The story behind Ariana Grande ‘s “7 Rings” is one of modern pop legend: On a particularly difficult day after breaking up with fiancé Pete Davidson, Ari took six of her best friends to Tiffany & Co. and treated her besties to a champagne-fueled shopping spree that resulted in the purchase of seven diamond engagement-turned-friendship rings. On the chauffeured drive back to Ariana’s sprawling New York penthouse, singer-songwriter Njomza suggested: “Hey. We need to write a song about this” — and the biggest pop banger of 2019 (thus far) was born.

The song — which was released as the second single from Ariana’s fifth studio album Thank U, Next — was the pop superstar’s second consecutive No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 , where it reigned atop the chart for a total of five weeks in a row. Cleverly interpolating “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music , “7 Rings” is a grandiose flex all about healing from heartbreak with the help of the shiny baubles that have always been a girl’s best friend (not to mention a girl’s actual best friends).

Been through some bad shit, I should be a sad bitch Who woulda thought it’d turn me to a savage? Rather be tied up with calls and not strings Write my own checks like I write what I sing, yeah (Yeah)

My wrist, stop watchin’, my neck is flossin’ Make big deposits, my gloss is poppin’ You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (Yeah)

I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (Yeah)

Wearing a ring, but ain’t gon’ be no “Mrs.” Bought matching diamonds for six of my bitches I’d rather spoil all my friends with my riches Think retail therapy my new addiction

Whoever said money can’t solve your problems Must not have had enough money to solve ’em They say, “Which one?” I say, “Nah, I want all of ’em” Happiness is the same price as red-bottoms

My smile is beamin’, my skin is gleamin’ The way it shine, I know you’ve seen it (You’ve seen it) I bought a crib just for the closet Both his and hers, I want it, I got it, yeah

I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it (Baby) You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it (Oh yeah) I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (Yeah)

Yeah, my receipts, be lookin’ like phone numbers If it ain’t money, then wrong number Black card is my business card The way it be settin’ the tone for me I don’t mean to brag, but I be like, “Put it in the bag,” yeah When you see them racks, they stacked up like my ass, yeah Shoot, go from the store to the booth Make it all back in one loop, give me the loot Never mind, I got the juice Nothing but net when we shoot Look at my neck, look at my jet Ain’t got enough money to pay me respect Ain’t no budget when I’m on the set If I like it, then that’s what I get, yeah

I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it (Yeah) I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it (Oh yeah, yeah) You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (Yeah)

How To Deal With Your Problems

Problem-solving doesn’t have to be stressful. When we create a step-by-step plan, we can gracefully work through even the toughest issues.

Do you have a problem you’d rather not think about? Perhaps you keep moving it to tomorrow’s to-do list. And when tomorrow comes, you do it again – and again.

Before you know it, the problem has become a giant monster that gets more vicious with each passing day. It’s screaming to be solved, but now it’s almost too overwhelming to deal with.

However, tackling a problem doesn’t have to be so stressful. When you have the right tools in your problem-solving toolbox, you can handle most problems with more success and far less stress.

5 steps for dealing with a problem

Whether it’s a relationship problem , a financial problem, or a work problem, problems are a regular part of life.

Some problems can feel overwhelmingly complicated. But when you divide problem-solving into actionable steps, it becomes much easier to tackle.

Here are 5 steps for dealing with a problem:

  • Identify the problem . In order to find a solution, it can help to identify the root cause of the problem instead of just the symptoms of the issue. To do this, keep asking “why?” until you get to the root. It can also help to journal about how you are feeling and consider where your stress is coming from.
  • Brainstorm potential solutions . There may be several solutions to your problem. List the pros and cons of each one. Take your time with this. You may even ask advice from a few friends. This will help you weigh in multiple perspectives.
  • Choose the best solution. Consider solution is the most practical, sustainable, and most likely to succeed. Once you’ve chosen a solution, direct your energy into your choice.
  • Create a step-by-step plan . Now that you’ve chosen a solution, list out a step-by-step plan to get it done. You can set project goals (e.g. do this task and then this task, etc.) or time goals (work on this task for 4 hours). Taking manageable steps is important, because trying to tackle the problem all at once creates mental chaos and anxiety.
  • Don’t procrastinate . Putting the problem off until later can create more anxiety. Procrastination also increases your problems if you’re under a time constraint. For instance, if you have to write a 2,000-word report in a week, don’t wait until the night before to start it.

