Overcast HQ

Overcast Supports AWS for Media & Entertainment Initiative

AWS for Media & Entertainment — Philippe Brodeur and Zsolt Lorincz on AWS stand at NAB 2019

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a new AWS for Media & Entertainment initiative to simplify cloud workflows. Overcast’s Future of Work Video Platform is built on AWS and we are delighted to be a partner in this initiative!

AWS for Media & Entertainment

So, what is AWS for M&E? AWS for Media & Entertainment is an initiative featuring new and existing services and solutions from AWS and AWS Partners, built specifically for content creators, rights holders, producers, broadcasters, and distributors. AWS adds the newly announced Amazon Nimble Studio — a service that enables customers to set up creative studios in hours instead of weeks — to a portfolio of more purpose-built media and entertainment industry services than any other cloud, including   AWS Elemental MediaPackage, AWS Elemental MediaConnect, AWS Elemental MediaLive, AWS Elemental MediaConvert, and Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS). AWS for Media & Entertainment also simplifies the process of building, deploying, and reinventing mission-critical industry workloads by aligning AWS and AWS Partner capabilities against five solution areas: Content Production; Media Supply Chain & Archive; Broadcast; Direct-to-Consumer & Streaming; and Data Science & Analytics. Overcast is an AWS partner in the Media Supply Chain & Archive solution.

“The big benefit of our new Overcast system based on AWS is efficiency and consistency.   This feels like the start of a long relationship rather than just having bought a piece of software.”   — Neil Adcock, CPL UK.

Overcast MAX

In previous blog posts, we’ve introduced you to  Overcast MAX — a cloud-based platform for media asset management (MAM) without the traditional costs associated with combining MAM, PAM (product asset management) and DAM (digital asset management).   The flexible microservices approach and API connection to AWS services (like Amazon Rekognition, AWS Elemental MediaConvert and AWS Elemental MediaLive) lets you configure solutions to build workflows that truly match your needs.   For example, if you produce live sport events you need to share content before and after the match with multiple different stakeholders, including analysts, players, referees, marketers, sponsors and more. Here’s how you benefit:

  • a collaboration portal with granular access control;
  • a UI that is intuitive and enhanced with on-screen messaging so even the least technical stakeholders can manage their needs; and
  • automated tasks like time-based transcription and image recognition allow users to reduce search time by up to 98%.

Overcast MAX is first and foremost a collaboration platform that builds access to powerful video processing tools into effective and efficient workflows.   With a mission to make it as easy to manage video files as it is to manage word documents, MAX enables teams throughout your organization to work within the video supply chain.   The core storage and collaboration features of MAX are enhanced by 9 proprietary modules that include everything from automated subtitle generation (powered by Amazon Transcribe) to maximizing a scalable streaming service (using Amazon CloudFront).

Overcast MAX can be deployed out-of-the box for smaller teams, or configured with a choice of 9 modules for larger volume workflows. Clients benefit from:

  • Fast response times and fast deployment — whether you BYO Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) storage bucket, are syncing an on-premises repository, or choose to store your content within Overcast’s virtual private cloud, you can be up and running with production workflows within a matter of minutes.
  • Cost budgeting — using a proprietary Simulator, Overcast can emulate your work environment over a short period of time to better forecast usage costs and how to optimize your processes.
  • Time efficiencies — clients report savings up to 90% of time spent on mundane tasks like transcoding due to our automation.

We have many satisfied clients in various countries, including CPL UK — a global marketing and communications firm based in London.

“It’s at least 10 times faster to find things. We have 27 users on four different continents from three different companies — and one very happy Alex.”   — Alexandra Bailey, CPL UK. “CPL UK is an example of the increasing number of enterprise customers outside of the media and entertainment vertical that are successfully using digital media workflows on AWS to increase brand awareness. Overcast’s browser-based platform makes it easy for enterprise customers to launch in minutes without the complexity of managing hardware infrastructure.” — Eric Iverson, Chief Technologist for M&E, AWS.

VIDEO STREAMING

Building a cloud-based video system aligned to your needs delivers cross-functional efficiency and substantial cost savings.

CLOUD MIGRATION

We build cost-effective environments that allow your properties to handle traffic spikes flawlessly.

BUSINESS PROBLEM

The sales team at ABC was feeling a lot like substitute teachers, bogged down with cumbersome old tech and processes at crucial moments.

TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION

A clear solution emerged: a single app that the sales team could use with any mobile device or computer

The new system revamped the entire sales process, making it faster, easier, and more efficient.

wheel of fortune

Whenever a big sweepstake was launched, avid fans would descend on the website and often overtax its servers.

Moving the site’s servers to the cloud provided the elasticity Wheel of Fortune needed.

