17 Humor Publishers for Authors to Pursue

  • December 30, 2020

In 2020, Santa had to take a test before delivering his presents with care. To all the good writing girls and boys, he gave them humor publishers that were in despair.

They needed submissions, you see, to tickle their reader’s funny. But amidst the coughs, sniffles, and tears, a light tried to appear. It came within memes, jokes, and satire from far and near.

So check out these literary magazines hungry for a jest. Or this list of humor book publishers , and this list too. Make sure you check each name twice. We only submit to good publishers as we try to shed some light.

17 Humor Publishers Seeking Submissions

All joking and bad rhyming aside, here are some publishers that accept humor writing. Some pay their contributors, and most (I think) don’t charge a submission fee. Not all of these publishers are currently looking for submissions.

With that said, please do your research into each publisher to make sure your work is a good fit. That means you need to read and follow their guidelines.

McSweeney’s

McSweeney’s is a household name in the literary community for many reasons. But did you know that they have a humor branch? If not, now you know! They accept nonfiction, so please do not send in short stories, poetry, and personal essays.

Their submission guidelines are very detailed, so please read them. They’re not boring like most guidelines. McSweeney’s pays its contributors an unspecified amount.

The New Yorker: Shouts & Murmurs

Next to McSweeney’s, Shouts & Murmurs is probably the next most significant market for humor authors. They have been around for a long time and accept humorous fiction only. No first-person essays will be considered for publication. They usually want things that aren’t topical.

To learn more about submitting to Shouts & Murmurs, click here .

The Morning News

The Morning News (TMN) is an online magazine of essays, art, humor, and culture published weekdays since 1999. Here’s what the editors have to say:

At TMN, we believe in good writing, tight editing, wit, curiosity, making mistakes, and solving them with tequila. We speak through what we publish.

To learn more about submitting, click here . They pay their contributors.

MAD Magazine

Here’s what the MAD Magazine editors have to say about what they want:

“We welcome all humor submissions and the best way to know what we’re looking for is to take a look at what we’re doing now! Originality and visual humor are especially prized! We’re interested in material focusing on evergreen topics, such as dating, family, school and work, plus topical material about celebrities, sports, politics, news and social trends. In addition, we will consider submissions for our Fundalini Pages and annual MAD 20 (The Dumbest People, Events and Things of the Year). We also welcome submissions for our Strip Club (artist-writers or artist-writer teams preferred).”

Click here to check out their submission guidelines.

The Funny Times

The Funny Times is a monthly magazine of humor and satire “in a world gone totally insane.” This humor publisher has been around for almost 35 years and features 100 comics and a dozen written articles in each issue. Here’s what the editor’s of The Funny Times want:

“Our print publication pokes fun at politics, news, relationships, food, technology, pets, work, death, environmental issues, business, religion (yes, even religion) and the human condition in general. Not much is off limits, so do your best to make us laugh.”

Writers can send in between five to ten cartoons or three to five stories. They pay $30 to $50 per cartoon based on reproduction size and $60 for each story. To learn more, click here .

funny times is a humor publisher

Cracked touts itself as “America’s Only Humor Site.” They publish various nonfiction articles that are related to current affairs and pop culture. They are not currently open to submissions, and if they are, they publish a blog post to let people know.

To submit your work, you must have an account with them, making their process a bit convoluted. Here’s  a link to the article  Cracked published last year so you can get a sense of what they are looking for. Articles pay between $100 and $250, based on the length and the number of pieces you’ve written, but I’ve seen differing amounts in other places.

Glossy News

Here’s what the editors have to say about Glossy News:

“If you write satire, or you’ve just always wanted to, consider submitting your story to Glossy News. Our stories are regularly picked up by HumorFeed and Google News as well as many other leading news aggregators, so if you think you’ve got the chops there’s no better time. No more must you limit yourself to enraged letters to editors or mere blog posts, now you can put your brain where your mouth is… and that’s as sexy as it sounds.”

To learn more about this, click here .

Saturday Evening Post

For nearly 200 years,  The Saturday Evening Post  has chronicled American history in the making — reflecting the distinctive characteristics and values that define the American way. The  Post  is also known for publishing such literary greats as Ray Bradbury, Agatha Christie, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Edgar Allan Poe, J.D. Salinger, and Kurt Vonnegut. It continues to seek out and discover emerging writers of the twenty-first century.

