How to make the correct choice?

best writing courses australia

Those of you who are foraying into the ‘literary’ world recently may get a little bogged down by the myriad choices of content writing courses available in Australia.

Also, content writing encompasses a variety of categories to choose from depending upon your interest and true calling!

Consider the 4 C’s when choosing a content writing course :

  • Course Content
  • Course Description
  • Course Venue
  • Course format

Let me try to give you a quick walkthrough about the general types of content writing so that you are able to reflect on the choices of content writing courses available and make an apt decision.

Now let’s understand what all imbibes the so-called content writing .

Know more about Content Writing

Gone are the days when ‘writing’ was directly linked to a hobby or simply a way to pass time. Though content writing is a skill-based role, it’s rather not a cup of tea for everyone!

We can say Content writing is simply putting in words your thoughts /ideas /particular message targeted at a particular digital audience and influencing them to take any action- it could be that of visiting a website, buying a product or service…anything.

However, if you are looking at a full-time opportunity then your prospective employer may prefer at least a bachelor’s degree in the said course or in English/Communications or Journalism with a major in Content writing.

Freelance content writing necessarily doesn’t need any specific degree or qualification for providing content writing services.

Flavors of Content Writing

Content writing is a broad term that encompasses various different types or what i like to call…as.. flavours!

With the pass of time and the advancement of the digital revolution, various types of content are getting introduced.

However, I have tried to present below the most common ones that all of us would have heard at some point of time.

You can choose one of them depending upon your style of writing or interest.

SEO Writing

This type of content writing will help you in writing articles in a particular style by following a methodology to rank your article high in Google‘s search engine.

You can  go about it by using a certain tone of words, keywords, inbound and outbound links, usage of shorter and simpler sentences, etc.

Blog Writing

Blog writing is sharing your perspective/experience on a varied range of topics that is often in an informal style. You can post this content online where it gets an opportunity to be viewed by worldwide web users, in turn, inviting their comments on the same.

We can say it’s a platform where you can interact with others. Although it started off as a literary outlet for people who could share their views or ideas/travelogue etc it is now increasingly becoming an important online marketing tool.

Academic Writing

best writing courses australia

This is a nonfictional type of content writing. If you love data, research, and to put gently nerdy stuff…. this will work wonders for you!

In academic writing, you can present reports, research papers, etc on your research data.

It is also used for publications for teachers and researchers.

Academic writing is based on a particular subject on which you have done though and in-depth research.

Technical Writing

best writing courses australia

Now when we talk about Technical writing it may be more suitable for those of you who either have a Technology degree or experience in consumer electronics, hardware, and software, engineering, biotechnology, robotics, aeronautics, chemistry, etc.

This type of content writing involves creating technical documents like instructions manuals, user manuals, Product manuals, how-to guides, etc. The focus is on presenting complex technical information in an easily understandable form to the common end-users.

Creative Writing

best writing courses australia

As the name suggests this type of content writing is for those of you who love to imagine…spin stories…create a fictional world of your own….

Creative writing will give you wings to explore ideas and present them as a story/poem/play …. for that matter why not a movie!! …

It is used as a pure form of entertainment and is not curtailed by any facts or figures hence giving you a free hand to explore and write.

Copywriting

best writing courses australia

This type of content writing is a major business marketing and sales tool. The main reason is that when used in an effective way, it can elicit an active response from the target group.

So next time you end up doing a recent shopping by simply seeing an advertisement for TV or a billboard…owe it to a brilliant copywriter behind it!

Within copywriting, you can also foray into SEO copy, direct response advertising, or writing copy for certain specific industries.

Hopefully, by now I have been able to provide you a fair understanding of the different forms of Content writing.

Moving on lets now explore the various content writing courses in Australia…

Let’s Summarise!

Australia is increasingly becoming a popular destination for students owing to its top-notch education opportunities as well as post-study employment opportunities.

There is also a very strong cultural mix available in Australia and excellent student support systems.

So if you are looking at taking up any content writing course, may it be full-time or online, with more than 1,100 institutions and over 22,000 courses to choose from…..Australia is truly the place for you !!

Are you ready to begin your adventure? …….start today…well on second thoughts ..why not start NOW!

The 10 best creative writing short courses to kick off your practice

April 28, 2023

Whether you want to write a short story, novel, children’s book, biography or simply give in to your creative writing compulsion, we have the short course you didn’t know you needed.

