Animal ingredients in your lipstick or eyeshadow are actually much more common than you might think. Some products are made with animal fats like tallow (for hydration), beeswax (which acts as a structurant to help make formulas occlusive), or even more cringe-worthy ingredients like carmine, a deep red pigment made with insects found in many red lipsticks .

As for testing on animals, many companies have begun phasing out the practice, but unfortunately, it still happens. Here's what you need to know about vegan and cruelty-free products:

  • Vegan makeup describes makeup that hasn't been formulated with any animal products or byproducts.
  • Cruelty-free means that the product itself hasn't been tested on animals, and that any raw materials used in making it weren't tested on animals, either.

While many big-name brands aren't vegan or cruelty-free, that doesn't mean that vegan and cruelty-free makeup is any less efficacious or exciting.

How do you know that a brand is truly vegan?

It can be challenging to find vegan makeup, and even more challenging to find brands that have committed to being completely vegan. Some brands may claim veganism but still sell products that contain animal-derived ingredients like manuka honey. Most vegan brands also don't have any third party certification to back up their claims of veganism and keep them accountable. Finding truly vegan brands takes a bit of research and digging — which is exactly what we've done below.

What about cruelty-free?

Unlike vegan brands, it's much easier to find cruelty-free products, thanks to third party certifications that assure consumers their practices do not involve animal testing. A Leaping Bunny certification demonstrates to consumers that neither the product nor its ingredients are currently being tested on animals . As such, we at Good Housekeeping consider this the gold standard of cruelty-free certifications.

Keep in mind: Many vegan brands are also cruelty-free, but it doesn't always go the other way around.

How we tested

The Good Housekeeping Institute has a century-plus-long history of keeping brands accountable and conducting independent research to debunk marketing claims. In this case, we reached out to popular "vegan" brands to see if each could verify its claims of veganism and support with evidence. We asked each brand its definition of vegan makeup, how it ensures that products meet these standards, and why veganism is important to the brand's ethos. Out of the 14 brands we reached out to, we heard back from eight — and one told us it wasn't fully vegan.

We asked each cruelty-free brand its definition of cruelty-free, as well as evidence of a Leaping Bunny certification as proof. As such, we have only included cruelty-free brands that have Leaping Bunny certifications. We reached out to 11 brands, and six provided us with sufficient evidence.

Below, we rounded up our favorite, trusted vegan and cruelty-free brands — some of which you may not have even known were vegan or cruelty-free. Each brand has been vetted by the GH Institute, so you can be sure that what you're buying lives up to its promises:

e.l.f.

Chances are you've picked up one of e.l.f.'s products from your drugstore before. Not only is e.l.f. loved by beauty editors and bloggers, it's also one of the most affordable brands out there, with tons of picks under $10. The brand’s motto is “guilt-free beauty," and it omits the banned ingredients by the EU regulations and formulate with those that follow the Ulta’s “Clean” designation.

Vapour Beauty

Vapour Beauty

Vapour Beauty creates clean cosmetics that are inspired by Taos, New Mexico — and its simple, dusty color palettes show it. For Vapour Beauty, being cruelty-free isn't just about caring for animals: It's also about respecting and caring for the environment. "Living in harmony with our Earth, plants, animals, and natural resources is who we are," says a brand spokesperson.

Instead, she ensures it used plant-derived or synthetic-but-sustainable ingredients. “There is absolutely no need to have any animal derived ingredients in beauty products” says Abbitt. The brand also tries sourcing its ingredients from organic, fair trade suppliers, and has 100% recyclable packaging. Abbitt adds that Aether has alternative raw materials that can give “fantastic shade ranges and formulations.” See the brand's guide for how to tell if makeup products are really vegan .

ILIA

ILIA is a clean beauty line that blurs the line between makeup and skincare, using good-for-your-skin ingredients in every product. ILIA attempts to be conscious in all of their formulating. While the brand is not entirely vegan, "nearly all of our formulas are vegan, with the exception of a few that use organic beeswax, which is ethically and sustainably sourced without harming bees," says a brand spokesperson. The brand does hold the Leaping Bunny Certification for being cruelty-free.

Cover FX

Cover FX is a high-performance brand dedicated to clean ingredients and makeup that's also good for your skin. Products are formulated without using any animal-derived ingredients or animal testing. The brand only works with select number of trusted labs and manufacturers, carefully vetted and strictly adhering to the brand’s vegan product development standards. Cover FX ensures that lab partners provide all documentation that substantiates the vegan claim for each new product launch. “A big part of our brand ethos is a dedication and responsibility to care for all living things.” says a brand spokesperson. For the brand, beauty means not only taking care of yourself but also the world around you. The brand will soon be part of Ulta’s Conscious Beauty Initiative.

Arches & Halos

Arches & Halos

It’s important to us to develop ethical products while still serving our consumer high quality formulation without testing on animals."Arches & Halos is Leaping Bunny certified and makes sure every new product developed upholds this standard.

Juice Beauty

Juice Beauty

This Gwyneth Paltrow-approved brand is not only committed to using no animal byproducts and not testing on animals, but it also only uses plant-based pigments in makeup formulas. PETA has awarded Juice Beauty a  Courage in Commerce award  for staying out of China’s brick and mortar stores known to test on animals. Juice Beauty has legally agreed to not conduct or be party to any animal testing on products or any ingredients. Additionally, the brand claims to have developed a supply chain monitoring system to assure that no animal testing takes place with any of its ingredient suppliers. At Juice Beauty, the belief is in the ethical treatment of animals, as harming animals is not only cruel but harms the planet, its ecosystem, and ultimately humans.

COVERGIRL

Beauty giant CoverGirl is committed to being cruelty-free. Not only is CoverGirl a  GH Seal star , no CoverGirl products or ingredients have been tested on animals, neither by the brand nor suppliers. "Too often, consumers face a high price tag for beauty products that match their most important values," says a brand spokesperson. In 2018, CoverGirl became the largest makeup brand ever to be awarded Leaping Bunny approval, making cruelty-free products available at an accessible price point and in retail locations nationwide in hopes of setting a new standard for the industry and pave the way to lasting change.

Mented

Mented Cosmetics is committed to having its products without animal products or byproducts. The brand says it works with manufacturers in the U.S. and abroad to ensure all ingredients are vegan and cruelty-free. It strives to deliver on consumers' expectations of high quality ingredients, and being a vegan brands helps them deliver on that. Mented isn't just vegan: It's also a black-owned brand that consistently paves the way for makeup that works on every skin tone.

Smith & Cult

Smith & Cult

Known for highly pigmented and high quality nail polish, Smith & Cult is also cruelty-free. Smith & Cult is all about celebrating life experiences and being the best version of yourself. Because of this, the brand says that testing on animals goes completely against what it stands for. "We believe that any kind of testing on animals brings them unnecessary harm," says a spokesperson.

KVD Vegan Beauty

KVD Vegan Beauty

KVD prides itself as having “100% vegan ingredients” which means products “having no animal byproducts and not tested on animals.” The whole line was reformulated and relaunched in 2018 to fit the mission of the brand, which is known for its high-pigment and long-lasting performance. It avoids carmine, uses plant-based fats and oils such as sunflower oil, and plant-based waxes instead of beeswax. The brand thinks that the future of beauty is not just clean, but vegan, particularly as consumers get increasingly conscious about animal cruelty, greenhouse gas emissions from raising farm animals, and “the contradiction between the love of their pets and products being tested on animals."

Beautycounter

Beautycounter

Beloved by skincare fanatics and makeup gurus alike, Beautycounter offers one more reason to love the brand: Its commitment to cruelty-free beauty. "Simply put, Beautycounter has been cruelty free since we launched, as testing on animals is not necessary and ethically questionable," says a brand representative.  "If we can have safe ingredients and products without testing on animals, why would we?"

Vesca

Beauty newbie Vesca has arrived on the scene determined to increase inclusivity in the beauty world. Often, when brands tout wide shade ranges, it's only referring to foundations and skin products but Vesca aims to change that with highlighters and bronzers for all skin tones. Vesca is also committed to being vegan: "We found we could create beautiful, high-quality formulations without any animal-derived ingredients and byproducts," says a spokesperson.

Is Organic Makeup Vegan?

Is Organic Makeup Vegan

Organic makeup is not always vegan. Organic makeup often contains natural animal-derived ingredients such as organic beeswax, honey, pearl powder, or carmine. Beeswax is by far the most common ingredient that makes organic makeup not vegan.

Instead of beeswax, organic vegan brands use a variety of plant oils and waxes such as candelilla wax, carnauba wax, jojoba oil, cocoa seed butter, and shea butter. For shine and pigments, vegan companies use mineral pigments such as mica crystals and iron oxides.

To make sure the organic makeup you are thinking to buy is vegan, it’s best if you prefer products with a clear vegan tag or certified vegan label from organizations like PETA.

What To Look For In Organic Vegan Makeup?

What To Look For In Organic Vegan Makeup

When looking to buy organic vegan makeup, always start by checking the ingredient list of each product. Brands can label their products ‘organic’ when in reality, the product can include a bunch of synthetic preservatives with just one organic oil or extract.

We suggest preferring vegan makeup that includes certified organic ingredients. No makeup product is usually 100% organic. But a high concentration of certified organic ingredients ensures most of the product’s ingredients are truly natural, pesticide-free, and non-GMO.

A trustworthy label for finding organic vegan makeup is the USDA Organic Certification. It’s the only standardized framework by the US government that ensures the makeup product is:

  • 100% organic– 100% certified organic content
  • organic – at least 95% certified organic content
  • made with organic – at least 70% certified organic content
  • including individual certified organic ingredients specified on the packaging

Other labels you can trust in terms of the safety of organic vegan products EWG verification or EU Cosmetics Regulation , or safety labels from individual countries. That being said, not all small organic vegan makeup brands can afford expensive labels and they deserve our support as well.

How We Review Organic Vegan Makeup

We review organic vegan makeup based on two criteria. First, we list brands that are 100% vegan and mainly use certified organic, organic, or natural ingredients. Secondly, we review makeup brands that are organic with a good vegan selection.

All organic vegan makeup brands we list are either positively received by us through personal experience or peer recommendations. None of our reviews at Vegan Avenue have been incentivized by any brand or retailer.

All makeup should check a handful of basic boxes. Pigment payoff, great texture, lasting power—that’s the bare minimum, the baseline for any beauty product deserving of your money. But there’s other factors to consider too, and if you’re an animal lover, a vegan composition tops the list. The best vegan makeup brands are free of “any animal sourced ingredients or animal by products,” explains cosmetic chemist and BeautyStat CEO Ron Robinson . We’re talking no beeswax, no animal testing, no pigment extracted from beetles (yes, that’s how it’s done).

