How to use Live Text on iPhone to translate

• Open a photo or video , or select an image online. If the text is in a video, pause the video first.
• Use your finger to touch and hold a word within the photo, and move the grab points to adjust the selection to cover all the text you want to translate

How to copy text from an image on Android or iPhone in Google Photos

Settings may vary depending on your Android phone’s manufacturer 

• Open your Google Photos and select an image from which you want to copy the text
• Tap on the Lens icon (looks like a square with a dot in the middle) available at the bottom of the screen or click the image and scroll down and click Copy Text from Image at the bottom
• The Lens icon will take you to Google Lens
• Tap on the Text  option and select the text you want to copy by moving the blue grab points to adjust the selection to cover all the text you want to copy
• Then, click on Copy Text , and the text will be copied to your clipboard

Make sure that if you're pulling text from an image you haven't taken yourself, the photo is saved to your Gallery app or camera roll.

A new study led by Michigan State University researcher Peter Williams sheds light on the profound influence of deep geographic isolation on the evolution of mammals. Published in Nature Communications on March 28, the research reveals how long-lasting separation between continents has shaped distinct mammal communities around the globe.

“Today’s ecology was not inevitable. If there were different isolating factors long ago, we might have vastly different ecosystems today,” said Peter Williams, the lead author of the study. Williams is a research associate in the Department of Integrative Biology  and a postdoctoral researcher in MSU’s Ecology, Evolution and Behavior program, or EEB . 

While environmental factors like climate and vegetation are well-known drivers of biodiversity, the new study highlights the crucial role that isolation played for mammals.

“Think tree-dwelling mammals,” Williams said. “Despite similar climates, you’ll find koalas in Australia and squirrels in Spain.” 

What you won’t find, however, are koalas native to Spain or squirrels native to Australia.

“That distinction stems from deep-seated geographic isolation and diverging evolutionary paths long ago,” Williams said.

With this new perspective, the findings of this research don’t just satisfy curiosity about our natural world. The report holds significant implications for conservation efforts and modern ecological issues. 

“By understanding how historical isolation has shaped biodiversity, we can gain valuable insights into the delicate balance of ecosystems and develop strategies for protecting biodiversity in regions with unique evolutionary histories,” Williams said.

“In ecology, even hyperlocal problems need to incorporate regional, continental or even global processes — weather patterns, ocean currents or, in this case, deep-seated geographic barriers,” said Elise Zipkin , co-author of the study and associate professor of integrative biology. She’s also the leader of the Zipkin Quantitative Ecology Lab and director of EEB. “They all impact today’s natural world.”

Deep isolation shapes mammal evolution

Supported by the National Science Foundation, the study uses a novel approach to analyze biogeographic isolation, incorporating a continuous measure called “phylobetadiversity,” which quantifies shared evolutionary history, Williams said.

For instance, phylobetadiversity would be low when comparing Michigan with somewhere in Europe that’s also home to deer, rabbits, squirrels and the like, he said.

“Even if they aren't the same species, there is a lot of shared evolutionary history at the community level,” Williams said.

Michigan and Australia would be at the opposite ends of the phylobetadiversity spectrum.

“Australia has mostly marsupials, while in Michigan we don't have any marsupials except the opossum,” he continued. “There is very little shared evolutionary history at the community level.”

Using phylobetadiversity paints a nuanced picture of how connected different regions have been historically. 

“Isolated regions like Australia and Madagascar harbor mammal assemblages that are much less diverse than expected based on environment alone and those mammals possess unique combinations of functional traits, reflecting the distinct evolutionary paths they’ve taken,” Williams said. “It’s a fascinating idea that the biodiversity patterns we see in today’s world were not inevitable.” 

Also contributing to the study was Jedediah Brodie , the John Craighead Endowed Chair of Conservation in the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Montana.

The key factor in biodivergence for isolated mammals seems to be the duration of isolation. 

Regions like Australia, isolated for 30-35 million years, have had ample time for unique mammal lineages to evolve. In contrast, continents like North and South America, which were once separated but reconnected during the Great American Biotic Interchange 2.7 million years ago, show more convergence in their mammal communities, with similar climates selecting for similar functional traits.

Though the evolution of mammals was heavily impacted by the isolation of land masses, the study shows birds reacted quite differently.

Birds, with their greater ability to fly across vast distances, can more easily overcome geographic barriers. This constant movement and mixing of bird populations across continents has led to a homogenization of bird communities globally, with environmental factors playing a stronger role in shaping their diversity.

