Playback through any MIDI device

How your music sounds is important. Regain control: Musink will play back your score through the MIDI device of your choosing. Want to use a VST Host? No problem. A player piano? Of course. ‍ New to all of this? Don't worry, Musink will play just fine on your system without you needing to set up a thing.

Import and Export MIDI

What's the fastest way to notate Beethoven's 5th? Import it. Musink Pro converts MIDI files into sheet music, giving you a leg up.

MIDI input illustration with Musink Logo.

Enter notes using your MIDI keyboard

Musink Pro listens to any connected MIDI device - such as a keyboard - for note entry. Notes can be entered one at a time or with real-time recording on a single stave.

Drummers: feel forgotten? Don't.

This isn't another tool solely for orchestral scores that has you throwing your sticks at the screen. Musink was designed from the ground up with you in mind. Musink Pro is not like anything you've used before. Join thousands of drummers who have made their lives easier by switching to Musink.

Rapid Note Entry

Use Musink's unique system to stop wasting time writing note durations that mean nothing to your snare drum.

Drum layout rules

Percussion has its own notation conventions. Musink gets that.

Symbols Galore

Whether you're after HOH, sticking, buzz rolls, flams, or ghost notes, Musink has you covered with a single click.

Easy Voices

Write voices across several staves, and have them merge during publishing to PDF.

Musink Pro is just... better

Your time is valuable.

Musink Pro is full of small enhancements that save you hours of time and let you focus on writing

Automagic Setup

Just type the name of your instruments. Musink Pro will set up your project with the correct clefs and MIDI settings so you can get started straight away.

Legendary Support

Need advice? Unsure on how to do something? Musink Pro users have dedicated email support. Responses are typically within one business day.

Keep things tidy

Rename and reorder your sections, exercises, movements, and so on at the drop of a hat. This keeps managing larger projects simple.

MIDI in, MIDI out

Musink Pro accepts MIDI input and has better playback abilities

Listen as you write

You don't play with earmuffs on, so don't compose in silence. Musink Pro plays back notes as you add and drag them on the score, giving you instant feedback.

Import MIDI

Don't manually notate a score if you can just import it. Musink converts MIDI files into notation you can edit and print.

Plug in your MIDI keyboard

Enter notes either one-at-a time or by recording directly into Musink from any standard MIDI device. (Note that at present Musink Pro only records live input into one stave and voice at a time).

Loop your playback

Play portions of your score on loop, for as long as you wish, even if there are no repeat marks. This can be great for practising, learning, or when you're just a little stuck while composing.

Customisable metronome

Play back your music with a click track at a variety of intervals and volume settings.

Mute voices in a click

Need to focus on a particular instrument? Independently mute each voice with one click, or manually set volume and velocity of each stave by typing simple instructions.

Tune up, tune down

Do you expect your trumpet to sound a Bb when you wrote a C? Want to quickly drop everything two octaves? Musink Pro lets you retune each instrument up or down without affecting how notation appears when printed.

Directly input raw MIDI instructions into scores for ultimate control over playback, without affecting how your score appears as a PDF.

Middle-C Adjustment

This one's a bit technical. Musink lets you easily move Middle-C to ensure playback is compatible with all your MIDI devices.

Deeply Customisable PDF Creation

Musink uses a publish-to-PDF system which automatically lays your music out on the page. Musink Pro supercharges that system.

Template Editor

Musink's page templates define how your work will look as a PDF. These place titles, set fonts, and space your music. Re-use them across projects to keep the look of your compositions consistent - and changeable in seconds. Use Musink Pro's template editor to customise templates or build your own. Create a look that matches your project's unique style and feel. ‍ Musink Lite ships with a limited number of templates and does not offer customisation.

Customise on the fly

Use your page templates more flexibly by changing layout logic or leaving blank pages for your students to leave handwritten notes.

Musink Pro can clean up your score during PDF creation, creating scores that are tidier or easier to read for groups and conductors.

Export Templates

Share your page templates with others - or your other computer - to get consistent PDF styling across your projects

Plans & Pricing

Musink lite, musink pro subscription, musink pro eternal license, do subscriptions and eternal licenses have the same features.

Yes, they are both Musink Pro. They have different rules about updates and offline-use though. Check the other questions in this section for details.

Should I pick an Eternal License or a Subscription?

