Little Green by Joni Mitchell

a little green

Songfacts®:

  • Little Green is about the child that Joni Mitchell gave up for adoption in 1965: you sign all the papers in the family name you are sad and you're sorry but you're not ashamed little green have a happy ending Mitchell gave birth to the child, who she named Kelly Dale, six months earlier, traveling from Saskatchewan to Toronto to so and keeping it secret from her parents. The father was out of the picture, but she tried to keep the child and establish a family by marrying a singer named Chuck Mitchell, but it didn't work out. She explained in a 1998 interview with Toronto Globe and Mail : "I was dirt poor. An unhappy mother does not raise a happy child. It was difficult parting with the child, but I had to let her go." Joni and her daughter were reunited in 1997, but it did not have a happy ending - they broke off contact a few years later. >> Suggestion credit : Todd - Atlanta, GA
  • Mitchell's daughter Kelly Dale Anderson was born February 19, 1965. Mitchell chose the name Kelly after the color kelly green, which represented spring - thus the song's title. Kelly's adoptive parents David and Ida Gibb renamed her Kilauren. >> Suggestion credit : Annabelle - Eugene, OR

  • Michael from Brooklyn, Ny I hate to bring this up, but if Joni Mitchell's child was born on February 19, 1965, she was not born with the moon in Cancer. She was born with the moon in Libra. Check any ephemeris. However, in the 60s there was a lot of quasi-astrology going on, and they didn't have as much access to data, so I suppose someone might have given Joni the wrong info. I doubt she will now change the opening of this song to "Born with the Moon in Libra," for no other reason than it would be hard to rhyme.
  • Blake from Stevensville, Md I thought that was Chelsea Morning?

Joni Mitchell - Little Green

How Hidden Meaning Works: Joni Mitchell’s “Little Green”

A song where the meaning of the lyric isn’t immediately clear excites us. We’re usually intrigued by the fact that the words are so simple, the phrases and sentences so seemingly unambiguous, and yet… what does it all mean?

We can usually tell when a songwriter is pouring out their soul to us, even if they don’t want it to be blazingly clear what they’re singing about. Perhaps we feel respect that the writer has chosen to keep a bit of themselves in reserve. So they don’t reveal everything.

1_ess_15_banner_sm

But it’s actually not that they don’t reveal everything. It’s more that they reserve the magic key that unlocks everything. Without that key, you only get a smattering of moods and feelings. Those moods usually give us enough that we enjoy the song, and we’re OK with not knowing everything.

Once we’re given that magic key — the “meaning” — it all makes complete (or almost complete) sense.

Joni Mitchell’s “Little Green” ( see the complete lyric here ) is a perfect example of a song where the writer has reserved the magic key so that we only get the feelings, and only snippets and ideas of what/who the song’s really about:

Born with the moon in Cancer Choose her a name she will answer to Call her green and the winters cannot fade her Call her green for the children who’ve made her Little green, be a gypsy dancer He went to California Hearing that everything’s warmer there So you write him a letter and say “Her eyes are blue” He sends you a poem and she’s lost to you Little green he’s a non-conformer… -Joni Mitchell, “Little Green” – © 1967 Siquomb Music (BMI)

We know now, because of more recent revelations , that “Little Green” is the daughter that Joni gave up for adoption in the mid-60s. With that knowledge, we listen again to the song, and suddenly the scene is more clearly illuminated: we understand. We felt the story before, and now we know .

What’s wonderful is that though we’ve loved and been patient with not knowing everything, we love it all the more now that we know more. We still feel the love, pain, joy and sorrow of each line.

These kinds of songs are hard to write in committee. You can’t imagine seven people in a room coming up with this. These are the kinds of songs that need one writer, and possibly two if you’ve got a songwriting collaborator that truly understands you.

To write songs like “Little Green”, where the meaning is hidden or at least partially obscured, you can’t follow a list of rules. You  can , however, try the following, once you know what you want your song to be about:

  • At the top of a page, write, “Tell me more about __________.” Fill in that blank. Then underneath that heading, write words, phrases and sentences that begin to relate your song’s story or issue.
  • As your lyric fills in, and you feel that each verse points in a new direction, write a new heading that says, “Tell me more about________.” Each verse can have it’s own autonomy in this way.
  • Remember that disembodied emotions that have no story are hard for audiences to relate to. So you’ll need to give enough in your lyric that people get an inkling about your song’s subject.
  • Keep something in reserve for yourself. Don’t feel that you must divulge  everything to your audience.
  • Each line of lyric needs to logically follow. Completely disconnected thoughts can sound purposely confusing. The point of hidden meaning is not to confuse people, but simply to offer the freedom — the permission, you might say — to listeners to understand the song in their own way. Read each line in “Little Green”, and you’ll see that it works when you say, “Because she said  this , she then said  that.” )

The purpose of hidden or obscured meaning, therefore, is not to arrogantly taunt the listener, but rather to offer an opportunity for individual listeners to fill in the pieces with bits from their own past, to have a truly unique musical experience.

