But, in a world where we’re often separated from other humans via a screen, your personal bio is one of the easiest ways for a company, colleague, or a potential lead to learn more about you.

‍ If you don’t know what to include or how to get started, we’ve pulled together some personal bio examples that showcase a handful of creative and engaging ways to present yourself on your social media accounts, your personal website, and on any bylined articles you write outside of your site.

The business case for personal bios: why you should write one

You might wonder what the big deal is—it’s just a bio, right? Do people even read them? The answer is actually, yes; they do. Personal bios can be a great way to find out more about the person behind a website or an article. This helps establish a connection and encourages readers to relate to you. 

The thing is, you might not think a lot of people care about where you went to school or what you like to do in your spare time, but you just don’t know who’s reading your professional bio.

It might be a hotshot manager for your dream company who also loves to spend their weekends kayaking the coast. Or it might be the marketer for a well-known brand looking for a writer .

Learning little nuggets of information about you can put you ahead of other candidates they’re researching or other freelancers they’re in talks with. It could be the difference between getting that contract and not. 

What’s the difference between a personal bio and a resume?

Your resume is a list of your professional roles. Your personal bio digs deeper than this and gives readers an insight into things like: 

  • Your interests outside of work
  • Your backstory
  • What gets you up in the morning 
  • Your passions and values 
  • Your goals 

Understanding this information can help them see if you’d be a good fit, or if you have the personal qualities they’re looking for in someone they want to work with. This information also helps you connect better with like-minded people.

Say, for example, you’re scrolling through Twitter, see a fun Tweet, and click on the person’s bio only to find out they also run 5km every evening and are passionate about addressing climate change. Chances are, you’re going to want to connect with them. 

How to write a personal bio

Before we share some creative bio examples, let’s take a look at what your personal biography should include. Bear in mind that this will vary depending on what platform you’re posting it on (platforms like Twitter and Instagram have a limited word count).

However, you can have a “master” bio that you pull snippets from for other platforms. Not only does this keep your messaging cohesive across platforms, but it makes it easy to get a bio together at short notice because you already have all the information you need written down. 

What to include in a bio on your site

For this ‌exercise, let’s focus on what you need to include in a personal bio on your website. This will be your “master” bio as it’ll probably be the longest and go into the most detail.

People who are poking around on your website have already shown an interest in who you are and what you do, so they’re more likely to stick around and read a longer bio. Here’s what you should include:

  • Your name: obviously, you need to state your name. Most people choose to include their full name, including surname, at the start of their bio. However, if your website URL or personal brand is already your full name, you can shorten it to just your first name. 
  • Your position: your current position and the tasks you’re responsible for should get a mention. This is particularly important if you’re looking for jobs or are writing a bio for a networking platform like LinkedIn. 
  • Your work experience: mention any key roles you’ve held in the past and how you got to where you are today. Stories like this show readers your journey and give an insight into your specialisms and professional skills. 
  • What you do and who you do it for: kind of like stating your “niche”, talking about what exactly it is you do (like graphic design or paid ad campaigns), and who you do it for (like finance companies or busy e-commerce owners) can help readers identify if you’re a good fit. 
  • What you do outside of work: personal bios should be more personal than a resume or professional bio and should therefore include personal details about what you like to do when you’re not working. Do you frequent pop-up restaurants? Attend dog shows with your puppy? Rock climb in the mountains? 
  • Professional accomplishments: talk about what you’ve achieved both at work and outside of work. This gives readers an idea about the things you value and what you might be able to achieve for them (it’s also a great talking point for people who want to reach out). 
  • Personal story: share a personal, creative story to add a splash of personality. It can be anything from the disastrous first birthday party you held for your daughter to the time you were taken in by a local family after getting lost in Mongolia. Don't forget to add a custom image !

How often should you refresh your personal bio? 

The life you live now isn’t the same life you were living ten, five, or even two years ago. Your personal bio should reflect your current situation, which means it’ll probably need to be regularly updated.

If you’re not sure about when to give it a refresh, consider:

  • When you land a new job 
  • When you achieve a big milestone (either at work or in your personal life)
  • When your old one doesn’t have the same ring to it 

Schedule time every few months to go back over your personal bio and see if everything is still true and up-to-date. 

Where to display your personal bio 

Your personal bio can be displayed anywhere that you might want people to find out more about you. Often, this will be places like social media, your website, guest post bylines, or your speaker profile, but you can also include it in other marketing materials like flyers for events you’re hosting or the blurb for your latest ebook. 

  • Twitter: cramming a personal bio into 160 characters can be hard, but it can also be a great lesson in identifying what information matters the most. Use up as many of the characters as you can, and use them wisely..
  • LinkedIn: the summary section of your LinkedIn profile gives you up to 2,000 characters to use. This is the ideal place to share your “master” bio.
  • Instagram: at 150 characters, you have just a few words to explain who you are and what you do on Instagram—use them wisely.
  • Personal website: people who land on your website are already interested in you—share your “master” bio here in all its glory. 
  • Guest posts: bylined articles need a couple of sentences about the author. Make it engaging to encourage readers to click through to your site or remember your name. 
  • Speaker profile: if you speak at events or conferences, you’ll need a short but sweet speaker bio that gets attendees interested in your session.

How to Write a Creative Personal Bio (with Examples)

Writing a personal bio requires you to look inward at the passions, goals and desires driving your work. For that reason, even just thinking about writing a bio can cause a flurry of fear and self-doubt.

Despite this, one truth remains: Having a professional bio that you’re proud of can open new, fulfilling doors for your creative career.

Whether you’re a maker, a designer or simply someone who feels creatively driven, this non-intimidating guide will make it easier to explain yourself and your life’s work.

Brainstorming questions

If your bio writing efforts have never gotten further than a blank page or a blinking cursor, I totally get it. Fortunately, writing about yourself is much easier when you have a little bit of inspiration and direction.

These are questions I’ve devised to help you think deeply about your personal and professional passions:

  • Think back to your oldest memory of using this passion or skill in action. (If you can’t think of a specific moment, a general timeframe is just fine. Ex: I loved writing personal essays in the sixth grade.)  What was happening in your life at this moment? Why did this particular thing mean so much to you?
  • What people have inspired you throughout life? It can be a parent, a friend, teacher or mentor. This person doesn’t have to be real, either. It could be a hero/heroine, or a character in a book or movie.
  • After you’ve chosen your muse(s), you might consider: what would your career path look like without this influence? This might help you better compartmentalize this figure’s contributions to your creative life.
  • How does it feel to do the work that you do? Why do you do it?  Consider the aspects of your daily life that are enhanced by this special talent or passion. How does this inform and enhance your creative mind?
  • How does your work benefit the lives of others? Why is their life a little bit better after experiencing your work/products/services?

As you explore these questions, try not to get too caught up in writing something perfect.  As author and columnist Meghan Daum once suggested in a memoir writing workshop I took: w rite with the liberation of complete privacy.

Articulating your skill sets

Every professional bio should discuss creative skills , knowledge and expertise. I’m not just talking about including your college degree, either. In fact, the knowledge you’ve gained out in the world and in a professional context is likely more impressive.

Despite the importance of a well-articulated skill set, however, this is an area where we humble creative folks often struggle. I know this both from personal experience and from working with creative professionals and entrepreneurs. One reason this is so difficult is because skills sometimes feel intangible. For example, let’s say you formatted a PDF in InDesign once – does that mean you can put  graphic design under your list of skills? Maybe you oversaw an important design project at your last job – are you allowed to put project management on your resume?

Its normal to feel unsure about whether or not you’re qualified in a certain area. To make the process easier, only include a skill in your bio if it meets the following criteria:

  • It plays an important role in your creative goals
  • Knowing the skill makes you more competitive or helps you stand out professionally
  • You have a specific example of how you’ve employed it in a professional capacity
  • If someone were to ask about that skill, its easy for you to explain how you used it and what effect it had (and can provide visual examples where applicable)

Formatting your professional bio

Now that you’ve worked through some (if not all) of the questions above, its time to make these ideas coherent. One way to organize your thoughts and ideas is to separate them into different categories.

Try to copy/paste or rewrite the ideas you’ve penned into the following categories:

Personal history

ex: my grandmother handed me a paint brush at age 8, we often went to plein air oil painting classes together, this cultivated my love of painting nature scenes

ex: freelance designer working with multiple agencies in the health and fitness space

ex: Social media curating, digital illustration, gallery management, Adobe Creative Suite

You’ll then want to put these notes and ideas into a hierarchy within each category. You’ll likely have to cut some things out in order to keep your bio short and sweet, so prioritizing them will make that process easier.

What’s the standard bio length?

I’ve found it helpful to first write a longer, more detailed bio that’s around ~200 words (try not to go longer than that). Once this go-to bio is nailed down, you can repurpose it into short tag lines or briefs when needed.

