What an MFA Degree Is and What You Need to Know

An MFA helps artists gain confidence and mastery in an art form, whether it is painting or dancing.

What You Should Know About MFA Degrees

Students pursuing an MFA need to be ready and willing to learn from criticism.

Despite the intense competitiveness of artistic fields and the fact that these disciplines are unlikely to make someone rich unless he or she experiences extraordinary success, these fields continue to attract legions of men and women. The allure of fine arts careers, which allow for a high degree of autonomy and self-expression and offer the constant challenge to produce original and influential work, entices many people. Artists who are determined to become experts on their art form may be interested in a Master of Fine Arts degree , commonly known as an MFA.

What is an MFA degree?

An MFA degree signifies that a professional artist has completed a series of rigorous courses in his or her art form and signals that someone is adept at his or her chosen craft, whether it is a technologically intensive field like graphic design or film editing, or a technology-free art form like drawing. An MFA is a graduate-level credential, meaning that before you get an MFA, you typically need a college degree.

MFA degree recipients say their graduate school education allowed them to refine their artistic philosophy and creative techniques while elevating the quality of their art to make it more unique, polished and interesting. In addition, MFA degree holders say having an MFA has given them the credentials necessary to teach courses in their art form at colleges and universities, and that it gives them sufficient knowledge of their art discipline to offer thoughtful critiques.

Frank J. Stockton, a visual artist who earned an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of California—Los Angeles , says his primary motivation for pursuing an MFA was that he loved painting and wanted to do as much of it as humanly possible. "Also, I just wanted to be the best artist that I could be," he says.

Anthony Borchardt, an assistant professor and gallery director at Fontbonne University in St. Louis, says prospective MFA students should understand that an MFA degree is unlikely to result in an extremely lucrative job.

One is as likely to become wealthy from art as he or she would be to become wealthy from athletics, Borchardt wrote in an email. "It's a rare opportunity, and it takes commitment, sacrifice and patience. Besides being a full-time working studio artist, students can try to get into the teaching field post-graduation. An MFA is not a guaranteed job. As I tell my students, once they get the degree, that's when the hard work actually starts. The payoff is the opportunity to do what few people are able to do. Make art and do what you love. To find success in this field, you need to have a burning desire from within and be committed morning, noon and night."

However, Marta Bistram, a communications professional with an MFA in creative writing from Chapman University in California, says the creativity you cultivate in an MFA program can be applied in multiple career paths. "I pursued a career in communications after defending a creative thesis of original poetry, which some might consider an unusual avenue," she wrote in an email. "I firmly believe that the way an artistic graduate program encourages you to think is applicable to any career path a graduate chooses, whether or not it directly correlates to their discipline. I continue to work on my poetry outside my 9 to 5, but I find extreme satisfaction from both my career and my artistic pursuits."

Experts say that though there are some extremely wealthy people with MFA degrees who achieved fame and fortune as a result of their art, the vast majority of MFA degree holders earn modest salaries. According to PayScale, a compensation data company that publishes the going rates for various types of jobs, the average MFA degree-holder in the U.S. earns an annual salary of $58,000.

Maria Cominis – a theater professor, professional director and working actress who has published books about acting and who most recently played Mona Clarke on the TV show "Desperate Housewives" – says that she has "never regretted" getting an MFA.

Cominis, who teaches at California State University—Fullerton says people who pursue an MFA are typically seeking an artistic career, because they believe such a career would be fulfilling. Cominis adds that most prospective MFAs understand that it is unlikely they will become rich and famous, but that's besides the point.

"I don't think that anybody goes into the arts to become rich," she says. "I don't think I've ever met anybody – whether it's a playwright, an actor, a designer – that enters the arts to become a gazillionaire."

What types of MFA degrees are there, and how do dual-degree programs fit in?

There are a variety of MFA programs, with programs that specialize in nearly any artistic discipline you can imagine. For instance, there are MFA programs specially tailored to the interests of aspiring fashion designers, dramatic actors, fiction authors, choreographers, ballet dancers, sculptors , arts critics and movie directors.

It is also possible to combine an MFA degree with another graduate credential, such as an MBA degree , if you pursue a dual-degree program. For instance, New York University offers a MBA/MFA graduate program which involves coursework in both the school's Tisch School of the Arts and its Stern School of Business .

"A dual degree may be attractive to students because it allows them to gain expertise in two disparate, but complementary academic domains, in order to set themselves apart in their field and foster innovation across sectors," Kathryn Heidemann, assistant dean of Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy and its College of Fine Arts , wrote in an email. "For example, it's not uncommon now to see the arts and creativity permeate across the fields of health, law, technology, community development, government, and business. However, as dual degrees typically involve earning two separate degrees (which typically involves two separate curricular agendas, faculty/administration and more), this may put all of the onus on the student to 'connect the dots' themselves across disciplines."

Heidemann, who directs Carnegie Mellon University's master of arts management program, says that prospective graduate students who want to combine their interest in art with their passion for another discipline, like business, should consider pursuing an interdisciplinary degree. "With this in mind, it is important to note that there is a strong supply of interdisciplinary degree programs available that offer holistically-designed, cross-disciplinary curricula that allow students to achieve full competency of the arts within a specific cross-sector domain," she wrote in an email.

How long is an MFA program, and how hard is it to get an MFA degree?