Done well, hidden meaning makes audiences savour your words, and want to taste them again and again. They stimulate the innermost reaches of their minds, and that’s always a good thing.

Gary Ewer

The song talked about here, “Little Green” was used in an episode of “Without A Trace”, Season 3, Episode 11, “4.0”. I was sure Joni Mitchell had to be the singer, but the credits didn’t list the music. However, there was something there, I had to know more. It took hours of chasing on the nets until I found this along with an article with the factual story. Not only does this explain what I felt, the song is a perfect fit for the episode. It could have been written for that episode. That it was written 38 years before boggles the mind. It is well worth watching, it actually illuminates Joni’s song. It ought to be mentioned in a sidebar to this song somewhere. Thanks for your excellent explanation of how this song is put together.

Thanks for sharing that, Karen. It’s such a powerful song, isn’t it? -G

I like to reserve specific info in my lyrics so the listener can fill in the blanks with their own experiences. I believe that is what you are saying. I express the emotions in ways that they can’t, so the listener relates to the song through the emotions. Many of my songs are about after having dealt with difficulties in the past, trying to grasp onto hope and motivation to move forward in life.

Yes, that’s a very good way of putting it: expressing emotions in ways that the listener can’t. Thanks so much for commenting on this.

Why Is My Pee Green?

  • Possible Causes
  • When to Call a Provider

If you look into the toilet and see green pee, you might understandably be concerned. More often than not, the issue is harmless and caused by something you drank or ate that had green or blue food dye in it. This includes certain medications.

However, in rare cases, green-colored urine can be a sign of something more serious, like a urinary tract infection or liver disease.

This article offers several reasons why your pee is green and describes the signs and symptoms that warrant a visit to your healthcare provider.

Possible Causes of Green Pee

In most cases, green pee is not a cause for concern. While urine is usually a light yellow color, certain substances can filter through the kidneys and cause your pee to turn green—but usually for only a short period.

The problem is really only significant when the change in color is persistent or accompanied by other unusual signs and symptoms.

Food and Food Dyes

While uncommon, green vegetables—particularly dark, leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale—can give pee a greenish tinge if eaten in large amounts. This is due to chlorophyll , the organic compound that makes plants green.

However, a more likely culprit is artificial food dyes. This not only includes green dyes but also blue dyes that turn green when introduced into urine.

There are two artificial food dyes approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA):

  • Green no. 3 : Also known as triphenylmethane , this is found in puddings, desserts, ice cream, gelatin, cotton candy, candy, and sweetened drinks as well as canned peas, processed vegetables, and even certain processed fish.
  • Blue no. 2 : Also known as indigotine , this is found in breakfast cereals, beverages, ice cream, candy, and other foods,

Consuming significant amounts of these dyes can lead to greenish pee, usually within six hours. The discoloration generally clears by your next urination.

Medications

Certain medications contain Blue no. 2 dye, including capsules and coated tablets. These can also cause urine to turn green, especially if they are taken on an empty stomach during a prolonged period of fasting.

Medications that can cause green pee include:

  • Doxil (doxorubicin) : A chemotherapy drug used for breast cancer
  • Dyrenium (triamterene) : A diuretic used to treat high blood pressure
  • Elavil (amitriptyline) : An antidepressant
  • Indocin (indomethacin): An anti-inflammatory drug used for arthritis
  • Phenergan (promethazine): An antihistamine used for allergies and motion sickness
  • Rinsapin : An antibiotic used for staph infections
  • Tagamet (cimetidine) : An H2 blocker used for heartburn
  • Viagra (sildenafil): An erectile dysfunction drug
  • Vitamin B : Commonly found in multivitamins

Urinary Tract Infection

Green pee is an uncommon sign of urinary tract infection (UTI) . However, there is one type of bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa that can turn your urine green.

P. aeruginosa is a bacteria found in soil, water, and plants. It can cause different types of infection and is passed through contaminated hands, water, food, and medical equipment. People with a compromised immune system are at greatest risk.

If it affects the urinary tract, P. auruginosa can cause urine to turn green. This is because it produces a blue-green compound called pyocyanin that can infiltrate body fluids, including urine. If the skin is affected, it can even cause blue pus.

Other signs of a UTI include:

  • A strong, persistent urge to pee
  • Burning sensation when peeing
  • Peeing often
  • Passing small amounts of pee
  • Cloudy urine
  • Strong-smelling urine

Familial Benign Hypercalcemia

Familial benign hypercalcemia (FBH) is a genetic disorder in which the kidneys retain too much calcium . People with FBH usually do not have symptoms and are often diagnosed by chance during routine bloodwork.

When symptoms do appear, they may be in the form of greenish urine. This is because high calcium in the bloodstream increases the production of a naturally occurring blue compound called indican . As excess indican is passed through the kidneys, your urine can take on a blue-green hue.

In babies, the condition is sometimes referred to as "blue diaper syndrome" because of the abnormal urine color.

As per its name, FBH is a relatively benign condition but one that can cause weakness, fatigue, concentration problems, and excessive thirst in some people.

Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) is characterized by the accumulation of a yellowish compound called bilirubin . As the liver becomes less able to filter blood, bilirubin can start to build up in the bloodstream, causing your skin and eyes to turn yellow (a condition known as jaundice ).

As the excess bilirubin is excreted in pee, it can initially cause your urine to take on a greenish hue. As the hepatitis symptoms worsen, the color can change from green to a dark cola color.

Other symptoms of hepatitis include:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling of the upper-left abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pale-colored stools

Hepatitis is most often caused by a virus but can also be due to excessive alcohol use and certain medications. Liver failure can also lead to jaundice and abnormal urine colors.

When to Call a Healthcare Provider

See a healthcare provider if green pee persists for more than a day or is accompanied by:

  • Urinary symptoms, such as burning, pain, frequent urination, or difficulty urinating
  • Hepatitis symptoms, such as jaundice, extreme weakness, and pale stools
  • Any other abnormal symptoms

In most cases, green pee doesn’t need treatment and will go away on its own. However, if green pee is caused by a medical condition such as a UTI or hepatitis, you will need to treat the underlying condition.

UTIs are most often treated with a course of antibiotics .

Liver disease may require treatment by a liver specialist known as a hepatologist or a specialist in digestive diseases known as a gastroenterologist .

In most cases, green pee is nothing to worry about and is most often caused by green or blue dyes in food or medicines. However, it can also be a sign of a medical concern such as a Pseudomonas urinary tract infection, familial benign hypercalcemia, or liver disease.

If the green color doesn't away or you experience any other unusual symptoms, see a healthcare provider.

Our house has wood floors in the main living areas and kitchen, but there’s carpet everywhere else. As outdoor lovers with pets, a child, and virtually no entryway for wet paws and muddy shoes, we make a bit of a mess. Enter the Bissell Little Green , a portable carpet cleaner designed to suck up spills and scrub away stains before they set in.

But what about those stains that have become part of your home—the grubby arm of the couch, a mystery spot on the stairs, or the latest place your pup decided to gnaw on a treat? I put the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner to the test on the toughest stains in our house (and garage), as well as on a few surprise areas that popped up during testing. After several hours of tests on just as many surfaces, I know what the Little Green can handle and what is just beyond its reach. See what I liked, what I wish was different, and if I’ll keep using the Bissell Little Green.

What is the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner?

The Little Green is a carpet cleaner designed to be highly portable without sacrificing capacity or suction. The small machine uses a cleaning solution and the power of suction to loosen and remove dirt and suck up spills, including fresh messes or set-in stains. The Little Green is similar to a wet vac, but in addition to sucking up liquid, it also sprays it on.

Able to be used on upholstery and automobile interiors in addition to carpets and area rugs, the Little Green can clean virtually any soft fabric surface. It comes with a 3-inch tough-stain tool that has a set of scrubbers for spots, a trial-size stain-removing formula scented with Febreze that freshens as it cleans, a HydroRinse head to clean the machine’s hose, two water reservoirs (one clean, one dirty), and onboard cord and hose storage.

The Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner is small enough to store in a closet and is affordable at under $150 at most retailers. As a family-owned business, Bissell has been making cleaning products for almost 150 years. The company cares about its local community in Grand Rapids, Michigan; donates a part of every purchase to its pet foundation; and has sustainable development goals in line with those of the United Nations.

Bissell Little Green Review

How easy is it to set up the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner?

The Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner took me less than 5 minutes to assemble. My setup time included going to the garage for the necessary Phillips-head screwdriver, installing the machine’s hose clip and storage bracket, and filling the tank with warm water plus the included cleaning solution.

Noting that the instruction manual suggested warm water under 140 degrees Fahrenheit, I even fished out my food thermometer and waited for the water to reach 125 degrees. While waiting, I filled the clean-water tank to the marked “formula” line (about 4 ounces) with the cleaning solution and added water to its marked line. I screwed on the water tank’s cap, clicked on the 3-inch tough-stain tool, and the Little Green was ready to use.

The last part of setup was taking the Little Green out to my first project in the garage—a stain on the ceiling of our Subaru I’d noticed just the day before. Before we got a hitch rack, we’d sometimes stow a bike in the back of our Outback. If you’ve done this, you know it isn’t easy, and you probably have a few chain-oil marks in your car that could use removing as well.

A great feature of this carpet cleaner is that its cord is substantially long at 15 feet, but unfortunately, I instantly found a project the cord couldn’t reach. The Bissell has a 3-amp motor, so I plugged it into a regular-duty extension cord, took it to the back of the car, and got into position.

Is the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner easy to use?

Because my first test was tackling the stain on the interior of our car’s roof, I turned the Bissell on and pressed down the trigger at the end of the hose while I reclined underneath. Gravity caused water to mist onto my face as I sprayed, but the Little Green had no issue spraying upside down.

As instructed, I let the solution soak into the car’s upholstery for 3 minutes, scrubbed it, then pulled and pushed the suction tool against the fabric to remove the excess liquid. Chain oil isn’t easy to clean, especially once it’s had months to get comfortable in its position. To my surprise, I was able to significantly lighten the set-in stain, lessening the dark black streaks by about 50 percent, though I could not remove the stain completely.

