Where to Buy The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition and Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien

There's a wonderful charm to tolkien's illustrations..

Seth G. Macy Avatar

It's a pretty great time to be a fan of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The Illustrated Edition of the Lord of the Rings saga, featuring original Tolkien illustrations in and among the story, is releasing later this year. If you prefer to eschew all those words and want to get right into the pictures, the new edition of Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien is for you. I'll be honest, I'm probably going to buy both, but that's just me, a man who cannot resist shiny things.

Where to Buy Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien

If you preorder from Amazon, you can save 10% off the MSRP for the hardcover edition.

Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien

Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien was originally published in the 1970s and contains original art by the Lord of the Rings author himself. This updated version in hardcover contains the same illustrations, but now comes in a very nice little slipcover case.

Where to Buy the Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition

Right now, you can get the regular hardcover Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition at Amazon, and better yet, it's on sale for 40% off its cover price.

The Lord of the Rings: Illustrated Edition

If you want to get the deluxe version, well... that's not quite as easy.

The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Deluxe Edition is limited to just 5,000 copies worldwide, and it's only coming out in the UK and Canada. Featuring "raised ribs on the spine and stamped in two foils," the pages of this massive tome, "are edged in gold," and the entire thing is "quarterbound in cloth and leather."

It comes in a slipcase and contains the Tolkien illustrations found in the regular Illustrated Edition, as well as "two poster-size, fold-out maps revealing all the detail of Middle-earth."

The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest book series ever created, and the non-deluxe hardcover Lord of the Rings Illustrated edition is coming out October 19, 2021. The edition includes original JRR Tolkien illustrations for the first time in any edition of the series since 1954.

The 1954 edition only features two illustrations from Tolkien, but this latest Lord of the Rings illustrated version has "30 other sketches, illustrations, and maps."

The art by Tolkien has appeared in print before, most notably the hardcover "Pictures by JRR Tolkien" first published in 1979 , the book itself a collection of illustrations printed in "a series of calendars" printed earlier in the 1970s.

It's a good time to be a Lord of the Rings fan. The upcoming Gollum game "puts the spotlight on an unlikely hero," and looks to be another solid entry into the pantheon of Lord of the Rings games.

The hardcover Lord of the Rings: Illustrated Edition has an MSRP of $75, but it's currently marked down 40%.

If you already preordered it at $75, you'll be charged the lower price. In fact, Amazon will honor whatever the lowest price is during a preorder period, provided you preorder on or before it hits that low price.

The lord of the rings (deluxe illustrated edition 2021).

Title: The Lord of the Rings Author: J.R.R.Tolkien Illustrator: J.R.R.Tolkien Published by: HarperCollins Year: 2021 Edition: Single volume deluxe illustrated edition 2021. 1st imp. Binding: Hardback in slipcase

The Lord of the Rings (Deluxe Illustrated Edition 2021)

The Lord of the Rings single-volume edition from 2021. This is the ‘deluxe’ version. Illustrated for the first time with Tolkien’s own pictures and sketches. Loose fold out maps. Separate facsimile ‘Mazarbul’ pages. I think you could properly describe this as ‘sumptuous’.

The Lord of the Rings (Deluxe Illustrated Edition 2021)

The font I've used for all the headings on this site is called Tolkienesque New and is inspired by the calligraphy of J.R.R.Tolkien himself. It has an extended character set and looks lovely even at very small sizes. You can find it, and my other Tolkien fonts, here .

Written in Russia, illustrated in Scotland, this new book will help your kids love the Book of Mormon

Tourist in the Moscow city center

It was a cold, dark day in Moscow, and Morgan Choi didn’t know what to do.

She’d come with her husband to Russia for his work but in so doing had left her own job behind. In a new country with no friends, no family, and a foreign environment, Choi felt lost.

She was no stranger to traveling for vacation and even moving to live in a new country (she and her husband had lived in Turkmenistan the year before). But this time was different. They’d been trying to grow their family, but it seemed like Choi would have to keep waiting to become a mother.

Morgan Choi Headshot (1).JPEG

So she decided to do the only thing that makes sense when the world brings you to your knees: she prayed to God to give her direction on what to do while living in this frigid new home. His answer was to write a book.

Choi had considered writing a book before. When she was a Sunday School teacher, she had noticed how plenty of people struggled to make sense of the overlapping timelines in the Book of Mormon. She’d even compiled a spreadsheet with different tabs for each story and drawn sketches of what happened at what time period. She had thought it would be interesting for someone to take these ideas and create an illustrated Book of Mormon Timeline book.

But she’d never really thought it would end up being her.

When You Give a Girl a Prompting

“I found myself with a lot of time. I was also struggling to know what to do with my life… . After praying for guidance, this book idea kept coming back to me,” Choi says. She continued to ponder the idea while trying to make new friends in her local congregation.

Choi remembers visiting a museum in Russia with her friend and fellow Church member. While wandering around the museum, the idea of writing a book popped up again and would not leave her mind.

“While explaining my plan to [my friend], I felt the Spirit very strongly. It was one of those moments when I felt a ‘burning in my bosom’ but also a recognition in my mind that this was an answer to my prayers for guidance,” Choi explains. “After hearing my plan, my friend grabbed me and pointed out that she was feeling the Spirit as well and that I needed to make this book! This experience was sort of a catalyst for getting me started, and it also strengthened my testimony in a Father in Heaven who loves each of us, knows the details of our lives, wants to see us succeed, answers our prayers, and knows our unique strengths.”

