Urdu Literature

Urdu literature (Urdu: ادبیات اردو‎, “Adbiyāt-i Urdū”) is literature in the Urdu language. While it tends to be dominated by poetry, especially the verse forms of the ghazal غزل and nazm نظم, it has expanded into other styles of writing, including that of the short story, or afsana افسانہ .

Urdu is a language whose exceptionally complex linguistic and cultural history reflects the special position of Islam in the Indian subcontinent of South Asia. While linguistically related to Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, and the other languages of the Indo-Aryan family (whose classical representative is Sanskrit), Urdu is distinguished by the very high proportion of Perso-Arabic elements in its vocabulary. This Islamic cultural orientation is also reflected in its written form, which uses the Perso-Arabic script with appropriate modifications to mark distinctive Indic features such as retroflex and aspirated consonants.

While its origins elude precise definition, Urdu clearly began in medieval times from a mixture of the local Indian dialects of the Delhi region with the Persian spoken by the Muslim conquerors whose armies rapidly spread the new lingua franca across the subcontinent. Since Persian continued to be the preferred administrative and cultural language of the Delhi sultanate and the Mughal empire, it was only with the collapse of unitary Muslim political authority in the eighteenth century that Urdu came to be cultivated in northern India as a literary language for a courtly poetry that constitutes the classical heritage of Urdu literature.

From the early nineteenth century, when British colonial rule was extended across northern India, Urdu came increasingly to be used also as a written prose language. British policy itself favored the development of Urdu as an official bureaucratic medium, and Muslim writers took ample advantage of the opportunities provided by the colonial state for the production of textbooks, newspapers, and very varied prose writings. It is from this early modern period, when British India was the scene of the most intense debates about the definition of Islam in the modern world, that Urdu became a language of Islamic expression second only in international importance to Arabic.

Throughout the twentieth century Urdu successfully retained this role as an Islamic language while also developing as the medium of a modern secular literature much influenced by English. As an administrative and educational language, however, Urdu has progressively lost ground to modern standard Hindi, the rival Sanskritized language promoted as a replacement for Urdu by Hindu nationalists. Since independence from British rule in 1947, Urdu has thus increasingly become marginalized in its Indian homeland and identified with Pakistan. Although spoken there as a mother tongue only by Muslim immigrants from India and their descendants, Urdu is the official language of Pakistan, where languages like Punjabi, Sindhi, or Pashto have limited regional status only. As such, Urdu has been carried by the Pakistani diaspora to many other parts of the world, including the Middle East, Europe, and North America.

Urdu dictionaries of literary terms & a new arrival.

literature type meaning in urdu

THOMAS Roebuck compiled ‘An English and Hindoostanee naval dictionary of technical terms and sea phrases’. First published in 1811 from Calcutta (now Kolkata), it was Urdu’s first dictionary of technical terms, as Hindustani (with variant spellings) was one of the myriad names given to Urdu.

But it included common Urdu words and phrases, too, and the basic purpose of writing this dictionary was to help the officers of East India Company who worked on ships and needed to command the native Indians.

Later, some institutions and individuals — such as Delhi College, Rai Sohan Lal, Syed Hussain Bilgrami, Deccan’s Usmania University, Anjuman Taraqqi-i-Urdu, Karachi University, Majlis-i-Daftari Punjab, Urdu Science Board, Punjab University and National Language Authority — worked on coining the Urdu terminology and compiled thousands of Urdu equivalents of modern technical and scientific terms and presented them in, this goes without any exaggeration, hundreds of dictionaries. Dr Atash Durrani and Dr Abul Lais Siddiqi have compiled bibliographies of such works and the number goes well beyond 500.

As for literary terms, Urdu’s general dictionaries and technical books written on prosody, grammar and rhetoric served the purpose. Some works on Urdu prosody, such as Najm-ul- Ghani Rampuri’s Behr-ul-fasahat (1885) and Mirza Muhammad Askari’s Aaina-i-balaghat (1937), explained many other terms too in between explaining the prosodic and grammatical matters. Askari also appended an Urdu-English index of literary terms.

Captain G. D. Pybus, an officer in British India army, wrote a book on Urdu prosody in English and gave examples in Urdu script wherever necessary. The book includes a list of terms in Urdu script at the end. Titled A textbook of Urdu prosody and rhetoric, it was published from Lahore in 1924.

But it took quite long to compile an Urdu dictionary devoted entirely for literary terms. Let us have a quick look at Urdu dictionaries of literary terms before we discuss a new arrival.