MFA programs vary in length, with some accelerated programs lasting only a year and others lasting as long as three or four years. Typically, an MFA program lasts between two and three years, experts say, and a strong MFA program is a demanding one which requires serious commitment. Experts say that an MFA that can be obtained easily, with minimal effort, is of limited utility, since one of the benefits of high-quality MFA programs is that they teach artists how to be disciplined about their creative process and respond to critiques.

Who should get an MFA?

Michael Markowsky – a studio artist with an MFA who teaches on the faculty of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada – says an MFA is a large investment of time, energy and money. It's not right for everybody, but it's been very rewarding for him personally.

"I had a fantastic experience, which I always describe to people as saving me 10 years worth of struggling to refine my art practice and ultimately my life," Markowsky wrote in an email. "It was an intense experience, but it was instrumental in helping me understand the core ideas and themes that run throughout all of the diverse artworks that I make."

Markowsky adds that an MFA is only the right choice for someone who is both passionate about becoming a better artist and interested in learning the history and theory of a particular craft. He notes that someone who pursues an MFA needs to be ready and willing to learn from criticism, but he or she must also be confident enough to know that criticism doesn't necessarily mean failure.

"I often discourage students from pursuing an MFA because I don't believe most of them are ready or willing or capable of undergoing such an intense experience, and therefore it would not only be a waste of money, but also might destroy their interest in making art altogether," he says. "I personally believe someone interested in pursuing an MFA should have both a very clear idea of what they are doing and want to do, and also an extremely open mind to working with people who will ruthlessly challenge those ideas. Anyone who is stubborn and inflexible won't get anything else but frustration out of the exercise, and anyone who is lost and timid will find themselves traumatized and torn to pieces, and – as one of my former MFA advisors once said – incapable of putting themselves back together again."

[Read: Fine Arts Programs Slowly Move Online .]

Experts say it is also important to consider whether your financial, professional and family obligations will permit investment in an MFA program, which tends to be very expensive, time-intensive and stressful.

How much does an MFA degree cost?

The cost of an MFA program varies from school to school and from student to student. Fine arts schools often give scholarships and financial awards. However, sticker prices at the nation's most prestigious fine arts programs are significant. Some nationally renowned art schools charge MFA students more than $30,000 annually for tuition and fees.

Bistram says price was a key factor for her when she was choosing an MFA program. "I knew that paying for my graduate degree would be challenging for me, so I looked for programs that were willing to invest in their students," she says. "I only applied to programs that offered full or partial fellowships. This financial assistance allowed me to spend my two years of graduate school focusing primarily on perfecting my craft, rather than splitting my time between competing priorities, and was extremely rewarding."

How much should prestige matter when choosing an MFA program?

MFA recipients disagree about how much MFA applicants should weigh the importance of a program's reputation and name recognition when choosing a program.

Stockton says some art institutions and galleries in Los Angeles do have a preference for featuring artists with MFAs, so visual artists who want to have their work displayed in prestigious art shows may want to get an MFA. “It's no secret that the art world looks at all kinds of different criteria for deciding who is worthy of working with and who to take seriously, and there is a perception that you are a professional artist, I find, if you have a master’s degree," Stockton says. He notes that the MFA can add credibility to an artist's resume and help him or her get a second look from art curators, but ultimately, the quality of the art is what matters most for artistic career success.

[Read: Fine Arts School Tips for Success .]

Stockton says enrolling in an MFA program with an exceptionally talented cohort of students allows you to learn from those students, both during and after the program, assuming you establish and maintain strong relationship with classmates.

Markowsky notes that another important factor to consider is the quality of professors at an MFA program, since having top-notch artistic mentors in the area of art that you are interested in can be very valuable.

However, experts says prospective MFA students who are unable to gain admittance to the most competitive fine arts schools should find reassurance in the idea that they can become great artists and produce beauitful art, regardless of which art school they attend, so long as they are committed to their craft.

Steve Almond, a published author who earned an MFA in creative writing and who teaches narrative journalism courses at Harvard University , says the quality of a person's artwork is the primary metric that matters in artistic careers, so if someone can become a tremendous artist without going to a big-name art school, that's fine.

Almond says in creative writing, good editors and publishers judge work based on its own merits, rather than the credentials of the person who made it. "What matters is whether it's a gripping story," he says.

What is the best way to judge the quality of an MFA program?

Borchardt says one key thing to look for when evaluating MFA programs is rigor.

"The degree is an intense multiyear commitment to creating a style of art that will separate you in a very difficult market," he says. "It is a study in which you may end up not creating the art that you love or first desired but an art that can be both marketable and self worthy."

Borchardt says a solid MFA program will provide students with highly technical training in their particular art form. "A good program will focus on the technical aspects of how to make art, whether that's learning new painting processes or studies in different firing techniques for ceramics," he wrote. "Knowledge is what needs to be gained to be able to create art that stands the test of time. Art work will flourish out of those studies. Some programs focus on just creating work and not focusing on the processes, but a good program should be technical and offer the freedom to create after the skills are built up....Red flags for a subpar program include limited instruction in technical processes and fundamentals."

How does someone become a competitive applicant for an MFA program?

MFA professors and alumni say the most important component of an MFA application is the quality of the art that is included in the application. Depending on the type of MFA a person is applying for, he or she would either be submitting an artistic portfolio or writing sample, or he or she would be auditioning before a panel of judges.

Bistram says when she applied for an MFA program, the component of her application which she focused on was her portfolio. "The portfolio component of the application was most important in my admissions process," she wrote. "While other graduate programs place a great deal of value on test scores and undergraduate transcripts, MFA programs evaluate a candidate primarily based on the artistic work they can produce."