Using the same base text will help you create a consistent and powerful brand identity across social media, LinkedIn, creative portfolios, company about pages and the like. Plus – it’ll save you the stress of writing a new bio every time someone asks!

Next, its time to articulate your passions, work and skills into smooth, coherent sentences.

The marketing business

Writing your biography can seem almost as challenging as writing a book. But it is a necessary part of publishing your writing. Let's look at how to write a bio that delivers.

Where to Find Author Bio Examples

A good place to find examples of other writers' biographies is right here on The Write Practice. You can meet the Write Practice team on the About page . The Write Practice also includes bio examples with all guest posts (you can click on any post on this page to read the author's bio).

If you're writing a bio for your resume or a cover letter for a professional role, some of the tips here will work, but you'll want to make sure you look at examples in the field where you're applying. 

Let me share with you seven tips on how to write a bio and some personal bio examples to get you started.

Let me share with you seven tips on how to write a bio and some bio templates to get you started.

1. Write your name

Start with your name. Might seem obvious, but you want to make sure readers know who you are.

2. Share your accomplishments

Don't be shy. Say what you have done.

A list of accomplishments might include things like where you went to school and where you have been published. If relevant, you can include your professional experience or current role. This is not a time to brag or list every award you won since grade two. Pick the major accomplishments that are relevant and recent.

For example:

Mary Jones, a graduate of ____________, has been published in____________ and ______________.

If this is your first publication, you can say:

Mary Jones writes about ________________ and ______________.

3. Use third person

For author bios, write in the third person, even if you are the one writing it. First-person bios are rare and not the industry standard. 

Instead of saying, “I have lived in Tokyo and have six cats,” say, “Pamela has lived in Tokyo and has six cats.”

4. Say something personal

Well-written bios end with a personal statement about you. There's not room to tell your life story or share too many personal details, but including a personal detail or two shows readers you are a real person beyond the written page. See the ending of the following examples.

Here is Stephen King's biography from the back of his book  On Writing . It has 65 words.

Stephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. Among his most recent are 11/22/63 , Under the Dome , Lisey’s Story , Duma Key , Cell , Dreamcatcher , Hearts in Atlantis , and Bag of Bones . He was the recipient of the 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. He lives in Maine with his wife, novelist Tabitha King.

Stephen King’s biography begins with his name and then lists his professional life accomplishments. But it ends with a note about his personal life. Now you know that he lives in Maine and his wife is a novelist. This helps you to connect with him as a regular human being, not just a very accomplished celebrity.

(His biography is long, though. If you were Steven King, and they said, “Mr. King, you have only fifty words,” what would you take out?)

Or read this biography from the back of The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. This one is 42 words.

Steven Pressfield is the author of Gates of Fire, Tides of War, The Afghan Campaign, The Profession, The Warrior Ethos and Turning Pro, among others. He lives in Los Angeles. In 2003, he was made an honorary citizen of Sparta in Greece.

If I wanted to know what books Steven Pressfield wrote, I could look up his page on Amazon. But I would not know to look up whether he was made an honorary citizen of Sparta in Greece. That's an interesting relevant detail based on some of the writing he's done. 

Take a look at this one, from the back inside cover of Jon Acuff’s book Finish . This has 49 words.

Jon Acuff is the New York Times bestselling author of Start , Quitter , and Do Over , among other books. He is a popular public speaker, blogger, Tweeter, and the creator of the “30 Days of Hustle” online challenge. He lives in Nashville with his wife, Jenny, and their two daughters.

Jon Acuff's biography tells me about his accomplishments. Then it ends with a note about his family. It is a good idea to share a piece of personal information about yourself so readers can connect with you.

5. Be funny

Include humor if it fits your writing and the publication you are submitting to. Remember, you don’t want to make off-color jokes in your biography, so pretend your mother is reading it.

Unless, of course, it is for an adult magazine. Then you can write humor that fits that publication. Keep your target audience in mind, knowing that humor is highly contextual. 

6. Link to your writing

Use only one link. Decide what is the most important place you want your readers to find you. Twitter? Instagram? Your website signup list?

If you only have one link, have it go to your website signup page. An email list is the most important, as it gives you direct access to make friends with your readers. You own your website (we hope!); you don’t own Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. Social media platforms are great for connecting with readers, but it's good to keep in mind that they can change their rules any time and that can affect your access to your target audience. 

7. Follow the rules

Follow the rules. If the publication or bio instructions ask for a fifty-word biography, don’t give them 324 words. Stick to fifty. If there's a character limit, follow it. Don't jeopardize your chances of publication because you won't follow through on your author bio. 

Bonus Tip: Be Yourself

It can seem intimidating to write a killer bio. But you are a writer. You have already written an article or story so amazing that someone wants to publish it.

You can write a fantastic bio, too.

Now You Try

It's a good idea to try out a few different bios for different target audiences. Mix and match professional accomplishments and personal experiences until you have a blend that really captures you and your writing style. 

You can practice using a conversational tone and then a more formal tone. See which one fits the audience or market you have in mind. Share them with your writing friends or on your social media accounts to boost engagement and see which one your target audience likes most. 

Keep cutting extraneous details until you have a killer bio that represents you, and then polish and edit until it shines.

A biography is best written by an outsider or at least to be read that way as in POV 3rd voice. It sounds cool to use a pen name.

Hi Pamela. Your 7-step formula is typical of bio after bio after bio. As writer’s we should let the reader know they’re in for a great read. Writing a mechanical bio doesn’t give them much to go on. Here’s some food-for-thought from my 1-day bio course…

1. Don’t put your name at the start for two reasons. Firstly, bio’s are likely to be set within the context of the author anyway, so no point wasting words repeating it. Secondly, if the name should be included – perhaps because it’s to be read in isolation – it has more impact at the end; this is because a) people will remember it more after reading something interesting, and b) a great bio should create tension so the reader WANTS to know who this is.

2. Don’t waste valuable words boring the reader LISTING your accomplishments. Most authors have them, so they won’t make you stand out. And few readers would know the difference between a credible one and a valueless one. And people with truly epic accomplishments, like Stephen King, don’t need to flourish being a 50-times best-seller. By all means, roll your best one into the conversation, just don’t be mechanical.

3. Third person is good for not sounding like it’s an ego trip, but a much better way IS to be in first person and use the bio to connect with the reader. Use humour (your point 5) and open up to them, making sure your comments are directed at THEM (i.e. use ‘you’) to show you care about THEM.

4. Be personal – right! But more than that, make sure you’re saying something relevant TO the reader. Make them feel your reaching out to THEM and not the masses.

5. Yes. I’ve covered that above.

6. Yes, although don’t waste the words if you’ve already put the links on the page in other fields, which is common.

7. Definitely.

8 (added) – Tailor it for the location. Note just word count, but voice. If it’s for a funky radio show for e.g., check out the lingo and match the style.

Hope that helps unlocks a whole new way of thinking about bios and standing out from the crowd. If you get it right, the results speak for themselves.

Which three words would you use to describe yourself? Most of us have been asked this question, and many of us have fumbled through it awkwardly.

Coming up with a personal description can be daunting. But there are times when it’s essential - whether we’re updating our LinkedIn profiles, blogging for Medium or creating a business website of our own.

In this post, we’ll go over how to write a bio, step by step. To help guide you, we’ve also included a handy template, along with some professional bio examples for your inspiration. With these resources, you’ll find that writing a bio, as part of making a website , is much easier than you might think.

What is a bio?

Before you learn how to write a bio, you should have a clear understanding of what it is and why you need it.

01. Introduce yourself

Begin your bio by stating your first and last name. If you’re writing in the third person, these should be the first two words of the paragraph. 03. Explain your professional role

Next, briefly explain your current position. This is relevant whether you’re the founder of a company, a high-level specialist or a beginner in your field, and it can be similar to the description you have on your resume. Your website visitors won’t necessarily know what your job involves, so elaborating on your primary responsibilities helps paint a picture of who you are and what you have to offer. This can also be used, if needed for employment and recruitment opportunities. If you're a freelancer a strong bio can make all the difference in how successful sourcing work can be.

04. Include professional achievements

In addition to explaining what your job entails, highlight milestones that make you stand out. Even if you haven’t won an award or gained external recognition, you can discuss ways in which you’ve contributed to your professional role and touch on new ideas or approaches that you bring to the table.

Sentence 3: [Name/pronoun] has [mention your achievements].

E.g., In addition to managing the English curriculum for the school, she runs an after school program where she works one-on-one with students.

Sentence 4: [Name/pronoun] is a [mention any relevant awards, training or honors].

E.g., She has also been nominated Teacher of the Year for two consecutive years.

Sentence 5: [Name/pronoun] holds a [insert degree] in [field of study] from [university].

E.g., Lisa holds a BA in Creative Writing and a Master’s Degree in Teaching from the University of Michigan.

