Religion & Spirituality

Religion and spirituality • What is religion? • Religion is likely as important in shaping an individual’s persona as gender, class, or ethnicity. • All religions and religious groups are important, especially to those who belong to them. • What is spirituality? • What is the difference between religion and spirituality? • Why is it important to discuss religiosity and spirituality in counseling? • In the United States, 84% of the population claim to have a preference for some religious group. • Majority of Americans believe in higher power (94%) and actively involved in churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious institutions (68%) • Religion and spirituality contribute positively to mental health • Religion influences the way many people think, perceive, and behave – a part of who we are. • 60% of people’s decisions are based on their religiosity and/or spirituality • ASERVIC up to 3:56

Why Have Counselors Not Been Willing to Address Spirituality in the Past? • Conflict between science and religion • Association of religion/spirituality with pathology (Freud: religion = illusion, infantile, fear-induced repression; Ellis: distorted thinking • Belief that religion/spirituality are the right of clergy and spiritual leaders (boundary setting) • Lack of training on how to integrate spirituality/religion • Mental health practitioners own unresolved issues regarding spirituality/religion

How does one obtain a Religious Identity? Most Americans are born into the religion of their parents, later joining that same body. In the U.S., individuals are always free to change their religion or to choose no religion. Religion may be the primary micro-culturewith which individuals identify.

Religion as a way of life • How might each group treat individuals from different religions? • How might you work with others different from yourself if you are from group one?

What are some spiritual practices you might use with clients? How would you decide? Focusing Guided imagery Meditation/Yoga Connection with Nature – walks, observing Prayer Centering Prayer Reading spiritual literature Helping others – looking beyond yourself (service) Music Forgiveness Others?

What about Atheism and Agnosticism? Apatheism? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZpREDn4NFA Definitions This group is largely ignored (15-20%US) Respect & Recognize marginalization Stereotype: self-indulgent & disregard for others Focus on natural world They alone are responsible for creating meaning and purpose Morality – share same moral crises as others Death & Dying – Purpose Suggestions – see p. 156 article

What about agnostics, atheists, and apatheists? • Agnostic: Unknowable about God and nature of things • Atheist: There is no God/God is manmade (science) • Apatheist: Acting with apathy/disbelief in God

Fowler’s Model of Spiritual Development

Fowler’s Model of Faith • What are the premises of Fowler’s model? • Faith spans one’s entire life • Faith meant a dynamic, trusting orientation toward life, others, and a Higher power • Faith gives direction to people’s life, links self to others, enables people to face life’s challenges • What is the value of having a model of faith?

Stage 0 Undifferentiated Faith • Typical Age Ranges (Birth-2 yrs) • Characterized by the individual’s interaction with environment. • Trust in caregiver – similar to Erikson’s trust versus mistrust • Stage Transition: When thought and language open the use of symbols/rituals in play.

Stage I Intuitive-Projective faith • Typical Age Range (3-7 yrs) • Child develops awareness of others and self (albeit through the lens of egocentrism) • Imagination allows for conception of religious/spiritual symbols (cult like characteristics) • Children’s images of God are largely reflection of relationship with parents • Stage Transition: Concrete thinking that initiates separation from imagination and reality.

Stage 2 Mythic-Literal faith • Typical age range (8yrs.-adol.) • Boundaries between imagination and reality begin to become established. • Story/Narrative become a major element in spirituality with symbols being one-dimensional and literal. • Elements of good vs bad – God rewards/punishes • God is anthropomorphic – human elements

Stage 2 Mythic-Literal faith • Decline of egocentrism and increase in reciprocity • Become disillusioned when find “bad things happen to good people” • Stage transition: Contradictions in literal interpretation of Narratives.

Stage 3 Synthetic-Conventional faith • Typical Age Range (Adolescence-Adulthood) • Characterized by conformity and authority resting in external sources. • Accept and value the evaluation of others • Beliefs are more tacitly than actively accepted.

Stage 3 Synthetic-Conventional Faith • Challenges to “demythologize” beliefs are seen as a threat. • Conventional - an individual beliefs connect him/her to community • Hunger for a close, personal relationship with higher power • Stage Transition: reflection on conflict between authority sources.

Stage 4 Individuative-Reflective faith • Typical Age Range (Young Adulthood-Midlife) • Take Individual responsibility for worldviews • Examine personal values • Demythologize • Tensions • Individuality vs. group membership • Strongly Held Feelings vs. Requirements of Objectivity

Stage 4 Individuative-Reflective faith • Strengths: capacity for reflection and rational analysis • Weakness: Disregarding the unconscious and intangible elements of spirituality • Stage Transition: Realizations regarding complexities of spiritual reality that logic cannot fully explain.

Stage 5 Conjunctive FaithMost do not reach this stage - 1/6 • Frequently able to engage in dialogue with persons of divergent faith that result in deeper knowing in their own spiritual journey. • Literal symbology has already been contested, and individuals seek more comprehensive (possibly metaphorical) experience of symbols.

