Big Work Fitness: Opinions

Top Rated Gym

Fantastic experience: Pretty much the best gym around, the staff was extremely friendly and everybody is very supportive. Equipment is exactly what is needed and no frills. If you're looking for a gym in the area this is the place. Prob worth a drive even considering the other places around aren't as good in my opinion.

Fantastic experience: Now this is a real gym, with inside and outside work out stations. 3/3/22- Still an amazing Gym. One of my favorite work out stations is the Punching bags.

Fantastic experience: I love this gym! There is such a great culture here. From the first time I walked in and every time after, everyone is super nice. This gym has all the things you need to lift heavy. It’s a “to-the-point” gym that doesn’t sell you on all the fluffy stuff that you never use anyway. Also, they have an outdoor space that is really great on those beautiful days. Jason is super nice and the coaches for training are awesome too! I’ve been working with Dani for personal training/coaching and have been feeling great and seeing results. I highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: Awesome spot. Came in from out of town and dropped in today. They were very responsive to get me a guest pass and they have a great indoor and outdoor workout area

Fantastic experience: Big Work is an incredible place. So many changes for the best! We love Jason :)

Fantastic experience: An excellent gym located in downtown Charleston. Amazing atmosphere supported by knowledgeable and friendly staff

Fantastic experience: Several months ago i was searching for a gym and this was recommended to me. The description given was "its a real gym, more squat racks than treadmills and youll actually make gains there". I decided to walk in and apply for a membership. When the person at the front desk (Danielle, who was very helpful and nice, Jason will come later) ask how she could help me, i stated "make me un-fat". She indicated they could do that if i had the motivation and signed me up for a membership. Over the following days i proceeded to go with no real purpose or aim, just lifting and following poor advice from tabloid type lifting articles. Now enter the other manager Jason. He noticed that i had no sense of what to do and approached me. Long story short, thru him and a few others, 4 months later im the same weight, 1.5 inches down on my waist, and have added almost 100lbs to all of my compound lifts. This gym is the real deal. Other gyms claim to be "judgement free" however the truth dosent need to be stated. This gym is only filled with good management, and positive people who believe in bringing those around them up, never putting down. If you want a gym, a real one, where you can actually explore the physical limits of the human body, this is the gym for you. Mediocrity is a sad state of the human condition, perfection is a choice. Make the right one and join.

Fantastic experience: Big Works is the best gym in charleston. The atmosphere is great and will motivate you to push yourself. New management has been accommodating and provides equipment upgrades regularly. Overall, Big Works is a 10/10 gym experience for anyone looking to get great a workout in, regardless of your fitness level!

Fantastic experience: The new management has been phenomenal. Although he is a little bit terrifying in size, Jason is a very kind hearted and helpful individual. Ask him for help and he provides with a smile. Big Work Fitness...the best gym in SC

Fantastic experience: Love this place. It has everything you need available 24/7 365 days a year. The staff is super friendly and helpful!

Fantastic experience: What a place to workout. I was only in town for a few days and needed somewhere I could keep up with training. Everybody was super friendly. Ideal if you’re looking for a proper place to train whether it be for a couple of days or longer. Loved the atmosphere and look forward to going back there when I’m next in town. Thanks a lot guys!

Fantastic experience: Love this gym! Everything you need for solid workout, on your own schedule, at any level of fitness. Members have key fob access to the gym 24 hrs a day and bringing guests on a day pass is easy via their app signup. The manager is super welcoming, friendly and helpful and has done a great job improving the gym since he started. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: I was in Charleston visiting for two months and became a member at Big Work Fitness Factory. I can honestly say it has been the absolute best gym I’ve ever been to. They have all the equipment you can imagine and is a large space to get everything done. The staff member were extremely friendly and helpful. Whenever I’m back in Charleston I’ll be back at Big Work.

Fantastic experience: Was visiting Charleston for two weeks and needed a place to work out. Big Work was the perfect place. Just what I was looking for. Great atmosphere, great equipment, great people!

Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality Fantastic gym in downtown Charleston. The atmosphere is unlike any other gym I’ve visited. The staff is super accommodating, the old-school vibe gives your workout an edge. Olympic lifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding, CrossFit, any discipline can be accommodated!

Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism , Quality Was visiting Charleston for the week so I got myself one of the week passes. Great value for $55 for the week. Great gym, great energy, super friendly and helpful staff.

