Overview • Study Introduction • Literature Review • Research Method • Findings • Discussion and Recommendations
Introduction What does a typical library website look like? • We decided to ask ! • Our nationwide study involved all academic and public libraries from all 50 states examining website design, layout, content, and site management.
Literature • Websites are akin to exits off a main freeway, a promise of potential adventure and intrigue and have less time than ever, as little as 25-35 seconds (Nielsen & Loranger, 2006) • In reviewing the literature, there have been many studies describing usability testing and research done on singular institutional websites for one individual library; broad studies focusing on public and academic libraries, however, are not common
Literature (2) • Liu (2009) also made a list of innovative features of website and found that 30 libraries had RSS feeds, four had personalized library spaces, and almost all had live chat as a reference communication tool. • Solomon (2005) conducted a survey of public library websites in Ohio, using a checklist of 61 usability guidelines, features and content. Overall Solomon found that only 35 of the 211 websites surveyed met 80% of her criteria and she noted that important features were missing such as privacy policies, site searches, and feedback mechanisms.
Literature (3) • Usability studies have shown that creating websites with usability guidelines are important as, “patrons who cannot successfully complete specific tasks may not revisit the site” (Chen et al 2009, 963). • Connell (2008) found from a survey of web developers in academic libraries that only 46.8% of them had conducted usability testing of any kind on their websites
Literature (4) • Usability & Usability Testing • ISO 9241-11 (1998): The effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction with which specified users achieve specified goals in particular environments (ISO, 1998). • Utility and Ease-of-Use (Nielsen, 2001) • User-Centered Design (UCD; ) or human centered design • “development proceeds with the user as the center of focus” (Rubin, 1984).
Literature (5) • King (2003) suggests that you first envision your site as a business with information being the product. “…usability studies play a vital role in making sure library users can find information on your Web site quickly and accurately” (p. 13). • Liu (2009) found that "the universe of information presented on academic library homepages still focuses on library functions, requires numerous pathways for access, has overwhelming options, and takes a 'one-design-for-all' approach that fails to recognize users as individuals"(11).
Research Questions • A comprehensive review of the literature revealed no large scale study had been conducted to determine the current state of academic and public library websites • RQ1: What is a standard design layout for academic and public library websites? • RQ2: What are the common features and content academic and public library websites include? • RQ3: Who designs and maintains academic and public library websites? • RQ4: To what extent do academic and public library websites adhere to recommended design guidelines?
Method • 1,469 websites were analyzed for the study • The Library Website Usability Checklist (n=203) • Systematic evaluations of randomly selected sites • The Library Website Survey (n=1,266) • Self-reports from the nation’s libraries
Method (2) • The Library Website Usability Checklist (n=203) • 67 questions divided into five discrete sections – site information, recommended website features, content, feature placement, and recommended information architecture and usability factors • four library websites from each state and the District of Columbia stratified into four categories: one rural public library, one urban public library, one private academic library, and one public academic library.
Method (3) • The instrument was comprised of a total of 44 questions broken down into five sections – general information (4), web design and management (5) , feature checklist (5), content (22), and page location and placement (8). • Over three quarters (76.9%) of our responding libraries were public libraries, while only 23.1% were academic libraries • Breakdown of patron-bases served
Findings (2)
Findings (3)
Findings (4)
Public vs. Academic Websites
Conclusions & Recommendations • Library websites had excellent results for the standard contents only • Web 2.0 tools were not found on 25.2% of the libraries surveyed in the LWUC and on 73.6% of the libraries in the LWES • 40-60% of library websites did not provide access to their special collections via their websites
Typical library web design • RQ1: What is a standard design layout for academic and public library websites?
Typical Content • RQ2: What are the common features and content academic and public library websites include?
Answers to Research Questions • RQ3: Who designs and maintains academic and public library websites?
Answers to Research Questions • RQ4: To what extent do academic and public library websites adhere to recommended design guidelines?