Interestingly, bats told a completely different story. As the only flying mammal group, bats in the Western Hemisphere, such as vampire bats and fish-eating bats, exhibit a much higher degree of functional diversity compared with their counterparts in the Eastern Hemisphere. This, the researchers suggest, is likely a consequence of their independent evolutionary trajectories shaped by the long-standing separation of landforms in the different regions. 

Unlike other mammals, most bats didn’t have the cold tolerance to traverse the Beringia land bridge that, long ago, connected Alaska and Siberia, leading to their continued isolation and modern divergent species across hemispheres.

The team at the Zipkin lab aims to continue this line of research, conducting additional studies to look further into mammalian histories and how biogeographic divides have shaped the biota on our planet.

“This is just the beginning of our journey toward a deeper understanding of the world around us,” Zipkin said.

Governor DeSantis Signs Legislation to End the Squatters Scam in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla.— Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 621, which protects property rights, provides homeowners remedies against squatting, and increases penalties on squatters.

“We are putting an end to the squatters scam in Florida,”  said Governor Ron DeSantis . “While other states are siding with the squatters, we are protecting property owners and punishing criminals looking to game the system.”

“Florida is once again leading the nation, this time in securing our state against squatters,”  said  Attorney General Ashley Moody . “Biden has allowed millions of illegal immigrants to flood across the border. After video evidence of their plan to take over homes emerged, we’re ensuring Floridians are protected from this egregious and brazen scheme. I’m grateful to Governor DeSantis for signing this important legislation into law, and to Representative Kevin Steele for carrying this bill through Session.”

Under HB 621, a property owner can request law enforcement to immediately remove a squatter from their property if the following conditions are met:

• The individual has unlawfully entered and remains on the property;
• The individual has been directed to leave the property by the owner but has not done so; and
• The individual is not a current or former tenant in a legal dispute.

In Florida, it will be quick and simple to reclaim your home from squatters, avoiding costly delays, litigation, and missed rents.

HB 621 also creates harsh penalties for those engaged in squatting and for those who encourage squatting and teach others the scam. The bill makes it:

• A first-degree misdemeanor for making a false statement in writing to obtain real property or for knowingly and willfully presenting a falsified document conveying property rights;
• A second-degree felony for any person who unlawfully occupies or trespasses in a residential dwelling and who intentionally causes $1,000 or more in damages; and
• A first-degree felony for knowingly advertising the sale or rent of a residential property without legal authority or ownership.

Anti-cop politicians should stay away from the funeral of slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, the Sergeants Benevolent Association warned Wednesday — specifically calling out City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

“Adrienne Adams, Jumaane Williams and their cohorts should stay home. They detest cops and have no appreciation for what they do. They should stay home and not pretend they are grieving. They have caused enough heartbreak and destruction,” SBA president Vincent Vallelong told The Post.

His comments echoed a scathing letter sent by the union, which represents sergeants of the NYPD, slamming anti-police council members for posting “hollow” and “untrue” statements of sympathy about 31-year-old Diller’s killing — and saying that they, too, were not wanted at the funeral Saturday.

“They are as morally responsible for PO Diller’s death as the career criminal who pulled the trigger,” the searing letter states, referring to the ex-con who police say gunned down the hero cop — the married dad of a 1-year-old boy — in Queens on Monday.

Vallelong accused the council and “many prosecutors” of being “complicit in this utter destruction of civilized society in New York,” according to the letter.

“The Council members who are vehemently and inexplicably against public safety are responsible for the carnage in the streets and the heartbreak brought about by PO Diller’s completely avoidable death,” the missive states.

Vallelong, speaking to The Post, ripped Speaker Adams specifically for not pushing back against bills targeting the NYPD, and for the way the council has handled oversight of the department.

“I’m just disgusted with how all these people are right now. They are not doing what is right. People are killed over this,” he fumed.

Members of the council “who have declared war on the police” should be the ones put under the microscope, not the other way around, Vallelong wrote in the letter, saying the council should be “investigated for every legislative mistake and misstep they make.”

Williams was one of the leading voices to “defund” the NYPD during the 2020 anti-police brutality protests that rocked the city — going as far as threatening to block then-Mayor Bill de Blasio from collecting property taxes if he didn’t freeze hiring and take cops out of schools.

While Adams opposed the defund movement four years ago, she and Williams in January spearheaded the council’s vote to reject an attempt by Mayor Eric Adams (no relation) to veto the “How Many Stops Act,” which requires cops to document the minutiae of almost all public interactions.

Critics argued that the bill will only make New Yorkers “less safe on the streets” while burying cops in a mountain of paperwork.

“When you speak to the young people in our communities and ask them about their experiences with police stops, they will tell you how invasive and scary they can be. Our communities are traumatized because of these stops,” she said when defending the bill.