Off-campus study.

B.F.A. students may take advantage of off-campus study opportunities at AAP NYC and/or Cornell in Rome to gain added exposure to professional and global art worlds. Students should consult with their advisor to plan how their B.F.A. curriculum will coordinate with off-campus study.

Eligibility Requirements

B.F.A. students in good standing with a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.750 or better are eligible to study at Cornell in Rome and/or AAP NYC. Students apply to Cornell in Rome and/or AAP NYC semester through a competitive process determined by the department. Meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the off-campus option, and off-campus study is contingent on adequate enrollment. For additional information, meet with the off-campus study coordinator in the AAP Office of Admissions and Academic Services, 235 Sibley Dome.

The AAP NYC semester is a collaboratively developed and conceptually linked plan of study with studio and theory courses and optional internships that utilize the remarkable resources of New York City. Faculty members include practicing artists, theorists, critics, and curators. Field trips to galleries, museums and artist studios are integrated into the curriculum. Within the context of AAP NYC’s course offerings, optional internship, and immersive exposure to contemporary art and artists, students get an inside look at the urban NYC art world. Each student has access to studio space where they are encouraged to develop work according to their independent practices and may take advantage of group exhibitions in the AAP NYC space. Learn more about AAP NYC .

Schedule Requirements

Students enroll in ART 3003 - New York City Studio   ,   ART 3103 - New York City Seminar   , ART 3805 - Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Metropolitan Studies   , and ART 3903 - NYC Professional Practice   . Students also have the option of undertaking an approved internship .

The Cornell in Rome semester is a collaboratively developed and conceptually linked plan of study with studio and theory courses and optional internships that draw upon the extensive contemporary and cultural resources of Italy and greater Europe. Each student has access to studio space where they are encouraged to develop work according to their independent practices. The semester provides an experience unparalleled for artistic, intellectual, and personal growth where students may develop their studio practice in any medium. Designated art faculty from Ithaca and Rome plan a rich schedule of field trips that relate to the art curriculum. Fieldtrips during past semesters have been to Milan, Venice, Padua, Florence, and Naples as well as nearby Berlin, Germany. Cornell in Rome participants have the opportunity to exhibit in galleries and art spaces locally. Learn more about Cornell in Rome .

Students enroll in ART 3001 - Rome Studio   , and  ART 3102 - Contemporary Rome Seminar   . Students may enroll in additional electives, choosing from Italian and art and architectural history offerings. Students interested in an internship apply for placement and enroll in ART 3902 - International Professional Practice/Internship   .

Further, students wishing to take more than the standard number of credit hours should have a cumulative grade point average of 3.000 or better. Petitions should be submitted only if there are clearly extraordinary circumstances that merit special consideration. In order for a petition to be approved, circumstances must be extenuating. Once submitted and acted upon, petitions can only be reversed by subsequent petition.

Appeals: A student has ten days from the time of the petitions decision to appeal the decision in writing. Appeals should be submitted directly to the Department of Art, 224 Tjaden Hall, for review and vote by the full tenure/tenure-track art faculty.  The faculty decision on the appeal is final. No further appeals will be considered.

The five-year concurrent degree option allows students to earn a B.F.A. as well as a bachelor of arts (B.A.), or a bachelor of science (B.S.) from another college at Cornell University. Students usually apply to the concurrent degree option during their second year. Concurrent degree candidates must satisfy all requirements for both degrees and earn a minimum of 160 academic credits. At least 64 of the total credits must come from courses offered in the Department of Art. Concurrent degree candidates are eligible to participate in Cornell in Rome and/or AAP NYC in the third and/or fourth year.  It is expected that a concurrent degree candidate will complete ART 3005 - Advanced Practice    in the fourth year, ART 4100 - Senior Seminar    and ART 4001 - Thesis I    in the fall semester of the fifth year, and ART 4002 - Thesis II    in the spring semester of fifth year.

Minor in Fine Arts (for Non-Departmental Students)

The art minor is an opportunity for students who are not enrolled in the Department of Art and who have a serious interest and/or background in studio art to continue their commitment to art at the college level.

The curriculum for the minor in fine arts totals a minimum of 24 credit hours. All coursework must be completed at Cornell University, and a grade of C or better is required. In addition, any coursework used to fulfill the minor cannot also be used to fulfill specific requirements of the student’s major.

The Department of Art will verify completion of the minor and the minor will be recorded on the official transcript at the time of degree completion.

Questions regarding the minor can be directed to the AAP Office of Admissions and Academic Services, 235 Sibley Dome.

Master of Fine Arts

M.F.A. Academic Requirements

Good Academic Standing

Leave of absence, additional m.f.a. program information.

The two-year Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) program in art encourages both interdisciplinary and medium-specific practices, and questions a pedagogy informed solely by Western models and traditions of art.

The program is an intensive and intimate community which has an exceptional breadth and integration of its context. Each student works closely with a special thesis advisor of their choosing that can encompass faculty members from across the university, allowing for a specialized and unique experience.

Master of Fine Arts Requirements

Academic requirements.

The MFA program is a two-year, full-time program of study. Students are required to be in-residence for the duration of the program.

