Strategies to Write an Effective Flight Attendant Cover Letter

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

When assisting passengers on each flight, you probably notice you need to tailor the services you provide to unique needs. The same is true when creating a cover letter .

Every airline has differing processes and procedures, so it’s important to emphasize the essential skills they’re looking for in your cover letter while connecting to their specific mission. For instance, an airline that emphasizes its concern for safety would likely appreciate hearing about your 10-step pre-flight safety check process.

Achieve a clean takeoff with the greeting and intro of your flight attendant cover letter

The difference between a flight attendant getting passed over and grabbing a hiring manager’s attention can occur immediately in the greeting and intro.

The first thing you want to do is address it to a specific hiring manager if you can find their name in the job description or on the airline’s website. It’s similar to learning passenger’s names to provide a personalized experience while helping them.

Then, once you get into the opening paragraph, you can make a great first impression by connecting with the key skills the airline is looking for and its specific mission. For example, you could discuss how you want to use your customer service skills to help the airline achieve its mission of a comfortable and enjoyable flying experience for all passengers.

The opener below gets off to a good start but falls short when the applicant doesn’t get into any specifics about the airline’s needs or mission.

Doesn’t connect with the airline enough!

Hello Mr. Scott,

I was excited to see your flight attendant job opening. I think your airline provides excellent service and would be a great fit for my skills.

Instead, write an opener like the one below that immediately connects with the strong interpersonal and communication skills that United Airlines is looking for.

A great opener connecting with the airline’s needs!

Dear Mr. Jones,

As a passionate and highly motivated individual, I have always been fascinated by the aviation industry. My deep enthusiasm for ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers, combined with my strong interpersonal and communication skills, make me an ideal fit for the flight attendant role at United Airlines.

Showcase your qualifications in the body of your flight attendant cover letter

Once you get into the body of your flight attendant cover letter, you want to discuss the details of your qualifications and work experiences .

Airlines use many metrics to ensure they are providing a great experience for passengers. A great way to stand out in this section is by optimizing with key numbers like passenger satisfaction scores or how you helped maintain excellent flight safety ratings.

If you don’t have as much experience, you can also use the skills you picked up while obtaining your FAA certificate. For instance, you could explain how you’ll help ensure flight safety with the skills you gained through courses that taught emergency procedures, like assisting with oxygen masks and alerting the captain of updates, where you obtained a 98% overall grade.

An excellent body paragraph focused on relevant metrics!

At Alaska Airlines, as a flight assistant, I deployed my effective communication skills to collaborate with the entire team, which improved on-time flight takeoff by 33%. I also helped handle passenger complaints, solving 98% of the cases without the need for further escalation.

Create a memorable closing for your flight attendant cover letter

When the flight lands, you always thank the passengers for flying with your airline and ensure any final concerns are handled. You should take a similar approach as you come to a close on your flight attendant cover letter.

First, you want to relate back to details about the airline’s mission and the primary skills you wanted to emphasize, like food handling or flight safety regulations. Then, end with a light call to action, such as “I look forward to discussing this opportunity with you further.”

The closer below doesn’t hit the mark on that since it feels a bit too generic, not relating to any of the airline’s needs.

Lacking detail here!

I believe my skills and experience as a flight attendant make me a great fit for this role. Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Robert Gray

Instead, aim for a closer like the one below that relates back to specific details that show the applicant’s passion for American Airlines’ commitment to safety, innovation, and excellence.

A strong closer connected to the airline’s mission!

American Airlines’ commitment to safety, innovation, and excellence aligns perfectly with my personal and professional values. I am eager to bring my strong work ethic, attention to detail, and positive attitude to your team. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss in greater detail how my qualifications align with the needs of American Airlines. Thank you for considering my application.

Leila Razavi

If you review the job description and the airline’s website and can’t find a specific hiring manager’s name, you can simply lead with “Dear [name of airline] hiring team.” Just be very specific to their mission and needs, like customer service or safety procedures, to make the remainder of your cover letter feel personalized.

You should avoid having your flight attending cover letter go over one page. While you’re probably very passionate about providing a great passenger experience, too much information can lose a hiring manager’s attention when quickly reviewing several applicants.

When assisting passengers, you may adjust your tone to fit their personalities and specific needs to ensure great service. You can take a similar approach to your cover letter by trying to match the tone or style that the airline uses in the job description .

Stewardess Cover Letter Example

1. Give your flight attendant cover letter an appealing format

Before an employer even begins reading through the body text of your cover letter , they will look over the entire document to see how well your information is organized.

To format your flight attendant cover letter in an appealing way, a well-designed cover letter header and compelling cover letter headline are required.

Starting with your header, this is where you place key identifying information about yourself and the employer to whom the letter is addressed.

Here is an example of a well-formatted flight attendant cover letter header

Jane Doe , Flight Attendant (123) 456-7890 | [email protected] | linkedin.com/in/jane-doe

To: Amazonian Airways 1234 Street Address Beverly Hills, CA 90201

Next up is your flight attendant headline. The purpose of a headline is to catch the employer’s attention with a very short summary of the main point of your letter.

In your headline, make sure to include a keyword related to the position, a number or trigger word describing the main points, a powerful adjective or verb to make the headline more eye-catching, and a promise statement that tells the employer the letter is just for them.