Tips for becoming a better problem solver

Below are several tips for better problem-solving.

  • Be confident . As best you can, try to be confident that there’s a solution right around the corner (you just have to find it). 2018 research shows that your motivation increases when you’re confident that you will get the desired reward or outcome. Developing this type of positive thinking often first requires building your self-esteem , so that you are confident in your problem-solving abilities.
  • Be proactive. Always think ahead and try to anticipate any potential obstacles. Let’s say that you have a big math exam today and a limited amount of time to take it. Be sure to bring extra pencils in case one breaks.
  • Consider it a challenge. See your problem as a challenge rather than an annoyance or a difficulty. This helps put you in the driver’s seat. The ancient Greek philosophy of stoicism tells us to focus on what we can control and to turn every obstacle into an opportunity for growth.
  • Ask the experts. A good problem-solver doesn’t always try to figure things out alone. Sometimes you need help and expert advice. For instance, if you’re trying to fix an appliance, call someone you know who’s done it before.
  • Don’t complain, just start moving. Complaining uses a lot of energy and makes you feel even worse. Let’s say you have three meetings to attend in one day. Instead of complaining about how much you have to do, start working on a time management solution.
  • Take responsibility. Sometimes, our plans fail, and that’s OK. This is a part of life. Successful people get back on their feet and try again. Look for the lessons in each mistake or perceived failure. Be careful not to blame another person, because this makes you feel less in control.

Certain personality traits can also come in handy. Authors of a 2021 study with college students suggest that a few characteristics are helpful toward developing strong problem-solving skills:

  • thirst for knowledge
  • positive attitude
  • action-oriented temperament

Although these traits may come more easily to some, anyone can develop their problem-solving skills with a little practice.

Why being a good problem solver is important

Good problem-solving skills are a necessary and important part of daily life.

In fact, we solve problems every day without thinking much about it. For instance, maybe you’re at work and you suddenly realize there’s a rip in your pants. Or maybe you’re a nickel short for the vending machine. What do you do in these situations?

Everyday, we have to handle these little problems with creativity and patience .

When you build up the skills for solving small daily inconveniences, you’re preparing yourself for the times when you encounter a bigger life problem or task. This way, you have the confidence and motivation to work through your stress and grow from a challenging experience.

Problem-solving involves identifying the problem, developing possible solutions, and taking the appropriate course of action.

In many cases, problem-solving can be quite intuitive and not very difficult at all. And the more you practice your problem-solving skills, the more intuitive solutions become.

Steve Jobs, American entrepreneur and CEO of Apple, is quoted as saying, “When you first start off trying to solve a problem, the first solutions you come up with are very complex, and most people stop there. But if you keep going, and live with the problem and peel more layers of the onion off, you can often times arrive at some very elegant and simple solutions.”

The best part is that when you finally overcome a problem, it feels really good!

How to handle a problem you can’t solve

Featured Image

Life is hard. No one floats through the whole thing care-free,  drowning in love and friendship, having found passion and purpose, and in perfect health all the time! No, our boss can be unfair, our elderly parent may be sick, and the global pandemic is an ongoing challenge. Despite what is portrayed on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, we all have problems, big and small. Sometimes careful consideration can solve a problem, but what can we do when we come across an obstacle that we can’t solve?

First, tell somebody.  Verbalizing the challenge out loud can help you conceive the situation in different ways, and you may receive validation and empathy from the other person. It feels good to know that others see your problem, and perhaps have even gone through it themselves.