Choi took Heavenly Father’s answer to heart and began the long process of writing a book. She wrote almost the entire manuscript while living in Moscow. Despite the cold and gloomy weather outside, Choi felt the warmth of the light of Christ as she dedicated herself to her project.

“I dedicated entire days to breaking down the Book of Mormon book by book, chapter by chapter, and verse by verse,” Choi says. “I bought a large drawing pad and started sketching out drawings and putting scriptures I wanted to include in the book next to them. It was quite a process and there were many times I thought to myself: ‘The reason this book hasn’t been made before is because it’s so complex!’”

Perfecting the Illustrations

While working on the manuscript, Choi relied on her husband to check, edit, and verify her work. They both referred back to the Book of Mormon as they went, and it was a period of spiritual edification for Choi.

IMG_9450.jpg

As the technical side of her project was wrapping up, Choi had to decide who would bring her pencil sketches to life in a fully illustrated timeline. The obvious choice was Choi’s longtime friend Joy Nevada. Though they lived far apart, with Nevada in Scotland at the time, they were able to use technology to connect regularly and work on the project.

“I’ve always loved her style and asking her to be my illustrator was a no-brainer. I never even entertained the thought of a different illustrator,” Choi says.

The two women messaged each other daily with progress updates, finished layouts, and full-color spreads of their images.

Looking back at their work, Choi says, “I love so many [of our illustrations], but both Nevada and I would pick the picture of Riplakish from the Book of Ether [as our favorite]. He was a wicked, greedy king, and Nevada drew him sitting on top of gold and jewels. It’s quite lovely.”

Wicked King

A History Book for Kids and Adults Alike

While writing The Book of Mormon Timeline was an answer to Choi’s prayers for guidance, she hopes that the product of her efforts will help guide others on their spiritual journey.

“This book is for everyone!” she says. The fun, vibrant illustrations in the book make the war chapters more accessible for children. And other more doctrinally dense sections are infused with perspective, levity, and humor.

66A73A3D-33F0-4696-B38C-A2C4E233832C.jpg

The scripture references and detailed timeline can help adults who want to dive deeper into their Book of Mormon studies. Each page is a testament to what is possible through revelation and with God’s help. Essentially, Choi hopes that she and Nevada have created a book that everyone can learn from because, as she puts it, “When we understand the background of scriptures, the scriptures become more powerful to us.”

Choi’s book acts as her testimony of Jesus Christ and reminds her that He is always with us, even in the coldest of places. “Whether readers are members of the Church, non-members, children or adults, I want this book to help them gain testimonies of a loving Savior.”

Death and grief in Swedish children's books

by Uppsala University

grave

Death is blue, or a flying animal. This is how death is most commonly illustrated in Swedish children's literature, according to a new study from Uppsala University based on analyses of 62 books. Just 6 out of 10 books use the word "dead," which may be a problem.

"The actual word 'dead' comes up in about two thirds of the books . The others use metaphors such as 'fell asleep' or 'passed away,' which can make it difficult for children to understand and can even scare them. For example, a child could be afraid of sleeping, because someone who has 'fallen asleep' hasn't come back," says Rakel Eklund, Ph.D., specialist nurse and the researcher behind the study.

In her work as a researcher on children's grief , she often recommends adults to read books with children to help them begin talking about potentially difficult topics, such as death. To obtain a better overview of the existing literature, she enlisted a librarian at Uppsala City Library to help her search for books on the subject.

They found 110 titles and Eklund considered 62 of them suitable for her study. She analyzed hard facts such as author, publisher and date, as well as what the stories showed about the causes of death, funerals, the main character and the characteristics of the person who dies. The study also includes the process of grief following death. She has investigated the words used to describe death, grief and the person who has died.

Usually it is a pet or an older relative such as a grandparent who dies. Half the books mention causes of death, generally stillbirth or old age. The main character generally learns that someone has died by their mother telling them.

Most of the books include a grieving process. The most common way for the main character to cope with grief and other emotions is to be with family and friends and remember the deceased person together.

"It's important to give the reader a chance to follow the grieving process. This can teach children that grieving is something that comes and goes in life and that grief doesn't suddenly disappear or pass. The books I have looked at stand out in comparison with similar books from other European countries. Previous studies have indicated that far fewer children's books there describe a grieving process."

Eklund thinks it is a good thing there are so many children's books dealing with death, from different angles. One perspective she finds is lacking is stories where it is the child itself who is dying. Previous research shows that dying children want to have honest and open information about their own illness and impending death. Only four of the books analyzed describe this process.

"Since one purpose of the books is to help children to cope and to talk about death and grief, more books describing preparation for one's own death are needed. This would make it easier for both children and their parents and other significant adults reading to the child to have meaningful conversations about death and dying from the perspective of the dying person."

In cases where the books include funerals, they follow the Christian tradition with a church, a priest and a coffin. None of the books offered a perspective from any other world religion.

"It's problematic that the only religion reflected is Christianity. Death and grief are closely bound up with religious issues as they make us wonder why we live, why we die and what the meaning of it all is. Our society contains more philosophies of life and religions, and many people have beliefs of their own or no beliefs. I think children's book editors, publishers and authors of children 's books have work to do here," Eklund says.
