KSU's Career Services Tip Sheets

  • Cover Letters & Thank You Letters How to guide on formatting and what to put in a cover letter.

Getting Started

The cover letter, or letter of application, always accompanies a resume that is mailed. A cover letter may or may not be required for an online posting, so adhere to application guidelines. A cover letter is NOT needed when handing your resume directly to an employer. In general, although a cover letter may not be formally requested, an assumption should be made that it is required.

General Guidelines

Your letter must be free of errors and grammatically correct. Do not over use the word “I”.

If the employer asks you to include salary requirements in the letter, always state your requirements in a range, and that you are open to negotiation.

Customize your letter to each organization and match your skills, experience, and personality traits to the position.

Read your letter out loud to ensure that your ideas flow and to catch any awkward sentences or overuse of words or phrases.

Use a business letter format with left-justified margins, and center the letter vertically on the page.

The letter should be no more than one page in length and printed on the same paper as your resume.

For electronic transmission of your letter, employers often prefer certain formats. One of the easiest and most reliable methods is to convert your cover letter to a PDF through Adobe Acrobat Writer.

Covering letters: tips and hints

When applying for a job you want to make a great impact, with a stand out CV. But before employers even read your CV, they will generally be greeted with a covering letter. They are going to be reading your covering letter before your CV, so it’s important to keep them interested from the first page. You typically only get 30 seconds to grab the attention of an employer! In order to make a good first impression, your covering letter needs to be well structured, grammatically correct and support your CV.

Take a look at our useful tips for creating a successful letter below, and some links for further information.

  • Introduce yourself and inform the employer which vacancy you are applying for Begin with a clear indication of the job you’re applying for and where you heard about it. If you have the name of a direct contact or referral, this is the place to mention it.
  • Highlight your relevant skills and how they can be used in this role Relate your skills and experience to those outlined in the job description, making sure you tailor the covering letter for each application. Explain why you are applying for this particular role, at this specific company.
  • Mention any additional skills over and above the job advert Add any supporting information you feel is necessary, such as applied aspects of the role or what additional skills you can bring over and above the job specification.
  • Personalise each letter Try to find out the name of the person responsible for recruiting the role and some key company information can also show that you’ve done your research.
  • Research the company you are applying to , and include information about them in your covering letter, detailing what attracts you to work for them. This will demonstrate that you have taken the time to research their work, and you are enthusiastic to work for them, rather than just sending a generic letter.
  • Keep it clear and concise One A4 page will be enough for a covering letter. you want to grab the employer’s attention in the first few lines, as you would with your CV. However, don’t rewrite your CV, just include key statements that will impress a prospective employer.
  • Spell Check Ensure your letter is free of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors! Employers may be put off if your application consists of lots of grammar mistakes, especially if the role requires attention to detail!
  • Contact Details Where ever possible send your letter and CV to a named individual, rather than using sir/madam. Research using websites or contact their HR department and get yourself a name of who to address your letter to.

If you need further advice, or you would like a staff member to look over your covering letter, the  Careers and Employability Service  Drop Ins (daily, 10.30am – 12.30pm and 2pm – 4pm in the Careers Building) are a great place to start, where qualified employability and careers advisers are on hand with support and advice.

Featured story, your application.

How to write a CV, application form and covering letter

The majority of employers now use online application forms, rather than, or in addition to, a CV and cover letter.

Common questions

  • Why do you want to work for this organisation?
  • What relevant work experience do you have for this role?
  • What relevant skills do you have for this role?

Always refer back to the job description, and relate your answers to the role, and organisation, you are applying for.

Competency-Based Questions

These questions look for evidence a particular skill or competency, for example:

  • Describe a time when you had to work in a group to accomplish a task
  • Describe a time when you were faced with a challenging situation, and how you responded to it
  • Describe a situation when you had to influence other people

Competency-based selection methods are based on the assumption that past behaviour is the best predictor for future behaviour. It's not enough to just say what you can offer; you need to do this by giving evidence. Selectors are less interested in what you've done than how you've done it.

The best way to prepare for a competency based question is to

  • Read the employer's web site and/or job description, and note the skills and competencies they require.
  • Note down any examples you can think of, when you have put these competencies into practice. These could come from vacation or part-time work, clubs and societies, voluntary work, holidays and travel or personal and family experiences.
  • Compose a paragraph or so for each situation, outlining what happened, how you approached it and what the outcome was.
  • Think about the underlying question. What is it that they want you to tell them about yourself?

You can use the  S.T.A.R Approach  to answer these questions:

  • Situation – set the scene
  • Task – what were you asked to do?
  • Action – what did you do?
  • Result – what was the outcome?