When the team launches new sweepstakes, preventative scaling is used to double, triple, or even quadruple their capacity to match expected traffic.

DC Entertainment site is routinely crawled by third parties looking for security vulnerabilities or new leaks ahead of announcements.

ML Log evaluation. We started by setting up a data pipeline that replicated the manual process Metal Toad had been doing for years

Quickly identified new threats. The ML Log Monitoring solution quickly found two groups of IPs for evaluation.

Fox needed a transformation to streamline operations, maximize efficiency, and optimize coordination.

The new platform will replace legacy systems with a solution that unifies viewer experience and aligns operations across the enterprise.

Fox now has in hand the detailed plan they need to make Fox Mississippi a reality.

When approaching Metal Toad for a potential partnership, they made it clear that their current website was falling short.

Sony-logo

Search results were stale, poorly ranked, and simply not delivering the content that users demanded.

AWS adds the newly announced Amazon Nimble Studio, a service that enables customers to set up creative studios in hours instead of weeks, to a portfolio of more purpose-built media and entertainment industry services than any other cloud, including AWS Elemental MediaPackage, AWS Elemental MediaConnect, AWS Elemental MediaLive, AWS Elemental MediaConvert, and Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS).

Grabyo’s cloud-based platform enables broadcasters and content publishers to produce and edit live video and VOD content using just a web browser. The platform is used by some of the world’s leading media organizations, across sports, news, entertainment, eSports and live events.

Grabyo and AWS Media Collaboration

As a cloud-native platform, Grabyo enables production teams to work fully remotely and collaborate in real-time from anywhere in the world. Its platform removes the need for much of the on-site equipment typically used for video production, thereby streamlining video production workflows for distribution to linear broadcast and digital platforms.

Grabyo leverages various AWS technologies to deliver a powerful set of tools in the cloud. As a Launch Partner for AWS Cloud Digital Interface (CDI) , Grabyo can also support workloads that require high-performance connectivity and uncompressed live video transport that have historically needed an on-premises deployment, using Serial Digital Interface (SDI) connections.

Grabyo Producer, Grabyo’s advanced live broadcasting platform, also utilizes AWS Elemental MediaLive for broadcast-grade live video processing, which enables Grabyo users to produce and deliver live broadcasts to linear television, digital and social platforms. Grabyo Producer is a cloud-based vision mixing platform with broadcast-grade tools, including a browser-based multiviewer, audio mixing service and remote guest contribution web app. Users can vision mix with capabilities including scene snapshots, graphic overlays, and frame-accurate feed switching.

Implement AI into your media and entertainment workflow

Explore & define, ai roadmap: exploration, applications, & goal setting.

We'll explore AI's applications and benefits through research, workshops, and team engagement. This will identify how AI can enhance customer experience, inventory management, demand forecasting, pricing optimisation, and fraud detection. We'll then set clear goals, create a roadmap, and identify specific use cases for integrating AI in your retail operations.

Assess & Develop

Data preparation: evaluation & model development.

We'll evaluate data sources, plan infrastructure, and aggregate diverse data. Then, we'll develop AI models through machine learning, including algorithm selection, feature engineering, training, and validation. Models will be deployed, integrated, and tested for accuracy and performance.

Refine & Scale

Ai expansion: monitoring, retraining & scaling.

AI implementation is iterative, involving continuous monitoring, feedback collection, and refinements. Retraining models with more data enhances accuracy and adaptability. After successful initial deployment, expand AI across departments with chatbots for customer support, computer vision for visual product search, and AI-driven recommendation engines.

Datamine provides analytics solutions for floor optimisation, application development, customer segmentation, problem gamer recognition, loyalty scheme development, fraud detection and more for a number of Australasia's large media and entertainment companies.

Scroll down to find out how Datamine has helped these organisations respond to typical challenges that face the media and entertainment industry.

LOTTO NZ GAINS INSIGHT INTO ONLINE GAMING BEHAVIOUR

THE CHALLENGE

In line with their goal to be a world-leading lottery organisation dedicated to delivering the maximum benefit to New Zealand communities, Lotto regularly monitors customer penetration within the market and is interested in extending that knowledge by assessing the online gaming habits of Kiwis.

Lotto noticed an increase in the number of gaming sites reaching out to New Zealanders with the promise of a win enticed by lucrative new player bonuses, such as ‘Get $1,000 free’.  With little robust information available about the performance of the online offshore vendors, Lotto contacted Datamine about performing an analysis to understand how New Zealanders are interacting with online gaming sites to inform future strategy.