Formulating intensely pigmented eyeshadow, lipsticks, or liners without using certain animal extracts, like carmine, or nailing down the texture of a mascara sans beeswax can be difficult. But there’s no shortage of natural makeup brands that have succeeded—without compromising the look and feel of their products. Here, we’ve rounded up the best vegan makeup brands that any animal (and beauty) lover can feel good about using.

I cannot say enough positive things about this brand—every product in the lineup is formulated to perfection. The SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen is a beach staple (the glow!!!) and the blushes and bronzers are creamy dreams. In addition to a vegan makeup, all the products, including skincare, are designed with sensitive skin in mind. They’ve been dermatologist-tested and have the National Eczema Association’s stamp of approval.

If you’re a makeup lover, there’s no way Hourglass isn’t on your radar. They turn out holy grail after holy grail, have some of the sleekest packaging in the game, and are loved by celebrity makeup artists. From the cult-favorite Veil Translucent Powder to the Glitter Pigments, which in my humble opinion are wildly underrated, all the products deliver. And since 2020, everything has been free of any animal-derived ingredient or animal byproduct.

Celebrities agree: This brand is the creme de la creme of vegan beauty. Everyone from Leslie Mann to Lisa Rinna have waxed poetic about the brand. The Kohl eyeliners are a standout (we recommend scooping up the new electric blue hue!) and the cheek tint is the ultimate multi-tasker. But wait, it gets better. Dempsey, who is an animal activist, has made the brand an official PETA Business Friend, and supports the organization in their fight to stop animal abuse.

Chances are you’ve seen a TikTok (or two, or five) about the amazingness that is the HydroGrip Primer. And we have good news: the primer—along with the rest of the line—is committed to creating cruelty-free, paraben-free and vegan products. If you’re new to the brand, we suggest scooping up the mascara or the brow tint—they’re some of the best out there.

This makeup brand may have only launched last year, but it’s quickly become a beauty editor favorite thanks to its minimalist M.O. Majority of the products come in stick form, making them ideal for on-the-go application. Basically, the brand is the MVP for a five-minute face. Our favorite product? The Minimalist, which is the creamiest, most hydrating concealer and foundation duo.

We love false lashes as much as the next person. Unfortunately, the most natural looking falsies are sometimes made from mink fur. That’s where Velour Beauty comes in. The 100 percent vegan brand has spent years sourcing fine materials to mimic the appearance of mink lashes—without harming any animals in the process. As an added bonus, the lashes are designed to last for over 25 applications, making them a more sustainable alternative to one-and-done strip lashes.

For a vegan beauty brand that feels luxe as can be, Róen is the way to go. From the packaging to the formulas, the beauty brand has created a high end and non-toxic aesthetic. While they have high-performing staples (their clean mascara is one of the best), we love the brand for their shimmers. The eyeshadows are unmatched and their lip oil balm is one of the most nourishing options out there.

If this brand isn’t on your radar, you’re missing out. It is a staple in makeup artists’ kits, but I could go on and on and on about their high performance products, which are vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free, talc-free, and paraben-free. Their lipsticks and complexion products deserve five stars, but their Glitter Pigments will exceed your wildest expectations—trust me. They go on like a dream, are finger friendly, and never, ever crease.

Rosie Huntington Whitely delivered—big time—with her vegan makeup line. While new launches continue to roll out, the overall vibe of the line is soft, minimalistic glam. You can expect lots of liquid and cream products with buildable finishes. The blushes and newly-launched bronzer are summer staples, but her Skin Enhancing Tinted Serum is by far the most innovative product in the range. It has micro-encapsulated pigments that burst when applied with a brush.

If you’re looking for high performance, long-lasting products that still meet vegan standards, turn to Cover Fx. The PETA-approved line is best known for its Drops Collection. They can be applied exclusively to the high points of the face, but a makeup artist hack is to mix a bit in with foundation for an all-over glow.

Selena Gomez somehow churns out one viral beauty product after the other. The good news? Every single item in the line is vegan. So whether you want to hop on board with her liquid blush or try the TikTok-famous tinted moisturizer, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that no animals were harmed in the making. They’re also cruelty-free and a part of PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies database.

Anyone with a love for lipstick should check out the high-end, luxe formulas from Valdé Beauty, a lipstick-only brand. The cruelty-free, vegan line is known for their elaborate packaging, which mimics the look of armor. The formulas themselves are gorgeous: the shades are pigmented, the texture is flawless, and the ingredients leave lips feeling soft and hydrated.

The Best Vegan Makeup and Skin-Care Brands You Should Know

There’s a lot to love about vegan beauty, starting with the fact that vegan makeup and skin care has come a long way from its outdated stereotypes. Gone are the assumptions that you have to settle for crunchy packaging or an off-putting scent in order to have transparency into how your products are formulated. Instead, vegan makeup today delivers serious pigment and long wear, all without the need to involve animals in the process.

A quick primer for those new to vegan beauty: Unlike more nebulous terms such as clean , green , and organic , vegan has a hard-and-fast definition across industries. In short, it means the product contains no animal by-products or animal-derived ingredients, like carmine, lanolin, and beeswax. It’s also important to note that cruelty-free doesn’t mean vegan. Rather, it denotes that the products weren’t tested on animals in any stage in the process. A product can be cruelty-free without being vegan, and vice versa, so keep that in mind while you’re shopping.

Almost every brand out there offers vegan options at this point, and reputable brands should provide clarification on which of its products are vegan-friendly. But if you want to take the guesswork out of stocking your makeup bag and top shelf, look no further than these 13 beauty brands that aren’t only vegan, they’re also all-around excellent.

1. KVD Vegan Beauty

Instagram content.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Formerly Kat Von D Beauty (the makeup artist left the company earlier this spring), the brand’s name has undergone a makeover but its dedication to high-quality vegan formulas remains firmly the same. The edgy packaging and bold colors are an homage to the founder’s history as a tattoo artist, but the products have been embraced by makeup lovers from all walks of life. The brand has been 100% vegan since 2010, and has continued to find ways to innovate in that space. If you think vegan means hippy-dippy, low-coverage products, you would be shocked by the brand’s high-coverage complexion products. The iconic Tattoo Liner and Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks are a must-try for bold looks that don’t budge.

2. Milk Makeup

Think of Milk Makeup as Glossier’s Gen Z sister who’s TikTok famous and gets all her clothes from Dolls Kill. The brand is all about quick, fresh makeup with edgy pops of color and cheeky product names. Launched by the founder of New York’s Milk studios and veterans of the beauty industry, the brand is extremely cool, and the products are damn good. Milk has been cruelty-free since its launch, but in 2019 the brand announced that all its products are now completely vegan. A good place to start is with the OG Lip + Cheek Sticks or the newly launched Vegan Milk Moisturizer.

3. E.L.F. Cosmetics

It can be hard to find vegan beauty that isn’t expensive, but E.L.F. has a huge range of products at super-affordable prices. The brand runs the gamut in terms of vibes and has a little something for everyone—from classic BB cream to bold glitter shadow. After updating its formulas to replace beeswax and lanolin with synthetic alternatives, the brand is currently 100% vegan across its extensive range of makeup and skin care. E.L.F.’s shadow palettes are high quality and a great way to dip your toes into more colorful looks, and the Jelly Pop Juicy Glosses are an editor favorite.

4. Pacifica

Another affordable option, Pacifica offers a huge range of vegan cosmetics, skin care, nail polish, hair products, and body care. The brand is also earth-conscious—it has its own recycling program —and is also cruelty-free. Pacifica is nature-inspired, from the ingredients to the shade names, and has a feminine, dreamy vibe. The offerings are so expansive, you could really get everything you need there, but we recommend starting with the super shimmery Get Lit Multi-High Light or the Lavender Moon Body lotion.

5. Hourglass Cosmetics

The brand isn’t totally vegan yet , but it offers a huge range of products that are and has pledged to be completely vegan by the end of 2020. Hourglass proves that sleek, sexy products and vegan-friendly formulas are not mutually exclusive. The brand’s stunning packaging couldn’t be further from a health food store, and the high-tech formulas are some of the best on the market, vegan or not. The brand is most known for its complexion products that provide that elusive lit-from-within effect, making it a favorite of supermodels like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The Ambient Lighting Palette is perfect for that dewy glow, and the Confession Lipstick is full coverage without sacrificing comfort.

6. Lime Crime

If you love bright colors, whimsical packaging, and lots and lots of glitter, check out Lime Crime. The unicorn-inspired brand has been cruelty-free since it launched and made the transition to being fully vegan in 2012. Despite its bright, playful aesthetic, even the most reserved makeup lovers can find something that fits their vibe, like the cult classic Matte Velvetine Liquid Lipsticks. That being said, we’re partial to the brand’s flashier offerings, like the Diamond Dew Liquid Eyeshadow and Venus 3 Eyeshadow Palette.

7. Bite Beauty

For all the lipstick collectors out there, this one’s for you. Bite is hyper-focused on lip products (although it now offers a few complexion products) and makes some of the best lipsticks available that happen to be vegan, clean, cruelty-free, and gluten-free. The lipsticks are extremely pigmented yet comfortable to wear, and the lip balms can soothe even the most chapped lips. The Power Move Lip Crayon is a great starting point, as is the Agave Lip Mask. Note that while everything in the range is vegan, not all the lipsticks at the custom Lip Labs are, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on visiting one.

7. Herbivore Botanicals

Chances are you’ve seen Herbivore’s gorgeous packaging while scrolling Instagram, but the brand has more to offer than just being extremely photogenic. It was founded by a couple in their kitchen who were dedicated to creating products with no filler, meaning every ingredient has a purpose. The result? Super-potent skin-care products made with organic, food-grade ingredients. Its range of oils put Herbivore on the map, but we especially love its exfoliators. Try the Blue Tansy Fruit Enzyme Resurfacing Clarity Mask for serious exfoliation with a side of skin-soothing ingredients or the Prism Glow Serum for a more gradual glow.

8. Biossance

All of Biossance’s products are based on squalane, which is a version of the natural lipid squalene found in our skin. Because it’s so close to what our skin produces, it locks in hydration without clogging pores. Most brands use squalene from shark liver or olives, but Biossance created a form made from sugarcane to be as sustainable as possible. The skin-care range is made of easy-to-use essentials that tackle issues like dryness, acne, and dark spots while using clean ingredients. The brand’s Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil is perfect for weightless moisture and glowing skin, and the Squalane + Tea Tree Detox mask decongests pores without stripping.

9. Summer Fridays

Considering it was founded by two influencers, it’s no surprise Summer Fridays became an Instagram darling practically overnight. The brand is known for its insanely chic masks and straightforward products that promise glowing, radiant skin. The brand is vegan, cruelty-free, plastic-free, and has some of the best branding out there. Pretty much everyone is in agreement that the Jet Lag Mask is the star of Summer Fridays: It gives you bouncy, dewy skin in minutes. But you also can't go wrong with the CC Me Vitamin C serum, which is gentle enough for even supersensitive skin without sacrificing any brightening power.

