Handy Places to Find Content Writing Jobs. Makealivingwriting.com

Ask your network. Send cold-pitch emails. Make phone calls. Try direct mail. Connect with agencies. Marketing is the name of the game, especially when you’re starting out.

These are proven marketing strategies to find prospects and get hired for content writing jobs. The more prospects you reach out to, the closer you get to your goals to move up, earn more, and make a living writing.

Looking for another way to find freelance work?

It’s no secret that trolling Craigslist for content writing jobs or putting all your bets on Upwork to find great clients aren’t the best ways to build your freelance writing business .

But there are some online resources you’ll want to add to your toolbox.

If you want to get hired, grow your network, and build your portfolio of freelance work, check out these handy places to get hired online.

Finding your own clients to pitch freelance writing services will almost always win out over content mills, bidding sites, and job boards.

But there are some online resources worth checking out to help you:

  • Identify clients in your niche
  • See who’s hiring freelancers
  • Find out what type of content writing jobs are in demand
  • Fill a gap as a temporary writer until a full-time position is filled
  • Get hired for a freelance assignment or long-term contract

Tip: Don’t ignore listings for full-time writing jobs. Find a writing job in your niche that looks like a good fit, except for the 9-5 part? Reach out to the editor or marketing director with a letter of introduction. It’s a great way to land a temporary contract until they hire a full-time employee, which can take months at larger organizations.

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means at no extra cost to you, we may earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

Want to know a little secret about the Junk Free Job Board inside the Freelance Writers Den? A few of the job listings come from FlexJobs. In fact, FlexJobs is one of our favorite freelance writing job boards . (Editor’s note: The Freelance Writers Den no longer includes a job board because so few jobs met our minimum requirements.)

It’s a paid service that complies thousands of online listings for freelance writing jobs and other remote work. (You’ll get 30% off with Code: FLEXLIFE , thanks to our special hookup with them.)

Tip: You can search the listings without handing over your email address or paying for the service. Use the Advanced Search feature , add a keyword from your niche, and choose a category like Writing, Marketing, or News & Journalism. If you want to see all the details, you’ll need a subscription.

When an editor or marketing director needs a writer, chances are pretty good they’re going to ask their “peeps” first. So how do you get on an editor’s radar?

That’s the foundation for CloudPeeps, created to match freelance writers with companies like Airbnb, Virgin America airlines, Lyft, Zappos, and many others.

Is it just another place that pays cheap rates for content writing jobs? You decide. Clients expect to pay freelancers $60 to $100 per hour or $100 to $250 per blog post.

The Freelance Writing job board gets a virtual fist bump for being an online resource for writers longer any others on this list. Since 1997, like when the Internet was still pretty new. Their staff compiles freelance writing jobs to keep the list going.

Companies can also use the site to find writers. Some of the most recent listings include jobs for blog writing, case studies, copywriting, and more.

Tip : Check the “Remote” box on the left when you search the list to filter out the full-time jobs. And be selective. You’ll find some writing opportunities here that pay professional rates. But others don’t…just a reminder that the best content writing jobs are usually the ones not advertised.

What’s it like to work for company X? If you want to get some insight about a potential freelance writing client, Glassdoor is a good place to look.

But it’s not just a place for employees to post glowing reviews or less-than-happy employees to dish out the dirt. Glassdoor is also a place where employers are looking for freelancers to write blog posts, articles, case studies, white papers, marketing-funnel content, and more.

Here’s an example: A basic search under the Jobs tab for “freelance writer” returned a list of about 1,300 writing jobs. Refine your search, and you’ll be able to sift though the list to find content writing jobs in your niche.

Indeed.com showed up on the Interwebs 14 years ago as a recruiting and job search tool. It didn’t take long for Indeed to outperform it’s competitor, Monster.com (which once paid $4 million for a series of Super Bowl ads).

At the time, most of those writing jobs were for the 9-to-5-sit-in-a-cubicle kind. But that’s changing in today’s freelance economy .

Tip: A quick search for “freelance writer” on Indeed turns up 700-plus content writing jobs for media companies, digital marketing agencies, and staffing services searching for the right freelancer to fill contract assignments.

Looking for assignments writing for newspapers, magazines, and media organizations?

That’s what you’ll primarily find at JournalismJobs, which was founded in 1998 by former Washington Post writer and editor Dan Rohn.

Tip 1 : When you search for freelance work here, use the “Job Type” tab on the left to narrow your search to “freelance” and “telecommute” opportunities.

Tip 2: Also, if you’re looking for an easy way to get a clip, pitch a local story idea to a newspaper in your community. Sad but true…most operate with a shoestring staff and work with freelancers.