Pick an eternal license if:

  • You use one computer for composition, and rarely change computers. Though, remember you can purchase two licenses if want to use Musink on two devices.
  • You are regularly offline or offline for long periods while using the software
  • You want to pay just once , then forget about it
  • You are happy to only receive minor software updates in the future

Pick a subscription if:

  • You can usually be connected to the internet when you compose (slow connections are OK)
  • You regularly change which computer you use for composition
  • You'd like to try Musink Pro cheaply and pay a small amount monthly
  • You want to make sure you get all future updates

There is more detail about the eternal and subscription licenses below.

How do Eternal Licenses work?

Installation.

  • You can install Musink Pro on one personal computer.
  • If you replace your computer you can ask us to move your license to your new PC.
  • Anyone with a log-in to your computer can use Musink Pro on your computer.
  • You can use Musink Pro forever.
  • If you are offline for longer than 30 days, Musink will ask you to connect to the internet so you can keep using it.

You pay only once.

You get the current version of Musink and any minor updates and bug fixes to that version. When a major update is released - which means a big new feature has been added - you will not receive that update. You can keep using the version you have, though.

How do Subscriptions work?

  • You can install Musink Pro on two personal computers simultaneously.
  • Anyone with a log-in to your computer can use Musink Pro on your computer
  • You can switch between computers, but you cannot use Musink Pro on both of your computers at exactly the same time (even if you have four arms).
  • You can use Musink Pro so long as your subscription is current.
  • If you are offline for longer than 48 hours, Musink will ask you to connect to the internet so you can keep using it.

You pay a small amount every calendar month or once per year. You can cancel your subscription at any time. Licenses can't be paused or refunded, but if you cancel you can always get a new license when you're ready to compose music again.

Musink Pro updates are included in your subscription. This means you'll always be running the most up-to-date version with the newest features.

Can Musink Lite open Musink Pro scores?

Usually yes, but Musink Lite can't access features that rely on Musink Pro. For example, if you change the Musink Pro MIDI settings, you can't change them back in Musink Lite because Musink Lite simply doesn't have a button for that. Additionally, Musink Pro gets updated more commonly than Musink Lite. Sometimes this means Musink Lite can't open Musink Pro scores until an update is available for Musink Lite.

System Requirements

Which operating systems does musink run on.

Musink requires Windows 10, 11, or later. It might work on older versions of Windows but it is not formally tested on those systems.

Musink Pro customers can contact me to request older Musink Pro versions which are known to work on Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP Home SP3, XP Professional (x64) SP2. These older versions are relatively stable but do contain some bugs that are fixed in the most recent version, and lack some of the most recent features.

If you're on an Apple Mac, click here to be notified when Musink is ready for Mac. If you're on something a little more niche (Android, Chrome OS, Linux) then Musink will not work for you.

What are the minimum hardware requirements?

Almost all modern PCs will meet the recommended hardware requirements. If you can run Windows without major issues, then your computer is powerful enough to run Musink. Specifics are below:

* If the .NET Framework is not installed. This framework comes preinstalled with most versions of Windows meaning Musink requires around 20MB in total.

What do I need for MIDI Playback?

You will need one or more functioning MIDI devices installed on your computer. Most versions of Windows come with a basic MIDI package already installed. To test whether you have a MIDI device installed, open any MIDI file on your computer. If it plays, Musink playback should work. If you would like to install a MIDI device, Musink help has a list of free devices (and other help with MIDI playback).

What do I need for MIDI recording and input?

You will need a copy of Musink Pro, and a MIDI device (such as a MIDI keyboard) that can send MIDI messages to your computer. If you do not have any such device, Musink Pro will work, but you will not be able to use the MIDI-in functionality.

If you are purchasing hardware, remember that some cheaper soundcards, MIDI cables, and MIDI ports can cause latency (delay) issues. This is not a Musink bug, but a hardware performance issue. Musink Pro can be adjusted to allow for input latency so long as the latency is consistent and not more than 2 seconds. It also has step-input functionality, for which latency issues usually do not matter.

Select your OS

  • Musink currently only works on Windows. Click here if you are on MacOS (Apple).

StaffPad is an award-winning music composition app, designed for pen and touch, and built for composers. StaffPad lets you write music notation in your own handwriting; record and import audio; edit with the convenience of touch, and hear your composition played back with breathtakingly realistic sounds .

StaffPad Reader is made for musicians. It's a free app that connects to StaffPad, and displays the individual parts of a StaffPad Score, in realtime, across multiple devices. Any changes made to the score in StaffPad update instantly on every connected Reader. Annotations and playback work in perfect sync - all you need is a simple Wi-Fi connection.

