Republic Day 2024 Speech in English: 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

The annual celebration of Republic Day, which falls on January 26th, is a major celebration in India. It marks the day when our nation adopted its Constitution, a significant milestone in our history.

The journey towards the adoption of the Constitution began soon after India gained independence on August 15, 1947. A committee was established, and on August 29, 1947, a Constituent Assembly was convened with the task of writing a new Constitution for the country. B.R. Ambedkar was appointed as the leader of this group, and over the course of two years, 11 months, and 18 days, the Constitution was drafted.

On January 26, 1950, the Constitution was officially proclaimed. This day holds a special significance as it is also the day when the proclamation of Poorna Swaraj was made in 1930 and Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as the leader of the Indian National Congress.

While Independence Day is celebrated on August 15, the Indian National Congress had already celebrated it on the same day in 1930, before India officially gained independence in 1947. Therefore, August 15th is observed as Independence Day, and January 26th is celebrated as Republic Day.

During Republic Day celebrations, patriotism and love for our nation are at the forefront. The main celebration takes place in the capital, New Delhi, with a grand parade and the President of India hoisting the national flag and giving a speech. People across the country participate in cultural programs and patriotic events to celebrate this day.

As we celebrate the 73rd Republic Day of our great nation, let us remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, the contributions of the Constitution-makers, and pledge to uphold the values and principles of our Constitution.

Republic Day, celebrated annually on January 26th, is a day of great national pride and celebration in India. It marks the day when our nation officially adopted a democratic republic government and declared its independence. On January 26, 1950, India became an independent, secular, socialist, and democratic republic, almost three years after gaining independence from British rule.

The origins of Republic Day can be traced back to August 15, 1947, when India gained independence from British rule. However, at that time, the nation did not have a formal constitution in place to govern the country properly. To address this, a constitutional drafting committee was established on August 28, 1947, with B.R. Ambedkar as its head. The committee, after 166 days of extensive deliberation, presented its final proposal to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947.

One of the main objectives of the drafting committee was to ensure universal protections for all citizens, regardless of their faith, culture, caste, sex, or creed. The Constitution, which was finally adopted on January 26th, 1950, struck a delicate balance between the various interests and aspirations of the people.

On this day, Rajendra Prasad was inaugurated as India's first President, and the first session of the Indian Parliament was held. Republic Day not only marks the end of British rule but also the establishment of the Indian Republic.

Celebrations

The celebrations on Republic Day are a true reflection of the unity and diversity of our nation. The main event takes place in the capital city of New Delhi, with a grand parade showcasing the military might of the country and the richness of our cultural heritage. The President of India hoists the national flag, and the military responds with a 21-gun salute and a performance of the national anthem.

Many schools across the country also participate in these celebrations by organizing marches and cultural programs, which serve as a source of inspiration and pride for the citizens. It's a day when people put aside their differences and come together to celebrate the spirit of unity and nationalism. The participation of both young and adults in these celebrations, from the colourful parades to the patriotic performances, is truly inspiring and makes one feel proud to be a citizen of this great nation. On this Republic Day, let us pledge to uphold the values and principles of our Constitution, and work towards building a stronger and more inclusive nation for all.

How Students Can Contribute

As a student of this nation, there are several ways to uphold the values and principles of Republic Day:

Learn about the history and significance of the day: Understand the importance of the adoption of the Constitution and the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters.

Participate in patriotic events: Join parades, cultural programs, and other events organized by your school or community to celebrate the day.

Show respect to the national flag and anthem: Hoist the national flag and sing the national anthem with respect and pride.

Contribute to the community: Participate in volunteer or charity work to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Respect the diversity: Respect the diversity of our nation and promote unity, equality, and justice in your daily interactions with others.

By incorporating these activities, we can truly appreciate the values and principles of our Constitution and work towards building a better nation for all. As students, we have the power to shape the future of our country, and by actively participating in the celebration of Republic Day and upholding its values, we can play a vital role in shaping the future of our nation.

Welcome Speech for Republic Day for Students and Children

Welcome speech for republic day.