Once you’ve filled in this template, put it all together into a single paragraph to create an initial framework for your professional biography. Note that you can shorten or expand upon this bio according to your unique needs.

Tips for writing a bio

As you write your bio using the professional template above, make sure to keep the following tips in mind:

Keep it concise: Your bio should be sufficiently explanatory, but it should also be short and to the point. A good rule of thumb is to keep each element of your bio - from your job description to your mission statement and hobbies - to about 1-2 sentences. That way, you’ll end up with a brief paragraph that holds your readers’ attention without rambling on.

But if we really had to choose we'd say focus on - you, your professional role and company. That condenses everything that matters for bio into three sentences. Humor, creativity and uniqueness still all matter - just use fewer words to convey them.

As we’ve noted in the examples above, one of the most strategic places to put your bio is on your website - so be sure to consider it within your web design plans. Great professional bios are succinct and memorable. Here are the four specific steps to write one.

1. Begin with your name and professional title: Your professional bio should articulate who you are, your professional designation, and your responsibilities.

Answer questions like:

  • What am I known for?
  • What do I do for a living?
  • How much experience do I have?

For example, the majority of my guest post author bios begin with “I am a B2B copywriter and marketing consultant ,” or “Asavari Sharma is a marketer and writer.”

No matter who I work for, I will always stick to the writing and marketing space. That’s how I want people to know me.

2. List your professional achievements: Establishing credibility is vital to stand out from others in the industry. Depending upon the length of the bio, list a few professional achievements to earn the trust of the audience.

Ultimately, remember to focus on how your impressive feats can add value to the readers. Instead of blabbering paragraphs about how cool you are, think from the reader’s perspective and ask yourself, “What’s in it for them?”

Here’s the LinkedIn headline of Sam Browne, who first shares his mission to “help entrepreneurs grow to 10k+ followers on LinkedIn.” But that is only after he’s established credibility, stating he has 82,777 followers himself on the platform.

3. Inject some personality : Don’t hesitate to share personal information like your interests outside of work, side hustles, your hometown, the music or cuisine you like, and anything that shows people who you are.

For instance, String Nguyen uses a lot of 🍗 creatively in her LinkedIn headline. It aptly conveys her journey from being a “KFC chick” to building a multi-million dollar brand.

4. Make it memorable : What makes you unique? Taking help from your personal brand statement , try to begin your bio with a hook that highlights your passion or interests.

For instance, Ann Handley shares a lot of relevant professional details on her website’s “About” page. But beyond her glorious professional achievements, what stands out is that she’s the “world’s first Chief Content Officer.”

What to Include in a Website Bio

A bio for your professional website gives a brief of who you are, your career path, and your accomplishments. It also throws light on the mission of your website — how you intend to help your readers.

Brownie points for weaving personal stories in your bio that establish the “why” behind your professional goals, and make you relatable to the reader. If you like, you can also add a contact form below your bio, inviting readers to get in touch.

6 Tips To Write a Badass Bio

Now that you have got the steps down, here are some killer tips for writing a short bio.

1. Get to The Point

Less is more when it comes to a bio for online platforms. Stay under 100 words — that’s just about enough to give your audience a taste of your professional skills and a narrative of your career.

You don’t want to warm up the audience by sharing that you have a bachelor’s degree. Just share a relevant event or two to help your audience connect with you and your professional mission.

2. Update It Every Year

As a professional, you are going to grow, learn new skill sets, and work experience with different brands. It’s inevitable. Over time, your bio may not define your professional journey accurately.

Therefore, wherever your bio is up, make sure you review it every year or so to keep it fresh.

3. Crack a Joke or Two

Humor always leaves a lasting impression, so use it to your advantage.

Comedian Aparna Nancherla’s X handle (@aparnapkin) is a play on her name, and that is silly enough. She makes people laugh for a living. Don’t you think her Twitter bio below is proof of that?

But be cautious of how the industry you work in views humor. For instance, if you are a serious political writer, a funny bio is probably not going to bode well with your audience.

4. Use The Right Words to Brand Yourself

The words you use in your bio influence others’ perceptions about you. Therefore, you may want to steer clear of using words like ‘part-time’ or similar words that carry casual connotations.

You don’t want potential clients to view you as a low-level social media worker when you are, in reality, a CMO-for-hire focused on social media and branding strategy.

5. Accompany Your Bio With a Professional Picture

Visuals convey information about a person’s brand. If you are friendly and approachable, then upload a high-resolution smiling photo beside the text of your bio.

If you don’t have one, get a picture clicked. If you value your brand, value your bio photo.

6. End With a Call to Action (CTA)

Think of your professional bio as a marketing tool, where you can also put a request for the readers. Here are some CTAs you can consider:

1. Inviting visitors to your website: English author, John Cleese, wants his audience to know more about his app, The Silly Walk. He uses Twitter to drive traffic to the site.

1. Ryan Holiday

For his website’s About page, Ryan uses the first person to introduce himself as a media strategist and writer. He shares some of his life story, links to some of his books and lists some of his professional achievements.

Finally, he name drops some big authors (his audience may have heard about) and invites them to his email list. After the CTA, there are a bunch of quotes by entrepreneurs, authors, and other known personalities to further establish his credibility.

2. Natasha Khullar Relph

Personally, I am a big fan of Natasha. She is an award-winning journalist, author, and has worked with many popular publications.

Her bio page starts with a nice overlay of her professional background. But goes on in much more detail about her career trajectory in a timeline format. It’s real and authentic, sharing her challenges and successes without mincing words. Her photos make it even more personal!

3. Mimi Brown

A motivational keynote speaker, Mimi has a third-person narrative on her bio page that persuasively sells her skills. And makes a strong case to book herself speaking engagements.

She directly talks to her audience of leaders and shares tips to get more sales. Then establishes credibility by sharing her licenses, certifications, awards, and a bunch of media logos that she’s been featured on or associated with.

Josh has a succinct bio that he’s put on the homepage of his straightforward website. He simply highlights his mission of helping creative entrepreneurs in a sentence, before going on to share the four ways in which he can help the reader.

It’s a great example of keeping the bio focused on your audience, introducing your products and services, and avoiding complexification.

5. Wait But Why (WBW)

Popularly known as the “stick-figure-illustrated blog about almost everything,” Wait But Why is hilarious. Its “Meet The Team” page is even more so.

The author bios of the team members don’t follow any conventional rules of bio writing, but they stick to what WBW stands for — humor and satire.

Here are five short bio templates you can use as starting points to write yours.

1. Professional bio:

“[Your name] is a [professional designation], specializing in [area of expertise]. They have helped [professional achievements]. Outside of work, they are passionate about [your interests].”

2. Creative bio:

“Meet [your name], a [your profession] with a flair for [your creative focus]. They love [your passions], and their work reflects [your creative philosophy]. Join them on their journey to [your mission].”

3. Entrepreneurial bio:

“[Your name] is the founder and CEO of [your company’s name], a [brief description of your business]. They are on a mission to [your vision here]. [First name] was previously [summary of past professional experience].

4. Social Media bio:

How to Write a Badass Professional Bio for Every Platform

How to Write a Bio

To write a bio pick the right point of view, establish why you're qualified, and show, don't just tell. Don't make it all about you. The point of the bio is for the person reading it to know what's in it for them. Now it's time to tailor your bio to where it will live. Bios aren't one size fits all...

Maybe you just got a snazzy new job or a big promotion.

Or maybe you’re about boost your brand with a speaking gig or a blog contribution and your professional bio has gone the way of those tortilla chips in the back of the cabinet (a bit stale).

Either way, it’s time to chain yourself to your keyboard and write something we all dread -- a professional bio.

Writing about yourself isn’t easy. It’s a fine line between cocky and confident and you’re never quite sure when you’ve locked down the totality of your career and passions.

Full transparency: When I started at IMPACT in February, I had to write one of these monsters myself -- and to be honest, I don’t like how it came out:

“Jason is a journalist-turned-marketer passionate about how storytelling and targeted messaging create business-changing content. As an Account Executive, he is responsible for implementing inbound marketing strategies that help his clients increase brand awareness, generate leads, and acquire new customers. When he isn’t working, you’ll find Jason reading on the beach, hunting down mono vinyl, and playing guitar.”

I’m going to hit two birds with this post and provide actionable tips and advice that will help put your mind (and mine) at ease so we can write better professional bios.  

After all, this is some of the most important public-facing copy we will ever write. When done right, your bio can help expand your personal brand, build awareness for yourself and your business, or even win you new business.

Upon these words rest the fate of our entire careers.  

Okay, I’m being hyperbolic but you get it; Our bios are an important first impression and we often neglect them because it is uncomfortable to write about ourselves.    

Without further adieu, this is my guide to writing badass bios for every major platform.

General Tips

Let’s start with some quick things you should, and shouldn’t, do no matter where the bio is going to be posted.