Together, they form an extremely elegant, intuitive and powerful platform for composition and live performance.

Handwriting Recognition

StaffPad's unique algorithms convert your handwritten notation into a beautifully typeset score. It'll even help you by automatically correcting your stem directions, adding courtesy accidentals and highlighting when there's too many, or too few, beats in the bar.

Audio Staffs

Work seamlessly with audio and notation by recording or importing audio directly onto your score canvas. Edit with intuitive pen gestures; apply unique DSP effects; easily tempo map free-time audio; and let Adaptive Audio automatically keep everything in the right time and key for you.

Audio and notation live together on your score in perfect harmony.

Use your Pencil (or pen) to adjust hairpins, add articulations and symbols, select and move notes around,  copy/paste, flip stems, lengthen or shorten durations, transpose and much more -- all with just your pen and fingers.

writing music website

Using your Apple Pencil, or digital pen, you can  add a wide range of musical symbols into the score, with an intuitive flick to change the direction or type. For example, flick your pen up for an up-bow, or (you guessed it) down for a down-bow.

writing music website

StaffPad can generate realtime chord symbols for you at the flip of a switch. A dedicated Chord Staff allows for quick entry of chord symbols, or can generate chord symbols automatically from the harmonic content of the score.

Written dynamics are interpreted into a smart expression layer, which results in more realistic playback. You can customise this layer, as well as volume and pan, for more detailed mixing.

writing music website

StaffPad allows multiple versions of your score. This can be useful for trying out different edits or structures, or even for different movements. You can switch between versions easily with a tap.

StaffPad's Store contains world-class sounds from reknowned developers like Cinesamples, Orchestral Tools and Spitfire Audio. These StaffPad Editions are built exclusively for StaffPad and bring incredibly mockups within everyone's reach.

Elements are royalty free production sounds for use in your compositions. Drag them into your score from the Elements browser and they automatically adapt to your score's tempo and key.

 Amazing Playback

StaffPad can play your score back to you in wonderful detail, using the included  core library that features more than 55 instruments . Almost all instruments in the core library feature multiple layers of playing dynamics , repetition samples and recorded articulations like staccatos, trills, tremolos and pizzicatos.

But, we didn't stop there. We're proud to have partnered with some of the world's finest sample library developers , creating completely bespoke  StaffPad Editions of industry leading, professional libraries from our friends at Cinesamples ,    Orchestral Tools , Spitfire Audio  and others - with more to come.

For the first time, production-quality results are available straight from your score . Results that used to cost thousands, require high-end computers, an array of complex plugins, software, sequencers, and hours of work are now available by just pushing play . With StaffPad, you can just write music; not worry about technology.

This is truly remarkable progress .

Sound Presets

Sound Presets let you choose alternate playing styles or playback sound variations within the same instrument, whilst also creating a useful marking on the score. Swap easily between sounds with a tap.

writing music website

Divisi Staffs

Easily create an additional staff for any instrument. This allows for clearer divided part writing. StaffPad automatically formats the part to only sho w a dditional divisi staffs when there's music in them creating cleaner, more compact parts.

Mixer Effects

StaffPad features a unique suite of effects, which you can apply to both audio staffs and notation staffs, to raise the production bar on your compositions. Customise your effects rack with delay, reverb, compressor, chorus, EQ, rotary and unique staff-specific effects - all easily controlled with a simple slider.

Tempo Mapping

Sometimes, you don't want to record to a click or the audio you have doesn't have a clear or steady tempo. Yet, to add parts later, it will need to be tempo mapped. StaffPad makes this easy; add a tempo staff and just drag the bar lines to fit. Then, use Adaptive Audio to change the tempo, or lock it to a steady value.

StaffPad Reader is a groundbreaking digital music stand app for performers. It seamle ssly connects to StaffPad and displays individual parts, formatted for the screen. Any changes you make in StaffPad are shown instantly on all the connected Readers.

Press play in StaffPad, and all the Readers will play together in perfect sync . It cleverly turns the pages without any disruption, counts multi-rests , and can even provide each musician with their own count-in and synchronised click track.

Each performer can draw their own annotations , and they're recalled next time they see that score.

No more printing, taping and folding of parts. No one loses their place or misses a cue. Effortlessly make corrections, changes or try out new ideas. No boring setup, links or accounts. Just write and play. Even better? It's free.

writing music website

Music is better together.