10. Cover FX

Created by the former chief chemist at MAC Cosmetics, Cover FX has been committed to effective, clean, vegan products since its launch. The brand is based on the idea that makeup isn’t one-size-fits-all, and the products are made to mix and match based on what works for you. This is most apparent in the primers, which are specially formulated for every skin type, and in the custom highlighter drops you can mix into any product you desire.

11. Youth to the People

Even the most skeptical shoppers can find something to love about Youth to the People. The brand is 100% vegan and cruelty-free, follows the EU’s strict standards for what’s considered “safe” (they’re much more stringent than the FDA’s rules in the U.S. ), and has a commitment to sustainability, including using glass for all its packaging. On top of all that, the products deliver. The Superfood Cleanser has a devout following for its gentle cleansing power that packs skin with antioxidants. The Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream mask is a newer launch but is equally beloved for its calming and hydrating power.

12. Tower 28 Beauty

Tower 28 is a relative newcomer in the clean-beauty space (the brand launched in 2019), but that hasn’t stopped it from quickly becoming a favorite for its low-maintenance vegan formulas. Everything is made with sensitive skin in mind, due to the fact that the founder has had eczema her entire adult life. So Tower 28 follows the EU’s regulations, the National Eczema Association’s ingredient guidelines (it’s the only mass makeup brand on the market to do so), and all products are hypo-allergenic, noncomedogenic, and dermatologist tested. Don’t get it twisted, though. There’s nothing clinical-looking about the brand—it’s made up of bright, dewy essentials in cheerful packaging. Tower 28’s hero product is arguably the perfectly nonsticky Shine On Lip Jelly, and the newest launch Bronzino is a bronzer for people who hate bronzer.

13. Farsali

Farsali is beloved by beauty vloggers for its innovative skin-care-meets-makeup formulas. The products are clean, vegan, and cruelty-free, and flawlessly incorporate Instagram trends like unicorn beauty and glass skin into multiuse formulas. While the line features a lip mask, eye cream, and gel cream, its bread and butter are the serums that combine skin care and makeup primers. The Rose Gold Elixir was an early hit on Instagram thanks to the antioxidant-heavy formula and the instant glow it provides (the real gold flakes are also a draw). If you have oily skin, give the Liquid Powder Oil Balancing Serum a try to matte-ify without cakey-ness.

Are you utterly transfixed with searching for the best vegan makeup brands that solely use clean, certified organic, fair-trade, and ethically sourced ingredients? You are in luck. Because we are on a mission to help you find your next favorite 100% vegan makeup. Go ahead and take a look at our trusted cruelty-free makeup finds below.

Don’t forget to check our our list of 15 Best Sustainable Makeup Brands For A Non Toxic & Clean Beauty Routine

This post is about the best vegan makeup brands

sustainable vegan makeup

Let’s not sugarcoat it. Many brands out there slap the oh-so-familiar “plant-based” or “animal-friendly” labels to make us quiver with excitement about their new launches. However, vegan makeup goes far deeper than that. Ethical cosmetic brands that are vegan don’t use any animal by-products or animal-derived ingredients. Instead, they enrich their formulas with botanical extracts and natural minerals to serve us with that coveted glow. On top of that, they closely monitor their supply chain, use recyclable or refillable packaging and try their best to minimize their carbon footprint in the process.

Many people also confuse the terms vegan and cruelty-free beauty. To put it simply, cruelty-free makeup brands can still use animal-derived ingredients that weren’t tested on animals. So you need to make sure that your clean beauty products come from a reputable,  100% vegan and cruelty-free makeup brand with a holistic approach to sustainability.

To make your quest to find the best of the best beauty products that are safe and clean while also supporting plant-based makeup brands on a mission to make an impact a breeze, we made a list of 100% vegan makeup brand options for you, ahead.

What does “cruelty free” makeup mean?

Granted, the FDA hasn’t introduced a standard definition of what “cruelty-free makeup “ actually means which leaves much room for brands to make all sorts of claims. Nonetheless, for ethical cosmetic brands and consumers alike, “cruelty-free” refers to products that have not been tested on animals at any stage of their development. Thus, makeup products can be cruelty-free without being vegan while vegan products can sometimes not be cruelty-free.

The best way to ensure that cruelty-free makeup brands are legitimate is to look for certain certifications. The two most prominent symbols you should look for on a website are the Certified Leaping Bunny Cruelty-Free and the PETA cruelty-free certification badges. Australian and international brands can also have the Choose Cruelty-Free [CCF] badge.

What makes a makeup product “Vegan”?

The best vegan makeup brands use absolutely no animal by-products or animal-derived ingredients in their clean beauty formulas. That includes honey, beeswax, lanolin, collagen, and many more. Additionally, an 100% vegan makeup brand must not use animal testing as well. So, to put it simply, plant-based makeup brands that use certified organic and natural ingredients like oils and nut extracts or minerals and do not test on animals are, in fact, completely vegan. We’ve listed some amazing 100% vegan and cruelty-free makeup brands below for you.

What ingredients are toxic in makeup?

Opting for beauty products that are vegan is not only kinder to the animals, but also to your skin. There are many toxic ingredients in makeup that can cause everything from mind skin irritations to full-blown allergic reactions – yikes! Some of the most dangerous names you should be looking out for are Diethanolamine, Formaldehyde, Parabens, Polyethylene glycols, Triclosan, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, and Phthalates. Don’t fret, none of these hard-to-pronounce names are included in the clean beauty formulas of the best vegan makeup brands.

Whether you want to find a non-toxic, organic, vegan alternative to an animal-tested makeup brand you love, or simply looking to upgrade your organic certified beauty arsenal with brand new clean products, we’ve got all your vegan beauty needs covered.

26 of the Best Vegan Beauty Products for Your Eyes, Lips, and Face

make up bio vegan

By Sara Coughlin

Best Vegan Makeup Skin Care and Beauty Products in 2022 Cover FX Milk Makeup E.L.F. Cosmetics

There are many vegan alternatives to meat, dairy, and condiments, so it only makes sense that our options for vegan makeup, skin care , and other beauty products are just as plentiful—and, frankly, as enticing. From 100% vegan brands like Pacifica to companies like Winky Lux and Caudalie that have select items with all-vegan ingredients, you can find a wide array of high-quality vegan beauty products available now, whatever your style or skin type may be. If you're new to shopping for vegan cosmetics, here's a quick briefing on what sets them apart from other beauty products.

What is vegan makeup?

As SELF previously reported, vegan makeup products do not contain any animal products. As far as formal certifications go, the Vegan Society issues trademarks to companies that apply and have products that meet the organization's vegan standards, but there are plenty of technically vegan products that don't have this trademark. So, even if an item doesn't feature any seals on its label verifying its veganism, check the ingredients list anyway—there's a chance that it is, indeed, free of animal-based products and  by-products all the same.

Animal-derived ingredients to look out for include beeswax, honey, lanolin (a moisturizing agent made from sheep's wool), and carmine (a pigment that comes from beetles). Sometimes, products will use plant-based alternatives for these ingredients. If you're still not sure if something is totally vegan after looking at its ingredients, you can always reach out to the brand for confirmation.

What's the difference between vegan and cruelty-free makeup?

Although you may hear these terms mentioned in the same breath, they aren't interchangeable. Again, as SELF has previously written, cruelty-free cosmetics can still contain animal products. Beauty brands are considered cruelty-free if they do not test their products on animals. Those with a Leaping Bunny certification bear the standard for animal friendliness—the program requires zero animal testing on all levels of production, so look for Bunny if you want to be sure that you're buying cruelty-free beauty products.

Whether you're just learning about vegan beauty or want to add to your collection, you've come to the right place—here, we've highlighted a selection of best-selling, top-rated, glowingly reviewed vegan makeup and skin care products on the market now.  We've broken it down into vegan makeup and skin care products for eyes, lips, and face.

All products featured on SELF are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Vegan makeup: 11 stunning & chic plant-based products to try.

Jamie Schneider

If you follow a vegan lifestyle, one area worth paying attention to is your makeup bag. The thing is, you may imagine clean and vegan beauty go hand-in-hand, but that's not always the case; while they both can emphasize plant-derived actives, just because a product is marketed as clean or natural doesn't mean it is also vegan. And just because something's vegan, doesn't mean it's also natural—many vegan brands rely on synthetic ingredients (not always a bad thing either, we should note) for their formulas.

The point is that if you want to shop clean and vegan, you might have to take an extra close look at that ingredient label.

What does "vegan" mean for makeup?

Let's be clear: Vegan makeup refers to products without any animal-derived ingredients. (It's different from cruelty-free, which you can learn more about here ). That said, there are a few common players you might not realize are animal-derived: Honey, collagen , and beeswax are perhaps the most recognizable, as they're found in many clean beauty items (ever come across a collagen-infused lip balm with a beeswax base?). Clean and natural, sure, but vegan, they are not. There's also carmine—a dye commonly used in bold, red lipsticks that's actually derived from beetles.

Not to fret: The vegan makeup market is loaded with playful options and luxe formulas, and it's not so difficult to find brands that share your plant-based values. Here, we've rounded up the very best.

Beautycounter Color Intense Lipstick

Beloved by beauty editors and insiders alike, Beautycounter's lipsticks are a true fan favorite. Thanks to jojoba esters and castor seed oil , the velvety formula practically glides across your lips. And that color payoff? Nothing short of brilliant: a vibrant, classic red that leaves a satin finish. Evidence that vegan makeup certainly doesn't skimp on bold color.

Mented Cosmetics Blush

A vegan and cruelty-free option, this blendable blush is a must-have. The peachy shade is perfect for just a hint of color—a staple for that slightly flushed, "no-makeup look." With vitamin E for some welcomed nourishment, this blush is your go-to for a subtle glow. You'll have people wondering whether you just left a yoga class or went for a brisk jog. You know, sans sweat.

Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek

Despite the ode to lactose, Milk's entire brand is 100% vegan—meaning you can't really go wrong with any of these gorgeous formulas. Perhaps our favorite is the lip-to-cheek multiple, formulated with mango butter, avocado oil, and apricot oil to hydrate your skin plump as you blend in the pigment. Tap on your cheekbones and lips to amp up your features and provide natural-looking color.

Lip + Cheek , Milk Makeup ($28)

Journ Beauty Alpenglow

A favorite from celebrity makeup artist Camara Aunique , this concealer is the perfect antidote to bleary-eyed mornings. Why? It's purple upon application, meaning it instantly brightens dark spots for any skin tone. (It also contains vitamin C , just in case you needed some extra brightening properties.) Just apply wherever you need to lift and even, blending in for a seamless finish. Dull and sallow skin no more.