I found the spray function on the Little Green not only effective but also comfortable to use. As with many carpet cleaners, the trigger is located on the hose beneath where the tool head attaches. This location makes the button easy and intuitive to press—just watch that you don’t accidentally press it when you’re trying to use suction only. I did this a couple of times while getting used to the machine and again when I was really putting my weight into pressing the suction against the upholstery.

Another user-friendly feature of the Bissell Little Green is that it comes with a HydroRinse self-cleaning hose tool. Instead of allowing dirt and gunk to hang out in the machine’s hose post-use, you simply click this little head onto the hose, pull the trigger, and hold it upright while it washes out the hose. Pro tip: Do this part over the sink, as the small holes at the end of the HydroRinse tool let a few drips of water come out. These holes are necessary for air intake, and with the machine’s long hose, it’s easy to do this over the sink.

I did struggle to remove my HydroRinse tool once I was done using it, however. There’s a button near the end of the hose that, when pressed, should release whichever head is attached. I pushed it over and over, even using the end of a pen to make sure I was getting it all the way down, and nothing happened. The button was down, but the tool was stuck, and I had to work a flat-head screwdriver around the hose head to separate the two pieces.

One thing that’s different about cleaning the Little Green versus some of Bissell’s other models is that the clear front cover of the scrubbing tool isn’t removable. Some scrubbers have a button that pops the cover off for easy cleaning, but that’s not the case on the Little Green. I didn’t want to store it with dog hair and dirt still in it, so I put the sprayer nozzle of our kitchen faucet inside the tool and blasted that gunk out. While I prefer being able to remove that part for cleaning, this method definitely works.

As for the onboard hose holder, when the hose and tool head are properly stored, the trigger of the Little Green is pressed down. This is not an issue when the machine is unplugged for storage, but make sure you remove the hose from storage before turning on the machine lest you get a face full of cleaning solution.

Bissell Little Green Review

Is the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner effective at cleaning up spills and removing stains?

Overall, the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner does exactly what it’s intended to do. Based on my tests, it’s particularly good at dirt stains as well as virtually any fresh stain. It may struggle to fully remove set-in stains that are oil- or acid-based, but honestly, those are pretty big asks for anything other than a heavy-duty machine.

Our daughter gets the occasional bloody nose, and while hydrogen peroxide is an effective DIY option for removing blood stains, getting the mix of liquids drawn up out of the carpet is a challenge. An aptly timed bloody nose gave me the chance to try a new method.

In mere minutes, I was able to spray the carpet’s stain and suck up the mess. I still had plenty of cleaning solution in the large 48-ounce tank, and I watched as the liquids were sucked up through the translucent face of the stain tool and shot into the machine’s separate dirty-water tank. The carpet was clean, just a little damp to the touch, and it smelled fresh.

Even while rushing into the house when my daughter called me, moving the Little Green from the garage to a bedroom couldn’t have been easier. Despite going through two doors and up a set of stairs, carrying the machine was effortless. It weighs under 10 pounds, and the only nuisance was trying not to trip on the 15-foot cord and 4-foot hose, which I didn’t bother to wind up before hurrying into the house. Normally, however, this wouldn’t be an issue, as the Bissell features onboard cord and hose storage that keeps every piece of the machine in place.

Just after I’d finished cleaning that mess, our cat gifted me with her partially digested breakfast next to my office chair. I grabbed most of it with a paper towel, then used the Little Green on the liquid and yellowy stain. The carpet was good as new!

Can the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner remove old, set-in stains?

I have to admit that I had some insurmountable challenges for the Little Green, testing it on set-in chain oil, a grubby couch arm, and mystery stains on our carpeted stairs. The results of these tests were mixed. In each instance, the stains were absolutely lighter, but the only ones that I could entirely remove were those on the stairs.

Like the chain-oil stain in my car, the couch-arm stain looks better—the couch certainly doesn’t look brand new, but the Little Green lifted a good bit of the stain without damaging the upholstery fibers or the couch’s color. I did two passes on the arm, learning a trick between my first and second attempts. When pressed down, the trigger sprays cleaning solution in a fan shape about 5 inches wide. This was too wide for the arm of the couch, and cleaning solution got on the wood floor next to the couch as well as on the neighboring couch cushion. On my second pass, I put the wand a little closer to the stain to narrow the spray and held my hand next to the tool head to block the mist from our floors.

The Little Green carpet cleaner’s 3-amp motor is pretty typical for a portable carpet cleaner. I found that power sufficient for sucking up liquid, dirt, and debris, but I’m curious whether another stain-removing solution would perform better on my problem spots. The Little Green comes with a trial-size bottle of its Spot & Stain with Febreze Freshness formula , but Bissell also makes quite a few other cleaning solutions, including some specifically for set-in stains.