Things you should do:

  • Pick the Right Point of View

When deciding whether to write your bio in the first (I) or third (Jason Rose) person, the general rule of thumb is to consider who is introducing you.

Meaning, when your bio appears on a company page, you are being introduced by your company so it makes sense to use the third person.

Ditto for conferences or most publications. I know it makes you feel like Kanye West, but unless it’s explicitly requested, get those “I”s out of your bio.

On the other hand, when you are writing a bio for your social media profile, it is better to the use the first person. Here you’re perceived as the “publisher,” so you’re introducing yourself.  

  • Establish why you’re qualified (but be human)

It’s a tall order, but a good bio establishes your experience and qualifications, but also that you’re a human being complete with a pulse and a personality.

If an AI application could machine-learn how to write your bio by crawling job descriptions — you’re doing something wrong.

Have a human voice and tone that is professional enough to represent you from 9 to 5, but doesn’t completely betray who you are from 7 to 10.       

Even if you’re in a field that is very conservative, use human language and avoid jargon specific to your industry.  

Things you shouldn’t do:

  • Play Buzzword Bingo

It’s easier to learn from the don'ts than the do’s — so I will fall back on my sword.  

I think my least favorite thing about my bio is the sour note I played with this first sentence.

“Jason is a journalist-turned-marketer passionate about how storytelling and targeted messaging create business-changing content.”

Journalist-turned-marketer is interesting enough and conveys my career path but everything after passionate is a buzzword or a conjunction setting up another buzzword.

That’s not to say buzzwords don’t have their place. After all, they communicate to an audience that you’re in their tribe and have a shared language, but, when we take industry jargon too far, we are just hiding behind it and safely filling space.

It’s better to speak in universal terms that resonate with your community, but could be understood by anyone.  

When possible, break away from buzzwords and you’ll stand out from the sea of sameness.  

  • Be all tell, no show   

Someone as apparently “passionate about storytelling” as I am should know to follow the most golden of all story rules.

Show, don’t tell.

According to wikipedia, this idiom is credited to Russian playwright Anton Chekhov who said "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass."

You may be working with fewer characters than Chekhov, but whenever possible don’t tell someone who you are, show them.

Fellow IMPACTer Liz Murphy’s bio is a great example of this.

“As IMPACT's content strategist, Liz does more than wrangle commas. With more than 10 years of editorial and inbound marketing experience, she's obsessed with innovating new ways of creating amazing content that's absurdly useful and effective. (She also works with in-house contributors and clients as an editor, strategist, interviewer, coach, and sometimes therapist.)”  

What a great first note.

I started my bio with a screeching violin and this is Jimmy Page’s first bend in the Stairway to Heaven guitar solo (the moment that song no longer sucks).

Instead of telling you “I’m skilled editorially but can wear many marketing hats” with her first sentence, Liz showed you: “As IMPACT's content strategist, Liz does more than wrangle commas.

Bravo, Liz.    

  • Make it all about you

How dare you make your bio all about yourself.

Like any great copy, if your bio doesn’t explicitly its intended audience value, it’s dead on arrival.  

Using Liz’s bio once again as an example, “No matter which hat she's wearing, her goal is simple -- to empower organizations and thought leaders to differentiate themselves and drive measurable results through game-changing content.

Throughout her career, Liz has worked with organizations across a wide range of industries -- from cyber security and health care, to government sales and insurance.”

If I’m a business stakeholder reading this bio, I know what’s in it for me.  

Different Copy for Different Platforms

While the tips above are best practices no matter what, bios aren’t one size fits all and each platform has specific constraints and considerations.

Let’s discuss some of the most common and important:

1. The Company/Team Page

The most important thing to keep in mind when writing a professional bio for your company’s collateral is that you want to differentiate yourself, but within the value proposition of your company and in their voice and tone.  

To put it simply, you want to stand out but not too much.  

I think we all agree that consistent messaging is a must for any brand or business, but I still sometimes come across impeccably written websites with a singular voice and tone, until I get to the author bios.

Then, suddenly the organization feels like a collection of individuals, and no matter how interesting they all personally appear to be, they don’t communicate that this business is a united entity focused on providing me the product, solution, or service I sorely need.    

2. Blogs and third-party publications

The best advice I have to offer with blog bios is to ensure that it speaks directly to the subject you are writing about.

Think Aristotle’s ethical appeals . There is no ethos in using the limited inline space of a blog about quantum physics to share that you love to snowboard.

For third-party publications, you’ll usually have to defer to the style prescribed by the editor.

My suggestion: use the bio to sneak in a link back to one of your owned web properties.

Aside from that sweet link juice, this sends users who like your article to somewhere you have complete control of messaging and how they can engage with you.  

3. LinkedIn

LinkedIn caps your bio (called a summary here) at 2,000 characters.

This gives you plenty of real estate to stretch out and write more, but just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Keep it tight and only share as much is necessary to tell your story.

Also, be cognizant of what is visible before the visitor expands the module and clicks <see more>.

If you’re buying the good stuff, chances are no one is going to click show more.

4. Facebook

Unlike LinkedIn, Facebook only gives you 101 characters to share your story.

It does, however, give you the unique option to set your bio as permanent or temporary in 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, or custom increments. These temporary bios keep the information fresh and allow you to describe not just who you are, but what is most exciting in your career right now.

For many of us, Facebook is largely a platform for our personal relationships, while professional networking activities live on LinkedIn, but if you’re building a personal brand, your Facebook page is an integral asset.

While I’ve made my feelings about my company bio clear, I actually like my Twitter Bio.

The constraints (160 characters) and the short-hand of the platform provide the opportunity to get creative. It’s also worth noting that the platform is comparatively much less stuffy than LinkedIn, so feel free to have fun with it.    

Just don’t go full 2014 with MARKETER | WRITER | LOVER OF PANDAS or mention that you like to drink coffee.  

While I haven’t taken advantage, it’s a good idea to hashtag any industry relevant keywords to boost the discoverability of your profile, and don’t forget to @ your company!

6. Instagram 

Instagram bios force you to make due with 150 characters or less.

Given the platform’s users can’t put links into posts, that is one of the most important functions of the bio.

Like Twitter, make sure you include hashtags that lead to relevant galleries, or @ links that lead to your company’s profile.  

Think of your Instagram bio almost like PPC ad copy that you are using to drive people to content. You have to be short and savvy about how you use your space.

7. Speaking Proposals and Collateral

The great thing about writing your bio for speaking engagements is that you know the specific audience it should be tailored for.

So often we struggle with our LinkedIn/Twitter/Company bios because we are trying to be all things to all people.

To knock your speaking bio out of the park, learn all you can about the audience for the specific event or conference. Who has attended in the past? What was the most popular topic?

Uncover their needs (articulated or not), and tailor your bio messaging to demonstrate why you will be the speaker that’s forcing latecomers to stand in the back.  

I hoped this post helped you shed imposter syndrome (I’m projecting) and now you can write bios for any platform that put your best foot forward.

Your author bio is, naturally, a chance for you to introduce yourself, but it’s also an opportunity for you to introduce readers to your body of work, and share a little about your writing history. If you have other titles that you’ve released previously, now’s the time to mention them.

You may also want to include any personal connections to your work, and signpost why they’re relevant. For instance:

With over a decade of writing obituaries for the local paper, Jane has a uniquely wry voice that shines through in her newest collection of essays, which explore the importance we place on legacy.

A professionally trained electrician, Jane has spent the last decade reading and writing romance novels giving her characters a palpable spark! Her latest work is the sequel to her debut novel, In the Arms of a Stranger .

Top Tip: Write in the third person

Despite the fact that an author often writes or approves their own bio, it should be written in the third person — ‘they’ rather than ‘I’. Not only is this the industry standard, it also makes it easier to toot your own horn, which you should definitely be doing here.

Example: An author’s lived experience

One great example of a bio that shares biographical details is author Niyati Tamaskar , whose memoir Unafraid draws on her own experiences of cancer and the cultural baggage surrounding it. You can learn more about Niyati and her publishing story here .

Niyati Tamaskar is a mother, engineer, entrepreneur, public speaker, and author. She speaks on issues of cultural bias, the stigma of cancer, and more. Her speaking and media appearances include her signature TEDx talk, a cover and feature spread in Columbus magazine on her journey and message of destigmatizing cancer, and a video created by Breastcancer.org on “How Niyati Tamaskar Overcame Cultural Cancer Stigma to Become an Advocate”—aimed at highlighting the minority experience while facing cancer.

An important job of an “About the Author” section is to boost your credentials, says editor Rachel: “You want to show your qualifications and credibility so that a reader will feel validated in choosing your book to read.”

That being said, it’s not a good idea to start listing every softball trophy you won in middle school. Only stick to credentials that directly relate to the content of your book. According to Rachel, “Qualifications can include writing courses, college degrees, awards, bestseller lists, and accolades or, for fiction authors, even a lifetime of interest.” Here are a few of her examples:

Jane has an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College, and was the recipient of the Vermont College creative writing award.