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Ultra-Natural Mascara

Looking for a mascara that leaves your lashes feathery soft? This Juice Beauty mascara has them covered, with a formula that volumizes beyond belief. Thanks to vitamin E and organic aloe vera juice, your flutters are conditioned, never crunchy or clumpy. Plus, it's Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free.

Touch In SOL Pretty Filter Mattish Liquid Eyeshadow

Another bold number that proves vegan makeup is far from boring. For showstopping neon lids, swipe a couple of layers of this fun liquid shadow (the more layers, the more matte it will appear; apply a single swipe for a more sheer look). If you're looking to upgrade your winged liner game, feel free to also brush it on as a thick eyeliner. Ball's in your court, here.

LAWLESS Summer Skin Velvet Matte Bronzer

This finely milled powder bronzer glides effortlessly on the skin for a rich, smooth finish. Whether you're going for a full contour or an allover bronze, this formula is versatile and blendable (the texture feels nothing short of velvet). Pro tip: Use a large, fluffy brush on the collarbones and décolletage for a natural, sun-kissed look.

ILIA Beauty Essential Brow Natural Volumizing Brow Gel

Brow gels are admittedly more difficult to make vegan: Many are formulated with beeswax to coat the hairs and keep them fluffed. ILIA's, however, uses shea butter for optimal control, along with sunflower seed oil and aloe vera juice to condition the brow hairs and keep them touchably flexible. The result? Full, lush arches in just a few swipes.

NakedPoppy Clean Liquid Eyeliner

For those partial to a strong, winged liner, this liquid number is your best bet. The precise tip lends flawless application, and it's formulated with cornflower water to soothe the delicate eye area (you know, in case you need to remove and reapply a couple of times before getting the wing just right ).

It's all about the dew: packed with vitamin C and E to nourish and protect the skin, as well as squalane for a boost of hydration. Feel free to apply this star product under your makeup base, or on its own for a bout of brightness. It even doubles as a highlighter—it's that glow-inducing.

Kat Von D recently made an announcement that proved pretty major for fans of her eponymous makeup brand : Each and every product in the line, which has been a cult favorite since its 2008 launch, would be reformulated to attain 100-percent vegan status. Many of the offerings already fell under this category, but not all of them, so Kat upped the ante by declaring that her products would become vegan -friendly, not just cruelty-free, across the board.

The tattoo-artist-turned-makeup-mogul may be a hardcore vegan herself (her Instagram bio reads simply “Vegan as fuck”), but you don’t have to swear off everything an animal has ever touched to understand the benefits of switching to vegan makeup —the biggest benefit being that absolutely nobody needs to use ingredients derived from dead animals and tested on live ones in their beauty routine. (And if you do follow a vegan diet, it makes perfect sense to opt for vegan beauty products, too.)

MORE: 10 Beauty Favorites You Didn’t Know Were Cruelty-Free

It’s not half as crunchy as it sounds, promise : By definition, a product that’s vegan just means it’s made without animal testing or byproducts, including common animal-derived components like beeswax, lanolin, and carmine (the latter of which makes your blush and lipstick red by way of crushed beetles). It does not need to be handcrafted with a mortar and pestle by a barefoot earth mother breastfeeding in the forest to be categorized as vegan; in fact, there are countless brands already serving up totally animal-free makeup, and you may not even realize that they’re lurking in your local Sephora or your Instagram feed.

Here, 10 of the best 100-percent vegan makeup brands on the market to shop regardless of whether or not you’d choose a block of tofu over a burger.

Do good for the planet and animals while looking good with these cruelty-free , vegan, non-toxic, and environmentally sustainable makeup, skincare, and hair care brands sold at Sephora.

I was pleasantly surprised to see so many amazing cruelty-free & vegan-friendly beauty brands available at Sephora are also committed to social, environmental, and sustainable practices.

Whether it’s developing non-toxic and clean formulas that are more gentle on our skin and our waterways or choosing to use responsibly and sustainably sourced ingredients with respect to the welfare of the workers, protecting the planet and its resources, as well as, supporting local communities.

But it doesn’t stop there. In addition to using sustainably sourced and natural ingredients, these eco-friendly makeup and beauty brands are also dedicated to reducing our reliance and overconsumption of single-use plastic that often end up in the landfill or our oceans.

To be part of the solution, these ethical cosmetics companies are committed to using minimal packaging either made of recycled materials and/or recyclable components including FSC-certified paper derived from responsibly managed forests.

Of course, it goes without saying that no beauty brand is perfect so although their efforts to creating sustainable makeup and cosmetics products are being recognized and appreciated, there’s always going to be ways to improve and do better. But it’s a step in the right direction and I think it’s important to highlight these conscious beauty brands doing good things.

Why Sephora? In order to demonstrate that making conscious and ethical choices in our beauty routine isn’t a hassle or difficult, I wanted to show how easy it is to find sustainable products at the places you already shop at.

22 Best Clean Makeup Brands That Deserve to Be on Your Radar

By Angela Trakoshis and Sarah Han

22 Best Clean Makeup Brands 2023 According to Allure Editors

As many of us become more conscious of what we're putting in our bodies, we're also turning to clean makeup brands as we're becoming more aware of what we're putting on our bodies. While the performance of these cosmetics used to pale in comparison to products from our favorite makeup counters, there are many 100% plant-based makeup brands creating products that are richly pigmented, apply beautifully, and wear as well as their more synthetic competitors. You may already be using some of them without even realizing they're labeled as clean or natural beauty.

But before we get into our favorites, let's get a couple of things straight: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has nebulous criteria on just what constitutes a natural product ("natural" isn't regulated for cosmetics, so it can be used purely as a marketing term). That means that a product that's classified as "natural" in brand marketing doesn't automatically mean a product is better or safer for you.

Cosmetic chemist Ginger King tells Allure that though there isn't much regulation on the term "natural" in the beauty industry, a more accurate term might be "natural-based," as long as the bulk of the ingredients are naturally derived. "The true naturals have seals like COSMOS Natural or Ecocert — European organizations that allow up to five percent synthetics," King explains.

The FDA does not have a definition for the term " organic " either (let alone organic beauty or organic makeup ), as it is not defined by either the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act or the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act , which it uses as guidelines. "'Organic' usually means USDA-certified food grade. There are limited numbers of products you can make to be classified as organic green," King says.

"'Clean beauty' is a much better term for the consumer as the products are non-toxic and still effective," says King. "'Non-toxic' means free from undesirable ingredients listed by the Environmental Working Group ." She adds that this is better than claiming 'natural' or 'organic' as they are products that perform without compromising safety.

This brings us to another point: An ingredient might be naturally-derived or organic, but that doesn't mean that there's no chance you'll have an adverse or allergic reaction to it, so it's important to be aware of what you're using and how your body responds. "People want natural because they assume natural ingredients are safe, which is not necessarily the case," King explains. “They also may not be as effective as synthetic materials.”

Thanks to growing consumer concern and education, we're seeing an uptick in the use of the phrase "clean beauty." Currently, retailers like Sephora , Ulta Beauty , and Target have established seals of approval for clean beauty products and brands " by implementing their own formulation guidelines. Credo Beauty is known for having particularly rigorous standards, so many brands choose to follow its standards when formulating their products. The Credo Clean Standard includes a so-called Credo Beauty Dirty List that includes over 2,700 ingredients that the retailer prohibits due to safety or sustainability .

In 2019, we also created the Allure Clean Standard for navigating the clean beauty space. Any product or brand that's deemed "clean" by our editors is free of 15 ingredient classes: parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, cyclic silicones, polyethylene or polypropylene (microbeads), aluminum salts, formaldehyde, hydroquinone, PEGs, triclosan, talc, mineral oil, petrolatum, formaldehyde, and toluene.

Ingredients aside, another key benefit is that many products, if not all, contain ingredients that are ethically sourced and cruelty-free. As consumers, it's never been more important to prioritize what we want in our makeup — and our money talks.

To help you sort out your options, these are the best clean makeup brands that have received high marks from Allure editors, so you can start cleaning up your beauty routine.

All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Merit Flush Balm gold vial of dark peachy pink cream blush on light gray background

Merit, a thoughtfully curated brand of dew-enhancing products, follows the European Union's cosmetics regulation standards and avoids over 1,300 ingredients in its products. However, it does treat your face with beloved skin-care ingredients like hydrating squalane and moisturizing vitamin B5 in its products. This minimalist beauty brand is great to shop when you're looking for glow-inducers like the Best of Beauty-winning Flush Balm (pictured here), tinted lip oils, and highlighting balms.

Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara white tube of mascara on light gray background

Ilia Beauty

Ilia Beauty is focused on creating clean, pure products with organic bio-active botanicals that nourish skin as they wear. The Limitless Lash Mascara and Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 (the latter has a lineup of nourishing ingredients such as antioxidant-rich niacinamide and plumping hyaluronic acid) are just two of the brand's Best of Beauty Award winners so far.

New York City-based makeup artist Benjamin Puckey is a huge fan of the brand, spotlighting many of its products. "I love how smooth the Soft Focus Powder feels and how it really disappears on the skin," he says.

Jones Road bottle of rose gold shimmery face oil with beige cap on light gray background

If this is the first time you're hearing about Jones Road , listen up because it's not one to pass up. Founded by legendary makeup artist Bobbi Brown (you know the namesake brand that she stepped down from in 2016), Jones Road is all about bringing minimalism and quality to the clean beauty community.

We even awarded the Jones Road Miracle Balm a 2022 Best of Beauty Award . We adore this product because you can use your fingers to dab this sheen-y cream (available in nine shades) pretty much anywhere you want to look dewy.

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm tan tube with white cap and red Allure Best of Beauty seal in the top right corner on...

Summer Fridays

Lip balms: We can't live without them. In 2023, Summer Fridays stole our hearts with its Lip Butter Balms . These silky, tinted balms (pictured here in Vanilla, a sheer nude) blanket dry lips in a nourishing coat of shea and murumuru seed butters to soothe and condition, as well as vegan waxes that soften lips and boost shine. For a pop of color, give Poppy (coral), Pink Sugar (pink), or Cherry (red) a whirl — and thank us later.

P.S. Our editors are also huge fans of the Sheer Skin Tint , a lightweight base that works well for all skin types (especially sensitive skin), thanks to tiger grass, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and a blend of emollients (squalane, vitamin E, safflower, and avocado oil).

Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Foundation teardrop shaped bottle of foundation with silver cap on light gray background

Haus Labs by Lady Gaga

Haus Labs came back in a big way in 2022 when founder Lady Gaga re-debuted her line at Sephora with 90 items across seven categories. "I wanted this makeup to be unlike any other makeup that's out there and makeup for everyone," she told Allure. "So this is supercharged makeup with supercharged ingredients — it's infused with skin care."