Conclusions and Recommendations • Information and Content is good (80% favorable rating from evaluators) • ‘snap-shot’ of library website design, content, maintenance, and usability • Main findings: • Content: Search feature, feedback, Web 2.0 features (RSS feeds, social networking, ability to state opinions or be content creators), virtual reference services, location and contact information • Design: Logo is left top header, navigation is side left, contact information is bottom center, and search box (when available) top right. • Usability: Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Satisfaction need to be designed in and frequently tested.
Thank You!! Much of these findings are in new book Library Technology and User Services (Chow & Bucknall, 2008) coming out in November 2011. • Anthony Chow [email protected] anthonyschow.wordpress.com • Christian Burris [email protected]

What Makes a Good Library Website? by Sabrina Unrein
In the autumn of 2018, the iSchool Public Library Initiative (IPLI) worked on a project that involved collecting library statistics. One of the main sources for this data were state library websites. As a former web developer, as well as a patron of these pages, it was difficult for me to not notice the lack of consistency in usability and design. I began brainstorming what made certain websites great, and what any library could do to improve their patrons’ experience.
Download the IPLI Paper: What Makes a Good Library Website? (PDF)
That process inspired this paper. This paper was developed as a tool to evaluate their current web design and features for librarians and their website administrators. It involved using and evaluating all 50 state library websites and noting what made some websites more successful than others, as well as general trends in design.
How websites and libraries should co-exist
Some library websites feel disconnected from the library as a whole. Rather than looking at a library’s web presence as a burden or an obligation, libraries should see their website as an extension of the library itself.
Like the physical library space, library collections, and library services and programs, the library’s website is an iterative project that requires maintenance and care. Websites should be updated and evaluated regularly. They must strive to meet the specific needs of the community the library serves.
What needed improvement
There were several features that consistently came up as needing improvement. One was outdated design, and how those designs often equate to inaccessibility for patrons using screen readers, or how difficult those websites might be for patrons to use. Improvements in one area can often lead to solutions for other problems patrons may face. For instance, updating a website’s design will likely make it more accessible.
Not all library websites need to look alike or perform the same functions. But they should all take into consideration security, accessibility, design, contact information, and what can make their website stand out as particularly useful to their patrons. This paper addresses those topics, and proposes potential solutions to the following problems:
- Avoiding an ADA lawsuit by improving accessibility for all patrons
- Making a website’s design look more modern and easy to use
- Implementing HTTPS improves search engine optimization (SEO)
- The importance of web security
I hope that this paper proves useful in evaluating library websites of all types. Especially working as a tool for advocacy. Websites and libraries together could provide a new dimension to education and accessibility. This spreads the love for books and libraries everywhere.

7 Best Practices for Creating a User Friendly Library Website
Students Find Library Websites Difficult To Use
According to a 2015 EBSCO survey on undergraduates’ research workflow, 40 percent of students rate their library websites moderate to very challenging and 15 percent never use them.
A challenging library website is a research roadblock to an already time-constrained student. Here are 7 Best Practices to ensure your website is utilized by all your students and meets their expectations.
1. Have a Vision
A vision defines your library website’s goals. It also guides and inspires decisions about your library website.
Recommendations
- Keep the statement to one to two sentences.
- Align it with the library’s and institution’s mission statements.
2. Easy Access to Search
Search is the primary action a user takes on the library website.
- Make the search box prominent on the home page.
- Have one search box on a page.
- Provide a description or an example within the search box or search box area to set users’ expectations.
- For a multi-tabbed search box, label tabs in plain language and default to your discovery service.
3. Keep Navigation Simple
Too many navigation options may prevent your users from accessing what they need.
“ I don’t want to have to navigate this site the way they want me to. I just want to find the thing I’m looking for. ” - Jakob Nielsen
- Display five to six main navigation items at the most. Do not overwhelm your users.
- Top-level navigation should represent high-level categories of your content.
- Common top navigation items include: Search, Services, Research, About Us, Help, My Account.
- Validate your navigation by conducting a paper card sort, or use these online tools: OptimalSort & Treejack (free and paid versions available).