Here is an example of an excellent flight attendant cover letter headline:

How I Achieved a 5-Star Rating as a Flight Attendant & My Plans to Provide this Service to Your Guests

2. Make your flight attendant cover letter compelling with personalized details

Personalized details on a cover letter can go a long way with an employer, as it shows them that you have taken the time and effort to read up on their company before applying.

To find such personalized details, good places to look include a company’s website, job postings, or social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.). As you search for keywords on skills and qualifications to use in your cover letter, also look for the specific person most likely to read your letter.

Once you discover this person, create a personalized greeting that addresses them by name.

Here are 3 examples of personalized cover letter greetings

  • Dear Lead Flight Attendant John Masons,

Dear Mr. John Masons,

  • Dear Captain Joe King,

3. Highlight your top flight attendant credentials in your cover letter introduction

When it comes to your cover letter introduction , it is highly important to include details about your top qualifications, experience, and specializations. You want the employer to immediately know what makes you a strong candidate for consideration.

Additionally, naming a mutual acquaintance when possible is a good way to form an immediate connection and positive association with an employer.

Good mutual acquaintances to name in a cover letter include business associates of the employer, current or former employees, and professional mentors.

Here is an example of a well-written introduction on a flight attendant cover letter:

I am a flight attendant with 10 years of flying experience and more than 5 years of experience training new flight attendants on safety protocols. To serve as a flight attendant to the best of my ability, I am also a certified interpreter in 5 languages, as well as holding CPR and First Aid certifications. Mr. Luke Walker — one of your airline’s pilots — is my former flight safety instructor, provided me with your name and contact information to discuss this position further.

4. Describe your key skills and accomplishments as a flight attendant

Following your introduction are the body paragraphs of your cover letter. These paragraphs are longer and detail your key skills and accomplishments that are most relevant to the job you are applying for.

In some cases, using bullet points to break up your body paragraphs and give them a more organized feel can be useful for keeping your cover letter’s visual appeal intact. Moreover, the details you provide should be as concise and specific as possible, showcasing your professional value above all else.

Here are 6 flight attendant skills to describe in a cover letter

  • Teamwork and leadership
  • Passenger communication and customer service
  • Passenger safety protocols
  • Emergency situation management
  • Positivity and compassion
  • Ability to provide clear directives

Here is an example of how to describe an accomplishment in a flight attendant cover letter:

In my previous role as a flight attendant at [Former Employer], I was named Employee of the Month on four separate occasions thanks to my outstanding passenger service and exceptional conflict management skills. As a result of my team and I’s service, the airline saw a rise in customer ratings from 3.8 stars to 4.7 stars on average.

5. Write a strong flight attendant cover letter conclusion

The final component of your flight attendant cover letter is a thoughtful conclusion that reiterates your interest in the position and encourages the employer to get in touch with you.

In this conclusion, an employer should find:

  • How and when to contact you
  • What your availability is
  • When you would like to hear from them and when you plan to follow up
  • A formal sign-off

Here is an example of an effective conclusion from a flight attendant's cover letter:

With my highly-rated service paired with your top-notch team of flight attendants, you will find I am the perfect addition to your staff. I am eager to hear from you and hope to get in touch by the end of next week. You may reach me any day of the week between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (123) 456-7890.

Many Thanks,

Have a flight attendant cover letter that tells your story

According to some experts, finding exciting job adverts is one of the most challenging problems job-seekers need to deal with.

But according to our own research, conveying your enthusiasm to a one-page cover letter might prove to be even more challenging.

After all, you don’t want a bland and boring cover letter to represent you, we get it.

But how can you make a strong first impression in just a few lines?

Below, you’ll find the best Flight Attendant cover letter tips and examples that will help you find out.

flight attendant cover letter example.jpg

Let’s begin by discussing the difference between a cover letter and a resume . The resume is the place where you should list all your hard skills, achievements, and talents.

The cover letter, on the other hand, is your chance to share more about yourself and show who you are .

But what’s the way to grab the reader’s attention? How can you make the hiring manager want to meet you and learn more about you?

Stand out with a strong introduction and an appropriate salutation

In general, the salutation you use depends on the tone of voice you’ve decided to go for but also on the company culture.

However, it’s always a good idea to address your letter to the person responsible for the recruitment process . If you don’t know their name, try to find it out. And only if that proves to be impossible, choose a generic salutation.

Here are some phrases you can use (note that some of them require you to know the hiring manager's name):

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear Head of [team you're applying for],
  • Dear [company name] Recruiter,
  • Dear Alex Johnson

The introduction is your chance of getting the reader’s attention and giving them a reason to see you as a good fit.

So make sure you highlight your excitement about the company or the industry (or even both!) and the reasons why you’d like to grow in the field.

Avoid using clichés like “I found your job posting on website X and decided to apply”.

Mention both your hard and soft skills

Although you’ve probably listed (or are planning to list) your hard skills on your resume , don’t forget to mention them in your cover letter as well. One way to do that is by telling a personal story .

You can share how some of your skills or qualities have helped you achieve goals in the past. Or perhaps you want to talk about the things that help you get over challenges. You decide.

