Cover letters and cover sheets are both ways to introduce yourself, your organization or your business to others. Both cover letters and cover sheets can accompany many types of correspondence. Cover letters are particularly important when submitting your resume for employment. A cover sheet is a less formal version of cover letter, containing only the essential information required to make an introduction.

Cover letters are sent with resumes as an introductory letter. A cover letter allows you to personalize what might otherwise be impersonal material. Cover letters are typically two to three paragraphs long. They should include a salutation, your letter's purpose and a summary of your qualifications or experience. The purpose statement of your letter should include where you found the job announcement, the specific position to which you are applying and a few remarks on why you are personally interested in the position. When writing about your qualifications be certain to note how your experience specifically matches the job requirements being sought.

Other Cover Letters

Cover letters can also be sent with business materials such as reports, grant proposals and marketing packages. Business cover letters should include a salutation, the letter's purpose and a request for a response or statement of next steps. For example, if you are submitting a grant proposal to a funder, your letter's purpose would include specific funding request amount, how the funding will meet an urgent need for your organization and a statement about your organization's effectiveness in reaching its mission.

Cover Sheets

Cover sheets are a less personal version of a cover letter. They include only basic information such as your contact information and the purpose of the correspondence in a brief sentence or two. When submitting a cover sheet with a resume you may also include the title of the position to which you are applying and your availability. However, whenever possible include a more personal cover letter with your resume. Businesses use cover sheets to send faxes and when sending other correspondence for which a more thorough introduction is not necessary.

What you include in your cover page depends slightly on which citation style you are using, but the rules are generally the same.

A title or cover page is exactly what you’d imagine—it’s the very front page of your academic essay or paper, which includes important information about your work. The function of a title or cover page is that it allows the reader to identify your work at a glance, but it can also help your assignments to look neater and more professionally put-together. Additionally, it provides a handy buffer against any finger smudges and will protect your work from whatever might be lurking at the bottom of your school bag!

Title or cover pages are common in work that’s formatted using the APA style rules, although you may also need to include them when following other popular formatting styles such as MLA or Chicago. If you’re unsure as to whether you need to create a title page, check with your teacher, tutor, or college advisor.

Failing to include a title page if required could give a negative first impression to whoever is reading your work. It could even cause you to lose marks for presentation, so don’t be tempted to skip this simple formatting task that should only take a few minutes to complete.

How to Make an APA Title Page

If you’ve been instructed to use APA style formatting then it’s likely that your tutor is expecting to see a title page including the following information:

  • Title of the paper
  • Author name
  • Author institution i.e. the name of your school, college or university
  • Running head i.e. an abridged title that features at the top left of every page

For example:

  • Title : Does The Internet Encourage Individualization?
  • Author : Roxanne Wells
  • Institution : The University of Derby
  • Running Head : Internet And Individualization

The above information should be centered (with the exception of the running head) and double-spaced, in Times New Roman font, size 12. See an APA example below:

How to Make an MLA Title Page

Title or cover pages are less common when following the MLA style of formatting. Instead, your tutor might prefer you to include a header with the required information at the top left of the first page of your assignment. These usually look like this:

  • Tutor/Professor name
  • Course name and number
  • Due date of the paper
  • Author: Roxanne Wells
  • Tutor/Professor Name: Professor Dale
  • Course: Sociology 100
  • Due Date: 1 May 2018

The above header should sit under a one-inch top margin, to the left of the page. It should be double-spaced and in a legible font (Times New Roman is a safe choice), size 12. The title of your essay should follow, centered, with the body of your work commencing underneath. In addition, every page should have a right-aligned header with the author’s last name and the page number.

If you do need to make up a cover page, however, you would set out the above information, plus the title/subtitle of your assignment and the name of your institution, centered and presented over a full page.

Often discussed and much disagreement – the roof sheet of an application! For some it is an indispensable page in the application , for others totally unnecessary and superfluous. But what is right now? Should I now add a Cover page add a cover sheet to my application documents or leave it out?

Good to know: The cover sheet is optional, meaning it is optional. There are many different ways to design your cover page. You are also free to design the cover page as a kind of teaser and write the contact details and logo on the cover page.

Information that must be on the cover sheet of the application

In general, however, there are a few pieces of information that should always be included on the cover page of an application. These are:

The heading

The headline should be be short and meaningful. For example, you can simply and concisely write “Application” or “Application documents” . Either the headline is at the top of the cover page or is visually emphasized in the layout, for example by a colored, large font.