They accept nonfiction, fiction, and cartoon submissions. They do not accept any poetry outside of their limerick contest , which is accepting submission until February 25, 2021. For all other submissions, please click here to check out their guidelines. They pay their contributors between $25 and $400 per article.

Suddenly Senior

Suddenly Senior is a humor outlet for a senior audience. They post guest posts and weekly columns on their website. Here’s what they are looking for:

“We are seeking excellent guest columnists — you must write well, with humor and wit, and wisdom — to be published for Suddenly Senior’s large and attentive audience.”

Imperfect Parent

I’m going to let Imperfectly Parent explain what they are all about:

“The main focus of The Imperfect Parent is to provide a world view from a parent’s perspective. Our main criterion is that the writing either makes people think, laugh, or both. Our objective is to get parents to think about social issues, politics and parenting methods through humor or unique prospectives. Submissions should generally fit into these main categories: humor, parenting methods and choices, political and societal issues, features, book reviews, and new summaries.

Imperfect Parent’s  submission guidelines  are relatively long, so make sure you give them a thorough going-over before sending in your work. They pay their contributors.

Reader’s Digest also likes to tickle its reader’s funny bones. They accept jokes, gags, funny quotes, and true funny stories for their print edition. They also pay writers handsomely for their contributions ($25 for jokes, gags, and funny quotes, and $100 for any true funny story). You can find out more by clicking here .

I’m sure we’ve all read a listicle before, and Listverse has this down to a science. The good thing about them is that they like to publish listicles with a humorous twist. They pay their contributors $100 and have a handy author’s guide for you to follow.

Here’s what they have to say about what they want:

“The lists that our readers love the most (and the ones we will most likely pay for) are lists that are offbeat and novel—lists that are looking at something normal in an unexpected way (ways college makes you dumb, for example), unsolved mysteries, hidden knowledge (things most people don’t know), misconceptions, and just really astonishing general knowledge about anything—science, for example. What we don’t want to see are lists on sports, self-help, personal stories, or gaming. We don’t publish opinion lists.”

MAD Magazine even? They produce so much satire, I never thought they would be asking the public for submissions.

Lol. Yep. Even them. Satire technically is a type of humor. 😊 It’s just a “snootier” type of humor.

I wrote a poem pertaining to my work as a floor nurse years ago. It was a satirical stent regarding what we go yhrough on the floor. I’m tempted to send it in.

Go for it! You’ll never know unless you try! 😉

Also, I am slowly making my way through your book! Loving it so far!

Oh, thank you very much 😁! I really appreciate hearing that!

No worries! Thanks for sharing your story with me! 😊

Sharing the work, and seeing it come to life in someone’s mind, is what it’s all about 👍😁

I totally agree on that front!

Mission Accomplished!!! –and thanks for the shout out!

Over the years, I think I’ve sent pieces to four of the 17, all with rejections or silent rejections so far. I like to think Patrick McManus said it best, “No editor in his right mind would turn down a good piece of humor. But finding an editor in his right mind is the hard part.”

Never heard of the Offing and Defenestration, but they look promising. Great job finding these–and Happy New Year!

You’re welcome! 😊

Lol. Patrick McManus is no ones fool. That’s for sure!

Woohoo! Good luck! Happy New Year!

I keep trying to click your latest post, “The Unofficial 2021…”, and wordpress keeps saying ” you are not authorized to view this post.”

I wasn’t quite finished writing the post and forgot to change the scheduling around. XD Sorry about that!

Happy New Year!🎊

Happy New Year to you too!

That you have such wide range of interest from crime to hum,or etc.is really amazing. Do keep us enlightened

Thank you! I know I have followers with a wide range of interests so I try to give everyone a bit of what they want. 🙂

25 Hot Markets That Publish Humor Writing Submissions

Author: Natalie Harris-Spencer Updated: April 7, 2023

Bananas with funny eyes to show humor writing submissions

Like many writers, women, and creative humans, I like to think I’m pretty funny. When I was first looking to publish some of my satire, I scoured Submittable for markets publishing humor writing submissions and honestly, I struggled. This isn’t to say that they don’t exist; rather, Submittable showcases more literary magazines and journals because frankly, there are far more literary magazines out there that aspiring authors want to be published in! Satirical writing, like genre writing, requires a little bit of a deeper dive in order to find the best submission spots .