Jane is a historian at Vermont College and has spent over a decade researching World War 2.

Jane has traveled extensively around Eastern Europe, learning about the history of the region and walking the paths of her characters.

For non-fiction authors, your credentials are incredibly relevant as readers are far more likely to trust an authority on a subject, while fiction authors can focus more on why they write in a specific genre.

Book marketing consultant Rob Eagar suggests that another way to boost your credibility is to “to weave in any endorsements you may have received from well-known outlets… Readers pay more attention to authors with a proven track record.”

[Famous author] says Jane Doe is a unique new voice in the thriller genre.

Top tip: Keep it short

A good author bio is efficient beyond just the first line, as book launch specialist Joel Pitney suggests:

“People don't want to read long bios! Keep it under 300 words. Only include relevant materials and be as succinct as possible. If you've won a lot of awards, for example, only include the most impressive ones. Same goes if you’ve published a couple of books; only include your most successful three.”

Author bios are not a place for you to delve into a lengthy explanation of your history. However, you also don’t want your bio to be devoid of any personality. Adding a bit of color to your bio helps readers imagine who you are. Plus, if they can relate to you, it might be an extra push for them to buy your book. 

That’s why Joel Pitney suggests: “If there's room, and it's relevant, you can add some color, like where you live or something interesting that might not obviously relate to your writing career, but that makes you a more interesting person.”

This can be done subtly, like by referring to your location in your byline: 

“New-York based psychologist, Jane Doe…”

Or you can include a brief illustration of your lifestyle, says Rachel: “Jane lives and works out of her home at the base of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, and spends her summers hiking and camping with her two children and husband.”

Finally, marketing consultant Rob suggests closing out with a quippy-one liner that illustrates what kind of writer you are. “If your writing is known for its humor, let it show in your bio.” For example:

Jane hopes to write her next novel soon, if she can stop reading other people's novels instead.

By only using your name and pronouns to speak about yourself here, you are letting your title and skill set speak for themselves.

If you’re anything like me, you probably don't think about your professional bio until you’re suddenly asked to "send one over via email."

You have approximately one afternoon to come up with it, so you scramble together a bio that ends up reading like this:

"Rodney Erickson is a content marketing professional at HubSpot, a CRM platform that helps companies attract visitors, convert leads, and close customers.

Previously, Rodney worked as a marketing manager for a tech software startup. He graduated with honors from Columbia University with a dual degree in Business Administration and Creative Writing."

To be fair, in certain contexts, your professional bio needs to be more formal, like Mr. Erickson's up there. But there are also cases where writing a personable and conversational bio is good.

Whether you choose the formal or casual route, use the following steps to create a perfect bio.

1. Create an 'About' page for your website or profile.

You need an online space to keep your professional bio. Here are a few to consider (some of these you might already have in place):

  • Facebook Business page .
  • Industry blog byline .
  • Instagram account .
  • Personal website .
  • LinkedIn profile .
  • Industry website .
  • Personal blog .

As you'll see in the professional bio examples below, the length and tone of your bio will differ depending on the platforms you use.

Instagram, for example, allows only 150 characters of bio space, whereas you can write as much as you want on your website or Facebook Business page.

2. Begin writing your bio with your first and last name.

If your readers remember nothing else about your bio, they should remember your name. For that reason, it's a good idea for your first and last name to be the first two words of your professional bio.

Even if your name is printed above this bio (hint: it should), this is a rare moment where it's okay to be redundant.

For example, if I were writing my bio, I might start it like this:

Lindsay Kolowich is a Senior Marketing Manager at HubSpot.

3. Mention any associated brand name you might use.

Will your professional bio represent you or a business you work for? Ensure you mention the brand you associate with in your bio. If you're a freelancer, you may have a personal business name or pseudonym you advertise to your clients.

Here are a few examples:

  • Lindsay Kolowich Marketing.
  • SEO Lindsay.
  • Kolowich Consulting.
  • Content by Kolowich (what do you think ... too cheesy?).

Maybe you founded your own company and want its name to be separate from your real name. Keep it simple like this: "Lindsay Kolowich is the founder and CEO of Kolowich Consulting."

4. State your current position and what you do.

Whether you're the author of a novel or a mid-level specialist, use the next few lines of your bio to describe what you do in that position. Don't assume your audience knows what your job title entails.

Make your primary responsibilities known so readers can know you and understand what you offer to your industry.

5. Include at least one professional accomplishment.

Just as a business touts its client successes in the form of case studies, your professional bio should let your audience know what you've achieved.

What have you done for yourself — as well as for others — that makes you a valuable player in your industry?

6. Describe your values and how they inform your career.

Why do you do what you do? What might make your contribution to the market different from your colleagues? What are the values that make your business a worthwhile investment to others?

Create a professional bio that answers these questions.

7. Briefly tell your readers who you are outside of work.

Transition from describing your values in work to describing who you are outside of work. This may include:

  • Your family.
  • Your hometown.
  • Sports you play.
  • Hobbies and interests.
  • Favorite music and travel destinations.
  • Side hustles you're working on.

People like connecting with other people. The more transparent you are about who you are personally, the more likable you'll be to people reading about you.

8. Use humor or a personal story to add flavor to your professional bio.

End your professional bio on a good note — or, more specifically, a funny note. By leaving your audience with something quirky or unique, you can ensure they'll leave your website with a pleasant impression of you.

It's important to follow the steps above when writing your bio, but don't obsess over any one section. People consume lots of information daily. So ensure your bio hooks 'em in the first line, and you won’t lose them.

The answer: A lot. Though there's no way to tell who is reading it, you want it to be catchy. Done right, your professional bio will delight the right people who come across it on multiple platforms.

For instance, consider his tagline, under "About" — " Quiet during the day. QUITE LOUD at night! " DJ Nexus tells you when he works awesomely. I got goosebumps just imagining a dance club in which he might play his music.

This is a terrific lesson for professional bios: Customers want to learn about you. Consider how you might also lead your visitors off your Facebook page and onto your website to learn more about who you are.

No matter where it lives, your professional bio does not differ from any other persuasive copy. One common mistake people make is thinking of it as its own beast, separate from other pieces of writing.

If you think about it that way, you’d likely write a painfully uninteresting bio.

When you sit to write your professional bio, don’t watch that cursor blinking on the screen. Instead, think about how you would introduce a blog post. You don't dive right into the meat of the thing, do you? No. You start with an introduction.

The best bios are often concise (around 200–300 words), so you don't have a lot of room to play around.

But a single sentence that sets the stage for your reader and provides a context for your accomplishments could make the rest of your bio more persuasive.

Take Lena Axelsson's bio, for instance. She's a marriage and family therapist — a job where empathy and compassion are a big part of the job description.

That's why she opens her bio with a great introductory sentence: "When human beings experience trauma or severe life stressors, it is not uncommon for their lives to unravel."

Then, she goes into why she's passionate about her job, how she helps her clients, and how she caters her approach to each patient. The necessary educational information is left for the end after the reader has been hooked.

Your bio doesn't have to be super serious, nor does it have to start with a joke. This bio shows how you can capture your reader's attention by being empathetic and showing how that empathy shapes a valuable professional.

  • The tone of the bio is professional and informative, rather than overly personal or casual.

5. Mark Levy : Branding Firm Founder

Mark Levy is a small business owner. While the professional bio on his website takes a traditional approach, it still speaks to Mark’s audience.

What we love about his bio is the way he's set it up: On his business' "About" page, he's listed two biographies, which he's labeled "Mark Levy's Biography #1" and "Mark Levy's Biography #2."

The first biography is a "short version," which includes a combination of bullet points listing his credentials and a few brief paragraphs.

The second is the "long version," which is even more interesting than the first. Why? It reads like a story — a compelling one, at that. In fact, it gets hilarious in some parts.

The second sentence of the bio reads: "He was frightened of public school, loved playing baseball and football, ran home to watch ape films on the 4:30 Movie, listened to The Jam and The Buzzcocks, and read magic trick books."

She emphasizes the "why" behind her work in the first half of her bio before transitioning to the way she carries out that work in practice.

The second half of her bio combines her body of work and the awards she’s won. This subtle timeline gives readers a picture of her experience in political anthropology without listing her resume in detail.

  • Audra’s bio shows how experts can succinctly discuss their years of experience in a few words.

  • It shows Audra’s interests, giving readers a sense of what she likes as a professional.

7. Marie Mikhail : Professional Recruiter

Marie Mikhail checks nearly every box that makes an excellent bio.

A professional recruiter, she expresses her "passion for recruiting" in the first sentence, while using that sentence to hook her profile visitors into a brief story of her background.

But there are a lot of recruiters out there, and Marie knows that.

So, to differentiate herself, she closes the first paragraph of her bio by explaining that she likes "getting people excited about the things [she's] excited about."