It's time to put paper scores in the t rash . To reinvent sheet music for the digital age, we had to go back to the start. A truly useful digital music stand app should be simple to use, always up-to-date, and help the musician to achieve the best performance. It should remove obstacles, complexity and anxiety.

No more expensive printing bills, laborious taping of paper, or last minute formatting panics. No complex file management, passwords, accounts or shared folders to worry about. No more file conversion issues. No more missed cues. No more awkward page turns.

This is digital music notation as it's meant to be done. StaffPad and StaffPad Reader form the perfect partnership for anyone who wants to make music with anyone else.

And isn't that what it's all about?

No pr oblem.

Fix a note, transpose the score, write an entirely new section, delete a section... do whatever you want to do; StaffPad and StaffPad Reader will do it together, in perfect sync.

StaffPad streams any changes you make to your score to every connected Reader, which update the layout in realtime.

 Let's play. Together.

StaffPad Readers play in perfect sync with StaffPad. Each musician can see exactly where they are in the score, get a synchronised metronome and even a  count-in  to make sure no one misses a beat.

As you reach the end of the first page, the Reader seamlessly peeks the first few lines from the next page over the top. This means you can always read comfortably ahead, and never worry about awkward page turns again.

Go Pro for more features

All of the above functionality is free.

However, you ca n upgrade your Reader at any time to access additional features and functionality .

Full score playback from the StaffPad Core Library allows you to hear the score in full detail; solo your part to hear it through, or mute your part to play along with the rest of the virtual band. Perfect for practicing.

Dark Mode  saves your eyes (and light bleed) in darker rooms like concert halls or theatre pits.

R eader ScoreSync lets you sync any score you import to your Reader with other Readers on the Wi-Fi network - without StaffPad. Perfect for smaller rehearsals where you don't need the ability to make changes to the music.

View the full conductor's score. Useful for teaching, booth reading, or conducting using the Reader without StaffPad.

 Compatibility

StaffPad for iPad requires Apple Pencil.

StaffPad for Windows requires a device that supports active pen and touch.

We recommend the iPad Pro 12.9" or Microsoft Surface Pro for StaffPad. However, it will work on all modern iPads and pen/touch capable Windows devices, including the following:

iPad Pro (all models)

iPad Air (3rd or 4th generation)

iPad mini (5th generation)

iPad (6th generation or later)

You can read, open and preview scores on all new Apple Silicon Macs. Due to the lack of touch/Pencil support, writing notation is not possible.

Microsoft Surface Pro (all models)

Microsoft Surface Book (all models)

Microsoft Surface Pro X

Microsoft Surface Studio (all models)

Microsoft Surface Hub

Microsoft Surface Go

We recommend Microsoft Surface, but any Windows device that supports active pen and touch will work with StaffPad

Frequently Asked Questions

What do i need to use staffpad.

Either an iPad with Apple Pencil, or a modern Windows device that supports pen (Windows Ink) and touch.

IMPORTANT: For StaffPad, Apple Pencil/Windows Pen support is required!

As of March 2019, all new iPads sold support Apple Pencil, and are compatible with StaffPad.

For iPad, we recommend using the latest generation iPad Pro.

Only Apple Pencil and official active/Windows Ink compatible pens are supported. The Logitech Crayon is not supported on iPad.  Capacitive styluses (i.e with large rubber tips) are not supported.

For Windows, we recommend using Microsoft Surface devices, such as the Surface Pro.

What do I need to use StaffPad Reader?

StaffPad Reader will work with any iPad running iPadOS or later, and any Windows device.

There is no Pencil/pen requirement for StaffPad Reader, although they're nice to have for annotations!

Is StaffPad available for Android?

No, not at this time.

Where do I get StaffPad?

StaffPad is available on the App Store for iPadOS, and in the Microsoft Store app, for Windows devices.

Can the Reader open MIDI or MusicXML files?

No. The Reader is designed to work exclusively with StaffPad files, and is built to display them perfectly every time. There's far too much variation in raw MusicXML or MIDI files to guarantee a readable and usable score.

Instead, you can import MIDI and MusicXML into StaffPad, tidy up and edit as you need, then export as a StaffPad file to open on the Reader. Or, of course, just use ScoreSync to display the score across Readers with one tap of a button.

Can the Reader edit the music at all?