4. Home Page is a Gateway
First impressions are critical. Your home page is typically the most visited page, and where your users begin their research.
- Do not clutter your home page with too many options.
- Give users just enough detail to make the decision to explore. “3 click rule” is not always the best practice.
Items to display on home page:
- Primary user actions (i.e., Search)
- Book a Study Room
- Location(s) & Hours
- Library News & Events
- Contact Us/ Ask-A-Librarian
5. Eliminate Library-ese
Library jargon (aka Library-ese) is one of the most reported issues identified in user testing. Unfamiliar terms are barriers to users fully utilizing library resources/services.
Terms Not Understood by Students
- HTML Full Text
- e-Book Full Text
- Trade Publication
- Weed your content!
- Write in plain language.
- Be aware of library-ese when branding your link resolver and/or discovery service.
- Provide explanatory text when needed.
- Do not rely on a glossary!
- Ask a non-librarian to validate your content.
- Conduct a survey or usability testing.
6. Empower All Your Users. Make the Library Website Accessible
Inaccessible websites are barriers to all users. Students with disabilities are faced with frustration and helplessness.
The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect . - Tim Berners-Lee, Father of the World Wide Web
- HTML Page Titles must be descriptive (i.e., Your Institution Library: Browse Journals).
- Link text must indicate intent or content.
- Images must have alt-text or off-screen text.
- Audio/Video content must include captioning or transcripts.
- Website must be navigable by keyboard only.
- If you display a carousel, do not set it to auto-play. Offer an option to stop.
- Validate that your website is usable for folks who are colorblind. Recommended Tool: Colour Contrast Analyser (free)
- Become familiar with screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA) and other assistive technologies used by your students.
- Test your library website for accessibility. Recommended Tool: WAVE (free)
7. Conduct Usability Testing
Testing users informs decisions about the library website. You have evidence to make and defend your decisions.
- To quote Jakob Nielsen, “Test early. Test often.”
- Start with paper prototypes (it can be just a rough sketch) continue through final designs.
- Testing five to seven users identifies 85 percent of usability issues.
- Schedule usability testing sessions monthly at same day/time.
- Want to test students anytime/anywhere? Unmoderated remote user testing is a quick way to get results. Recommended tool: usertesting.com
Recommended Tools and Resources:
Recommended tools:.
- OptimalSort & Treejack : Tool for testing navigation and terminology with your users. Both products offer a free version for testing with a limited number of users.
- Web Accessibility Validation Evaluator (WAVE) : Free tool that identifies accessibility errors. Tool checks that your website is compliant with the following guidelines: 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
- Colour Contrast Analyser : Free tool that verifies whether your library website is accessible for colorblind users. It also verifies that your design is in compliance with WCAG guidelines tied to the use of color.
- Content Readability : Tool evaluates the reading level of your content. Free to copy/paste content or URL.
- Usertesting.com : Tool to conduct moderated and unmoderated remote usability testing. You can recruit your own users or use their list of users based on your requirements.

8 Tips to Improve Your Library’s Website Design
During a recent presentation at a library marketing conference, I asked a group of about 150 library marketers: “How many of you like your library’s website?”
Of the 150 people, just one lone librarian raised her hand.
The rest looked around and nodded in defeated resignation–like, “Yup, we know our library’s website is outdated, but no, we don’t have the budget or skill-set to fix it.”
In reality, there are TONS of free updates you can make to your website, without being a web design expert. To get those creative juices flowing, here are eight tips for improving your library’s website design, that don’t require a developer.
1. Keep the carousel to a minimum
Carousels (also called “homepage sliders”) are a controversial topic in the web design world. Typically, we’d recommend cutting carousels all together, since they’ve been shown, time and time again, to hurt conversion rates.
*But* we recognize that libraries often have so much to promote, they need the carousel to ensure everyone within the organization has an easy avenue for promoting their services, resources, and events.
