Self-love time

February’s got that lovey-dovey vibe, right? Use your journal to jot down things you appreciate about yourself, your wins, and moments that made you proud.

Cozy me-time

Think of it as a warm cup of cocoa for your soul. It’s your private space to unwind, process feelings, and just be with yourself —no judgments.

Cupid for creativity

Got creative ideas? Let them flow onto paper. Whether it’s doodles, dreams, or even a funny thought, your journal is your canvas .

Free write or journal prompts?

I like to do a combination of free writing and using journal prompts, depending on the day. Sometimes I need to just write it all out, especially before I go to sleep. My before bed journal entry was and still is an important part of my insomnia management. Other days, I need a structured journal session, with prompts for inspiration. Frequently Asked Questions About February Journal Prompts.

What Do You Write About In February?

There’s so much inspiration for journaling in the month of February. Not quite Spring yet but coming out of the darkest part of winter. Let’s look at some of the ideas for different prompts.

  • Valentines Day (February 14th)
  • Black History Month (In the USA, October in the UK).
  • International Book Giving Day (February 14th)
  • Chinese Lunar New Year (changes yearly, 2023 starts 22nd January and ends 5th February)
  • Shrove Tuesday or pancake day (21st February in 2023)

  • National Inventors Day (February 11th in the USA)
  • National Freedom Day (February 1st in the USA)

If the list of February Journal Prompts above is not enough, maybe chose one of these topics and see where some creative writing takes you.

How Many Journal Prompts Should You Do A Day?

Usually 1-2 journal prompts a day is a great way to get started. This makes the task seem less daunting and gives you the room to really explore what comes up. But there are no rules here.

Some prompts (what would you say in a love letter to yourself) take some time and thought, you might even do this one over several days. Others (i am happiest when______) might only require a few moments. The daily writing prompts in this post are a combination of short and longer form writing ideas.

What Should I Write In My 2023 Journal?

If you are thinking about your aspirations and dreams for the entire year, take some time to work out these 4 things (ideally on February 1st but you can do this anytime).

  • What am i deeply grateful for? This can be the big areas of your life (family, children, health, home, happiness) but don’t forget those small areas of satisfaction (your morning coffee, a great workout, your fluffy winter socks, a specific family member, snowy days). The more you look for all the things to be grateful for, the more abundant you will feel.
  • What transformation do you want to achieve this year? No matter how big or small, write it down.
  • What is your wildest dream? This is your journal, so no filter needed. Whatever your heart desires, write that in your journal. This is the best thing about journaling. It’s just for you. You can dream as big (or as small) as you like.
  • How can I make a difference to the world? What small positive changes can you make to your community, your planet, your relationships?

Take your dreams, ideas, inspiration from this and apply it to your own creative writing prompts to use in your daily writing practice. If you get stuck one day, use the monthly writing prompts to help you out.

I have every month covered on here and I am always adding new prompts. Enjoy developing your creative writing skills as well as figuring out your goals and dreams through the days of February.

February Journal Ideas.

You have a couple of choices if February is your first journal month. Use a physical journal (my absolute preference), use a digital version or try a quick notes journal app like Momento . You can create a February writing prompts calendar to make it easier when you come to journal. Don’t forget to make your February writing journal personal to you with beautiful journal covers.

Nice to hear! I try and be as original as I can!

This is such a great post with some great tips and awesome prompts for journaling! I love a list like this with journal prompts when I’m stumped about what to write about. Thanks for sharing these!

You are very welcome Katie.

I love that you also included journal prompts for kids! Thanks for sharing!

As I journal with my kids, I thought I would share a few today. Glad you enjoyed it!

This is such a great post! Journaling is one of those self-care activities I always mean to do more of, but don’t always fit in. I’ve been using a life planner that has lined pages in the back which has made it easier to journal/jot notes in my downtime. And since I always have it with me, it makes it easier to actually take the time to get my thoughts on paper! Taking note of these prompts to use for later! Thanks!!

That is such a great idea! I am going to try that myself. Thank you for the brilliant share.

You can also write something introspective, like how you’re feeling or what you think about something happening in your life. And then there’s always the classic “Today I did this…” approach.

But no matter what kind of journal you write in – whether a physical book or an app on your phone – it’s best to start by thinking about where you want to be when you’re done.

  • What do you hope to accomplish after you write these February writing prompts?
  • How will it feel?
  • What’ll it look like? What’ll happen next time?

