Ready to apply for the dream fashion position you’ve just found? 

You might find yourself busy trying to build a great resume, but what you probably didn’t know is that together with your CV, there is also something else you need to start writing to apply for a job or internship in fashion: a cover letter. 

While a cover letter may be optional for some positions, it’s usually a good idea to include one in any application you submit. Why? Because the fashion industry is hiring for potential . Recruiters want to know more about your personality, and the reason why you want to get the job and be part of the team, which is something you can only express through a cover letter.

Fashion recruiters use cover letters to get a sense of how well each candidate would fit in with their company culture, so they are not only concerned about your education, experience, and skills (because many people have them and you can use them for multiple jobs) but also your mindset and values, what type of person and professional you are .

Indeed, just checking all the boxes is not enough to get the fashion job of your dreams . Many hiring decisions are made by a gut feeling and the impression of the candidate. So, my advice is to go beyond the technical part of listing your background and skills in the resume, and tell more about yourself and what you like about that specific brand and position in the cover letter.

I am going to explain the difference between a resume and a cover letter towards the end of this article, but first, I want to share with you a few tips on how to write the perfect fashion cover letter.

How To Write A Fashion Cover Letter 

What’s a cover letter .

A cover letter is a half-page document that goes alongside your resume when applying for any job . Think of it as your introduction to the company and the recruiter. It’s as if you were talking to them to introduce yourself, but it’s written. You use the cover letter in your fashion job applications to add more information about yourself and your skills and why you want this particular job at this specific company. Your fashion cover letter gives you the chance to make a difference in your application by telling your story, motivation, and passion for the brand and the position. 

What to include in a fashion cover letter?

Contact details .

The first thing you want to mention in your cover letter is your contact details. They usually go on the top left corner where you list: your full name, address, phone number, and email. Then, on the next line on the right, you mention the person you are writing to, the company, and the address. Below, add the date and city you are writing from, for example: London, February 4th, 2024.

The title 

After your contact details, add a line where you mention the name of the job offer for example, “Fashion editorial assistant at [Company Name]”.

Address your fashion cover letter to the right person 

This may sound trivial, but it is so important to open your cover letter by greeting your recipient by his or her name by writing Dear Ms or Mr [name] instead of a generic Dear Sir or Madam . This detail can say a lot about you, how well you did your research about the company, and how serious you are about applying for this job. If you don’t address the person by his or her actual name, the recruiter will think you didn’t do your research.

More than a year ago I opened a fashion editorial assistant position here at Glam Observer, and I didn’t consider any application with a generic cover letter that said: To Whom It May Concern . In the job description, I mentioned the Editorial Assistant would have worked alongside me, so addressing the cover letter to me Dear Giada , was an important detail that showed me if someone really knew about the company Glam Observer and read carefully the job description (aka if someone is attentive to detail).

Spend your time finding the person to whom you should address your fashion cover letter. Sometimes you will find the name of the recruiter directly in the vacancy if you are applying on LinkedIn, for example. In other cases, if that information is not specified and you cannot find it by yourself by searching on LinkedIn, it’s better to say “Dear Dior Team”, or “Dear Vogue Team” than to say “To whom it may concern”. 

Write an introduction

Now, let’s start writing the body of your cover letter. In the first paragraph, aka your introduction, you should briefly introduce yourself but first, start with a mention of the company and how you found out about the role. Say something like “As an admirer of [company name], I was excited to see a Fashion Internship open”. This part should be brief and make the reader curious to read the rest of the letter, so try finding a way to draw their attention.

Say why you want to work in this fashion company

Following the introduction, you need to explain in the second paragraph why you want this specific position at this specific fashion company. I really insist on the “why” , because this is the question that the recruiter will have in mind while reading your application: why is this person applying, and why should I hire him/her? Make sure you provide the answers to that question because there is nothing worse than hanging with this question in the air.

