Massive Comcast Xfinity outage disconnects TV and internet across the US
So far there’s no word on what is causing the issues.
By Richard Lawler , a senior editor following news across tech, culture, policy, and entertainment. He joined The Verge in 2021 after several years covering news at Engadget.
This morning many Comcast Xfinity subscribers woke up without their usual services. Reports indicate the system was down, or at least unsteady, in areas stretching from Chicago to Philadelphia, New Jersey, and South Carolina. Looking at DownDetector , issues had been reported earlier in the Bay Area, but it’s unclear if those are connected to the problems people saw this morning.
Comcast has released a statement regarding the outage. According to a spokesperson, “Earlier, some customers experienced intermittent service disruptions as a result of a network issue. We have addressed the issue and service is now restoring for impacted customers, as we continue to investigate the root cause. We apologize to those who were affected.” It appears that most of the people who reported problems have confirmed they’re back online. There’s still no word on exactly what caused the problem or how many people were impacted at its peak.
A message on the company’s outage status page (if you could reach it, which many people couldn’t) noted an issue and said it would be resolved at 10:49AM ET, without revealing why it had such a specific timeline. Customers trying to reach phone support reported only getting a dial tone or error message in response.
Some people, like me, were able to get online this morning without an issue while using Comcast’s cable internet, but the number of reports from home and business customers alike shows the issue was widespread.
Disclosure: Comcast is an investor in Vox Media, The Verge’s parent company.
Update November 9th, 12:29PM ET: Added tweet from @XfinitySupport noting the issue has been addressed and updated article accordingly.

Comcast outage —
Comcast admits “widespread” outage as tens of thousands of users report problems, large outages reported in chicago, philadelphia, new jersey, and san francisco..
Jon Brodkin - Nov 9, 2021 4:34 pm UTC
There appears to be a widespread Comcast outage affecting customers in multiple parts of the country this morning. News reports have described large outages in Chicago , Philadelphia, and southern New Jersey. "Xfinity's own outage tracker is currently down, displaying the error message: 'We are experiencing abnormal traffic to our network or… the service or servers on it are not currently available,'" The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote .
There were also reports of a large Comcast outage in the San Francisco Bay Area last night, leading to a message from the Marin County Sheriff's office that said, "Please do not call 911 to ask why your Internet is out. Call your Internet service provider." That outage may be resolved, as "Comcast tells NBC Bay Area late Monday its systems show Xfinity services are starting to come back online following widespread Internet outages across the Bay Area," the news site reported . Comcast outages in other regions are ongoing.
54,000 reports on Downdetector
Downdetector, which lets users of many types of services report outages, showed about 54,000 reports for Comcast Xfinity around 9 am ET this morning. Downdetector also showed about 25,000 reports eight hours previously, at the time of the Bay Area outage.
There are always some Downdetector reports about Comcast because of its sheer size, as the company has over 31.5 million residential customers in 39 states and the District of Columbia. But 25,000 and 54,000 Downdetector reports are both unusually high numbers. Charter Spectrum, which has nearly as many residential customers as Comcast, had 835 reports on Downdetector at about 9 am ET today.
Downdetector's " heat map " for Comcast shows that in the past 24 hours, the biggest number of outage reports came from the San Francisco Bay Area:
Of course, not everyone whose Comcast service is out will complain on Downdetector or Twitter, so there could be many other people without Internet, TV, or phone service. We asked Comcast for information on how extensive the outage is, what caused it, and when it will be resolved. We'll update this article if we get any new details.
Update at 12:30pm ET : Comcast provided a statement indicating that people's service should be restored shortly, but said it is still trying to figure out what caused the outage. "Earlier, some customers experienced intermittent service disruptions as a result of a network issue," Comcast said. "We have addressed the issue and service is now restoring for impacted customers, as we continue to investigate the root cause. We apologize to those who were affected."

Xfinity Outage
Xfinity customers, here’s what to do if you’re having internet or cable TV issues.
Share | Dec 7, 2022
Is Xfinity down or is it just me?
Xfinity cable TV or internet outages typically happen when Comcast’s network goes down, but equipment problems can sometimes look like network problems. If you’re stuck staring at a blank TV or computer screen, check your Xfinity equipment before calling Xfinity customer service .
Xfinity equipment issues
Xfinity network outage issues, how to confirm an xfinity outage, what to do during an xfinity outage.
Tired of outages?
Enter your zip code below to find a more reliable provider.
Your TV or home internet equipment might be causing service problems if they’re working at less-than-peak condition. If you’re experiencing any of these scenarios, you might be experiencing hardware problems instead of an Xfinity outage:
- Your Wi-Fi connection keeps dropping or has a weak signal
- You get a steady TV signal, but your picture looks off
- The lights on your modem, router, or TV box remain lit and aren’t flashing
In these situations, your TV or internet equipment just might need a tune-up. Check out our Xfinity troubleshooting guide for some TV and internet support tips.
If your TV or internet connection is completely out, the problem is likely on Comcast’s end. Along with losing your TV or internet service, these signs point towards an Xfinity outage:
- Modem, router, or TV box have flashing error lights
- Neighborhood has severe weather conditions like a power outage
If you’re encountering these problems, reach out to Xfinity customer support to confirm if there’s an outage in your area.
If you’re still experiencing service problems after checking all of your Xfinity equipment cables, use the following resources to confirm that Xfinity has a service outage in your area.
Xfinity outage map
Xfinity’s Outage Map lists local outages in your area and includes estimated repair times. You can access the map on Xfinity’s Status Center or with the Xfinity My Account mobile app (available on Google Play or the App Store ).
Call Xfinity customer service
Xfinity’s callback service lets you schedule a phone call with an Xfinity customer support agent and avoid having to stay on hold all day. Xfinity also has in-person chat support every day between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. ET and a support account on Twitter.
Get Xfinity text notifications
Text OUT to 266278 for Xfinity outage notifications via text message. For text alerts, your phone number needs to be registered to your Xfinity account .
There’s not much you can do during an Xfinity outage except wait for Comcast technicians to finish restoring TV or internet service. But while you’re sitting by candlelight or working through the Sunday crossword, you can still use some Xfinity services.
Use your smartphone as a hotspot
Depending on your smartphone brand and plan, you might be able to use the phone as a mobile hotspot to connect computers or tablets to the internet.
Mobile data speeds won’t be as fast as your home internet service, but they’re a workable backup during a power outage. Make sure your smartphone plan covers hotspot usage to ensure you won’t get hit with overage fees.
Watch TV shows on the Xfinity Stream app
If your Xfinity TV service is out during a power outage, you can still use the Xfinity Stream app to watch on-demand movies or TV shows. Check out our full Xfinity Stream review to learn more about the app.
Connect to an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot
For fast Wi-Fi internet access, Comcast customers who aren’t on a prepaid plan can connect to a neighborhood Xfinity hotspot. Visit our Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots guide to learn more about the service and find your nearest hotspot.
Once you’ve determined whether your Xfinity equipment is on the fritz or you’re part of a widespread outage, you can take steps to correct your network connection.
If you’ve got equipment troubles, our Xfinity troubleshooting guide can help. During an internet outage, you can use your smartphone as a hotspot. If it’s only a TV outage, this will be a great time to try out Xfinity Stream to watch your favorite shows online.
Xfinity outage FAQ