Keep in mind: carousels typically get very low engagement, with about 84% of visitors never making it past the first slide, according to a University of Notre Dame study.
But, if you *must* use a carousel, keep it at just four slides. Anything more than that clutters your homepage and most people won’t click through to your last slide, anyway.
Likewise, make sure your slide graphics are visible on mobile, by designing them with minimal copy and large type. For example, this slide looks fine on a desktop:
But is barely readable on mobile:
The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh opted for one static homepage image, coupled with non-rotating featured items—a great way to highlight multiple events and/or services without cluttering the design:
2. Cut links
We’ve come across dozens of library websites riddled with hyperlink, after hyperlink, after hyperlink . . . no more! Adding too many calls to action on any given page, particularly the homepage, clutters the design and distracts your users from the main thing(s) you want them to do. Determine what links should stay and what should go by installing heat-mapping software on your site. We use HotJar , which is free up to 1,000 pageviews. This tool allows you to base your website decisions on data, versus subjectivity.
Here’s a great example of a library website with about 30 links on the homepage—only three of which get engagement: search, library account, and catalog.
3. Simplify searching
Searching is one of the most (if not the most) typical action users want to take on your site, so make it easy for them to find. A few tips:
- Allow users to toggle in between a catalog and website search
- Include the search bar on every page (like the header or footer)
- Make searching prominent on the homepage
The Salt Lake City Public Library System calls out the search prominently on the homepage and keeps the search bar available on every page:
4. Watch for jargon
“Database,” “circulation,” “digital services,” and “interlibrary loan” all mean a lot to you and me . . . but mean absolutely nothing to the average patron. One of the first rules of web design is don’t make your website visitor think —jargony words do the opposite, often confusing visitors and making them think too much.
Make a list of “banned” library words, and encourage all website editors to weed their content and use straightforward, consumer-focused messaging instead of internal jargon.
Likewise, instead of listing third-party services (i.e. OverDrive, Freegal, RBdigital, etc.), communicate what people get (i.e. free eBooks, commercial-free music streaming, top digital magazines, etc.). Here’s a good example from one library’s “digital content” page:
While this is a content suggestion, content and design go hand-in-hand, so if your content is overwhelming, your design will be, too. Refining and eliminating content is a key step in improving your library’s website design.
5. A/B test
Websites are never a done deal—you should constantly look for ways to optimize the site to improve patron engagement. With this in mind, don’t be afraid to A/B test! We use Google Analytics Experiments , since it’s free and built into Google Analytics.
Here are a few testing ideas:
- Copy (test a variety of benefits, such as, “Access free digital content from home.” vs. “Download digital media anywhere, anytime.”)
- Imagery (test pictures of people, product covers, and illustrations)
- Layout (try moving items up or down on the page, add more imagery, or remove elements)
- Calls to action (test button color, placement, and copy)
We executed an A/B test for one of our library clients on their library card signup page. After moving the online form higher on the page and adding an image of someone pointing to the call to action, card signup conversions increased by 64% in three weeks!
6. Turn PDFs into web pages
Government websites are notoriously bloated with PDFs . . . policy PDFs, agenda PDFs, instructional PDFs, and so on. In fact, I just performed a content audit on a library website that had three times as many PDFs as web pages.
While PDFs can be a simple content solution if you don’t have time to create a page, they’re a real drain on SEO.
While Google *does* rank PDFs in search results (a myth that was debunked by Google in 2011), your PDFs need to be search engine optimized for them to rank; this includes creating a keyword-friendly document title, adding a meta description, including outbound links, using headings, keeping mobile in mind for the design, and avoiding saving PDFs as images, since Google will think it’s an image, not text.
The optimal way to create content on your site is to favor web pages over PDFs , since you have much more control over them and they’re easier to rank. A few pros of HTML pages over PDFs:
- A PDF is often a dead end, since they don’t offer regular site navigation, whereas with a page, you can easily engage with other site content.
- Some PDFs can have 50+ pages with multiple topics—it’s much easier to find and engage with this content if it’s broken into smaller chunks, organized by topic (and readability is a big component of SEO).
