The post describes how the boy began vomiting intermittently in early July 2019. Different diagnoses were offered by medical professionals until late November, when a primary care doctor said that not only were Takis responsible for the erosion of the boy's stomach lining, they are also toxic to children and adults. 

"He is on an expensive medicine now to heal his stomach. The insurance doesn’t cover it. Please I urge you to not let your little ones eat these things. (It's not worth the pain it causes),” the post says.

The post is similar to a claim posted to social media in 2013, in which a physician blamed Takis for a 10-year-old girl's "extreme stomach distress" and a 16-month-old's throat cancer, according to Snopes . 

In 2017, a Facebook user posted an image of another post claiming Takis cause ulcers and a caption that says, "These chips are hurting and even killing our babies!"

Takis are a brand of corn tortilla chips vended by Mexico-based Barcel and known for its spicy hotness:

Takis Snacks by Barcel are tortilla snacks that resemble rolled tacos; this crunchy snack is coated with salsa and seasoned with lemon powder. They come in four flavors with varying heat intensities: Fuego (Hot Chili Pepper & Lemon), Salsa Brava (Hot Sauce), Takis Nitro (Habanero & Lime) and Crunchy Fajita (Taco Flavored). Takis (also known as Taquis) are owned by the Barcel company, who are manufacturers of tortilla snacks and potato chips, as well as other confectionary and snack foods. Barcel is a unit of the famous Grupo Bimbo Company, who are also owners of many other popular Mexican brands. Grupo Bimbo purchased a snack factory in Queretaro during the late 70s which later became known as Barcel when the famous title was born in February 9th, 1978. The brand’s popularity has spread ever since and many factories were inaugurated in Queretaro Norte, the State of Mexico, Mexicali Baja California, Merida Yucatan and Hidalgo.

An item that began circulating on the Internet in June 2013 presents a first-person account of a woman who took her ten-year-old daughter to an urgent care facility for treatment of extreme stomach distress, where a physician reportedly suggested the daughter's consumption of Takis was the cause of her stomach pains (even though the mother stated her daughter consumed just "3 small bags of Takis a month"). Additionally, according to this account, the physician asserted that "the harsh chemicals and seasoning in the chips cause corrosion in the throat and stomach," that Takis are "causing stomach ulcers in children," and that she was currently treating a 16-month-old patient for throat cancer brought about by the toddler's consumption of Takis:

Yesterday, I took my 10 year old daughter to Urgent Care in Lancaster with extreme stomach pain (two days off and on). After the Dr. evaluated her stomach and ran urine tested, she checked for tenderness, she found the area that was causing my daughter the pain. The Dr. then asked about what my daughter ate on a regular basis as well as what she had had within the last few days. (Keep in mind that we are pretty consistent with eating healthy and my daughter was having about 3 small bags of takis a month.) When my daughter told her she had takis, the Dr. warned her right away about the dangers of that product. The Dr. mentioned how she had a 16 month old patient in the hospital with throat cancer due to those chips! The toddles teeth failed to grow because even his gums were affected and now the toddler is at The Children's Hospital in LA undergoing chemo. The Dr. also advised me NOT to allow my children to eat ANY of those hot chips. The product that they use to make them is harsh on the mouth, throat, and stomach. PLEASE spread the word! STOP eating takis and hot chips!!! She explained how the harsh chemicals and seasoning in the chips cause corrosion in the throat and stomach. It is causing stomach ulcers in children. My daughter was given a 10 day treatment plan to prevent ulcers as the pain her her stomach was severe. PLEASE believe it and read up on the info online for yourself! I am making sure that everyone I come in contact with is aware of what we are unconsciously doing to ourselves and our children when we eat those things!

We consulted with some urgent care pediatricians of our acquaintance who told us that they had never treated, or heard of, any cases of children developing severe stomach pains linked to the consumption of Takis. Moreover, they said, no credible doctor would definitively pronounce that consumption of one type of food (or any other single factor) had "caused" a particular case of cancer — although relationships have been established between certain risk factors and the onset of cancer, no given case of cancer can be reliably attributed to one identifiable cause.