Creative Writing_Edit

Which short course is best for creative writing?

So many choices, so many opportunities. Talk about paralysis analysis! Let us simplify your decision-making by calling out a few courses that are available to study online with leading Australian universities, through Open Universities Australia.

It’s worth noting that while the following are referred to as short courses when studied as a one-off, they are also known as subjects and can be studied while working towards a full-length degree. But more on that later!

Best for creative writing newbies

Maybe you never had the chance to exercise your creative writing muscle at school, TAFE or university. Unlike competitive sport, it’s never too late to get in the game. These short writing courses will demystify the writing process and unlock your inner storyteller.

1. An Introduction to Creative Writing, Macquarie University (18 weeks)

The first step to writing is reading with an analytical eye. Listen to lectures, take part in interactive writing workshops and be experimental in your writing exercises.

2. Creative Writing, Curtin University (13 weeks)

Learn about the different narrative techniques that writers use, then try writing short stories and scenes for film or the stage. Give writing poetry a go as well.

3. Creative Writing, Forms and Structures, Griffith University (13 weeks)

Understand the form and structure in a variety of genres and write original pieces as well as exegetical notes. What’s an exegesis? An essay that explains the logic of your thought process and choice of themes and literary technique. Woohoo! You’ve already learned something! This course also gives you an idea of what a degree in creative writing will be like.

Best for those interested in short stories

Short stories usually contain between 1000 and 4000 words. They’re compact, pack an emotional punch and are considered a genre of their own. ' The Tell-Tale Heart ' by Edgar Allan Poe and ' Bernice Bobs Her Hair ' by F. Scott Fitzgerald are some famous, if older, examples. Find more contemporary ones here!

4. Writing the Short Story, Griffith University (13 weeks)

Get granular! You’ll discover and discuss theme, allegory, symbolism, emotion, structure, mood, psychology of characters and much more. There’s even a section on avant-garde forms and elements.

5. Writing Short Fiction, Curtin University (13 weeks)

This is an intermediate-level course that examines the traditions, parameters and possibilities of short fiction. Discuss and dissect each other’s work in writing workshops and practise drafting and editing.

Best for those who want to write a novel (or novella)

First things first—what’s a novella? Because if you don’t know what it is, how would you know if you want to write one? If short stories are at one end of the spectrum and the full-length novel is at the other, novellas are somewhere in between. Novellas are usually around 17,500 to 40,000 words long, while novels contain 80,000 words on average.

6. Writing Long Fiction, Curtin University (13 weeks)

Find out how to plan a novel or novella, including common challenges of doing so. Come up with a new piece of work and write a few chapters. Engage in constructive critique of your course-mates’ works in progress while receiving feedback for your own.

7. Advanced Fiction, La Trobe University (12 weeks)

Apart from drafting an excerpt of your own work, take part in an intensive revision process with peer-to-peer feedback. You’ll also explore crime, speculative and historical fiction genres.

Best if you want to write non-fiction

Memoirs and biographies are hugely popular. Just look at the submission guidelines of major publishers like Allen & Unwin and Hachette . In hard numbers , non-fiction is head-to-head with fiction—59% of all Australian readers like non-fiction, while 65% say they like fiction.

8. Creative Non Fiction, La Trobe University (12 weeks)

Learn about different forms of memoir and creative non-fiction, how to tell other people’s stories and how to write about places, landscape and nature. Discuss making ethical and creative decisions, plus do a whole lot of writing—besides producing a 2,000-word piece, you’ll also respond to weekly online writing prompts.

Best for those who want to push (or destroy) the envelope

If commercial fiction wants its readers to be transported by its plot, experimental writing challenges readers to engage in active reading—it plays with form, stretches the limits of language and can’t be easily labelled.

9. Experimental Writing, Curtin University (13 weeks)

According to some, "fiction is a trudge, poetry is a dance". In this course, focus on post-modern poetry, avant-garde poets and other emerging genres. Create a performance text using spoken word poetry, mixed media and (if you wish) audience participation. Leave with a folio of poetic work.

Best if you want to write for kids or young adults

Nielsen BookData reports that the CYA (children’s and young adult) fiction category grew 16% in value between October 2021 and 2022 and represents 29% of the Australian book market. This makes it one of the most commercially-viable types of books you could write.

10. Writing for Children, Curtin University (13 weeks)

In this course, you’ll work towards creating three marketable concepts to a professional standard—a picture book, a work of junior fiction and one of adolescent fiction.