If you’re going spend any time checking out these online resources to find content writing jobs, use LinkedIn.

As a freelance writer, it’s by far the best place online to network with people in your niche, connect with editors and marketing directors, and find freelance work.

Take the time to develop and improve your LinkedIn profile as a niche freelance writer. When you optimize your LinkedIn profile, you make it a lot easier for an editor or marketing director to find you. Plus, LinkedIn will recommend job searches based on your profile to save you time.

Before you jump into the search bar on Media Bistro, take a look at the Resources tab at the top of the page. You’ll find useful tips about how to pitch story ideas to a long list of niche, trade, and consumer magazines.

MediaBistro launched way back in 1999, and it’s carved out a niche as a place where companies can find media professionals. That’s good news for freelancers.

When you search for content writing jobs here, you’ll find publishing companies, digital marketing agencies representing Fortune 500 companies, and media outlets in need of your skills.

Tip:  Check the “Working from home” box to narrow your search to freelance or remote work.

When Darren Rowse stumbled upon this foreign concept called “blogging” back in 2002, he decided to start a blog to write about stuff like pop culture and spirituality. And he became obsessed with blogging, online writing and driving traffic.

That’s basically how ProBlogger started. The site includes a lot of resources for freelance writers and bloggers, including the ProBlogger job board.

Tip:  After sifting through the latest listings, there’s a mix of content writings jobs that pay respectable rates (like $300 per blog post on personal finance topics), and others that don’t.

Here’s a FlexJobs competitor. It works pretty much the same way.

At Virtual Vocations, real people sift through thousands of online jobs to create a searchable database where you can find remote work, including content writing jobs.

You can search for freelance work and see what’s out there for free, but you’ll need a paid subscription to see all the details.

“Our job board is 100 percent hand screened,” says Virtual Vocations Public Relations Director Michelle Rawlings. “Every opening we post gets human eyes on it, and is looked at again by our team in 30 days for review.”

Tip: Search by title like “freelance writer” or click on one of the categories like “Writing,” “Creative,” or “Marketing,” to see what’s available. Then use the “Telecommute” filter on the left to narrow your search.

If you want to build a successful freelance writing business, you’ll need to market like crazy…at least at first. Job boards can be one way to find potential clients. Just keep in mind that the best content writing jobs are usually the ones not advertised.

Where do you find content writing jobs online? Let’s discuss in the comments below.

Turn Passion Into Profession

8. Become a work-from-home game tester

Does the idea of getting paid to test new games and report bugs in them seem like a dream job ? Then becoming a work-from-home game tester may be the best way for students who love gaming to earn money online without investment.

Online gaming or esports has been thriving during the pandemic with as many as 360 million Indians jumping on the bandwagon in 2020, up 20% from 2019.

Experts expect the esports industry to reach INR 11 billion by 2025. Over 90% of Indian students now believe that gaming is a viable career option.

A work-at-home game tester job is like a dream come true for students who love gaming. This is one of the cool, fun jobs for teens that’s high on the ‘dream jobs for teens’ list.

But can you really get paid to test video games? Are the “get paid to be a video game tester” jobs a scam? You’ll be happy to know that being a work-from-home game tester is quite a legitimate way for students to earn money online from home.

The reason is that game development companies want to know if their game is exciting and fun to play. They know that a boring game or one that is full of bugs will never sell well, so they need gamers to test their game by playing it a few times.

Game development companies need user feedback on their new games so can avoid creating a boring game or one with too many bugs by having gamers test it before the release.

As an online game tester, you’ll be required to go over different components of a game and look for things that don’t make sense. You would also have to “break the game” – which means doing things a normal user would do and reporting when you see something go wrong.

But being a video game tester doesn’t mean you get paid to just sit around and play games all day. Although game testing may seem like a way to find easy online jobs for teens, game testers are very much like quality control personnel who provide detailed reviews and feedback on games.

You have to give the video game companies detailed feedback on the new game that you’ve just tested. Usually, this will be in the form of a survey that you fill out after playing the game, with questions like how fun or exciting the game was and whether you liked the graphics.

But the primary function of game testing is finding and reporting software defects or bugs, so you must also know how to write a bug report . Besides a passion for gaming, you will also need some IT and analytical skills to be good at this job.

So how much do video game companies usually pay to have their games tested? Normally, companies pay from $9, all the way up to $80 for a single game testing (although it can vary a lot).

Your earnings will depend on the company, the importance of the game to the company, how much time you spend on the game you’re testing, and how long or detailed the follow-up survey or bug report is.

You’ll also require access to the latest gaming technology and may require an understanding of computer programming and software development for some QA tester jobs.