Then write those things down first, rather than worrying about how good your creative writing skills are or whether anyone will read your journaling prompts work. The more specific and concrete your vision is, the better your chance of making it happen!

You Can Also Write Down Your Plans and Goals for This Month

You can also use these February journal prompts as an opportunity to reflect on the past month.

  • Did any of your goals work out last month?
  • How did they work out?
  • What did you learn from them?
  • What do you want to change in February?
  • Write down three new goals showing where you want to go this month!

Remember, it’s not just about writing around a journal prompt – it’s also about thinking about what happened last month and how it can help you with your plans!

How to Make Your Journal More Exciting

Writing in a journal is a great way to organize your thoughts, manage stress, and reflect on your day. However, there are so many ways to make journal writing more exciting! Here are a few tips to keep your journal fresh and fun:

  • Use different pens. Even if you only use one pen, you should change the color or style of ink every few weeks. You’ll find that it makes writing more fun and gets you out of your rut.
  • Write in different places. If you take your journal with you when you travel, you can record all the new things you experience without having to lug around a bunch of stuff (and remember where everything is!).
  • Change the way you write. Instead of writing in long paragraphs or lists, try bullet points or numbered lists!
  • Add photos or drawings to your entries. This will help you remember the moments when everything seemed perfect and remind you how much has changed since then!

You should also consider doing something special once a week – maybe take the time to write down what made your day great or write an entry about something that happened during the week that was interesting. It doesn’t have to be anything big, but it’s nice if you can capture those little moments during the week.

Give Yourself Permission to Be Vulnerable

The year is just getting started, and you still have a few months ahead of you to think about how you want to grow as a person.

This month, focus on permitting yourself to be vulnerable.

We’re all human – we have weaknesses, we make mistakes, and we have things we need to work on. But when it comes down to it, vulnerability makes us great. Vulnerability allows us to connect with others and build meaningful relationships with them. It allows us to stand up for ourselves and speak our minds when needed. It makes us feel secure enough in our skin to be ourselves without worrying about what others think of us.

So this month, allow yourself to be vulnerable. Think about what makes you most uncomfortable – maybe it’s fear of failure or criticism; maybe it’s fear of letting go of control of your life, or maybe it’s something else entirely – and then try ways to make yourself vulnerable in those situations.

February Brings a Fresh Start and a Chance to Set Your Goals for the Year

Whether you’re putting together your February writing prompts calendar for your journal or preparing a lesson plan for your students or kids, each of the February writing prompts above is designed to give you a thought or idea to work on.

Think about what’s important to you (or to your students) this month, and pick a journal prompt to get started. Then think about what’ll help you (or them) feel motivated and achieve those goals.

Don’t overwhelm yourself, journaling should be enjoyable!

90+ Things to Write About in February (Blogging & Journal Prompts)

by Nicole Etolen | Jan 30, 2020 | Blogging | 5 comments

Can't decide what to write in February? Check out 90+ writing prompts to use in blogs, journals and even in lesson plans! Ideas cover everything from food blogging to health topics.

About three years ago, I started a blogging series called “Things to Write About In…” filled with loads of monthly blogging prompts. These prompts are eternal, so the holidays and ideas that I gave you in June 2016 still work today. I realized, though, that I started the series mid-way through the year and never circled back around to the first few months! While January is pretty much over, February is just around the corner! Check out these great blogging prompts for February!

February Writing Prompts: What to Blog About This Month

FYI, you don”t have to be a blogger to find these writing prompts useful. They’re also great for inspiring journal entries, creative writing, and even school papers!

All Month Long

These “holidays” take place throughout the entire month, so you can use them whenever you want.