Some reports indicate that cases of children developing stomach aches after eating Takis and similar snack foods are known, but that the issue seems to be linked to children consuming those snacks in immoderate and excessive amounts far beyond the "3 small bags a month" referenced in the above account:

The spice [in Takis] increases stomach acidity, so children "get stomach aches, sometimes so terrible they're doubled over in pain," said Yvonne Juarez, chief of pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente-Fresno. "I've had patients go to the ER because of it. It's insane, absolutely insane." Melissa Ortiz, a Kaiser-Fresno dietitian, said it's rare for a child to stop at [consuming a single 1-ounce bag]. Too often, children and teens are eating 2 or 3 ounces of Hot Cheetos or Takis in a single sitting, she said. At that point, "it's not a snack, it's a meal." Gabriella Gaona, 16, of Fresno, said her mother no longer lets her eat either snack after she got sick and had to go to the hospital: "I had Takis for six months straight and that's all I would eat." Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine physician for Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, said, "A number of patients who have consumed [Flamin' Hot] Cheetos in excess have complained of pain in their upper abdomen, rising up into their chest, likely due to due to the red peppers and spice contained in the snack."

As well, some physicians have noted that children have been taken to emergency rooms after eating Takis and similar snacks not because they were ill, but because their excessive consumption of those snacks resulted in misinterpreted symptoms:

St. Louis Children's Hospital pediatrician Dr. Kathleen Berchelmann says Flamin' Hot Cheetos contain a lot of red food dye and when kids eat large amounts of them, eventually it turns their stool bright red or orange. Parents, she says, falsely believe they're seeing blood in the stool and take the kids to the ER to find out nothing is wrong. "So even though we might eat some foods with red food dye in them regularly, our stool doesn't usually become discolored unless you eat huge amounts of it," Berchelmann said. "Flamin' Hot Cheetos is one food that people will eat enormous amounts of and will see a change in their stool." Berchelmann says parents could use this as a teaching moment, talking with their kids about gluttony and eating things in moderation.

However, some critics maintain that children commonly over-consume such snack foods because the foods themselves are engineered to promote that behavior:

Some scientists and doctors cite the addictive qualities of food products like Cheetos as one reason why children may overeat them. “It’s something that has been engineered so that it is fattier and saltier and more novel to the point where our body, brain, and pleasure centers react to it more strongly than if we were eating, say, a handful of nuts,” Ashley Gearhardt, a clinical psychology professor at the University of Michigan, told the Chicago Tribune. “Going along with that, we are seeing those classic signs of addiction, the cravings and loss of control and preoccupation with it.” Because Flamin’ Hot Cheetos have become so popular among young people, other snack companies have created spicy products to compete: Hot ‘N Spicy Crunchy Nuggetz, Sizzlin’ Cheese Flavored Twists, and Sizzlin’ Hot Crunchy Kurls, for example.

The bottom line remains that children should avoid spicy snack foods and other processed snacks in large quantities in order to avoid gastritis and other health risks, but no solid evidence indicates that moderate consumption of such snack foods puts youngsters at risk for stomach ulcers or cancer.

I’ve seen some pretty crazy accusations about Takis online. Social media posts have blamed these hot snacks for causing cancer and ulcers in children, and some school districts have banned them. But today, let’s examine: Are Takis actually that bad?

Takis are not the healthiest snack. They have vegetable oil, sugar, MSG, artificial colors, and the preservative TBHQ. Each serving is high in sodium (420mg), with only 1g of fiber. Some children who eat excessive amounts of Takis have reportedly gone to the hospital for stomach pain and gastritis.

Below, I’ll take a close look at Takis ingredients and nutrition. I’ll compare them to Hot Cheetos, and we’ll explore whether they’re good for weight loss. I’ll also address whether Takis might cause cancer or even burn holes in your stomach.

1. What Are Takis Made Of?

Let’s start by looking at some actual Takis ingredients. Do they contain anything you should be avoiding?

Takis Fuego Ingredients: Corn Flour (Processed With Lime), Vegetable Oil (Palm And/Or Soybean And/Or Canola Oil), Seasoning [Salt, Maltodextrin, Citric Acid, Sugar, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Onion Powder, Yeast Extract, Red 40 Lake, Yellow 6 Lake, Natural And Artificial Flavors, Sodium Bicarbonate, Soybean Oil, Chili Pepper (Chile), Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate, TBHQ (Antioxidant)].