While becoming an online game tester is a genuine way to earn money from home in India for students, it is not one of the easy jobs for teens online that most people think it is.

To get a job as a work-from-home game tester you’ll need to pass an assessment. You can get technical training as a game tester by interning at gaming companies and participating in public beta tests.

The best part is that anybody 15 years old and up can apply to be a video game tester, but you need to have some gaming experience and know the basics of playing before you start applying for these jobs.

As most video game developers prefer to test games in-house, it’s not that easy to find a video game tester job or find gaming jobs online. It’s best to approach the company directly and find out if they are looking for beta testers as not all of these online game tester jobs are advertised.

Besides earning money as an online game tester, you can also sign up as a usability tester and get paid for using and reviewing online products at home on freelance websites like RemoteHub where companies go to validate their ideas and new products by placing them in the hands of real users.

If you love gaming, another way to earn money from home for students in India is to download money-earning apps that pay you to play games and earn some pocket money playing games on these apps.

11. Find transcription work-from-home jobs

Transcription is the conversion of a spoken language source into written or printed form. A transcription service provider is one who converts the spoken word to a type-written format. There are various companies that provide these services to their customers.

With the growth of podcasting and video content, many of the best transcription sites have started to hire freelancers for transcription jobs. Transcription involves converting audio to text by listening to the audio and typing it out.

Transcribers are required by vloggers, podcasters, and other content creators who are producing internet audio at stupendous rates and need it transcribed so they can repurpose it to develop information products, create fresh, original website content and courses.

You don’t need any special equipment to find transcription work-from-home jobs, except for a working computer (usually one with Google Chrome), a good pair of headphones, and a reliable internet connection.

But being an excellent transcriber – one that actually gets hired for work-from-home jobs without investment – requires much more than the ability to listen and type.

Even an experienced transcription service provider will have to listen four times before transcribing clear audio. Depending on how fast and accurately you type, you could transcribe an audio hour in about two to three hours.

A transcription service provider’s job is to punctuate the speech rightly, make sense of what is said and use the homophones (words that sound similar but are spelt differently) correctly.

The important thing for any transcription service is editing, where grammar and all mispronounced words are corrected by highly skilled and experienced transcriptionists who review, proofread and verify the transcription to ensure accuracy.

Quality and efficient transcription services are essential in many businesses and professions, such as medical and or legal professions. As a regular student, you can apply for general transcription jobs that require a basic knowledge of English.

If you’re a medical student or law student, you can apply for medical transcription or legal transcription jobs that require specific knowledge and understanding of medical and legal terms.

If you have good design skills and can learn website design, you can find online web design jobs for students. Developing websites does take some skill, but once you become familiar with the tools of the trade, even a newbie can start building websites for other people.

Although the field of website design doesn’t pay as much as it used to and the competition is fierce, website development jobs for students are legitimate online jobs.

If you need to get some experience before offering web design services on your own, you can work as a web design intern with a web design company and learn the skills you’ll need to build websites and keep your clients happy .

The benefit of being a website designer is that you can work from home and make more money than you would earn working full-time for an employer, and if you’re good at it, you’ll find more than enough web design gigs to live comfortably.

You can find web design work on the top freelance websites or by promoting your web design services on business and marketing forums where your potential clients hang out. If you can create stunning and creative website designs for small businesses, many of your clients will come back to you again and again.

You can leverage your client loyalty to earn a regular income by offering monthly or yearly website maintenance packages. Some of the most popular and profitable website design niches are:

  • WordPress web design
  • Ecommerce design
  • Shopify web design
  • Small business website design
  • Mobile web design
  • UI/UX web design

Your brand and reputation are important when offering web design services. If you don’t create high-quality, well-designed, responsive web designs that are up to the latest standards, you won’t get much business. Create a portfolio to showcase your web design work, so you can brand yourself online.

Whether you’re a beginner or are experienced at website design and development, you’ll need to develop an understanding of the software used to design websites or work with a partner who does.

It’s good to do some free or low-cost web design, UI/UX design, and SEO courses to learn new skills so you can compete in the freelance marketplace. Learn how to price your work properly as you’ll be exchanging your time for money.

Asking clients for half the payment in advance will protect you in the event the client refuses to pay after the project is completed. It’s always better to accept gigs on freelance marketplaces where funds are kept in escrow, as they ensure you get paid once the client has expressed their satisfaction with the work done.

Top Career Domains to Venture into After Class 10th: Streams, Qualifications, Salaries [Updated Guide 2024]

Dec 20, 2023 2.1K Reads

While pursuing further education after class 10 th is one of the most commonly pursued academic pathways, the trend is quickly shifting with the rising importance being given to hands-on skills and professional experience for career scope. As a result, many students are now turning to professional options and careeristic upskilling courses to start a career soon after completing their senior secondary education.