Good morning to one and all present here. I am here to present a welcome speech. As we all know that we have gathered here on a very special occasion for a democratic country “India”. Today’s day is the 72nd Republic Day of our beloved country India. Warm Greetings and a very warm welcome to all of you present here, with special mention to our Hon’ble principal, vice-principal, and respected teachers. I will share my views through my Welcome Speech on Republic Day. I would like to say a lot of thanks, my Principal Madam, as just because of her I have got such a wonderful opportunity to come on this stage and speak about my beloved country on such auspicious occasion of Republic day.

welcome speech

India is a self-governing country since 15thof August 1947, after getting freedom from the British Rule. That day we are celebrating Independence Day every year on the 15th of August in 1947. However, the constitution of India came into existence on the 26th of January in 1950 and hence making our country a full-fledged republic. This day is often celebrated with colorfully organized culture events held in every part of our country. The streets hum with patriotic songs with true spirits are found in every heart as they share in the celebrations.

Republic means the highest authority and power in the country is the people living in the country.  The only the public has the right to elect their representative political leaders to lead the country based on the constitution in the right direction. The constitution has encouraged all citizens to have equal social and economic rights.

Our Great Indian freedom fighters have struggled a lot and sacrificed their lives to get the “Purna Swaraj” means “Complete Freedom” in India. There are uncountable freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Chandra Shekher Ajad, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Ballabh Bhai Patel and many more. Each and every citizen of this country must remember them on such a great occasion.

Our first Indian President Dr. Rajendra Prasad said that we have found the whole of this vast land brought together under the jurisdiction of one constitution, one union. It takes over responsibility for the welfare of all men and women living in it. But, unfortunately, we are still fighting with crime, corruption, violence, and terrorism in our country. These nation-wide problems are pulling our nation back from going to the path of development and progress.

Conclusion:

Therefore, there is a need to unite again to save our country from such indirect slavery. We should be aware of social evils such as poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, global warming, inequality, etc. Other than celebrating the national glory and recalling the achievements of our motherland, we should also take a pledge to eradicate the social evils from our society which is the big hurdle in the way of our country’s progress.

We all should take an oath to maintain the sovereignty of our nation. This sovereignty is priceless. With these humble words, I bow my head to the flag with the words “Jai Hind, Jai Bharat”.

Republic Day Welcome Speech 1

Warm Greetings and a very warm welcome to all of you with special mention to our Hon’ble principal, vice principal and teachers.

I, Anshika Pandey from Class – XII (A), would like to extend my regards and express my gratitude towards my teachers, for giving me the opportunity to felicitate everyone and host this auspicious occasion of Republic Day. We have gathered today, as you all know, to celebrate the 70 th Republic Day which is celebrated nationwide, by the President of India to small children in pre-nursery schools, those who host our Tiranga Jhanda with a lot of excitement.

I need not to say more about this day because we as Indians have been celebrating this day ever since we grew up. But I don’t know how many of you know that this day is marked by a 3-day celebration in the capital city of New Delhi, whereas each of the state also celebrates this day with a lot of excitement and zeal.

The principal event of this 3-day celebration is undoubtedly the parade which is organized at Rajpath, in the presence Indian President and a guest of honor. In fact, several other states have also begun to organize such parades in order to mark this momentous day.

The celebration kick starts with the Prime Minister who pay floral wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, in order to pay tribute to the soldiers who sacrifice their lives for the motherland. Once the garland of flower is laid, it is followed by 21 gun salute with the national anthem being sung thereafter. Honor awards are then given away to some specific members of the armed forces or to their relatives and general population for their acts of bravery and courage. Once this is complete, the parade starts.

Needless to say that the parade is a grand event; in which the head of the state from a foreign country is always invited to watch the parade with the political leaders of our country. The parade showcases India’s military might as well as its vivid cultural heritage.

When the parade starts those who are felicitated with awards are honored by the president for their service to the motherland. There is a helicopter brigade who during the same time hovers at the India Gate and showers the gathering with rose petals. The sight of the parade looks spectacular as various dance troupes sing as well as perform while at the same time fighter planes fly overhead releasing the three colors of our Tiranga in the form of smoke trails behind them. The parade always concludes with the military members performing exciting stunts on the motorbikes.

In other words, there is a lot of preparation that goes behind the Republic Day Celebration and this throws light on the importance of this day. Now without further ado, let’s kick start the republic day celebration by calling on stage the first dance group from VII Standard.

Let’s welcome them with a huge round of applause!

Republic Day Welcome Speech 2

Respected Principal, Beloved Teachers and My Dear Students- Warm Greetings to Everyone!