  • 36 credit hours of studio work, 9 credits each semester for a letter grade
  • 12 credits of MFA Graduate Seminar, 3 credits each semester for a letter grade
  • 12 credit hours in academic subjects outside the Department of Art for a letter grade
  • In addition, M.F.A. students must successfully complete 18 credit hours of Art History.  The art history requirement can be satisfied with undergraduate coursework taken prior to matriculating* and/or graduate coursework taken at Cornell. If the art history requirement has not been satisfied prior to matriculating, the art history credits taken at Cornell can be applied toward the 12 credit hours in academic subjects that are taken outside the Department of Art. *Undergraduate Art History : Students who have already completed art history coursework may apply for equivalency credit. Credit will only be applied through an approved course equivalency request, and this process should be completed in the summer prior to matriculation. Equivalency requests are reviewed by the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) and must meet college and university transfer credit criteria. Please refer to the AAP Office of Admissions and Academic Services for specific procedures and deadlines.

M.F.A. Advisory Committee

  • Each graduate student will have a three-member M.F.A. Advisory Committee composed of an Advisor of Record from the Department of Art’s general graduate faculty, and two additional members. One of these additional members must be from the Department of Art’s general or divisional graduate faculty; the other may be graduate faculty from outside the Department. In the first semester of study, the Director of Graduate Studies will assign the student an M.F.A. Advisory Committee. By the end of the first semester, the student has the option to select an Advisor of Record and two members by applying the requirement above. In addition to the required members, the student may add other graduate faculty from Cornell. All members of the M.F.A. Advisory Committee must be general or divisional members of the Graduate Faculty.
  • M.F.A. students must meet with their M.F.A. Advisory Committee members as a group a minimum of two times per semester, and must meet individually with each special committee member, a minimum of one time per semester, exclusive of the end-of-semester grading reviews. M.F.A. students must schedule two of the meetings with their full M.F.A. Advisory Committee, the first of which must take place by October 12 in the fall semester, and by March 12 in the spring semester.
  • In the event that a committee member takes a leave (sabbatical or otherwise), the student is required to choose another grading member as a replacement. This replacement must be a general or divisional member of the Cornell Graduate Faculty.
  • Any member may resign at any time from an M.F.A. Advisory Committee; failure to reconstitute a three-person M.F.A. Advisory Committee precludes a student’s further registration in the graduate program.

Thesis Exhibition and Artist Statement

  • Each year the Director of Graduate Studies will establish the due dates and deadlines of the thesis work. Students should refer to the M.F.A. Schedule and Deadlines for due dates. Students are responsible for turning in completed work to their committee by stated deadlines. The college Registrar establishes dates for completion of the degree requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of these dates and comply with stated deadlines. The artist statement must be submitted at least 5 days prior to the final review.
  • The thesis exhibition must consist of work which furthers and/or exemplifies the student’s ongoing creative production. The student shall be prepared to verbally address both the artist statement and visual thesis during the time of exhibition. The M.F.A. Advisory Committee will direct the thesis review and it will be open to all interested faculty members.
  • The artist statement must deal with the aesthetic, conceptual, and/or art historical issues of the students’ creative work. The M.F.A. Committee must approve of the content, approach and length of the statement.
  • The format and length of the artist statement should be determined by the student’s M.F.A.  Advisory Committee, and must be completed and delivered to that committee prior to the thesis exhibition and oral examination. The statement is part of the final review, and therefore no extensions will be granted.

To be in good academic standing, an M.F.A. student must:

  • Successfully complete 9  letter-graded credits of studios and 3 letter-graded credits of seminar each semester
  • Earn no grade lower than C- in studio work
  • Have a three-person M.F.A. Advisor Committee constituted and meet with the committee according to the required meeting schedule

At the end of each semester, the M.F.A. Advisory Committee reviews the records of each student who is not in good academic standing, review the students’ progress, and makes specific recommendations for the student to improve performance within a specified period of time not to exceed one semester. These specific recommendations and time limits will also be clearly stated in a letter to the student from the Advisor of Record with a copy to the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) and the student record. At the end of the specified period the student will be reviewed again by the committee and if satisfactory the student may proceed with the M.F.A. program.

If student progress remains unsatisfactory the Advisor of Record will resign immediately in a letter to the student with copies to the DGS and student record. This will terminate the student’s registration in the M.F.A. program and all financial support will cease.

If the M.F.A. Advisory Committee unanimously fails a student on an end of semester or thesis exhibition grading review and refuses to allow further review, the student may not continue in the graduate program. The student can appeal this through a formal petition. The student can continue in the program only if the majority Art Faculty approves the petition to do so.

1. Leaves will be granted at the discretion of the M.F.A. Committee. Leaves will be granted for a minimum of one-year in length. At the end of the leave, the student must either request to return from leave or request to renew the leave. A leave of absence may be renewed up to two times. After three years, a leave will convert to a withdrawal from the program. Once withdrawn, a student wishing to return to study must re-apply for admission.

2. Return from a voluntary leave of absence is at the discretion of the graduate field committee, and funding is not guaranteed. Requests for spring-semester return must be made by October 1, and requests for fall-semester return must be made by March 1. Failure to return from leave or renew a leave at the end of the one year term will result in withdrawal from the program. Once withdrawn, a student wishing to return to study must reapply for admission. Students wishing to return to the program must complete a Request to Return from a Leave of Absence form.