Unlike traditional literary magazines , humor publications tend to be online only, with many of them living out their comedic fantasies on Medium . You may want a “traditional” print pub, but online can be highly advantageous for your humor writing submissions for several reasons:

  • High traffic to these websites means you can reach a wider, potentially global audience
  • You can get a link back to your website, improving your online authority
  • Greater potential for your writing to go viral
  • Greater potential to make money, either as a paid contributor or from behind a paywall (Medium)
  • Greater potential for a book deal (hey, it’s happened to a fair few McSweeney’s and New Yorker writers)

Humor Writing Submissions: Top 25 Publications

In alphabetical order, here are 25 hot markets that publish humor writing submissions. This list is not exhaustive; it is simply an aggregation of some of the top spots to house your funny words. Some are more (a lot more) competitive than others. There are new markets accepting humor writing submissions cropping up all the time, so editors, please let me know If I am missing anything or if you would like your publication to be included:

Micro-flash humor? Sign me up. Not fewer than 250 or 500 words, but 251 exactly. They call themselves “a daily humor publication dedicated to publishing prose 251 words or shorter, and cartoons that don’t take longer than four seconds to figure out.” They publish lists, confessions, funny-sounding words, obituaries and more.

2. American Bystander

This is one of the rarer print humor magazines, and producer of 251 above. They publish humorous prose and cartoons.

3. The Belladonna

A huge following on Medium, publishes humor by women/non-binary folk.

4. Clickhole

ClickHole’s one core belief is that “all web content deserves to go viral,” and their satirical, absurdist content often does exactly that. They don’t accept unsolicited submissions, but you can apply to be on their contributor roster.

5. Defenestration

This literary journal publishes a wide range of humor writing, including satire, poetry, and unusually, short stories, while visual submissions in any medium are also accepted.

6. Feathertale

Along with its website, Feathertale, the Feathertale Review is published in print twice a year and is distributed in bookstores in the United States and Canada. They are proud publishers of high- and low-brow humor.

7. Greener Pastures Magazine

Another Medium humor website, Green Pastures Magazine is “always looking for a better joke”. They’re looking for any humor pieces between 100 and 700 words, but they don’t accept fake news.

8. The Hard Times

Billed as a very real punk news site (i.e. a bunch of fake news), you can pitch  your funny ideas in batches of 5 headlines at a time.

9. The Haven

A Medium hot-spot that describes itself as “A Place to Be Funny Without Being a Jerk.” In other words, no gross, shock, or potty humor; purist comedy is best (although snark and swearing are encouraged).

10. The Honeypot

Sexy humor on Medium. Here for it.

11. Little Old Lady Comedy

Founded in 2017, LOLC features daily humor articles from over 500 contributors. Topics vary from marriage, to food, to the writing life.

12. Listverse

Where listicles come to party. Listverse publishes offbeat, humorous lists that uncover unexpected realities.

13. The Daily Mash

Like The Onion , but British. I especially enjoy their “whatever” response to opt-in to cookies. They do not accept unsolicited submissions, but are always happy to hear from new writers.

14. McSweeney’s Internet Tendency

The OG of satire, McSweeney’s has been around since 1998 and is regarded as the ultimate coup in humor writing. “ It’s Decorative Gourd Season… ” (expletives) might just be their best article of all time. Extra bonus: the editors get back to you in just two weeks.

15. The New Yorker: Shouts & Murmurs

Next to McSweeney’s , getting published in The New Yorker ’s Shouts & Murmurs section is the holy grail of humor writing submissions. They don’t accept personal essays and prefer evergreen content. Even for such a mammoth publication, they read all submissions and respond within six months, which is nice. Best of luck!

16. The Offing: Wit Tea

Oh, witty. Get it? While The Offing is an online literary magazine, it promotes all genres and forms, hence its special humor writing section, Wit Tea.

17. Points in Case

This well-established daily humor publication has been running for nearly twenty-five years. It trends more on the literary side, with “punchy, elevated concept writing” and their response time is lightning fast: 10-14 days.

18. Reader’s Digest: Funny & Humor

This publishing behemoth not only accepts humor writing, but it notoriously pays handsomely. They’re looking for jokes, puns, riddles, and real-life funny stories. A little on the broad side of comedy, but who cares when you’re bringing home the bacon?