- HTML pages are much easier to manage internally, because they’re clearly organized in your content management system (i.e. they have a clear hierarchy with parent pages); PDFs, on the other hand, are often buried in text, making them harder to keep tabs on and know when to update/delete. (For example, that content audit I mentioned earlier? We ended up chopping about 80% of the PDFs because they were irrelevant or outdated.)
- This one’s the clincher: PDFs are much harder to make ADA compliant, since you can’t add “alt” tags to images; you also need to make other modifications, such as searchable text, bookmarks for PDFs longer than nine pages, tables that don’t split across pages, and you need to remove background images and/or watermarks. You can see a full checklist for making PDFs ADA accessible here .
In a nutshell, if you want to boost your SEO and streamline the user experience, turn your PDFs into HTML web pages.
7. REDUCE the primary navigation
We know, we know . . . libraries offer everything to everyone. But no one’s going to find what they need if you list everything in the primary navigation.
Web best practices are to include no more than seven primary navigation items. Our recommendation for most libraries is to include the following in the primary nav:
- Browse/borrow
- Events & Programs
- Kids & Teens
The Public Library of Brookline does a really nice job dividing up their primary navigation into four simple categories; the menu options drop-down to a clean mega menu that allows users to quickly navigate to internal pages.
8. Add a donation form
As librarians, “asking for the sell” isn’t exactly in your blood. But when it comes to marketing, sometimes you just have to go for it.
Like with any sell, asking for donations straight out is one of the best ways to get them . And as you probably know, budgets are tight for most libraries, making donations a key way for them to stay afloat.
To make donations easy, feature a “Give” and/or “Donate” call to action prominently on your website.
The New York Public Library added this page to the primary navigation, so it appears on every page across the site:
The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh took a different approach, with a prominent “give” CTA in the footer of every page:
Click on the “give” button and it takes you straight to a donation form, making it easy to select a donation amount, area of support, and billing details.

The HTML Presentation Framework
Created by Hakim El Hattab and contributors
Hello There
reveal.js enables you to create beautiful interactive slide decks using HTML. This presentation will show you examples of what it can do.
Vertical Slides
Slides can be nested inside of each other.
Use the Space key to navigate through all slides.
Basement Level 1
Nested slides are useful for adding additional detail underneath a high level horizontal slide.
Basement Level 2
That's it, time to go back up.
Not a coder? Not a problem. There's a fully-featured visual editor for authoring these, try it out at https://slides.com .
Pretty Code
Code syntax highlighting courtesy of highlight.js .
Even Prettier Animations
Point of view.
Press ESC to enter the slide overview.
Hold down the alt key ( ctrl in Linux) and click on any element to zoom towards it using zoom.js . Click again to zoom back out.
(NOTE: Use ctrl + click in Linux.)
Auto-Animate
Automatically animate matching elements across slides with Auto-Animate .
Touch Optimized
Presentations look great on touch devices, like mobile phones and tablets. Simply swipe through your slides.
Add the r-fit-text class to auto-size text
Hit the next arrow...
... to step through ...
... a fragmented slide.
Fragment Styles
There's different types of fragments, like:
fade-right, up, down, left
fade-in-then-out
fade-in-then-semi-out
Highlight red blue green
Transition Styles
You can select from different transitions, like: None - Fade - Slide - Convex - Concave - Zoom
Slide Backgrounds
Set data-background="#dddddd" on a slide to change the background color. All CSS color formats are supported.
Image Backgrounds
Tiled backgrounds, video backgrounds, ... and gifs, background transitions.
Different background transitions are available via the backgroundTransition option. This one's called "zoom".
You can override background transitions per-slide.
Iframe Backgrounds
Since reveal.js runs on the web, you can easily embed other web content. Try interacting with the page in the background.
Marvelous List
- No order here
Fantastic Ordered List
- One is smaller than...
- Two is smaller than...
Tabular Tables
Clever quotes.