Even if you are applying to other jobs, the recruiter still wants to feel special, and they are looking for people who are genuinely passionate about the job and the company , so you should demonstrate that. You can mention that you share the same values, that you like the brand (and why), and that the tasks needed for that role are related to your studies and work history, or that this is the career path you want to take. Remember that this is a personalized fashion cover letter, so share your personal reasons and motivation to get that job or internship. You know you can’t just say “Because I love fashion” , right? 

Why are you the ideal candidate for this fashion job?

In the third paragraph, you should talk about what makes you the ideal candidate for the job. This is your opportunity to explain how the skills you added to your resume apply to this position. Highlight the relevant skills and connect them to the responsibilities that you will have or develop in a particular work experience . List those skills in bullet points and give concrete examples of how you’ve acquired them. Remember: don’t make the cover letter about you, but try to look from the company’s perspective by answering what added value can you bring to the company.

Write a conclusion

Finally, you have to conclude your cover letter. You can sum up your letter and add some final thoughts by saying that you could be a good fit for each other. Thank the reader for his/her time to read your application and add a sentence or two with a call to action , saying something like you are looking forward to hearing from him/her and that you would be happy to provide more information during a job interview . 

Structure of a fashion cover letter

The cover letter should always contain an introduction, a development part, and a conclusion.

Note that as far as the development part is concerned, you can mix and organize the information in paragraphs 2 and 3 as you wish, as long as your cover letter answers the core questions of why you want this job and why they should hire you. 

Tips to write a good fashion cover letter

Write a personalized fashion cover letter.

While I do always suggest tweaking your resume anytime you apply for a new job by playing with the keywords of the job, the place where you can really boost the personalization of a job application is a cover letter. However, if you are using the same cover letter to apply for multiple fashion jobs and internships, it means it’s not personalized enough and therefore it won’t be effective.

It’s absolutely necessary that you write a new cover letter anytime you apply for a new job so you can personalize it to the brand. This means researching the company, understanding the employer’s needs and job requirements (so you should read the job description carefully) and expressing your reasons to join that specific company and role. By sharing your reasons and motivation to join that particular company and position, your application will be perceived as more personal and genuine, and the recruiter will feel more connected to you. As a result, they may invite you for a job interview.

Research the fashion company

Many fashion job applicants “lose points” in their application by not showing they did research about the company they are applying to. Truth is, you can personalize the cover letter only when you know everything about the company.

Start by doing some research about the brand to collect as much information as possible that can be used in your cover letter to show your knowledge about the brand. Companies want to know that you know their history and understand their mission.

Go online and visit the fashion brand’s websites and specifically pages such as Values, Our Company, Our brand, etc. You will find all the information you need there.

Build a clear structure

A good cover is recognizable by a clear structure. It should be divided into several paragraphs as explained above so that the reader can follow your ideas more easily. You can use ready cover letter samples to help you with that. I have prepared different cover letter templates in my “Break into the fashion industry” course.

Another important thing is to check the cover letter for any typos, grammatical errors, and spelling mistakes. Sending an application filled with different kinds of mistakes doesn’t look professional, and it can even be a turning point in the recruiter’s decision not to invite you to a job interview. So make sure you don’t give the wrong impression because even though you may look like an excellent candidate based on your skills, experience, and what you say in general in your application, spelling mistakes can be penalizing. 

Be concise and go straight to the point. There is a lot you may want to say, but you just have half a page to do that. Oh yes, did we say it had to be half/one page long? Think that the recruiter receives 500 applications on average, so he doesn’t have the time to read long resumes and cover letters. So do not beat around the bush, and make his job easier. Plus, being concise is a great skill to have in general in your job. 

Do not repeat the same information as in your fashion CV

Keep in mind that a cover letter should not be a repetition of your resume , but present new and the most exciting information that will catch the recruiter’s attention and make you stand out among other applicants. Use the cover letter to add context, examples, and real experiences, to explain what you wrote on your resume. Remember that the hiring manager already saw your resume, so by repeating the same information, you’re missing the chance to tell them something else that can get you the job.

All that tips taken into account, my last advice for you is to be yourself. Even if you are writing about technical things related to the job and your skills, try to show through your cover letter the person who is behind it. 