  • Studio space will be provided for each graduate student, based on the available space in the college. Students must comply with all departmental and university rules and regulations regarding and maintaining this space.
  •  Requests and supporting statements must be submitted in writing to the advisory committee. All committee members must approve and sign the request, such requests will be kept on file in the student’s official record. Requests that are not granted or unresolved may be appealed to the Dean of the Graduate School. The students’ committee may consult with the Art Department faculty in an advisory capacity regarding the conflict.
  • The graduate student is responsible for keeping track of and completing all program requirements.
  • Students requesting a leave of absence should submit a Leave of Absence request form to the AAP Office of Admissions and Academic Services, 235 Sibley Dome which explains the reason for the leave. Leaves are granted at the discretion of the DGS, M.F.A. Advisory Committee, and College. Leave dates must also be approved by the University Registrar. Requests to return from leave are granted at the discretion of the DGS and M.F.A. Advisory Committee, and funding is not guaranteed.
  • The M.F.A. candidate must comply with all College, Graduate School, and Cornell University requirements including, but not limited to, timely filing of appropriate forms and requested information.

Financial Support

  • Partial tuition support, when available, is given to all M.F.A. students.
  • Part-time Graduate Assistantships, a component of the program, will provide a stipend to all M.F.A. students. Students work 6 hours per week for their graduate assistantship (stipend). The assistantship may include in and out of classroom responsibilities. The student is required to keep track of their graduate assistant hours.
  • In the event that a student must stay past two years to complete the degree requirements, no financial support or studio space will be provided.

Art Course and Fee Information

Course offerings may vary by semester and year. Students should consult the Class Roster to determine which courses will be offered in a given semester.

Art students should expect to spend a minimum of $1,000 and up to $3,000 for expendable supplies each academic year, depending on academic level, courses selected, and projects chosen.

Studio Courses & Seminars

As an MFA student, you'll develop your studio practice by contemplating your work across disciplines. You’ll work closely with faculty and staff to develop a personalized studio curriculum, and will have access to resources across Tufts.

MFA students also take part in seminars that explore a variety of subjects within contemporary art. Seminars provide intensive individual guidance, mentoring, and a combination of individual and group critique. You'll advance your presentation, research, and art-making skills, and position yourself for a long and productive independent art practice.

View studio courses

At SMFA, each area of study is a chance to immerse yourself in a specific discipline, or explore a range of different creative modes. Areas of study are how you'll deepen and expand your practice while exploring what it will take for you to realize your vision. You'll build an individualized set of skills and experiences that you will carry with you into your professional career.

Explore areas of study

A Master of Fine Arts from SMFA combines intensive studio arts training with the immersive liberal arts curriculum of a major research university. All MFA students take one graduate-level art history class and three liberal arts and sciences electives that are important to their thesis, studio practice, and artistic development.

Some MFA students may choose to also apply to the Tufts Museum Studies program. If accepted, the Museum Studies program's five courses count toward a student's non-studio course requirements for the MFA program.

Learn more about Liberal Arts & Sciences

Critiques are a crucial part of our MFA program, and a driving force in the growth and transformation of your practice. You'll receive ongoing feedback through informal discussions with faculty, fellow students, visiting artists, and curators, while formal critiques like Review Boards and the Graduate Group Critique are important checkpoints for assessing progress and growth. Every step of your SMFA journey is a chance to think about the ideas and techniques that propel your work and creative voice.

Explore Review Boards

MFA Thesis & Exhibition

The MFA program culminates in a self-curated final exhibition where you consider the broad implications of your practice and the questions that your work seeks to answer. You'll also write a thesis that articulates the process, research, and intention that anchors your work, and defend it before a committee of faculty and a visiting juror. Both the thesis and the exhibition are significant achievements and a celebration of your evolution as an artist. They demonstrate that you are ready to succeed as a working professional artist, whatever form your career might take.

MFA (Master of Fine Arts) - Course, Admission, Eligibility, Syllabus, Salary, Scope

  • What is an M.F.A.?

The Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) program is designed to help creatively inclined people refine their creative skills to produce more meaningful, interesting, and polished art forms. The course therefore, seeks to elevate the art form, which can be technologically intensive fields like graphic designing and film sound mixing, or non-tech forms like dance, drawing, and painting. Today M.F.A courses are available for both the visual and performing arts .

Latest: Top M.F.A. Colleges in India

Types of M.F.A.

M.f.a. eligibility, m.f.a. admissions, top mfa exams, m.f.a. courses, m.f.a. specializations, m.f.a. syllabus, advantages of m.f.a., m.f.a. salary, scope of m.f.a., careers opportunities after m.f.a.

MFA (Master of Fine Arts) - Course, Admission, Eligibility, Syllabus, Salary, Scope

The M.F.A program includes professional, rigorous courses, and importantly offers a scientific understanding of the art discipline. So, by the time the student passes out of the course, he or she also develops a critical eye. Also, one key area that differentiates an MFA degree is that it offers a more practical learning experience, unlike MA programs which are more inclined towards critically studying the theory of art.

Master of Fine Arts Highlights

The MFA degree is a two-year program with specializations in various visual and performing art forms. The degree is almost always available in combination with a specialization, like MFA in Applied Arts, MFA in Painting, and MFA in Dancing. But a simple MFA degree, though not very common, is also offered in a few colleges like Kurukshetra University.

Before applying for admission to a college, one should know about the M.F.A eligibility criteria prescribed for the program. This will save the candidate from unnecessary heartbreak later on, if, say, admission is refused due to a mismatch in eligibility requirements.

Qualifying degree: The candidate needs to have a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (BFA) from a recognized institute or college in the relevant specialization.