Also, regarding the portable carpet cleaner’s power, you’ll notice that the suction is enough to remove most of the water and cleaning solution you spray, but it will not remove it all. Each surface I cleaned was left just a little damp to the touch, but they all dried quickly. When testing the Little Green on our living room rug, which has only a very thin rug pad between it and our wood floors, I was pleased to find there was no moisture on our floors despite my dispensing a fair amount of cleaning solution onto the rug. And though I put a fair amount of effort into scrubbing, the tough-stain tool didn’t cause any damage to the rug’s fibers when pulling out the rug’s coffee stain.

Bissell Little Green Review

Is the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner worth the money?

With most retailers charging under $150, the Little Green is an excellent value. It will undoubtedly save money in the long run by extending the life of a home’s rugs, carpet, and upholstery. If you’re like me, living in a clean space and driving a clean car also improves quality of life—preventing and removing stains gives my brain one less thing to fixate on and worry about.

The Little Green has no maintenance costs, but its use does require a carpet cleaning solution of some sort. As mentioned, Bissell makes a whole line of cleaners for use in its machines, and I’m eager to try some stronger options on my more stubborn stains. I’ll also be trying this DIY recipe , cut down by two-thirds to match the Little Green’s size, in my portable carpet cleaner.

Once you see what you can pull out of the surfaces you clean, the Little Green will become part of your trusted cleaning arsenal. I was so shocked by the opacity of the dirty water in the tank after my tests that I took the tank to the toilet for dumping; after you see the filth pulled out of some of the home’s surfaces, you’ll agree that there’s only one place it belongs.

Should you buy the Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner?

If you have kids, pets, or like to entertain, a machine like the Little Green carpet cleaner is absolutely worth it. Having owned another Bissell carpet cleaner in the past, I can’t say that this model is significantly better. But between that experience and this, I can’t imagine not having some type of portable carpet cleaner . Bissell’s commitment to cleaning, alongside its commitments to sustainability and national pet care, make its products hard to beat.

Our previous carpet cleaner was Bissell’s SpotClean ProHeat Pet, a model Bissell no longer makes. It may be odd to say a carpet cleaner has a place in your heart, but when our previous dog was dying of cancer and repeatedly getting sick on our carpet, that machine made a big difference in having her at home during her last few weeks.

Bissell has an entire line of portable carpet cleaners, so you can find the one that’s best for you. There are options in different sizes, those that come with additional attachments, and even ones that maintain the water at a specific temperature. Each is highly rated, so you’ll likely be happy with any model you choose.

I’ll definitely be using the Little Green on a regular basis. I have more spots to tackle and am eager to try Bissell’s other cleaning solutions. The machine is super portable, convenient to use and store, and it does a great job of pulling messes out of soft fabrics before stains can set in. For day-to-day upkeep and general spills and spots, the Little Green makes cleanup less of a mess.

Fatal meth overdose in Edinboro leads to neighbor's arrest on charges she supplied drugs

Edinboro borough police allege that 51-year-old woman supplied methamphetamine that ended with death of 45-year-old man at his apartment on green oaks drive about six weeks ago..

a little green

  • Overdose victim Rex Young-Dahle was in cardiac arrest when emergency workers, police arrived at his apartment in February, according to police
  • Erie County Coroner's Office ruled that Young-Dahle died of "combined drug toxicity primarily involving methamphetamine"
  • Arresting officer says probe immediately focused on Melinda K. Wolcott, a neighbor who was standing outside Young-Dahle's apartment

Edinboro Borough police did not have to go far as they investigated the source of the methamphetamine that caused the fatal overdose of a 45-year-old man in an apartment in late February.

Officers arrested the 51-year-old woman who lived next door.

She was standing outside when police arrived to probe the overdose. Police said in arrest records that she admitted to supplying the meth to the victim, her neighbor, Rex Young-Dahle.

The woman, Melinda K. Wolcott, has been charged with the first-degree felony of drug delivery that resulted in death and three other drug-related offenses.

Wolcott was arrested and arraigned on Friday. She is being held at the Erie County Prison on a $200,000 bond, according to court records.

Toxicology tests help spur charges in meth overdose

Young-Dahle overdosed inside his unit at an apartment complex at 104 Green Oaks Drive on Feb. 23, according to arrest records. Police waited on the results of toxicology tests before charging Wolcott.

The Erie County Coroner's Office cited the test results and ruled Young-Dahle's cause of death as "combined drug toxicity primarily involving methamphetamine," according to arrest records, which cite the report of Deputy Coroner John Maloney. He said he got the test results a few weeks ago.

The arrest records in Wolcott's case identify the victim by the last name of Young rather than Young-Dahle. Maloney said Young used the last name Young-Dahle because he was m a rried .

Wolcott's arrest in 2024 follows the charging of five people in Erie County in 2023 with drug delivery that resulted in death. One of the five was charged in federal court.

The number of defendants charged with drug delivery resulting in death has grown over the past decade as the abuse of fentanyl and other opioids has surged in Erie County. Wolcott's case is different than most of the fatal overdose prosecutions in that meth is the drug that police allege caused the death of Young-Dahle.

At the same time, police throughout northwestern Pennsylvania say meth remains prevalent, and in some places is still the dominant drug for dealers and users.