Is studying a creative writing course worth it?

Definitely, especially if you don’t already have experience writing regularly. A course will help you overcome any fears or misconceptions you have about writing. It will also arm you with formal knowledge and give you the analytical and critical vocabulary you need to discuss and improve your work.

Learning creative writing online is also perfect for thoughtfully reflective types… ahem, most writers. It’s a good balance of finite periods for learning, sharing and critique (camera on or off, depending on how you feel), along with quiet time to beaver away on your own.

You might even find real comradeship with the other aspiring writers in your course. It's an incredible way to build a network of support as you complete your works and attempt to get published!

Creative Writing Courses in Australia: An Introduction

The goal of creative writing is to communicate ideas and thoughts in a way that is unique to you by using your imagination and creativity. Simply put, it’s about putting your own unique spin on writing and straying from the conventional lines of academic or other specialized types of literature. There is no specific writing style or method associated with creative writing. This article thoroughly explains various creative writing courses in Australia. Now we’ll go over some of the categories of creative writing.

Types of Creative Writing

There are numerous forms of creative writing. The following are the most typical:

The seventeenth century is when novels first appeared. Nowadays, most people think of novels when they think of literature. In general, a novel is a fictional story that is told in 60,000–100,000 words, though it can be as low as 40,000 words or be more prolonged than 100,000. Novellas are often used to describe stories that are neither short nor long enough to be considered true short stories. A novella is generally a tale of between 10,000 and 40,000 words. You could also come across the term “novelette,” which describes stories with a word count of between 7,500 and 19,000 words.

Short Stories:

Short stories are fictional works that typically have a word count between 5,000 and 10,000. They tell complete stories and feature at least one character, a conflict of some kind, and at least one topic, just like books. A piece of flash fiction is one that is less than 1,000 words long.

Due to its inherent ambiguity as a genre, poetry can be challenging to define. There is no set length requirement for poems. The sentence need not rhyme. Sonnets, haikus, sestinas, blank verse, limericks, and free verse are just a few of the many distinct types of poems that exist today from all over the world’s cultures.

The majority of the time, poetry’s rules are flexible unless you’re composing a particular kind of poem, like a haiku, which has certain guidelines about its form or number of lines. A poem must excite the reader’s emotions, be written from a particular point of view, and convey a theme even though it isn’t essential to follow a particular length or format rule or utilize faultless grammar.

Plays, TV Scripts, and Screenplays:

The stage is where plays are designed to be performed. TV scripts are intended to be made into television programs, whereas screenplays are intended to be made into films. Also included in this category are scripts for videos created on other platforms. There are many similarities between books and short stories and plays, TV scripts, and screenplays.

They convey topics and inspire feelings through their narratives. The distinction is that because they are designed to be performed rather than read, they frequently rely heavily on a conversation because they cannot afford to include extensive descriptive passages. However, when creating a play or screenplay, stage directions or scene descriptions are other tools available to scriptwriters.

Creative Nonfiction:

Essays about oneself :.

A personal essay tells a factual story using a narrative format. Recollections of occurrences are frequently mixed in this type of essay with reflections on those events and your individual interpretations and feelings about them.

Literary Journalism :

Consider literary journalism to be journalism that has been creatively enriched. These are the tales that magazines like The New Yorker and Salon frequently publish. Articles of literary journalism present factual information in a way that resembles personal essays and short stories while still reporting on actual events.

Memoirs are personal essays of what short stories are to novels. In other words, a memoir is a book-length collection of personal memories, frequently focused on a single incident, that frequently incorporates viewpoints, epiphanies, and emotional insights into the narrative.

Autobiographies :

A book about your life and self-reflection is known as an autobiography. The author’s role as a tech inventor or his career as a professional athlete is two examples of how autobiographies frequently highlight significant events and may concentrate on one particular aspect of the author’s life. Although autobiographies frequently share a similar aesthetic with memoirs, they typically convey the author’s whole life story in a linear narrative as opposed to being a compilation of memories tied to certain incidents.

Humor Writing :

Stand-up comedy routines, political cartoons, and hilarious essays are just a few examples of humor writing.

Lyric Essays :

When writing about a topic, event, place, or feeling in a lyric essay, the author defies accepted grammatical and style conventions. Lyric essays resemble pieces as a result. They provide a more direct analysis of the subject matter than a poem would, which is why they are regarded as essays and not extended poems.