AT&T Resets Millions of Passcodes After Customer Records Are Leaked
Nearly eight million customers and 65.4 million former account holders were affected by the data breach, the company said.
By Aimee Ortiz
The telecommunications giant AT&T announced on Saturday that it had reset the passcodes of 7.6 million customers after it determined that compromised customer data was “released on the dark web.”
“Our internal teams are working with external cybersecurity experts to analyze the situation,” AT&T said . “To the best of our knowledge, the compromised data appears to be from 2019 or earlier and does not contain personal financial information or call history.”
The company said that “information varied by customer and account,” but that it may have included a person’s full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, Social Security number, date of birth, AT&T account number and passcode.
In addition to those 7.6 million customers, 65.4 million former account holders were also affected.
The company said it would be “reaching out to individuals with compromised sensitive personal information separately and offering complimentary identity theft and credit monitoring services.”
AT&T said it reset the passcodes for those affected and directed customers to a site with details about how to reset them. It also said that it was starting a “robust investigation supported by internal and external cybersecurity experts.”
A company representative did not address specific questions about how the breach happened or why it went unnoticed for so long.
TechCrunch, which first reported on the passcode reset , said it informed AT&T on Monday that “the leaked data contained encrypted passcodes that could be used to access AT&T customer accounts.”
TechCrunch said it delayed publishing its article until the company “could begin resetting customer account passcodes.”
In its report, TechCrunch said that “this is the first time that AT&T has acknowledged that the leaked data belongs to its customers, some three years after a hacker claimed the theft of 73 million AT&T customer records.”
AT&T had previously denied a breach of its systems but how the leak happened was unclear, TechCrunch reported.
AT&T said that it did not know whether the leaked data “originated from AT&T or one of its vendors” and that it “does not have evidence of unauthorized access to its systems resulting in theft of the data set.”
The episode comes after AT&T customers experienced a widespread outage last month that temporarily cut off connections for users across the United States for several hours. The Feb. 22 outage affected customer in cities including Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York.
At its peak, there were around 70,000 reports of disrupted service for the wireless carrier, according to Downdetector.com , which tracks user reports of telecommunication and internet disruptions.
A few days later, AT&T offered customers affected by the outage a $5 credit in an effort to “make it right.”

Russian City Freezes After Electricity Fails
A power outage in Russia's Siberia region left almost half of the city of Omsk without power amid subzero temperatures.
Vladimir Shnipko, Omsk's minister of energy and housing and communal services said there was an emergency shutdown at the Tavricheskaya substation. On Wednesday at around 5 p.m. local time, the lights suddenly went out in several areas of Omsk, including in both central regions of the city, and in rural areas, local media reported.
There have been large-scale power outages nationwide since the new year, leaving Russians to grapple with freezing temperatures as authorities work to restore heat to homes. Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk in Siberia.
Omsk's regional governor, Vitaly Khotsenko, said that power has been restored in the Lyubinsky, Sargatsky, Tarsky and Ust-Ishimsky municipal districts of the region. "Energy workers continue to work," he said.
Local authorities were cited by Russia's state-run news agency as saying that most consumers who received electricity from the Tavricheskaya substation had their power restored within 30 minutes.
"The power supply to consumers of the 500 kV Tavricheskaya substation was completely restored in less than two hours. Most of it was powered within half an hour. The emergency automatics were activated at the substation. There was no damage to the equipment of the power facility," the news agency was told.
Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's minister of internal affairs, shared a video on X, formerly Twitter , purportedly showing Omsk in darkness amid the power outage.
"Russians are ready to freeze without electricity and heat but continue supporting Putin and the 'special military operation'," he wrote, referring to the Kremlin's term for its ongoing war in Ukraine.
Newsweek has contacted Russia's foreign ministry for comment by email.
Elsewhere, approximately 25 percent of Moscow region was affected by power outages this week after a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow on January.
Affected areas included the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites showed.
Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.