These guys come in two forms, inline: The nice thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from and block:
“For years there has been a theory that millions of monkeys typing at random on millions of typewriters would reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. The Internet has proven this theory to be untrue.”
Intergalactic Interconnections
You can link between slides internally, like this .
Speaker View
There's a speaker view . It includes a timer, preview of the upcoming slide as well as your speaker notes.
Press the S key to try it out.
Export to PDF
Presentations can be exported to PDF , here's an example:
Global State
Set data-state="something" on a slide and "something" will be added as a class to the document element when the slide is open. This lets you apply broader style changes, like switching the page background.
State Events
Additionally custom events can be triggered on a per slide basis by binding to the data-state name.
Take a Moment
Press B or . on your keyboard to pause the presentation. This is helpful when you're on stage and want to take distracting slides off the screen.
- Right-to-left support
- Extensive JavaScript API
- Auto-progression
- Parallax backgrounds
- Custom keyboard bindings

- How to reduce anxiety
- Resources (books and video courses)
- How to reference your presentation
Introduction
- A reader chooses when and where to focus attention; a speaker must focus a listener’s attention on what he or she is saying at this moment.
- A reader controls how fast he or she will move through a text; a speaker controls how fast listeners will move through an oral presentation.
- Readers have the option of going back and re-reading; listeners must grasp material as the speaker presents it.
- Readers have many graphic cues about order and importance of points and about the relationship among ideas; listeners rely on the speaker to be their guide and interpreter.

Appeal to emotion
- Tell a story. Audiences respond better and be more convinced with stories that data.
- Use examples and anecdotes.
- Use surprises. This could be using a video when the audience thinks they are only getting slides.
What do you need to say?
The information for your presentation usually comes from a paper, case study, analysis, essay, or report. Choose only the key points from your paper. Go back to the question you were asked when you originally wrote your paper.
Design is key
Your presentation needs an introduction, body, and conclusion. Plan what your presentation will look like before you begin. Use only the important points from your paper to plan for sections of your presentation. These points then become the focus.
For each major section of your presentation, follow the 4 S Structure :
- Signpost the point (“First I’m going to point out the problem with...” “My second argument is that...” “It can be concluded that...”)
- State the point clearly and succinctly.
- Support the point with data, cases, description, relevant studies, etc.
- Summarize the point.
It is from these that you then design your slides and choose corresponding images and text.
10/20/30 rule
This rule states that a Power Point presentation should have no more than 10 slides, be 20 minutes long, and use no less than 30-point font.
This rule will keep the presentation on track so that you keep to time, as well as having a presentation that moves at a good pace and that is readable.
Do you need it?
- Use PowerPoint only if it will enhance audience attention, understanding, or retention.
- Be selective about what you put on slides. Don’t put the entire presentation on slides.
- Use visual and audio effects only if they serve your purpose and do not call attention to themselves. Make the technology serve the presentation. Don’t let it dominate.
- These are tools to help you tell your story. Don’t let the tools become the story.
Never read your presentation word for word. A good presentation is one where the presenter makes eye contact with his or her audience over the entire presentation. This means not reading your paper - your eyes are down, you lose your audience.
To help with this, make good notes, use cue cards, or put all notes on one sheet of paper. You can then glance at your notes for prompts. Better yet, learn and understand the material for your presentation, practice, and then use the images and text in your visual presentation as cues.
Tone and pacing
Avoid becoming monotone. Use variations in speed, inflections, and force to enhance your meaning and hold audience attention. Practice pronouncing words with which you are unfamiliar.
Some further points
Often times, a presenter does not notice their voice and body habits, which can be distracting when presenting. Remember, presenting is visual and oral story telling. With this in mind, understanding how a presentation looks and sounds is important. Keep these elements in mind:
Voice - “um,” “uh,” “okay”; everything sounding like a question (raising voice at the end of sentences); nervous laugh at the end of sentences; clearing the throat a lot, reading too quickly.