Fantastic experience: Just in town for a day and was excited to see this gym was close to my hotel. Decent sized gym with great selection of equipment. Loved the outdoor work area with stones and a keg. Only thing that people should know ahead of time is concerning the day passes. The website says to stop in between 7 am and 7 pm and get a day pass from a staff member, but when I showed up there around 10 am, no staff were around. Luckily a member let me in once I showed him that I'd purchased a day pass. He also said that the owner/staff aren't in at predictable times, so it's best to call ahead if you're trying to use a day pass. If you have a monthly membership they have key fobs for 24/7 access.

Fantastic experience: Positive: Professionalism , Quality Dope place to train when visiting! Outdoor space is awesome and has every piece of equipment you need to do BIG WORK! Owner is a legend.

Fantastic experience: Big work seems to be the only serious gym in Charleston and it's already one of my favorite gyms that I've ever trained in. They have all the equipment you could possibly need for strength training combined with an atmosphere that will immediately add 10 lbs. To your bench. If you're serious about lifting I can't recommend this place enough!

Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism I was in search of a gym while visiting town and big work didn’t disappoint. Friendly staff, easy access, efficient equipment and amazing atmosphere. I highly recommend this location if you’re looking for all the elements I mentioned, especially if you’re a current athlete or one of the past this place will satisfy your needs.

Fantastic experience: Positive: Communication , Professionalism Stayed in Charleston for a month and this was the perfect place to workout. This gym has a little bit of everything and it was very easy to sign up. Enjoyed lifting here!

Fantastic experience: I was visiting Charleston and found this gym! I like to visit Charleston a lot and now I know where to go every time! The gym has great equipment and the atmosphere was chill and nonjudgmental. The owner was personable and helpful. I recommend this gym for locals and visitors.

Fantastic experience: Hands down my favorite gym in downtown Charleston. Good equipment, good people. They have equipment for every athlete whether its Olympic lifting, strongman, or gymnastics. Highly recommend

Fantastic experience: Best gym in Charleston. Raw, underground feel with tons of unique and quality equipment. The owner is very friendly and constantly making upgrades to better the facility. Definitely check this one out if your in the area!

Fantastic experience: Just finished up a workout and photo shoot here and this gym is amazing! I’m from Michigan and the outdoor/indoor facility has a great feel and I recommend everyone to check it out!

Fantastic experience: Strength training paradise! All kinds of bars, a log, atlas stones, tons of squat racks, kilo bumpers for the weightlifters... and probably a lot of other stuff I didn't notice during my quick visit. I just popped in on a 1 day pass while I was in town, but they had all I needed and more!

Fantastic experience: Came in from out of town for my buddies company party. Awesome gym, great hospitality. Loved all the equipment and atmosphere!

Fantastic experience: While this was my first time to Charleston, I am very anxious to get back to Big Workout Fitness. The highlight of my days, were my workouts. Feeling strong, feeling empowered and feeling great. The hours of 24/7 are fantastic, as well as the equipment, members, trainers and owner. If you try just one workout, you will want to come back for more!!

Fantastic experience: Richrof and the whole Big Work team know what’s up. Amazing gym and amazing experience. We were traveling through town looking for a workout and they made us feel right at home. Gym has everything you need for CrossFit, powerlifting and just getting after it. Tell your people to workout here. I will certainly be back anytime I’m in the area

Fantastic experience: Best gym I’ve been a member at period. This is a “no-BS” kind of gym and has a really cool underground old school feel. Downstairs has a full assortment of racks with Olympic bumper weights along with various bench presses, trap bars, and machines. Upstairs has all the cables and grips you could dream of along with a heavy bag and speed bag for boxing. They even have outdoor Astroturf for lunges and sled pulls. Gym is chalk friendly, and hard work is not scarce here. Honesty couldn’t say enough about this gym. Staff is outstanding, gym is 24/7 which was a huge plus. My only regret is that I am only in the area for the summer and will have to go back to a much more lame gym back home. I will definitely miss this place and the gains I received.