One of these supercharged ingredients her team developed is fermented arnica oil, which ideally allows for better absorption into the skin versus ordinary arnica oil. You'll find it in everything from bronzers, highlighters, and even the TikTok-viral Triclone Skin Tech Foundation , which our editors loved for its buildable, adaptable, and dewy-not-greasy formula. (No wonder it won a 2023 Best of Beauty Award.)

16 Best Drunk Elephant Products to Transform Your Skin-Care Routine

Tower 28's ultra-gentle cosmetics and skin-care products were inspired by brand founder Amy Liu's journey navigating the makeup market with eczema-prone, sensitive skin. Since its 2019 launch, the brand has been following the National Eczema Association's Ingredient Guidelines for formulating every product that hits its virtual shelves. Two of Tower 28's best-sellers — the Save. Our. Skin (S.O.S.) Daily Rescue Facial Spray and SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen SPF 30 (an editor-beloved multitasker ) — have received an NEA Seal of Acceptance .

Need another recommendation from its lineup? We suggest the Allure Best of Beauty Award-winning BeachPlease Luminous Tinted Balm , a multiuse lip-and-cheek tint that glides evenly on your skin for a subtle, radiant finish, or the Bronzino Cream Bronzer (pictured here) for instant warmth and dimension.

Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara Lash Primer white and peach tube of mascara on light gray background

Honest Beauty

Here's the honest truth — we love Honest Beauty because it's a line of high-quality makeup and skin-care products that contain good-for-you (and the environment) ingredients. Founder Jessica Alba created The Honest Company back in 2015 but rebranded it in 2018 with minimal packaging and a simplified product lineup.

If you don't want your concealer to crease , consider trying the Honest Beauty Fresh Flex Concealer , a medium-coverage formula that's built to move with you. It won a 2022 Best of Beauty Award because it's one of few that doesn't get cakey along our under eyes.

P.S. Honest Beauty also makes skin care (the Daily Green Juice Serum won a 2023 Best of Beauty Award) and hair care (specifically, shampoo + body wash and conditioner), so this wallet-friendly brand really covers all of your essentials.

Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick light pink twist up foundation stick on light gray background

Westman Atelier

Makeup artist Gucci Westman created Westman Atelier with the idea of making a luxurious yet clean collection. Some of the skin-nourishing ingredients featured in the products are jojoba oil and coconut oil to ensure skin stays moisturized with any makeup application.

Winning a 2022 Best of Beauty Award in our base category is the Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick . We love it because it's loaded with skin-nourishing ingredients like squalane for moisture and phytosphingosine (a lipid that's found naturally in the skin) for soothing and calming the skin.

Kosas Brow Pop Nano fuchsia brown pencil on light gray background with red Allure Best of Beauty seal in the top right...

Each Kosas product is made with active botanicals and balanced with safe synthetics, giving you luxury formulas, and beautiful pigments that flatter a multitude of skin tones (Hello, Revealer Concealer ), and they all look as good as they feel. One of our top picks at the moment is the Brow Pop Nano (shown here), which picked up a 2023 Best of Beauty Award because its ultra-fine, 1-millimeter tip draws in some of the most precise, natural hairs we've ever achieved.

The Weightless Lip Colors are also not to be missed. Puckey tells Allure , "Kosas has a line of all-natural lipsticks in super chic black packaging. Rosewater (a dusky rose) and Thrillest (bright poppy red) are my favorites." For lip gloss devotees, the Wet Lip Gloss is it for juicy lips without stickiness.

Saie Glow Sculp round black compact of shimmery peach blush on light gray background

Saie, pronounced "say," is one of the newer makeup brands that everyone seems to be talking about. Founded in 2019 by Laney Crowell, this fan-favorite brand (that avoids 59 ingredients like synthetic fragrances) wants to be your go-to for essential basics — think goof-proof brow gels, lightweight tinted moisturizers, and a cushiony marshmallow-textured highlighter. Our current fave? The Glow Sculpt, a hybrid blush-highlighter that leaves skin looking fresh, dewy, and glazed for hours on end — no wonder we gave it a 2023 Best of Beauty Award .

LYS Beauty Speak Love Lip Liner Pencil peach lip pencil on light gray background with red Allure Best of Beauty seal in...

LYS Beauty — which stands for "love yourself," by the way — has a lineup of clean makeup products that are as pigmented and high-performing as they are non-toxic. (The Triple Fix Serum Foundation and Speak Love Lip Liner Pencil , pictured here, did win Allure Best of Beauty Awards, after all).

Founded by Tisha Thompson in 2019, this independent and clean beauty brand was the first Black-owned company to launch under Sephora's Clean Color Cosmetics program. The line contains complexion products with wide shade ranges and each formula is made with plant-based ingredients that are free of gluten, talc, SLS, fragrance, and mineral oil.

Rose Inc. Satin Shimmer Duet Eyeshadow taupe compact with a neutral eye shadow duo inside it on a light gray background

Yes, another celebrity beauty brand found its way onto this list, but Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's makeup and skin-care line, Rose Inc, deserves every bit of praise. Each product in the collection leaves out over 2,000 ingredients , and the brand also offers a virtual ingredient gallery that breaks each one down. Our readers voted the Skin Enhance Luminous Tinted Serum as a Breakthrough winner in the 2023 Readers' Choice Awards but we're also big fans of the Blush Divine Radiant Lip & Cheek Colors and Satin & Shimmer Duet Eyeshadows , which have impressively opaque yet creamy and blendable formulas.

Milk Sculpt Cream Contour Stick dark gray twist up contour stick on white background with red Allure Best of Beauty seal...

Milk Makeup

Since its inception in 2014, Milk Makeup has become a major power player in the vegan and cruelty-free beauty category. With innovative products that are as pretty and fun to use as they are effective, it's easy to see why so many people adore the brand. Speaking of which, makeup artist Quinn Murphy , who works with stars like Kristen Bell, Julianne Moore, and Karlie Kloss — among myriad others — tells Allure it's one of his top-favorite beauty brands. There are a ton of standout products but we recommend the Sculpt Cream Contour Stick to lend your complexion all the dimension you desire, as well as the hardworking duo that is Hydro Grip Primer and Pore Eclipse Matte Setting Spray to lock everything in.

Victoria Beckham Beauty BabyBlade white doubleended eye brown pencil with caps to the side on light gray background

Victoria Beckham Beauty

Victoria Beckham has always been a style icon, and now her namesake cosmetics line has made her a legend in beauty as well. Victoria Beckham Beauty is as luxe as luxury beauty gets, except, unlike a few department store name stays, it follows a rigorous formulation guideline called The V-Standard . Under this initiative, the Posh Spice-founded brand vows to leave out ingredients including mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, and more than 1,300 other additives that the European Union has banned.

These formulas aren't just clean — they look and feel pretty darn good, too. For an instant smokey eye, grab one of the brand's easy-to-glide Satin Kajal Liners , which blend effortlessly without completely rubbing away. Don't forget to top off your eye look with the smudge-proof, ink-black Future Lash Mascara .

Axiology LiptoLid Balmie red lip crayon wrapped in white paper packaging on light gray background

When Ericka Rodriguez founded Axiology, her main goal was to create what she calls "evil-free" and "super ethical" lipstick that wasn't just vegan but also harmless to both humans and the planet we live on. The result is way more than just lipstick. Instead, it's a whole slew of makeup products that are always made with 10 ingredients or fewer: mineral pigments paired with botanical extracts like elderberry, plum seed, and moringa.

In that exclusive ingredient club is also a handful of organic oils like the ones found in the brand's multitasking Balmies (castor and sunflower). And if that weren't appealing enough to your inner environmentalist, the packaging is plastic-free, too.

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush silver geometric compact of pink cream blush on light gray background

Those little chrome swivel compacts you've been seeing all over Instagram are from the luxe beauty brand whose name may give you pause to pronounce (it's kigh-er why-ss ). Naturally-derived and organic ingredients meet luxury beauty with quality cream and powder formulas housed in the brand's signature, luxurious, chrome packaging. Bonus: Kjaer Weis's compacts are refillable. The whole collection aims for beautiful, glowy makeup that lets your skin shine through. Our personal favorites are the cream blushes , which are so dense and richly pigmented you just need a tap or two to blend out with your fingers.

Puckey is partial to Kjaer Weis's lip products. "The lip gloss comes in a gorgeous selection of sheer shades, of which the nudes Cherish and Affinity are my favorites. I also really like the Kjaer Weis lip liners ."

Lawless Perfecting Powder light pink square compact of pressed powder with red Allure Best of Beauty Clean seal in the...

The Lawless tagline is "Clean AF," and the brand means it. Its liquid lipsticks are formulated without carcinogenic, toxic, hormone- or endocrine-disrupting ingredients. If people ingest up to five pounds of cosmetic chemicals every year, Lawless is trying to make sure that its products — that you put directly on your mouth and skin — are as safe as possible. If you're new to the brand, you can't go wrong with the Forget The Filler Lip Plumping Line Smoothing Gloss and complementary Forget The Filler Overnight Lip-Plumping Mask . Also for your consideration is the brand's Perfecting Powder (shown here), which won a 2023 Best of Beauty Award for Best Pressed Powder.

W3ll People Expressionist Mascara white tube of mascara with cap and wand to the side on light gray background

W3ll People

Driven by the knowledge that your skin is an organ that absorbs a high percentage of what you put on it, Well People (previously spelled "W3LL People") strives to create products that look and perform as beautifully as they feel. The expansive collection of complexion and color products has something for everyone, no matter what foundation formula you prefer. Many of the color products are cream-based to melt onto skin for a natural look that leaves you looking healthy, flushed, and beaming. Plus, the Expressionist Mascara is an Allure Best of Beauty winner if you're in the market for a clean mascara.

Beautycounter Skin Twin Creamy Concealer vial of concealer with white cap and wand to the side in front of a product...

Beautycounter

With a tagline like #BetterBeauty, Beautycounter strives to use only the safest ingredients possible and none of the nasties. It even has what it calls " The Never List ," which includes harsh chemicals, dangerous preservatives like formaldehyde, and synthetic flavors and fragrances. The brand offers makeup, skin care, and bath and body products, as well as an array of kits for men, babies, and traveling.

Los Angeles-based makeup artist Joanna Schlip is especially partial to its eye makeup products, including the Think Big All-in-One Mascara , a jet-black formula that volumizes while it conditions lashes with its unique blend of peptides . As for us, we'll have to shout out the Skin Twin Creamy Concealer , which visibly blurs skin thanks to ingredients like knotgrass extract and superfruit avocado-coated pigments.

Alima Pure Pressed Foundation jar of powder foundation with black cap ajar and diagonal swatch next to it on light gray...

Portland, Oregon-based Alima Pure hit the ground running back in 2004, and it has only become an even more ingredient- and environment-conscious brand in the years since. Its ingredient transparency is incredibly refreshing — the brand keeps a glossary on its site of what it uses and why, even clearly noting the mere four synthetic ingredients it has welcomed into its otherwise plant-based formulas. (For example, benzyl alcohol is used as a paraben alternative to preserve ingredients.) Alima Pure's Pressed Foundation is a favorite among the brand's fans, garnering rave reviews for both its formula — evening primrose and argan oils are the star ingredients — and its waste-reducing refillable compact.