Body language - flipping hair back, playing with pen/pointer etc., rolling and unrolling notes, pushing sleeves up and down, playing with keys or coins in pockets, stepping back and forth/tapping foot, rocking body, touching face/adjusting glasses, turning rings on hand, waving hands around, tugging at shirt.
Visual aids - flipping overheads/slides too fast, talking to the screen.
Before you start!
Before you start working on your presentation:
- Check emails from your lecturer and the assignment question for how it should be presented,
- Check your learning materials and recommended reading on the course page,
- Read all instructions carefully - make sure you understand them and follow them exactly.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when creating an effective PowerPoint presentation:
- Remember to avoid too much text. You should keep your text brief and include talking points only. Detailed notes can be inserted into the notes section of PowerPoint, but only you should see those notes, unless a professor asks to see your notes to evaluate your PowerPoint as an assignment.
- Be consistent and clear with your font choices. Helvetica is a nice font for presentations. Make sure your font is large enough that an audience in a room would be able to see your text, even if audience members are sitting in the back of the room.
- Be careful with your color choices for text and background. You want to make sure your audience can read your text easily. Black on white text is easiest to read but is also boring for a presentation. Still, when you add color, just be sure you are adding color that works and doesn’t distract.
- Add images. Text on slides for every slide is boring. Add appropriate images to your slides. Relevant charts and graphs are excellent, as are pictures that will connect to your content.
- Make sure your main points are clear. Remember to connect your ideas well and provide background information and transitions when necessary.
- Keep your audience in mind. Your audience will affect the overall tone and appearance of your presentation. Sometimes, humor can be appropriate. Other times, a more serious tone may be necessary. Just as you evaluate your situation any time you write a paper, you should evaluate your situation for creating a PowerPoint presentation.

Can I create a Slide Library in PowerPoint?
- December 14, 2020
Looking for a great way to reuse your favorite PowerPoint slides and objects? Perhaps you’re looking for a SharePoint Slide Library replacement? PPT Productivity add-in has a Slide Library for PowerPoint feature which lets you easily save and reuse slides, shapes. You can use the Slide Library to save slides, frameworks, diagrams, pictures, image files, logos and much more.
If your company uses SharePoint Server, you may have previously used Microsoft’s PowerPoint Slide Library feature. This feature made it easier to save and reuse specific PowerPoint Slides, but Microsoft decommissioned the feature in the release of SharePoint 2016.
The PPT Productivity Slide Library for PowerPoint lets you have Personal and Team Libraries of slides, icons, images and other objects that can be easily reused in your PowerPoint presentations.
You can also use it to share slides and objects with colleagues. You can also boost your library with 2000+ downloadable standard slides and shapes from PPTProductivity.com (included with your license). We think it’s a great SharePoint slide library replacement.
How does PPT Productivity Slide Library work?
Think of the Slide Library Toolbar as the access point – a searchable toolbar displaying thumbnail images which appears in PowerPoint to the right of your screen. The Slide Library Toolbar displays all of the objects from library folders you have created or downloaded. Libraries can be:
- Personal – you can create one or more library folders of your favorite slides, frameworks and other objects and search across them all from the Slide Library Toolbar (a library folder is simply a grouping mechanism to provide more search options).
- Team – Team Slide Library files are saved on your company’s internal share drive (e.g. OneDrive, Dropbox) enabling all team members with access to the drive to sync to a common PowerPoint Team Slide Library (which is hosted within your organizations existing document storage solution). Team members can also synch to download the Team Library so they can work remotely at the client site or when travelling.
- PPT Productivity Downloadable - PPT Productivity offers 40 libraries with 2000+ objects (including: icons, flags, maps, agenda layouts, table layouts, chevron diagrams, organizational chart templates, common consulting frameworks and more)
- Individual users and Teams can have one or many library folders . That's right! Perhaps you're in the design team working with multiple business units. You could have separate PowerPoint Slide Libraries for each team and other separate ones for your own most commonly used shapes and slides.