If you are an aspirant looking for some of the options to kickstart your career right after class 10 th , then you can find detailed answers to all your questions, whether it be the stream you should go ahead with for starting your career, government job roles available right after class 10 th or the careers in offbeat domains that you can consider venturing into.

So continue reading to find out more about the best career options to go for post class 10 th education!

What to do after Class 10 th : Educational & Vocational Pathways to Consider

If you are someone who is wondering about pursuing a career right after class 10 th , you might be perplexed with the question about whether going for higher education or starting a job is the right choice.

Since your academic and career decisions constitute one of the most important irreversible decisions of your life, you must consider all the prospective pros and cons of going for higher education or going for a career option. Some of them have been listed below.

Pros & Cons of Pursuing Higher Education After 10 th

Pursuing higher education in the form of higher secondary schooling (i.e. class 11 th and class 12 th education) followed by graduation is the most common trajectory pursued by Indian students after completing class 10. This academic pathway forms a strong base for foundational knowledge in a given domain, since education up to class 10 th focuses on basic primary education without providing advanced learning in any specific domain. Post class 10 th education, students get the opportunity of choosing a subject stream, with the prominent options in India being humanities, commerce or science. Thus, higher education in school and at the college levels is indeed a compelling option for developing a sound basis for a career in the long run.

Summarised below are a few of the pros of pursuing further education after completing your class 10 th education:

  • Pursuing higher secondary education after class 10 th allows for specialised knowledge building in the domain of science, humanities or commerce to students.
  • Pursuing further education helps to build a foundation for a specific career since it provides a direction in which to explore further studies and job options, which is not available up till class 10 th education.
  • Since further education in class 11 th and class 12 th followed by graduation garners specific skills and competencies to students, it offers better career opportunities than those that can be garnered after class 10 th .

The cons of going for higher education after class 10 th include those mentioned below.

  • Pursuing higher education after class 10 th is a time-taking process, requiring the investment of at least 5 years (2 years for higher secondary studies followed by 3 years of undergraduate studies) which can be unfeasible for those looking to start garnering hands-on professional experience right from class 10 th .
  • Further, if a student has some further constraints such as financial limitations or other personal commitments requiring them to take up a professional role, then investing the financial resources and time into higher education may become a cumbersome process for such students.
  • Those students who wish to acquire the maximum years of professional experience to heighten their future educational opportunities for a better career, may not be able to do so if they invest their time into further education over years.

Pros & Cons of Pursuing a Career Option After 10 th

While pursuing further education comes with its limitations and pros, the option of going for a career right after class 10 th education is also a choice requiring sufficient consideration of its pros and cons, a few of which we have enlisted below.

Find mentioned below a few of the pros that you can benefit from if you choose to go for a career after class 10 th :

  • Firstly, choosing a career right after class 10 th can provide you a great advantage of entering the workforce early on in your career journey. It can provide you with invaluable field experience, which is considered quite essential for career escalation in recent times.
  • Furthermore, venturing early on into the field of a professional career allows you to gain years of work experience which can be quite helpful for growing your professional skills and competencies.
  • Going for a career right after class 10 th can allow a student financial independence as well as meet any financial commitments that they might have. Considering that a large number of students often take up a job after class 10 th to support financial constraints, it is one of the biggest advantages of going for a career after class 10 th .
  • Lastly, another great advantage of venturing into professional fields early into your career journey is that you get a vast time period to explore all your career options, and find your calling and area of aptitude. This kind of trial and error decision may be tough to take if you choose to pursue a career after Bachelor’s or Masters.

A few of the cons of taking up a career after class 10 th include those mentioned below:

  • Pursuing a career after class 10 th only allows the student to explore menial or entry level career options considering that education up to class 10 th only provides basic primary learning to students.
  • The salaries and compensation one is likely to get after class 10 th , especially if they want to venture into the private sector, are limited as only low to moderate salaries within the range of INR 2 to INR 3 LPA are offered to professionals with senior secondary level of education.
  • Further, the scope of career escalation and career mobility is constrained manifold if you venture into the professional field without going for further education or upskilling. Especially in the long run, without due upskilling and qualification can limit the long-term prospects that one can garner.

Hence, while deciding whether to go for a career opportunity right after class 10 th or pursue higher education, you need to take into account the pros and cons of each of the options to make an informed decision. There are limits to going for a job opportunity after completing senior secondary education, but it also comes with a number of advantages and practical solutions for students with varying financial and personal needs and goals.