Here’s what I noticed about these ingredients:

  • Takis have processed vegetable oil . These highly processed oils add empty calories, and some of these oils (like palm oil) add saturated fat , too. Below, we’ll look at the amount of fat in Takis , and how it compares to other snacks.
  • Takis have added sugar . Takis are not really known as a “sweet” treat—but they do have some added sugar. But how much sugar do they really have? See below for Takis carb and sugar content .
  • Takis have artificial colors . Takis Fuego have Red 40 Lake and Yellow 6 Lake . Takis Blue Heat have Blue 1 Lake . All these artificial colors are still being tested for safety concerns. The biggest concerns have to do with hyperactivity in children, and possibly cancer. See below for more.
  • Takis have TBHQ. TBHQ is a controversial preservative used in Takis. It’s FDA approved, but some people have reported “vision disturbances” linked to TBHQ. Animal studies have shown side effects like tumors, liver enlargement, convulsions, and paralysis. ( source )
  • Takis have MSG . Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a somewhat controversial ingredient. When you look into the actual science, there’s not much evidence that it’s any worse than table salt… But if you prefer to avoid MSG, be aware: Takis do have MSG.

So, Takis don’t look very good from an ingredients perspective. They have several highly processed and/or artificial ingredients. (For more on Takis ingredient details, see the section below: Are Takis vegan? )

But it’s not just ingredients that matter… The quantity of each ingredient also matters for nutrition. So, next let’s look at the actual amount of carbs, fat, sodium, and other nutrients in Takis.

2. Are Takis High in Carbs?

Takis have 17 grams of carbs per serving, which is pretty high. The carb content of Takis is similar to Hot Cheetos, Cheez-It, and other popular snacks. The main ingredient in Takis is corn flour, which is high in carbs. However, Takis only have 1g of sugar per serving.

Takis are on the lower end in terms of carbs per serving here… But it’s not enough to make a big difference for most people tightly controlling their carb intake. That said, Takis at least avoid the considerable sugar content that Wheat Thins have.

3. Are Takis High in Fat?

Takis have 8 grams of fat per serving, including 2.5 grams of saturated fat. Takis are baked, not fried. However, Takis still contain processed vegetable oil. They are not a low-fat food.

Many people understand that baking is healthier than frying because less oil can be used. But don’t assume too much. Takis still have 8 grams of total fat per serving, a good portion of which comes from the oil. About half of the calories in Takis come from fat.

4. Are Takis High in Sodium?

Takis have a high amount of sodium, with 420 mg per serving of 12 pieces. That’s almost 70% more sodium than Hot Cheetos, and over double the sodium in Wheat Thins or Triscuits. Currently, a low-sodium flavor of Takis is not available.

As you can see, most of these snacks are pretty similar when it comes to sodium. But Takis are the exception, with much more sodium per serving. Eating too much sodium increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends limiting your sodium intake to 2,300mg per day, which is about 5.5 servings of Takis. However, the AHA is “moving toward an ideal limit” of 1,500mg per day, which is only about 3.6 servings of Takis.

5. Are the Artificial Colors in Takis Safe?

Takis has artificial colors like Yellow 6 Lake, Red 40 Lake, and Blue 1 Lake. Research suggests that artificial colors cause hyperactivity and behavioral issues in some children. There are also concerns around possible carcinogens in artificial colors used in Takis.

I’ve made dedicated posts about each of these artificial colors before. But here are some of the specific health concerns people have:

  • Yellow 6 :  Yellow 6 often contains known carcinogenic contaminants, including benzidine and 4-amino-biphenyl . These contaminants have only been documented at low levels where it shouldn’t be cause for concern, however. There were also animal trials where Yellow 6 resulted in kidney/adrenal tumors—but this result is disputed. ( source ,  source )
  • Red 40 : Red 40 has small amounts of benzidene, which is a known carcinogen. It’s legally allowed because the amount is small enough to have no presumed effect. The EU requires foods with Red 40 to bear a  warning  saying it “may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.”
  • Blue 1 :  An unpublished study on Blue 1 suggested that it may cause tumors in mice. In addition, a test-tube study found that Blue 1 inhibited nerve cell development. So the effect on unborn fetuses may be of concern. ( source )

All of these artificial colors are still being tested on animals to determine their safety.  The most established problem is  hyperactivity in kids . Some governments around the world have taken steps to add warnings or ban some of these dyes.