Communicate your needs.  Too many people think they need to “push through” or that they are the only one who can solve the problem. However, by letting others know that you are struggling at the moment you may receive help. Your co-worker may have the ability to assist you with that big project, but she has to know you need support first!

Get more information. Sometimes it is not the problem that is unsolvable, but that we lack the knowledge to solve it. Ask yourself, “Am I missing information that could create a solution?” If you are, try and get that info from online courses, books, or others who know more.

Keep it in perspective. We all know a problem doesn’t improve just because we worry about it. Try and use the 10/10/10 rule to guide your level of concern. Will this problem matter in 10 minutes? 10 months? 10 years?

Engage in self-care. Take moments for yourself to do things that you enjoy and that are relaxing. Keep in mind there is a difference between rejuvenating activities and mindless distractions. While there is nothing wrong with bingeing Netflix or playing on your phone, it won’t reinvigorate you like a mindful walk, gardening, or even singing a favourite song in the car. Don’t distract from the moment, engage with it, mindfully, on purpose, in the present and non-judgmentally. The problem will not go away, but you will set it down for a few minutes and be refreshed when you have to pick it up again.

Is this a system-level problem? Some problems are big, really big, like system-level big. Racism, sexism, poverty, homophobia, transphobia, access to medical care and healthy food, ageism and sizeism. This list is nowhere near exhaustive! These kinds of problems are not solved by individuals, if you are struggling with one or more of these, getting involved in advocacy will let you work towards change and provide comfort in knowing that others are working to make these issues disappear too.

Can the problem be solved right now? As humans, we crave certainty and stability and problems are harbingers of chaos and change. Social workers say, “we must learn to sit in the mess.” This gives us a moment to separate from the issue and let some time pass in the hopes external factors (like a promotion or moving) will shift, allowing new options to present themselves. Sitting in a mess is uncomfortable; often we can only breathe, tell others, engage in self-care, and wait. And wait. And wait. In the meantime, repeat to yourself, “I’m doing the best I can.” And believe it.

5 Reasons You're Not Solving Your Problems

The key to solving problems isn’t about the problem but your approach..

  • What Is Anxiety?
  • Find counselling to overcome anxiety
  • There are problems that we are aware of but, for varying reasons, don't try to solve. Usually, the underlying drivers are emotional.
  • The most common sources are feeling overwhelmed, not agreeing there is a problem, having vague solutions, and needing more accountability.
  • The keys to success are identifying the underlying problem and taking actionable steps toward changing your approach.

We all have problems we’re aware of but ignore: The argument with your partner on Saturday night about money gets swept under the rug on Sunday morning. You’ve been unhappy with your work schedule for the past year, but you’ve taken no steps to talk to your supervisor or look for another job.

Life is filled with problems, and while the content constantly changes, our way of approaching and resolving them is often set, and our perspectives or emotions get in the way of moving forward. Following are five common reasons why we don’t solve some of our problems, and the antidotes:

1. It’s not your problem.

Your partner is worried about the balance on the credit card and wants to set up a tight budget to pay it off, but you’re okay carrying a balance even if there is interest. She sees a problem where you think there’s none.

This is common with couples. One partner is sensitive to specific issues that the other couldn’t care less about. It’s easy to argue about whose reality is right, which goes nowhere, and then sweep under the rug to avoid having another argument. The unsolved problem is like a landmine you eventually step on, starting the cycle over again.

Solution: The challenge here is to be sensitive to your partner’s concerns while not grudgingly caving in. Instead, you want to look for win-win compromises: Yes, you can work up a budget and work to pay down the balance in six months instead of one.

2. You get overwhelmed.

You’re considering applying for a new job, but you go on job websites and feel overwhelmed—so many jobs, different requirements, and complicated applications. You avoid.

Solution: To avoid being overwhelmed, start with a clear goal to help you sort priorities. If you need help defining it, talk to someone—a good friend, your partner, or a counselor—who can ask the hard questions to help you refine your objectives.