Fashion Cover Letter Example

This is an example of what you could write to apply for a job or internship in fashion PR, but you can follow the same structure for any role in fashion.

This is just the development part to give you an idea of how to explain your motivations and skills, so don’t forget to add an introduction and a conclusion paragraphs when you write your own fashion cover letter.

Where should I send a fashion cover letter?

I recommend you write your fashion cover letter on a separate PDF document that you can upload online alongside your resume when you apply directly through a job board or attach to your email if you are emailing your favorite companies.

When you email companies and people directly, the cover letter can also go in the body of the email directly.

How to create a fashion video cover letter?

Sending a written cover letter will already give you bonus points aka enhance your chances of getting noticed by fashion recruiters. But there is another trick to stand out among a pool of applications: sending a video cover letter.

You can send a video cover letter both when you apply for a fashion job/internship that the company has posted but also when you send a cold application.

Don’t look at the video cover letter as a long presentation but rather a short introduction about yourself and the first touchpoint to connecting with the recruiter. Seeing and hearing you will indeed make your application more personal, and as I already said, personalizing your application/cover letter is the key to landing a fashion job or internship.

To keep it simple and save the recruiter’s time, your video cover letter should be as short as 1 minute . Briefly explain who you are, what you do (studying, interning, working…), what you admire about that company, why you want to work there, and why you are a good fit for that fashion job/internship.

You can record a video cover letter on Zoom. However, I do not recommend attaching your video directly to the email because if the file is too big your emails might end in spam or never be delivered. So you can use Loom (it’s free) or another program that can create a link with your video and you can paste it into your email.

The difference between a resume and a cover letter

While having a brilliant resume is the first step to landing a job in fashion, it is no longer enough , as companies expect more from candidates in this extremely competitive industry. See the cover letter as an extension to your resume, as you explain the skills you added to your resume with concrete examples. While the resume is schematic and cold, the cover letter should show your personality, enthusiasm, and interest that make you the ideal candidate for the job.

And because of this different kind of content and approach, a good cover letter can immediately build a relationship with whoever is reading it.

Many hiring decisions are in the end based on a gut feeling and the connection that a recruiter feels with someone, so your cover letter is your first step to start building a relationship with the hiring manager that you can then strengthen during the job interview. 

When you are at the beginning of your career in fashion, your resume is normally short, so the cover letter will be even more important to land your first job or internship . All of your passion for the fashion industry and the job or internship you are applying to must shine through in your application, and a cover letter is your best ally at that. 

The truth is, the recruiters know that if you’re applying for internships it’s because you don’t have that much actual experience behind you so they will focus on other ways to decide whether someone is worth inviting over for a job interview. They base their decision on your application strategies (are you using unconventional strategies showing them you think out of the box?) and other documents such as your cover letter. So if you are a student or recent graduate, bet on your cover letter more than your CV and use it to convince a recruiter that you have a strong passion for the job and the industry. Show them your why. You might not have that much actual experience behind you, but your cover letter could blow your future boss out of the water and put you straight on the interview shortlist. 

A well-written cover letter can help you stand out from the rest of the competition and it’s actually the document that can make you end in the shortlist of those they want to interview.

Hence why you should always, always include a cover letter, even when it’s not requested. 

The cover letter is also useful if you don’t have a degree in fashion, or want to make a career transition into this industry to explain why you want to work in fashion now.

So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.

Here are some examples you can use.

  • I am interested in applying for the role of Fashion Designer with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Ideally your cover letter should be around 4-8 sentences long – anything longer will risk losing the attention of time-strapped recruiters and hiring managers .

Essentially you need to include just enough information to persuade the reader to open up your CV, where the in-depth details will sit.

Sign off professionally

To finish off your cover note, add a professional signature to the bottom, stating your important contact details and information.

This not only provides recruiters with multiple means of contacting you, but it also adds a nice professional appearance to the cover letter, which shows that you know how to conduct yourself in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address

Second, make sure that the tone of voice you use matches the company culture.

