If you’re like most people, when you hear the word wiki, you automatically think of  Wikipedia . Almost anyone who uses the Internet has used  Wikipedia  from time to time to learn more about any of the millions of topics it covers in its four million pages. Indeed, it might seem harder  not  to use  Wikipedia  than to use it since its pages tend to come up first, or at least in the top five, of most Google searches, and most surveys of the world’s most popular websites put  Wikipedia  in the top ten. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine what the internet would be like today without wikis!

This article is about how you—and your fellow students—can use wikis to help write essays and conduct academic research. To make things easier, we’ve divided it into two sections. First, we’ll talk about how to use wikis to conduct research. Then we’ll talk briefly about using wikis to actually help you write your project.

Wikis as a Research Tool

As a student, though, you’ve probably been discouraged from using Wikipedia by well-meaning teachers. They might have forbidden you from citing or even looking at Wikipedia articles. Most of their objections are based on the myth that “just anybody” can put or change articles on a wiki. What if that article you’re citing about oil spills was authored by a BP employee? What if that article on ghost hunting was put up there by a “believer” who refused to consider any evidence that didn’t confirm her views on the paranormal?

While these suspicions are false— Wikipedia is often more accurate than commercial encyclopedias—these teachers are right about one thing: if you’re writing an academic paper, you need to cite academic sources, and Wikipedia —just like any other encyclopedia—is not an academic source. That’s not their fault; they were never intended to be used by students writing research papers. Instead, they’re designed for everyday people who just want a concise, simplified summary of a topic or issue. The author of an encyclopedia article might go to great lengths to make sure the facts presented there are accurate, but the information is still heavily filtered and diluted by the time it gets to print or screen. That’s because the author has to take in whatever has been written by professional researchers, then interpret it for people who have little to no understanding of the subject at hand.

Imagine trying to describe a new phone app to your tech-savvy friends versus a family member who has never owned a mobile phone. That’s the level of ignorance that every encyclopedia (or Wikipedia ) contributor has to deal with. Needless to say, a lot of information is going to be simplified or just left out entirely.

Academic sources, on the other hand, aren’t filtered or diluted at all. They don’t need to be, because the people who read them are experts in the subject matter. Because they are experts, they are better able to pick out where authors make mistakes. They can also tell (usually) when an author is intentionally being dishonest.

This line between academic and non-academic sources is where Wikipedia shines compared to its print-based cousins. Unlike them, Wikipedia pages are heavily referenced, meaning that the authors are routinely asked to provide credible documentation to back up their information. If you look closely at a page such as the “Deepwater Horizon oil spill” page, you’ll notice lots of numbers in brackets at the end of some sentences—nearly five hundred different sources! Click on one, and you’ll jump straight to the citation, which in most cases is a credible source such as an academic article, book, reputable website, government report, or newspaper item. Even though your teacher might not accept Wikipedia articles as a source, he or she is probably fine with a scientific report from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management or the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies. If these sources aren’t available online, you’ll need to go to your library’s homepage to figure out how to access them. You can do that by searching your library’s database, but if it gets confusing, just ask a reference librarian to help you.

Wikis like the Wikipedia can help you do research, but remember—they’re just there to give you a shallow understanding of a topic. When you’re ready to go deeper, click on the sources and find the actual academic research you need for your project.

Wikis as a Writing Tool

Using wikis to actually help you write a paper is very different than just using them for research. The big problem is other people. When you write an old-fashioned essay, you get to make all the decisions regarding what you say, how you say it, what order you put it in, and how many times you proofread it before handing it in. A wiki, on the other hand, turns all of these decisions into discussions. If you anger the other people working on the wiki, they might simply roll back your changes or even banish you! In any event, a poorly functioning group with lots of anger and resentment is very unlikely to produce a good wiki, assuming they produce anything at all.

Instead of viewing wikis as a writing tool, then, you should view them as a writing community. Understand that the other people involved are probably just as proud and convinced of the rightness of their choices as you are. Wiki writers have to be willing to see their own work routinely modified or even deleted by other people. That’s a big blow to a lot of students’ egos, especially those with good grades in their writing courses and who are proud of their ability. There’s always the temptation to get angry or depressed about it, lose your focus, and end up with a bad grade.