Next, you want to have ways of lowering your anxiety . Here it may help to have a friend or partner walk through websites with you, or maybe you decide to only work on applications for a limited time each day. You want to keep moving forward but at a manageable pace.

3. You’re self-critical, have low self-esteem, and are depressed.

You’re thinking of talking to your supervisor about your work schedule but feel intimidated and worried that you wouldn’t express yourself well. You give up on applying for jobs because you tell yourself you’re probably not qualified. Your critical voice puts pressure on you to solve the problem and do it right. Low self-esteem tells you you’re not good enough or will mess it up. And your depression is saying, "Why bother? It won’t change."

Solution: Rather than letting these voices run you, you need to see how they sabotage your efforts, overriding your rational brain. Time to push back, take baby steps toward your goal despite how you think and feel, and seek help to deal with the underlying problem.

4. Your solution is too vague; your expectations are unrealistic.

You and your partner agree to cut back on expenses, but even after a month, not much has changed. You go gangbusters applying for jobs for a few weeks, but you give up when you don’t hear anything back. Agreeing to "cut back on expenses" is too vague; you both likely have different ideas about what that means. You're expecting a quick response on your applications while, in reality, they are stuck in some bureaucratic morass.

Solution: Good solutions are behavioral, detailed, and realistic—an agreed-upon budget and a reasonable timeline. But even seemingly solid plans are rarely one-and-done. This is about circling back, assessing, and finetuning. Checking in after a week to see how the budget is working. Sending a follow-up email to the employer after two weeks or revising your resume.

5. There’s no accountability and not enough support.

You need help holding your feet to the fire; you need accountability. You're trying to approach problems differently and are learning new skills, so you need support.

Solution: You and your partner sit down a week later and look at expenses. You role-play with a friend talking to your supervisor about the schedule, or your friend checks in with you about the job applications you’ve completed this week.

Embedded in problems is always something to learn—whether it's about changing a tire or filling out your taxes. But the biggest lessons are about learning how to run your life, handle problems differently, be proactive rather than reactive, and override those old childhood feelings of inadequacy. Realizing what keeps you from solving your problems takes you halfway toward solving them.

Here’s how to fix your iPhone if it’s stuck in SOS mode amid major cellular network outages

i Phone users have reported that their device is stuck on “SOS mode” which is preventing them from making calls or sending text messages amid a major cell phone outage Thursday affecting thousands of users across the US.

For affected iPhone users, the easiest workaround to get the smartphone working again is performing a hard reset — what Apple calls a “force restart” — according to the Daily Mail.

To do this, press and quickly release the volume up button, then quickly do the same to the volume down button before pressing and holding the side button, per Apple Support.

When the Apple logo appears, release the side button and restart the iPhone as usual.

SOS mode kicks in when a cellular connection has been severed, meaning users can only complete calls to emergency services.

iPhone models 13 or earlier won’t go into SOS mode amid the outage — rather, users will see a “no service” indicator instead, tech news website Laptop Mag reported.

Users can also switch to “Data Roaming” to regain service by toggling the feature under the “Cellular Data” tab in settings, according to the Daily Mail.

However, turning on the roaming feature enables the use of cellular data services outside of the coverage area of the home network — which often results in additional charges from mobile service providers.

Mass losses of cell connection were caused by outages across AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon around 4 a.m. EST Thursday.

AT&T seemed to have experienced the largest number of issues, with nearly 32,000 reports at around 4:30 a.m.,  according to data from DownDetector,   which tracks outages by collating status reports from sources including user-submitted errors on its platform.

More than 800 service outages were also reported on T-Mobile and Verizon, although a spokesperson for the latter put it down to users reporting problems trying to call people with other services.

Others reported issues on smaller carriers including Boost Mobile, Consumer Cellular, and Straight Talk Wireless.

The outage reportedly extends from New York, Boston, and Atlanta on the East Coast to Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco.

There were even outages reported in Montreal, Canada, though the cause of the issue remains unclear.

Here’s how to fix your iPhone if it’s stuck in SOS mode amid major cellular network outages