Position sought

You can keep this option open. Stating the position you are seeking is not mandatory, but it can be useful to the reader, giving you an advantage. If the reference number is given in the job advertisement, you can also indicate this here and for which branch or location you are applying.

Directly below you can also write the company name. This makes it clear that this is a targeted application and not a mass application.

Contact details

As always: first and last name, your address, phone number, email address, website, LinkedIn or Xing profile.

Application photo

An application photo has long since ceased to be a requirement. However, should you be considering a cover page, it makes a lot of sense to add a photo of yourself as a design element. It’s important that your photo and the cover design – the format – the colors and the design match.

This is where you list everything that goes into your application materials. Curriculum vitae, attachments certificates. But be careful: Even with a cover page, the cover letter is always at the top of the application. You do not include the cover letter in the table of contents. The cover page can be useful in an application, but it also has disadvantages.

Advantages & disadvantages of a cover sheet

The personnel managers receive countless applications every day. If you design a good cover page that matches the rest of your application, there’s a very good chance you’ll stand out from the rest.

The cover page immediately tells the reader what position you are applying for and gives him/her a quick overview of who is applying and what to expect from the application. This can be a big plus in your application even later when you are selected. The application looks more structured and thus also appears more well thought out.

By placing your application photo on the cover page, your resume gains some space and you can focus on a good layout there.

Too much of a good thing

The cover page can seem superfluous in a well-structured and clear application. Therefore, some employers evaluate the cover sheet as unnecessary.

First impressions count. And you can certainly score points with a good cover sheet, too. But: You also distract a bit from the content of your application.

File size (online)

Applying by mail is quite normal today and is even preferred. A cover page then provides an additional page, which increases the file size. Your file should not be larger than 2MB. be.

Cover sheet order in the application

As the name “cover page” suggests, the cover page is the first page of your application. The same is true if you apply online or by email. But you should never forget that the cover letter is always the first page of your application.

Because the cover letter is the gold piece of your application. In the cover letter you explain your interest in the company and the position, introduce your personality and go into detail about your skills. That’s why the cover letter is MUCH more important than a cover page. . That’s why the cover letter, whether print or online, ALWAYS comes first.

As I said before, the cover page is a nice-to-have, but first and foremost comes your cover letter. Then comes your resume , then your references and finally, internships, work samples, references and certificates.

Essentials of a cover page

A cover page requires:

  • A running head
  • The title of your academic paper
  • The name of your university
  • The name of the author or authors

Besides these requirements, your professor may ask you to add extra information . As mentioned earlier, you should refer to the latest guidelines to see how the cover should be formatted. With APA style, you have to use 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spacing, and 1-inch margins.

The running head has to be left-aligned, and it should be capitalized. Besides the ‘running head,’ your header should have a maximum of 50 characters.

The title of your paper should also be properly formatted. It should be in the title case, meaning the first letters of every word is capitalized. The only words that should not be capitalized are small words like articles and prepositions . The title should be no more than 12 words in length. For the title, you should use whole words only. Avoid contractions and abbreviations.

The names of the authors should also be properly formatted. If multiple authors were involved in writing the paper, they should all be mentioned, along with the institutions they are affiliated with. Students with different affiliations should be listed separately.

The cover page should not be spruced up unnecessarily. Its only objective is to provide the reader or professor with essential information. Don’t use colored paper, colored text, or fancy images to make it look more attractive. That will only make you appear less professional.

APA recommends that your title should be 12 words in length or less, and it should not include any abbreviations or contractions. Words that serve no purpose should also be left out. The title can take up one or two lines.

The information for an APA format cover is below the title of your paper, then the names of the authors and their institutional affiliations are listed. The author’s name should include first name, middle initial(s), and last name. The titles of the author(s) and their educational qualifications should not be included in this part of the paper. The institutional affiliation is included under the author’s name, and it shows where the researcher carried out the research.

MLA cover page

When using an MLA format cover page, it is not required. Your instructor will let you know whether they require a cover. For some assignments, a cover can make your paper look more professional, so you should always consider adding one. For MLA, you will have to include:

  • School or university name
  • Title of your paper
  • Name of the class
  • Name of your professor
  • Date of submission

Note: Different instructors may have different style requirements. You may need to add other details to the cover page.

Like in APA, the format cover page is double-spaced and the letters are centered on the page. The name of your university should be typed first, after which you can skip down to a third of the page and add the title of the research paper. From here, you can skip several lines and add the rest of the details. These details should be on the bottom half of the page.