  • American Heart Month: Share your favorite heart-healthy tips, recipes and more. If you’re a lifestyle blogger, share a personal story about how heart disease has impacted your life. Sadly, since it’s the number one killer in the US, too many of us have up-close and personal experience with it. The American Heart Association is the best place to go for up-to-date info on heart disease.
  • Bake for Family Fun Month:  While this theme is perfect for recipe bloggers, you don’t have to be a wiz in the kitchen to use it! Share your favorite tools for baking with kids, safety tips, a memory of something you used to make with your grandmother, and so on. Roundups are also great. Focus on foods that you can make and share with your kids!
  • Declutter For A Cause Month: We all have way too much clutter! Get organized while helping others with this theme! Share tips on organizing your home. Here’s a hint: dig into those areas that aren’t covered so often, like a linen closet or bookshelves. That way, you’ll stand out amidst the 100K tips on how to organize your pantry or bedroom closet.  I did a post on organizing my bathroom cabinet once. I wish I could say it’s still as organized as it was after that! Along with your tips, share some of your favorite places that can benefit from your clutter!
  • Dog Training Education Month: If you’re a pet blogger, you have a lot of great themes to choose from this month, including dog training tips . You’re not going outrank Caesar or the AKC for general tips, so dive into something super specific that you’ve learned from training your own dog. Maybe you taught her how to run an agility course by using a laser pointer, or how to dance on command! I shared some tips on how to train the untrainable last year as part of a partnership with PawCulture.
  • Grapefruit Month:  The obvious theme would be a grapefruit recipe post. Not a food blogger? No worries! You can write about the health benefits of grapefruit, different skin care products that contain it, or even a grapefruit-based craft. Honestly, I can’t stand grapefruit so I’m blanking a bit here. Here’s a pretty good resource for learning more about grapefruit month.
  • International Boost Self-Esteem Month:  First, I love this “month.” We all need to boost our self-esteem a bit sometimes, right? For this topic, you can go in so many directions. Self-help books that aren’t boring (for book bloggers), a craft along with how crafting with kids helps boost their self-esteem, general tips, relaxation tips, and so on.
  • Library Lovers Month:  Libraries are so incredibly important, yet fewer and fewer people are using them. Did you know that most libraries have ebooks now? They serve them through Overdrive. You just need an account at your library to borrow books on Overdrive. Ideas for library lovers month include: sharing tips on getting the most out of your library, free programs that libraries offer, books to borrow, benefits of libraries for kids, or just a roundup of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Hmmm, I may use that one.
  • Black History Month (I am also seeing this called African American History Month. I do not know which is correct, so if I chose the wrong name, please forgive my ignorance. It’s not intentional, I searched for the answer and got mixed results) : Again, there are so many ways to celebrate this month, from crafts and recipes to diverse books to read with your kids. If you’re a travel blogger, you can share some ideas on places to visit for interesting lectures or museums that celebrate African American achievements. You can also write about ways to teach kids about the Civil Rights movement. My son just finished The Watson’s Go to Birmingham for his cyber school Language Arts class, and it was really well-written and engaging.
  • National Cherry Month:  My mom loves chocolate covered cherries, so if you want to write a recipe about how to make the ones with the creamy stuff in the middle that you buy in grocery stores, I’d love to see it! For other recipe ideas, try: roundups, desserts, dinner recipes that incorporate cherries (to stand out from the dessert crowd), and drinks (cocktails and mocktails). Non-food bloggers can come up with cute cherry crafts, the health benefits of cherries, or even homeschooling lessons about the history of cherries!
  • National Hot Breakfast Month:  One word for you: pancakes! They trend like, well, hotcakes, on Pinterest. Get creative and come up with pancake recipes that step outside the usual chocolate chip or fruit box. You can even combine it with cherry month and make some chocolate-covered cherry pancakes! Yum! Other ideas include: benefits of eating a hot breakfast every day, how to make time for hot breakfasts on a busy morning, roundups, and programs that help kids in need enjoy a hot breakfast.
  • National Pet Dental Health Month:  Here’s another great topic for pet bloggers! Write a how-to (think outside the box, like how to clean your high-energy dog’s teeth, or how to clean your senior cat’s teeth, etc), share your favorite dental health products, or interview a vet for expert advice. February is also Responsible Pet Owner’s Month & Spay/Neuter Awareness month.
  • National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month: Help raise awareness and prevent teen dating violence by sharing parenting tips for all ages and stages. For example, if you typically write about toddlers, you can share tips for laying the groundwork for the future. Think “Things You Can Do Now to Teach Your Toddler About Respecting Others” and what not. You can also share resources for teens who have been through dating violence.
  • National Women Inventors Month:  Celebrate all of the amazing ways women have contributed to the world during National Women Inventors Month! List your favorite inventions from women or get super creative and invent something of your own!

February Weekly Holidays

  • Children’s Authors & Illustrators Week (4th through the 10th): Share your favorite children’s books , tips for encouraging kids to read, or a story about the book that changed your life when you were a kid!
  • Children’s Mental Health Week (starts on the 5th): Our kids are dealing with so much these days, it’s no wonder that anxiety in children has been steadily rising over the last few decades. From bullying to ridiculous standardized tests to public schools that are run more like boot camps than places for children, the pressures our kids face is worse than ever. Share your parenting tips on how to reduce stress in our kids , raise awareness about mental health concerns like depression in children, and so on.
  • XXIII Winter Olympics (starts on the 9th, runs through the 25th): The Olympics is ripe with themes for every type of blogger and educator! Share Olypic-specific crafts (like these suncatchers ), write about things to do in Pyeongchang, South Korea, share your favorite Korean recipe, and so on. You can also hone in on your favorite Winter Olympics sport and just write about that. Give tips on how to get into skiing for beginners, the best places to go ice skating, the most epic moments in ice hocket, etc.