If you’re starting a new wiki project, then, the most important thing you can do is make sure that everyone onboard is clear about the goals you’ve set and the method for getting there. Plan ahead for disagreements and treat everyone with respect, especially when you feel they don’t deserve it. For your part, if you’ve argued your case and the majority still disagrees with you, don’t be stubborn or resentful. Just quietly accept it and move on, and don’t let it stop you from trying to make the rest of the project as good as it can be. If you show that you can handle disagreement in a professional and mature fashion, you’ll gain a level of trust and respect that’s a lot more valuable in the long run than the short-lived satisfaction you get from lashing out.

On a positive note, wikis are very simple to use, and the software is often free. Wikispaces , Wikidot , and Wetpaint are great choices for anyone new to wikis. Check out their various features and see which one will work best for your project. It’s also a good idea to look for existing wikis that are similar to what you have in mind; you’ll learn a lot by example. Even if you can’t find a wiki on your particular subject, such as the prevention of oil spills, you might find one on the prevention of forest fires. Whatever worked (and didn’t work) for the forest fire page will likely apply to yours as well, so study it carefully.

There’s a lot to know about wikis, and a good place to learn more is Wikipedia itself. Next time you’re doing research, take some time to notice the numbers in brackets and examine the sources the contributors have used to support their points. If you’re creating or contributing to a wiki project, don’t treat it like a traditional essay. Now, you’re working with other people. Be clear about the goals of the project, any rules and guidelines, and always be willing to compromise.

Brandy Melville Stores Are Hell on Earth

how to be a writer for wikipedia

When she spots one of the painted wooden signs outside a Brandy Melville store, filmmaker Eva Orner stops in her tracks. “Since I started doing the documentary, I always sneak in and check out how many people are in there and what they’re selling,” she tells Vanity Fair. What she sees, she says, is “horrifying. I think ‘cult’ is a word that is bandied around a lot, and we were very careful when we decided to use it.”

Orner is referring to the name of her latest documentary, Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion, which debuts on HBO on April 9. In it, the Oscar winner ( Taxi to the Dark Side ) unspools the dark inner workings of a fast fashion company that targets teens and has been worn by the likes of Kaia Gerber and Kendall Jenner. According to the doc, beneath soft baby-tees emblazoned with sayings like “Stressed, Depressed, But Well Dressed” is a shadowy operation that both preys upon and profits off female insecurity. The words “antisemitism,” “racism,” and “sexism” are tossed out within the first three minutes of the film regarding certain executives, a harbinger of dark deeds to be revealed. Brandy Melville did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“Most companies maybe do one bad thing,” says Orner. With Brandy Melville, “something bad happens, and then something worse happens. And it just keeps going. By the end, your jaw is on the floor.”

Orner, an Australian who drives an electric car and has adopted a vegetarian diet, was introduced to Brandy Melville by Oscar-nominated producer Jonathan Chinn ( Black Sheep ) and Oscar-winning producer Simon Chinn ( Searching for Sugar Man ). As the film shows, the store presents itself as less of a label than as a lifestyle. Brandy Melville hires beautiful girls who seem popular—typically thin, white, and under the age of 18—who are often recruited while shopping in the store, the doc claims. Candidates are asked to submit full-body photos and offer up their social media handles in the place of any skill-based qualifications, said one former employee that Orner interviewed.

Staff members of color are hired but are often relegated to working in stock rooms, ex-employees told the filmmaker. Those who work at a store’s entrance—all of whom must fit the “one size fits most” clothes the company carries—are required to take daily “store style” photos that are sent to Brandy Melville’s enigmatic founder, former workers in the doc explained. Employees could be—and reportedly were —hired and fired based on such images. “They’re like 16-year-old girls. You can find, like, 700 different reasons to fire them,” one anonymous company employee says in the doc. “Like, it’s too easy. It wasn’t even fair.”