Shear-o-qaafia (1952)

Compiled by Soofi Varsi Meeruthi, it is not a dictionary of literary terms in real sense, but it carries a chapter on terms used in poetry and poetics. It was reprinted from Lahore in 1991 by Maktaba-i-Aaliya.

Rumooz-i-shear-o-sukhan (1965)

According to Dr Atash Durrani, it was compiled by Sheikh Rafiuddin Ahmed Rafi.

Istelahaat-i-drama (1984)

Compiled by Dr Muhammad Aslam Qureshi and published by the National Language Authority, Islamabad, it explains the terms related to drama and its criticism.

Kashshaaf-i-tanqeedi istelahaat (1985)

Compiled by Abul Ejaz Hafeez Siddiqi and published by the National Language Authority, Islamabad, it is an Urdu-Urdu dictionary of literary terms. Though its scope is not too vast, it amply explains certain literary terms with quotations from original works, necessary references and bibliography. A brief English-Urdu glossary of terms at the back of the book makes it more useful.

Farhang-i-adabi istelahaat (1986)

Prof Kaleemuddin Ahmed, a well-known scholar of Urdu from India, compiled it and it was published by Bureau for Promotion of Urdu, Delhi.

Prof Ahmed had profoundly studied western literatures and the book contains many modern literary terms that were new to Urdu at that time. He not only explained them quite well but also coined new Urdu terms and gave quotations from master pieces of English literature, thereby making it a unique work. It is basically an English-Urdu dictionary of literary terms and explains the terms at length.

Adabi istelahaat (1993)

A popular work that has recently been reprinted for the fourth time by the National Book Foundation, it is intended for students. Written by Prof Anwer Jamal, the book gives English equivalents while explaining Urdu terms in Urdu.

Farhang-i-istelahaat-i-uloom-i-adabi (1996)

A scholarly work by Dr Sajidullah Tafheemi, the book concentrates more on prosodic and grammatical terms rather than literary ones. Iran-Pakistan Institute of Persian Studies, Islamabad, published it.

Muntakhab adabi istelahaat (2005)

A commendable work explaining in detail the modern literary terms in Urdu with English equivalents, it is compiled by such renowned literary figures as Muhammad Saleem-ur-Rahman and Suhail Ahmed Khan. Lahore’s G.C. University published it.

Tanqeedi istelahaat (2011)

Another good job done by another well-known literary figure, the book published by Sang-i-Meel and compiled by Dr Saleem AKhter explains in detail a large number of old and new literary terms.

Adabi istelahaat (2018)

Dr Haroon-ur-Rasheed Tabassum taught at Government Ambala Muslim College, Sargodha. He is a prolific writer and has compiled and written about 100 books.

This prolificacy must take its toll as is evident from his latest work, published by the Book Corner, Jehlum. Though the book may be helpful for students, it would have been more so had the literary terms listed been in alphabetic order. Also, no proper references are given and a list of works cited is missing altogether.

One feels that keeping in view the long history, as discussed above, any new book on literary terms needs to be more comprehensive and more authentic rather than being just a commercial venture.

Urdu Literature in The Digital Age: Opportunities and Challenges

  • May 11, 2023

literature type meaning in urdu

Table of Contents

The growing popularity of digital media and accessing the internet as the primary source of information, has changed the world in various ways. It has also shaped different languages and literature differently. For instance, Urdu literature has been impacted by the digital age as well.

literature type meaning in urdu

Since social media websites and information and entertainment are available in abundance online, people nowadays do not spend time reading books, poetry or novels and rather, prefer to entertain themselves via social media and other platforms like Netflix and YouTube. Since the citizens of Pakistan aren’t widely known for their reading habits and young adults or young children do not usually show an interest in Urdu literature, the publishing trends have gone down as writers believe that this market will not provide them with much profit. This has thus negatively impacted Urdu literature.

Moreover, as compared to other renowned languages like English or French, Urdu literature has been a little less accessible online as people do not widely search for Urdu literature on the internet. Moreover, those people who are fluent in Urdu literature or are working in that field as writers or poets may face problems when it comes to the digitalization of the language. That is because the writers and poets themselves may find it difficult to first focus on their literature and then focus on digitizing it as well. Furthermore, the common man of Pakistan is not tech-savvy to the level that he can digitize literature on his own. This is perhaps due to Pakistan not having enough resources available to teach the public about the digital age and train people accordingly. Moreover, since the economy of Pakistan is already struggling, preserving and promoting the language of Pakistan is not the primary concern of the government. Thus, digitizing Urdu literature is commonly deemed unimportant and is thus disregarded.

