I’ve been sober just over 23 years now, but I knew there were other people out there still in the depths of it, and there are still families seeing their loved ones suffer. Being able to make that life-changing difference for others — that’s what started me down this path.

I teach full time now. Sometimes I miss working directly with patients, but I love having a hand in shaping the next generation of counselors. The ones coming up next, we’re going to turn the field over to them, and I want to do it right. I’m passionate about this field, and handing it over is a huge responsibility. I want to make sure those who are going to be helping others feel prepared to do it.

I’m passionate about this field, and handing it over [to the next generation] is a huge responsibility. I want to make sure those who are going to be helping others feel prepared to do it. Lynda Mitton  Professor, Purdue Global

Teaching adult learners through Purdue Global is a unique experience. One of the things I love about teaching them is what they bring to the classroom — what they know. They have such a range of experiences. Some are already working in entry-level positions, and they’re able to share their experience in the discussions and seminars in the classroom. In any discipline, having some career experience is helpful because students collaborate, share their experiences in different areas and discuss how all of this comes together and benefits them, their future clients and their communities.

Plus, it means something to me personally. My dad was an adult learner, too. When he went back to school, he and my mom had to pick up our family and move across the country. He went to school full time and worked two jobs. My mom was a stay-at-home mom. Sometimes the stress was so cumulative, and you know when you get so sleep-deprived, you just can’t think right. When he was two weeks — two weeks! — from graduation, even though he was that close, he reached a point where he just said, “I can’t. I can’t finish.”

Now, my mom rarely crossed my dad. But this was the one time she did. She said, “Oh, no you don’t. You didn’t take us through all of that just to quit now.” She literally sent him to bed. She called in to school, she called in to work for him, and he slept for two days straight. Then he got up and finished strong.

Sometimes I think our students reach that point, wherever they are in their journey. And I really empathize with them. They’ve already come back to school; they’ve taken that step. But there are always next steps. I always say they do have to finish this term — quitting is not an option — but they don’t have to do it today .

I tell them the story of when I was starting my dissertation. Somebody told me if you write for 15 minutes a day, you can be done with your dissertation in a year. That changed my perspective. I didn’t think I could write a whole dissertation, but I could write for 15 minutes a day. My students might not be dissertating yet, but they might be looking at a final paper and overwhelmed by all the pages, all the references they need. I tell them not to find all the references today; find one . Then, go get yourself a cup of coffee and reward yourself. Feed your kids and do whatever else you have to do because you’re an adult student. Then come back and find one more.

Lynda Mitton

If my students can go out into the world and undo some of that stigma, we won’t just be undoing the wreckage. We can prevent addiction before it starts. Lynda Mitton Professor, Purdue Global

Don’t do it all right now. Take one piece. Do the next right thing.

“Do the next right thing” is a recovery slogan, but it absolutely applies. Concepts that we teach in recovery apply to most human experiences because a lot of it is like finishing growing up and becoming a more well-rounded person. It goes well beyond not drinking and not drugging anymore. It’s becoming a person who has coping skills and doesn’t even want to do that anymore.

My goal is to teach those coping skills and then show my students how to teach them to others.

As they launch their careers, I want my students to experience and create one thing: a world where treating mental health is the norm. In many, many parts of our society, addiction is still a very stigmatized area. But they’re somebody’s mother, daughter, son, brother. They’re people like anybody else, and their addiction isn’t the sum total of who they are. They matter.

If my students can go out into the world and undo some of that stigma, we won’t just be undoing the wreckage. We can prevent addiction before it starts.

Industrial-Organizational Psychology Graduate Program

Department of Psychological Sciences

Industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology is interested in people in the workplace and how work affects people’s lives more broadly. This knowledge of human behavior in organizations allows I-O psychologists to solve workplace problems and enhance workplace well-being, fairness and productivity. Applying psychological theories and principles, the industrial component of I-O psychology focuses on selecting and training workers, and the organizational component focuses on creating a conducive environment for workers. The field of I-O psychology is leading the way in understanding future of work and big data trends.

Ranked No. 7 in the world by U.S. News and World Report , Purdue University’s I-O psychology program is also one of the oldest, having conferred its first degree in 1939. Additionally, Purdue’s I-O psychology program has graduated more PhDs and produced more Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) fellows than any other.

Graduate students are admitted to work with a primary faculty member who will serve as their mentor. Heavily research-oriented, graduate training is based on a science-practice model, so students are trained as both researchers and applied scientists, equipped to work with organizations on human resources-related issues. Graduate students will also have opportunities to gain teaching experience in the program.

All graduate students are admitted with funding and will have guaranteed funding for five years, provided they are making strong progress toward their PhD. An admitted student will typically work as a graduate teaching assistant for 20 hours per week during the academic year and receive a nine-month stipend and tuition waiver. Students may also receive funding during summers if they obtain a teaching assistant position or if they are employed as a research assistant.

