapers were associated with “boring, old people stuff,” and Kunz hadn’t realized that the Deseret News was still printing physical copies of its paper.

He was surprised by how much he liked having a tangible paper in which stories were neatly packed. Kunz told his mother he wanted a Deseret News subscription for Christmas and that if she wouldn’t pay for it, he would buy it himself. Now, he starts and ends his days with the paper, reading a few stories at a time so that he can make the papers — which come twice a week — last.

Kunz said he especially likes following national news and political coverage, including stories about the election and bills passing through the legislature. He’s amassed a huge stack of papers in his bedroom. Though his friends and family sometimes tease him for paying for a newspaper subscription, Kunz insists they don’t understand “the experience of actually sitting down and flipping through the pages,” something he says is “awesome.”

“I think everyone has a responsibility to know what’s going on in the world.”

Before becoming publisher, Olsen worked as Deseret News’ head digital officer. “I didn’t care about our print products for a long time,” he admitted. But The Digest has made him wonder if there’s a product or marketing campaign that could slow or even reverse declines in print readership.

Though The Digest is still very new, Olsen has started to wonder if it might eventually outlive the Deseret News’ print paper. That is one of the things the company will be evaluating as The Digest moves forward.

“There may come a point at which this is no longer feasible and profitable because the cost of paper and postage continues to go up,” Olsen said. “But until it does, we ought to use as publishers, as news media, every avenue in creative ways of reaching audiences with journalism that will help them make better decisions … because they’re better informed about the world.”