As you all know that we have been gathered here on the very special occasion of the Republic Day of India. Being the Vice Principal of this school, I take the opportunity to deliver a welcome speech on Republic Day.

You as students might be wondering why we celebrate this day with pomp and show. This is done as India got independence from Britishers on 15 August 1947. This day is celebrated as Independence Day, while the Constitution of our country was enforced on 26 January 1950 which we all celebrate as the Republic Day every year. The constitution of our country is a document which is considered to be supreme in every respect. Every article is well drafted by the constituent assembly of our country.

The term Republic means the supreme power of the people living in the country and only the public has right to elect their representatives as political leaders to lead the country progressively. So, India is a “Republic” where people elect its leaders as President, Prime minister, etc. Our Great Indian freedom fighters have struggled a lot for the “Purna Swaraj” in India. They did this, so that the future generations may live without struggle and take the country forward on the road to development and growth.

The great freedom fighters of our country fought continuously against the British rule to make India a free country. You all should remember their sacrifices towards our country and pay due respect and homage. We should also remember them on such great occasions and salute them. All this has been possible just because of them as now we can think and live freely without any coercive governance in our nation.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of our country has rightly said that “This entire country has been brought together under the jurisdiction of one constitution and one union which takes over responsibility for the welfare of millions of people which inhabit it”. It brings disgrace to our country and leaders when we are still fighting with crime, corruption and violence. The need of the hour is to get together to save our country from such slavery as it is pulling our nation back from moving towards main stream development and progress. We all should be aware of social issues prevalent in our country like poverty, unemployment which stops us from going ahead.

We as teachers play a very important role in your lives and if we want to make our country corruption free, then we all should join hands and carry out possible efforts to lead our nation ahead. Small steps lead to huge differences. Every individual should make an effort and then our country would be a different place altogether. Today on this auspicious occasion we all need to take a pledge for solving such problems in the society to make our country the best country in the world.

Republic Day Welcome Speech 3

Respected Principal, Vice Principal, Professors and My Dear Friends – Good Morning to one and all!

I, Sakshi Kalra from B.COM (H) program, welcome you all to the Republic Day Function of our college. It’s a very special occasion for all of us, as on this day the constitution of our country was adopted in the year 1950. On this day, the Government of India Act, 1935 was replaced by the Constitution of India.

Needless to say, we have our national holiday on 26 th of January where every Indian enjoys a day of complete freedom. The Constitution of India was adopted by the constituent assembly of India on 26 th January 1950. The date 26 th January was chosen because back in 1930, the Indian National Congress proclaimed “Purna Swaraj” on 26 th January.

How many of you know about who will be the chief guest on the 70 th Republic Day of India, 2019. Well, those of you who don’t know, it is going to be Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa. He is the fifth as well as the present South African President. Cyril Ramaphosa was invited by Shri Narendra Modi ji, our Prime Minister at the time of G20 summit which was conducted in Buenos Aires – the capital of Argentina in Nov-Dec 2018.

The reason why he is chosen for this momentous day is because our country is celebrating the 150 th birth anniversary of Bapu, i.e. Mahatma Gandhi who was very closely connected with the natives of South Africa. Moreover, according to PM Narendra Modi, his visit to our country will help in establishing a stronger connection with South Africa.

Other than celebrating the national glory and reveling in the achievements of our motherland, we should also take pledge to uproot the social evils from our society which is hindering in the way of our country’s progress. Corruption, poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, etc. are the social evils that are not letting our country attain an overall development. After all, how can a nation prosper when the majority of its population is suffering from unemployment, poverty and lack of opportunities?

Every year we hear the messages of patriotism, brotherhood, unity and integrity, but how many of us really bother to keep our country united irrespective of our caste, class, race and religious differences? In the act of pursuing our selfish interests, we should never forget the sacrifices of our great freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the motherland and our soldiers who fight on borders just to secure us and our country from any sort of terrorist attack.

So while rejoicing in the glory of our country and its accomplishments, we should try and bring a positive change in ourselves by bringing purity in our thoughts, love and warmth in our hearts as well as sensibility towards others.  Only then will we become a better nation and a better place to live in.

The celebration thereafter will be a real celebration and this is the only way to pay actual homage to our freedom fighters.