Police say defendant admitted to supplying 'little bit of meth'

Young-Dahle was in cardiac arrest from the overdose when police arrived at his apartment at 2:14 p.m. on Feb. 23, according to the affidavit of probable cause attached to the criminal complaint against Wolcott. Emergency workers performed CPR on him, according to the affidavit, and an ambulance took him to Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie. He died at 3:20 p.m. that day.

The investigating Edinboro Borough officer, Braden DeFranco, said he discovered through interviews at the scene that Wolcott was accused of supplying the meth that Young-Dahle ingested through his nose earlier that day, according to the affidavit.

Wolcott was outside Young-Dahle's apartment, according to the affidavit. DeFranco said in the affidavit that she admitted to him that she supplied "a little bit of meth" to Dahle-Young. DeFranco said he used that information to get a search warrant for Wolcott's apartment next door.

Inside in the apartment, DeFranco said in the affidavit, he found a pink rubber container that held 0.09 grams of meth, a glass smoking device with meth residue and a digital scale with meth residue.

Wolcott is also charged with the felony of possession with intent to deliver meth and the misdemeanors of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Her preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for April 10 before District Judge Denise Stuck-Lewis.

How to Clean a Microfiber Couch So It Lasts Longer

Say goodbye to stains and odors!

how to clean a microfiber couch

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

Here, Carolyn Forté , the executive director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, shares her step-by-step guide on how to clean a microfiber couch . For a deeper clean, we recommend following all of these instructions, but for lighter debris and stains, you can stick to the simpler steps, like vacuuming the upholstery or spot-treating with an upholstery cleaner. A piece of key advice from Forté: "Always start with the gentlest method first and work your way up."

What You'll Need

  • Vacuum with upholstery attachment
  • Upholstery cleaner
  • Microfiber cleaning clothes
  • Garment steamer (optional)
  • Antibacterial fabric spray

Step-by-step instructions for cleaning your microfiber couch, 1. determine the right cleaning method..

The upholstered furniture industry uses a coding system to safely clean your couch. Check your couch's tag or under-the-seat cushions to find its cleaning code.

  • W means the fabric can be treated with water-based cleaners.
  • W/S means that both water- or solvent-based cleaners are safe to use.
  • S means the fabric cannot be treated with water and only solvent-based cleaning chemicals should be used.
  • X means the fabric can only be vacuumed or lightly brushed.

2. Steam clean the couch.

Not only are handheld garment steamers gentle on microfiber, but hot steam can kill surface dust mites and lift stains from the fabric. Go over the entire couch, allowing just the steam to touch and penetrate the upholstery. (We recommend using a garment steamer to start your deep clean, but feel free to skip this step if you don't have one).

3. Vacuum the upholstery.

With the upholstery attachment, vacuum the entire sofa: back, arms, skirt and cushions. Use the crevice tool to clean tricky areas — think crumbs and pet hair stuck in seams, around buttons or along the trim. If the cushions are removable, take them off and vacuum the fabric underneath, as well as both sides of each cushion.

Quick cleaning tip: In between vacuums, use a lint roller to pick up stray hairs or a few crumbs.

4. Test your cleaning solution.

Whether you've created your own cleaning solution (¼ teaspoon of mild dish soap mixed with one cup of warm water might do the trick) or you've bought an upholstery cleaner, it's important to test the product on a hidden area first. Apply the cleaning solution to a small spot to be certain that it's safe for the fabric and doesn't cause any water spotting or color loss.

5. Spot clean stains.

When using any store-bought upholstery cleaner, always follow the package instructions. For water-safe fabrics, tackle stains with an enzyme-containing formula like Bissell Professional Pet Stain & Odor Remover . If your cushions have removable covers, unzip them and place a paper towel between the fabric and filling to absorb excess moisture. Apply upholstery cleaner to a microfiber cloth and blot the stain carefully, working from the outside in. Once the stain is removed, dab the area with a damp cloth, then blot dry. For "S" fabrics, clean stains according to label directions with a solvent-based product such as ForceField Dry .

6. Bring in a carpet or upholstery cleaner for tougher stains.

For fabrics that can be treated with water, use a portable extraction cleaner , like Bissell’s Little Green Portable Cleaner , for a deeper clean. Dispense the cleaner and water mixture through the hose, agitate the fabric with the brush nozzle and vacuum up the dirt into the tank.

7. Allow fabric to air dry.

Let your couch completely dry, ideally overnight, before sitting or laying on the cushions. To speed up the drying process, use fans or open the windows on a warm day.

8. Sanitize the couch.

Once your sofa is clean and dry, kill lingering bacteria and remove smells on water-safe fabrics using a sanitizing spray, like GH Seal star Tide Antibacterial Fabric Spray .

Quick cleaning tip: Between deep cleans, eliminate any odors by sprinkling baking soda all over the sofa or spraying it with GH Seal Star Febreze FABRIC .