Chicago style cover page

Usually, the Chicago style does not require a cover. However, they may be requested for individual assignments. In this case, the Chicago cover page includes the title of your page, the name of the author, the name of your teacher, the course title, and the due date. The title should be typed at about one-third of the way down the page. Some professors accept covers using 11 pt. Arial font, but the most widely used font is 12 pt. Times New Roman. You should generally avoid using fancy fonts or underlining the text. You can only use bold for the title and subtitle. The page should be double-spaced. The page number should not be included in a Chicago style cover page.

Creating a student cover page involves considering the essential elements that offer a concise overview of the work, while also adhering to any style or formatting guidelines in place. Here’s a general outline of what should be included.

  • Title of the document/paper Ideally placed at the center of the page Should be specific and concise, capturing the essence of the paper
  • Student’s name Usually positioned under the title Full name is recommended unless specified otherwise
  • Course name and code Essential for academic submissions to ensure the paper reaches the correct instructor or department

  • Date of submission Can be written in different formats (e.g., September 21, 2023, or 21-09-2023) depending on institutional or style guide preferences

Formatting tips

Use a readable font like Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri. Typically, a 12 pt. font size is recommended. Details on the cover are usually double-spaced for clarity. Ensure you have standard margins (typically 1 inch, so 2.54 cm, on all sides) unless specified otherwise by your institution or style guide. Most of the details are typically centered on the page, but some style guides might have different requirements. Always refer to specific institutional guidelines or the requested style guide (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago) as they may have distinct stipulations for page composition.

How do you write a title page for an essay?

The title page of your academic essay should be simple and straightforward, and it should only consist of text. For the cover page design, you should consult the latest manual of your institution. You may be required to use a certain style of formatting, such as APA, or MLA. The requirements for an APA title page differ from the requirements of an MLA title page .

Does the title page count as one page?

The title page will take up a whole page of your essay. However, it does not count as one page in terms of the page count for your essay . The table of contents and bibliography are also not included in the word/page count of your essay.

How do you format the names of multiple authors?

Ok, let’s take a closer sheet at the purpose and design of the cover sheet, a prewriting technique used to analyze your audience, your purpose and your direction.

First of all, the  Cover Sheet  is broken into three sections:  Reader/Audience ; Writer/Sender  and  Content/Design.

The  Reader/Audience  section has to look at your topic from your reader’s perspective. When it says “ Prior knowledge of subject,”  that means what is the reader’s knowledge of your topic before he/she begins to read your document? You have to know this because it will help you develop your paper. You will know what material is necessary and what material is obvious, unnecessary.

For instance, with the  Letter of Inquiry,  you’re writing to a company about its product. Obviously, the company is very familiar with the product, so you don’t need to give lots of background information. If you were from the company and writing to potential customers, then you would have to use lots more background because the reader’s knowledge is not that good.

You need to know the reader’s  attitude,  both toward the subject and toward you. Again, it’s sometimes obvious that the reader doesn’t know you as a person, but he/she knows you as the writer of this document. What is he thinking about you before he even starts to read? Analyze that. Put yourself in your reader’s shoes. Know how he/she is going to respond.

So everything between  Reader/Audience  and  Writer/Sender  is reader-oriented. The  Writer/Sender  section simply helps you recognize what you’re doing and why, gives your own position importance. The  Content/Design  section helps you think about how you might want to display your information. Remember, we’re not writing the same kind of document each time. Each one requires different kinds of design techniques.

The lines above the  Reader/Audience  section are for to identify yourself. Organization: means which organization are you writing from? Is it personal, or is it one of the two organizations you described in your opening assignment?

Also, keep your design of this document in mind. How does it look, visually?  Boldface  heading, indent subheadings. Make it look professional. Although, I don’t grade the  Cover Sheet,  it can influence your overall grade for an assignment (I take one point off if it’s not handed in). What is the difference between standard and deep pocket.

One of our biggest customer questions is the difference between standard and deep pockets of our fitted Wicked Sheets. Across the board, mattresses do not have a standard depth that defines them. Sometimes a mattress’s pillow-top isn’t included in the manufacturer’s dimensions, or they categorize their thicker mattresses as ‘XL.’ Make sure if you’ve added a foam topper, egg crate, etc., to your bed, you include it in the overall dimensions.

Regardless of what your mattress says, make sure to measure your mattress from top to bottom and choose accordingly.

At Wicked Sheets, we offer two options to fit almost all mattresses.