Marks in the qualifying examination: Colleges like the Amity School of Fine arts require a minimum of 50 per cent marks in BFA, while others like Jamia Millia Islamia demand at least 60% aggregate marks in graduation. So it is a good idea to refer to the college one is applying for admission to get a clear picture.

Age Limit: A majority of colleges don’t have any age limits, but few like AMU, require that the candidate be not more than 27 years of age as on July 1 in the admission year.

Admission to M.F.A program is usually done through two channels - 1) through an entrance exam, or 2) based on marks of a qualifying exam. Institutes like AMU, BHU, and Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith conduct university-level entrance exams. Delhi University, College of Art, however, doesn’t conduct any entrance exam, rather shortlisting candidates based on qualifying exam marks.

Shortlisted candidates are invited for an interview/viva after which seat allotment is made. Even in the case of colleges that conduct entrance exams, they are specialization-specific. So, the test pattern and questions set may vary across specializations. Going by this definition, the syllabus and pattern of tests for MFA (Acting) will be different from MFA (Photography). A third option, albeit uncommon, is meanwhile used by Amity University, whose selection process is based on video responses by candidates to questions posed by the institute through a video link on its Admission Microsite.

MFA admission process

There are no national-level or state-level MFA exams that are conducted for admission to the course. In fact, institutes like AMU conduct department level examinations for admission. Other institutes that conduct internal exams include Banasthali Vidyapeeth, which conducts an aptitude test for selecting candidates.

One particular aspect of these MFA exams is they are specialization specific. To give an example, for a course in MFA in Music, the test may include a music performance by the candidate, while for a program in MFA in Painting, the students won’t have to prove his or her vocal skills.

The two-year course in MFA will help the candidate hone their existing, but sometimes dormant, artistic skills. The course is generally open to candidates who have completed a graduate degree. Also, the objective of the MFA course is not only to educate but also to reform the skills of candidates so that they reach their potential.

The syllabus for MFA courses will vary depending on the area of specialization selected by the candidate. For example, the syllabus for MFA in Painting may include topics like Mural Painting, Portrait Drawing, and Creative Drawing. However, the syllabus for MFA (Applied Arts) won’t have all these topics and may include topics like graphic designing, visualization, and foreign business management.

There are various types of M.F.A programmes covering almost every artistic discipline. These specialized M.F.A programmes are tailored to the needs of fiction writers, dramatists, choreographers, ballet dancers, painters, theatre and movie directors, and fashion designers.

Here are some of the popular M.F.A specialisations:

Top colleges to study m.f.a..

There are only a handful of colleges and universities that offer the MFA courses. While some of these colleges offer a single specialization, others may offer multiple specializations; refer to the table below.

Top colleges to study MFA: Specializations, fee, course duration

The syllabus of M.F.A would be specific to the area of specialization. For example, if the candidate is pursuing a course in MFA (Applied Arts), it has a different syllabus than say MFA (Painting) course. Further the M.F.A syllabus will vary depending on the college, as each college tends to have its characteristic features. Given below are sample syllabus

An M.F.A. is a postgraduate-level degree program that is based on the study of aesthetic arts. A Master of Fine Arts helps individuals to learn and apply the skills of visual and performing arts and acquire numerous career opportunities. Candidates enrolled in the master of fine arts program can opt for a career in advertising, clothing, dance studios, publishing houses, magazines, and various other fields.

Just like an MFA degree holder may pursue different job roles, the salary drawn by him or her would also be different based on the specialization and job role. The salary structure for some of the common job roles is given in the table below.

Source: PayScale

The student after completion of the program may use the skill set to enhance their respective art forms and advance their careers. The MFA course will build the capacity within the candidate to solve problems at all levels using a systematic and critical approach. The candidate will also be able to better articulate their ideas after the course. Meanwhile, time management training will help meet tight deadlines without compromising on quality.

If the candidate wishes to go into research academics, that option is also open through a Ph.D. course.

The student after earning the MFA degree may work in various capacities, be it in the role of a film director, photographer, graphic designer, etc. Some of the popular career opportunities after M.F.A are given below.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

Academic Year in Russia

River running through city in Russia with buildings and bridge in background.

After completing your initial summer of candidacy in Vermont, you will take mainstream classes with native speakers at a Russian university for an academic year in Moscow, Yaroslavl, or Irkutsk.

The Middlebury School in Russia offers three distinct opportunities for students to immerse themselves in the study of Russian language and culture.

Moscow is the center of Russian cultural and political life. Whether spotting Lenin’s ghost in Red Square, exploring neighborhood boutiques, or sampling authentic Georgian cuisine, Moscow offers all the excitement of a cosmopolitan city. Students primarily take their courses at the Middlebury School of Russian. Middlebury’s host institution, the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU), offers a full range of courses. Students may also choose to take courses at the Shchukin Theater Institute or the Higher School of Economics (HSE).

Known as the Pearl of Siberia, Irkutsk offers charms of its own, including classical theater and a culture influenced by both European and indigenous traditions. Nearby Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest freshwater lake, is home to hundreds of unique species and is a critical center for environmental studies. In Irkutsk, you will study at Irkutsk State University, the oldest institution of higher learning in Eastern Siberia.