Han Skincare Cosmetics Multistick rose twist up blush stick with cap to the side on light gray background

Han Skincare Cosmetics

Han Skincare Cosmetics, like so many clean beauty brands, is quick to list what its products are free of — synthetic fragrance, parabens, and animal cruelty, to name a few. But what it's full of is just as important. The brand focuses on using plant and vegetable pigments to get the gorgeous colors in products like its Multisticks , as well as ingredients so beneficial, that they're often found in high-performance skin-care products, like green tea, argan oil , and shea butter .

100 Pure Beauty Ultra Lengthening Mascara silver tube of mascara with cap and wand to the side on light gray background

100% Pure Beauty

100% Pure Beauty has a full collection of skin care, makeup, hair, and body products, all made with naturally-derived ingredients. The brand is serious about the way it sources its ingredients, too, using a strict methodology to determine and confirm that its products contain no synthetic ingredients. The Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream is worth trying to brighten under eyes with its star ingredient . But, as for makeup, the brand's foundations are available in a wide range of shades. If you're on the hunt for a new lipstick, the Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Butter Matte Lipstick in the matte orange-red shade Sonora Red packs a punch.

Make up Bio Vegan: What is it? And where to buy the products?

Also in the field of Vegan and Cruelty free  cosmetics there are several selections of products and various corporate policies. In recent periods in addition to Vegan, many fans also are turning to Eco-Bio. The Eco-Bio cosmetics products are made only with ingredients derived from organic farming, also trying to respect as much as possible the environment during the production of cosmetics.

Eco-Bio, Vegan and Cruelty free are definitely synonymous with products that still have a strong interest in animals and the environment. But to get a cosmetic, really pure, natural and with no chemicals, you must choose products for Make Up Bio Vegan.

Make up Bio Vegan the best choice for your skin and the environment

When it comes to Vegan cosmetics are not always certain to have something to do with ecological and organic product. In fact, many products made without ingredients tested on animals or products of animal origin, have to make up for this lack of chemical ingredients.

The chemical components and non-natural use, often contain traces of lead or mercurio that can terribly damage the skin condition. The heavy minerals and other chemicals used in cosmetics actually act negatively on the facial skin and also are likely to trigger the production of free radicals responsible for premature aging.

Some cosmetics Vegan, besides containing chemical components, unfortunately, are also made in factories that comply with national and international rules, but that use polluting techniques and equipment. Finally, the last sore point of some products Vegan is the packaging, which is not made with biodegradable materials or there is an excessive wrapping, with the consequent expenditure of paper.

Cosmetic Make up for the Bio Vegan are made not only in respect of animals, but also respecting the environment and eco-sustainability. The products Make-up for the Bio Vegan are made only with natural products of biological origin, and are not added harmful chemical ingredients to the skin. In addition to being attentive to the composition of products, the philosophy Bio Vegan also provides industrial processes eco-friendly and less polluting. For example, many companies use renewable energy and processes simple that pollute the least. Finally, even the packaging is very important fact, these companies seek to use only biodegradable and recyclable products.

Where to buy cosmetics for Make up Bio Vegan?

To buy cosmetics ideal for creating an excellent Make up Bio Vegan, you can go to different channels. First of all there are several physical stores, including Italian companies such as The erbolario, which produce Eco-Bio cosmetics. If you do not find a physical store near your home you can opt for online purchase. Online you can buy countless products to Make Up Bio Vegan even those that are produced abroad, plus of course the various cosmetics made by Italian companies. The cost of Bio-vegan cosmetics is slightly higher than normal, but it is a small surcharge for products that nourish the skin and respect the environment and animals.

What our fans are saying...

I love the coverage this product provides. It’s the perfect shade as well. I use it to conceal any dark spots. It super convenient. Most of all I love it’s minimal and natural ingredients!!!!

Ive bought a few foundations this past year and honestly I love this coverage.

this foundation is thin, doesn't feel heavy, stays put all day, dries down to a matte/satin finish, is buildable, & overs coverage! everything i've ever wanted in a foundation! i purchased both their concealer stick & liquid concealer & the liquid concealer pairs soooo well with this foundation! i love both SO MUCH! the only thing i dislike is how strong the smell is, it smells strong like vanilla cake, & as someone that is sensitive to smells i would love if this foundation was completely fragrance free - i'm not sure if the scent is completely natural but i'm assuming it is since there is vanilla in the ingredients!

Just what I've been looking for!! Beautiful color and coverage! I'm happy to be a loyal customer!! Thank you for all these lovely beauty products!

My favorite mascara for like 7 years now. It never irritates my eyes like other mascaras do. Good natural ingredients and lengthens my lashes beautifully!

Goes on smooth and feels so light. Love the texture and tone.

The shade is great for my skin and I like the way it blends. It’s a little heavier than I wanted, but it blends so well, I can overlook this detail.

Goes on nicely. Comes off cleanly.

I’ve been using this foundation for years. It’s clean and the colors blend well. Doesn’t dry out my skin. Little bummed it’s not sold on Amazon anymore, but thankfully EVXO has a good free shipping offer.

Love this stuff, been using it for years. It stays on all day but is easy to remove. I use an old mascara wand to fluff my brows after applying, and it makes it look more natural. If I have no time to get ready (or don’t feel like it), I will at least use this stuff and put on some lip balm and it does wonders. I found EVXO because I was looking for natural, vegan beauty products and they deliver! My only suggestion would be to replace the plastic packaging with zero waste alternatives in the future!

This foundation is my fav! It’s buildable coverage and looks dewy on the skin. It also doesn’t break me out like most do since my skin is so sensitive ❤️

Such a great foundation, goes on smooth with a dewey finish…love it!!

This foundation is sooo nice on your skin and is light-weight but also buildable. I never feel like I'm hurting my skin when I wear it and it gives me a natural, no-makeup look. I have been using it for 2 years now and will keep repurchasing! Also, the customer service is great :)

10 Vegan Makeup Brands and Products at Sephora That We Always Restock

In the past, living a vegan lifestyle meant you were limited to that one health food store that smelled like peas. Thankfully, things have changed. You can get tasty vegan meals delivered right to your door and find plenty of vegan makeup options at your local Sephora.

But first, how do you define vegan makeup?

The simplest definition is that the product is free of animal-derived ingredients and animal by-products (like milk, honey, beeswax, carmine or lanolin).

Another term you may come across while shopping is “cruelty-free,” which is often lumped in with “vegan” products but doesn’t mean the same thing. If a product is labeled “cruelty-free,” that just means it hasn’t been tested on animals.

And here’s where it gets a bit confusing: A product can be vegan and still have been tested on animals. Likewise, a cruelty-free product can contain animal ingredients. If you want to make sure that a product is both vegan and cruelty-free, you’ll have to scan the label carefully.

Is the Sephora collection cruelty-free?

When it comes to the retailer’s own brand, its official stance is that Sephora doesn’t test its products on animals and “will not ask others to do so on [their] behalf, unless it’s required by law in specific countries where [they] operate.” And while the company advocates “for the development and implementation of alternative methods,” it doesn’t enforce these methods.

In short, no, the Sephora collection is not currently cruelty-free (though they may offer some vegan products within the line).

Does having a “Clean at Sephora” seal mean those products are also vegan?

You’ve likely seen the green “ Clean at Sephora ” stamp on products throughout Sephora stores and on its website over the last few years. The seal certifies that the product is free of sulfates (SLS and SLES), parabens, formaldehydes, phthalates, mercury compounds, animal fats and more than 50 harmful ingredients on Sephora’s “formulated without list,” which is continually updated as new information is made available.

Per the brand: “’Formulated without’ does not guarantee ‘100 percent free from’ since trace contaminants are possible. It is not the intention of Clean at Sephora to test for trace contaminants or guarantee 100 percent free-from, but we encourage our brands to engage in thorough contaminant testing of raw materials and final formulas.”

Are Sephora cosmetics vegan?

The mega retailer is home to a surprising number of cruelty-free and vegan makeup brands, which is handy since there’s a Sephora in virtually every city and suburb these days. Still, it can be overwhelming to parse through the options, so keep an eye out for the “vegan” seal or check out the vegan section of their website . Or you can shop 10 pre-vetted products ahead.

How to Shop for All Natural Shampoo, According to Your Hair Type

vegan makeup brands at sephora anastasia beverly hills

1. Anastasia Beverly Hills

Anastasia Beverly Hills is arguably one of the biggest beauty brands to emerge from the last two decades. (And in fact, with over 19 million fans on Instagram alone, its following is still one of the largest to date.) Though the brand itself is not entirely vegan, it does have a number of vegan products within the line. Our favorite? The brow freeze wax, because it gives you a nicely feathered arch that stays in place all day.

vegan makeup brands at sephora milk makeup

2. Milk Makeup

Since its launch in 2016, Milk Makeup has focused on keeping its ingredients as clean as possible. In addition to leaving out the usual suspects (i.e., parabens, sulfates, SLS, SLES, formaldehyde, mineral oil and talc), it’s also 100% vegan and cruelty-free. The trendsetting brand is known for its innovative textures and packaging and its new liquid blush is no exception. Infused with hyaluronic acid and mushroom extracts, it gives your cheeks a soft flush of color that can easily be sheered out or built up as needed.

vegan makeup brands at sephora rare beauty

3. Rare Beauty

Selena Gomez’s beloved line is cruelty-free and vegan and certified by PETA’s “Beauty Without Bunnies” program. Also of note: The outer packaging is made from FSC-certified recyclable materials and printed with water-based ink. We’re fans of the lip souffle, which is a matte lipstick that has a whipped texture that doesn’t feel drying on and a satisfying color payoff.

vegan makeup brands at sephora merit beauty

4. Merit Beauty

If you want to streamline your makeup bag, look no further than Merit Beauty. The brand is newer to the scene than the others on this list, but it’s already earned a permanent spot in our routine thanks to the ease of use of all its products—especially the tinted lip oil, which we never get tired of applying. Rest assured, everything in the line is vegan and cruelty-free, and certified by Leaping Bunny.

vegan makeup brands at sephora too faced cosmetics

5. Too Faced Cosmetics

As of writing, Too Faced’s “Better Than Sex” mascara is the number-one selling prestige mascara in America and the number-one cruelty-free prestige mascara. It’s also one of the top vegan offerings in the expansive line (along with its “Born This Way” Foundation and Super Coverage Concealer).

vegan makeup brands at sephora kosas

It’s no secret that we love Kosas here. The clean beauty brand has had a steady slew of hits—from their tinted face oil foundation to brow gel—and while it’s not 100 percent vegan, it’s cruelty-free and has some standout vegan options, like the creamy concealer (which we’ve relied on heavily this past year before Zoom calls).