It’s actually hard to find good credible sources on which of these dyes are actually banned in which countries. There seems to be misinformation online about this. I found the most credible references to  Yellow 6  being banned in Japan and several European countries.

6. Are Takis Good for Weight Loss?

Takis are not the best food for weight loss, as they contain multiple highly processed ingredients like vegetable oil and sugar. The high sodium content of Takis also makes them tempting to over-eat. However, Takis can potentially be eaten in moderation on a weight loss diet.

One of the most important principles for weight loss is calorie density. Foods with low calorie density fill up your stomach with fewer calories. This makes it easier to eat fewer calories and be satisfied. In contrast, high calorie density foods can be easier to overeat. ( source )

One of the foods with the highest calorie density is vegetable oil. Refined sugars and flours have high calorie density, too. Takis have several such processed ingredients, so there is a risk of overeating them.

Another thing to consider is that Takis only have 1g of fiber per serving. Other snacks can help fill you up with more fiber and keep you better satisfied on a weight-loss diet.

So, can Takis make you fat? Yes, they can potentially contribute to weight gain. But by itself, a few servings of Takis will not ruin your weight loss diet, either. Weight loss depends on your overall diet and lifestyle.

If you’re burning more calories than you’re eating each day/week, you should lose weight. Eating Takis or other “processed foods” on occasion will not automatically ruin your diet, as long as the overall calorie deficit remains in tact.

  • Do Takis speed up your metabolism (because of being spicy)? Spicy foods like Takis can temporarily increase metabolism by about 8%. But this amount is generally considered negligible. Therefore, eating Takis for weight-loss is not advised.
  • How many calories are in one Taki? Each Taki has about 12.5 calories.

7. Are Takis “Processed Food”?

Takis are considered processed food, as they contain vegetable oil, sugar, MSG, artificial colors, and only 1 gram of fiber per serving.

It’s widely understood today that healthy food tends to be minimally processed. When we eat food in its more natural forms, we get more nutrients and fiber than if it’s been processed into flours, flakes, syrups, or oils.

In practical terms, the easiest way to spot “processed food” is to check the ingredients list for refined oils , sugars , flours , artificial ingredients (sweeteners, colors, additives), or lots of salt . And indeed, Takis have several of these ingredients.

It may be debate-able whether Takis count as “junk food” or “ultra processed,” but they are clearly processed food , at least.

8. Do Takis Cause Cancer?

Takis are not known to cause cancer. That said, the artificial colors used in Takis have been associated with some cancer-related concerns.

To start with, let’s discuss Red 40 , which is used in some Takis flavors. So far, studies have  not   shown any cancer-causing effect from Red 40—but unfortunately, that’s not the full story.

Red 40  has  been shown to contain small amounts of benzidene, which is a known carcinogen.  It is legally allowed because the amount is so small, there is no presumed negative effect. ( source )

However, some people still worry about the benzidene in Red 40. It was noted in one scientific journal that the FDA only checks for free contaminants—but there’s more  bound benzidene  in Red 40 that may get released in the presence of intestinal enzymes. ( source )

So, there is not strong evidence that Red 40 causes cancer—but it’s hard to know the long-term effects for sure. Now let’s look at two other colors found in Takis products.

It’s also been documented that Yellow 6 often has known carcinogenic contaminants, including  benzidine  and  4-amino-biphenyl . Again, these contaminants have been documented at low enough levels that it should not cause problems.

There are also some animal trials where Yellow 6 resulted in the formation of kidney/adrenal tumors—but this is disputed by the industry and by the FDA itself. ( source ,  source )

And lastly, Blue 1 , which is found in Takis Blue Heat—there is only weak evidence pointing to cancer-related concerns. An unpublished study on Blue 1 suggested it may cause tumors in mice. So, more research may be warranted there.

Overall, there is not strong evidence that Takis cause cancer. Theoretically, some Takis ingredients may increase cancer risk—but the same could be said of many, many processed foods.

9. Do Takis Burn Holes in Your Stomach?

Takis can cause stomach pain, irritation, and gastritis for some people—particularly for children who eat excessive amounts. However, there is no solid evidence of Takis causing ulcers or actually burning holes in anyone’s stomach.