Packers seven-round mock draft 2.0: First-round trade highlights Green Bay’s haul

Sep 16, 2023; Iowa City, Iowa, USA; Iowa Hawkeyes defensive back Cooper DeJean (3) returns a punt against the Western Michigan Broncos during the second quarter at Kinnick Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

It’s officially NFL Draft month.

The Green Bay Packers will be one of the power players in this year’s proceedings, tied with the Arizona Cardinals , Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams for the most selections with 11. Green Bay acquired two Day 2 picks via the trades of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and cornerback Rasul Douglas in the past year, so general manager Brian Gutekunst is well equipped with five picks between Nos. 25 and 91 entering his seventh draft in charge.

With the first couple of waves of free agency in the rearview, the Packers’ draft needs have begun to crystallize. They probably need a second starting safety, depth at inside linebacker, edge rusher and cornerback, and more bodies at offensive tackle and interior offensive line to compete for starting spots and provide much-needed depth. With those in mind, here is a second crack at a Packers seven-round mock draft.

Round 1, Pick 19: Cooper DeJean, DB, Iowa (trade with Rams)

In this mock trade, the Packers give the Rams their first-round pick at No. 25 and their third-round pick at No. 91 (acquired in the Douglas trade with the Bills) to move up for an immediate starter. The Packers gave up a fourth-round pick when they traded from No. 30 to No. 26 in 2020 for quarterback Jordan Love . This move will require a little more, but Gutekunst thinks it’s worth it for someone who can play safety or cornerback and fills two needs for Green Bay.

Cooper DeJean is such a dynamic talent for @HawkeyeFootball . 💥 #WinningWednesday x @cdejean23 pic.twitter.com/zQVk8tztA1 — Iowa On BTN (@IowaOnBTN) June 21, 2023

The Packers have a history of drafting Iowa defensive players — safety Micah Hyde , defensive lineman Mike Daniels , cornerback Josh Jackson and edge rusher Lukas Van Ness are the most notable. DeJean joins the group and, in the words of The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, gives the Packers someone who possesses the athleticism to cover in space while also being the best run-defending defensive back in the class. Special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia will also be tempted to use DeJean as his punt returner to take some load off Keisean Nixon and Jayden Reed .

Brugler on DeJean: “Despite his season-ending injury , DeJean was recognized as the Big Ten’s Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year and the Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year. With his natural anticipation in coverage, DeJean is rarely out of position and uses his athletic gifts and top-tier ball skills to make plays (he allowed only one catch of 15-plus yards last season). He has a steady process to gather and go, but his lack of initial suddenness is something he must continue to mask to limit separation at the top of routes.”

Round 2, Pick 41: Jaden Hicks, S, Washington State

Minnesota safety Tyler Nubin and Miami safety Kamren Kinchens had RAS numbers (relative athletic score) from the pre-draft process that Gutekunst will likely stay away from. Hicks tested better, and Brugler calls him the top safety in this year’s class. He may not last this long, but if he does, Gutekunst can really revamp Green Bay’s secondary for defensive back specialist and new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley by giving him a new starting safety in Hicks and a new starting outside cornerback in DeJean. Gutekunst said at the annual league meeting that he’d rather pair veteran safety Xavier McKinney with a young guy who has his best football ahead of him instead of an experienced veteran.

Brugler on Hicks: “With his versatile skill set, he has the speed to play high and the toughness to play low, filling the alley with urgency or covering big targets in space. Although his read-anticipation is a work in progress, Hicks plays confident and free, trusting his athletic instincts to help him make plays.”

Jaden Hicks is a FS prospect in the 2024 draft class. He scored a 8.94 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 107 out of 1000 FS from 1987 to 2024. Pro day pending. https://t.co/W16kljdE5U pic.twitter.com/bYEO21b1me — Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) March 14, 2024

Round 2, Pick 58: Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale

The Packers appear to have their starting left tackle for 2024 in Rasheed Walker , but Gutekunst loves competition and needs depth there at the very least after Yosh Nijman signed with the Carolina Panthers . What else does Green Bay’s general manager love? Guys who can play both tackle and guard. Amegadjie played the 2021 season for Yale at left guard before switching to left tackle. According to Brugler: “From size and athleticism standpoints, Amegadjie pops on film because of his rare length, light feet and smooth body control to mirror pass rushers or create momentum as a run blocker. He requires development time, but the potential is awesome.”

Brugler also says Amegadjie might be “ the most interesting prospect ” in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Round 3, Pick 88: Bucky Irving, RB, Oregon

The Packers re-signed AJ Dillon to a contract barely above the veteran minimum, so they don’t necessarily need a No. 2 running back to Josh Jacobs since Dillon has proved to be a serviceable backup. It’s unlikely Dillon is just handed the No. 2 job in 2024, though, so don’t be surprised if Gutekunst drafts a running back to be Jacobs’ No. 2 potentially now and in 2025. At 5 foot 10 and 195 pounds, Irving doesn’t pack the same punch as Jacobs or Dillon, but he’s caught 87 passes for 712 yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons.

Brugler on Irving: “With his vision, darting quickness and wiggle in the hole, Irving routinely finds yards that aren’t blocked for him. Because of his lack of size and power, he will have a tough time in the NFL generating yards after contact, but his body balance and low center of gravity are assets — especially out in space.”