Republic Day Welcome Speech 4

Hello Everyone – Warm Welcome to the Republic Day Celebration in our office auditorium!

I, Sonakshi Kalra from ABC Group, feel extremely delighted to host this event on such an auspicious day. Needless to say, this is a very important date for all of us as on this day, i.e. 26 th January 1950 the Constitution of India was adopted. For every nation, there are some specific days which are marked as red-letter days. For us as Indians, the Republic Day has been marked as one such day which is celebrated nationwide with great zeal. Why this day is important is because with this day our country became a republic nation. Therefore, this day holds a lot of importance in our lives as Indians and why we look so forward to it every year.

Let’s trace the origin of the Republic Day! It goes back to the pre-independent times of 1929 during which the Indian National Congress Party at the time of its session in Lahore passed a resolution under the aegis of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru – then President of the Indian National Congress. The resolution was the declaration of the ‘Complete Independence’ and celebrating this day as the Independence Day across the country.

However, later on when the Constitution of India came into force in the year 1950 on 26th January, India was declared as a sovereign, republic and democratic nation. Since then, the day has been historicized as Republic Day of our country.

The ceremony kick starts in the morning itself where the wreath is laid down at the Amar Jawan Jyothi by the Prime Minister at the India Gate. It is a way of paying homage to our martyrs or great freedom fighters who have sacrificed their lives for their motherland. At sharp 8 am, our president arrives at the Rajpath accompanied by the Chief Guest. They are given a warm welcome by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, including the Defence Minister.

After arriving at the specially designed podium, our president hoists the national flag. Soon after this, the Republic Day parade begins which I am sure all of us eagerly await. The march, as we all know, is led by war heroes, the armed forces, who are honored with the gallantry award. They are then followed by young girls and boys who have bagged National Bravery Award in that respective year.

As the sun sets, the Raisina Hill where the Rashtrapathi Bhavan is situated is decked up with lights thereby presenting a spectacular glittering view. The celebration lasts for 3 days and is brought to a close in the evening of 28 th January with a ceremony called the ‘Beating the Retreat Ceremony’. This ceremony is indeed very impressive as it is organized by our armed forces. Other than this, Republic Day celebrations are organized in a grand manner in district headquarters, state capitals, Panchayats as well as Blocks which are attended by the local public.

To sum up, Republic Day is considered a great historical day the importance of which cannot be undermined in any manner. So let’s come together and make this day joyous; full of rapture and excitement.

Good morning to everyone who is present over here on the prosperous occasion of 26 January Republic Day. A Happy Republic Day is celebrated every year on the 26th of January. This year India will celebrate its 75th Republic Day 2024 .

Why do we celebrate Republic Day? India Republic day is celebrated to remember the historic moment when our nation became an independent republic country. As we all know that India got its independence on 15th August 1947 and the country didn’t have its own constitution, instead India was governed by the laws implemented by the British. However after many deliberations and amendments, a committee headed by Dr. B.R Ambedkar submitted a draft of the Indian constitution, which was adopted on 26th November 1949 and officially came into effect on 26 January 1950.

On the same day, Dr Rajendra Prasad also began his term as the first President of India. And the Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India under provisions of the new Constitution.

Ever since Independence, the main celebration of Happy Republic Day has been held at the national capital, New Delhi at the Rajpath in the presence of the President, Prime minister, and other high-ranking officials of India.

As a tribute to India, on Republic Day ceremonial parades take place at the Rajpath. The celebration begins from the gates of Rashtrapati Bhavan followed by Raisina hill on the Rajpath past the Indian gate is the main attraction on Happy Republic Day. After the ceremonial parade, there is a presence of various dignitaries like the President, Prime minister, and other higher government officials at the Rajpath.

Every year as a part of celebrations, India has been hosting guests of honour, that could be the head of the state or government of other countries, for the 26 January Republic Day celebration at the capital. This has been the case since 1950, for example on 26 January 2021, the former president of the united states of America Barack Obama was the guest of honour on 26 January Republic Day. Sadly due to the COVID outbreak, there wasn’t any guest of honour for the 72nd Republic Day celebration. In 2024, India will be honored to host France's President Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest for a Happy  Republic Day celebrations, fostering diplomatic ties and cultural exchange between the two nations.