Some claims about the health risks of Takis may be overblown on social media —don’t believe everything you read. However, there are some real risks, especially for children who eat Takis in large quantities.

Several E.R. physicians and pediatricians have been quoted saying they regularly get children coming in with stomach pain from eating Takis and other hot snacks. One physician mentioned seeing frequent cases of “ ulcer-related stuff ” caused by the hot snacks.

One child’s hospital visit caused a media stir after the girl had to get her gallbladder removed . But it should be mentioned—gallbladder issues are not generally associated with consuming certain foods.

10. Which Is Healthier, Takis or Hot Cheetos?

Takis have more saturated fat, more sodium, and more sugar per serving compared to Hot Cheetos. Therefore, Takis seem to be a bit worse than Hot Cheetos from a health perspective. However, neither snack is very healthy, as they are both highly processed.

Here’s a table comparing the Takis and Hot Cheetos in several key nutrition areas:

Most health authorities recommend limiting saturated fat —so it’s not great that Takis have about 67% more saturated fat than Hot Cheetos.

But the biggest nutritional difference between Takis and Hot Cheetos is the sodium content. Takis have much more sodium than Hot Cheetos. (See more about sodium above .)

So, are Takis worse than Hot Cheetos? Probably. But in any case, the nutritional profile is pretty similar between these two snacks. And neither one is very healthy.

Note: There are different flavors and varieties of both Takis and Hot Cheetos. So, please take that into consideration to make your final decision.

11. Are Takis Vegan?

Takis Fuego, Blue Heat, and Nitro are vegan. Takis Guacamole and Crunchy Fajitas are not vegan. Below is the full breakdown of which Takis flavors are vegan and why:

Stomach aches can become a distracting discomfort that keeps you from some of your favorite activities. The internet is full of information about this, and fortunately, we've dug through it to find that first, you should resort to quick fixes such as going to the bathroom . Next, consider trying home remedies . If you suffer from chronic indigestion, you may need to make continuous choices about your diet and medications . Finally, limit the number of stomach aches you get by taking preventative action .

Trying Simple and Quick Fixes

Step 1 Visit the bathroom.

  • Don't try to force a bowel movement by straining or pushing. Undue force can cause serious complications such as hemorrhoids.
  • If you have blood in your stool or your vomit, seek medical attention immediately; this is called hematochezia and hematemesis, respectively.

Step 2 Apply a warm compress to your stomach.

  • If you don't have any of the items listed above, fill a pillowcase or clean sock with some rice and microwave it for a minute or two.
  • For example, lie on your back with your legs and feet elevated, or crunch your knees to your chest while rocking gently. Elevating your feet will reduce pressure on the abdominal region, release pent-up gas, and relieve discomfort.

Step 3 Let yourself vomit.

  • If you're nauseated but can't vomit, try nibbling on some soda crackers.
  • Vomiting can cause dehydration quickly, so drink electrolyte-supplemented sports drinks if you're purging more than once. These replenish the sodium and potassium in your body which it needs in order to fight illness.

Step 4 Take a hot bath.

  • While massaging, focus on breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Deep breathing can help relax your muscles and distract you from the pain.

Step 6 Take an over-the-counter medication.

  • If pain persists after taking bismuth, try a medication with a low dose of acetaminophen rather than aspirin or ibuprofen. Just be sure not to overuse this drug, as it can eventually lead to liver damage. Taking Home Remedies

Step 1 Ingest prunes or other high-fiber foods.

  • If constipation persists after consuming fiber-rich foods and drinks, try a mild laxative such as a water-soluble powder or sennoside-containing tea.
  • A cup of coffee can also stimulate your digestive tract muscles and cause a bowel movement. Don't gulp it down all day long, though. Coffee is a natural diuretic, so too much of it can cause dehydration and exacerbate constipation. [10] X Research source
  • Prune juice is known to help stimulate the bowels and get them moving. Drink a small glass in the morning, and a small glass in the evening to help with constipation.

Step 2 Drink peppermint, chamomile, or ginger tea.

  • You can also chew on boiled mint leaves or drink ginger water rather than drinking teas made from these herbs. To make ginger water, toss a few chunks of ginger in hot water, steep, and strain.