When answering these types of questions:

  • Try to give quantifiable results if possible. This gives a much better impression of your achievement.
  • "during my time as Chairman, membership rose by 20"
  • "we raised £200 for charity"
  • "my marks improved from 55% to 65%"
  • Sometimes, interviewers will ask you about a situation where you were unsuccessful. This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how well you learn lessons from failure, but also to demonstrate qualities such as resilience; determination; strength of character; flexibility; initiative; and lateral thinking.
  • The examples you give can be from work, study or personal life – but try to give a variety.
  • Don't go into too much background detail - keep to the point!
  • Think of the most relevant examples, rather than the most impressive. If you are asked to describe a time when you had to give a presentation in front of the public, a seminar paper which involved research and planning will carry more weight than "presenting a bouquet to the Queen when I was four years old"!

Any other information

Sometimes, an application form has an “any other information” section. What you put here is entirely up to you. You could use it to cover anything you have not included in previous sections, to expand on your skills and experience, or your interest in the company, or to give more detail about your degree, such as projects or dissertations. Use this space - don't waste an opportunity to make a good impression!

  • Read the instructions carefully and make sure you follow them.
  • Read the Job Description and Person Specification, to understand what the job entails.
  • Research the company and role beforehand and find out as much as possible.
  • Be clear and concise in your answers, and check your spelling and grammar. Don't use informal language.
  • Cut and paste from your CV or other applications. Save your work, so you can reuse these answers in other applications, and refresh your memory before interview.
  • Answer Competency Based Questions with concise but specific details, using the S.T.A.R. method.

This $264,000 Letter Reveals the Very Different Superman We Almost Got

Four years before jerry siegel and joe shuster debuted the character, siegel collaborated with artist russell keaton on an alternate take on the man of steel..

This $264,000 Letter Reveals the Very Different Superman We Almost Got - Comics

A copy of Action Comics #1, the holy grail of comic books and the first appearance of Superman, just sold for $6 million through Heritage Auctions , making it the most expensive comic in history.

But that’s not even the interesting part.

Also  auctioned , for a relatively paltry $264,000, is a three-page letter from 1934 written by Jerry Siegel, Superman’s co-creator, to artist Russell Keaton, offering to collaborate on a pitch for a new comic strip titled “Superman.” This inchoate version is similar to, yet markedly different from, the familiar Man of Steel. It’s a little-known gem of comic book history, and a fascinating look at what might have been.

The Birth of Jerry Siegel and Russell Keaton’s Superman

Russell Keaton was the artist of the popular newspaper comic strip Skyroads , as well as the ghost artist on the Buck Rogers Sunday strip. His illustration style was similar to Joe Shuster’s, Superman’s other co-creator, but it was more developed.

Siegel and Shuster had temporarily parted ways back then, after their earlier version of “The Superman” had been rejected by publishers. Shuster became despondent, even burning the original artwork (only the cover survived). Hoping an established artist would help change things, Siegel wrote to several.

Some accounts of these events have portrayed Siegel as callous, ditching his partner and best friend for a chance at success. But in his unpublished memoir Creation of a Superhero, written in 1979, Siegel describes how Shuster had given up on the project, leaving him to move on without him.

The 1934 letter from Siegel to Keaton proposing a Superman strip. Credit: Heritage Auctions

Either way, of the artists Siegel wrote to, Keaton bore out. In the auctioned letter, Siegel details his “trifle fantastic” idea for a newspaper comic strip (the letter is from June 12, 1934, predating what is generally considered the first modern comic book, Famous Funnies #1 , from July 1934) about a hero who can “leap over a ten story building, raise unheard-of weights, run as fast as an express train”—what would become the famous intro , “faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.”

Siegel and Keaton collaborated through mail, producing nine known strips between June and November 1934. You can read them here .

A Hero From Earth’s Doomed Future

Their Superman was literally the Man of Tomorrow, a toddler sent not from distant planet Krypton but from millions of years in Earth’s future, when humans have evolved to gain “titanic strength.” As “giant cataclysms” destroy the planet, the last man on Earth, an unnamed scientist, sends his son back to 1935 in a small time machine he invented (Siegel intended the adult Superman’s adventures to take place in the near future).

He’s found by Sam and Molly Kent, red-blooded Americans who can’t understand the strange language the child speaks, leading them to think that “his people came from a foreign country.” They turn him over to an orphanage but later return to adopt him, naming him Clark.

Following strips would have shown him grow to adulthood and decide to “devote his existence to helping those in need” as Superman. He would have had super-strength and super-speed, but no costume.

The main difference—that Superman escaped the destruction of Earth rather than Krypton—was haunting, but likely too morbid.

Like palimpsests and pentimenti —writings and paintings that were covered over with new ones but still contain traces of the old—the Siegel/Keaton strips are an intriguing look at the evolution of the mythology.

When he made his first appearance in Action Comics #1, baby Superman was rocketed to Earth from a distant planet by his scientist father, whereupon he was found by “a passing motorist” who dropped him off at an orphanage. By the following year’s Superman #1, the planet was named Krypton and the Kents were back, the wife now named Mary. They wouldn’t be named Jonathan and Martha until Adventure Comics #149 (February 1950) and Superboy #12 (January 1951), respectively.