Standard : 8” to 11” deep

Deep : 12” to 18” deep

Ordering the correct depth is essential to keeping your fitted sheet on the bed and maximizing the wicking and cooling properties of your Wicked Sheets. If your mattress is smaller than 11” deep, select ‘Standard’ in the Pocket Depth section of the order page. If your mattress is greater than 12” deep, however, select ‘Deep’ on the order page.

Former President Donald Trump needs to arrange a $454 million bond to comply with a New York court ruling in less than a week, but the presumptive Republican presidential nominee says he can't find a company to put up the bond.

Trump's lawyers are asking an appeals court to stay the judgment, but the clock is ticking.

But New York Attorney General Letitia James has been clear: If Trump doesn't pay, she will move to seize his assets.

"If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court," she said. "And we will ask the judge to seize his assets."

Trump's noncash assets run to $3 billion, Forbes estimates, so there's plenty of value there. The law limits the AG to seizing properties that were a part of the case, but there's about two dozen of those, everything from the Doral Golf Club to 40 Wall Street to Trump Tower. She's not limited to New York properties, though there are extra steps if she chooses to go out of state.

She could, in theory, send a sheriff or a marshal to enforce the judgment, and that brings on another legal process with many more opportunities for delay.

James can begin enforcement of the judgment immediately after the 30-day grace period expires next week, says Pollock. And there are several devices she can use to try to get him to pay.

For one, he says, she could serve Trump a restraining notice that would restrict his spending in other areas until he pays his bond.

"The restraining notice would say: 'Don't spend money, don't fill up your jet at the pump, until you pay the state of New York, or you'll be held in contempt of court,' " Pollock says. "And my impression is that ... Engoran, the judge here in New York, would be quick to hold him in contempt of court."

He says it's theoretically possible that James' could consider settling, especially if Trump were to write a check for something like $250 million. But short of that, he doesn't see any reason for her to proactively lower his bond, especially since she has the tools to go into banks and drain his accounts.

"The entire trial was effectively a roadmap to his financial assets," Pollock adds. "She can now send out a sheriff or a marshal of the city of New York to go walk into a financial institution holding what's known as an execution and empty his bank account short of $3,000, which is the statutory floor."

Pollock acknowledges that Trump has said he doesn't have $450 million in cash. But if he wants to stave off enforcement, "he needs to find a way to raise it."

Global climate change is not a future problem. Changes to Earth’s climate driven by increased human emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases are already having widespread effects on the environment: glaciers and ice sheets are shrinking, river and lake ice is breaking up earlier, plant and animal geographic ranges are shifting, and plants and trees are blooming sooner.

Effects that scientists had long predicted would result from global climate change are now occurring, such as sea ice loss, accelerated sea level rise, and longer, more intense heat waves.

The magnitude and rate of climate change and associated risks depend strongly on near-term mitigation and adaptation actions, and projected adverse impacts and related losses and damages escalate with every increment of global warming.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Some changes (such as droughts, wildfires, and extreme rainfall) are happening faster than scientists previously assessed. In fact, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) — the United Nations body established to assess the science related to climate change — modern humans have never before seen the observed changes in our global climate, and some of these changes are irreversible over the next hundreds to thousands of years.

Scientists have high confidence that global temperatures will continue to rise for many decades, mainly due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities.

The IPCC’s Sixth Assessment report, published in 2021, found that human emissions of heat-trapping gases have already warmed the climate by nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) since 1850-1900. 1 The global average temperature is expected to reach or exceed 1.5 degrees C (about 3 degrees F) within the next few decades. These changes will affect all regions of Earth.

The severity of effects caused by climate change will depend on the path of future human activities. More greenhouse gas emissions will lead to more climate extremes and widespread damaging effects across our planet. However, those future effects depend on the total amount of carbon dioxide we emit. So, if we can reduce emissions, we may avoid some of the worst effects.

The scientific evidence is unequivocal: climate change is a threat to human wellbeing and the health of the planet. Any further delay in concerted global action will miss the brief, rapidly closing window to secure a liveable future.

Here are some of the expected effects of global climate change on the United States, according to the Third and Fourth National Climate Assessment Reports:

Global sea level has risen about 8 inches (0.2 meters) since reliable record-keeping began in 1880. Sea ice cover in the Arctic Ocean is expected to continue decreasing, and the Arctic Ocean will very likely become essentially ice-free in late summer if current projections hold. This change is expected to occur before mid-century.

U.S. Regional Effects

Climate change is bringing different types of challenges to each region of the country. Some of the current and future impacts are summarized below. These findings are from the Third 3 and Fourth 4 National Climate Assessment Reports, released by the U.S. Global Change Research Program .