vegan makeup brands at sephora kvd beauty

7. Kvd Beauty

With a tagline that proudly states, “makeup made with love, not animals,” KVD is and has been a leading vegan beauty brand since its inception back in 2008. The brand is also a TikTok favorite, repeatedly selling out of their Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm this year. As one of our editors raves : “The application process is *chef’s kiss*. The second I applied the foundation, it left my skin with a soft, matte finish. I only had to glide my brush across the product about three times to completely cover my face.”

vegan makeup brands at sephora hourglass cosmetics

8. Hourglass Cosmetics

Not so fun fact: Many lipsticks on the market have carmine in them, which is a red pigment that’s made from crushed insects. Hourglass created a special-edition lipstick that uses Red 0, an alternative to carmine, that’s 100-percent vegan and insect-free. Better yet, the color itself is a true red that instantly brightens up your face and the texture is rich and non-drying.

vegan makeup brands at sephora athr beauty

9. Athr Beauty

Founded by Tiila Abbitt in 2018 (who was previously the lead R+D for sustainable materials at Sephora, while also serving on the sustainability leadership council for the retailer), the brand is as sustainability minded as it is ingredient conscious. Known for creating the first zero-waste eye shadow palette , it also identifies as a cruelty-free and vegan brand that is both Leaping Bunny Approved and PETA Certified.

vegan makeup brands at sephora tarte cosmetics

10. Tarte Cosmetics

Tarte Cosmetics is cruelty-free but not 100 percent vegan. As stated on its website: “Many of our products are vegan—just search for the vegan logo on the product image! Or shop the full list of our vegan makeup & skincare here .” (Lucky for us, the iconic Shape Tape concealer and the Hydroflex serum foundation are included in that list.)

30 Natural and Organic Makeup Brands You’ll Feel Good Putting on Your Face

UPDATE-best-natural-organic-makeup-brands-thumbnail

The labels “natural" and "organic" aren't strictly reserved for the produce aisles anymore—these popular buzzwords can now refer to everything from skincare to textiles. And while many of today's beauty brands pride themselves on being sustainable and cruelty-free with products containing natural ingredients, it can be difficult to tell what these claims actually mean.

You may find yourself trying to decipher these marketing messages as you browse for cleaner beauty alternatives, and you're not alone. When it comes to the beauty industry, the criteria used for certifying a product as "organic," "natural," or "clean" can be a bit confusing, but don't worry—we're here to break it down and show you the best natural makeup brands.

About the Experts:

Sheila Farhang , MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and double fellowship-trained in cosmetic surgery, cutaneous oncology, and reconstructive surgery. She's the founder of her practice, Avant Dermatology & Aesthetics , and co-founder of her start-up health tech company, Vispera.

Bobby awadalla , md, is a board-certified dermatologist and mohs micrographic surgeon. he is also active in research and has authored numerous articles in the field of dermatology, as well as seven books in the skincredible series., what is clean, natural, and organic beauty.

"Clean beauty" is a vague umbrella statement," says Sheila Farhang , MD, board-certified dermatologist at Avant Dermatology & Aesthetics. "A lot of skincare companies are defining this for us, but it is not equal across the board." Surprisingly, the FDA doesn't use the term "organic" to refer to beauty products, so a label of "organic" strictly refers to the USDA-certified food grade.

The term "natural" when used to describe makeup products, on the other hand, refers to non-synthetic ingredients. "The important thing to note is that it is not enough for a product to claim it's organic," says Bobby Awadalla , MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Skincredible Dermatology. The product must also have the certification to prove it. Similarly, the word "natural" on makeup packaging doesn't always amount to much in the cosmetics industry.

It would be best if you looked for a stamp of approval from Ecocert or COSMOS Natural, two European organizations that have developed guidelines for products to fit the "natural" criteria. Once you see their stamp of approval, you can feel good trusting the brand’s claims, as these two organizations "have a stringent protocol they have to follow to get the certification," says Dr. Awadalla. "These criteria are often very strict in the origin of each ingredient, manufacturing, and packaging of the product," he explains.

One more thing to keep in mind: If a product is marked "non-toxic," that means it isn't made with harmful ingredients deemed unsafe by the Environmental Working Group—although, again, the criteria that allow a brand to identify as non-toxic aren't clearly regulated. Encompassing all of these descriptors (organic, natural, and non-toxic) is the blanket term "clean beauty." "A clean beauty stamp focuses on safe, non-toxic ingredients," explains Dr. Awadalla.

The 30 Best Natural and Organic Makeup Brands

You already know that you are what you eat, but since you are also what you put on your face, here are 30 great beauty brands to get you started on a cleaner path.

1.  KJAER WEIS

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kjaer Weis (@kjaerweis)

It's a common misconception that clean beauty can't look and feel like a luxury product—but KJAER WEIS is proof you can have it all. Developed by a makeup-artist founder, the products do more than look pretty (although it is difficult to look past the shiny chrome packaging); they perform like few can. The products are all packed with skin-boosting ingredients, so it isn't easy to play favorites, but we're fond of the Cream Blush , which blends right into the skin, giving your complexion a sun-kissed glow. Additionally, the lipsticks , which pack plenty of pigment, are a fan favorite. Plus, a huge draw to the brand is that the products are refillable.

2.  RITUEL DE FILLE

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rituel de Fille (@ritueldefille)

Not your mother's natural beauty brand, RITUEL DE FILLE is truly an original in the natural makeup space. Taking the magical side of clean ingredients to a literal level, the brand embodies a witchy, celestial aesthetic that you won't see among any other natural beauty brand. Think names like ‘Love Spell’ and ‘Cultist’ paired with constellation-inspired packaging. If you're looking to impart a glow on your skin that’s visible from space, the Rare Light Luminizer is a must-try. Or, for an otherworldly eye pigment, the Color Nectar Pigment Balm is written in the stars for you.

3.  100% PURE

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 100% PURE (@100percentpure)

This comprehensive brand gets an A+ or 100% (see what we did there?) on product range. Aside from fruit-pigmented color cosmetics, 100% PURE also offers skincare, hair care, and body products, making it the perfect one-stop to overhaul your entire routine. If you're looking for an easy intro to the brand, the pigmented Long Last Liquid Eyeliner is aptly named for its all-day-wear formula. And speaking of eyes, the Tea Fiber Brow Builder is just what you need for a trendy fluffy arch.

4.  LAWLESS

View this post on Instagram A post shared by LAWLESS (@lawless)

If ever there were a clean beauty brand to break the rules, it would be LAWLESS. An influencer favorite, LAWLESS has a range of super pigmented products, trendy colors, luscious finishes, and oversize palettes that feel anything but natural. The founder, Annie Lawless, is a certified holistic health coach, yoga instructor, wellness blogger, and leader of one of the largest organic cold-pressed juice companies in the country, Suja Juice. So it's no surprise that her latest venture, LAWLESS, boasts an ingredient list free from common culprits (like parabens, phthalates, and PEGs) and takes out anything that could be carcinogenic or hormone endocrine-disrupting. The One Talc-Free Eyeshadow Palette , an excellent place to start experimenting with the brand, is packed with 18 shadows, including matte and shimmery shades.

5.  W3LL PEOPLE

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Well People (@wellpeople)

If there's one thing you should know about this versatile and affordable brand of handcrafted cosmetics, it's that W3LL PEOPLE boasts a list of over 30 products that are EWG-verified. We love that the cruelty-free and natural cosmetics in this collection both provide the color and coverage you crave, all while soothing and feeding your skin. And the best part is that you can find W3LL PEOPLE on your next drugstore run—consider picking up the Expressionist Pro Mascara or the Bio Correct Concealer while you're there.

6.  INIKA ORGANIC

View this post on Instagram A post shared by INIKA Organic (@inikaorganic)

This certified organic, cruelty-free brand meets the COSMOS Natural and COSMOS Organic certifications and is committed to creating 70% certified organic, 100% certified natural, and 100% certified vegan products. Our favorite products from the brand include the Certified Organic Full-Coverage Concealer and the Baked Mineral Bronzer —both of which deliver the coverage you want without the harmful ingredients.

7.  THE ORGANIC SKIN CO.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Organic Skin Co. (@theorganicskinco)

This New Zealand-based makeup and skincare brand is vegan, cruelty-free, and comes with the BioGro stamp of approval. BioGro is an organic certification agency based in New Zealand that operates with the same standards as Natrue in the U.S. When you see the BioGro stamp on THE ORGANIC SKIN CO. products, that means the item contains over 70% organic ingredients.

The brand goes a step further and offers full transparency on each and every package, breaking down the individual item's organic and natural percentage to take the guesswork out of shopping for beauty you can feel good about. Be sure to reach for the Primp N' Prime Primer , which is packed with antioxidants and restorative oils.

8.  JUICE BEAUTY

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Juice Beauty (@juicebeauty)

The L'Oréal Group's Stance on Ethical Ingredient Sourcing

Is nyx professional makeup sustainable, alternative cruelty free and ethical brands to try.

NYX Professional Makeup is a drugstore cosmetics brand perhaps best known for its highly saturated eye products. It is certified cruelty free by PETA—not Leaping Bunny—and is relatively vegan-friendly. One of the problems conscious beauty shoppers run into with NYX Professional Makeup is its lack of transparency around ethics and sustainability.

The brand has been owned by the L'Oréal Group since 2014. L'Oréal is not certified cruelty free because many of its products—not including NYX Professional Makeup—are sold in China. However, the group is praised for being transparent about its supply chain and has announced ambitious sustainability targets for 2030.

Read more about these initiatives to make an informed decision on whether NYX Professional Makeup meets your standards.

Treehugger's Green Beauty Standards: NYX Professional Makeup

  • Cruelty Free: Certified by PETA, not by Leaping Bunny.
  • Vegan: Offers more than 100 vegan products.
  • Ethical: L'Oréal is a signee of the United Nations Global Compact and a founding member of the Responsible Mica Initiative.
  • Sustainable: L'Oréal has committed to ambitious sustainability targets but still has a long way to go before its brands can be truly sustainable.

NYX Professional Makeup Is PETA-Certified Cruelty Free

NYX Professional Makeup calls its cosmetics 100% cruelty free and says it does not test on animals. PETA backs that claim by featuring its Beauty Without Bunnies logo on all NYX Professional Makeup products; however, the brand is not cruelty free-certified by the distinguished Leaping Bunny Program.

Leaping Bunny does not certify brands whose parent companies test on animals, only making exceptions for already-certified brands that have been purchased by non-certified parent companies and that "promise to operate as stand-alone subsidiaries with their own supply chains."

L'Oréal, NYX's parent company, is on PETA's "do test" list. The company says that although it doesn't test products or ingredients on animals, it sells in China. According to PETA, cosmetics sold in China "are required by law to be tested on animals by government agencies"—although this policy changed in 2021 .