Program Highlights

  • You will work with a faculty mentor with related research interests. As you grow in knowledge and expertise, you are encouraged to collaborate with different faculty to develop your own unique research stream.
  • Faculty and graduate students frequently collaborate with faculty in the social, cognitive and clinical psychology areas as well as faculty in the Krannert School of Management.
  • Because we value social responsibility, the I-O psychology program at Purdue is the first to become a UN Global Compact participant, by which we place an emphasis within our courses and program activities on organizations’ responsibilities to human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.
  • While there is significant overlap with organizational behavior and human resources, the I-O psychology program emphasizes the scientific study of work, workers and the workplace, focusing on outcomes experienced by the employees rather than exclusively organizational outcomes.
  • As a graduate student in the I-O psychology program, you’ll be considered a member of the Purdue Association of Graduate Students in Industrial Psychology (PAGSIP) . This organization provides opportunities for you to meet informally with other I-O psychology students to discuss research ideas and problems as well as to connect with program alumni.
  • The Purdue I-O area is partnering with Instats to connect with some of the best methodologists in the world.

Plan of Study

Each graduate student admitted to a degree program must file an individualized plan of study to guide their academic progress. The plan of study is an academic contract between the student, advisory committee members and the Graduate School. Students filing their plan of study should complete their plan electronically via the Plan of Study Generator on MyPurdue. More information about creating a plan of study can be found in the Department of Psychological Sciences’ graduate handbook.

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in faculty research and eventually formulate and direct their own individual research projects. Faculty in the I-O psychology graduate program have a wide range of research interests, many of which center around the psychological experiences of people at work.

Bridge Topics

Within the industrial-organizational psychology program, faculty also have research interests in several bridge topics, including diversity and inclusion, individual differences, maladaptive behavior, perception and performance, and social relationships. I-O psychology faculty studying diversity and inclusion focus on diversity in hiring, cultural synergy in multicultural spaces and work attitudes. Individual differences research examines achievement, conflict management and predictors of workplace outcomes. Maladaptive behavior research in the I-O psychology program is centered around bias and conflict escalation. Program faculty who study perception and performance investigate person-environment fit. Finally, I-O psychology faculty studying social relationships seek to improve workplace well-being and interpersonal relationships.

Highlights of Purdue Global’s Winter 2024 Commencement

pgcommence-dooleygrad

Grads, alumni, faculty from Arizona, Florida, Indiana and Texas play key parts in events

Purdue Global recently hosted three ceremonies and events for graduates and their families. Learn how grads, alumni and faculty came together for a memorable weekend.

Purdue Global celebrates the accomplishments of nearly 1,200 graduates at commencement ceremonies

Purdue Global hosted three commencement ceremonies at the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas . Nearly 1,200 graduates — 679 in person and 514 virtually — participated in ceremonies. The graduates represented 49 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands and include 44 Indiana residents and 247 residents from Texas.

Grit, determination and hope guide Purdue Global alum

Walda Collins, a Purdue Global alumna from San Antonio , served as the keynote speaker. Collins is a chef, author, Marine Corps veteran, life coach and pastor. “Some of you wanted to give up and throw in the towel, but life threw it right back at you and said, ‘You’re too close to give up now,’” Collins said. “Some of you wanted to quit, but the warrior in you wouldn’t allow you to.”

Central Indiana couple perform national anthem together at Purdue Global graduation

Deaon and Alina Smith combined their passion for music and Purdue Global by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” during Purdue Global’s winter commencement ceremony. The Smiths, from Indianapolis , are active in the city’s music scene. Alina received her Bachelor of Science in nursing at the Feb. 17 ceremony; Deaon is working on his Master of Science in psychology with a concentration in addiction counseling.

‘Last Lecture’ speaker relishes opportunity to share experiences with grads, inspiring them to follow their own path

Like many college graduates, Tuwana Evans’ own journey was not a straight path — an emphasis of her “Last Lecture” given to those in attendance during Purdue Global’s commencement week. Graduating students nominated Evans to deliver the talk, which happened Feb. 13. Evans, originally from Gary, Indiana , and a Purdue University alum, is now a Purdue Global faculty member who lives in Arizona .

Confident, problem-solving Purdue Global grad blazes her own trail

When Samantha LaRue sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” for her high school graduation, she stood on the same Louisiana stage that hosted performances by her two musical idols, Patsy Cline and Elvis Presley. Fast-forward nine years, LaRue found herself on another stage singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” — this time in Irving, Texas , for Purdue Global’s Feb. 17 commencement ceremony. Not only was LaRue a national anthem singer, but she also earned her Bachelor of Science in industrial/organizational psychology.

Four sisters celebrate graduation together

Purdue Global commencements are known for being family events. Meet Rosio Garcia, Kathy Claros, Shirley Adan and Nancy Claros — four sisters who are registered nurses from Naples, Florida , who all earned their master’s degrees. Find out more about how they completed their classes and then crossed the stage together.

Note to journalists: This wrap-up includes stories about recent grads, alumni and faculty from Arizona, Florida, Indiana and Texas who participated in Purdue Global’s commencement.

Purdue University’s Industrial and Organizational (I-O) psychology Ph.D. program is heavily research-oriented. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in faculty research and eventually formulate and direct their own individual research projects. Teaching experience is also provided for most students during their graduate program.