It's a well-put value proposition that sets her apart from the rest of the HR industry.

Marie concludes her bio with a smooth mix of professional skills, like her Spanish fluency, and personal interests, such as podcasting and Star Wars (she mentions the latter with just the right amount of humor).

  • Straight off the bat, Marie uses a story to share her experiences of how she began as a recruiter.
  • It provides a subtle pitch for readers to check out her podcast.
  • The bio exudes Maries approachable, fun, and playful personality.

8. Wonbo Woo : Executive Producer

Wonbo Woo is the executive producer of WIRED's video content and has several impressive credits to his name. What does this mean for his professional bio? He has to prioritize.

Not only does Wonbo's bio start strong, but he also takes readers on a suspenseful journey through some of his most harrowing assignments — where he was when news broke and how he responded. You can see this quality below.

The accomplished journalist concludes his gripping bio as strong as it began. He mentions his experience with the states and countries he's visited in his career. Overall, it's a fantastically concise bio for as much detail as it holds.

  • The first sentence of the bio leads with authority and instantly gets the reader’s attention.
  • The bio dives into the many exceptional projects Wonbo Woo has executed.
  • Wonbo Woo uses lots of specificity to pass points across, like WIRED's YouTube channel nearly quadrupled subscribers (+375%) and views (+391%), publishing over 100 videos annually with over a million views each.

9. Chris Burkard : Freelance Photographer

When writing your bio, you don't want to boast while showcasing your accomplishments. Chris Burkard's LinkedIn bio does this well.

Written in third-person, his bio tells a fluid story, starting with his ultimate mission — "capture stories that inspire humans to consider their relationship with nature" — before diving into more tangible accolades (giving a TED Talk, publishing books, etc.).

Best of all, rather than using his bio as an opportunity to brag, he instead ties his talents into how he hopes to help others , writing, "Through social media, Chris strives to share his vision … and inspire [his followers] to explore for themselves."

I wouldn't necessarily be inclined to follow Chris if his bio had simply read, "I post beautiful images." But images that inspire me to travel? Now that's something I can get behind.

Last, he ends on a humble, sweet note: "He is happiest with his wife Breanne raising their two sons." So inject personal information into your bio — it makes you seem approachable.

  • Lisa gets creative by mentioning the brands she’s worked with and highlighting some of her favorite projects.

11. Nancy Twine : Hair Care Founder

As Founder and CEO of Briogeo — a popular natural hair care line that's received rave reviews in publications such as Allure and InStyle — there are undoubtedly plenty of accolades Twine could boast about.

But she starts her bio from a humbler place, stating: "Nancy Twine is no newcomer to the beauty-sphere — in fact, she made her first foray into the world of natural product formulation at the ripe age of five."

The language used throughout Mouzon's bio is authentic, real, and honest.

For instance, in the second paragraph, she admits:

When writing a short bio, it can be tempting to pack in as much relevant information about yourself as possible — but this isn’t the most effective approach.

What I love most about Corey's bio is that it's a great example of how to deliver information about yourself without taking things too seriously. And in this context, that's totally appropriate.

Despite having several impressive accomplishments under her belt, she simply doesn't enjoy displaying them publicly. She prefers making her author bio a little "light."

Her bio reads, "Corey is a Bruce Springsteen fan who does content marketing, in that order."

It works in this context because, at HubSpot, our blog authors prefer to make themselves friendly and approachable — while letting their content speak for itself.

It helps that authors' social media accounts are located right below our names and above our pictures. This lets folks click the LinkedIn button and go to the author's LinkedIn page.

3. Precious Oboidhe : Content Strategist and Writer

I don’t check out an author's byline unless the post is interesting. My guess is you do the same. And most times, you do this because you may be interested in working with the writer.

This is where a short bio that speaks to your needs comes in. An example? An example? Precious' bio that shows off his skills as a freelance content strategist and writer.

  • It states that Precious is for hire, causing interested prospects to contact him.
  • It includes his website, where prospects can learn more about him.
  • People can connect with Precious on social media to learn more about his work.

4. Rebecca Bollwitt : Writer

Bio platform: instagram.

Instagram is a notoriously difficult platform on which to write a good bio. Similar to Twitter, you don't have room for a professional bio that includes everything about you.

And because Instagram is primarily a mobile app, many viewers read about you passively on their mobile devices.

Instagram's limited bio space requires you to highlight just your most important qualities. Blogging icon Rebecca Bollwitt does just this in her own Instagram bio excellently.

Rebecca's brand name is Miss604, and she cleverly uses emojis in her Instagram bio to tell visitors what makes her a valuable content creator. See the screenshot below:

The rest of her bio follows suit, breaking up the text with an appropriate emoji and a perfect collection of nouns to tell me who she is as a person.

She even links out to her husband's Instagram account after the heart emoji (an adorable addition) and assures her followers that all of her pictures are authentically hers.

Take a lesson from Miss604 and show your personal side. Branding yourself as a professional shouldn’t involve discarding many things that make you human . Often, your most personal attributes make for the best professional bio content.

  • Rebecca highlights her most important qualities in a few words.

5. Megan Gilmore : Cookbook Author

Bio platform: instagram.

Megan Gilmore is a best-selling cookbook author. She often posts healthy recipes on her Instagram page and inspires her followers to learn not to sacrifice taste for the sake of health.

You can glean most of this information immediately from her Instagram bio, which is short and to the point: "Gluten-free recipes and meal plans."

Gilmore further includes a CTA link within her Instagram bio that leads followers to free, ready-to-use recipes. You might think, " Why would she do that since it discourages people from buying her book?"

But that couldn't be further from the truth.

By giving her followers the chance to try out her recipes, she's slowly turning leads into customers. After I tried a few of her Instagram recipes and loved them, I bought her book, knowing I'd like more of what she offered.

  • The CTA link includes an invitation for people to join her newsletter. Meaning, she can build her email list.

6. Bea Dixon : Feminine Care Founder

Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human — not just a businesswoman.

For instance, while she highlights her girl boss attitude with a tiara emoji, she equally calls attention to her fashion interests (Free People), her pets, Boss and Sadie, and her love for ramen noodles.

How to Resist the Temptation of AI When Writing

Whether you're a student, a journalist, or a business professional, knowing how to do high-quality research and writing using trustworthy data and sources, without giving in to the temptation of AI or ChatGPT , is a skill worth developing.

As I detail in my book Writing That Gets Noticed , locating credible databases and sources and accurately vetting information can be the difference between turning a story around quickly or getting stuck with outdated information.

For example, several years ago the editor of Parents.com asked for a hot-take reaction to country singer Carrie Underwood saying that, because she was 35, she had missed her chance at having another baby. Since I had written about getting pregnant in my forties, I knew that as long as I updated my facts and figures, and included supportive and relevant peer-reviewed research, I could pull off this story. And I did.

The story ran later that day , and it led to other assignments. Here are some tips I’ve learned that you should consider mastering before you turn to automated tools like generative AI to handle your writing work for you.

Identify experts, peer-reviewed research study authors, and sources who can speak with authority—and ideally, offer easily understood sound bites or statistics on the topic of your work. Great sources include professors at major universities and media spokespeople at associations and organizations.

For example, writer and author William Dameron pinned his recent essay in HuffPost Personal around a statistic from the American Heart Association on how LGBTQ people experience higher rates of heart disease based on discrimination. Although he first found the link in a secondary source (an article in The New York Times ), he made sure that he checked the primary source: the original study that the American Heart Association gleaned the statistic from. He verified the information, as should any writer, because anytime a statistic is cited in a secondary source, errors can be introduced.

Jen Malia, author of  The Infinity Rainbow Club  series of children’s books (whom I recently interviewed on my podcast ), recently wrote a piece about dinosaur-bone hunting for Business Insider , which she covers in her book Violet and the Jurassic Land Exhibit.

After a visit to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Malia, whose books are set in Philadelphia, found multiple resources online and on the museum site that gave her the history of the Bone Wars , information on the exhibits she saw, and the scientific names of the dinosaurs she was inspired by. She also used the Library of Congress’ website, which offers digital collections and links to the Library of Congress Newspaper Collection.

Malia is a fan of searching for additional resources and citable documents with Google Scholar . “If I find that a secondary source mentions a newspaper article, I’m going to go to the original newspaper article, instead of just stopping there and quoting,” she says.

Your local public library is a great source of free information, journals, and databases (even ones that generally require a subscription and include embargoed research). For example, your search should include everything from health databases ( Sage Journals , Scopus , PubMed) to databases for academic sources and journalism ( American Periodical Series Online , Statista , Academic Search Premier ) and databases for news, trends, market research, and polls (t he Harris Poll , Pew Research Center , Newsbank , ProPublica ).

Even if you find a study or paper that you can’t access in one of those databases, consider reaching out to the study’s lead author or researcher. In many cases, they’re happy to discuss their work and may even share the study with you directly and offer to talk about their research.