In the wake of Diller’s killing, Adams, Williams and other proponents of the bill took to social media to share their condolences, with the speaker writing that she was “heartbroken” by the tragedy.

“We all deserve to be safe and return to our families each day. This senseless violence must end,” she added.

“Officer Diller came to work today as he did every day, prepared to risk his safety to protect the city, and lost his life in service to our community,” Williams posted on X.

“I join all New Yorkers to honor his sacrifice, and uplift his life and memory,” he wrote.

Vallelong, however, was incensed by the comments.

“As I read the news and social media posts written by many New York City Council members, it enrages me how hollow and untrue their words of sympathy and empathy are,” he wrote in the letter.

“Despite their admonitions to the contrary, the ‘leadership’ in the Council has failed city residents, workers, and visitors at every turn. They are blinded by their own hatred and twisted ideology,” he claimed.

Members of the council will doubtlessly show up to Diller’s funeral, “shed a few crocodile tears” and use the event as a “good photo opportunity,” Vallelong charged in the missive.

“Their presence is more than a distraction. It is a stain on the legacy of a true hero who made the ultimate sacrifice,” he wrote. “The sad reality is, we don’t want them there.”

Asked about the mayor and Gov. Kathy Hochul, the union boss said they would be welcome at the funeral, set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church in Massapequa.

“We all know who they are, we all know who the cop haters are,” he noted to The Post.

A council spokesperson said in a statement: “Our city is united in mourning the loss of a father, husband, son and public servant, whose life was taken by senseless violence. It’s unfortunate that some would rather use this tragedy to launch political attacks that seek to divide us.”

In the wake of the slaying, the mayor had called out the state’s revolving-door criminal justice system for allowing recidivist offenders to be out on the streets, referring to alleged shooter Guy Rivera, 34, an ex-con with 21 past arrests, and Lindy Jones, 41, the driver of the car he was in, who had been busted at least 14 times previously.

“We’ve always had a problem with recidivism, it’s always been a problem but we’ve really never zeroed in on it with case after case,” Adams told reporters.

New Yorkers have gone out of their way to pay tribute to the fallen cop, whose wake is Thursday.

What to know about the fatal shooting of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller:

• Diller, 31, was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens, on March 25, 2024.
• Suspect Guy Rivera opened fire on Diller on Monday evening after the cop approached the vehicle Rivera was in for parking in front of a bus stop.
• Diller was shot once in the stomach below his bulletproof vest. The married father of a 1-year-old boy was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
• Rivera was wounded when Diller’s partner returned fire. The suspect has 21 prior arrests and was found to have a shiv stored in his rectum during the shooting — in apparent anticipation of being sent to jail again.
• Lindy Jones, the ex-con behind the wheel of the car during the shooting, was also arrested after a second gun was found in his car.
• Mayor Eric Adams has renewed his calls for Albany to address criminal recidivism following the shooting involving two suspects with lengthy criminal records.

At the time of the deadly shooting, Rivera had 21 prior arrests, mostly for drug-related crimes and assault.

He was spotted by cops Tuesday evening in a double-parked Kia Soul alongside Jones, 41, another career criminal, whose nickname is “Killa.”

The pair were approached by NYPD “quality of life” officers, including Diller, outside a T-Mobile store.

By Wednesday morning, there was a sizable makeshift memorial outside the 101st Precinct, including a smattering of candles, flowers and balloons.

One floral arrangement had a message from PS 104, which read “Officer Dillon a Hero,” flanked by hearts.

“I used to be a cop … one of my friends died,” one particularly distraught man told The Post while he dropped off his own flowers.

Also on Wednesday, the Survivors of the Shield, a group of NYPD widows and widowers, issued notice for a fundraiser to support Diller’s wife, Stephanie, and their young son.

“We know what Stephanie and Ryan are going through because we’ve all been there,” the announcement read.

I am proud that my Administration has stood for justice from the start, working to ensure that the LGBTQI+ community can live openly, in safety, with dignity and respect.  I am proud to have appointed transgender leaders to my Administration and to have ended the ban on transgender Americans serving openly in our military.  I am proud to have signed historic Executive Orders that strengthen civil rights protections in housing, employment, health care, education, the justice system, and more.  I am proud to have signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law, ensuring that every American can marry the person they love. 