Naturally, both soft skills and hard skills should be present here. It’s especially important to include skills and qualifications that have been mentioned as part of the job description or the requirements section of the advert. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems that screen documents for certain keywords.

Prove your passion about the company

Every recruiter wants to know whether you’ve decided to apply because you’re familiar with the company or because their job advert was the first thing you saw this morning.

So – show that you’ve researched the company and are aware of its strengths, weaknesses, and potential problems.

In addition, you can also share how your Flight Attendant skills can add value to the team.

End with a call to action

Using the right words to end your Flight Attendant cover letter is essential for two reasons.

First, it supports the great first impression you’ve already made. Second, it’s a way to express your gratitude for the recruiter’s time and consideration.

The closing line you choose depends on your preferences and the company culture. If you want to be on the safe side, stick to more traditional phrases, such as “Looking forward to hearing from you” and “Thank you for your consideration”.

How to Create a High-Flying Cover Letter

In 2023 cover letters are still  seen as useful  by HR representatives. That’s because they can show hiring managers a number of things, such as  your motivation and qualifications .

As a Flight Attendant, it will be key to come across as a patient professional and of course, one that has t he necessary training  to be successful.

To do this you’ll need to make sure you:

  • Start off with a strong introduction
  • Mention your certifications
  • Add some accomplishments as a Flight Attendant if you have any

This is where y our resume can help you as a guide , but your letter shouldn’t be an exact copy.

Prepare for Take Off: How to Start a Flight Attendant Cover Letter

When writing your introduction, there are  specific elements you should always include , such as your motivation for applying, your relevant experience, and how you meet the job’s requirements.

We’ll cover how to write introductions for both experienced and inexperienced candidates.

For experienced Flight Attendants

When you’re an experienced flight attendant, your introduction should  highlight your years in the industry , your dedication to providing excellent service, and your excitement about the prospect of bringing your skills and expertise to a new role.

Here’s an example of an effective introduction:

With over 5 years of experience in the aviation industry, my passion for ensuring passenger safety, providing exceptional customer service, and contributing to a pleasant travel environment has only grown. Having honed my skills as a Flight Attendant at XYZ Airlines, I am eager to bring my dedication and expertise to the team at ABC Airways. My experience, coupled with my proven ability to manage emergencies and maintain a calm demeanor, make me an ideal candidate for the Flight Attendant position you have advertised.

This is how you get your cover letter off to a flying start. It effectively showcases the applicant’s experience and  how their skills developed over time . It also clearly communicates their motivation for applying and directly addresses the job requirements.

For Flight Attendants without experience

Are you fresh out of training and/or changing fields? You’ll need to  take a different approach  when it comes to grabbing an employer’s attention.

Take a look at the following sample:

As a recent graduate from XYZ Hospitality School with a focus on customer service and safety management, I am enthusiastically applying for the Flight Attendant role at ABC Airways. Despite my lack of direct experience, my academic and part-time roles in customer service positions have equipped me with skills in problem-solving, clear communication, and maintaining a composed demeanor under pressure. I am excited about the prospect of bringing my dedication to service, safety, and a positive passenger experience to your esteemed airline.

This intro  emphasizes relevant education and transferable skills  from other customer service roles. The candidate’s motivation to join the airline is expressed clearly, and they effectively address how they meet the job requirements, even without direct experience in the field.

Highlight Your Flight Attendant Experience

If you’ve been a Flight Attendant in the past, you should definitely  add something about your experience .

You can mention the amount of time you’ve spent as a Flight Attendant, and more impressively,  awards or data , and you’ll want to keep it near the top of your cover letter body.

For example:

  • I have logged over 10,000 flight hours, ensuring passenger comfort and safety on numerous domestic and international routes.
  • During my 3 years of service at XYZ Airlines, I have effectively managed the cabin on more than 200 transatlantic flights, maintaining a record of zero safety incidents.
  • In my previous role at ABC Airlines, I served on approximately 2,000 flights, translating into over 5,000 hours of flight time, consistently receiving positive passenger feedback.
  • Over 6,000 hours of flight time with XYZ Airlines, I introduced innovative customer service strategies that increased positive passenger feedback by 40%.
  • In my 5 years as a Flight Attendant at ABC Airlines, I have spent over 7,500 hours in the air, during which time I was able to reduce in-flight service complaints by 20%.

According to Forbes, over  90% of large companies  use an Applicant Tracking System, and by including data you’ll have a better chance of being noticed.

How to Show Off Your Flight Attendant Qualifications

Whether you are trying to work at 30,000 feet for the first time or you are a frequent flyer, you’re going to have to  show you are certified  to do so.

According to  49 U.S. Code § 44728 :

“No person may serve as a flight attendant aboard an aircraft of an air carrier unless that person holds a certificate of demonstrated proficiency from the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration…..”

That means you’ll need to  state that you are FAA certified  in the body of your letter as this is a necessary certification to have to work as a Flight Attendant in the United States.

However, if you have  any other relevant titles  that you can present it will help your case even more, such as:

  • CPR course certification
  • First aid course certification
  • Foreign language degree, or title

These are all helpful to include to demonstrate that you are a Flight Attendant that has the  safety and comfort of the passenger  in mind.