Conjunctive Faith continued • Recognition of limited capacity of faith systems to explain the whole of existence/life/universe, but do not hesitate to engage. • Struggle with personal insights/predominant cultural beliefs. • Frequently the highest stage attained.

Stage 6Universalizing Faith • Often described as “enlightened” • Deeply principled; experience a deep participation in a power that transforms the world. • Activists for justice – live in love and justice • Often experience threat to personal & physical safety due to subversive elements

Griffith & Griggs adaptation • Spiritual Infancy (Diffusion) • Interest in spirituality is non-existent or self-serving • Frequently engage in extrinsic religiosity; spiritual practices engaged in solely for reward or social acceptance. • Spiritual Childhood (Foreclosure) • A stage during which spirituality is socialized and is primarily used to meet the expectations of others. • Spiritual Adolescence (Moratorium) • A stage of disillusionment and rebellion. • During this stage, frequently dogma is rejected as the individual seeks his/her new answers to fundamental questions. • Spiritual Adulthood (Achievement) • Spirituality is internalized • Forms the core of one’s being • Is a pervasive element in the life of the individual

Spirituality: Points of Reflection with Your Client? • Conception of the absolute or divine • Finding meaning through one’s spirituality • Connecting with a higher power and others in a religious community • Appreciating and embracing the mystery of life • Experiencing a sense of freedom • Engaging in rituals and religious practices • Giving and receiving forgiveness • Experiencing hope • Growing in knowledge of one’s faith • Being aware of the present moment

Controversy Swirls Around Mike Johnson's Invocation of God in GOP Strategy

H ouse Speaker Mike Johnson’s recent presentation to fellow Republicans emphasizing the need for divine guidance in political leadership has stirred a flurry of controversy. Johnson, who is second in line for the presidency, delivered a speech invoking God’s authority and guidance in maintaining the GOP’s majority. The presentation did not sit well with some, casting a spotlight on the deep intertwining of religion and politics within certain factions of the party.

Johnson, known for his Christian fundamentalist beliefs, conducted seminars prior to his speakership promoting the United States as a “Christian nation” and has consistently voiced support for conservative Christian viewpoints while in office. At the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance (NGPR), he underscored a spiritual call to arms against perceived moral decay. This event sharply contrasted with the traditional and more ecumenical National Prayer Breakfast attended by President Joe Biden.

The NGPR featured a variety of far-right Christian nationalist pastors and leaders, including Pastor Ché Ahn and the “apostle” Dutch Sheets, both of whom have made controversial claims about the need for Christians to dominate societal spheres to hasten Jesus’ return. In this context, Johnson prayed for “Solomonic wisdom” to fulfill God’s will in Congress, avoiding direct engagement with the more extreme views expressed by his colleagues.

The assembly at the Museum of the Bible saw other lawmakers joining Johnson in making declarations that were not inclusive of all faiths or those with none. Representative Greg Steube and Representative María Elvira Salazar made explicit calls to spiritual warfare, with Steube invoking supernatural struggle and Salazar aiming to “tie the hands of Satan.”

The event’s proceedings began symbolically with the blowing of shofars, meant to represent a “call to arms” and a sign of struggle before a “holy and righteous God.” The keynote speaker, “messianic rabbi” Jonathan Cahn, framed current cultural wars over secularism, sexual rights, and abortion as a direct confrontation with false deities.

In his elevation to the role of House Speaker, Johnson cited divine providence, quoting Scripture and noting historical symbols of faith present in the House chamber. His views have often been in opposition to the broadly accepted notion of separation of church and state, and he has emphasized the importance of religious and moral virtue in maintaining a healthy society.

Johnson’s ascent to the speakership coincided with discussions in Congress that examined the rise of Christian nationalism, a day marked by conflicting ideas about the role of faith in governance. His stance has received praise from figures like Brent Leatherwood of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, further highlighting his connection with evangelical Christianity.

This development in the GOP, steered by Johnson’s leadership, signals a potential deepening of the conversation and conflict over the extent of religion’s role in American politics. With the memory of January 6 still fresh, and with ties to former President Donald Trump who supported Johnson’s nomination, the interplay between faith and policy under Speaker Johnson is expected to be closely watched and debated.

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s recent presentation […]

'I’m not at church.' Even the GOP is balking at Speaker Mike Johnson's religiosity

While the U.S House was ignoring the Israel-Ukraine aid package passed by the Senate and starting a two-week Presidents’ Day recess , House Speaker Mike Johnson , R-La., and his leadership team went to Miami for a retreat and, according to a Politico story based on multiple first-hand accounts, Johnson’s presentation there “took on a surprisingly religious tone.”

Quoting people who were in the room, Politico reports : “Rather than outlining a specific plan to hold and grow the majority, these people said, Johnson effectively delivered a sermon.”

Portraying Johnson as just a pious Christian causes the public to overlook the way he manipulates Christianity to exert power.