Yaroslavl has an unmistakable feeling of tradition and history, and its Kremlin walls give this city of 650,000 residents the feel of a small town. Onion-domed churches are at the end of seemingly every street, and its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Russia’s first professional theater company was founded here, and its school of icon and fresco painting competed with the Novgorod and Pskov schools. Yaroslavl’s vibrant social life gives it a youthful, energetic feel that blends well with its traditional customs. In Yaroslavl, the School in Russia program is based at Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University.

Guidelines and Handbook

Please review Middlebury’s guidelines for graduate study abroad and the Graduate School in Russia handbook .

Housing and Student Life

Graduate students have the option to request a room in the international students’ dormitory at RGGU (currently 530 rubles/day), but space is often very limited. Students can also choose to do a homestay option—living in a Russian home often proves to be one of the most rewarding aspects of a student’s time in Russia.

Graduate students are welcome to make their own arrangements for accommodation, but the School in Russia cannot offer assistance with private housing options.

After Shutting Down, These Golf Courses Went Wild

Most defunct golf courses get paved over, but a number are getting transformed into ecological life rafts for wildlife, plants — and people.

The San Geronimo Golf Course is being reclaimed and rewilded and is now known as San Geronimo Commons. Credit... Jim Wilson/The New York Times

Cara Buckley, who is not a golfer, traveled to the San Geronimo Commons in Northern California to report on its transformation.

  • Published Feb. 15, 2024 Updated Feb. 16, 2024

There was scraggly grass in one sand trap and wooden blocks and a toy castle in another, evidence of children at play. People were walking their dogs on the fairway, which was looking rather ragged and unkempt. This was only to be expected.

Nowadays, these grounds are mowed just twice a year, and haven’t been doused with pesticides or rodenticides since 2018, which was when this 157-acre stretch of land stopped being the San Geronimo Golf Course, and began a journey toward becoming wild, or at least wilder, once again.

A small number of shuttered golf courses around the country have been bought by land trusts, municipalities and nonprofit groups and transformed into nature preserves, parks and wetlands. Among them are sites in Detroit, Pennsylvania , Colorado, the Finger Lakes of upstate New York, and at least four in California.

“We quickly recognized the high restoration value, the conservation value, and the public access recreational value,” said Guillermo Rodriguez, California state director with the nonprofit Trust for Public Land, which bought the San Geronimo course, in Marin County, for $8.9 million in 2018 and renamed it San Geronimo Commons.

People stand under a large oak tree with branches that extend in all directions.

During a recent tour of the land, which sits low in San Geronimo Valley, less than an hour’s drive north of San Francisco, Mr. Rodriguez motioned to rolling hills that serve as habitat for wildlife, including hawks that were wheeling overhead. “On either side, you have public lands,” he said. “This was the missing link.”

The restoration of the San Geronimo land is still underway. Floodplains will be reconnected, and a fish barrier has been removed, allowing access to more robust migratory and breeding grounds for endangered coho salmon and threatened steelhead trout. Trails are planned that would skirt sensitive habitat, making the land a publicly accessible ecological life raft, starkly different from its time as a golf course.

“It’s a great place, and it’s beautiful,” said Charles Esposito, 76, a retiree who was enjoying a recent stroll. “I love it.”

In recent years, the golf industry has taken steps to lighten its environmental toll in places by using less water, sowing pollinator-friendly plants and decreasing pesticide and fertilizer use.

Yet the resources and chemicals needed for pristine emerald turf have made the sport an environmentalists’ bête noire. America’s roughly 16,000 golf courses use 1.5 billion gallons of water a day, according to the United States Golf Association, and are collectively treated with 100,000 tons of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium a year.

The United States has more golf courses than McDonald’s locations and also has more than any other country, accounting for about 42 percent of all courses worldwide, according to the National Golf Foundation.

That oversupply, coupled with development pressures, has led more golf courses to close than to open since 2006. A return to nature, or a version of it, is still relatively rarity for former golf courses, most of which end up in the hands of commercial or residential developers, according to the National Golf Foundation. One recent example was a former 36-hole golf facility in New Hampshire that Target bought for nearly $122 million in 2023 to build a new distribution center.

For a golf course to be turned into a public green space, an unlikely set of stars need to align. There has to be a willing seller, and, crucially, a conservation-minded buyer who can afford to not just purchase the land but to restore it. According to Eric Bosman, an urban planner with the design and planning firm Kimley-Horne, 28 former courses were transformed into public green spaces between 2010 and October 2022.

But the number appears to be slowly growing. In 2023, the former Cedar View Golf course, on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in upstate New York, was bought by the Finger Lakes Land Trust . Another nonprofit, the West Lake Art Conservation Center, plans to transform some 230 acres of the shuttered Lakeview Golf & Country Club in Owasco into a nature preserve.

Though rewilding a golf course may disappoint players, it can bring big benefits to animals, plants and people.

A few hundred miles south of San Geronimo, on a stretch of land owned by the University of California, Santa Barbara, the 64-acre spread that once housed the Ocean Meadows Golf Course is now an estuary surrounded by grasslands, salt marsh and islands of coastal sage scrub.

The previous owner had envisioned selling the course to a housing developer, but was thwarted by the 2008 recession, according to Lisa Stratton, director of ecosystem management for the university’s Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration, which manages the land. People at the school enlisted help from the Trust for Public Land, which bought the property for $7 million in 2013 and donated it to the university.