Compared to these origins, the earlier Siegel/Keaton version placed greater emphasis on Superman’s alienness. Instead of a baby, he’s sent away as a three-year-old, old enough to talk and cry out homesick. It’s more poignant, but also less clean and fablelike.

Found in the time machine with him is a hidden note, which in future strips would have been revealed to describe his heritage. But by adulthood, he can no longer read it. This abandoned plot point is a strong reflection of the immigrant metaphor at the heart of Superman; speaking in a second language was the first challenge of assimilation, and forgetting the ancestral tongue over time its cost.

It’s also evocative of the letters sent with children fleeing the Nazis in the Kindertransport , many of whom were raised unaware of the community and culture they were uprooted from. (The concept did, however, eventually find its way into lore, coincidentally or not, in the form of a Kryptonian tablet Clark can’t decipher, in Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu’s Superman: Birthright (2003–2004).)

The main difference in Siegel and Keaton’s origin story—that Superman escaped the destruction of Earth rather than Krypton—was haunting, but likely too morbid. And it was incongruous to his character, which even then was optimistic. It did, however, make him even more like Moses —where the “baby whisked to safety in a small craft” idea came from—since as a human from the future, he was a hero returning to his own people with amazing abilities to save them.

One of the nine known strips Siegel and Keaton produced between June and November 1934.

The Seeds of the Superman We Know Today

According to Siegel, both Bell Syndicate and Publishers Syndicate showed interest in the strip, but it didn’t come to pass. Keaton withdrew from the partnership, abruptly and without explanation. Likely, it was either because he discovered that Siegel was only 20 years old or because he decided to pursue his own comic. Keaton launched the syndicated strip Flyin’ Jenny in October 1939, about a daring aviatrix. It became fairly successful, though it was discontinued in 1946 following his death from cancer.

Siegel recounts in his memoir how the day he received Keaton’s terse rejection became the famous sleepless night in which all the elements of the familiar Superman fell into the place, sometime in late November 1934. The following morning he raced over to Shuster’s home, and by the evening they had several weeks’ worth of strips.

It would take them four more years to sell Superman to DC, but that’s a story for another time.

Is buying essays online safe?

Shopping through online platforms is a highly controversial issue. Naturally, you cannot be completely sure when placing an order through an unfamiliar site, with which you have never cooperated. That is why we recommend that people contact trusted companies that have hundreds of positive reviews.

As for buying essays through sites, then you need to be as careful as possible and carefully check every detail. Read company reviews on third-party sources or ask a question on the forum. Check out the guarantees given by the specialists and discuss cooperation with the company manager. Do not transfer money to someone else's account until they send you a document with an essay for review.

Good online platforms provide certificates and some personal data so that the client can have the necessary information about the service manual. Service employees should immediately calculate the cost of the order for you and in the process of work are not entitled to add a percentage to this amount, if you do not make additional edits and preferences.

Our Service Is Kept Secret

We are here to help you with essays and not to expose your identity. Your anonymity is our priority as we know it is yours. No personal data is collected on our service and no third parties can snoop through your info. All our communication is encrypted and stays between you and your writer. You receive your work via email so no one will have access to it except you. We also use encrypted payment systems with secure gateways for extra security.

Is essay writing service legal?

Essay writing services are legal if the company has passed a number of necessary checks and is licensed. This area is well developed and regularly monitored by serious services. If a private person offers you his help for a monetary reward, then we would recommend you to refuse his offer. A reliable essay writing service will always include terms of service on their website. The terms of use describe the clauses that customers must agree to before using a product or service. The best online essay services have large groups of authors with diverse backgrounds. They can complete any type of homework or coursework, regardless of field of study, complexity, and urgency.

When you contact the company Essayswriting, the support service immediately explains the terms of cooperation to you. You can control the work of writers at all levels, so you don't have to worry about the result. To be sure of the correctness of the choice, the site contains reviews from those people who have already used the services.

Kent County sewer main line breaks south of Dover

cover letter kent

DOVER -- A Kent County sewer main has broken just south of Dover, according to officials Thursday.

The city of Dover asks that, due to it being a main line, residents conserve their water for the next 24 hours.

The break occurred at the corner of Rising Sun Road and Sandy Hill Trail, according to Kent County Public Works director Diana Golt. The line is a 30-inch concrete pipe and serves residents north of its location.

Ms. Golt said there are a variety of things that could have caused the break. It could have been corrosion at the top, cracks at the bottom due to installation, or even equipment damaging the line, she said.

"We've also seen some secondary issues where there's been other utility installation. Perhaps it was hit 20 years ago and it took a long time for the crack to develop," she said.

Ms. Golt said the sewer system's aging infrastructure could be partly to blame, but the concrete pipes currently in place should last 50 to 100 years.

The leak was discovered sometime before 8 a.m. Thursday, she said, with contractors dispatched to the site to begin to investigate and repair.

Previous breaks took around 24 hours to repair, but Ms. Golt says this one could take longer.

Enrolled Dover residents were informed through Hyper Reach, the city's auto-notification system. Users can sign up at https://hyper-reach.com/decityofdover.html .