February Writing Prompts against pink background with red stars

February marks the midpoint of winter here in the United States. It includes Groundhog Day where we guess how many weeks of winter remain, Valentine's Day when we celebrate love, and President's Day when we remember George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

It's also Black History Month. The past few years, I have taught in a school that has highlighted so many unsung African American heroes in American history, from musicians to inventors to scientists. It's become one of my favorite parts of the year.

Whatever you celebrate this month, I hope you'll find ways to keep your pen moving across the page. Whether you are writing with students or to build your own writing skills or daily writing habit , use these 29 prompts to keep you writing all month long.

24 Heartfelt Poetry Prompts for February

February is in full swing, which means lots of fresh poetry prompts that explore love, loss, and an appreciation of the journey our lives take us on. Get out your pen and paper (or laptop), and let’s dive into some February-themed writing prompts to get you started.

1. Write a poem about celebrating a Virtual Valentine’s day. How do you do it? Who do you celebrate with?

2. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the month of February? Write a poem inspired by it.

5. February’s birthstone is the amethyst. Read up on this distinctive, purple crystal and write a poem inspired by its attributes or history.

6. Although February is often a time to celebrate romantic love, take the time to write a poem of appreciation for another loved one: a friend , parent, sibling, or any other person who holds meaning in your life.

7. Try your hand at a collaboration poem with a friend, and incorporate a February theme (themes could include romance, heartbreak, or celebrating Black history .)

8. Write an acrostic poem using the word H-E-A-R-T.

9. Watch a romantic comedy and write a poem immediately after inspired by it.

11. What does love mean to you? Write a poem defining love in your own way.

12. Have you heard of the Five Love Language s? Read about them—maybe even take the quiz to discover yours—and write a poem based on what you learned about how you give or receive love.

13. Think back on previous Valentine’s Days and create a poem based on a past memory.

14. Write a poem that explores a relationship from the beginning stages of new love to the deeper, long-term companionship of commitment.

15. Write a poem that discusses falling in love versus staying in love.

16. Write a poem about fighting to make love last.

17. Create a haiku that focuses on a favorite aspect of February. Maybe you have a February birthday or participate in a special event this month. Use that as your muse.

18. What makes February feel different from January or March? Write about some of the ways it stands out.

19. Write a poem about putting a shattered heart back together. What does the process look like? What is learned along the way?

20. Take out a pen and paper. Write a letter to someone you love, and let that letter inspire a poem immediately after.

21. Choose five love songs at random on Spotify, or wherever you listen to music. What did they have in common? How did they differ? Write a poem that seeks to make sense of any overlapping themes.

22. If you were going to receive a Valentine this year, what would you want it to be? Write about why that would be special to you.

23. Write a love letter to yourself. Take the time to highlight some of your strengths and accomplishments over the past year. Write yourself the encouragement you would write to a loved one or friend.

24. Think of three different people who matter greatly to you. Write a poem inspired by each of them and give it to them this month as a unique Valentine’s Day gift.

While several of these prompts have to do with Valentine’s Day and romantic love, I hope they also inspire you to think about love in a broader sense. I hope they serve as a catalyst so you can creatively explore where you are this year compared to last year. I hope this gives you an opportunity to think about the people and the things that matter and how they can inspire further writing and reflection. And I hope that these prompts serve as a starting point as you dive into a new year of writing prompts. If you try any of them out, be sure to tag us or let us know in the comments.

Happy writing, friends!

February has also long been designated as Black History Month . Finally, the month includes the only holiday starring a weather forecasting marmot, Groundhog Day .

75 February Inspirational Quotes For Your Best Month

With January in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look forward to the shortest month of the year! And what better way to welcome February then with a list of 75 February inspirational quotes to reinvigorate your January motivation!

February is a beautiful month that carries the sound of Spring to our ears as March is right around the corner. And with the promise of spring comes sweet surprises, fresh starts, and new beginnings!

February is also known for being the month of love, but you don’t have to be in love to take advantage of the fresh start that this month brings! February is the perfect time to cherish friendship, celebrate dreams and goals, and refocus on living an intentional life.