Here is some inspiration on how to  demonstrate these details  in your letter:

In addition to holding an FAA certification, I am also proficient in Spanish, certified by the Cervantes Institute, and possess a First Aid Certificate from the American Red Cross. This enables me to ensure flight safety, communicate effectively with a diverse range of passengers, and promptly address any onboard medical emergencies.

How to Write a Flight Attendant Cover Letter as a First-Time Flyer

If you are an entry-level Flight Attendant your cover letter will be missing the experience that some other candidates can include.

However, that shouldn’t clip your wings.

Apart from your qualifications, if you  focus on your strengths  and present your qualities and passion for becoming a full-time Flight Attendant you can still impress any hiring manager or ATS machine.

As an entry-level candidate ensure you mention your:

  • Transferable skills
  • Enthusiasm for customer service and travel

In your cover letter you can add these elements in the following manner:

My customer service experience has honed my communication and attention to detail skills. My passion for travel and dedication to delivering exceptional service make me a strong fit for the dynamic team at XYZ Airlines.

Even without prior Flight Attendant accomplishments, you can give your cover letter a major boost.

Transferrable Skills to Mention as a Flight Attendant

It would be a great idea to  mention any transferable skills  that you honed while working in an unrelated job or internship.

Some  skills that you can mention  on your Flight Attendant application include:

  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Multitasking
  • Emergency response
  • Multilingual skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Crisis management

While some of these seem cliché they  stress that you can take charge  during a tense situation, work well with others, and work well with clients, all essential skills that a Flight Attendant needs.

Writing cover letters may not be everyone’s favorite thing to do, but if you do a good job, your application will be soaring.

If you  include the right information and data  you won’t have much trouble landing an interview.

Just remember the key points in this guide:

  • Stress your motivation and accomplishments
  • Point out your experience if you have any
  • Include transferable skills if you’re an entry-level Flight Attendant
  • Start your letter the right way

Remember to  use your resume as a helpful reference  when writing your letter. By using this advice and the right tools you’ll have an application that’s ready to be airborne.

How to Write a Persuasive Flight Attendant Cover Letter That Will Get You Noticed

typing a flight attendant cover letter

The purpose of a cover letter is to give a sneak-peak into what your resume will contain. It truly is the first impression the employer will have of you. And it is also true that a poorly written cover letter can send your application straight to the recycle bin.

This is where you introduce yourself and start selling to the company what you have to offer. It’s like a self-introduction that helps you sell yourself. In this very first stage of the process, it’s important that you stand out from the crowd, so you need to put a lot of thought and effort into it.

My step by step guide about how to write the perfect cover letter for the position of Flight Attendant will get you ahead of the crowd.

Table of Contents

Never send the same cover letter for all jobs

NEVER send a generic application in response to all the job ads you find.

It’s very important that you tailor your resume or send a cover letter according to each position you are applying for.

It can be time-consuming I know, but, trust me, it’s worth it.

Keep in mind that most of the airlines receive hundreds of resumes for an average job opening, so you need to pay attention to the quality of your cover letter as well as your CV in order to get interviews.

If you are not getting interviews, it may well be that you haven’t paid enough attention to this very important first step.

Your cover letter is not a copy of your resume

Don’t copy the information in your CV and simply rewrite it into a letter format.

The purpose of the cover letter is to complement your resume, not to repeat it.

It’s an opportunity to zoom in on your skills, or on whatever that is making you the ideal candidate for the job.

Highlight why you want to work with them above other companies and motivate the recruiter to read your resume in detail.

You should match your skills with their needs. Include qualities like team working, interpersonal skills, good customer service skills, and being confident in handling difficult situations and always.

Remember to give examples.

Match your cover letter style and font to your resume

Use the same font style, sizes, and colors that you picked for your resume.

It will look unprofessional if they don’t match.

Make sure they are readable fonts; the tried and true classic fonts such as Arial and Times New Roman work best.

The perfect size is between 12 and 14 and the style of your letter should be simple and elegant.

You’ll find downloadable resume templates and matching cover letter templates here .

Before you even start writing, do your research about the company

You should be familiar with the airline’s history, aircraft fleet, go to the airline website and learn about their vision, corporate values, the way they work and their culture . Read the job listing carefully.

Once you understand about the company and the job, you can match your skills and qualifications to their needs.

These are some examples showcasing the relevant experience you have for the job, or talking about your skills and why you are a good fit for the position:

  • If the airline is looking for “language of destination” flight attendants: e.g. Spanish-speaking flight attendants and you can speak the language, make sure you mention that in your cover letter. But don’t just repeat your CV here, always add information to what is already in your resume. For example,  things such as how you learned the language, and whether you have used it before in a work situation, Don’t just say that you have an intermediate Spanish level.
  • If you are applying for a VIP flight attendant position in a private jet company, and you’ve never worked in the industry before, but you have worked in luxury hotels, restaurants or top-class companies, don’t forget to highlight that! It can be really helpful. Remember corporate aviation is all about etiquette and protocol, so any job in relation to excellence in a high standard of customer service is a PLUS! If you have studied or worked as a sommelier, or if you were a stewardess on a  yacht, these sorts of things can definitely be an advantage.
  • If you don’t have any previous airline experience. Talk about any hospitality or customer service experience you have and explain how you have already developed some of the skills required for the flight attendant’s job. Some of the qualities of a flight attendant are what we call ‘transferable’, which means that they can be used in other industries. Skills such as being professional, a team worker, responsible, and being flexible are all transferable. Provide a short example of what you have done in your work life, like offering first aid, dealing with an unhappy customer or helping a new coworker. Put yourself in team context – show your collaboration skills and how you shared the duties with your colleagues to work as a  team in order to succeed.