Fantastic experience: No contract no problem... Everything you need here CrossFit, Gymnastics, Power lifting, machines, endurance machines that are all top of the line! Great atmosphere! Protein shakes and smoothies inside! Every kind of athlete here is welcome

Fantastic experience: I was in town for a wedding and had the chance to stop by and lift at this spot. Great experience for sure. There is a ton of powerlifting and strength-training equipment to choose from, and having other dedicated lifters around creates a great atmosphere for lifting. Will be back next time I am in town!

Fantastic experience: Traveling to Charleston from out of town and looking to lift some weights. Every other "gym" I found online was either a cycling studio, cross fit gym, or some other fitness center where you could take aerobics classes. All I wanted was to move some weight around, and Big Works let me do just that. The price for a day pass was cheap ($10), and the owner was really helpful working with me so I could come in early with the time slot that worked for my schedule. For any other combat veterans out there, this gym reminded me a lot lifting in Iraq...basically a plywood structure with big fans circulating the air around a large room full of old free weights. What more could you want?

Fantastic experience: I was in town on vacation and this gym is just like being at my home gym. There are plenty of platforms for oly and powerlifting. Upstairs has machines and an MMA area. They even have stones and logs. If you’re looking for a place to chalk up and sweat this is it.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic barbell gym. Top notch equipment with plenty of squat racks, specialty bars, etc. Definitely not your typical big box corporate gym.

Fantastic experience: This gym is the definition of an Adult Playground!! The gym is FULL of almost every single type of equipment you could need regardless of how AND when you train since they’re open 24 hours - Weightlifting (men’s + women’s bars, kilo plates, change plates, platforms, squat racks, jerk blocks, etc.), powerlifting, bodybuilding, strong man, CrossFit (ropes, bands, rigs, rowers), athletic performance, you name it, they have the equipment for it. I dropped in at the gym a few times on business and the staff were extremely friendly. They even offered to let me use their personal tripod to film my lifts :) By far the best equipped and most unique gym I’ve ever been too. I highly recommend checking them out!!!

Fantastic experience: Great drop in. Bare bones powerlifting gym but was able to get a weightlifting workout done on one of their squat rack platforms. No women’s barbells (that I could find) but I don’t usually mind that as long as I can get my work done. No AC so it’s suuuuuuuper hot inside in the summer. Shower available as well!

Fantastic experience: This is possibly the best gym in the Charleston area, great equipment, great atmosphere, 24 hour access and the rates aren't bad at all. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I trained here every day during our vacation in charleston. Great facility for anyone looking to get stronger and more fit. It has all you need and no frills (which is exactly what we look for). Staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. We couldn't say enough nice things about this place and were sad to leave for the last time when we left charleston.

Fantastic experience: This gym is a legitimate “powerlifting” gym! Texas Deadlift bar, many squat racks with platforms. Chains, bands, body building equipment, knee wrap roller. Shirtless allowed if that’s your bag! Awesome vacation drop in spot for the strong! My wife and loved it!

Fantastic experience: This gym is awesome! Along with the cool setup, and the specialty equipment it is one of the few gyms that has a Donkey Calf Machine! This is the gym to go to if you're out of town or looking for a gym to go too when moving in to town. It's open 24 hours a day.

Fantastic experience: Home away from home! We were in Charleston for a wedding and looking for a place to grab a workout. This place is awesome. The owner showed up on a Sunday to let us in so we could drop in ($10) and treated us like old friends. (Other gyms in the area were $20-$25). The gym is clean and has everything you need from weights to cardio. I highly recommend stopping by Big Works!

Fantastic experience: Solid, no-nonsense gym. One of the few places around town you can find a number of squat racks. Friendly staff is also accommodating. The gym is 24 hours, so if you have a membership, you can come and go as you please.

Fantastic experience: I travel all over the country for work and am always looking for a gym to go to for a cheap day pass. This was the best gym I've been to. It had everything a powerlidter could want and all the employees were friendly and had no problem with helping. If I lived in Charleston, this would be my gym!

Fantastic experience: Dropped in while visiting Charleston and gotta say that I'm super impressed with this gym. All kinds of racks and equipment, perfect for powerlifting and weightlifting.

Fantastic experience: Great gym. Super friendly staff. Was able to drop in for a day pass while on vacation to get some Olympic lifting in and be back home before the rest of the house was up and moving. Definitely recommend this gym.