All of this information was unearthed before Orner began working on her film through lawsuits brought against the company and reporting by Kate Taylor, an investigative journalist at Business Insider . (Brandy Melville denied all wrongdoing in a 2022 class-action lawsuit brought by ex-employees. The company settled for $1.5 million.) But the revelations haven’t made much of a dent in Brandy Melville’s revenue. “There has been an exposé on this company. A lot of young girls know that the company’s not great, but they still shop there,” Orner explains. “And I find that really disturbing. There comes a point in your life where you have to [decide], What kind of person do I want to be? When a brand’s been exposed as being really shit, you can get clothes elsewhere. The fact that people are so locked into this brand is really surprising.”

Orner set out to make a film that would contextualize the company’s ethical issues within a larger environmental landscape. Her cameras traveled to the far reaches of Prato, Italy—where Brandy Melville’s clothing is produced in crowded factories—and Ghana, which has become a dumping ground for heaps of unwanted garments. In the documentary, former staff members said that higher-ups would buy the non-Brandy shirts off their backs so they could replicate and mass produce their design—a practice that has led to copyright infringement suits against the brand. (After being sued by Forever 21 in 2016, Brandy Melville’s parent company settled out of court.)

“The level of exploitation against women is staggering,” says Orner, especially when it’s further enabled by social media platforms like Instagram, Tumblr, and TikTok. “You are being exploited by companies and doing their work when you make videos promoting them and [don’t] get paid,” she explains. “There are these armies of young girls advertising for these evil companies who are just laughing all the way to the bank.”

The Bachelor Just Broke All the Biggest Rules

Atop the chain of command is Stephan Marsan, CEO and son of company founder Silvio. Unlike his brand, the younger Marsan doesn’t have much of a digital footprint. “He has no online presence at all.” Orner tells VF. “I mean, there are literally three photos of this man online, and they’re all in our film—and all pretty terrible. This man does not want to be known. He’s very comfortable, though, hanging out with young girls in his store, looking at photos that he makes them take and send to him and senior management of, not only their full bodies, but also their chest and their feet. So there’s something really, really wrong here.” In the documentary, a former employee claims to have seen Marsan save such images to his phone.

Marsan, who declined to participate in the documentary and has yet to publicly address allegations of wrongdoing at his company, prefers to keep his inclinations to himself—that is, when he’s not displaying his personal copies in stores of Atlas Shrugged , which one talking head referred to as “the Bible of Brandy Melville.” Marsan’s favorite book inspired a sub-brand called John Galt, named after Ayn Rand’s Objectivist hero . “He’s an avowed libertarian,” says Orner. “Nothing wrong with people’s political choices, but when you have a massive, hundreds-of-million-dollars global business, and you constantly say you don’t believe in tax, I would say, Well, somebody should investigate that. They are screaming out to get in some serious trouble.” In the film, an anonymous source alleges Marsan talked about not paying taxes. Then again, she states, “They are racist, sexist, antisemitic. They exploit young girls. And that’s really just the tipping point.”

The most insidious aspect of Marsan’s alleged toxicity lies within “Brandy Melville gags,” a group chat among top senior executives reportedly filled with vile, racist, and sexual jokes, as well as an image of Marsan photoshopped onto Hitler’s body. “I’ve never seen anything like that,” says Orner. “It’s disturbing and dangerous and disgusting and juvenile.” Deciding how much of the text chain to include in the doc was a delicate matter. “We went pretty hard, pulled back a little bit,” the director explains. “We were working with HBO and at one point I was like, ‘But I don’t want it to be so people aren’t shocked.’ And they were like, ‘It’s so shocking.’ I was a bit immune to it because I’d seen so much.”

Larger questions linger about Marsan, whom one former employee compares to Mussolini, and the company as a whole. “There are pending lawsuits . The two Italian men who spoke anonymously in the film revealed a lot about [Marsan]. I knew he would say he wouldn’t respond to our request for interviews. That’s their style—they don’t talk, they hope it just goes away. With someone like that, everything they do is indefensible, and I feel like they would just lie.”