No. The Reader is exactly that -- a Reader. You can transpose, edit, write new music and do whatever you want to it using StaffPad itself. The Reader has no editing capabilities beyond making ink annotations.

Do I lose my annotations when the Reader disconnects?

Not at all! Your annotations are saved locally on your device. The next time you encounter that score via ScoreSync, all your annotations will be restored.

The Reader does not save the score itself. It only saves your annotations and retrieves them when you see that score again in the future.

How do I get a refund or pay with a different method?

The App Store (iOS) or the Microsoft Store (Windows) are repsonsible for handling all billing enquiries, including refunds.

App Stores work as distributors: you're buying the app from Apple or Microsoft (not from us). As such, as we have no record of your purchase, or any data from you.

Please contact the respective app store support teams for any enquiries regarding  purchase, billing issues, invoices or refunds.

Is StaffPad available in my language?

StaffPad is only available in English. We hope to bring more languages to the app in the near future.

Does ScoreSync require an internet connection?

StaffPad requires that all devices use the same local Wi-Fi network. However, it  does not require an internet connection. Your score is kept locally within the network, not uploaded to the internet or stored in the cloud or anything like that. We recommend using a fast router or a mesh router system if you're using many Readers in a large venue (i.e a concert hall space).

I've got a new device. Do I have to buy the app again?

You can redownload the app as many times as you like, as long as you're downloading the app to a new device that you own, of the same platform.

It isn't possible to download the Windows version on iPad, and vice-versa. Apple and Windows operate different App Stores, and as such there is no migration possible between them.

To redownload the app on your platform, just make sure you're logged into the App Store or Microsoft Store with the same credentials as you used to get the app before, and it will show up in your Apple or Microsoft account (with any other purchases you've made from them) so that you can redownload easily.

If I buy StaffPad on one platform, do I get it free on the other?

No - Microsoft and Apple operate different platforms, and different stores. There isn't a way for us to migrate users from one platform to another, or provide any kind of discount between stores.

The 9 Best Sheet Music Maker Apps for Writing Music

Are you the next Mozart? Want to pen the next global hit for your band? Use these sheet music maker apps!

Are you the next Mozart? Do you want to pen the next global hit for your band? Perhaps you're trying to get your head around music theory? If so, you need some sheet music maker apps to help you write sheet music anywhere and everywhere.

Things have moved on a bit since the days of Mozart. You no longer have to make your own sheet music by candlelight with a quill; you can create it all digitally using sheet music maker apps. And these are the best tools to write sheet music.

1. MuseScore

Available on: Windows, Mac, and Linux

MuseScore is a standalone app, which means you'll need to download and install the software. It's open-source and free to use. In our opinion, it's the best app on this list, but your perception may differ depending on your usage requirements.

The app possesses all the essential ingredients you'd want from sheet music software. There's support for unlimited staves, your compositions can have unlimited lengths, you can boost its power using plug-ins, and it all looks fantastic.

While it lacks some of the advanced features you'll find in paid apps like Sibelius and Finale, it is more than adequate for most users.

Additional features include user-defined keyboard shortcuts and the ability to drag note modifiers and performance markings.

2. BlankSheetMusic

blanksheetmusic example page

Available on: Web

If MuseScore rivals expensive paid apps in terms of features, BlankSheetMusic is at the other end of the scale.

It's a simple sheet music writer that lets you add some basic musical symbols to blank sheets and print them. You cannot add your own notes. If you want to print off reams of music sheets to write on manually, this is the best tool.

Related: Free Music Generators to Make Your Own Music and Songs

You do have some limited options to play with. You can add a range of clefs, tabs, and staffs, and adjust your paper size, margins, and orientation. When you're ready, just click the giant Print icon in the bottom right-hand corner.

3. LilyPond

lilypond music app

LilyPond is the brainchild of two musicians who wanted to create "beautiful" sheet music. As such, the app focuses on style as much as substance and has become one of the leading sheet music creators.

Unlike some of the other apps in this list, LilyPond does not rely on a drag-and-drop interface for adding notes and musical symbols. Instead, it uses text input; it's more akin to a programming language. The app might take some getting used to if you've spent a lot of time working with more traditional sheet music tools.

The best thing about using text files for your music is that they're future-proof. They're harder to corrupt, and you'll always be able to open them—even if the parent software eventually dies.

musink sheet music app

Available on: Windows

Musink lets you create sheet music and MIDI files.