The flag hoisting ceremony at the Rajpath in the national capital takes place mostly at 8:00 AM, which is followed by a Republic day speech by the President and a Republic Day parade.

26 January Republic Day March is considered to be an eye-catching element of the festival and it showcases Indian cultural and social heritage. It also showcases the Indian Defence Capability. Nine to twelve different regiments of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, accompanied by their bands, march in all their official decorations. The President of India, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute.

On this prestigious occasion the heroes of our country, the soldiers are not forgotten. Prestigious awards will be given away to the martyrs and the heroes who have dedicated their lives to protect the country at any cost.

India Republic day is celebrated in every school, college, and office with great enthusiasm and energy. In schools, various competitions are held which include dancing, singing, and giving a Happy Republic Day speech.

But beyond it all, the constitution declares that India is a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. It assures its citizens’ justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity. It also gives us our rights and duties as citizens. On this Happy Republic Day 2024, I hope that no matter who we are, rich or poor, a powerful politician or a regular citizen, we continue to respect these basic principles and values given to us by our amazing constitution. So that, as we move forward and continue to build this nation, we do not leave behind the foundation on which our country is built.

I want to end this speech by saying that India is a democratic country. The citizens living in a democratic country enjoy the privilege to elect their leader to lead the country.

Although we have seen a lot of economic improvements and success as a country, we still have many hurdles in our paths, such as poverty, unemployment, and pollution. It is our duty as citizens to face these challenges and come out stronger on the other side.

Now we know why do we celebrate Republic Day. So one thing we all can do today is to promise each other that we will become a better version of ourselves so that we could contribute to solving all these problems and making our nation a better place. Thank you, Happy Republic Day and Jai Hind.

  • This day becomes more significant as a few of our fellow Indians express their worry about losing the fundamental freedoms that the constitution has granted us.
  • Even though we have been celebrating Republic Day as a national holiday since we were young children, we only came to fully appreciate its significance as we got older.
  • The 26th of January is designated each year as Gantantra Diwas. The Indian Constitution went into effect on this day in 1950.
  • Numerous rights and obligations are also granted to us by our constitution. People’s fundamental rights are upheld in our democratic nation.
  • Although there are many factors that divide us in society, such as caste and religion, we are all Indians on a larger scale. India is a wonderful illustration of “Unity in Diversity.” The uniqueness of our nation is that despite our varied linguistic heritage, wars, and divisions, on national holidays we all come together as one.
  • The 26th of January has been a special day for all of us since we were young. Many of us may remember this day as a festival that is observed in schools with cultural programs and other events. Some of us got up early on this day to see the Republic Day procession.
  • The military procession begins at Vijay Chowk and ends at the Red Fort in Delhi, the nation’s capital. The equipment and weapons that the army displays during the parade demonstrate the strength of our armed forces.
  • On this day, both the armed services and citizens are given awards and medals for courage. The young children who receive prizes from the prime minister for displaying the height of bravery are the major draw of the bravery awards. Everyone feels special when the helicopters of the armed services fly past the parade area and sprinkle rose petals on the spectators.
  • The national anthem brings the show to a close. You stand up to show respect for the national anthem whether you are at home or watching the parade in person. It’s a day that inspires us to see past differences in caste, creed, religion, state, language, and colour, and it helps us all feel the same way about our love for our nation.

Ending – This is all from my side. Have a wonderful Republic Day and a prosperous year ahead.

Republic Day Speech in Hindi

As Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India, we have provided the Republic Day Speech in Hindi below for the convenience of Hindi board students.

The welcome speech template

To be effective your welcome speech needs to meet expected, as well as any specific, requirements dictated by the occasion.

The 6 standard welcome speech content ingredients

A woman with a cookbook reading a welcome speech recipe. Plus, a list of ingredients.

There are six common or standard content items in a good welcome speech.

  • Greetings to welcome everyone and thanking them for coming along.
  • Acknowledgement of special guests, if there are any.
  • An introduction of the event itself and a brief overview of special highlights the audience will want to know about.
  • Any important housekeeping information, for instance: where the bathrooms are, where lunch will be served and when...
  • An introduction for the next speaker, if there is one.
  • Thanking everyone for coming once more and then concluding having made everybody feel at ease, eagerly anticipating what is to come.

Numbers 1, 3, and 6 are basic essentials you cannot do without. Numbers 2, 4 and 5 may, or may not, be applicable. Pick what you need from them to fit your occasion.