Don’t copy the content that most of the resume websites are offering – they all suck!

They are written by people who may be good at Human Resources, but they don’t know anything about the role of a flight attendant.

A sample of a cover letter on these websites usually recommends that you showcase abilities such as a clear speaking voice or the ability to reach overhead bins, etc. Which all sounds pretty good, but is actually missing the mark.

If you are interested in knowing which skills employers are looking for in a flight attendant , read my article:   How to Write the Perfect Flight Attendant Resume and Stand out from the Crowd .

Keep it short, just 3 or 4 paragraphs, no longer

This isn’t a novel about you .

You just need to briefly and clearly  explain a few things such as:

  • Why you want to work as cabin crew for this particular airline
  • Why you are the perfect match for this position: highlighting your skills and how you can add value to the airline
  • Thank the recruiter for taking the time to read your letter.
One page maximum! Keep it short and concise – most recruiters prefer to read half a page to  a full one.

Cover your gaps or red flags

Your cover letter is especially important if you have an employment gap or red flags on your resume.

If you have something that they might not understand in your CV (like job-hopping, large time gaps or a complete career change), it’s a great opportunity for you to explain it here.

Follow the instructions religiously

If there are any instructions given in the application information, please follow them carefully.

There’s nothing worse than receiving applications from people who haven’t even read the job listing to the end.

Maybe you’ve been asked to include a certain phrase or word in the cover letter, to address it to someone in particular, or perhaps to answer a question.

Not doing what you’re asked will make you lose the job opportunity immediately.

Don’t forget to thank them for taking the time to read your cover letter.

Let  let them know your availability for an interview.

Save your cover letter in PDF

If you are sending the cover letter online, make sure it’s in PDF format unless you are given specific instructions to do otherwise.

Your document in PDF will preserve the exactly the same look, no matter on which device it’s opened or printed.

Before sending your cover letter

  • Reread and polish your cover letter. Search for any spelling or grammar mistakes, or ask someone to read and correct it. Don’t rush – you may want to send it as soon as possible, but you’ll make more mistakes. Make sure your cover letter is looking perfect.
  • Make sure you send it to the correct email address, and to the appropriate person.
  • Make sure your contact details are in the heading of the letter.
  • Name the file with your name: NicoleSmith.pdf not just resume.pdf It will help the recruiter find you CV and differentiate it from the rest.
  • Don’t use weird or unprofessional email addresses. You shouldn’t be surprised if employers are not getting back to you because your email is unprofessional, such as [email protected] , [email protected]
  • If you are sending your cover letter via a website and you have to fit it into a text box, you can copy and paste your cover letter and edit it to make it shorter. Remember people are less patient when reading on screen. They just scan the text.
  • Check your writing style. Don’t use too many clichés or empty expressions that are not bringing anything. Always use formal language and business-speak, never use emoticons or write in UPPERCASE. Use short paragraphs and leave plenty of space between paragraphs to make it easier to read.

I know most of these tips are just “common sense” and probably many of you send excellent CVs and cover letters, which transmit enthusiasm, interest, and motivation. Thank you!

But for others, it’s a good reminder to know that you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression and stand out from the pile. So do not miss this opportunity.

Cover letter sample for a flight attendant without previous experience

flight attendant cover letter sample

Don’t forget, this example is not to copy-paste by any means!

You can use it to get inspired but remember:

Try to be 100% relevant and to the point.

Show the potential employer that you’ve done your research and you know about the company.

Showcase your abilities or experience. In this case, your tourism and hospitality work experience, which is relevant for the role.

Don’t forget to mention your availability to attend an interview or to relocate for this position.

This is how you should build your flight attendant cover letter too.

Flight Attendant Skills

Jobs for flight attendants are competitive. One way to stand out from the crowd is to write a strong cover letter that emphasizes your unique skills and abilities.

Review an example of a cover letter for a  flight attendant job , and then personalize it to reflect your qualifications for the job. Also see below for a list of in-demand flight attendant skills you can incorporate into your cover letter, resume and interview.

Tips for Writing a Strong Flight Attendant Cover Letter

Individualize Your Cover Letter Make sure to write a unique cover letter for each job you apply for. Every airline is different, and each one has different requirements and company culture. Your resume will stand out if you take the time to individualize each letter.

Emphasize Your Skills  In the body of your letter, emphasize the skills you possess that make you a strong flight attendant. Use the list of flight attendant skills (see below) as well as the job listing, to get a sense of what skills you should highlight in your letter.

Use Examples to Make a Match When stating in your cover letter that you have certain qualifications, include specific examples of times you have demonstrated those skills. For example, if the job posting requirement says, "The ideal candidate is professional, enthusiastic, positive, and committed to providing passengers with the highest level of customer service," you can highlight your related experience:

My extensive experience in the customer service industry has taught me the value of providing positive, individualized service to all customers.