One bad habit I have worked hard to break is letting each New Years Resolution turn into a January resolution. Because you know how it is – New Years Resolutions feel great for a few weeks, but once the first of February hits, we need some real motivation to keep us committed to our goals!

We don’t need a new year for a fresh start! Let’s start today by digging into this list of 75 February inspirational quotes to make this your best month!

21 Exciting Ways to Have Fun with Your Family in February

February is  the month of love  and there are so many creative ways to enjoy family fun in February . Of course, there are plenty of ways to show love to your family this month as we celebrate Valentine’s Day but I have so many more ideas to keep having fun even after the day of hearts has passed.

The seasonal qualities of February are similar to the ones that made January so specia l :

It’s dark.  It’s cold.  And sometimes, if you are lucky, it is white.

Take some time this month to have some fun and connect as a family . To make it a bit easier for you, I’ve compiled a list of ways you can make some family memories this month.

Find a list of fantastic ideas for fun with your family in February.

(This post contains affiliate links.  Read my full disclosure .)

February Family Considerations

February is another cold month with early darkness in the evenings, but at this point, the busy holiday season is in the distance and it might be time to step up the fun a bit.

It’s a great time to head outdoors and enjoy cold and snowy weather. There is always fun to be had in any type of weather so take some time to appreciate the chill of February.

Of course, Valentine’s Day is a wonderful way to celebrate those you love this month. You’ll find a few special ways to do that below.

Finding Ways To Have Fun In February

Before you feel any sort of pressure to attack all of these ideas, let me assure you that I won’t be doing them all .

Instead, I’ve compiled this list for all of us to peruse and then purposefully select the activities that will work best for our family this month.  After all, we want to connect with our kids and NOT connect with a “to-do” list.

Enjoy Plenty of February Outdoor Fun

1.  go sledding.

If the white stuff appears, go for it.  Snow tubes work well in fluffy snow, though southerners find that a pool swim tube will work in a pinch! These flexible flyers are a favorite in this house and they work well in all types of snow and ice.

Be a kid again and join in the fun. I admit that I typically send Daddy for this sort of fun while I sip hot tea and take pictures, but I have taken a turn before and busted a snow tube on the ice. That was a classic mom moment for sure.

2. Make Snow Ice Cream

Need a recipe ?  It’s quick, easy, and delicious.  Just be sure to grab some clean snow!  I like to put out a few bowls to collect the snow while it is still falling from the sky.

3.  Read a Snowy Evening Poem

Enjoy this favorite poem by Robert Frost in a beautifully illustrated version for kids. Be sure to find the hidden creatures in the illustrations on every page.

4.   Take a Snow Day

I’m looking at YOU, homeschooling mom! Surprise the kids with a snow day and cancel all of the school work. You can use some of the ideas on this list instead of schoolwork or just cuddle up, drink hot chocolate, and play some games together.

You can homeschool in the snow if you don’t want to cancel schoolwork for the day. It’ll be a creative way to combine learning goals with snow day fun.

5.   Make a Snowman

Making a snowman is a traditional snowy day activity. Be creative with your snowy friend. Give him some eyes and a scarf or hat. You can even make a snow pet instead of a person.

Of course, not everyone has a regular snowy season and the weather can be hard to predict. Plan a snowman day that isn’t weather dependent and make this mixed media snowman from That Artist Woman. Then you’ll have a snowman who won’t melt away in the spring but can stay in your house for as long as you like.

6. Nature Study

There are plenty of winter nature study ideas you can explore with your kids. Take advantage of the unique nature you can explore at this time of year that isn’t available during the summer.

7. Go for a Winter Hike

Bundle up and enjoy all that your favorite trails have to offer in the wintertime. You can find plenty of great winter hiking tips with kids if you need some ideas for comfortable and fun hiking.

Embrace the Darkness in the Early Evening

One of the great advantages of February is the early darkness . The house gets dark well before bedtime and the fun can begin! If you missed them, there are plenty of ideas involving candles on my January Family Fun list of activities .

8. Play with Flashlights

If your kids don’t own flashlights, Valentine’s Day is a perfect excuse to grab a few. When the sun goes down, play hide and seek in the dark or invent a crazy game of your own. If you turn off all of the lights in your house and pass out flashlights, I promise you that games will begin .

I don’t just make this stuff up, we live this stuff in our nutty house. And if you want a little view of it, this past periscope of “Sneak-a-Game” reveals the craziness:

9. Shine A Light Books

Have you seen these fantastic books that are perfect for dark evenings.