THE SOLUTION

As part of Datamine’s analysis for Lotto, we created a report covering the following information from the past three years:

  • The total value of online gaming
  • The number of online transactions and customers
  • The differences between on-shore and off-shore gaming

Using our Business Insight data, we identified the relevant merchants and transactions in order to provide Lotto with a rounded view of the above factors.  During the analysis, we discovered useful insights about online gaming in New Zealand – including that participation is increasing (up 58% since 2015), as is annual spend (up over 100% since 2015).

The findings from the analysis have proved very useful for Lotto and show a growth trajectory for the online offshore gaming market in New Zealand.

The information has provided Lotto NZ with a robust, empirical based understanding of the wider market trends and has also been used in discussions with both the Board and industry regulators.

EVENT CINEMAS LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMER DEMOGRAPHICS

Event Cinemas wanted to understand more about their customers in a specific Auckland suburb.  The overall aim was to increase viewing at that suburb’s theatre, as the site was experiencing low occupancy, particularly in the evenings.

A clearer picture of those in their catchment area was necessary to enable Event Cinemas to create informed marketing strategies and initiatives that would appeal to their target market.

Datamine used data from Event Cinema's loyalty programme, and the national census to create a demographic profile of the specified catchment area, as compared to the rest of the Auckland region.

Datamine was able to evaluate the catchment area population size and provide a breakdown by household composition, age, income and ethnicity.

As a whole, the catchment area was not very different from the rest of Auckland, however, there was a large variance in socioeconomic status and a markedly larger proportion of certain ethnic groups than others.

These results are enabling Event Cinemas to run marketing activities tailored to the demographics of their catchment area.

Price variances are being considered in order to cater to both ends of the socioeconomic scale, and one cinema is possibly going to be dedicated solely to subtitled language films catering to the prime ethnic group of the catchment area.

As a result of the project, Event Cinemas achieved a much clearer picture of that suburb’s cinematic preferences and has been able to alter their marketing accordingly.

QMS doubles turnover with bespoke outdoor media application

QMS is an organisation that manages outdoor media displays throughout New Zealand and Australia.  In order to sell advertisement slots on billboards, digital billboards and buses, they need to provide the client with a sense for what kind of person might be seeing the ads, at what time, in what location etc.

They realised that they needed a data-driven way to do this, so they got in touch with Datamine about creating an analytical solution that would deliver the measurement and insights needed.

Our team of product managers, data scientists and UX developers worked with QMS to produce an application called The Datalab.  It uses external data, such as aggregated Census, banking and mobile location information, to show QMS clients what the potential reach of their media campaign would be.

The application effectively manages access rights and a number of different permission levels, dictating not only what can be seen, but also the scenarios and calculations that can be run.

The platform is an ongoing partnership, and The Datalab is at the heart of every campaign recommendation QMS delivers to its customers. They’ve been thrilled with the results of the platform, as have their clients – in the words of one customer, “QMS’ reach and frequency measurement tools enable us to effectively optimise our out-of-home advertising campaigns by assessing various scenarios to ensure we deliver to our clients objectives.”

Since QMS began working with Datamine, turnover has doubled.

EXPLORATORY ANALYTICS CRACK THE MYSTERY BEHIND DECREASING REVENUES

A large international entertainment business faced a significant year-on-year revenue decline from their loyalty base and limited understanding of why it was happening.  With budgets forecasting increases, there was a need to do something quickly.  Despite the business having significant internal analytics capacity, it was unable to come up with an effective answer, so contracted Datamine to examine the problem in an exploratory piece of work.

Datamine pulled thousands of variables and performed a comprehensive data mining exercise, pinpointing that the problems were due to several seemingly benign strategic changes in product mix, promotions, staffing levels, and pricing.  These results were then visualised and presented back to the client.

Having specifically identified the issues and highlighted them to the client, Datamine worked with the business to plan and execute a revised strategy which reversed the decline - the $60k project delivered a net gain of several million dollars of revenue over the following six months.

MAJOR ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY PERSONALISES MARKETING EFFORTS

A major entertainment client wanted to take a more individualised approach to their customer contact programme rather than communicating with customers in a traditional ‘blanket’ approach.

The aim was to tailor communications to each individual customer’s requirements.  As well as avoiding over-mailing customers, or contacting them with inappropriate, irrelevant or untimely messages, this would enable a more efficient use of marketing budget.

Datamine worked with the client to identify customer ‘lifecycle’ touchpoints according to individual requirements at appropriate stages of the relationship.  Analytics and predictive modelling were planned into the process to:

  • provide meaningful insights into customer behaviours
  • assist the ‘who/what/when’ of their communications planning
  • identify individual customers at whom to target a specific message

The organisation implemented the suggested changes, with the models being run in conjunction with each other, alongside their active loyalty programme.  This added an increased level of sophistication to the company’s marketing programme.
