The Best Windows XP Software That Still Works

Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP, but plenty of programs still do. We show you supported browsers, office, and antivirus software for Windows XP.

Microsoft dropped support for Windows XP in 2014, and major software followed suit in the years after. If you're one of the few people still using Windows XP, not only does your operating system no longer receive security updates, but most software don't work on it either.

In case you really need to use Windows XP for some reason, let's take a look at some major categories and see which software still works on the archaic Windows XP. Just keep in mind that we do not recommend using Windows XP unless absolutely necessary.

Note: Some of these apps are offered in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors. In all likelihood, your copy of Windows XP is 32-bit. Thus, you should make sure to avoid any 64-bit downloads on these sites.

Windows XP Browsers

Let's start with one of the most important categories: browsers. We've written an entire piece on the most secure browser to use with Windows XP , so we'll summarize here.

Internet Explorer and Google Chrome have both dropped support for Windows XP, so you should avoid them. Firefox does not support Windows XP anymore, even in its extended support release version. Opera does not offer updates for Windows XP either---the latest version for XP is 36, while on Windows 10 Opera is up to version 70.

The only notable browser that offers its latest version for Windows XP is Maxthon. At the time of writing, Maxthon 5.3.8 is available on both Windows XP and Windows 10. While this doesn't make using Windows XP much safer, it's better than using a browser that hasn't seen updates for years.

Office Suites for Windows XP

Next to browsers, an office suite is probably one of the most important programs you use.

If you want to stick with Microsoft Office, you can't use any modern version on Windows XP. Office 2013 and 2016 only work on Windows 7 and newer, while Office 2019 and Microsoft 365 only work on Windows 10.

The latest Microsoft Office version that works with Windows XP is the 32-bit edition of Office 2010. Support for Office 2010 ends on October 13, 2020, meaning that all Windows XP versions of Office are unsupported after that date.

Office 2007 and earlier are compatible with Windows XP, but Microsoft no longer supports them so we recommend you avoid those.

Microsoft allows you to download Office 2010 if you have a valid product key . If you don't have one, you could purchase an Office license online, but we recommend you put that money towards a computer replacement instead.

LibreOffice, the best free alternative to Microsoft Office, doesn't support Windows XP on its latest versions anymore. You can download archived versions, but those have the same problems as running an outdated copy of Office.

As an alternative, in a supported browser like Maxthon, you can give Office Online a try or use Google Docs for a basic office suite in your browser.

Antivirus for Windows XP

Microsoft's official antivirus, now integrated into Windows 10 as Windows Defender, was known as Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows XP. Unsurprisingly, the company no longer supports it, so you'll have to install a third-party solution instead.

One of the options that still works with Windows XP is Panda Antivirus. It's a cloud antivirus, which means the company's servers do most of the heavy lifting instead of your PC.

If you don't like Panda, you can also try Avast Free Antivirus, which still offers a version for Windows XP. Avast doesn't offer its newest features in the XP version, but still updates the antivirus definitions.

As a supplement, you should also download Malwarebytes. As of January 2020, Malwarebytes has confirmed continued support for Windows XP. Like Avast, it won't get new features, but receives updated anti-malware definitions.

This features an on-demand scanner to complement the real-time scanning of a dedicated antivirus. Malwarebytes recommends that you avoid outdated operating systems, but it's a good backup option for as long as you're on XP.

Windows XP Backup Software

Nowadays Windows includes solid backup options built-in, but Windows XP's backup solution is pretty bare. You can still use it by visiting Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup . If it's not good enough for you (which is likely), an alternative will better protect your data.

One of the best backup tools for beginners is AOMEI Backupper Standard, which still works on Windows XP. It's free and backs up only to external drives, not cloud locations.

The all-around performer EaseUS Todo Backup Free also works fine on XP. Unfortunately, cloud backup services like Backblaze don't support Windows XP any longer.

Miscellaneous Windows XP Apps

Let's briefly take a look at several other categories of apps that still work on Windows XP.

Audio and Video

For local media, nothing beats VLC Media Player---it plays every kind of audio and video imaginable, and still works on Windows XP.

If you prefer to stream music, Spotify has dropped support for Windows XP, but you can still use the Web Player.

Most other streaming services, like Pandora, have a web player that should work in a supported XP browser like Maxthon.