You’ll learn how to: Start earning money as a copywriter Write great headlines and words that sell Take creative briefs and conduct research Write long content, ads, brochures and more Use SEO to maximise web copy.

“I loved the breakdown on how to write great copy, from headlines to creative brief to SEO, and then combining it all by writing long copy in the last module. Video lessons were easy to follow, and handouts were very informative. I learnt more relevant info in the SEO copywriting module than I ever did in my three-year marketing and PR course at uni!” – David Giangiordano, Copywriting Essentials graduate

Get started as a professional copywriter.

We’re surrounded by copywriting, but most of the time we just don’t know it. TV ads, radio ads, magazine ads, websites, blogs, billboards, social media posts, brochures, packaging, signage – it’s all copy, it all sells something and someone has to write it. So, why not you?

If you’re tired of working for peanuts to support your creative endeavours, there is simply no better option than to become a professional copywriter. You get to write when you like, where you like, for whom you like, from home , with no overheads, staff or equipment needed. And you’ll get paid well to do it.

This inspirational, hugely popular Copywriting Essentials course gets results – teaching you how to get started without any prior experience. Created by copywriting dynamo Bernadette Schwerdt , the course has kick-started the careers of some of Australia’s most successful copywriters – even training the ones that go on to train other copywriters!

This course is ideal for:

  • Creative writers who would like to open up a new and rewarding income stream
  • Novice copywriters who want to increase their confidence and writing skillset
  • Experienced copywriters who want a foolproof ‘tool kit' of templates and structures that get results
  • Small business owners wanting to learn how to write copy to promote their own business
  • Graphic designers, publicists and comms teams wanting a ‘crash course' in how to write copy for clients.

More than copywriting

It’s not just about copywriting either. It’s about marketing and how to promote a business. Many of our students studied marketing at university (or have been working in marketing for decades) and say they wish they’d done this course instead of investing three years at school. It is jam packed with practical strategies, systems, templates and structures that take the guesswork out of marketing and make the process of promoting a business easy and understandable. Yes, it’s a copywriting course but you’ll get a bonus education in marketing too. That’s a lot of bang for your buck.

For those who crave variety, have a huge sense of curiosity about the world they live in, and love to work with a wide range of different products and services, the world of copywriting is for you.

Not only will you get the inside secrets of how to become a world-class copywriter, you’ll also get to connect with other like-minded students who are all doing the course at the same time.

Check out the feedback this course generates and discover why so many students love Copywriting Essentials –  and why you will too.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Is this course anything to do with the © symbol? A: Nope, it has nothing to do with ‘copyright’ ; the © symbol. Instead, copywriting is the art of writing words (or ‘copy’) that sell, and the people who write those words are copywriters – with a W.

Q: Who is this course for? A: This introductory course is really for anyone looking to dip their toe into these waters and see if this life suits. More specifically, it is brilliant for creative writers who want to earn some regular income from their writing. Also journalists and freelance writers looking to add copywriting to their suite of corporate services. It’s also really useful for entrepreneurs and business owners – to control their message and communicate it strongly.

Q: Can I make good money? A: This is one of the few writing areas where we can quite confidently say that it’s possible to make good money being a copywriter. (Well, being a good copywriter.) As your confidence grows, you can charge your clients top dollar for the work you create.

Q: I see you also offer another course called How to Build a Successful Freelance Copywriting Business. Which should I do first? A: Good question! If you’re doing both, it doesn’t matter which you do first, as there is almost no overlap – just try to do them within a year of each other. Both are created by Bernadette Schwerdt.

Q: I'm interested in the SEO Copywriting course too. When should I do that? A: You’ll get the most from the SEO Copywriting course if you’ve done the Copywriting Essentials course first. Even if you’re an established copywriter, we still recommend you complete Copywriting Essentials first as it will give you the fundamentals that the SEO Copywriting course is based on.

Q: What's the difference between the Copywriting Essentials, How to Build a Successful Freelance Copywriting Business and SEO Copywriting courses? A: Copywriting Essentials (that’s this one) gives you the skills to write great copy, while How to Build a Successful Freelance Copywriting Business will help you get lots of clients and make money! SEO Copywriting will provide you with the tools and techniques to take your copywriting to the next level, offer clients a valuable service they’ll pay extra for and give you a point of difference that will see you become the copywriter of choice.

All courses run multiple times through the year, so check the course dates for each.