19. Reductress

This female-only satire magazine offers podcasts, workshops, and opens for pitches sporadically throughout the year.

20. The Rumpus: Funny Women

A paying market for women only, and a super fun website to boot. For some literary humor, I recommend “ A Literary Agent’s Manuscript Wish List ”.

21. The Satirist

Dubbed as “America’s most critical journal since 1999,” The Satirist holds a special place in my heart for publishing my first ever humor piece . The editor, Dan Geddes, is super nice. In addition to satire, they publish features, parody, “fake news”, fiction, poems, book reviews, movie reviews and essays.

22. Scary Mommy

For every mother at every stage, this non-patronizing (duh) publication publishes the light, the heavy, and everything in between.

23. Slackjaw

The largest humor site on Medium, Slackjaw is a prestigious humor site and the “#1 destination for all-things humor and think-pieces on cats”.

24. Suddenly Senior

Jokes and lolz for a more mature audience. The editors are looking for humor, wit, and wisdom.

25. Weekly Humorist

Weekly Humorist asks if you dream of being a highly paid, famous comedy writer? Living the opulent life that goes with such a lofty title? Well, this is not the publication for you. However, you get a pub cred. Score.

What do book publishers do?

Sure, a book publisher prints and sells your book. But what they do behind the scenes encompasses much more than that. Publishers handle the entire publishing process for books, including:

  • Editing the book, i.e. developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading;
  • Designing the book, i.e. book cover design and any necessary interior book design;
  • Promotion and marketing, i.e. writing the book’s blurb, email marketing , setting up media interviews, etc.; and
  • Production and distribution, i.e. formatting and distributing hardback, paperback, and ebook versions of the book to stores, both online and brick-and-mortar.

Note that the structure of publishing companies may differ, depending on their size. Bigger book publishers may be made up of publishing houses which may, in turn, be made up of imprints — each of which will have its own brand identity in terms of the type of books it publishes.

However, regardless of a publisher’s size, the scope of their work shouldn’t change. Once you sign with a publisher, they will do everything that it takes to bring your book to market.

What are the most prominent book publishing companies?

If we define success by sheer sales volume, then we might point towards the "Big 5" presses and educational publishers (who rake in a LOT of money). Over the past few decades, these giant publishing companies have merged with and acquired most of the mid-sized publishers in the industry. However, a few still remain. Here are today's biggest book publishing companies:

  • Penguin Random House (Big 5)
  • Hachette Book Group (Big 5)
  • HarperCollins (Big 5)
  • Macmillan Publishers (Big 5)
  • Simon & Schuster (Big 5)
  • Scholastic Corporation
  • Pearson Education
  • McGraw-Hill Education
  • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
  • Cengage Learning

Together, these largest publishers dominate the publishing landscape. Countless beloved books come from their imprints, many of which you’ll find in our directory.

The rest of the publishing landscape is largely made up of small publishers, or independent publishers. Most big publishers don’t directly accept unsolicited submissions without a literary agent — but smaller publishers do, making them a realistic and worthwhile route to publication.

I have a long list of publishers. What next?

Congratulations! Now take a moment to thoroughly vet every publisher on your longlist. Scams are a dime a dozen in the publishing industry, and you want to make 100% sure that you’re dealing with a legitimate publishing company. Again, we strongly recommend reading this post and Writer Beware to know what red flags to watch out for.

When you’re confident in all of the publishers on your longlist, it’s time for the most nerve-wracking step: submitting your manuscript to them.

Check out our free resources if you’re feeling daunted by what comes next. Whether you’re learning how to research publishers or how to personalize a submission, we've got you covered.