  • Northeast. Heat waves, heavy downpours, and sea level rise pose increasing challenges to many aspects of life in the Northeast. Infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, and ecosystems will be increasingly compromised. Farmers can explore new crop options, but these adaptations are not cost- or risk-free. Moreover, adaptive capacity , which varies throughout the region, could be overwhelmed by a changing climate. Many states and cities are beginning to incorporate climate change into their planning.
  • Northwest. Changes in the timing of peak flows in rivers and streams are reducing water supplies and worsening competing demands for water. Sea level rise, erosion, flooding, risks to infrastructure, and increasing ocean acidity pose major threats. Increasing wildfire incidence and severity, heat waves, insect outbreaks, and tree diseases are causing widespread forest die-off.
  • Southeast. Sea level rise poses widespread and continuing threats to the region’s economy and environment. Extreme heat will affect health, energy, agriculture, and more. Decreased water availability will have economic and environmental impacts.
  • Midwest. Extreme heat, heavy downpours, and flooding will affect infrastructure, health, agriculture, forestry, transportation, air and water quality, and more. Climate change will also worsen a range of risks to the Great Lakes.
  • Southwest. Climate change has caused increased heat, drought, and insect outbreaks. In turn, these changes have made wildfires more numerous and severe. The warming climate has also caused a decline in water supplies, reduced agricultural yields, and triggered heat-related health impacts in cities. In coastal areas, flooding and erosion are additional concerns.

B eyoncé's eighth studio album Cowboy Carter , the second act of her three-part project, released at midnight on Friday. One of the most striking songs of its 27 tracks is a soulful cover of the Beatles' "Blackbird," which features a quartet of Black country singers: Tanner Adell, Tiera Kennedy, Brittney Spencer and Reyna Roberts.

The inclusion of "Blackbird" (styled as "Blackbiird" on Cowboy Carter , in keeping with the act ii theme) may come as a surprise to some; for one, in recent years, Beyoncé has rarely done covers of other artists' songs. For another, though Beyoncé has been clear that her new album "ain't a country album, this is a Beyoncé album," many of the songs on the album are firmly in the country space, making her inclusion of the decidedly folk rock classic "Blackbird" especially significant.

"Blackbird," which was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon and included on their 1968 self-titled album, is a song about hope and survival, with lyrics that encourage the titular bird to "take these broken wings and learn to fly." However, throughout the years, McCartney has been vocal about the song being inspired by the American civil rights movement and specifically the Little Rock Nine , the trailblazing nine Black students in 1957 who faced immense discrimination after they enrolled in a formerly all-white high school following the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education ruling.

Elizabeth Eckford ignores the screams and stares of fellow students on her first day of school, Sept. 6, 1957. Eckford was one of nine African American students whose integration into Little Rock's Central High School was ordered by a Federal Court following legal action by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

In a 2019 interview with GQ , McCartney detailed how this struggle for racial justice inspired him and Lennon across the pond.

"I was sitting around with my acoustic guitar and I'd heard about the civil rights troubles that were happening in the '60s in Alabama, Mississippi, and Little Rock in particular. So that was in my mind and I just thought, 'It'd be really good if I could write something that if it ever reached any of the people going through those problems, it might kind of give them a little bit of hope,' so I wrote 'Blackbird.'

He also shared that he wrote the song specifically with Black women in the civil rights movement in mind, which makes Beyoncé's decision to cover it with all Black female country artists especially significant.

"In England, a bird is a girl, so I was thinking of a Black girl going through this—you know, now's your time to arise, set yourself free, and take these broken wings. One of the nice things about music is that you know a lot of people listening to you are going to take seriously what you're saying in the song. So I'm very proud of the fact that the Beatles output is always really pretty positive," he said.

In 2016, nearly 60 years after "Blackbird" made its debut, McCartney met two members of the Little Rock Nine, Thelma Mothershed Wair and Elizabeth Eckford, after performing a concert in North Little Rock, AR.

"It's a really important place for us because this is, to me, where civil rights started," McCartney said during the concert . "We would see what was going on and sympathize with the people going through those struggles, and it made me want to write a song that if it ever got back to the people going through those struggles, it might just help them a little."

The song has been covered extensively over the years, by everyone from the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl to Sarah McLachlan. Now, Beyoncé's version featuring Adell, Kennedy, Spencer, and Roberts serves as a reminder of the Black women at the forefront of the racial justice movement. It also draws a parallel between the ways in which Black artists and particularly Black women artists still have to fight for space in the industry, especially in the country genre, which has historically been less than welcoming to non-white and women artists .