- Slides and editable objects inserted into your presentations are as editable as the original version that you saved. There is a checkbox option to ‘use source formatting’. If this checkbox is deselected, the pasted slides or objects inherit the destination file’s properties.
Can I share a slide library in PowerPoint?
PPT Productivity includes a Team Slide Library feature which is perfect for Teams. Setting up your team with access to a Team Slide Library (previously called the Corporate Gallery) means all team members can access a set of common slides and objects from within PowerPoint. Providing the Team Slide Library with a set of standard slides, icons and elements to all team members makes it easy for them to quickly create brand aligned and consistent presentations.
Importantly - when you create a Team library it is stored in your organizations IT stack (you host the files on your company's share drive). Your organization retains full control of the security of your company intellectual property. PPT Productivity does not save Team Library / Corporate Gallery on any central hosting or in our systems.
Can I have multiple Slide Libraries in PowerPoint?
Yes - users of the PPT Productivity Slide Library can have one or many different slide libraries for use within individual teams, business units or throughout the whole organization. For example, consulting and graphic design firms may prefer to create a separate Slide Library for each client.
In short, PPT Productivity's SharePoint slide libraries alternative enables you to:
- Save and name each slide, shape, framework, image, logo you want to re-use to the Slide Library all from within PowerPoint.
- Access and re-use saved slides/ shapes easily as it displays within PowerPoint as a toolbar at the right-hand side of your PowerPoint screen

How does this feature compare with Standard PowerPoint Reuse and Collaborate features?
Standard PowerPoint doesn’t have a Slide Library feature. PowerPoint has Reuse and Collaboration features, but they do not lets you create a library or shortlist of best slides and objects.
- Microsoft’s PowerPoint Reuse feature enables users to copy a specific PowerPoint slide from a previous presentation into the pack you are working on. But the Reuse feature doesnt let you name slides from your previous work and add them to a library along with elements from slides.
- Microsoft’s PowerPoint Collaboration feature enables multiple users to edit a PowerPoint slide and shows comments and iterations of changes made. But neither of these features allows you to save specific slides for use in future presentations.
PPT Productivity offers free personalized demonstrations if you would like to see the Slide Library (and the many other features) in action and free 30 day trials (no credit card details required).
So if you’re looking for a SharePoint slide library replacement or just a great way to save and reuse PowerPoint slides and other objects, PPT Productivity’s Slide Library is a great option for you

How to Choose the Right Presentation Website for Your Needs
While looking for the right websites to make presentations, here are some crucial factors for you to consider:
- Assess your presentation needs
First things first — determine your presentation needs. What does your presentation want to accomplish? Determine whether you require a formal corporate presentation, a presentation for an educational setting, a portfolio of your artistic work, or any other particular presentation style.
- Look into the features the website offers
Next, evaluate available features. Look for websites that offer customizable templates, multimedia support, collaboration features, integration with other tools, and data visualization capabilities. Research different presentation websites and compare what they offer to find the right fit for your requirements.
- Ensure the website is user-friendly
Don’t forget to consider ease of use! The website should provide a user-friendly interface and intuitive design tools. Time-saving features like drag-and-drop capabilities, pre-made layouts, and various formatting options can make your presentation look professional while saving you time.
- Check for multimedia support
Examine your alternatives when it comes to choosing a template and multimedia support. Ensure your chosen themes and templates are appropriate for your desired look and feel. Additionally, confirm that the presentation website can display multimedia components, including interactive media, audio, video, and photos. These can improve your presentation and keep your audience interested.
- Ensure the platform allows collaboration
Collaboration and sharing options offer another critical consideration. If you plan on working with others on your presentation, look for platforms offering real-time collaboration or other features that make sharing and feedback easy.
- Check for mobile optimization and device compatibility
One more thing to remember — with the increasing use of mobile devices, ensure that the presentation website is optimized for mobile viewing. It should provide responsive design and compatibility across various devices and screen sizes.
- Review the privacy and security policy
Finally, review the privacy and security measures provided by the presentation website. Remember to consider cost when evaluating your options.