They are perfect for reading in the dark with your flashlights! As you turn the pages, shine a light behind each page in the book to reveal hidden images! The Secrets of Winter   was a Christmas gift to one child in this house, along with his requested handle glowing flashlight .

10.  Take a walk in the dark

Bundle up. Make hot drinks. Wear headlamps if you have them.  Simple fun can be quite memorable.

NOTE: A walk in the dark is a real treat for your little ones who don’t get to see late-night hours in the summer. I still remember my little guy getting so excited when he saw the moon the first time and declared, “Look!  Little Sun!”

11. Play with Glow Sticks

Grab a party pack and have some fun while it is dark. During the summer you have to wait until after 9 PM (or later) for fun with glowsticks, but you can start early in the winter and have some glowing fun!

One of my favorite ideas happened during the pandemic and we had a great time dancing in the dark with glowsticks taped to our bodies:

Plan Some Fun for Valentine’s Day

12. write i love you’s.

Make a collage of hearts on each of your kids’ bedroom doors letting them know how much you love them and all of the great reasons why: – Cut out 14 hearts for each kid.   – Write one reason you love that child on each heart.   – Beginning on February 1st, tape a heart to their bedroom door.   – On Valentines Day, they’ll have 14 hearts on their door.

TIP: If your kids share a bedroom, as my boys do, then use red-colored hearts for one child and pink for the other.

My kids LOVED this idea and kept the hearts on their doors for months until I finally removed them and let them put them in special boxes with their memories from childhood.

13. Read a Valentine’s Day book together

a. Pete the Cat: Valentines Day is Cool b. A Crankenstein Valentine . c. There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose .

14. Valentine’s Crafts and Activities

a. Tween Valentines Canvas Craft . This one doesn’t require a lot of supplies and I bet your tweens/teens could adapt this with plenty of their own ideas. b. Valentine’s Day Lava Lamp Fun . Combine a love for science with LOVE on Valentine’s Day. c. Create Bleeding Hearts . This one is for the preschool set, but ALL of my kids enjoyed it (picture below). The big bonus was that it was simple.

15. Make Valentines for Friends

Make these lollipop valentines with your kids to deliver to friends. All you need to make these adorable valentines are lollipops, tape, crayons, markers, scissors, and paper.

Activities to do Indoors

16.   have an indoor picnic.

Spread a blanket on the floor and enjoy lunch together. You can bring along a picnic basket or just bring your lunch plates to the floor.

17. Build a Fort

It’s a great month to make forts out of blankets.

18.   Break Out the Sleeping Bags

I know it sounds goofy, but gather the sleeping bags and leave them somewhere so the kids will see them when they wake up.  You might be surprised at the creative play that will occur. And if nothing else happens, snuggle down for a family movie.

Supreme Court poised to allow Trump to remain on Colorado ballot

Across the ideological spectrum, the justices voiced deep concern about permitting a single state to disqualify a presidential candidate.

The Supreme Court on Thursday seemed poised to allow former president Donald Trump to remain on the Colorado ballot, expressing deep concerns about permitting a single state to disqualify the leading Republican candidate from seeking national office.

Justices from across the ideological spectrum warned of troubling political ramifications if they do not reverse a ruling from Colorado’s top court that ordered Trump off the ballot after finding that he engaged in insurrection around the Jan. 6 , 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.

The court was considering the unprecedented and consequential question of whether a state court can enforce a rarely invoked, post-Civil War provision of the Constitution to disqualify Trump from returning to the White House.

During more than two hours of argument, the justices asked questions that suggested their often divided bench could reach a unanimous or near-unanimous decision to reject the challenge to Trump’s eligibility brought by six Colorado voters. Not since the court’s 2000 ruling in Bush v. Gore , which focused on ballot-counting and sealed the election for President George W. Bush, has the Supreme Court been thrust into such a pivotal role in a presidential election.

Liberal Justice Elena Kagan repeatedly questioned whether one state should be allowed to decide whether a presidential candidate is disqualified. “Why should a single state have the ability to make this determination not only for their own citizens but for the rest of the nation?” she asked, adding, “That seems quite extraordinary, doesn’t it?”

Conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett agreed, adding that “it just doesn’t seem like a state call.”

Trump is quickly closing in on the GOP nomination, and several justices suggested that a state court ruling initiated by voters in one state to bar him from federal office would throw the presidential race into extreme disarray.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. predicted that a number of other states would quickly try to disqualify the leading Democratic candidate if the justices allowed the Colorado decision to stand. He called the prospect of a handful of states deciding the presidential election a “pretty daunting consequence.”