Given the chance to pose one question to Marsan, Orner knows what she would ask: “What does he think his teenage daughter is going to feel growing up in this environment? Because from what I’ve been told, she’s not a Brandy girl. She wouldn’t fit into their clothing. She’s not that vibe. How tough would it be for a teenage girl to grow up in that environment and not be a part of it?”

Given how low of a profile Marsan keeps, Orner says she initially struggled to find young women eager to share their experiences with the company. “I’ve done films in war zones with refugees, and this was the hardest film to find participants [for],” she explains. “I reached out to hundreds of young women, and a lot of them didn’t want to be a part of it. The main thing they said was that they’re scared of retribution, they’re scared of Stephan. So the young women who are in this film are the absolute heroes of this story.”

The documentary has made a splash since its SXSW premiere, with TikToks featuring the documentary’s key art earning more than 3.6 million combined views, according to the filmmaker, and opening the floodgates for other accounts of mistreatment at Brandy Melville. “I’ve been getting a lot of Instagram messages from ex-employees of Brandy,” says Orner. “Obviously it’s too late to be in the film, but it’s fantastic that these women who are in the film have now emboldened other people to talk about it. Wouldn’t it be great if instead of making TikToks about wanting to buy stuff, which is what a lot of young girls do, if they turned it into, Let’s tell stories about my experience at Brandy Melville? They should create another wave of this conversation.”

The film acknowledges that we’ve largely become comfortable with the reckless nature of major corporations, and thus immune to the scandals that can ensue. But Orner hopes her documentary will cut through the noise. “It’s a bit like climate change—you can’t fix it overnight,” says the director. Though she points to organizations like Remake as resources, the easiest way to fight places like Brandy, she continues, is obvious: “Just buy less. The consumer has all the power.”

'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. Is Temu legit? Everything to know before you place your first order

jada-jones

By now, you've probably heard of an e-commerce site called Temu . The Chinese-owned digital marketplace dominated the ad space during this year's Super Bowl, and online digital creators frequently post the items they purchased from the site. So, you might be wondering what the website is all about and if you should do the same. According to Statista, Temu sees over 30 million new downloads every month, making it the number one shopping app in the App Store and Play Store.

Also: Temu vs. Amazon: Which shopping site is best for your buying needs?

If you've hesitated to place an order, it may be because you're unsure if the items are real, how long they take to get to your door, and whether they're good quality. After all, how good can a $1 handbag even be? Well, look no further because this article addresses all the questions you might have about Temu. Let's get into it.

What is Temu?

Temu is an online shopping megastore that offers just about any product you can imagine. You can buy car accessories, clothing, kitchen appliances, electronics, outdoor furniture, power tools, baby clothes, and everything in between.

Also:  I bought some off-brand geeky stuff from Temu (and wasn't mad about it)

Temu's stand-out feature is that many of the site's products are incredibly cheap. You can buy shoes for $15, necklaces for $1, and wireless keyboards for $10. In fact, whatever you can think of is probably on Temu for less than $50.

Some people compare Temu to sites like Shein, Wish, and AliExpress, but Temu is a little different. Shein primarily focuses on fashion and clothing items, while customers can buy almost anything on Temu. Wish and AliExpress are known for having lower-quality items, longer shipping times, and a shorter item return window.

Temu launched in late 2022 and quickly rose to the top spot in the App Store and Play Store's shopping categories. People found out about Temu from ads and were attracted to the site's low prices.

Is Temu a legitimate website?

It depends on your definition of 'legitimate'. Yes, most of the products on Temu are real, as in, you will receive them, and it takes about 10 days before they reach your doorstep.

But any tech products you order on Temu are not name-brand unless they have a blue checkmark on their product listing. You can buy items like laptops, smartphones, and tablets, but they're from lesser-known manufacturers.

Also: Beware of these popular Temu scams circulating social media

Last year, an HP representative told ZDNET that the company could not verify that the HP products on Temu were "from an authorized reseller or are authentic HP devices." Since ZDNET's inquiry, there are no products on Temu advertised as HP products.

Some customers say the items they ordered look slightly different than they did on the website or were lower quality than they expected.

Is it safe to buy from Temu?