And last but not least, try to convey your enthusiasm for the position and the field. This will give your text a personal touch.

But how can you make your cover letter grab every hiring manager's attention? Let’s see…

How to choose the most suitable salutation and make a good impression

In general, the salutation you use depends on the tone of voice you’ve decided to go for but also on the company culture.

However, it’s always a good idea to address your letter to the person responsible for the recruitment process. If you don’t know their name, try to find it out. And only if that proves to be impossible, choose a generic salutation.

Here are some phrases you can use (note that some of them require you to know the hiring manager's name):

  • Dear Ms. Smith,
  • Dear Peter Roberts,
  • To the [company name] Recruitment Team,
  • Dear Hiring Manager

You wonder what the key to good introductions is? (Moderate) Creativity!

You’ve probably heard that many people out there have started using phrases like “I found your job advert on platform X and decided to apply”, right?

And what’s wrong with such phrases, you may ask. They’re outdated and they definitely won't make you stand out, to say the least.

So go for something different. Begin your cover letter by sharing your excitement about the company, the position, and even the field.

Combine your soft and hard skills for an unbeatable match!

Although you’ve probably listed all your skills on your resume, it’s worth mentioning them again, but by telling a personal story. Focusing on your soft skills and leaving most hard ones behind is also a good idea.

Maybe you want to mention the things that help you overcome setbacks? Or the things that help you reach your goals? It doesn’t really matter what you choose, as long as you link it back to the specific job requirements.

Naturally, if the job advert mentions some hard skills explicitly, you should do the same in your cover letter. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen resumes and cover letters for certain keywords.

Show how passionate you are to join the company

Proving that you’re familiar with the company is a great way to win the recruiter’s heart. It shows that you’ve taken some time for research and that you’re attentive to detail.

What’s more, it will also help you find out the issues at hand. This way, you can link your own skills and qualifications to some potential challenges the company might have to deal with in the future.

Finish your cover letter with a call to action

The last part of your cover letter should briefly sum up everything you’ve said so far. It should also express your gratitude for the hiring manager’s time and consideration.

The tone of the closing line depends on two things – your personal preference and the company culture. Don’t go for overly creative phrases if the company you’re applying for relies on strictly corporate language.

There’s no question of whether you can hand in your resume without your cover letter. In fact, the cover letter is the first thing a human employer will look at before your resume.

But before we get into how to write your own, why don’t we start by looking at a…

Preparing to write your fashion cover letter.

Before we get into actually writing a cover letter, there are a few points we should go over.

Following them will make your fashion cover letter more effective. Omitting them will mean creating a document that will do no good to your chances of getting an interview.

Which brings me to the first point…

Is a Fashion Cover Letter Necessary?

It may be a surprise, since so much more emphasis is put on the resume, but a cover letter is actually read before the resume. So quite contrary to what may be said about using an out-of-this-world resume template in order to stand out, this is actually the job of the cover letter.

Especially where human beings are concerned.

I like to explain it like this.

A resume is like a basic profile that outlines your general information namley your education, past experience (or the lack thereof) etc.

Your cover letter is (literally) your 15-seconds-of-fame for you to say something that will make your candidacy truly memorable.

And yes, it is in the form of an actual letter. As in Dear Anna Wintour..

So What Makes A Good Cover Letter?

53% of hiring managers feel a resume is not enough to get noticed.

Apart from a basic structure that we can follow, you’ll also want to…

  • Put effort into writing it: seems pretty obvious , but if I have seen rushed resumes, then I have seen lightening quick cover letters.
  • Keep it short: I’d recommend 250 words at most. This is a cover letter not a love letter. Make your point and be done with it.
  • Make it scannable: use bullets and short  paragraphs in your cover letter 
  • Include a Call To Action (CTA): direct the reader with next steps i.e., call you, look at your portfolio etc. and make it easier for them by making this an active link.