Most students enter the Ph.D. program with a bachelor's degree, although some enter with a master's degree. Graduate students are admitted to work with one of the primary I-O faculty members who serves as their major professor.

Graduate training is based on a science-practice model, where students are trained both as researchers as well as applied scientists equipped to work with organizations on human resource issues.

The current faculty have a wide range of research interests, many of which center around the psychological experiences of people at work. More information about the Ph.D. program can be found on the right.

About Purdue University

purdue global psychology faculty

Alt text: Photos of Purdue University campus, featuring the Active Learning Center (top), and Purdue bell tower (bottom).

Purdue is a Big Ten research university. The campus is vibrant and intellectually diverse. There are nearly 40,000 students enrolled at Purdue University with a large number of international students. The Purdue international student population was recently ranked 2nd in public institutions with over 8,000 international students.

Purdue is located in West Lafayette, Indiana, a safe city with a low cost of living. This is beneficial to graduate students who will be able to save money during graduate school. The campus is within walking distance of the Wabash riverfront area, which joins West Lafayette and Lafayette and is the location of many outside festivals. The Lafayette-West Lafayette area offers a number of restaurants, bars, shopping, and cultural activities, and has a combined population of nearly 100,000 residents. For more on the area, see http://www.homeofpurdue.com/ .

West Lafayette is located about one hour from Indianapolis and about two hours from Chicago. The closest international airports are the Indianapolis International Airport and O'Hare International Airport (in Chicago).

UN Global Compact

UN Global Compact.

The Purdue I-O Psychology program is proud to have worked with the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) United Nations Committee to become the first I-O program to become a UN Global Compact participant (and to include our materials in SIOP’s Global Compact Application Toolkit ).

We have pledged to give emphasis in our courses and other program activities to topics and issues relevant to the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact , which center around organizations’ responsibilities relevant to human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.

To learn more about the ways in which we embed socially responsible principles into all aspects of our program, our bi-annual Communications on Engagement is provided on the right.

Strong Attendance by Horse Owners Shows Enduring Popularity of Annual Equine Wellness Forum

Make a gift support the college.

Attendees watch a saddle-fitting demonstration during the 2024 Equine Wellness Forum

Equine enthusiasts demonstrated the value of continuing education about equine wellness by turning out in force for the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s 2024 Equine Wellness Forum at Lynn Hall.  The all-day program Saturday, February 10, attracted 155 attendees from across Indiana and five other states.

Another popular demonstration topic was trailer safety.

The forum is designed to inform horse owners and equine industry professionals about horse health issues ranging from basic preventative healthcare to the latest medical advancements. In addition to talks on a variety of topics, the program also featured three live demonstrations that included the college’s high-speed equine treadmill and sessions on saddle fitting and trailer safety.

The program attracted attendees of all ages, including about a dozen high school students.  Presentations were given by equine specialists on the college’s faculty as well as several outside speakers.  The forum began with a welcome and introductory remarks by the head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Dr. Catherine Scott-Moncrieff.  The program was moderated by Dr. Tim Lescun, professor of large animal surgery.

Equine enthusiasts were fascinated by the demonstration of the high speed equine treadmill at the Donald J. McCrosky Equine Sports Medicine Center.

Other speakers and their topics included:

  • Dr. Kelsey Dawson, a sports psychologist for Purdue Counseling & Sports Psychology Services, who spoke about the basics of sports performance skills, such as breathing techniques and meditation. Attendees also had the opportunity to engage in activities allowing them to practice the learned skill.
  • Dr. Janice Kritchevsky, professor of large animal internal medicine, gave a presentation on the topic, “What’s new with old horses,” which provided guidance on how to best care for a senior horse. Diseases that are common in aged horses such as equine asthma, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction, and chronic lameness also were discussed.
  • Dr. Erin Wilson, (PU DVM 2008), a nutrition consultant for Cargill Animal Nutrition and a Purdue alumna, spoke on the topic of the nutritional management of senior horses, beginning with senior horse identification and demographics.  Special nutritional and management considerations of senior horses were discussed, including dental issues, impaired nutrient absorption, environmental and herd stress, and common concurrent diseases.
  • Dr. Michelle Tucker, assistant professor of large animal surgery, discussed the most common communicable diseases of show horses, and how to prevent them. Her presentation included background about the pathogens, how they are transmitted, and general disease-specific strategies to prevent bringing any infectious diseases home from shows or events where horses are mixing.
  • Dr. Sara Waxman, a clinical assistant professor who works with the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital ’s Equine Field Service, explained Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue, describing when it is used and basic techniques for moving and lifting horses.

Dr. Catharine Scott-Moncrieff, head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, welcomed attendees at the start of the Equine Wellness Forum Saturday, February 10.

Five Purdue veterinary students in the college’s Equine Club assisted with the demonstrations and gave tours of the David and Bonnie Brunner Equine Hospital at the end the day.  The forum attracted horse enthusiasts with a variety of interests and backgrounds, including racing, jumping, showmanship, dressage, Western, English, and trail riding.  Also represented among the attendees were mounted police.