For journalist Paulette Perhach’s article on ADHD in The New York Times, she used Epic Research to see “dual team studies.” That's when two independent teams address the same topic or question, and ideally come to the same conclusions. She recommends locating research and experts via key associations for your topic. She also likes searching via Google Scholar but advises filtering it for studies and research in recent years to avoid using old data. She suggests keeping your links and research organized. “Always be ready to be peer-reviewed yourself,” Perhach says.

When you are looking for information for a story or project, you might be inclined to start with a regular Google search. But keep in mind that the internet is full of false information, and websites that look trustworthy can sometimes turn out to be businesses or companies with a vested interest in you taking their word as objective fact without additional scrutiny. Regardless of your writing project, unreliable or biased sources are a great way to torpedo your work—and any hope of future work.

Author Bobbi Rebell researched her book Launching Financial Grownups using the IRS’ website . “I might say that you can contribute a certain amount to a 401K, but it might be outdated because those numbers are always changing, and it’s important to be accurate,” she says. “AI and ChatGPT can be great for idea generation,” says Rebell, “but you have to be careful. If you are using an article someone was quoted in, you don’t know if they were misquoted or quoted out of context.”

If you use AI and ChatGPT for sourcing, you not only risk introducing errors, you risk introducing plagiarism—there is a reason OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is being sued for downloading information from all those books.

Audrey Clare Farley, who writes historical nonfiction, has used a plethora of sites for historical research, including Women Also Know History , which allows searches by expertise or area of study, and JSTOR , a digital library database that offers a number of free downloads a month. She also uses Chronicling America , a project from the Library of Congress which gathers old newspapers to show how a historical event was reported, and Newspapers.com (which you can access via free trial but requires a subscription after seven days).

When it comes to finding experts, Farley cautions against choosing the loudest voices on social media platforms. “They might not necessarily be the most authoritative. I vet them by checking if they have a history of publication on the topic, and/or educational credentials.”

When vetting an expert, look for these red flags:

  • You can’t find their work published or cited anywhere.
  • They were published in an obscure journal.
  • Their research is funded by a company, not a university, or they are the spokesperson for the company they are doing research for. (This makes them a public relations vehicle and not an appropriate source for journalism.)

And finally, the best endings for virtually any writing, whether it’s an essay, a research paper, an academic report, or a piece of investigative journalism, circle back to the beginning of the piece, and show your reader the transformation or the journey the piece has presented in perspective.

As always, your goal should be strong writing supported by research that makes an impact without cutting corners. Only then can you explore tools that might make the job a little easier, for instance by generating subheads or discovering a concept you might be missing—because then you'll have the experience and skills to see whether it's harming or helping your work.

The 2023-2024 UNMC College of Nursing Creative Writing Awards announced winners for this year’s contest. The theme was “Nursing Does That,” encouraging students and alumni to write a story about an experience of how they were changed by caring for an individual who was different than themselves. 

This was the first year offering a contest for alumni, who could submit a story on the same theme.

“We received stories from all our five campuses and from all our academic programs,” said Mark Darby, assistant professor in the UNMC College of Nursing and contest chair. “Our alumni were very supportive, providing not only great stories but funds for our awards this year.”

Darby added, “The stories reflect the deep respect and care our students and alumni provide to the citizens of Nebraska. Nurses face difficult clinical situation and still provide high levels of care.”

This is the fourth year for the contest, which has provided more than $53,000 in awards and resulted in four student stories being published in the American Journal of Nursing.

The top award winners of the student contest will share their stories at a virtual banquet, available at this link , on April 25 from 5-6:30 p.m.

In June 2021, Cam got a call from her publisher who told her that a different songwriter couldn’t make a session and asked if she could go instead. Details were scarce — she didn’t even know whose session it was — and off she went to the studio on a whim. Little did she know she’d be walking into sessions for Beyoncé’s new chart-topping album, “Cowboy Carter,” which inevitably would feature writing, production, engineering and background singing from Cam on five of its songs.

Since debuting in 2010, the 39-year-old has etched a name for herself as an artist and songwriter, releasing a pop album in 2010 before a heel-turn to country with 2015’s “Untamed.” That record spawned her highest-charting hit to date, the confessional “Burning House,” which landed her a Grammy nomination. But she hit a different stride with 2020’s “The Otherside,” working with longtime collaborator Tyler Johnson and Jack Antonoff for a collection of songs that conveyed a deeper sophistication in her writing and performance.

Cam recalls that she worked on the album for the latter half of 2021, encouraged to share her ideas to be threaded into the bigger picture. “I could show up with these pieces that were purely myself,” she says. For instance, she channeled her love of requiems, which she sang in choir as a kid, for some of her contributions. “There’s no way you could even guess where she’s going. That’s one of my favorite things about Beyoncé and about this album, is that even though there are so many ties to the past and you hear everything woven through, it’s so forward-facing. She’s singing to us about the future and where we’re going, and I want to go there. So I think spiritually, I definitely felt aligned once I heard it all together. I couldn’t even realize that that’s where this was going back then. I was just contributing these pieces and building blocks that came from me that obviously were on the same journey.”

Right as “Cowboy Carter” released, Beyoncé revealed that she initially intended to put it out before 2022’s “Renaissance,” the first of a planned trilogy that centered on house and dance music. Cam states that she was surprised when “Renaissance” dropped instead, unsure of when the music she worked on would see the light of day.

“I was like, no!” she says with a laugh. “But I absolutely love ‘Renaissance’ so it was a no with a smile and a dance at the same time. The difference between me as an artist and writing for myself and getting to control the timeline and how it all goes and then deciding you’re going to collaborate and be in service as a writer, it’s a whole different ride. I’d like to say I have more understanding and patience for it, because I know how hard it is on the other side of things when you’re trying to direct the flow of traffic, but I definitely was like, this album is so important… So yeah, it was a big sigh of relief when it was finally released.”

She beams as she talks about “Cowboy Carter,” and recalls listening to “Protector” as a finished product for the first time. Cam is mother to her five-year-old daughter Lucy, and identified with the nurturing message of the song. “I just remember I was flying on a plane with [Lucy] and she was probably two and I was so overwhelmed,” she says. “I just remember thinking, all our parents have done this for us. They did it for us and now I’m doing it for her, and I just bawled my eyes out when I first heard that.”

Memory integrity is a virtualization-based security feature that safeguards your computer against malware that tries to exploit the Windows kernel. You can turn it on or off in the Core isolation section of the Windows Security app. Open the Windows Security app, click the "Device Security" tab on the left, and scroll to Core Isolation.

Sometimes, the memory integrity toggle may appear grayed out with a message stating, "Memory integrity is off. Your device may be vulnerable."

This issue is often linked to your drivers. If your drivers become corrupted due to reasons such as improper system shutdowns or BSOD , you'll likely encounter this problem.

Another situation where you might encounter this issue is when you connect a new device to your computer. If you see this message in such cases, it suggests that your computer may not be compatible with the driver of the newly connected device.

In addition to all those scenarios, it could simply be an interface problem. This means the feature is functioning correctly in the background, but you're seeing the message due to an interface bug in Windows 11.

Now that you understand what usually causes the Memory integrity error on Windows 11, let's check out some of the solutions to fix the problem.

In the Core isolation window, where you'll see the Memory integrity is off message, there will be a "Review Incompatible Drivers" option below the message. When you click this option, you'll see the incompatible driver that is causing the issue.

You'll see information about the incompatible driver, such as its product name, driver version, and published name.

If clicking on the driver's name does not provide all these details, you can execute a DISM command to retrieve them. To run the DISM command, open the Start menu, type Command Prompt in the search bar, and select "Run as Administrator."

In the elevated Command Prompt window, input the following command and press Enter:

This command will list all the drivers installed on your computer along with other information. You'll have to find the incompatible driver that was flagged in Windows Security under the Published Name column.

Once you've located it, make a note of its provider name. After that, you'll have to update the incompatible driver. This is because the issue likely occurs due to a corrupted or outdated driver; in either situation, updating the driver should fix the issue.

To update the driver, open the Device Manager , click "View," and select "Devices by Driver."

Locate the incompatible driver, double-click on it, then right-click the relevant device and choose "Update Driver."

Choose "Search Automatically for Drivers." Then, Windows will try to find and download the latest driver for that device. If Windows is unable to find the update, you can visit the device manufacturer's website to download the latest driver update.

For instance, if the issue relates to your keyboard driver, then visit your keyboard manufacturer's website and download the most recent driver update for your keyboard. The update will be in .exe format, so you can install it like any other Windows application. After updating the driver, restart your computer and check if you're still getting a memory integrity error.

If updating the incompatible driver was unable to fix the problem, you should consider deleting it completely. Don't worry, deleting the driver will not have any adverse effects, as Windows will automatically reinstall the driver once you use the related device again. However, this time Windows will install the newest working driver for that device.