Now let’s get into the…

Structure Of A Fashion Cover Letter

Fashion Cover Letter Structure

Your fashion cover letter will consist of the following parts. Namely…

  • Heading/header
  • Salutation/greeting
  • Introduction/opening lines
  • Body of the letter
  • Closing Paragraph/Call to action and

These sections will form your basic cover letter layout or structure as shown in the image above.

Also note, your fashion cover letter should be formatted to look like it belongs with the corresponding resume. Making use of a similar header style and colouring for example. Mose templates will take care of that, so we can focus on the content of our documents.

 Now let’s learn how to complete each part.

Writing Your Cover Letter Heading

Your cover letter heading consists of…

  • Your contact information
  • The date you're sending this letter
  • The receiver’s contact information

Your contact information will probably form the most obvious part of the formatting that you pulled from the resume.

Then will follow the date , probably of the day that the cover letter and resume are being sent.

Then the receiver’s contact information. Just like with your resume, this may all seem like very basic information. But it will also be your challenge.

Did you take the time to use the specified address? Or go the extra mile to clarify to which address job applications should be sent?

Small but significant details like that are tell-tale signs of whether or not a candidate is as detail oriented as they might claim.

Writing Your Cover Letter Salutation/Greeting

Your cover letter salutation is the line that goes Dear …

In theory you would want to use the name of the person who is in charge of hiring. This is much more personal. Sometimes, usually in smaller companies, this person may include their name in the job ad.

For larger companies, it’s usually a wild goose chase trying to find that person. It’s worth the effort, if it yield’s anything. But I wouldn’t wait on any responses for too long - while others hand in their resumes.

So what should you write if you can’t find a name?

Dear Hiring Manager: is the new favourite.

Dear Human Resources Manager: is not as good as this person may likely be managing the department, not necessarily screening new hires.

To Whom It May Concern: is so out of date, it doesn’t know what the pandemic is. Avoid that one.

Writing Your Cover Letter Opening Lines/Introduction

This is where you actually start your cover letter. And I’ll stray from some of the more common advice I‘ve heard from other resume writers.

Ideally, you’d want to strike up some kind of connection to this company. That is to say, if you have been networking and such, you would have heard about this job from so-and-so.

Say for example you were at a job fair. Or a company representative made a presentation at your school and mentioned internship positions.

Your best way to start your cover letter would be like…

[First & Last Name of Contact] recommended I contact you regarding the fashion intern position in your company.

Yes. It’s all about name dropping. That’s why it’s more effective to have a targeted job search rather than applying to every position under the sun.

Career Coach’s Notes: This is the point where I would tell you that no matter how “desperate you are for a job” you’ll get much better results by slowing down, taking a breath and being more deliberate about your job search. Being able to claim a connection to a company means you’re doing more than searching Indeed for jobs. It also means your networking is working. Details like that set you apart from other candidates.

In the event that you cannot make such a connection, we’ll have to settle for the next best thing.

Open your cover letter by informing the reader of how you found out about their job opening. It’s not as strong as having a personal connection to the company. But it will let them know which of their marketing streams are working. Which they’ll appreciate.

So, what does that look like?

The fashion stylist position posted in your LinkedIn feed on July 5 instantly drew my attention…

But you’re opening statement isn’t quite done!

Now you need to add a line in there that shows you’ve done your research about this company. This’ll usually take the form of some statement of flattery of some sort…

  • Mention some news story where the company was featured
  • Talk about the company’s goals in how they are handling the new work from home conditions
  • Say something that will let the hiring manager know this isn’t just your 101st job application and you have no idea why your writing letters anymore.

But here is another tip I’ve picked up.

Tip: In some job ads, they leave specific instructions for the applicant to follow. For example, Tell us why you want to work for this company. Or Complete this sample assignment. Since those specific instructions where left, you’d like to make a statement that alludes to completing those instructions.

Writing Your Body Of The Cover Letter

By now, you’ve set up your letter pretty well. Now we get to the core of things.  In the body of the cover letter, you want to be very direct about why you are a good fit for this role.

To do this, I like to pull from the skills section of the resume and take 3 skills – two technical and one transferable. I take these 3 skills and turn them into bullet points that showcase you understand the majour demands of this role and that you are up to the challenge.