If you have never been a flight attendant, you can draw on other work, volunteer, or school experiences to show your skills. For example, you can demonstrate your customer service skills with an example from a job at a clothing store.

Proofread and Edit Be sure to edit your cover letter for spelling and grammar errors thoroughly. Flight attendant jobs are very competitive, and even a small spelling error can hurt your chances of getting an interview.

How To Become A United Airlines Flight Attendant

  • Flight attendants have many responsibilities, including serving guests, maintaining safety, and providing first aid.
  • United Airlines has specific requirements for flight attendants, including a minimum age of 21 and preferences for a college diploma and customer service experience.
  • Cabin crew must possess physical and safety skills, including the ability to lift heavy objects and pass vision and hearing tests. Decision-making skills are highly valued.

In the golden age of flying, being a flight attendant was a prestigious position, and it came with many responsibilities and perks. The glitz and glamour of the job may have rubbed off after many decades, but it remains one of the most engaging and rewarding professions out there.

According to Cabin Crew HQ , a flight attendant has many responsibilities, including serving the guests and maintaining safety and order in the aircraft. They also need to know how to do basic CPR and first aid to help with medical emergencies. The list is quite extensive. People who think the job is a glorified waitperson couldn't be more wrong.

What Shifts Do Cabin Crew Typically Work?

United's requirements.

There is a minimum age limit to be a flight attendant; United Airlines requires their flight attendants to be at least 21. Education-wise, a high school diploma or GED meets the educational requirements for the job. However, preference is given to those with a college diploma, and experience in customer service work and a second language is considered extremely helpful.

Get all the latest aviation news for North America here.

The majority of the requirements come under the physical & safety requirements, which are outlined in the official job description:

  • Working in aircraft aisles and galleys for up to 14 hours or more.
  • Perform duties that require standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting, stretching, and bending.
  • Ability to perform duties when complicated by other factors, such as turbulence.
  • The ability to push and pull moveable carts that require a push/pull force of 45 lbs (on a four-degree incline).
  • Ability to frequently exert a force of up to 25 lb to lift, push, and pull objects.
  • At times, force of up to 55 lb is required to lift, push, and pull objects with arms at or above shoulder level.
  • A vertical reach of at least 82 in (2.08 meters).

The Unlikely Skills Cabin Crew Pick Up During Their Careers

Cabin crew duties.

A flight attendant's job is to aid passengers onboard and be in charge of cabin safety when required. There are other hats that they wear in addition to this.

Here is a list of duties that United says their flight attendants have to perform:

  • Assist passengers with stowage of carry-on baggage and belongings.
  • Serve/sell food, beverages, and other amenities.
  • Pick up trash and keep the cabin and lavatories clean.
  • Assist passengers, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Operate mechanical and safety systems such as oxygen systems, aircraft doors, evacuation slides, and other safety equipment.
  • Handle credit transactions for in-flight shopping.
  • Use computers for data entry and retrieval.
  • Understand and use technical and specialized information.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly attitude with crew and passengers, take accountability, and display excellent interpersonal skills and good judgment.

What Do Cabin Crew Earn?

Safety-centric abilities and responsibilities.

A cabin crew member is responsible for evacuating and maintaining safety in the cabin during emergencies. As such, they should be able to assert authority over the passengers and speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard by passengers in the vicinity.

Flight attendants must pass a medical like pilots do and show they are physically fit to carry out their duties. They must pass vision and hearing tests to be eligible for the role. They should also be able to pass the initial flight attendant training, which includes emergency procedures and any recurrent training.

Arguably, a cabin attendant's most important skill isn't something that can be learned. It is the ability to make decisions in stressful situations, such as emergencies, with little supervision. Applicants must demonstrate that they adapt to situations, can call back their training, and maintain standards. It is the most desirable trait for any flight attendant.

Where do I sign up?

The United Airlines careers page is the best place to start. They show the current openings and allow you to filter jobs by location. Once you find your desired hub/city, complete the application form and submit a CV.

If you are shortlisted, you'll receive an email inviting you to a preliminary interview. Should you pass it, you will be required to take several assessments. These tend to check things like reasoning skills and decision-making. Another assessment is a personality test.

If you pass the test, you'll undergo medical exams, a drug test, and a background test to see if you meet the requirements. You'll be eligible for the preliminary test if all these are checked out. Passing the initial test entitles you to start the eight-week training course. Once you pass the training course, you'll be onboarded and welcomed as a cabin crew member at United Airlines!

If all this seems challenging, it's because it is. Airlines are looking for people with a particular skill set and personality to work for them, so you must undergo many assessments and interviews. However, plenty of preparation programs are tailored to each airline to help you improve your scores. There are also dedicated schools to help you prepare for your dream job.

Good luck, and we wish you fair weather and clear skies!

Flight attendants are holding airport rallies to protest the lack of new contracts and pay raises

cover letter to flight attendant

Three separate unions representing flight attendants at major U.S. airlines are picketing and holding rallies at 30 airports on Tuesday as they push for new contracts and higher wages.