I can't definitively tell you that it's totally safe or unsafe to buy items from Temu. However, I can suggest some safeguards that you should use when buying from Temu and from any other online retailer.

  • If you have an iPhone, consider using the " Hide My Email " feature when you sign up for a Temu account. This feature generates a random email address and will forward messages to your iCloud email. If you are receiving too many spam messages to the hidden email address, you can easily deactivate it.
  • If you don't have an iPhone, I suggest creating a separate email address for websites you don't fully trust or don't want messages from them clogging your real email address.
  • Don't ever link your bank account or debit card to an online retailer. In the event of hacking, your payment information can be compromised. Instead, consider buying and using Visa gift cards, or pay with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal.

What can I expect when I place an order?

Buying items from Temu follows the same formula as buying from any e-commerce site. You find things you like, add them to your cart, then check out.

However, there is one caveat before you purchase your items: you must have at least $10 worth of items in your cart before you can check out. Temu says the $10 minimum is to cover shipping fees for users who want free shipping.

If your items arrive late, Temu offers a $5 credit for packages purchased with standard shipping. The company will credit you $13 for packages purchased with express shipping that  arrive late .

Also: Amazon's new AI tool lets sellers create listings using just a URL

In other cases, the items can arrive on time, can be decent or good quality, and can be exactly how they look on Temu's website. Product quality can be unpredictable, which is not so different from offerings on other online stores.

If you receive your items and they don't look like their online listing, or they arrive damaged, or they don't arrive at all, your order is eligible for Temu's  Purchase Protection Program . This program guarantees your money back with a full refund if you return your items within 90 days of purchase.

Item prices on Temu are constantly fluctuating. If you buy an item and it decreases in price after your purchase, you can request a price adjustment. After you request a price adjustment, the difference will be available on your account as a Temu credit within minutes.

Why is Temu controversial?

Temu was accused by the US government of potential data risks after its sister site, e-commerce platform Pinduoduo, was suspended by Google for containing malware. However, according to  CNBC , analysts say Temu is less of a threat, and the risks associated with Pinduoduo were targeted at Chinese users.

Additionally, the US House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party published a report that states Temu does not take the necessary steps to ensure the products on the site comply with the Uyghur Forced Labor Act .

The same report asserts that Temu exploits a US commerce loophole that allows the company to avoid paying tariffs and complying with US commerce laws and regulations.

Are the products on Temu good quality?

Temu is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has an average rating of two-and-a-half out of five stars. Many recent complaints about Temu on the BBB website say that items never arrived or, if they did, took weeks or even months to arrive.

Also: Reddit's new paid ads look exactly like user posts

On social media, particularly on TikTok , many people are pleased with their Temu purchases. From little gadgets and household items to clothes and shoes, Temu is one of TikTok's popular obsessions.

I've tried products from Temu, and I encountered minimal problems. Of course, some items are cheaply made, but that's to be expected for a $1 to $3 item. However, generally, the items on Temu are what you would expect them to be.

Which products should I avoid on Temu?

The answer to this question is a personal one. At ZDNET, we've only tested tech-related items from Temu. One of ZDNET's contributing experts, David Gewirtz, bought a handheld gaming console that claimed to have 27,000 retro games installed on it.

However, upon using the console, David found that none of the games were actually downloaded, and the product listing was misleading.

Also: I tried to return something to Temu. Here's what happened

I've tested a pair of earbuds and headphones and a wireless keyboard and mouse from Temu, and they all worked as expected. Of course, they were of lower quality, and you could surely find better quality tech items elsewhere.

However, I've purchased many AirPods cases and iPhone cases from Temu and have been pleasantly surprised. The cases are usually of great quality in color, fit, and durability.

So, the best advice we can give you is to stay away from electronics and big-ticket items and go for accessories and little gadgets.

Is Temu a Chinese company?

Temu's parent company is PDD Holdings, a multinational commerce group headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. PDD Holdings owns Temu and its sister company, Pinduoduo.

However, it's a little difficult to accurately pin down Temu's exact origins.  In a February 2023 SEC 6-K filing , Pinduoduo Inc. changed its name to PDD Holdings in a special resolution. The company also moved its principal executive offices from Shanghai, China, to Dublin, Ireland.