Short sample welcome speech for a conference

Now let's put all six ingredients into an example of a short welcome speech to open a conference that you can adapt for your own speech.

* (This speech is pure fiction! I made it up to show you how it's done. You'll see its tone is formal rather than informal to fit the occasion. I don't think there is a group called Parents United. However, there are others with a similar mission: 10 Inspiring Organizations that Promote Literacy and Education .)

Example welcome speech - "Readers by Right"

"Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith, Jane Brown and all of our guests, good morning!

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and great pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you all here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in this special occasion, our 5th annual Children's Day Conference. Thank you for coming. That many of you have willingly traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is.

Quote extract: We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential.

Parents United is committed to actively raising the quality of life for every child. We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential. Our task is to make it possible. Our mission is to provide practical, step by step assistance.

This year our theme is literacy. We've named the day 'Readers by Right'.

Thanks to the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are aware of 'rights' in many spheres, including education.  Article 26 declared it should be compulsory and free for children.

That goal is as pertinent today as it was then. And it's a goal I know we all share - the full development of every child. As a body, Parents United recognizes good reading skills established in childhood as the foundation of fulfilling, and ongoing education.

Quote extract: Jim and Jane bring their passion and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed.

We are honored to have Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith and Jane Brown with us today. All three are esteemed specialists in teaching young children to read.

Sue-Ellen has worked for a long time with educational authorities to establish programs putting in place necessary pre-reading skills. Her hard work needs no introduction. The results speak for themselves.

Jim and Jane bring their passion, and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed. Their work among disadvantaged English-as-a-second-language families has bridged gaps that were deep dark chasms.

Prepare yourself to be challenged, excited and inspired.

And before I handover to Lesley Watts, our coordinator for 'Readers by Right', who will outline the day's various events, I want to say once more on behalf of the Parents United organizing committee, welcome. It's wonderful to see so many of you here."

To shortcut wondering, "Should I say this?" or "Maybe I should say that?" and "Then again there's also ...", I have a very simple solution for you.

Download and print my  special greeting address planner .

It covers ALL the necessary ingredients that go into preparing a successful welcome speech. It's simple to use and easily filled out. Once it's done, writing your speech will be a lot less hassle as you'll have the core content ready to work with.

Writing your welcome speech

Tips to help you get your speech right.

When you're entering information into your speech planner:

  • ensure you've got all the names of individuals or special guests you need to mention specifically and, that you know how to pronounce each of them. Also check that you know and use their preferred pronouns: them/they, she/her, he/him...
  • double check the remarks you're going to make about them, or anything else, are factually correct.

Use your introduction of your guests/or the event, as a "teaser" for what is going to come. It will help create anticipation in the audience. Don't ruin it by giving too much away! Just enough to tempt and no more.

Keep it brief. One to two minutes is generally sufficient.

(The word count of my sample welcome speech is 357. It will take approximately 2 minutes to say .)

Use the S-S-S formula for success: Short, Simple and Sincere. Your listeners will appreciate it.

If you're stuck for words, here's a large selection of  adaptable welcoming phrases with example s entences.  Reading through them could help you to find exactly what you want.

What does a good welcome speech do?

Audience members listening intently.

An effective welcome speech has three important functions. It:

  • signals the official beginning of an event . It says to the audience, hush, sit down, stop talking and listen. What you came for is starting!
  • sets the tone for the occasion through the choice of language used . For example, using light-hearted and informal words to welcome guests to a dear friend's birthday party may be completely appropriate.  However, the same type of language to welcome family and friends to a memorial service is unlikely to be. In that setting, people generally expect a more solemn and formal word choice. They could be deeply offended and think the use of casual language is disrespectful.  Understanding and getting tone right is a key element in the overall success of your welcome speech.
  • unites the audience . It draws everyone together in the common purpose at the heart of the occasion. For example, at a birthday party, the welcome speech invites everyone to join in celebrating the person whose birthday it is. The welcome speech opening a specialist conference will affirm its principal purpose: the coming together of people with mutual interests to meet and share new knowledge. Or if a welcome speech is given to newcomers in a workplace, club or educational setting, its purpose is to give an introductory overview of how things work to help them feel more at ease in their new situation - to help them develop a sense of belonging.