The flight attendants are increasingly frustrated that pilots won huge pay raises last year while they continue to work for wages that, in some cases, have not increased in several years.

They argue that they have not been rewarded for working through the pandemic and being responsible for the safety of passengers.

The unions are calling Tuesday’s protests a national day of action. It is not a strike.

Federal law makes it difficult for airline unions to conduct legal strikes, which can be delayed or blocked by federal mediators, the president and Congress. Mediators have already turned down one request by flight attendants at American Airlines to begin a countdown to a strike; the union plans to ask again next month.

Tuesday’s protests were organized by the Association of Flight Attendants, which represents crews at United Airlines and several other carriers; the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, the union of crews at American, and the Transport Workers Union, which represents crews at Southwest and other airlines.

Southwest passengers brawl on hawaii-bound flight as crew, others try to break them up: ‘no sense whatsoever’.

Trouble nearly in paradise!

Two passengers came to blows about an hour after takeoff on a Hawaii-bound flight and forced other travelers and crew members to break up the midair fight, a distressing video shows.

The chaos broke out on Southwest Airlines Flight 1288 from Oakland to Lihue Airport on the island of Kauai on Monday, airline officials told Hawaii News Now .

“I heard yelling, screaming and punches. I turned around and saw one man bleeding and then the other man being separated,” passenger Jim Wieder told the outlet.

In the video of the midair exchange, one man, dressed in a gray hoodie and baseball hat, is seen inching closer to the other man, wearing a gray pullover, before the confrontation turns ugly.

The man in the baseball hat is slapped in the arm by the man in the pullover as he approaches him from the aisle, while Southwest Airlines crew members and fellow passengers are already physically separating them.

The man in the baseball cap unleashes a series of punches, landing about seven in the other passenger’s face before fellow male travelers pull him away.

Though restrained, he continued to shout as the men held him back, attempting desperately to calm him down.

The man is seen leaping toward the other passager and begins to throw punches, landing at least seven.

“Frankly, I was a little nervous because we’re 35,000 feet and you’ve got two guys swinging at each other, which makes no sense whatsoever,” Wieder said.

The fight happened between two male passengers about an hour into the flight, another witness shared.

It is unclear what ignited the fight between the two passengers.

The plane did not turn around and continued to fly to Kauai, one witness told the outlet.

A Southwest airlines crew member is seen telling the man to back away after he landed a series of punches on the other passenger.

“We commend our Crew and Customers for their professionalism in [defusing] this situation,” a Southwest official said in a statement to Hawaii News Now .

“The flight landed safely at its scheduled destination, and local authorities met the flight upon arrival.”

Both men were detained after the flight landed.

Never miss a story.

It’s unknown if any charges have been pressed against either man.

“Our department has zero tolerance for violent or unruly behavior aboard an aircraft. If you act out on an airplane, you can face criminal prosecution and fines up to $37,000,″ the US Department of Transportation posted on X.

The scuffle between the men shocked some Hawaii-based flight attendants who spoke with Hawaii News Now.

One of the passengers is seen trying to calm the man down after he was pulled away from the other man.

“I’ve been flying 45 years and no, it was not like this,” a flight attendant told the outlet. “Probably the worst thing that happened a couple years ago was a passenger taking a couple peanuts.”

A nonstop flight from Oakland International Airport to Lihue Airport is about five and a half hours.

The in-air melee is just the newest startling altercation to happen in the skies.

Only two weeks ago,  a JetBlue passenger had to be restrained by four fellow travelers  after becoming abusive toward the cabin crew.

Both men were detained after the flight landed, but it’s unknown if any charges have been pressed against either man.

The flight had taken off from London Gatwick Airport and was heading to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport when the aggressive man was caught on video struggling against four other men who were trying to hold him still in the darkened cabin aisle.

The passenger was allegedly drunk when he began to become unruly in midair.

Similarly,  an American Airlines flight last month had to be diverted  after a passenger allegedly punched a flight attendant who asked him to stop kicking a fellow flyer’s seat.

A fellow passenger on that flight, from Texas to Montana, said the man was spitting at people, adding that she saw him banging his head against the window, and he worried the crew enough that the pilot declared a level two threat at about 1:50 p.m. and diverted to Texas’ Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.

Keith Edward Fagiana, of Las Vegas, was met by law enforcement and charged with interference with a flight crew upon arrival.

A woman claims she was almost barred from a Delta flight because she wasn't wearing a bra: 'It was humiliation'

  • A woman says she was almost barred from a Delta flight for not wearing a bra.
  • She claims was escorted off the plane and was only allowed to reboard if she put a jacket on.
  • The woman, a DJ, was wearing a baggy white t-shirt, according to a photo shared on X.

Insider Today

A woman claims that she was escorted off a Delta Air Lines plane and almost barred from the flight because she wasn't wearing a bra.

Lisa Archbold, a DJ who goes by the stage name 'DJette Kiwi,' was flying from Salt Lake City to San Francisco on January 22 after attending the Sundance Film Festival, according to the New Zealand Herald.

She told the outlet that she had a "super weird" interaction at the gate before boarding, but proceeded to her seat without giving it much thought.

But Archbold told the Herald that once she was seated she was approached by a crew member who loudly announced that she needed to speak with her privately.