Image Editing

One of the best easy-to-use editors, Paint.NET, no longer supports Windows XP. The latest versions of GIMP, another popular image editor that's open source, don't work on Windows XP either.

Instead of downloading an older version of GIMP, you can try a browser-based solution like Sumo Paint.

While you're at it, you should install the excellent image viewer IrfanView. It's much better than Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and offers tons of extra features. And it works on Windows XP, surprisingly.

Cloud Storage

Dropbox, perhaps the biggest cloud storage platform, does not work at all on Windows XP. Microsoft's own OneDrive service also no longer works on XP. Unfortunately, Google Drive's desktop app (now named Backup and Sync) is a no-go too.

Thus, to interact with your cloud storage, you'll need to sign into the web portals and use them in your browser. It's not ideal, but at least you can still access your files.

Two of the best file compression and extraction programs , PeaZip and 7-Zip, are still going strong on Windows XP. PeaZip is more aesthetically pleasing, while 7-Zip is a Windows classic.

Adobe Reader only offers version 11 (not the newest Acrobat Reader DC) for Windows XP. This is doable, but most browsers can open PDFs now too, so it's not a big worry.

Windows XP doesn't have the built-in Snipping Tool to take screenshots, so you can install another screenshot tool to take screenshots instead. PicPick still works on Windows XP.

Few Windows XP Software Still Stand

As we mentioned throughout this list, the majority of popular software doesn't work on Windows XP anymore. If you're still running XP, we highly recommend that you migrate to a supported operating system as soon as possible.

These programs could drop support for XP at any time, and using an unsupported OS still isn't safe, even with compatible software.

One downside to this program is that the print preview feature isn't like most programs in that you have to open the preview as an image in a photo viewer, which isn't supplied with AbiWord.

Jarte can be configured to automatically open the last file you were using upon launching the program, which is a nice option that most of the other software from this list doesn't allow.

Unfortunately, the spell check feature isn't automatic, and the program itself is sometimes confusing to grasp.

WriteMonkey

WriteMonkey is a portable word processor that's centered around providing an interface with the least number of distractions as possible so that you can focus on writing and nothing else.

Every menu option in WriteMonkey is only shown if you right-click the document. From there, you can do everything from open a new document or project to toggle focus mode, copy all the text, open dev tools, and more.

WriteMonkey is a free word processor for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

It's simple to open and edit files from your computer because of the file browser that's open on the side of the program window. New documents appear in their own tab so that you can keep up to 100 files open in RoughDraft at the same time.

One of the downsides to this word processor is that the last version came out in 2005 and the developer is no longer working on it, so it won't get new features in the future. Also, while the DOC file format is supported, the file has to have been created in Word 2010 or older.

FocusWriter

Provides multiple ways to create a distraction-free interface.

Colors and layouts can be customized.

Goals can be created to stay on task.

There's a portable option.

Can't open documents with rich text formatting.

FocusWriter is similar to WriteMonkey in that it's portable and has a minimal interface. The program automatically hides the menus and any buttons from being viewed, and you can run it in full-screen mode so that you don't see any other program windows.

Basic formatting is allowed in FocusWriter, like bold, strikethrough, and aligning text. You can also edit the foreground and background text, page margins, color, and line spacing to produce custom themes.

You can open and save documents to popular formats like DOCX, ODT, RTF, and TXT. However, documents with rich text formatting might import into FocusWriter in plain text and become completely unusable.

FocusWriter includes an alarm and lets you set goals regarding your typing, like to type a particular number of words or to type for a certain number of minutes per day.

Another advantage this program has over some of the other free word processors in this list is that it gets updated far more often, so you can be sure that new features and/or security updates are released as frequently as they need to be.

The free AEdit word processor works with files in Microsoft's popular DOC format but not their newer DOCX format. You can also open 123, BAT , ECO, HTML, RTF, TXT, and XLS files.

However, when you save a document with AEdit, your options are limited to ECO, RTF, TXT, and BAT.

AEdit is for Windows computers.

StoryBox requires the Microsoft .Net 4.0 Framework to run. You can download this from Windows Update if you do not have them already. On Windows 7, when I tried to run StoryBox without 4.0 installed, it notified me and provided a link to download the updated .Net. I do not know if this will happen on Windows XP or Windows Vista.

On Windows XP, .Net 4.0 requires that you have service pack 3 installed.

If you hate this, let me know and I'll make it an option, but it should save you from having to turn off auto format where you have items you want centered, since you won't have to worry about the indent.