About Humor, Seriously

WALL STREET JOURNAL, LOS ANGELES TIMES, AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER • Anyone—even you!—can learn how to harness the power of humor in business (and life), based on the popular class at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.   Don’t miss the authors’ TED Talk, “Why great leaders take humor seriously,” online now. “The ultimate guide to using the magical power of funny as a tool for leadership and a force for good.”—Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times bestselling author of When and Drive We are living through a period of unprecedented uncertainty and upheaval in both our personal and professional lives. So it should come as a surprise to exactly no one that trust, human connection, and mental well-being are all on the decline.   This may seem like no laughing matter. Yet, the research shows that humor and laughter are among the most valuable tools we have at our disposal for strengthening bonds and relationships, diffusing stress and tension, boosting resilience, and performing when the stakes are high.    That’s why Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas teach the popular course Humor: Serious Business at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where they help some of the world’s most hard-driving, blazer-wearing business minds infuse more humor and levity into their work and lives. In Humor, Seriously, they draw on findings by behavioral scientists, world-class comedians, and inspiring business leaders to reveal how humor works and—more important—how you can use more of it, better. Aaker and Bagdonas unpack the theory and application of humor: what makes something funny, how to mine your life for material, and simple ways to identify and leverage your unique humor style. They show how to use humor to rebuild vital connections; appear more confident, competent, and authentic at work; and foster cultures where levity and creativity can thrive. President Dwight David Eisenhower once said, “A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done.” If Dwight David Eisenhower, the second least naturally funny president (after Franklin Pierce), thought humor was necessary to win wars, build highways, and warn against the military-industrial complex, then you might consider learning it too.

“A smart, funny, brilliant book on how to be smart about being funny, brilliantly. And I’m not just saying that because they say I am smart, funny, and brilliant in it. Buy it.” —Sarah Cooper, comedian and author of  100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings   “I’ve learned (often the hard way) that the best way to be taken seriously is to not take yourself too seriously. My teams are always at their best when approaching problems with levity, which entails both humility and optimism and always engenders trust. Plus, it’s more fun—like this book!” —Eric Schmidt, former CEO and executive chair of Google (Alphabet)   “Humor is an act of social courage that, when used correctly, has a transformative effect.  Humor, Seriously  gives us the tools we need to deploy humor expertly in any environment.” —Susan Cain, #1  New York Times  bestselling author of  Quiet   “If you think your workplace would work better if everyone laughed more, this is your playbook.” —Chip Heath, #1  New York Times  bestselling author of  The Power of Moments   “Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas make a scientific case for the importance of humor and show that it’s an incredible way to connect with customers and build culture. This book will help anyone embrace the power of laughter.” —Sara Blakley, founder and CEO of Spanx     “A sharp, incisive, and genuinely funny read that translates knowledge of the world of comedy to tools that actually work in the world of business.” —Anne Libera, director of comedy studies at The Second City   “Business is serious and the world is serious, especially right now. That means we need the ideas described in  Humor, Seriously  even more than ever. Not because levity and humor are ways to relieve the pressure of serious times, although they are, but because they unlock our humanity in the moments where we most need it.” —Tim Brown, chair of IDEO and author of  Change by Design “Eye-opening, hilarious, and absolutely original,  Humor, Seriously  will change the way you think on the job, about the world, and in your life.” —Leslie Blodgett, founder and former CEO of Bare Escentuals “Fresh, profound, and consistently entertaining. I know the words ‘evidence-based’ don’t immediately connote riotous laughter, but Aaker and Bagdonas bring some irresistibly compelling science to the art and application of humor.” —Kelly Leonard, executive vice president of The Second City   “Of all the known ways to ruin humor, the most common start with the words ‘research,’ ‘analyze,’ and ‘professor.’ The bad news is that this book features all of those words. Prominently. The good news is that against all odds, you’ll actually have fun reading it.” —Adam Grant,  New York Times bestselling author of  Originals  and  Give and Take , and host of the TED podcast  WorkLife   “In this eye-opening, important and utterly enjoyable book, Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas use science to explain how humor at work (and in life) helps alleviate stress, anxiety, and burnout. Come for the humor, stay for the insights.” —Arianna Huffington, co-founder of The Huffington Post and CEO of Thrive Global

Obituary: Mike Thaler

Prolific author-illustrator Mike Thaler, best known for his many riddle books and his humorous Black Lagoon Adventures series, died on March 23 in Yakima, Wash. He was 87.

Michael Charles Thaler was born October 8, 1936, in Los Angeles, to Ben, a businessman, poet, and sculptor, and Jean Thaler. Though he was not fond of reading when he was a child, Thaler said in an interview with Scholastic that he’d been a writer “forever. I used to love to write and draw cartoons since the third grade.” His parents, especially his mother, encouraged him to keep at it.

Thaler graduated from L.A.’s Fairfax High School in 1955 and over the next two years studied English and art at UCLA as well as at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. While at UCLA, he saw his cartoon series “The Majors” published in the university’s newspaper, The Bruin .