Fantastic experience: Great gym with all the necessary equipment for powerlifters, Olympic lifters, strong men, and the average joe. Staff was helpful, gym was clean. Great experience, made the $10 for a 1 day pass well worth it.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely a great place to train for the people that are serious and expect results. The gym is fully equipped with sorinex equipment. Great atmosphere to get results. My suggestion for anyone is to keep driving past pivotal fitness or snap fitness and go here. Excellent gym where you can get real results.

Fantastic experience: Such an awesome gym, chaulk dust everywhere loud music perfect for heavy lifting. 10 dollars for a day which is awesome. Tons of weights. Will defiantly go back

Fantastic experience: Fantastic facility. It's a gym meant to WORK! No frills just solid space and equipment. The staff was super friendly with an "anything for our customers" mentality. Love it.

Good gym, could use a refurbish. very friendly staff, and a good ambience, could use a polish here and there, maybe a referb

I was traveling for work and had to find a gym that was similar to my home gym in Charlotte, and Big Work hit the spot. Great experience from the first interaction with Jason, who was extremely helpful and easy to work with. Did a week long pass and got my money's worth. The atmosphere and set up of the gym is great. Old school vibe and plenty of equipment options.

Downstairs

decent equipment but lousy customer service. Advertised as 24h but unless you become a monthly member with a key fob (total $90/mo) you can't get in when the owner isn't there and/or chooses not to answer his phone. My experience: I've purchased day passes on multiple occasions only to drive to the gym and have to turn around because there's no way to get in. no answer from the doorbell and no answer at the number you're supposed to call. On another occasion I tried to use a previously purchased day pass from one such instance and was told by the owner, no, you need to buy a new one. Now getting aggravated but still wanting to work out here, I actually came to the gym to give in sign up, get a fob, but again the owner is gone and no answer on the phone, so I'm going home. I really would love to join a 24/7 powerlifting gym, sounds great on paper but I'm starting to think it's not worth it. The owner should really just hire some more people to help out and deal with customers as it's clearly more than a one-person job.

Was visiting Charleston for vacation and found this gem of a gym to work out in the two days I was there. What a great spot. This is not Equinox. You're not gonna get a massage and a lavender towel as you walk in. This is a gym for people who know what they're doing and just want to get on with it. There were loads of squat racks and power lifting apparatus which was great. Part of it is outside which is fun and the people in there were friendly. Also, everything was nearly put away and respected by the members which was great. There's nothing worse than a gym where people don't bother to put anything back. I'd definitely recommend this place and would come back in a heartbeat!

big works gym

Do you go to the gym with a goal...or do you just go to the gym as a check in the block for the day? If you are the latter of the two...stick to planet fitness! Big work is AWESOME! No BS, No frills, no stupid door greeters, and a very good gym etiquette culture. This gym has EVERYTHING you need, regardless if you power lift, CrossFit, or work out for health. The gym is always organized and the staff takes care of it well. Best of all...THEY ARE OPEN 24 HOURS DAY! No classes restricting portions of the gym. Everything is automated and the system works very well. I've been to more gyms than I can remember, this place is by far on my top 5 ever. I come in, deal with zero BS from other patrons, hit it hard, and I'm out. It's called big work for a reason. Your there to work! Not satisfy your ego. BEST GYM FOR REAL LIFTERS IN DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON!

Pros: Pretty cool gym. Equipment needs a little freshening up. Clientele are nice & accommodating. Outside space is nice and a plus. Cons: People don't use bars for the correct purpose. Too much large foot print items taking up space. Bathrooms aren't the cleanest you'll use. Big thing communication is nonexistent. Overall it's a decent gym but not worth $65/month.

Photo of Jon L.

Best place to work up a sweat. The owners make it a point to make sure each member is satisfied with anything they need to make their workout the best they can.....highly recommended. Hands down the best gym in all of Charleston County

Photo of Matthieu K.

Dropped in here a few times while in town. Solid black iron gym with everything you need to do all the big lifts/Olympic lifts. Plenty of power racks, bumpers, and proper bars. There are a couple Texas power bars for deads - nice plus. He has a few racks outside. Did squats and presses outside one afternoon - that was a huge plus. Everything you need / nothing you don't. Highly recommended.