Treating Chronic Indigestion or Heartburn

Step 1 Watch what you eat.

  • Once you've noticed your bad mealtime habits, correct them by eating smaller meals over a longer period of time. Eating slowly allows your stomach more time to digest and smaller portions lessen its workload.
  • Problems with the stomach after eating is called non-ulcer dyspepsia, which is also known as indigestion.

Step 2 Avoid oily and spicy foods.

  • Instead, opt for bland foods such as oatmeal, broths, toast, applesauce, crackers, and rice. These items are easy to digest and thus won't put undue stress on your digestive system.

Step 3 Wear clothes that are loose around your waistline.

  • This doesn't mean you have to ditch your favorite skinny jeans. Just make sure you slip into some looser fitting clothing before digging into a big meal.
  • Although indigestion is thought to be the cause of overactive stomach acid, it can also be the result of insufficient stomach acid. Ask your doctor if you think this could be your issue, and try a hydrochloric acid supplement if they recommend it.
  • No matter which supplement you decide to try, be sure to follow the dosage directions and consult a doctor if you experience any side effects.

Step 4 Add a probiotic to your diet.

  • Nitrates are often used for heart disease as they widen blood vessels, and common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen are typically used for addressing pain.

Step 6 Rest after eating.

  • If you've just eaten a large meal with a lot of fat in it, you may need to wait two to three hours before vigorous exercise.

Step 7 Consult your doctor about a prescription medication.

  • For example, your doctor might decide to put you on a proton pump inhibitor or an H2-receptor antagonist. Preventing Future Stomach Aches

Step 1 Manage stress through stretching and meditation.

  • Recent studies suggest that deep breathing can also alleviate mild heartburn. Unlike most preventative medications, breathing exercises carry no unwanted side-effects, so there's no downside to trying it out next time you experience a bit of heartburn! [21] X Research source

Step 2 Exercise regularly.

  • If you take up long-distance running, you might find yourself more prone to bouts of diarrhea due to the sustained jarring impact and decreased blood flow to your bowels. You can limit these adverse side-effects by avoiding caffeine and sugar substitutes before setting off on a run.

Step 3 Keep a food...

  • For example, don't just write, "Pizza. Stomach ache afterward." Instead, say something like, "Two slices of pepperoni pizza. Half hour later, experienced sharp heartburn for about an hour."

Step 4 Manage your weight.

  • To shed some unwanted pounds , get regular aerobic exercise, cook healthy meals, hydrate frequently, and do resistance-based strength training.

Step 5 Drink 2.2 liters (74 fl oz) of water per day.

  • Drink water at room temperature. Cold water can present a shock to your system, slow digestion, and even cause mild stomach aches.

Step 6 Get plenty of rest.

  • If your stomach ache is keeping you up at night, ask your doctor what kind of medication you can take to promote sleep.

Sleeping on your stomach isn't inherently "bad," but it can have some adverse consequences. Lying on your stomach for prolonged periods can increase pressure on your back, neck, and shoulders. However, stomach sleeping can benefit people who snore or have difficulty breathing.

Risks of Stomach Sleeping

Most healthcare providers don't recommend stomach sleeping, especially if you suffer from neck or back pain.

Sleeping on your stomach flattens out the natural curve of your spine and increases pressure on your lower back. In addition, it requires you to keep your head turned to the side, which can lead to a stiff or sore neck .

Sleeping with your face pressed against the bed—which can happen when sleeping on your stomach or your side—distorts the skin on your face, which can lead to the development of wrinkles.

Stomach sleeping can also cause issues during pregnancy , particularly in the second and third trimesters when the belly expands more quickly. During this phase, sleeping on your stomach—or flat on your back—can put pressure on an important blood vessel in the abdomen and lower your blood pressure.

Healthcare professionals recommend that pregnant people sleep on their left side to improve blood flow to the uterus and the fetus.

When Could Sleeping on Your Stomach Be Beneficial?

Sleeping on your stomach—called the prone position —isn't all bad. Sleeping in this position can reduce snoring.

Lying prone can improve breathing for people with lung issues. Gravity helps bring the lungs into a position that makes it easier to inflate as you breathe. Sometimes, healthcare providers recommend prone positioning during respiratory illness to reduce the risk of a collapsed lung ( pneumothorax )—a condition that occurs when air gets between your lungs and your chest wall.