To delete the incompatible driver, open Command Prompt as an administrator and execute the following command to view the list of installed drivers.

Type the command below and press Enter. Make sure to replace <Published name> with the published name of the incompatible driver.

For example, if the published name of the incompatible driver is oem58.inf, then the command will be:

Once the command is executed, you'll see the "Driver Package Uninstalled" message. After that, restart your computer and then check if you're still facing the problem.

The issue can also occur due to a bug in the Windows version you are currently using. A bug in the Windows Security app could also be the reason behind the problem.

Either way, you should check for and download any available Windows updates . Downloading Windows updates will not only update the Windows version but may also include updates for the Windows Security app that could resolve the issue.

Once you have downloaded the available updates for your Windows PC, open the Windows Security app and check if the "Memory integrity is off" message still appears.

Your computer has numerous processes and services running in the background that help the operating system run smoothly. Sometimes, these processes or services may interfere with other programs, which may lead to various issues, including the one at hand.

You can identify that problematic agent by performing a clean boot . Once you have identified the problematic service or process, you can either delete it or download any available driver updates for it.

If none of the above solutions were helpful, the last step you can take is to use the Registry Editor to forcibly enable the memory integrity feature. However, you must be very careful when applying this fix, as a single incorrect edit in the registry can make your system unstable.

To be on the safe side, you must back up the registry and create a restore point . This way, you can easily restore your computer to a working state in case any issues arise during the registry editing process.

Once you have taken these essential safety measures, let's begin. First, open the Start menu, type Registry Editor in the search bar, and press Enter.

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following location:

Double-click the "Enabled" key, type 1 in the Value data field, and click "OK."

Restart your computer, and you will find that you can activate the memory integrity toggle without any problems.

AI Can Write the Lyrics, But Who Owns the Music Is Up for Debate

Nashville-based country musician Anna Vaus and her brother were curious about the quality of AI songwriting, so they asked a generative AI chatbot to write a country tune, offering the bot nothing more than a title: “River of Love.”

The chatbot generated a verse about the ebb and flow of a romantic relationship replete with imagery of water. The opening line: “I’ve been a river looking for ocean arms.”

Vaus and her brother composed chords, added rhythm, and recorded the song verbatim. The resulting song includes a combination of AI-generated lyrics and human-made musical expression.

Who owns the copyrights? The US Copyright Office is tasked with finding the answer.

The agency says lyrics like ‘River of Love’ can’t receive copyright protection under existing law. The agency, part of the Library of Congress, issued guidance in March 2023 stating that any AI-generated content alone is not copyrightable—only human creativity can receive protection.

Vaus’s experiment from 2020 underscores complex legal questions for musicians and artists as they weigh the advantages and pitfalls of using rapidly advancing AI tools in the creative process. AI could unlock enormous creative potential for artists who may find imaginative uses of AI or use bots to support their own art. For now, uncertainty remains over protections afforded to artists using the new technology.

The lines of copyright demarcation between pure, human art and bot-influenced art are being drawn in federal offices and courts. The Copyright Office, which once had to contend with the novelty of copyrighting photographs and then later computer programs, will release a series of studies on copyright law’s intersection with AI. Among them will be a paper, expected this summer, focused on the copyrightability of AI-generated works.

In the meantime, one federal court has already agreed with the Office’s view that a work created exclusively with AI isn’t protected, but many more close cases are in the pipeline.

“Artists and creators who are interested in using AI generators will potentially use them but not register their works, waiting, hopefully, for a change in the legal position,” said Edward Lee, an intellectual property law professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law. “But some might shy away from even using AI at all.”

Vaus said she agrees that a song created exclusively with AI shouldn’t receive the same copyright protections afforded to humans, and the siblings never sought to own the lyrics. But she said there is “absolutely a skill” in figuring out how to create art with AI.

Vaus said she and other songwriters have wielded AI in creative ways, experimenting with chatbots to help write specific lines for a song or come up with rhymes. Vaus wasn’t that impressed with AI-generated “River of Love” lyrics, but said they could offer a foundation to write her own song.

“It certainly generated some new perspectives,” Vaus said. “It brought up some language that maybe I wouldn’t go to when writing.”

‘Rigid View’

The Copyright Office’s guidance is merely a year old and still evolving. The current policy framework, released in March 2023, fails to account for nuanced uses of AI, and until regulators or the courts provide additional clarity, many artists may be in legal limbo, Lee said.

Copyright Office Director Shira Perlmutter defended the office’s guidance and its recent rejections of registrations for AI-assisted works at an AI and music law conference last week. They include an award-winning piece created with the AI tool Midjourney and a human-made photograph reanimated with AI in the style of Vincent van Gogh.

The guidance asks applicants to disclose and disclaim any elements of their copyrighted work that were created with AI. Requiring the disclaimer “was not to make applicants’ lives more difficult, or to require lawyers to be consulted,” but to “avoid any later questioning of the validity of the registration,” Perlmutter said on April 4.

Lee, who authored a law review article criticizing the office’s AI guidance, said it failed to undergo the proper procedural steps before issuance. The office should have held a public comment period because the guidance include “new substantive rules” about the copyrightability of an entirely new class of AI-generated works, Lee said.

The office said in a statement to Bloomberg Law that its guidance “clarified existing practice” and “was issued in a manner consistent with other policy statements and interpretive rules that the Office has published.”

The office did open a formal public comment period later in summer 2023 for its study on AI, and it will provide updated guidance on registering AI generated works, subject to the notice-and-comment process.

But as a legal matter, Lee argued the office’s approach provides an overly rigid view of authorship. He agreed that an AI work based on one or two word prompts can’t receive copyright protection. But an AI user can express creativity through sufficiently complex prompt engineering and the “selection and arrangement” of AI elements of a work, he said.

In one closely watched case, the office in 2023 granted partial registration for an AI-generated comic book “Zarya of the Dawn,” but only for the human-made text and panels. The artist Kris Kashtanova had to disclaim the comic book images, which were created with Midjourney.

Lee argued Kashtanova’s AI-images should be registered as well, since the artist exercised control over the images with creative prompting and iterations. But the office reasoned that AI text-to-image models include some randomness, so an AI model given the same set of prompts might reproduce completely different images.

“The Copyright Office and the Supreme Court have rejected the ‘sweat of the brow’ doctrine, which is that just because you worked hard at something doesn’t make it copyrightable,” said Stuart Levi, an intellectual property attorney at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP.

Although the Copyright Office’s rejections of applicants using AI receive far more public attention, it has still granted registrations for AI-assisted works, said Perlmutter. Those include about 200 registrations of the 1,000 applications the office has received that disclose the use of AI, Perlmutter said.

Navigating Uncertainty

The agency’s evolving regulatory posture poses a number of practical problems for creative industries.

The Copyright Office last year sent a letter to the Mechanical Licensing Collective, a nonprofit tasked by the federal government with distributing royalties to songwriters and composers, guiding it to withhold certain royalty payments.

Specifically, copyright owners of musical works shouldn’t receive royalties if “circumstances reasonably indicate” the music lacks sufficient human authorship pending an investigation by the MLC, the agency said.

Amazon.com Inc . will have to navigate similar legal waters as it faces an inundation of AI-generated self-published books, Levi said.

“Everybody is going to have to deal with this dramatic increase in the amount of content generated,” he said. “And there’s going to be a lot of touch points where we will care if it is human generated or not.”

Singer-songwriter Shane Stevens warned the use of AI in the writer’s room without guardrails could cause chaos for authorship credit and royalty distribution.

“Until we really know how they’re tracking the AI that they’re using, it can become a copyright issue for a songwriter in particular,” Stevens said at the AI and music law conference held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. “We need to get ahead of it in the room now.”

The Motion Picture Association, which represents major film studios and Netflix Inc. , argued in a comment to the Copyright Office in 2023 that its rigid copyrightability guidance could be used by infringers who want to rip off AI-generated material that reflects human creativity.

Potential infringers could “cause mischief by challenging the validity of registrations” for works that were touched by AI, the comment said. The association pointed to a copyright infringement case involving video games on the brink of trial that was paused while the Copyright Office sorted out a new registration questions in the case.

Given those uncertainties, providing artists with blanket advice about their ownership of art which used AI remains complicated, said Farrah Usmani, a music and entertainment attorney at Nixon Peabody LLP in Nashville. But musicians shouldn’t stop using AI tools, as long as they have the proper legal conversation before they put it on the marketplace, she said.

“Let’s try to deconstruct what it is that went into the song, whether its AI or whether its samples,” Usmani said. “It doesn’t necessarily change how we advise our clients.”

Until then, the Copyright Office will continue to debate the essence of its AI dilemma.

“When does the AI become a tool that reflects the human’s creativity, rather than being the source of the expressive elements itself?” Perlmutter said.