The executive office relocation isn't necessarily a red flag, as many tech companies -- including American ones -- move to Ireland because of the country's low corporate tax rates .

Also:  I tried 4 tech products from Temu. Here's how it went

Temu says the company was founded in Boston in 2022, but the site's 'About Us' page does not mention its parent company, according to The Washington Post . Temu's Boston office is not a warehouse full of products, but more than likely is the central office that's connected to Temu's other offices worldwide.

According to the Boston Globe , Temu chose to set up camp in Boston partially because of its proximity to Canada, where the company recently opened another office.

Does Temu produce its products ethically?

According to Retail Insider , Temu's reverse-manufacturing model helps the company decrease waste by more accurately gauging customers' desired products.

Also: You can use your Amazon Prime benefits on other online shopping sites now - here's how

Temu's Third Party Code of Conduct stresses that the company has a zero-tolerance policy for vendors that use forced labor to manufacture products. All Temu vendors must comply with local wage and hour laws, and their working conditions must be safe and non-abusive.

However, the US House Select Committee's report states that Temu does not have an auditing or compliance program to ensure sellers remain in compliance with its Code of Conduct.

If you're wondering if Temu is environmentally ethical, that's a trickier topic. Sites like Temu, Shein, and AliExpress say they're committed to environmental sustainability by digitalizing the economy, cutting supply chain waste, and offsetting carbon emissions.

Also: Is TikTok Shop safe?

But many of these companies also distribute products containing harmful chemicals that eventually end up in landfills . These companies also claim to offset their emissions by purchasing carbon credits to fund sustainability initiatives. But how, when, and where these carbon credits help the environment is unclear.

Additionally, the US House Select Committee's report says that Temu does not properly ensure its products are not the result of forced labor. It's illegal to sell items in the US that come from China's Xinjiang region .

China's Xinjiang region has a convoluted and violent history between the Chinese government and the Uyghur people. It is common for items manufactured in this region to be the product of forced labor.

Why is Temu so cheap?

According to Temu, the items on the site are so cheap because the supply chain runs directly from consumers to sellers. Without a middleman, Temu can slash prices. However, the exclusive use of third-party sellers raises questions about Temu's ethics.

Does Temu steal or sell your data?

All e-commerce apps collect data when you create an account and visit the app's home page. This data can range from your precise physical location, address, and device ID, and onto your search history, payment information, and contacts.

Some apps use this data to track you across apps and websites, to understand performance, and to target you with ads.

Some of this data is linked to your identity, and some isn't -- the connection depends on the app you're using. In recent years, people have been increasingly concerned about how their data is being stored, and are wary specifically of data storage by Chinese-based apps.

Also: Is Temu safe? Why its single-layer security should be a red flag to shoppers

According to Temu's privacy policy , the company does not "sell" your data -- for money, at least. But Temu does share your information with shipping affiliates, marketing providers, and consumer research companies, which in turn, makes Temu money.

Temu also "shares" your data with third-party advertising, marketing, and analytics companies to target you with ads. Temu acknowledges in its privacy policy that this transfer of data can be considered "selling" your data under applicable laws.

Although concerns about sharing your data with Temu might be valid, it's important to remember that apps can and do collect and store your data with few limits, as US citizens' user data is not federally protected under a singular law . As a result, data collection remains unregulated in most states.

Because American user data remains federally unregulated, Temu might access your credit history , Walmart might collect your biometric information (fingerprints, face geometry, and retina imagery), and Amazon might collect your voice recordings when you speak to Alexa.

As Americans' user data is not wholly protected, it's up to the individual to decide how much of their data they want to relinquish -- and which platforms they want to give it to.

Remember, when you sign up for an account for any platform, you are agreeing to the company's privacy policy. So, Temu is not "stealing" your data if you willingly sign up and purchase items.

Bottom line: if you don't consent to this kind of data collection, stay away from Temu.

Should I buy solar eclipse glasses from Temu?