“I’m not at church,” one of the people in attendance told Politico. “The approach fell flat among some in the room.”

It wasn’t just a sermon, though; portraying Johnson as just a pious Christian causes the public to overlook the way he manipulates Christianity to exert power. Johnson has taught classes miseducating Americans about church-state separation and perpetuated the myth that the United States, which has no national religion by design, is a “Christian nation.”

Two people who were in the room told Politico that Johnson “attempted to rally the group by discussing moral decline in America — focusing on declining church membership and the nation’s shrinking religious identity.” According to them, Johnson “contended that when one doesn’t have God in their life, the government or ‘state’ will become their guide, referring back to Bible verses.”

I’m sure Johnson is concerned about church membership decline. Most Christians, myself included, are concerned. But the responsibility for evangelism lies with churches, not with the speaker of the House in particular or the government in general. If increasing the number of people going to church is his priority, then Johnson ought to be leading a church, not Congress.

He seems to think more government promotion of Christianity will help reverse the trend of declining church membership. But studies show that this type of Christian nationalism will only accelerate church membership decline.

What else might Johnson have covered in his presentation?

I could think of no one better to consult than the Rev. Brian Kaylor, editor-in-chief of the Baptist magazine “Word&Way.” Kaylor wasn’t at the retreat, but he was the first to report on sermons and other presentations Johnson delivered in the years before he became House speaker.

“The presentations follow a similar script, complete with PowerPoint slides featuring quotes from U.S. founders, graphs about religious beliefs in recent years, and illustrations to depict his view of God over government,” Kaylor told me in an email:

His presentations follow the basic approach of his mentor, pseudo-historian David Barton: cherry-pick a few religious comments while ignoring the larger volume of rhetoric about church-state separation, depict the founders as Christians despite the deist beliefs of many of them, and use quotes falsely attributed to key figures (like John Quincy Adams and Alexis de Tocqueville). As Johnson bemoans society today and criticizes younger generations, he talks about the need to go back — not to the 1950s but the 1920s or earlier. He blames ‘truth decay’ on the rise of philosophical and legal pragmatism of the 1930s and 1940s. Before that, Johnson insists the U.S. was a nation that followed moral, biblical truth. Johnson’s solution is for government officials like himself to follow the Bible, even if it means ignoring laws or court decisions with which they disagree. With all of this, he says the quiet part out loud: he doesn’t want a constitutional democracy, he wants Christian Nationalism.

Despite Politico’s report that Johnson’s remarks “took on a surprisingly religious tone,” as Kaylor’s observations about his past presentations attest, Johnson adopting such a tone isn’t surprising at all. The strange part is that it didn’t go over well with his colleagues. When Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., described herself as a Christian nationalist, only two Republicans in Congress spoke out against that proclamation . And most Republicans in the United States favor declaring the U.S. a “Christian nation.” Given this political context, I’m glad there was some pushback to Johnson in the room.

MSNBC columnist Anthea Butler , in a recent AP report about Christian nationalism , calls the America-as-a-Christian-nation idea “a trope of exclusion,” which centers white Anglo-Saxon Protestants as “the ones that are willing and should be running the country both then and now.” The myth, Butler said, justifies seeing people who are not white Anglo-Saxon Protestants as “heathens.”

Johnson’s presentation at the leadership retreat in Miami came right after he received a letter from 26 House Democrats criticizing his decision to bring in far-right preacher Jack Hibbs to serve as the House’s guest chaplain.

Those Democrats write that “Pastor Hibbs is a radical Christian Nationalist who helped fuel the January 6th insurrection and has a long record of spewing hateful vitriol toward non-Christians, immigrants, and members of the LGBTQ community. He should never have been granted the right to deliver the House’s opening prayer on January 30, 2024,”

Johnson’s presentation at the leadership retreat in Miami came right after he received a letter from House Democrats criticizing his decision to bring in far-right preacher Jack Hibbs to serve as the House’s guest chaplain.

The letter says Johnson “with the tacit approval” of the House chaplain “decided to flout the Chaplaincy guidelines and use the platform of the Guest Chaplain to lend the imprimatur of Congress to an ill-qualified hate preacher who shares the Speaker’s Christian Nationalist agenda and his antipathy toward church-state separation.”

Because Johnson expresses such an interest in American history , he should reflect on something  President James Madison wrote in 1822 : “We are teaching the World the great truth, that Governments do better without Kings & Nobles than with them. The merit will be doubled by the other lesson, that Religion flourishes in greater purity, without than with the aid of Government.”

However, in private and in public, Johnson seems intent on undermining the principle of church-state separation in the U.S. Constitution and advancing an ahistorical “Christian nation” myth. It’s not going to improve his ability to run his Republican caucus. Nor will it bring more people to Christ.

If Johnson wants to share the Gospel and convert people to Christianity, he’s free to do that in the United States because of our strong religious freedom protections. And given how bad he’s been at governing as House speaker, such a ministry may be a better fit for him than politics.