As a result of China's traditional practices regarding animal testing, NYX Professional Makeup is not sold in the country.

Some NYX Professional Makeup Products Are Vegan

NYX Professional Makeup is not a fully vegan company, but it does offer about 120 vegan products.

Vegan products—everything from foundation to lip gloss to setting sprays and beyond—are easy to find and clearly marked on the brand's website. Products that are not labeled as vegan could contain beeswax , carmine (a red coloring derived from the cochineal insect), or other animal products.

"As part of our pledge to offer more conscientious choices, our selection of vegan-friendly faves is growing all the time," the brand says. Its best-selling Bare With Me Concealer Serum is vegan.

The L'Oréal Group's Code of Ethics document is 40 pages long and addresses human rights, environmental stewardship, diversity, and fair treatment of suppliers, among other topics. The company has also been a signee of the United Nations Global Compact since 2003, meaning it must comply with the pact's 10 principles of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.

In 2010, the company founded the Solidarity Sourcing program, aimed to support people from vulnerable communities with "social and inclusive purchasing." This program provides transparency around ingredients like shea butter and mica , the latter largely associated with child labor and unsafe working conditions in India.

While many beauty companies have started sourcing their mica from elsewhere, L'Oréal has intentionally remained in India because it believes "discontinuing the use of Indian mica would further weaken the situation in the region." That said, the group is a founding member of the Responsible Mica Initiative .

In the "Environmental Stewardship" section of L'Oréal's Code of Ethics, the group vows to favor the use of renewable, raw materials, use eco-friendly packaging, reduce travel, conserve water and energy, and avoid waste as much as possible. "Where waste is unavoidable," the document states, "we must ensure materials are recycled or disposed of in a responsible fashion."

In 2013, the group announced its Sharing Beauty With All program aimed at sustainable growth. A 2020 report marking the end of the program and seven years of progress revealed that L'Oréal had reduced its internal emissions by 81% since 2005 and launched 96% of new products with an "improved social or environmental profile." It fell short of targets to reduce water use and waste by 60% percent each—ending up with 49% and 37% reductions, respectively.

The report also addressed palm oil —which, according to the brand, is 100% sourced from Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil -certified suppliers—and plastic packaging. Much of NYX Professional Makeup's products currently come in single-use or difficult-to-recycle plastic, but L'Oréal aims to make all plastic packaging refillable, reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.

NYX Professional Makeup and the L'Oréal Group are bettering their ethics and sustainability every year, but if the brand still isn't meeting your standards—whether because many products contain Indian mica or are packaged in virgin, non-recyclable plastic—then here are some cruelty free and ethical alternatives.

It isn't easy finding a sustainable cosmetics brand that does color the way NYX Professional Makeup does. Rest assured Axiology 's hues pack a punch. You can even shop by color on the brand's website. Axiology is 100% vegan, cruelty- and palm oil-free, and largely zero-waste.

Another brand famous for offering vibrant color is Dab Herb , also known for its holistic approach to makeup and skin care. Its powder eyeshadows, for instance, are made of "real organic petals, roots, seeds, leaves, and detoxifying clays." No need to test on animals when the product is plucked straight from the earth.

If you're looking for an alternative to NYX Professional Makeup that you can still pick up from the drugstore, try CoverGirl. While not as eco-forward as some of the more indie brands, CoverGirl is certified cruelty free and has an abundance of vegan options.

Veganism in the Makeup Industry

Milk+Makeup+is+a+vegan+makeup+line%2C+meaning+their+products+are+completely+free+of+animal+products.+%0A

Vegan: this word can elicit many emotions, but how about if it was in reference to make-up and not food? Do these feelings change? Many people might react by saying all make-up is vegan, after all, you don’t expect to find milk and eggs in your blush. However, this is not always the case, and with recent animal-friendly initiatives, many cosmetic companies have chosen to go vegan as well as cruelty-free. So what’s the difference?

A person living a traditional vegan lifestyle won’t eat or wear anything that came from an animal, meat or byproducts. Accordingly, vegan make-up is anything that animal products or ingredients. Now more than ever before consumers are being more conscious about their ecological impact, with a quarter of millennials identifying as vegan or vegetarian according to The Economist. They actually went so far as to claim 2019 as “the year of the vegan”.

However, according to this definition, vegan doesn’t guarantee cruelty-free. A cruelty-free cosmetic is one that has none of its components or the finished product tested on animals. This translates to consumers having to do research about the products they are buying to make sure they are not being misled by the labeling. This being noted, there are also many companies that are both cruelty-free and vegan.

“I would do my best to research the company and make sure that they are cruelty-free or vegan so that no animals are being subjected to any form of unnecessary testing,” Courtney Herzog, member of The Animal Rights Association at SJU recommended . “The good thing about the makeup industry today though is that most companies are moving towards being cruelty-free, so hopefully one day they all will be.”

PETA, a very active animal rights activist group, keeps a running list of vegan companies that don’t test on animals . Some popular cosmetic brands are Dermablend, Milani, Too Faced, Tarte, Urban Decay, Wet n’ Wild, Lush, and Kat Von D Beauty. These products run the gamut, so if you wanted to it’s possible to replace every step of your beauty routine with items that are cruelty-free and vegan, even your brushes!

make up bio vegan

Nanshy is one of these vegan makeup application tool companies, and they bullet reasons to go vegan with your makeup routine on their website. First, it’ll prevent dead animal by-products, such as uric acid and dead insect extracts (like Carmine for pigmentation) from touching your skin. Secondly, as well as being animal-friendly you’ll be eco-friendly as vegan makeup’s packaging is typically made from recycled materials.” Finally, in this newly veganized era, there is no shortage of different products to efficiently and affordably continue your normal routine.

This movement of cruelty-free and vegan make-up has gained so much momentum that when a product isn’t certified or goes backs to testing on animals, there is public outrage. As cited by the New York Times, this is exactly what happened when Estée Lauder and Revlon began retesting on animals in order to sell in China, where it is legally required. The Guardian also cites a similar case where “Nars announced it would have to test its products on animals in order to be sold in China” and “a petition against the company’s new stance on animal testing attracted nearly 250,000 signatures”.

Dr. Dennis Gross, a dermatologist, notices in the same New York Times article that Gen Z consumers look to purchase products that are in line with their personal values, and these shopping habits a huge drive for change in the industry. People have begun pushing animal rights issues to the forefront of the conversation and companies are listening – it’s up to consumers to decide what their personal values are and which companies they accordingly support.

Where Has Tracy Chapman Been?

Her triumphant performance at the Grammy Awards left fans wondering what she has been doing since she left the music world, and whether she might return.

  • Share full article

Tracy Chapman, in a black button-up shirt and jeans, plays an acoustic guitar on a stage with a microphone and lights on it.

By Ben Sisario and Heather Knight

Ben Sisario reported from New York and Heather Knight from San Francisco

Tracy Chapman’s rare public appearance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night — where she practically stole the show performing her 1988 song “Fast Car” with the country singer Luke Combs — left many fans wondering why she had largely stepped away from music for more than a decade.

Despite some scattered performances on television and at awards shows, Chapman, 59, has remained almost entirely absent from the music world in recent years, having released her last studio album in 2008 and done her last tour in 2009. Since she first emerged in the late 1980s, she has always been known as a reclusive and private figure.

“Being in the public eye and under the glare of the spotlight was, and it still is, to some extent, uncomfortable for me,” she told The Irish Times in 2015 . “There are some ways by which everything that has happened in my life has prepared me for this career. But I am bit shy.”

The acclaim for her Grammys performance — Taylor Swift could be seen singing along in the crowd — was a sign of how beloved Chapman remains. Combs’s note-for-note cover of “Fast Car” went to No. 2 on Billboard’s pop singles chart last year, and after the Grammys, Chapman’s original began shooting up iTunes’s download chart.

After her debut LP, “Tracy Chapman,” was released in 1988 — and went to No. 1 on the Billboard chart — she released seven more studio albums. Her last, “Our Bright Future,” came out in 2008. Jon Pareles of The New York Times described it as a collection of “morose love songs” as well as “her latest utopian vision of a world without war or greed.”

What has she been up to?

Since then her appearances have been few and far between. She performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012 , playing for the blues guitarist Buddy Guy, who was one of the honorees that year. She turned up at David Letterman’s final shows in 2015, doing “Stand by Me.” And on the eve of the presidential election in 2020, she appeared on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” performing “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution” from her debut album; after the last notes, she moved aside to reveal a sign behind her saying “vote.”

Last year, as Combs’s version of “Fast Car” became a surprise hit, the tune won song of the year at the Country Music Association Awards, making Chapman the first Black songwriter to win that prize. (She did not appear to accept it.)

A quiet life in San Francisco

Chapman is so private that many San Franciscans were surprised to learn after the Grammys that she lives in their city. She’s not part of the socialite scene or involved in politics, and she seems to mostly avoid major events.

But she can still be seen around town. The owner of a bookstore where she sometimes shops posted on X after her Grammys performance that she was “so down to earth in real life” when spotted buying food for her dog at a local pet store. (The post was later deleted.) Others have observed her standing in line at a popular bakery. Before the pandemic, she served as a judge for a high school scholarship program run by the founders of “Beach Blanket Babylon,” a now-defunct cabaret.

Lee Houskeeper, a public relations executive and music promoter in San Francisco, said he had met Chapman a few times at her studio and rehearsal space. He said she was very nice and that they had chatted about performing artists they both know.

A state assemblyman, Matt Haney, said he’s only seen her once, at a school board meeting in 2018 when he served on that board. She was there to support the school district naming a theater on its property after her friend Sydney Goldstein. It now houses San Francisco’s popular City Arts & Lectures program.

“She didn’t make a big deal of being there,” Haney recalled in an interview. “I don’t think she even came to the mic.”

Could she return?

The Grammys performance instantly became a career highlight for Chapman, and it could well stoke demand for her return to recording and touring. This year she is also nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame . If she is inducted — a good bet — that could provide another opportunity for a public appearance.

“There’s always been demand for Tracy Chapman to return to performing,” Rich McLaughlin, the program director at WFUV, a radio station in New York that celebrates songwriters, said in an email. “Whether or not it will increase the chances of her doing so, however, is difficult to predict.”

Chapman’s longtime fans may have their fingers crossed, but they have also learned patience.

“Tracy Chapman is an artist who follows her muse, not market demand,” McLaughlin added. “If she based her decision solely on demand, she’d have returned to touring years ago.”

An earlier version of this article misspelled the surname of a public relations executive and music promoter. He is Lee Houskeeper, not Housekeeper.

An earlier version of this article described incorrectly Tracy Chapman’s Kennedy Center Honors performance in 2012. She performed in tribute to Buddy Guy, not with him.