I'm only in town for a few days and came across this gym. It's got a great atmosphere and the staff was super friendly! I'm used to working out at a big corporate gym with all of your basic/normal equipment. This has that PLUS all the fun stuff! It was fun working out outside, climbing rope, jumping up the stairs etc. I really enjoyed working out here and highly recommend it. It appears people of all levels work out here as well, so you'll definitely feel comfortable no matter who you are! Day pass was $10 which is reasonable

First off, major kudos for going out of your way to a gym while only in town a few days -- super impressive. Everyone should have that kind of discipline. Secondly, it means a lot that you had a blast working outside with us. We'll be here if you are ever in town again and need to work off some steam. Stay safe and strong, Rychrof, Manager

The TUT Fitness review: Do you need this affordable mini home gym?

B y now, you know fully well that you can get a gym-level workout at home. But with so many options on the market, from Peloton stationary bikes to adaptable dumbbells and any number of cardio machines, what’s one to do?

TUT Fitness has a lot to like in the home gym department. The dynamic resistance-based apparatus, otherwise known as the Trainer Gym, offers a whole host of workouts without eating up much space. This is an attractive option if you’re looking to sculpt muscle without going too hard in the impact realm.

How TUT Fitness works

The TUT acronym stands for “time under tension,” the theme of this fitness machine. The philosophy is built around motion under resistance and holding certain positions for maximum results. Think low and slow vs. hard and fast. The TUT gym works a lot like a cable machine, swapping the weights for rubber resistance bands (or plates, as the TUT refers to them). Perhaps you’ve worked with resistance bands before, either through physical therapy or a lower-impact workout routine. Either way, it’s a great way to get a lower-impact workout with potentially big results.

The tower houses pulleys and attachments for exercise equipment ranging from workout bars and ankle bands to rowers. There are three connection areas — the middle one being adjustable — and accessories are added or swapped out via carabiners. The resistance plates easily clip in and out, with color-coded resistance weight levels of varying degrees (2, 5, 10, 20, 40). Note: One of the coolest aspects is the ability to stack multiple bands to find your sweet spot, inching all the way up to about 200 pounds worth of resistance.

For $999, the basic setup includes the trainer, an aluminum bar curl, a carabiner, two handles, two ankle straps (which can velcro together into a waist belt), a cable lock, and a pair of wall-mount plates. An app, which includes more than 250 exercises and on-demand workout sessions, is also included.

There’s no denying the versatility. Of the many, many pieces of exercise equipment out there, the TUT Trainer Gym excels because it is so dextrous. The machine sets up with ease and quickly, weighing in at a decidedly petite eleven-and-a-half pounds. The machine’s ability to swing on its hinge pins is a major bonus, especially for those operating in tighter spaces. Really, all you need is a door frame or post, and in a few minutes, the apparatus is up and running. The fact that the machine extends a mere six inches from its base is impressive, allowing the user to utilize that extra space to work out.

Being portable is another bonus. While it can screw directly into the wall, we suggest using the clamps to place it anywhere you see fit. That way, the machine can come down when it’s not in use (although being so sleek, it’s not much of an eyesore fully assembled). Switching out resistance plates is a breeze, and the DIY approach is a gift, setting the user up with countless exercise routines stemming from one skinny yet agile piece of gym equipment.

An open-ended workout

You get a lot for your money here. We’re fond of the adjustability of the machine as well as its sturdy build. You get what you put into the thing. In other words, while a gym will have specialized equipment for calves, quads, triceps, and the like, this trainer accounts for them all, so long as you’re motivated to follow along on an app session or create your own program, swapping handles for bars and repositioning things en route. In that sense, the TUT Trainer Gym is a bit of a transformer, catering to your goals and allowing for many, many workout permutations targeting muscles from head to toe.

The rower has another big layer

The rower is a pricy add-on ($699) but allows for an entire host of extra full-body exercises. Sure, you can pretend you’re on the water and row until it hurts, but you can also use it for slides and cardio workouts, as well as ab sculpting with any number of pilates routines. The rower adds another big layer to your home gym setup and is both lightweight and stows away with ease. And it operates under the same resistance plates, making it extremely compatible and great for incremental workouts.

If you’ve used the clamps to install and only want it visible during workouts, fret not. The tower breaks down into three storable pieces almost immediately, and the whole set can get dropped into a drawer or tucked under a bed without issue. The trainer is fun to use and bends harmoniously with your workout.

The TUT Trainer Gym is not perfect. Accessories cost extra- sometimes significantly- and things you might think would come in complementary fashion (an adjustable power bar) are bought separately. Gym rats who like to lift hard may find this machine to be too soft and would likely be better served with free weights.