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) warned consumers to refrain from buying solar eclipse glasses from online retailers like Amazon, Temu, and Shein. The AAS says consumers may be looking for the best deal or the lowest prices, but their eye safety could be compromised as a result.

Instead, the AAS recommends you buy solar eclipse glasses from companies they are confident sell solar eclipse glasses that are up to standard .

Is Temu a good company to buy from?

Online shopping can be a gamble. Fake reviews are littered across American retailers, such as  Amazon and Walmart , which damage consumers' trust in online stores.

Also: TikTok bans explained: Everything you need to know

Packages can be lost in transit, stolen from your doorstep, broken during the shipping process, or your item can show up looking completely different than it did online.

Temu's standard shipping policy in the US is free, but your items aren't expected to ship for seven to 15 business days. Temu says that if your package never arrives, or you're told it's been delivered but hasn't been, you should contact customer service within 90 days of purchase.

Elisa Jordana, 35, a former employee of “The Howard Stern Show,” has gone viral on social media for a bizarre video incident that culminated with her getting arrested hours later.

When The Post reached out to Jordana for comment, she replied, “It was the second worst day of my life besides losing my dog Kermit. Lost everything in a day.”

On Monday, Jordana was filming a YouTube livestream in Palm Beach, Florida, when she had a violent altercation with her reported boyfriend, identified as Zscorro. The video is titled, “Not Doing Good.”

Earlier in the two-hour stream, Jordana cried and claimed that Zscorro – who is reportedly her boyfriend, and has been in her past videos – sent thousands of dollars to another woman.

Zscorro’s alleged affair partner, Sara, called into the livestream. Jordana threatened to post Sara’s nudes online, while Sara asked her not to.

When Zscorro — who sat next to Jordana in the car — interjected into the two women’s conversation, Jordana punched him in the arm.

After he said, “Sara, I’m sorry about this,” Jordana smacked him in the face and told him, “Don’t f–king talk!”

“She just like, almost broke my nose,” Zscorro said, adding, “F–k you, c–t!”

He said to Jordana, “ ‘Pull over dumb c–t.’ ” He said that he would “f–king deck” her if she touched him again, all while the livestream was still broadcasting the video to viewers.

Zscorro then pulled Jordana’s hair before he forced her out of the vehicle.

Per an arrest record obtained by Page Six, hours after the video went online, Jordana was arrested by the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office and charged with felony battery for the incident.

The Bizarre Chinese Murder Plot Behind Netflix’s ‘3 Body Problem’

Lin Qi, a billionaire who helped produce the science-fiction hit, was poisoned to death by a disgruntled executive. His attacker now faces the death penalty.

A man in a black sweater and white T-shirt sits at a conference room desk behind a silver laptop.

By David Pierson

Lin Qi was a billionaire with a dream. The video game tycoon had wanted to turn one of China’s most famous science-fiction novels, “The Three-Body Problem,” into a global hit. He had started working with Netflix and the creators of the HBO series “Game of Thrones” to bring the alien invasion saga to international audiences.

But Mr. Lin did not live to see “ 3 Body Problem ” premiere on Netflix last month, drawing millions of viewers.

He was poisoned to death in Shanghai in 2020, at age 39, by a disgruntled colleague, in a killing that riveted the country’s tech and video-gaming circles where he had been a prominent rising star. That colleague, Xu Yao, a 43-year-old former executive in Mr. Lin’s company, was last month sentenced to death for murder by a court in Shanghai, which called his actions “extremely despicable.”

The court has made few specific details public, but Mr. Lin’s killing was, as a Chinese news outlet put it, “as bizarre as a Hollywood blockbuster.” Chinese media reports, citing sources in his company and court documents, have described a tale of deadly corporate ambition and rivalry with a macabre edge. Sidelined at work, Mr. Xu reportedly exacted vengeance with meticulous planning, including by testing poisons on small animals in a makeshift lab. (He not only killed Mr. Lin, but also poisoned his own replacement.)