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh worried about disenfranchising voters if the court removed Trump from the ballot. “What about the idea that we should think about democracy, think about the right of the people to elect candidates of their choice, of letting the people decide?” he asked.

In response, attorney Jason Murray, representing the Colorado voters, said, “The reason we’re here is that President Trump tried to disenfranchise 80 million Americans who voted against him, and the Constitution doesn’t require that he be given another chance.”

Derek Muller, a University of Notre Dame law professor who has been closely following the case, said Thursday’s arguments showed both liberals and conservatives on the court are “uncomfortable with the notion that it was going to be the decider here.”

“The court does not want to be in the business of cleaning up ballot access disputes for presidential candidates in perpetuity,” Muller said.

Unlike the divided ruling in Bush v. Gore, which polarized the nation, Muller said a unanimous or close to unanimous decision might be more widely accepted by the public.

“Maybe it’ll be more palatable to people to say, ‘Listen, we really expect the political process to solve this, rather than expecting litigation to answer the question.’”

The Supreme Court fast-tracked the case and could announce a decision at any time. Its opinion is expected to resolve the issue of Trump’s eligibility in other states where people have brought similar challenges.

Colorado’s top court put its December ruling on hold while the litigation continues. Trump’s name will appear on the state’s already printed March 5 primary ballot.

The legal questions at issue involve Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits anyone who previously pledged to support the Constitution as “an officer of the United States” from returning to office if they betrayed their oath by engaging in insurrection.

The challenge to Trump’s candidacy was brought by six Colorado voters — four Republicans and two independents. After a five-day trial, a lower court judge in November concluded that Trump engaged in insurrection when he summoned his supporters to Washington and encouraged an angry crowd to disrupt Congress’s certification of President Biden’s 2020 victory. But the judge also found that Section 3 did not apply to the presidency.

A divided Colorado Supreme Court disagreed and barred Trump from the ballot, prompting his appeal to the Supreme Court. Maine’s secretary of state reached the same conclusion, but her decision is also on hold.

Much of the discussion Thursday centered on differing interpretations of the text and history of the 14th Amendment provision, also known as the disqualification clause, which was initially intended to stop former Confederates from returning to power after the Civil War.

Conservative Justice Clarence Thomas and liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson — who have clashed on the most divisive issues before the court — both expressed deep skepticism of the Colorado voters’ view of the scope of the 14th Amendment. They agreed with Roberts’s assessment that the post-Civil War amendment was aimed at limiting the power of the states.

And yet, Roberts said, the Colorado voters seeking to remove Trump from the ballot appear to be trying to use the same amendment to say states have the power to prevent candidates from running for nationwide office.

“That seems to be a position that is at war with the whole thrust of the 14th Amendment and very ahistorical,” Roberts said.

The text of Section 3 does not specify who is supposed to enforce the clause or when it should be invoked.

If the court allows Trump to remain on the ballot and he wins, the questions about whether he is eligible to serve as president could come roaring back, warned Murray, the attorney for the Colorado voters.

“I think it could come back with a vengeance because ultimately members of Congress may have to make the determination — after a presidential election if President Trump wins — about whether or not he’s disqualified from office and whether to count votes cast for him under the Electoral Count Reform Act,” Murray said.

A majority of justices seemed ready to embrace the argument of Trump’s attorney, Jonathan Mitchell, who said enforcement of the disqualification clause is up to Congress, not state courts or officials. In addition, Mitchell said Section 3 does not apply to Trump because the president is not an “officer of the United States,” which is one of the terms the section uses when discussing potential insurrectionists.

Jackson seemed to share his doubts about whether Section 3 applies to former presidents because it is not one of the government positions specifically listed in the text.

“You have a list and president is not on it,” she emphasized.

Kagan, however, pressed Mitchell about why the framers would have left out the highest office in the land. What reason would they have had, she asked, for saying an insurrectionist cannot hold the “whole panoply of offices in the United States, but we’re perfectly fine with that insurrectionist being president?”

Mitchell acknowledged that it “does seem odd that President Trump would fall through the cracks,” but said the text represents a compromise. He insisted “officer” means an appointed official, not the elected president.

When it was his turn at the lectern, Murray, the voters’ lead attorney, urged the justices not to create a “special exemption” from the disqualification clause for Trump.