In 1958, at the age of 22, Thaler moved to New York City to launch a career as a cartoonist. “What I really hoped to earn a living at was doing cartoons for adults,” he told Something About the Author . He made a good start on that goal, selling pieces to Harper’s Bazaar , the Saturday Evening Post , and several other publications. But his magazine work unexpectedly opened a door to the children’s book world. “Actually, they weren’t even funny cartoons, they were the ‘save-the-world’ kind,” he said. “Then one day, Ursula Nordstrom, an editor at Harper & Row, saw a picture story I had done for Harper’s Bazaar and asked if I had ever thought of doing children’s books.” Immediately after that fateful call in 1960, Thaler set to work, writing and illustrating a story that same night and taking it to Nordstrom’s office the next day. Nordstrom bought the manuscript, Magic Boy , about a boy who juggled rainbows, and published it in 1961.

A handful of other picture books followed, as well as a classic cartoon anthology, before Thaler embarked on a bold new project: a cartoon satire magazine he called Inkling . But when his funding for the venture fell through, Thaler stepped back from cartoon work and moved to upstate New York.

During this period, one of Thaler’s friends suggested he contact the Children’s Television Workshop, which was looking for writers. He met with a director of animation for PBS’s The Electric Company and pitched an idea called “Letterman,” about a flying superhero trying to save words from being altered by evil magician the Spell Binder. Thaler landed the gig and wrote scripts for the “Adventures of Letterman” segment for two seasons.

The 1970s also marked Thaler’s return to children’s books, when he wrote several books illustrated by other artists, including How Far Will a Rubber Band Stretch? (Parents Magazine Press, 1974), which was a big success. For the next 15 years he was very prolific, publishing more than 50 books, including 38 riddle collections he also illustrated.

In 1981, Thaler’s career in kids’ books took another fortuitous shift. Jean Feiwel, then an editor at Avon Books, hired Jared Lee to illustrate Thaler’s picture book manuscript A Hippopotamus Ate the Teacher , which began a creative pairing that would last through more than 95 funny books. Thaler and Lee kicked off the Black Lagoon series of picture books for Feiwel at Scholastic with The Teacher from the Black Lagoon in 1989 and the Black Lagoon chapter book series followed, beginning in 2002. In between, they also crafted The Bully Brothers (Grosset & Dunlap, 1993; Scholastic, 1995) and Tales from the Back Pew (Zonderkidz, 2002), among other series.

In all, Thaler created more than 220 books for young readers. His most recent title was The Magic Show from the Black Lagoon (Scholastic, 2020). For the bulk of his career, Thaler did numerous school and conference visits in person and via Skype, donning his signature yellow (his favorite color) garb, often from his hat down to his shoes. “I have learned that laughter is important,” he told SATA . “And I feel it is important for children to have a good body of humor, an intelligent body of humor.”

Apart from making readers laugh, he also sought to inspire them to follow their own dreams. “Love and creativity are the two basic elements of life to me,” he said. “If you put love and creativity into everything you do, you’ve got it made. This is the philosophy I live by, and the philosophy I teach.”

Teresa Imperato, executive director, school market publishing at Scholastic, who worked closely with Thaler, offered this tribute. “I have had the privilege of working with Mike Thaler on his Black Lagoon series,” she said. “Mike’s stories have brought so much joy and laughter to children for so many decades—including to my own kids. His unique ability to connect with, and gently reassure, readers with his signature humor and wit always seemed effortless. Mike’s legacy will live on in the incredible character of Hubie, whose anxiety about school mirrors that of so many children—maybe even more so today than when the series was launched 35 years ago.”

Jean Feiwel, publisher of Feiwel and Friends and senior v-p and publishing director at Macmillan, shared this remembrance: “Mike Thaler was one of the first authors I worked with way back at Avon Books and then at Scholastic. He wrote funny books. He was a very funny man. The first book I remember publishing was There’s a Hippopotamus Under My Bed . And many, many riddle books. But the book that really launched Mike’s career was The Teacher from the Black Lagoon . This began a long and very successful series. Mike was a tireless worker and a tireless promoter long before authors were promoting directly to children. He deemed himself ‘The Riddle King,’ well before anyone was branding themselves. He was an innovator and truly an original.”