The DJ told Yahoo! News Australia that the employee escorted her off the plane and scolded her for her "offensive attire," which Archbold said was described as "revealing."

Photos show Archbold wearing a baggy white t-shirt and white pants.

In a post on X, Archbold said she was treated "like a criminal" and claimed she was "extracted from a delta flight for not wearing a bra."

@Delta I was extracted from a delta flight for not wearing a bra. The gate attendant waited until the entire plane was seated, then asked to speak to me privately and escorted me off the plane, like a criminal.I was told “the official policy of @Delta is that women must cover up” pic.twitter.com/NuxiCrYf90 — DJette kiwi (@DJettekiwi) January 23, 2024

According to Yahoo! News Australia, Archbold said she was allowed to reboard the flight only once she had covered up with a jacket.

Delta does not have an official dress code for passengers. However, its US Contract of Carriage reserves the right to refuse transportation to passengers if their "conduct, attire, hygiene, or odor creates an unreasonable risk of offense or annoyance" to other passengers.

Archbold told the Herald that she felt as though Delta's policy was "weaponized" against her to "humiliate and abuse a woman."

Speaking of her experience, she said: "It was humiliation."

Although she received an apology by email from the airline, Archbold told the news outlet that it stopped short of acknowledging any wrongdoing.

Archbold told BI in a message: "My goal is a change in policy. Delta runs a heavy PR line of inclusivity. Let's see them put their policy where their PR is."

Delta Air Lines did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comment, which were sent outside of operating hours.

Business | Flight attendants picket Southern California airports over wages, work conditions

They say they're underpaid and not being compensated for downtime when they're still on the clock.

Hundreds of frustrated flight attendants converged on four Southern California airports Tuesday, Feb. 13, demanding higher wages and better working conditions.

Armed with picket signs reading, “Corporate greed doesn’t fly” and “Pay us or CHAOS,” employees with Alaska , United , American and other airlines said they’re underpaid and not being compensated for the time they spend boarding, deplaning and waiting between flights. They’re also demanding retirement benefits and more flexible schedules.

The rallies at Los Angeles International Airport, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, Ontario International Airport and San Diego International Airport were part of a “Worldwide Day of Action” that saw nearly 100,000 flight attendants from 24 airlines gather at 30 airports across the U.S., Guam and the U.K.

No flight disruptions were reported at the four area airports.

Two-thirds of the flight attendants are in labor negotiations with their employers, including Alaska, American, United, Southwest and Frontier airlines. They are represented by the Association of Flight Attendants, Association of Professional Flight Attendants and Transport Workers Union.

AFA-represented Alaska flight attendants upped the pressure Tuesday, announcing they voted to authorize a strike if management fails to improve work conditions.

AFA has a trademarked strike strategy known as CHAOS, or Create Havoc Around Our System. In that system, a strike could affect the entire system or a single flight. The union decides when, where and how to strike without notice to management or passengers.

“It’s frustrating,” said Tim Green, Alaska AFA president. “We’re not being paid for the time we’re on the ground, and that could easily be two to four hours between flights. We’re on the clock, but you can’t take a break to go to the dry cleaners or a doctor’s appointment.”

Green said 960 Alaska flight attendants based out of LAX earn a starting annual wage of $26,946 — about 20% less than what competing airlines pay.

“Most of us live in Southern California, and it’s not enough to keep up with the high housing costs,” the 49-year-old Tustin resident said. “That starting wage wouldn’t even cover a studio apartment.”

Alaska flight attendants last went on strike in 1993.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Alaska Airlines said it has been offering “industry-leading top-of-scale pay” for months, with an immediate 15% raise to the entire pay scale and additional raises every year.

“With six recently closed labor deals at the company and a tentative agreement reached in January for a new contract for our technicians, we’re hopeful to do the same for our flight attendants as soon as possible,” the airline said.

Alaska flight attendants picketed LAX and John Wayne Airport in December over the same issues.

Evelyn Konen, a flight attendant with American Airlines and an APFA ambassador, said her union is asking for a 33% pay hike.

“We believe that would be feasible,” the 34-year-old Redondo Beach resident said. “We all live in high-cost cities. Our new hires are based in Boston, New York and Miami. And with a starting wage of $27,000 a year … that won’t take you anywhere.”

American said it hopes to reach middle ground with the union.

“The proposal we’ve had on the table since September 2023 includes increased pay, the addition of boarding pay and other meaningful improvements,” the airline said Tuesday. “We remain at the negotiating table, ready to make a deal.”

APFA President Julie Hedrick, whose union represents 27,000 American flight attendants, said it’s time for the employees to get “a fair share of the value we create.”

“We’re telling management to stop playing games and negotiate the contracts that we’ve earned,” she said. “Flight attendants are speaking with one voice.”

Southwest said it is scheduled to meet next week with the Transport Workers Union and National Mediation Board to “continue working toward an agreement that benefits our flight attendants and Southwest.”

Southwest flight attendants approved a strike mandate last month after rejecting a tentative contract in February.

Similar protests were held Tuesday at airports in Las Vegas, Portland, New York and Seattle, among others.

“This industry doesn’t fly without us,” the three union presidents said in a statement. “And if management wants to continue to play games, they’ll learn just how true that is.”