There were reminders throughout the argument about how much the nation’s political and civic landscape has changed in recent years with increasingly frequent impeachment proceedings in Congress and unprecedented efforts to subvert the 2020 election results.

Murray noted that Section 3 has rarely been invoked in modern times: “There’s a reason Section 3 has been dormant for 150 years, and it’s because we haven’t seen anything like January 6th since Reconstruction.”

Alito said in response that the past could not predict the future, noting that there were no impeachments of presidents for more than 100 years and “in fairly short order over the last couple of decades, we’ve had three.”

The justices, however, did not spend much time focused on the question of whether Trump engaged in insurrection — a topic that has deeply divided Democrats and Republicans.

The primary mention of that issue came when Jackson asked Trump’s lawyer why the violent attempt to stop Congress’s certification of the electoral vote count on Jan. 6 did not amount to an insurrection.

Mitchell answered by characterizing the attack as a “riot” and said there had not been an “organized, concerted effort to overthrow the government.”

“The events were shameful, criminal, violent, all of those things, but it did not qualify as insurrection,” Mitchell said.

Trump did not attend Thursday’s argument, though he has shown up in court recently for other legal cases he is involved in. But he said he followed the hearing from Mar-a-Lago, his Florida home and private club. In remarks to reporters afterward, Trump defended his words and the actions of his supporters on Jan. 6.

In the three years since the attack on the Capitol, the former president has steadily escalated his glorification of the rioters, including some who have been convicted of assaulting police . He also has spread misinformation and conspiracy theories about the deadly violence.

Trump on Thursday repeated the falsehood that “there were no guns” on Jan. 6 even though court records, trial testimony and accounts from police officers and rioters have shown that multiple people brought firearms to the area between the White House and the Capitol, and six men were arrested that day for having guns in the vicinity of the Capitol.

He also attempted to shift blame for the assault to then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “I think it was an insurrection caused by Nancy Pelosi,” he said. Trump has in the past falsely accused Pelosi of being responsible for Capitol security and claimed he offered National Guard troops, an assertion contradicted by other officials.

There were reminders in court Thursday that the former president’s eligibility to return to office is not the only question before the justices that could affect Trump’s political future.

When Kavanaugh tried to get his lawyer to acknowledge that a candidate could be disqualified from office if prosecuted and convicted of insurrection, Mitchell agreed. But, he added, his client is arguing he has presidential immunity and would not concede he could be prosecuted for his conduct around Jan. 6.

Trump is expected to ask the Supreme Court by Monday to reverse a ruling this week from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit that said he is not protected by presidential immunity from being prosecuted for trying to block Biden’s 2020 victory.

The justices separately have said they will review the validity of a law that was used to charge hundreds of people in connection with the Jan. 6 riot and is also a key element of Trump’s four-count federal election obstruction case in Washington.

In a sign of the significance of the case before the high court on Thursday, the courtroom was filled with many guests of the justices, high-profile visitors and dozens of journalists. Among those in attendance was Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), who helped lead impeachment proceedings against Trump.

Trump told reporters at Mar-a-Lago that the argument was “a beautiful thing to watch, in many respects.”

“I thought the presentation today was a very good one,” he said. “I think it was well received. I hope it was well received.”

Isaac Arnsdorf, Rachel Weiner and Amy B Wang contributed to this report.

Changes to various permitted development rights: consultation

Applies to england.

This consultation seeks views on changes to several existing permitted development rights that allow for householder development, building upwards to create new homes, the demolition of certain buildings and rebuild as homes, electric vehicle charge points and air source heat pumps.

This consultation closes at 11:59pm on 9 April 2024

Consultation description

This consultation contains a number of proposed changes to permitted development rights.

To provide householders with further flexibility to meet the needs of growing families and maximise the potential of existing homes, we are consulting on a number of changes to these rights. The consultation proposes changes which will enable householders to build larger extensions and provide further freedoms to construct outbuildings.

To support the delivery of new homes, we are seeking views on whether the existing building upward rights can be amended to increase the scope of buildings that can benefit from the rights. We are consulting on changes to the demolition and rebuild right to increase the scope of buildings that can benefit from the right and allow for a larger rebuild footprint.

To provide further flexibility to households and businesses wishing to install electric vehicle charging outlets, we are consulting on a number of changes to the relevant rights. We are seeking feedback on whether permitted development rights should allow for units necessary for the operation of electric vehicle charge points such as equipment housing or storage cabinets. We are also seeking feedback on amendments to the permitted development right for air source heat pumps, including consulting on removing the limitation that they must be at least 1 metre from the boundary of the property.