Mr. Lin had spent millions of dollars in 2014 buying up copyrights and licenses connected to the original Chinese science-fiction book, “The Three-Body Problem,” and two others in a trilogy written by the Chinese author Liu Cixin. “The Three-Body Problem” tells the story of an engineer, called upon by the Chinese authorities to look into a spate of suicides by scientists, who discovers an extraterrestrial plot. Mr. Lin had wanted to build a franchise of global television shows and films akin to “Star Wars” and centered on the novels.

Mr. Lin would eventually link up with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of the television series “Game of Thrones,” to work on the Netflix project. Mr. Lin’s gaming company, Youzu Interactive, which goes by Yoozoo in English, is no stranger to the HBO hit; its best-known release is an online strategy game based on the show called “Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming.”

Mr. Lin’s fate would change when he hired Mr. Xu, a lawyer, in 2017 to head a subsidiary of Yoozoo called The Three-Body Universe that held the rights to Mr. Liu’s novels. But not long afterward, Mr. Xu was demoted and his pay was cut, apparently because of poor performance. He became furious, according to the Chinese business magazine Caixin.

As Mr. Xu plotted his revenge, Caixin reported, he built a lab in an outlying district of Shanghai where he experimented with hundreds of poisons he bought off the dark web by testing them on dogs and cats and other pets. Caixin said Mr. Xu was both fascinated and inspired by the American hit TV series “Breaking Bad,” about a cancer-stricken chemistry teacher who teaches himself to make and sell methamphetamine, eventually becoming a drug lord.

Between September and December 2020, Mr. Xu began spiking beverages such as coffee, whiskey and drinking water with methylmercury chloride and bringing them into the office, Caixin reported, citing court documents. The report’s details could not be independently confirmed.

Calls to Yoozoo and the Shanghai court went unanswered. Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“The plot is as bizarre as a Hollywood blockbuster, and the technique is professional enough to be called the Chinese version of ‘Breaking Bad,’” Phoenix News, a Chinese news outlet, said last month.

According to a story by The Hollywood Reporter in January, Mr. Benioff said the killing was “certainly disconcerting.” “When you work in this business, you’re expecting all sorts of issues to arise. Somebody poisoning the boss is not generally one of them,” he was quoted as saying.

Police arrested Mr. Xu on Dec. 18, 2020, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court said on its official WeChat account as it announced the verdict and sentencing. Mr. Xu reportedly declined to confess to the crime and did not disclose what poison he had used, complicating doctors’ efforts to save Mr. Lin’s life.

The court said that Mr. Xu had plotted to poison Mr. Lin and four other people over an office dispute. Its post included a picture of a bespectacled Mr. Xu in the courtroom wearing an oversized beige cardigan surrounded by three police officers. The statement said more than 50 people, including members of Mr. Xu’s and Mr. Lin’s family, attended the sentencing.

The Three-Body Universe, the Yoozoo subsidiary, did not respond to a request for comment, but its chief executive, Zhao Jilong, posted on his WeChat account, “Justice has been served,” according to Chinese state media.

Before his untimely death, Mr. Lin was something of a celebrity in the world of young Chinese entrepreneurs. He had built his fortune in the early 2010s, riding a wave of popularity for mobile games. His bid to popularize Mr. Liu’s novels was a rare attempt to export Chinese popular culture — something that has eluded China as its government yearns to wield the same soft power the United States commands with its movies, music and sports stars.

Six years after “The Three-Body Problem” was first published in 2008, an English version translated by Ken Liu was released to widespread acclaim. The book won the Hugo Award, a major science-fiction prize, for best novel. It counted Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg among its fans.

While Netflix is not available in China, “3 Body Problem” has still set off a backlash among Chinese viewers who have been able to access the platform by using virtual private networks, or who have seen pirated versions of the show. Users on Chinese social media expressed anger that the Netflix adaptation Westernized aspects of the story, and said the show sought to demonize some of the Chinese characters.

Even the People’s Liberation Army’s propaganda wing has weighed in on the series. In an editorial published on Saturday on its website, China Military Online, it called the Netflix series an example of American “cultural hegemony.”

“It can be clearly seen that after the United States seized this popular intellectual property with its superpower strength, it wanted to transform and remake it,” the editorial said. “The purpose was to eliminate as much as possible the reputation of modern China.”