A few resistance constraints

The lesser resistance bands seem a little pointless (do we really need a two-pound resistance band?), and the fact that only they can stack on the rower at once is a bummer if you’re after a big-time leg workout (you can add more up top if you’re using your arms with the rower). While we didn’t experience any deterioration during our trial run, we can’t help but imagine that the resistance plates may wear down over time, loosen up, or weather in the sun should you opt to set up shop outside.

A learning curve

Those who like a structured workout may need assistance here, whether that’s through the formal app or the introductory visuals that come with the kit. Frankly, that subtle curse is also a blessing to those who like a nimble device that allows for any number of exercises targeting any and all muscle groups. The machine can do just about anything you’re after; it just takes a little getting used to. Lastly, setting up with clamps can be tricky in an older house with ornate door frames (things need to be flush) or settings with lower ceilings, but mounting the old-fashioned way is an easy fix here.

The verdict

Resistance exercise is in, and while TUT is not the only option, it’s one of the best based on high functionality, minimal setup, and a flexible design. The machine is downright fun to use and can help you along in any fitness journey you’re after. Aside from a few little hiccups and some costly additions, the trainer does wonders and essentially brings dozens of machines you might find at your gym right to your home in one decidedly sleek package. Start with the tower; you can always add the rower down the line if you want to take things to the next level.

“I met the SFedU Lyceum last year at an open day, and I was very inspired by the atmosphere of this educational institution and the activities that constantly take place here. It’s great that teachers communicate with students on an equal footing, they are always ready to help and suggest, they are attentive to absolutely every student, and it’s also nice to see that each teacher simply burns with his subject and also tells it interestingly. Being the chairman of the council of students is not only an honor, it is also a great responsibility, and I hope that this will help me gain more self-confidence, develop my leadership qualities and, of course, benefit my Lyceum in the face of its students and teachers” , – Ekaterina Marchenko shared .

Congratulations to Ekaterina on her election to a high post, as well as to all lyceum students on the holiday! We wish you excellent, interesting studies and high achievements!

The resurrection path: How a tiny Austin church funded work to help thousands | Grumet

big works gym

Beset by shrinking attendance and limited funds, Lord of Life Lutheran Church was slowly dying. Nothing seemed likely to change that.

But an even bigger question hung over this tiny Northwest Austin congregation, a close-knit community where young families had grown their faith, worshippers had become friends, and people offered prayers and casseroles when someone fell ill.

“We started to talk about, 'What will our neighbors miss if we're gone? How are we known to the people around us?'” the Rev. J. Mills told me, noting Sunday services were drawing only 15 to 35 worshippers by the end of 2021. “And that question mark started to loom so big that there was a realization that we didn't think that our neighbors would miss anything if we were gone.”

So Lord of Life did something bold. The congregation closed the church a year ago this month. They sold their valuable land in the Austin pocket of Williamson County and put the proceeds — about $4.2 million — toward an ambitious plan to fund good deeds across Texas for years to come.

It wasn’t easy. Closing the 27-year-old church felt like a death of sorts, congregants told me. But they embraced this moment as a resurrection, an ending that allows new possibilities to flower as brightly as the bluebonnets blooming at the old church site.

Much of the money went into an endowment that will provide ongoing annual funding for a range of causes: Helping children in foster care. Supporting LGBTQ+ ministries. Providing essential aid to migrants at the southern border.

“We couldn't keep Lord of Life open. Nope,” former congregant Randi Ladolcetta told me. “But we can use the millions (of dollars) to help thousands.”

Including, someday, helping about 16 families a year exit homelessness in Austin.

Embracing a greater plan

The decline in church attendance is a long-running national trend. Nearly a quarter of Americans (24%) say they attend religious services at least once a week, down 7 percentage points from a decade ago, according to polling by the Public Religion Research Institute . And the percentage of Americans who say religion is the most, or one of the most, important things to them has dropped from 72% to 53% over that decade.

The pandemic-era shift to online services might have accelerated those declines, but folks from Lord of Life pointed to other factors, too. Some families moved or stopped attending services once their kids were grown. Some drifted away when a pastor retired.