Tips for Sleeping on Your Stomach

If you don't have pain and you plan to continue sleeping on your stomach, there are things you can do to help keep your spine in better alignment and reduce your risk of developing pain:

  • Use a thin pillow under your head or no pillow at all
  • Place a thin pillow under your pelvis
  • Choose a mattress with medium to firm pressure
  • Perform stretches in bed before you get up

How to Retrain Yourself to Stop Stomach Sleeping

Most people do not spend the whole night sleeping in one position—and lying on your stomach is the least preferred sleeping position in the general population. However, if you are a stomach sleeper, you may wonder how to learn to sleep in a different position.

The ideal position for sleeping is one that supports the natural curves of your spine. This can be accomplished by lying on your back or your side. Use a pillow designed to support the curve in your neck.

If you lie on your back, place a pillow underneath your knees or between your knees if you choose to lie on your side .

Consider using a body pillow on each side of your body to help keep you on your back or side while you sleep.

Changing your sleeping position will take time. You might start on your back or side, then wake up to find that you have rolled back onto your stomach. With consistency, you'll become more comfortable with your new sleeping habits.

Tips for Improving Sleep

In addition to finding a comfortable sleeping position, there are other things you can do to improve your chances of getting a good night's sleep .

  • Avoid electronics one hour before bed
  • Establish a bedtime relaxation ritual
  • Keep the room cool (between 60 to 68 degrees)
  • Keep the room dark
  • Limit caffeine intake in the afternoon/evening
  • Sleep for at least seven hours
  • Wake up at the same time every day

Sleeping on your stomach isn't always bad, but it has the most potential adverse side effects of any sleep position. Stomach sleeping increases pressure on the spine and keeps the neck in a rotated position. It can contribute to developing wrinkles and pose blood flow issues for pregnant people. If you're a stomach sleeper, you can train yourself to sleep in a different position with patience and plenty of pillows for support.

Norovirus is on the rise so here is how to avoid the hyper-contagious stomach bug

Norovirus cases are spiking, especially in the northeast United States , but experts say the nasty stomach illness is easily preventable.

The latest data shows a sharp rise in the northeast, while other parts of the US are also seeing a steady increase in cases of the stomach bug.

Here is what you need to know about avoiding norovirus.

What are the symptoms of norovirus?

According to the CDC , the most common symptoms of this stomach bug are diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain.

If you catch it, you might also experience a fever, headaches or body aches, although these are less common.

Symptoms will usually appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and tend to clear up within one to three days.

Those with norovirus can be left severely dehydrated from vomiting or experiencing diarrhoea multiple times a day.

How does norovirus spread?

Norovirus could be passed to you if you eat food or drink liquids which are contaminated with the virus.

It could also come from touching objects with the bacteria on them and then putting your fingers in your mouth without washing your hands.

A person could also be infected by accidentally getting tiny particles of faeces or vomit in their mouth while caring for someone with the virus, the CDC says.

Someone with the illness can shed “billions of norovirus particles that you can’t see without a microscope”, the CDC added. Patients are at their most contagious a few days after feeling better.

Common places where the virus spreads include daycare centres, cruise ships and conventions.

How can you stop yourself from getting norovirus?

The main piece of advice from the CDC is to wash your hands often, especially after using the toilet or before eating, preparing or handling food.

Hand sanitiser doesn’t work well against the virus, so soap and water are the most effective way.

The CDC also recommends thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables, cooking oysters and other shellfish to a temperature of 145F (62.7C) and to routinely clean and sanitise kitchen utensils, counters and surfaces.

Experts also say you should not prepare or handle food while you are sick, or care for others.

It’s also important to wash clothing, sheets or towels well, especially if they have vomit or faeces on them. Handling items with care is also essential, by using rubber gloves and avoiding shaking them.

Is there any medication for norovirus?

Unfortunately not.

The CDC recommends drinking plenty of fluids, to replace those lost in vomiting and diarrhoea. Oral rehydration fluids bought over the counter at a pharmacy may help the process along.

In children, signs of dehydration include crying with few or no tears, as well as being unusually fussy or sleepy.

Is the rise in norovirus cases unusual?

This latest rise isn’t necessarily unusual. Average case numbers for the past two years show a spike at the start of 2022 and 2023.