So this is what the body of my cover letter would sound like…

My Social Media, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Time Management skills make me a strong candidate for this role.

  • Social Media: ideated and created visual and video posts customized for Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook increasing page followers by at least 1000 followers in the first month
  • SEO: explored winnable keywords and incorporated optimization best practices into content that has achieved top 10 Google rankings for over 50 competitive keywords.
  • Time management: researched, wrote, edited and uploaded over 1000-word articles in 3 working days or less.

A few points to remember here:

  • Go for the kill: be direct about what you bring to the table. No need to beat around the bush
  • Bullet points: Use bullet points to make this vital section scannable. I like to put the skill in bold type for greater impact
  • Verb tenses: the powerful -ed tense that is carried through from your resume
  • Power words: after the colon comes a verb. No need for full on sentences here.

Writing Your Cover Letter Closing Paragraph/Call To Action

At this point, the employer should be itching to hire you. So, make it easy for them with a Call To Action, presenting their next steps.

Politely mention how you look forward to hearing from them by a certain time. Mind that you will let them call you, not the other way around. But the invisible deadline will silently let them know you’re not waiting by the phone for them.

Then leave active links to your contact details and/or portfolio.

For example…

At your convenience, I look forward to speaking with you next week. I’m available for interviews Monday through Friday between 9.00 am to 12.00 pm Eastern time.

Writing Your Cover Letter Signature

And your cover letter is done! Sign off with a…

  • Sincerely Yours
  • Yours Truly

In the next line type your name as it appears on your resume.

Tip : I like to have a branded signature by including my job title in the third line.

6 Fashion Cover Letter Killers

And now a few words on what not to do on your cover letter.

  • Addressed it to the wrong person : when you’re sending out several job applications in a day, things can get mixed up.
  • Typos : spellcheck, read it aloud and check it again.
  • Canned responses: I shudder to think about the cover letters that have been copied from something someone saw online. The cover letter, just like the resume, must be tailored to the job post that is being applied to.
  • Too long and cluttered: Best to keep the letter short and make use of white space. Also make it is scannable with bullet points.
  • Overly aggressive tone: While you should be direct and toot your own horn, endeavour not to go overboard. “I’ll call you...” or “I know you’ll be impressed…” is taking things to far.

Should My Fashion Cover Letter Be ATS Optimized?

Screening resumes & cover letters is commonplace in hiring today. This is why it can’t hurt to include keywords in your fashion cover letter.

However, I would keep in mind that the cover letter is more for the sake of a human being. So I wouldn’t jump through linguistic hoops for the sake of optimization.

The best sections to optimize your fashion cover letter are…

  • in the resume headline you pulled from your resume
  • bullet points highlighting your skills and
  • anywhere else that it makes good sense to include a keyword or two.

Drawing To A Close

Your resume and cover letter go hand in hand. It’s a common misconception that the resume carries more weight.

As a result many job seekers hand in their resumes without a cover letter. This single detail of including a fashion cover letter could set you apart from the majority of candidates.

How to Write a Cover Letter That Will Get You a Job

I ’ve read thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of cover letters in my career. If you’re thinking that sounds like really boring reading, you’re right. What I can tell you from enduring that experience is that most cover letters are terrible — and not only that, but squandered opportunities. When a cover letter is done well, it can significantly increase your chances of getting an interview, but the vast majority fail that test.

So let’s talk about how to do cover letters right.

First, understand the point of a cover letter.

The whole idea of a cover letter is that it can help the employer see you as more than just your résumé. Managers generally aren’t hiring based solely on your work history; your experience is crucial, yes, but they’re also looking for someone who will be easy to work with, shows good judgment, communicates well, possesses strong critical thinking skills and a drive to get things done, complements their current team, and all the other things you yourself probably want from your co-workers. It’s tough to learn much about those things from job history alone, and that’s where your cover letter comes in.

Whatever you do, don’t just summarize your résumé.