Round 4, Pick 126: Tommy Eichenberg, LB, Ohio State

The best linebacker in the Big Ten and two-time Ohio State captain fills an area of need for the Packers, who released De’Vondre Campbell and need more bodies at inside linebacker. They re-signed special-teamers Eric Wilson and Kristian Welch and are confident in Isaiah McDuffie as a starter, but the switch in scheme to a 4-3 requires better numbers at the position. Eichenberg, in his last full season played in 2022, had 120 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, a pick six and three passes defensed.

Round 5, Pick 169: Hunter Nourzad, OL, Penn State

I debated between a quarterback or an interior offensive lineman here since Gutekunst said he wants to get back to drafting multiple quarterbacks. But he also needs more depth than Royce Newman on the interior and perhaps competition for Sean Rhyan at right guard. Gutekunst drafted three offensive linemen in each of the 2020, 2021 and 2022 drafts before not taking any in 2023. He’ll get back to taking at least two in 2024, and Nourzad played substantial snaps at left tackle, left guard, center and right tackle in college.

Round 6, Pick 202: Myles Cole, edge, Texas Tech

The Packers might need a fourth edge rusher for their rotation since Kingsley Enagbare will miss a chunk of the 2024 season after tearing his ACL in the playoffs. Cole registered the highest RAS score among defensive ends but had only 3.5 sacks in two seasons at Texas Tech after transferring from Louisiana-Monroe.

Myles Cole is a DE prospect in the 2024 draft class. He scored a 9.92 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 14 out of 1685 DE from 1987 to 2024. Pro day pending. https://t.co/CeZvvEBiLk pic.twitter.com/0wLSinHaDD — Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) March 19, 2024

Round 6, Pick 219: Matt Lee, C, Miami

Josh Myers is in a contract year and the Packers will want insurance if he doesn’t play well enough to warrant a second deal. The Packers pumped Myers up last season, and he’ll need to deliver again in 2024 if he wants to stay around. Lee started 47 games over four seasons for UCF and Miami.

Round 7, Pick 245: Sam Hartman, QB, Notre Dame

Gutekunst doesn’t get his multi-quarterback draft, but he gets someone with plenty of high-level college starting experience who can be a developmental project on the practice squad. Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur have raved about backup Sean Clifford this offseason.

Round 7, Pick 255: Kalen DeLoach, LB, Florida State

Gutekunst said at the combine that the Packers will likely carry extra linebackers this year because of Hafley’s schematic change. They add another camp body with their last pick to join Wilson, Welch and Eichenberg behind the starting two of McDuffie and Quay Walker .

Full seven-round haul

1, 19: Cooper DeJean, DB, Iowa

2, 41: Jaden Hicks, S, Washington State

2, 58: Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale

3, 88: Bucky Irving, RB, Oregon

4, 126: Tommy Eichenberg, LB, Ohio State

5, 169: Hunter Nourzad, OL, Penn State

6, 202: Myles Cole, EDGE, Texas Tech

6, 219: Matt Lee, C, Miami

7, 245: Sam Hartman, QB, Notre Dame

7, 255: Kalen DeLoach, LB, Florida State

James Carville says Biden's poll numbers have gotten 'a little bit better' but that the president won't 'replicate' 2020

  • James Carville told MSNBC's Ari Melber that Democrats face a major engagement issue this year.
  • "We're not going to replicate the 2020 coalition," he said, pointing to polling struggles with non-white men.
  • Carville has been vocal that the party isn't adequately reaching out to males.

Democratic strategist James Carville during a recent MNSBC interview said he didn't think President Joe Biden would be able to reassemble his 2020 electoral coalition in the November election.

Carville, who in recent months has been increasingly vocal about his view that the party is losing touch with non-white male voters, told host Ari Melber that while Biden's polling numbers have improved, the president would have a lot of work to do to win reelection.

"I do think that the polling has gotten a little bit better," Carville said of Biden's standing after his recent State of the Union address . "But we're not going to replicate the 2020 coalition."

Biden's 2020 electoral victory was fueled by robust support among young voters; Black, Asian, and Latino voters; suburban swing voters and Independents; and college-educated voters of all races.

"Most people think we're going to lose Hispanic males," he continued. "Young Black males have become so disengaged from this process and it's happened rapidly. That's of great concern for me."

Carville then remarked further about what he saw as the lack of male engagement with the Democratic Party.

"I think President Biden could win the election, but in terms of identifying with the party as you go forward … the male detachment in the United States is a significant problem, particularly among non-white males," he added.

Carville's comments came after The New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd recently spoke with him for a wide-ranging interview in which he said that "preachy females" were alienating blocs of men from the party.

"If you listen to Democratic elites — NPR is my go-to place for that — the whole talk is about how women, and women of color, are going to decide this election," he told Dowd . "I'm like: 'Well, 48% of the people that vote are males. Do you mind if they have some consideration?'"

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

People watch the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.

Andrea Morales for The New York Times

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.