Numbers typically trail off again by April.

We’re four years into the pandemic, and by this point, most Americans have had Covid at least once. But when the virus comes for us (again), it can still feel just as alarming as your first bout.

Here’s a guide to what Covid looks like now and how to treat it.

The most common Covid symptoms haven’t changed much since the start of the pandemic, and they remain consistent for the latest dominant variant, JN.1 , said Dr. Soniya Gandhi, the associate chief medical officer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. They include fatigue, sore throat, congestion, runny nose, headache, body aches and cough.

“All or any of those in isolation can still be Covid,” Dr. Gandhi said.

Some people may develop conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, or experience gastrointestinal issues, like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, but those symptoms are rarer. Anecdotally, experts said, one of the most notable symptoms early in the pandemic — the loss of taste and smell — also appears to be less common these days.

“The biggest change is that people are having milder symptoms overall,” said Dr. Amanda Casto, an acting assistant professor of allergy and infectious diseases at the University of Washington. That’s because virtually everyone has some pre-existing immunity from vaccines, a prior infection or both.

While Covid is mild for most people, it can be dangerous and even fatal for some. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that, as of mid-February, more than 21,000 people were hospitalized with Covid, and there had been roughly 10,000 Covid-related deaths in 2024.

Severe illness is a lot less prevalent now than during the first few years of the pandemic, “but we’re still seeing it,” said Dr. Stuart Ray, a professor in the division of infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore. The people who are getting sickest tend to be those with compromised immune systems and underlying health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes or lung problems. Adults over age 65 are also at higher risk for severe infections.

Since mild Covid can look like a cold or the flu, it’s important to test yourself if you have symptoms or have had a known exposure, Dr. Gandhi said. Knowing what you have can affect your treatment and how long you isolate from others.

On March 1, the C.D.C. updated its guidance for preventing the spread of Covid and other respiratory viruses. The agency recommended that people isolate until their symptoms have started to improve and they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours. The agency acknowledged that people may still be contagious at this point and should continue to take precautions, like masking and physical distancing, for the next five days.

The antiviral pill Paxlovid is very effective against severe Covid, reducing the risk of death by 73 percent if taken within the first five days of an infection, according to a preliminary study conducted by the National Institutes of Health. Experts urged people who are high-risk to contact their doctors about getting a prescription as soon as they have symptoms or test positive.

“If you’re elderly or you have comorbidities, before you even get worse, you should already seek medical care,” said Dr. Bernard Camins, the medical director for infection prevention at the Mount Sinai Health System in New York. “Your health care provider will then evaluate you if you’re a candidate for antivirals.”

Paxlovid isn’t recommended for everyone. It can interact with several medications, including common ones used to lower blood pressure or prevent blood clots, and it’s also not advised for people with severe kidney disease. If you can’t take Paxlovid, the drug remdesivir could be an option, but it has to be delivered intravenously, so it’s less convenient and harder to obtain.

Paxlovid also doesn’t appear to provide much benefit to young, healthy adults whose risk of severe infection is low, so it isn’t broadly recommended for those groups.

For most people, Covid symptoms can be managed at home and treated like any other respiratory illness, with an emphasis on rest and staying hydrated. “If you have congestion or cough, you’re losing more fluids than you normally would,” Dr. Casto said. “So I would definitely recommend that people stay on top of fluid.”

If you have a fever or body aches, take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin). You can also take over-the-counter cold and flu medicines with decongestants or cough suppressants, though the experts didn’t recommend them strongly because they don’t work for everybody and can cause drowsiness.

When to seek medical care

If you’re experiencing shortness of breath — meaning you can’t catch your breath or are taking quick and shallow breaths — it’s important to seek medical attention right away.

“The thing that I worry most about is the breathing,” Dr. Casto said. “That’s the most concerning sign, because people can get” worse really quickly. If you’re having trouble breathing, she advised going to the emergency room rather than to your doctor or an urgent care clinic. Experts also said you should see a provider if you experience confusion or chest pain.

If your symptoms don’t improve after several days, or improve and then regress, it could be a sign you have a secondary infection like pneumonia, Dr. Casto said. In that case, or if you’re concerned about your symptoms at all, don’t hesitate to call your doctor.