Getting the tone right for an event

What is tone.

Tone is the combined impact of the words chosen to express something, with how they are structured and, delivered.  All three elements come together to create tone * .

Get tone wrong, and your welcome speech is a disaster.

Get it right, and it's a triumph!

(Yes, that's hyperbole but I'm sure you get the idea. ☺)

* Tone - a mood, quality or feeling

How to choose the right words

The beginning of getting tone right is to think about your audience and the event itself. Your goal is to unite and bring them together in the main purpose at the core of the occasion. What type of language will do that most appropriately and easily?

Infographic illustrating the principal differences between formal and informal language to create tone

To answer that question, think about the common interest everybody shares - the principal reason behind them getting together.  It will help guide your language choice.

Is it a fun event like a birthday party for close friends and family? If so, then informal language is likely to be the most apt.

You might hear something along the lines of: "Well, here we all are! The big day has finally arrived. Jean-Marie is 50! Half a century! How on earth did that happen?"

If it's a remembrance service for someone who has recently died, the language you're likely to hear is more formal.

For example: "Friends, family, colleagues, thank you for joining us today to celebrate and give thanks for our dear Jean-Marie. Your presence is gratefully appreciated."

What is appropriate? What is expected?  Do spend some time thinking tone through. Misunderstanding and getting it wrong can be very embarrassing for everyone. If in doubt, ask someone whose opinion you trust.

Feature image of Anchoring Script For Republic Day

26th January is celebrated every year as Republic Day in India. It was on 26th January 1950 that the constitution of India came into effect and our country became a Republic. Thus, the day is celebrated with great patriotism. On 26th January, events are held in various schools, colleges and local clubs. These events include flag hoisting, singing the National Anthem and other patriotic songs, speeches and cultural programs.

If you are going to anchor a Republic day event, this script will definitely help you. An anchor should always start a program with a fitting quote, a poem or some famous saying so that he or she is able to capture the attention of the audience. For Republic day events, patriotic quotes or poems can be a good start. After that, it is important to follow up with a good welcome speech.

For Example:

“Hello, good morning and very Happy Republic Day to all. Today is India’s 74th Republic Day. It has been 74 years since the constitution of India came into effect and our nation became a Republic. I am [your name], your host for today and on this beautiful day, I warmly welcome you all to [school/college name]’s Republic Day event. We are really honoured to have the Honourable Ramesh Patel, M.L.A., as our chief guest today. Honourable chief guest, respected principal sir/ma’am, dear teachers, guardians and students, I am very glad to have you all with us today and I welcome you with all my heart to witness and enjoy the event. Thank you.”

“I would first like to invite our respected principal, Mr/ Ms [full name] and our honourable guest, Mr Ramesh Patel, to please come up on the stage. Thank you.

Now, I would like to request our Principal sir/ma’am to honour our chief guest with a bouquet and memento. We thank you for gracing us with your presence. Thank you.”

After the ceremony

“Thank you, respected sir/ ma’am. I would now request you to please take your seats and enjoy the event. Thank you. Let’s give them a huge round of applause.”

“A thoughtful mind, when it sees a nation’s flag, sees not the flag, but the nation itself.” – Henry Ward Beecher

“It is now time for the flag hoisting ceremony. I would like to invite our chief guest, Mr Patel, as well as our principal, Mr/Ms [full name] to please come up to the hoisting stage and start the ceremony. Thank you.”

“I would request everyone to please stand at attention and salute our tricolour. Thank you.”

National Anthem

“Now, it is time for us to sing our National Anthem. May I request everyone to stand up straight in attention and sing the anthem as our school/college band plays the tune? Thank you.”

“Our National pledge is our oath of allegiance to our nation, the Republic of India. May I request everyone to stand straight in attention and say the national pledge after me? Thank you.

India is my country. And All Indians are my brothers and sisters. I love my country and I am proud of its rich and varied heritage. I shall always strive to be worthy of it. I shall give my parents, teachers, and all elders; respect and treat everyone with courtesy. To my country and my people, I pledge my devotion. In their well-being and prosperity alone lies my happiness.

Thank you, everyone. You may now take your seats.”

“I would now request our respected principal sir/ma’am to please come up on the stage and say a few words on this special occasion of our independence day. Thank you.”