Moreover, when it comes to digitizing any literary works, the publisher must have relevant information regarding copyrights so the publisher can protect the work of people and ensure that it is not plagiarized. However, since not many people are aware of the digitization process, they may not even be aware of the copyrights and the problems regarding plagiarism. Thus, people may struggle with getting the necessary documentation and legal work done to make their Urdu literature accessible online and keep it protected as well.

literature type meaning in urdu

However, even though it may be commonly assumed that the digital age has not been much beneficial for Urdu literature, and has caused harm to Urdu literature, that may not be the case. That is because just like English newspapers and English news channels are available online, Urdu newspapers like Jung and Urdu news channels like Dawn and Geo are available online and can be easily accessed by their websites and YouTube channels as well.

Moreover, some websites solely focus on publishing Urdu blogs, establishing Urdu digital libraries, and publishing Urdu e-books as well. Not just that, but Urdu literature has gained popularity on social media platforms as well because Urdu poetry and novels are deemed aesthetic by young adults and thus, are shared over social media in the form of video edits for Instagram posts. This social media discourse regarding Urdu literature has aided in its popularity over social media and has led to people showing an increased interest towards reading Urdu poetry and Urdu novels which contain those specific quotes or dialogues which resonate with social media users. Moreover, some clothing brands promote Urdu literature on social media as well by marketing clothing items and accessories which have Urdu literature and Urdu alphabets printed on them. This has sparked the interest of many social media users to research Urdu literature. Moreover, some social media are solely dedicated to promoting Urdu literature and posting famous Drama clips on social media where the dialogues highlight the competency of the writers and encourage people to read the works of those writers.

As for the publishing trends regarding Urdu literature, some Urdu literary works are re-printed for universities and schools as Urdu is a compulsory subject in Pakistan. Thus, this re-printing allows Urdu works to be published and accessible to the new generation. Fortunately, for students who may struggle with the language, there are many websites available which offer online Urdu tuition to students.

Moreover, the Karachi Literature Festival takes place annually in Karachi and Urdu literature is widely discussed in the festival and some famous writers, narrators, and poets even promote their books and make them available for sale in the festival. Thus, impacting the publishing of Urdu literature. Not just that, but the Arts Council in Karachi encourages people to connect with Urdu literature and language as well as many writers host discussions regarding their book at the Arts Council. Moreover, many theater plays also take place in the Arts Council such as ‘Angan Terha’ which are written by famous and esteemed Urdu writers like Anwar Maqsood. This shows that there are avenues and channels in Pakistan where Urdu literature is promoted.

Thus, even though Urdu literature has faced some challenges due to the advent of the digital era, it has provided Urdu literature with new opportunities as well. With the right amount of support and encouragement, Urdu literature can benefit from the digital era and combat the challenges as well.

  • How can the challenges faced by digitization be overcome?

One way of overcoming these challenges is by providing support to Urdu writers publicly in the form of investment and public support, to give Urdu literature the means it deserves to be digitized properly. For instance, teaching Urdu writers about copyrights and promoting Urdu literature in a way that becomes widely available on online reading websites and digital libraries. Furthermore, promoting Urdu literary works via social media channels as well.

  • What is the future of Urdu literature in the digital age?

In the digital age where Urdu shows and movies are internationally recognized, a bit more support can result in the bright future of Urdu literature as social media and Urdu entertainment have the power that is required to make Urdu literature widely recognizable and appreciable. Thus, the future of Urdu literature is bright in the digital age.

  • What are some of the steps I should take if I want my child to learn Urdu literature effectively?

Firstly, you should try to cultivate a reading habit of Urdu books and poetry in your children. Moreover, you can consult the Urdu teachers at your child’s educational institutions to help your child in learning the language. Fortunately, there are many websites available online if you need additional help, which provide a wide variety of Urdu tutors who could aid your child in learning Urdu literature effectively.

  • How can digital media be used to promote Urdu literature?

In the era of digital media, promoting anything has become easier. Urdu literature can easily be promoted on digital media as well via having YouTube channels dedicated to Urdu literature for instance or conducting interviews with famous Urdu writers. Moreover, social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook can use relevant keywords and increase the reach of Urdu literary content as well.

  • What are some of the most famous Urdu literary works?

The is a wide variety of Urdu literary works and ranges from genres like non-fiction, fiction, poetry, comedy, and even drama. Some of the famous Urdu literary works have been penned by Mirza Ghalib, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Saadat Hasan Manto, and Ismat Chugtai. In the current era, Anwar Maqsood and Farhat Ishtiaq are famous for their literary works as well.