Transgender Americans are part of the fabric of our Nation.  Whether serving their communities or in the military, raising families or running businesses, they help America thrive.  They deserve, and are entitled to, the same rights and freedoms as every other American, including the most fundamental freedom to be their true selves.  But extremists are proposing hundreds of hateful laws that target and terrify transgender kids and their families — silencing teachers; banning books; and even threatening parents, doctors, and nurses with prison for helping parents get care for their children.  These bills attack our most basic American values:  the freedom to be yourself, the freedom to make your own health care decisions, and even the right to raise your own child.  It is no surprise that the bullying and discrimination that transgender Americans face is worsening our Nation’s mental health crisis, leading half of transgender youth to consider suicide in the past year.  At the same time, an epidemic of violence against transgender women and girls, especially women and girls of color, continues to take too many lives.  Let me be clear:  All of these attacks are un-American and must end.  No one should have to be brave just to be themselves.  

At the same time, my Administration is working to stop the bullying and harassment of transgender children and their families.  The Department of Justice has taken action to push back against extreme and un-American State laws targeting transgender youth and their families and the Department of Justice is partnering with law enforcement and community groups to combat hate and violence.  My Administration is also providing dedicated emergency mental health support through our nationwide suicide and crisis lifeline — any LGBTQI+ young person in need can call “988” and press “3” to speak with a counselor trained to support them.  We are making public services more accessible for transgender Americans, including with more inclusive passports and easier access to Social Security benefits.  There is much more to do.  I continue to call on the Congress to pass the Equality Act, to codify civil rights protections for all LGBTQI+ Americans.

Today, we send a message to all transgender Americans:  You are loved.  You are heard.  You are understood.  You belong.  You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 31, 2024, as Transgender Day of Visibility.  I call upon all Americans to join us in lifting up the lives and voices of transgender people throughout our Nation and to work toward eliminating violence and discrimination based on gender identity.

To the editor: Donald Trump has moved on from trading cards and sneakers to selling Bibles during Holy Week. ( Trump promotes ‘God Bless the USA Bible,’ selling for $59.99 , March 26.)

This is disgusting. Just as Jesus drove the money changers from the Temple, can all of us unite to drive Trump from American politics?

Fast copy in Dataflows Gen2

• Data Factory

Dataflows help with ingesting and transforming data. With the introduction of dataflow scale-out with the SQL DW compute, we are able to transform your data at scale. However, to do this at scale, your data needs to be ingested first.

With the introduction of Fast copy, you can ingest terabytes of data with the easy experience of dataflows, but with the scalable backend of Pipeline’s Copy activity.

After enabling this capability. Dataflows will automatically switch the backend when data size exceeds 100 MB without needing to change anything during authoring of the dataflows.

After the refresh of the dataflow, you can easily check in the Refresh History experience if Fast copy was used during your run by looking at the entity status in the Refresh History.

With “Force Fast copy”, the user can start a ‘debugging’ session. When “Force Fast copy” is not used on the specific query, the dataflow refresh will be cancelled, and you do not have to wait until the refresh times out.

Using the Fast copy indicators in the Query Settings’ Steps pane, you can easily check if your query can run with Fast copy.

Data sources currently supported

Fast copy is currently only supported for the following data source connectors:

• Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2
• Azure Blob Storage
• Azure SQL Database

Note : On-premises data gateway and VNET data gateway are not supported yet. For Blob and Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2, only parquet and csv files are supported.

The Copy activity only supports a few transformations when connecting to a file source:

• Combine files
• Select or remove columns
• Change data types
• Rename a column

Additional transformations can be applied by splitting the ingestion and transformation steps into separate queries so that DW compute can be leveraged after your data has been ingested into OneLake.

For Azure SQL database and PostgeSQL as a source, any transformation that can fold into a native query is supported.

When directly loading the query to an output destination, the following is supported:

If you want to use another output destination, you can stage the query first and reference the query.

Prerequisites

• Fabric capacity
• Only .csv and .parquet files are supported.
• 1 M rows if using Azure SQL db

How to use fast copy

Navigate to a premium workspace and create a Dataflow Gen2 using the appropriate Fabric endpoint.

Inside the Power Query editor, select the Options button and turn on Fast copy in the Scale tab.

Go to Get Data and select Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 as a source and fill in the details for your container. Then use the Combine files functionality.

To ensure Fast copy can be leveraged, only apply supported transformations listed at the beginning of this article. If you want to apply other transformations, stage the data first and reference the query. Make any additional transformations on the dependent query.

Optionally, you can set the “Force fast copy” option on the query you want to test. To do so, right-click on the query and select “Require fast copy”.

Optionally, set Lakehouse as output destination. For any other destination, stage and reference your query first.

You can use the query folding indicators and see if the Fast copy indicators are in place so you can run your query with Fast Copy.

Once ready, you can publish the dataflow. Once the refresh has completed, you can check if Fast copy was used in the Refresh history experience.