• ePub export now centers properly in Nook reader (and, presumably, other readers based on the same software)
• Adjustments made to [br] - it no longer gives double tags on some readers.
• No longer cuts Kindle prepared indents in half (this was originally cut in half for older generation kindles that appeared to double the size of the indents and has been fixed in recent generations/updates)
• No longer adds an extra linebreak after a scene separator for Kindle prepared exports
• Selecting mobi format in the export no longer shows the Prepare for Kindle option, as modifying that option has no effect on mobi export
• [br] tag now gives a proper line break on tested readers (kobo, kindle, nook, iBooks)

This means you can use regular documents as folders, and they won't show up in the Add To... lists
• Fixed display names in the Add/Remove buttons of the toolbar for the Align Left, Align Center, Align Right, and Bug report buttons
• Added keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+L to make selected text lowercase. Ctrl+Shift+U makes selected text uppercase
• Added [ri][/ri] tags so that you can set raised initial caps for ebook exports. They will not affect RTF export.
• Added Ctrl+Shift+R shortcut to apply [ri][/ri] tags around the selected text
• StoryBox no longer deletes mobi files that get created by KindleGen when there are errors in the KindleGen process.
• StoryBox will now detect if Calibre is installed, and if it is, will give you the option of using Calibre to convert to .mobi format (it currently uses default options)
• You no longer need spaces around the [chapter] tag for the import to separate the chapters correctly

yeah you can run QBASIC in a cmd prompt. Download it. Then just open the file with the program in it and press F5 to run or choose Run from the menu. i've downloaded QBASIC 4.5 before, for windows xp.

How to make old programs work on windows 10.

Most of your older Windows apps should just work on Windows 10.

Quick Links

Run as administrator, adjust compatibility settings, install unsigned drivers or 32-bit drivers, run games that require safedisc and securom drm, use virtual machines for older software, use emulators for dos and windows 3.1 applications, use 32-bit windows for 16-bit software, use specific browsers for websites requiring java, silverlight, activex, or internet explorer.

Most of your older Windows apps should just work on Windows 10 . If they worked on Windows 7, they'll almost certainly work on Windows 10. Some older PC applications won't just work, but there are many ways to get them working again.

These tricks cover a variety of applications, from Windows XP-era apps and old PC games that require outdated DRM to DOS  and Windows 3.1 applications.

Many applications developed for Windows XP will work properly on a modern version of Windows, except for one little issue. During the Windows XP era, average Windows users typically used their PC with an Administrator account all the time. Applications were coded to just assume they had administrative access and would fail if they didn't. The new User Account Control (UAC) feature mostly fixed this issue , but there were some teething problems at first.

If an older application isn't working properly, try right-clicking its shortcut or .exe file, and then selecting "Run as Administrator" to launch it with administrative permissions.

If you find that an app does require administrative access, you can set the app to always run as administrator using the compatibility settings we discuss in the next section.

Windows includes compatibility settings that can make old applications functional.  In Windows 10's Start menu, right-click a shortcut, select "Open file location" from the context menu

Once you have the file's location, right-click the app's shortcut or .exe file, and then select "Properties" from the context menu.

On the "Compatibility" tab of the app's properties window, you can click the "Use the compatibility troubleshooter" button for a wizard interface or just adjust the options yourself.

For example, if an application doesn't run properly on Windows 10 but did run properly on Windows XP, select the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" option, and then select "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" from the dropdown menu.

Don't be shy about trying the other settings on the "Compatibility" tab, too. For example, very old games may benefit from "Reduced color mode". On high DPI displays , you may have to check the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" to make a program look normal. No options on this tab can hurt your app or PC---you can always just turn them back off if they don't help.

The 64-bit version of Windows 10 uses driver signature enforcement and requires all drivers have a valid signature before they can be installed. 32-bit versions of Windows 10 normally don't require signed drivers. The exception to this is that 32-bit versions of Windows 10 running on a newer PC with UEFI (instead of regular BIOS) often do require signed drivers. Enforcing signed drivers helps improve security and stability, protecting your system from drivers that are malicious or simply unstable. You should only install unsigned drivers if you know they're safe and have a good reason to do so.

