Bristol Writers Group
Welcome to the Bristol Writers Group website.
Please take a look around and find out more about us.
Our website is here to provide introductory information if you are looking for a creative writing workshop to join, as well as providing tools for current members .
To get the most from the group you need to be living in Bristol, otherwise we have found that travel becomes cumbersome. Also, we meet to critique each week in a different place – all over Bristol – which may be a consideration for you if you do not drive.
BWG is an informal group and we are always happy to hear from prospective new members who are committed to writing, and giving and receiving critiques , on a regular basis. If you just want to follow us, you can register as a subscriber to our blog .
Thanks for stopping by.
Here are details of publications from the Bristol Writers Group. These include projects that group members have collaborated on, some for the benefit of the local community.
Hidden Bristol
Stories of ghosts, tales of riots, anecdotes of love and legends of lost and forgotten Bristol. This anthology is the perfect companion to our evening of Thunderbolt Tales.
Ashton Walks
Five loosely linked short stories inspired by a walk in the Somerset countryside to the west of Bristol. This work grew out of an idea of writing a set of connected stories. We wanted to do something new, having already published on the themes of Hair and, unsurprisingly, Hidden Bristol .
One of our members, Terry Stew, inspired us to take a walk in the country and use our experiences to create short stories. And as a bonus they will all get a performance at the 2012 Bristol Festival of Literature .
Not long ago a group of poets, writers and slammers gathered together in St Andrew’s, Bristol, for ShedFest, probably Europe’s smallest literary festival. Each writer had five minutes to perform their work. Space and time was limited. The shed was used as a stage while the audience was packed onto the patio. In all fourteen writers performed their work. We laughed, we cried, we were even a little bit scared. This small anthology shows the range of talent that was showcased on that warm September evening.
Essay Writing
Writers interested in earning cash for writing academic papers can apply for a job at Write My Essays writing service.
Hair Pieces
A collection of 250-word short stories inspired by the word ‘Hair’. Enter shop for price

What they're saying about WriteClub
J M Joseph,
author of Fire Boy trilogy
Alison Powell of WriteClub is a writer’s dream, a reader who sees your story before you do, an editor with an ear for the rhythm of prose. Her notes helped me carve out the opening for Fire Boy, the novel that helped me find an agent and publisher. Her classes are a godsend for any writer looking for help and inspiration.
Rebecca Rogers
author of The Purgatory Poisonings
With Al’s help and the wonderful support of the WriteClub community, I eventually finished the book!
longlisted for Bridport Prize 2021
With the support and encouragement of WriteClub, I’ve written much more than I thought I was capable of.
Fiona Fletcher Reid
author of Work It Out
Al is always encouraging, seems so genuinely invested in everyone taking part which was lovely. She created a warm, welcoming space which made showing up to take part very easy.

Creative Writing Workshops in Bristol
- 13th July 2022
By Riyan Hago
After a long hiatus due to Covid, we have launched our first creative writing workshop project in Bristol. Partnering up with The Wild Goose, a branch of the charity Inhope , we have curated a set of eight workshops taking place at their drop-in centre on Stapleton Road. We are joined by two writers, Mel Ciavucco and Amanda Thomas, who are facilitating the workshops, alternating every two weeks.
These introductory sessions explore the general realm of creative writing, focusing on reaching out to those who have currently or previously experienced homelessness or a precarious living situation, and giving them an opportunity to explore the art of writing.
The workshops are to be delivered chronologically, taking the participants on a journey through the process of writing a short narrative piece. By the end of the four months, our participants will have been guided through the planning process, discussions surrounding character creation, step-by-step advice on developing themes and plot, and tips and suggestions concerning how to ensure reader engagement, just to name a few!
In addition to practical advice on the technical and literary, our workshops are also a tool to help build confidence and inspire determination by discussing mental barriers and how to overcome them as well as the personal benefits that can be achieved through writing. Emotional and psychological obstacles such as self-doubt and imposter syndrome will be covered, as well as universal struggles shared by all levels of writers- in particular the dreaded yet often unavoidable writer’s block!
“Our first session was a full house, all keen to learn and engage, so there was lots of creative energy in the room! Their passion really came through, which was a real joy to see. Facilitating these workshops has been really enjoyable and has personally inspired me so much.” - Mel Ciavucco
Our participants have shown a varied background with regards to their relationship with writing; some of them have a colourful history of written and published work, while others have shown a keen interest in developing their writing skillset, curious as to what creative writing can do for them.
We hope that these workshops will not only provide some respite from daily life and an opportunity for amateur and aspiring writers alike to connect and share their work in an encouraging and inviting environment but that it will also serve as a steppingstone, for some, to explore further writing opportunities at Arkbound, such as our mentoring scheme, as well as publishing opportunities.
Although entirely optional and at the discretion of each individual, these workshops are an opportunity for participants to explore the theme of life experience and Biographical writing through a fictional form. The aim is that the psychoanalytical process involved would not only help with the creative writing process, but it could also provide a cathartic release- with mental wellbeing and emotional offloading being an already popular motivation behind many of our participants’ desire to write.
“Although it only started two weeks ago, I am really enjoying it immensely, so thank you for allowing me to partake in it because I know that I am going to find it extremely useful.” - Participant
With seven more sessions to go, our budding writers have dived headfirst into the sessions, with inspiration evidently bursting at the seams. Engaged and eager to contribute, discuss, and receive feedback, we have set a fantastic precedent for the workshops that follow, with ninety minutes of writing proving not quite enough!
The workshops have been supported with funding from Quartet Community Foundation, although we are still in need of additional funding to ensure a follow-up period of 6 months of mentoring is carried through, together with providing real publishing opportunities.