The No. 1 mistake people make with cover letters is that they simply use them to summarize their résumé. This makes no sense — hiring managers don’t need a summary of your résumé! It’s on the very next page! They’re about to see it as soon as they scroll down. And if you think about it, your entire application is only a few pages (in most cases, a one- or two-page résumé and a one-page cover letter) — why would you squander one of those pages by repeating the content of the others? And yet, probably 95 percent of the cover letters I see don’t add anything new beyond the résumé itself (and that’s a conservative estimate).

Instead, your cover letter should go beyond your work history to talk about things that make you especially well-suited for the job. For example, if you’re applying for an assistant job that requires being highly organized and you neurotically track your household finances in a detailed, color-coded spreadsheet, most hiring managers would love to know that because it says something about the kind of attention to detail you’d bring to the job. That’s not something you could put on your résumé, but it can go in your cover letter.

Or maybe your last boss told you that you were the most accurate data processor she’d ever seen, or came to rely on you as her go-to person whenever a lightning-fast rewrite was needed. Maybe your co-workers called you “the client whisperer” because of your skill in calming upset clients. Maybe you’re regularly sought out by more senior staff to help problem-solve, or you find immense satisfaction in bringing order to chaos. Those sorts of details illustrate what you bring to the job in a different way than your résumé does, and they belong in your cover letter.

If you’re still stumped, pretend you’re writing an email to a friend about why you’d be great at the job. You probably wouldn’t do that by stiffly reciting your work history, right? You’d talk about what you’re good at and how you’d approach the work. That’s what you want here.

You don’t need a creative opening line.

If you think you need to open the letter with something creative or catchy, I am here to tell you that you don’t. Just be simple and straightforward:

• “I’m writing to apply for your X position.”

• “I’d love to be considered for your X position.”

• “I’m interested in your X position because …”

• “I’m excited to apply for your X position.”

That’s it! Straightforward is fine — better, even, if the alternative is sounding like an aggressive salesperson.

Show, don’t tell.

A lot of cover letters assert that the person who wrote it would excel at the job or announce that the applicant is a skillful engineer or a great communicator or all sorts of other subjective superlatives. That’s wasted space — the hiring manager has no reason to believe it, and so many candidates claim those things about themselves that most managers ignore that sort of self-assessment entirely. So instead of simply declaring that you’re great at X (whatever X is), your letter should demonstrate that. And the way you do that is by describing accomplishments and experiences that illustrate it.

Here’s a concrete example taken from one extraordinarily effective cover-letter makeover that I saw. The candidate had originally written, “I offer exceptional attention to detail, highly developed communication skills, and a talent for managing complex projects with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and multitask.” That’s pretty boring and not especially convincing, right? (This is also exactly how most people’s cover letters read.)

In her revised version, she wrote this instead:

“In addition to being flexible and responsive, I’m also a fanatic for details — particularly when it comes to presentation. One of my recent projects involved coordinating a 200-page grant proposal: I proofed and edited the narratives provided by the division head, formatted spreadsheets, and generally made sure that every line was letter-perfect and that the entire finished product conformed to the specific guidelines of the RFP. (The result? A five-year, $1.5 million grant award.) I believe in applying this same level of attention to detail to tasks as visible as prepping the materials for a top-level meeting and as mundane as making sure the copier never runs out of paper.”

That second version is so much more compelling and interesting — and makes me believe that she really is great with details.

If there’s anything unusual or confusing about your candidacy, address it in the letter.

Your cover letter is your chance to provide context for things that otherwise might seem confusing or less than ideal to a hiring manager. For example, if you’re overqualified for the position but are excited about it anyway, or if you’re a bit underqualified but have reason to think you could excel at the job, address that up front. Or if your background is in a different field but you’re actively working to move into this one, say so, talk about why, and explain how your experience will translate. Or if you’re applying for a job across the country from where you live because you’re hoping to relocate to be closer to your family, let them know that.