If old software you want to install does need unsigned drivers, you'll have to use a special boot option to install them . If only 32-bit drivers are available, you'll have to use the 32-bit version of Windows 10 instead---the 64-bit version of Windows 10 requires 64-bit drivers. Use this process if you need to switch to the 32-bit version , downloading the 32-bit version of Windows 10 instead of the 64-bit version.

Windows 10 won't run older games that use SafeDisc or SecuROM DRM. These digital rights management schemes can cause quite a few problems. Overall, it's a good thing that Windows 10 doesn't allow this junk to install and pollute your system. Unfortunately, it does mean that some older games that came on physical CDs or DVDs won't install and run normally.

You have a variety of other options for playing these games, including searching for a "no CD" crack (which are potentially very unsafe, as they're often found on shady piracy sites), repurchasing the game from a digital distribution service like GOG or Steam, or checking the developer's website to see if it offers a patch that removes the DRM.

More advanced tricks include installing and dual-booting into an older version of Windows without this restriction, or attempting to run the game in a virtual machine with an older version of Windows. A virtual machine may even work well for you, since games using these DRM schemes old enough now that even a virtual machine can likely handle their graphics demands.

Windows 7 included a special "Windows XP Mode" feature. This was actually just an included virtual machine program with a free Windows XP license. Windows 10 does not include a Windows XP mode, but you can still use a virtual machine to do it yourself.

All you really need is a virtual machine program like VirtualBox and a spare Windows XP license. Install that copy of Windows in the VM and you can run software on that older version of Windows in a window on your Windows 10 desktop.

Using a virtual machine is a somewhat more involved solution, but it will work well unless the app needs to interface with hardware directly. Virtual machines tend to have limited support for hardware peripherals.

DOSBox allows you to run old DOS applications ---primarily DOS games---in an emulator window on your desktop. Use DOSBox to run old DOS applications rather than relying on the Command Prompt. DOSBox will work much, much better.

And, since Windows 3.1 itself was basically a DOS application, you can install Windows 3.1 in DOSBox and run old 16-bit Windows 3.1 applications, too.

16-bit programs no longer function on 64-bit versions of Windows. The 64-bit version of Windows just doesn't contain the WOW16 compatibility layer that allows 16-bit apps to run. Try to run a 16-bit application on a 64-bit version of Windows and you'll just see a "This app can't run on your PC" message.

If you do need to run 16-bit apps, you'll need to install the 32-bit version of Windows 10 instead of the 64-bit version. The good news is that you don't really have to reinstall your entire operating system. Instead, you can just install a 32-bit version of Windows inside a virtual machine and run the application there. You could even install Windows 3.1 in DOSBox.

Windows 10 uses the new  Microsoft Edge as its default browser. Edge doesn't include support for Java, ActiveX, Silverlight, and other technologies. Chrome has also dropped support for NPAPI plug-ins like Java and Silverlight.

To use older web applications requiring these technologies , fire up the Internet Explorer web browser included with Windows 10 for compatibility reasons. IE still supports ActiveX content. Mozilla Firefox still supports Java and Silverlight.

You can launch Internet Explorer from the Start menu. If you're already Microsoft Edge, just open the settings menu and select "Open with Internet Explorer" to open the current web page directly in Internet Explorer.

In general, if an older application doesn't function on Windows 10, it's a good idea to try to find a modern replacement that will work properly. But, there are some apps---especially old PC games and business apps---that you just may not be able to replace. Hopefully, some of the compatibility tricks we've shared will get those apps up and running again.

Install a CD/DVD writer for Windows XP

To provide an appropriate resolution, I would need more information from your end.

1.       Do you have Service Pack 3 update installed in the Windows XP computer?

2.       Which security software is installed in the computer?

3.       What is the make and model of the dvd RW drive?

The laptop where the ROM drive burns has the same version of Windows XP and does have SP3 installed with ESET Security Software with a MATSHITA UJDA7555yDVD/CDRW ROM drive

The laptop that will not burn is again Windows XP SP3 with Microsoft Security Essentials and a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T2ON ROM drive.

Again, even with a new Panasonic USB external DVD-RW attached to either laptop the Microsoft Fix it showed they both were not capable of writing. The MATSHITA ROM drive will now write to both its internal and external ROM drives but only after installing a bunch of burning programs; the Microsoft Fix it still shows them as incapable of burning.

Can this be fixed?

You may refer to this article and check if you are able to burn using Windows Media Player. You can use Windows Media Player 11 to burn an audio CD containing any mix of songs you want from your library.