Poetry & Creative Writing Society
Description
Who are we?
The University of Bristol's Poetry & Creative Writing Society provides a platform for students and local writers to showcase their creativity and write / perform their work.
Our weekly workshops allow for poets and writers to produce and discuss their own poetry and creative writing in a friendly and encouraging environment through peer feedback, as well as giving them advice on how to write and create a career through writing. This year, these will take place every Thursday at 6 to 8pm in room 5.07, Senate House — make sure to come to our first Give it a Go session on September 29th.
We often have poetry slams, competitions and so on, including participating in the yearly UniSlam poetry competition.
Twice a year, we release anthologies full of work submitted by our members. It's a great way to show off your skills and see your work in print.
We also hold socials, which have ranged from board games nights to writing-themed beach trips, aimed at fostering a real community as well as being just a bunch of fun.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Courses are relaxed and friendly. Most of our courses are in small groups of 6 to 8 learners. Each learner has their own workspace in the classroom and the tutor will work with you on individual aspects of your project.
A suitable project can be anything from foot stool or dining chair to a small armchair or wing chair. Learners have even chosen to upholster headboards for beds. The techniques learned depend to an extent on the project you bring, from webbing and springing to stitched edges, box cushions and other soft furnishings.
Courses are hands-on from the start and you will begin work on your project during the first lesson. There may be dust involved when stripping the furniture and loose tacks and staples on the floor therefore dress appropriately and wear suitable footwear.
Courses take place in our workshop at Stoke Lodge. Stoke Lodge is our adult learning centre off Shirehampton Road in Stoke Bishop. The building has been hosting adult learning classes for over 50 years and is a beautiful old house set in fantastic grounds. We have plenty of free car parking and our back car park is closest to the annexe building and the upholstery classroom.
The upholstery room is a spacious room on the ground floor of our annexe building. The room has large windows and French doors that open out to the grounds so there is plenty of natural light.
Yes, we have a morning and an afternoon tea/coffee break at Stoke Lodge.
Drinks are served in the main building (just next to the annexe) and we charge £1 for a cup of tea, coffee or herbal tea with biscuits.
Tea breaks are a great way to step away from your project, grab a drink and catch up with learners on your course or those on other courses in the building. Its always a nice social part of the day where everyone gets the chance to stretch their legs and refresh.
No specific experience is needed although if you have some experience of hand and/or machine sewing that may be useful.

MA Creative Writing
The MA in Creative Writing at Bristol is designed for writers who would like to begin publishing their work. In warm, supportive workshops, you will be helped to improve your writing and in lectures and seminars you will increase your understanding of the industrial and critical contexts of contemporary literature.
You will be taught industry-focused content by experienced published writers. A special unit will introduce you to issues in contemporary publishing. Guest writers and experts from industry will speak, bringing up-to-date knowledge and expertise to the course. We also work closely with local writing groups and writing initiatives. You will work with a professional writer one-on-one as your manuscript develops.
Welcomed into the University's prestigious Department of English , you will be taught by groundbreaking researchers about contemporary critical issues in literature. You will be encouraged to read widely and books will be suggested for you by faculty. At the end of the course, you should be able to speak confidently and intelligently about your work and your reading.
Twilight teaching allows people with working or caring responsibilities to study - as do the part-time options. A strong writing portfolio will allow access without a first degree in a related subject - or indeed without a first degree. Times of classes will be announced well in advance, so that students can accommodate study in their busy lives.

Entry requirements
Places are offered on the basis of a portfolio of writing. We are looking for writers with potential to soon begin publishing their work. It is helpful, but not essential, for the applicant to have some idea of the project they hope to undertake during the course of the degree. Evidence of prior study in the area, a long-standing writing practice, workshop experience, and extensive reading can also strengthen the application. However, the most essential element of the application is the writing itself. We are currently only accepting submissions for fiction, creative non fiction (for example, memoir) and poetry. The portfolio should be no longer than 20 pages of fiction or creative non-fiction (double spaced, 12-point font) or 8-10 pages of poetry.
See international equivalent qualifications on the International Office website.
Read the programme admissions statement for important information on entry requirements, the application process and supporting documents required.
If English is not your first language, you will need to reach the requirements outlined in our profile level A.

If you are not sure that ordering an essay writing service is a good idea, then have no doubts - this is an absolutely natural desire of every aspiring student. Troubles with homework are something all learners have to experience. Do you think that the best high-achievers of your class pick the essays from some essay tree? - They have to struggle with tasks as well as you do. By the way, the chances are that they are already our customers - this is one of the most obvious reasons for them to look that happy.
Some students are also worried that hiring professional writers and editors is something like an academic crime. In reality, it is not. Just make sure that you use the received papers smartly and never write your name on them. Use them in the same manner that you use books, journals, and encyclopedias for your papers. They can serve as samples, sources of ideas, and guidelines.
So, you have a writing assignment and a request, "Please, write my essay for me." We have a team of authors and editors with profound skills and knowledge in all fields of study, who know how to conduct research, collect data, analyze information, and express it in a clear way. Let's do it!