If you don’t provide that kind of context, it’s too easy for a hiring manager to decide you’re the wrong fit or applying to everything you see or don’t understand the job description and put you in the “no” pile. A cover letter gives you a chance to say, “No, wait — here’s why this could be a good match.”

Keep the tone warm and conversational.

While there are some industries that prize formal-sounding cover letters — like law — in most fields, yours will stand out if it’s warm and conversational. Aim for the tone you’d use if you were writing to a co-worker whom you liked a lot but didn’t know especially well. It’s okay to show some personality or even use humor; as long as you don’t go overboard, your letter will be stronger for it.

Don’t use a form letter.

You don’t need to write every cover letter completely from scratch, but if you’re not customizing it to each job, you’re doing it wrong. Form letters tend to read like form letters, and they waste the chance to speak to the specifics of what this employer is looking for and what it will take to thrive in this particular job.

If you’re applying for a lot of similar jobs, of course you’ll end up reusing language from one letter to the next. But you shouldn’t have a single cover letter that you wrote once and then use every time you apply; whatever you send should sound like you wrote it with the nuances of this one job in mind.

A good litmus test is this: Could you imagine other applicants for this job sending in the same letter? If so, that’s a sign that you haven’t made it individualized enough to you and are probably leaning too heavily on reciting your work history.

No, you don’t need to hunt down the hiring manager’s name.

If you read much job-search advice, at some point you’ll come across the idea that you need to do Woodward and Bernstein–level research to hunt down the hiring manager’s name in order to open your letter with “Dear Matilda Jones.” You don’t need to do this; no reasonable hiring manager will care. If the name is easily available, by all means, feel free to use it, but otherwise “Dear Hiring Manager” is absolutely fine. Take the hour you just freed up and do something more enjoyable with it.

Keep it under one page.

If your cover letters are longer than a page, you’re writing too much, and you risk annoying hiring managers who are likely sifting through hundreds of applications and don’t have time to read lengthy tomes. On the other hand, if you only write one paragraph, it’s unlikely that you’re making a compelling case for yourself as a candidate — not impossible, but unlikely. For most people, something close to a page is about right.

Don’t agonize over the small details.

What matters most about your cover letter is its content. You should of course ensure that it’s well-written and thoroughly proofread, but many job seekers agonize over elements of the letter that really don’t matter. I get tons of  questions from job seekers  about whether they should attach their cover letter or put it in the body of the email (answer: No one cares, but attaching it makes it easier to share and will preserve your formatting), or what to name the file (again, no one really cares as long as it’s reasonably professional, but when people are dealing with hundreds of files named “resume,” it’s courteous to name it with your full name).

Approaching your cover letter like this can make a huge difference in your job search. It can be the thing that moves your application from the “maybe” pile (or even the “no” pile) to the “yes” pile. Of course, writing cover letters like this will take more time than sending out the same templated letter summarizing your résumé — but 10 personalized, compelling cover letters are likely to get you more  interview invitations  than 50 generic ones will.

An ex-NYPD cop arrested in October for hawking heroin and fentanyl while on duty has been indicted.

Grace Rosa Baez, who was arrested along with Cesar Martinez, of Yonkers, were charged with  conspiracy to distribute narcotics  and distribution of narcotics,  U.S. Attorney of the Southern District of New York Damian Williams  said.

Baez, 37, and Martinez, 42, allegedly tried to sell the narcotics to a federal informant between Oct. 9 and Oct. 19, according to the indictment, which was filed March 20 in Manhattan federal court.

Both defendants this week entered not guilty pleas.

Baez, of the Bronx, gave the informant a sample of what she said was “top quality” fentanyl in a Mentos candy container, officials said.

She then told the informant she could sell them a kilo of heroin for $25,000, and 800 grams of fentanyl with pricing to be negotiated later based on the drug’s purity.

Baez, who had been a cop since 2012, allegedly had multiple meetings with the informant, court papers show..

Baez — who once sung the praises of being an NYPD cop — quit the NYPD after  she was busted.

The ex-cop is currently under house arrest with an electronic monitoring device.

Martinez is being held without bail, court documents show.