The extensive restoration of the Santa Barbara site took years and was funded through $16 million in local, state and federal grants. It included relocating 350,000 cubic yards of soil that the golf course developers had taken from nearby mesas and pushed atop wetlands to create the course decades ago. The rehabilitated wetlands now reduce flooding risks and guard against sea-level rise, Dr. Stratton said. The change also meant that nearby homes were no longer in a federal flood zone. Without golf balls whizzing overhead, the land has become habitat for migratory shorebirds, among them black-necked stilts, greater yellowlegs and sandpipers, and has even drawn the secretive American bittern. Newly installed underground rock structures provide habitat for rabbits, ground squirrels, mice and burrowing owls.

Two federally endangered plants, the Ventura marsh milkvetch and salt marsh birds beak, have also been established on the site, part of an effort to move some plants north as their natural habitats grow too warm. Students from the university have been involved with the restoration work and have tracked hundreds of animal species.

The public has embraced the property, too. This past October, members of the Chumash tribe performed a cultural burn on part of the grassland, and the site draws birders and kids on bikes, who use its pathways to get to school.

“What we’ve learned is how important these areas are for people; that emotionally and psychologically they need them,” said Dr. Stratton.

But the transformations are not always seamless. After the Trust for Public Land bought the San Geronimo site, it planned to sell it to Marin County. But a group of local golf advocates successfully sued to block the county’s purchase, saying that an environmental analysis wasn’t completed. They also advanced a ballot measure to limit what the county could do with the land. It was defeated, with some 70 percent of voters in San Geronimo opting for the rewilding to proceed.

Though restoration was delayed, conservation easements were secured for the bulk of the site, preventing future development, and a new plan was developed for Marin County to acquire the land. The county intends to pay the Trust for Public Land $4.9 million for a parcel where the clubhouse stands, and build a firehouse there, according to Dennis Rodoni, the county supervisor. The Trust for Public Land then plans to transfer ownership of the remaining 130-odd open acres to the county.

In Palm Springs, some neighbors of the former Mesquite Golf & Country Club resisted plans to restore that land to a natural state, saying they preferred the vista provided by a manicured 18-hole championship course.

“We once had a very nice view that looked out on the golf course to the mountains,” said Don Olness, who serves on the board of the homeowner’s association of an adjoining condo development. But since the Oswit Land Trust bought the golf course for $9 million in 2022, the area has filled with weeds, dead trees and fallen branches, he said. “It’s basically an unkempt area,” Mr. Olness said.

Citing a lease agreement with the golf course owners, the homeowners’ association has sued to temporarily stop any changes made by the land trust, which bought the course with a donation from Brad Prescott, a philanthropist, and renamed it the Prescott Preserve.

Jane Garrison, the land trust’s founder and executive director, said the pending lawsuit is preventing the trust from accessing a multimillion dollar grant needed to properly restore the land. But of the trust’s five properties, the Prescott Preserve has quickly become the most popular.

The trust removed poison from the course’s maintenance shed, along with poison and gopher traps throughout the site, Ms. Garrison said. She and colleagues came across dead rabbits and owls and an exam confirmed that one ground squirrel had died after consuming rodenticide, which makes predators such as coyotes and bobcats susceptible to mange.

“When you remove all the poison and stop that cycle, you give those species a chance to recover,” Ms. Garrison said.

Though the restoration is just beginning, wildflowers and plants have already reappeared, she said. About 100 native trees, including desert willows, ironwoods and mesquite, were donated by a local nursery and planted. The trust decided to maintain on-site ponds with recycled water because climate change has made it difficult for wildlife to find water.

The group hopes to acquire more golf courses in Palm Springs, which, despite being in a desert, is home to many courses. “When the land is gone, it’s gone forever, once they build condos,” Ms. Garrison. “But when you save it, it’s saved forever. You can’t put a price tag on that.”

AC receives $100,000 safety grant from Texas Mutual

Amarillo College (AC) received a $100,000 grant from Texas Mutual for continued funding for the college's Safety and Environment Technology program during a Thursday morning check presentation held at the Washington Street campus in the Palo Duro Room.

The grant will provide free workplace safety courses for community employers, workers and the general public. According to the college, AC's risk management program, launched in 2016, was created to provide training for increased safety awareness and to reduce work related accidents and injuries. In 2023 alone, the college provided safety training classes to more than 900 students.

"One of the things about the partnership between Amarillo College and Texas Mutual is its longevity. We are in our ninth year now, and over those nine years, each year there is $100,000 given to the college to support the region, as well as the community itself and the employers," Scott Bain, regional safety services manager for Texas Mutual, said.

"This will continue; Amarillo College does a great job in supporting the many employers here, in that they host these trainings to keep employees safe," Bain added.

Classes offered include first aid, CPR, AED, fire extinguisher training, wilderness protection, active shooter training, confined space training, mental health first aid, workplace self defense classes, many OSHA protection courses and much more.

"Everything we do in those courses are free to the public; there are no requirements. It is really easy registration. I always overbook, so there is room for extras who want to come, and we are able to get as many people trained as we can," Jeff Wallick, Director of Sales and Promotions at AC, said.

Texas Mutual senior safety services consultant Paxton LeMond spoke about why safety knowledge is important for the local workforce and why they continue to fund those services through AC.

"Amarillo does a really great job in supporting the community, local businesses their employees, especially in the safety realm. We always want to do everything that we can to prevent workplace accidents. That is the ultimate goal, and we do that through the support we offer, just like the $100,000 safety grant offered here today," LeMond said.

"We enjoy working with AC. We want to cover every type of risk in any industry across the state, and we feel like AC offers that," LeMond added.