After the speech

“Thank you, Sir/ Ma’am. Your words always inspire and encourage us. Indeed, we are the citizens of this great nation and we must never take our freedom and our constitution for granted. We will always remember your words. Thank you. Everyone, please give him/ her a huge round of applause. Thank you.”

“As long as you don’t achieve social liberty, whatever freedom is provided by the law is of no avail to you.” – B. R. Ambedkar

“Our students have prepared speeches today on various topics like social liberty, law and order, freedom, constitution and more. I would now like to invite them on the stage to present their speeches. First, we have Mr/Ms [student’s name] from class [x]. He/she will be expressing her views on the topic of social liberty. I would like to request Mr/Ms [name] to please come up on the stage. Thank you.”

“Thank you, Mr/Ms [student’s name]. That was indeed an amazing speech. You may now take your seat. Next, I would like to invite Mr/Ms [student’s name] on the stage to present his/her speech on the topic of [topic]. Thank you.”

Similarly, you can invite and introduce the rest of the students.

“Where words fail, music speaks.” – Hans Christian Andersen

“Now our school/college choir will sing a patriotic song. May I request the choir members to take their positions? Thank you so much. To everyone else, I request, please take your seats and maintain silence. Thank you.”

After the song

“That was beautiful. Everyone, please give them a huge round of applause. Thank you so much.”

“India is a land of rich beauty and cultural diversity. On this beautiful day, the students of our institution are going to perform a dance that brings together that diversity and creates perfect harmony. This fusion dance takes inspiration from the classical and folk dance forms of all the different regions of India. I would now like to invite the participants to the stage. Thank you.”

After the performance

“What a wonderful performance. Thank you so much. I would like to request everyone to please give them a huge round of applause.

“It is now time for the prize distribution ceremony. We had our annual sports days on the 23rd of January and the winners are going to be awarded today. I would like to request our honourable chief guest and our respected principal sir/ma’am to please come up on the stage so that we can start the ceremony. Thank you.

I will now be calling out the names of the winners one by one… “

Speech by the Chief Guest

“A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new; when an age ends; and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.” – Jawaharlal Nehru

“We are now approaching the end of this event. But we can not conclude it without having our honourable chief guest say a few words. So, I request honourable Mr Patel to please come up on the stage and say a few words. Thank you.”

“Thank you so much, sir. We will always remember your words. Thank you. You may now take your seat.”

“It is time for us to sing our national song, Vande Mataram. I request everyone to please stand straight and follow our choir. Thank you.”

“One of the pioneers of our country Lala Lajpat Rai once said, We must have complete faith in ourselves. We can be successful only if we believe in our efforts. ‘Nations are made by themselves. We can take guidance, cooperation, and advice in certain matters but not patronage and diction in all the matters. We are not children but a mature nation with the wisdom of 6000 years behind us.

“With that, we have now come to the conclusion of the event. Thank you all for attending today’s Republic day event and making it successful. A special thank you to our chief guest, honourable Mr Patel, for taking time out from his extremely busy schedule and attending our event. Thank you so much. Thank you all.

We have prepared sweets for everyone. Please receive them before leaving. And once again, a very happy Republic day. Have a great day. Take care.”

This year will make the 75th Republic Day of India. This day reminds us of our golden heritage, where we must feel proud to be an Indian. It took exactly 2 years, 11 months, and 17 days to create the Constitution of India, after which India became a republic. ‘After the President of India’s speech, ceremonies are followed by parades by the Indian Armed Forces, Cultural and Social Heritage of each state and Union Territory of India. Not only this, there are award ceremonies, where awards are given to people with exceptional achievements. Our Highest Civilian Award is the Bharat Ratna. Our former President, Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was the first Bharat Ratna Award winner. Other awards are:

  • Padma Vibhushan
  • Padma Bhushan and
  • Padma Shree

‘From the natural backwaters of Kerala to the Cold Desert of Ladakh, every state and region represents their social and cultural heritage on Republic Day. ‘

‘On 26th January 2023, the Prime Minister of India said, ‘India will always be thankful to the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation. Their exemplary service motivates a billion Indians.’

‘Days like Republic Day are of national importance, and we must remember the sacrifices of our ancestors, who dedicated their lives to the country. Their sacrifices made India not only proud but a strong and self-reliant nation. So, let us all be proud to an Indian.

Thank you.’