Lord of Life was always a small church, with services drawing about 75 people pre-COVID, so “it becomes very noticeable when an entire family stops coming every Sunday,” Ladolcetta said.

After Mills arrived as a transitional pastor, he led the congregation in a weekslong discernment process called Holy Fork in the Road. They talked about the different ways a faith community can be a bridge between God and God’s people. In April 2022, with heavy hearts, 85% voted to start a yearlong process to close the church and invest in other causes.

“I was crying, even though I voted to close. It was still very impactful,” said Richard Fink, who belonged to the congregation for two decades and, among other things, mowed the grassy stretches of the 10-acre property. But between the tight budget and the fatigue among the handful of volunteers shouldering church duties, he said, “We were becoming exhausted from trying to maintain that.”

Jim Tarsi, who’d been with the church since its 1996 founding, cast one of the few votes against closure, although he understood where others were coming from. He later told Mills, “I guess with a little bit of work I can resign myself to the fact that we’re closing.”

“And he told me, ‘No, don’t look at it as resigning to anything,’” Tarsi recounted to me. “‘If this is what God has in mind for the church, then that’s what it is, and work with that.’ So that really helped me see the process more positively … and as it turns out, we did a lot of great things with our assets.”

A big boost for transitional housing project

The committee dividing up the church’s money figured it would give some amount to a sister congregation, Peace Lutheran Church, which has big dreams of building a transitional housing facility for families next to its Northwest Austin sanctuary.

The facility would house four families for a few months at a time, as they wait to line up long-term housing elsewhere. The goal is to help about 16 families a year — and to serve as a model for other churches to develop facilities for people exiting homelessness .

The Lord of Life committee was so impressed by Peace Lutheran’s plan that they gave $500,000 to the project — a massive fundraising boost for a facility expected to cost $1.25 million. A plan with that kind of money is no longer aspirational. It is possible .

“It was just like, ‘ Yeah , they can do so much with that,’” Ladolcetta said. “Getting to do and give that much made (the church closure) less painful.”

She described it as a God moment, that feeling of seeing a divine plan come together.

In the year since Lord of Life closed, Mills launched a Holy Fork in the Road Ministry to counsel other Lutheran churches in the southwestern Texas region who find themselves at a difficult crossroads. A grant from Lord of Life helps fund that work.

The old church building now houses Nandgam Haveli , providing a worship space and gathering hub for a Hindu community.

Meanwhile, Fink and Tarsi have joined the faith community at Peace Lutheran. Ladolcetta said she and her family are still trying out other congregations.

They all take heart in seeing the good works flowing from their old church's dollars.

Ladolcetta has been working recently at First English Lutheran Church in Central Austin. One day the church got an email confirming it was being added to the locations in a new app showing places that are LGBTQ+-friendly.

That app is being developed by QWELL, an LGBTQ+ support organization that got a $50,000 grant from the Lord of Life church.

“It was just almost like this full-circle moment of seeing all the good that the money could do,” she said.

Another God moment.

Beyond Church Walls This is the first installment in an occasional series about Austin churches taking bold steps to address housing and homelessness in our community.

A Living Gift Lord of Life Lutheran Church gained about $4.2 million from the sale of its Northwest Austin property. When the church closed last year, the congregation gave the money to causes that collectively touch thousands of lives. The donations included:• Establishing an endowment to provide annual support to four causes: Technicolor Ministries for the LGBTQ+ community in the Lutheran Church; Eagle Pass/Frontera Ministries , which provides essential aid to migrants at the border; Reconciling Works , which helps Lutheran churches be welcoming spaces for those in the LBGTQ+ community; and Upbring , a nonprofit that provides programs related to foster care, adoption and child wellbeing.• $500,000 to Peace Lutheran Church to help build an on-site transitional housing facility for families.• $195,000 to the Southwestern Texas Synod to support Holy Fork in the Road Ministries.• $50,000 to QWELL , an organization supporting the LGBTQ+ community.• $50,000 to Texas Impact , an interfaith group that advocates on public policy issues.• $33,000 to Camp Ministries through Technicolor Ministries .• $25,000 to Texas Ramp Project , which builds ramps for people with accessibility needs.• $20,000 to Palabra de Vida Ministries , a Lutheran ministry in South Austin.• $4,800 to National Public Radio , providing business sponsor relationships for QWELL and Upbring.• $3,000 to Boy Scouts .
