About the author.

Nick Palumbo's family hail from Messina in Sicily. Yet he has solidified his legendary identity within Australia: bringing Messina to us. After making gelato out of a factory under the name Gelativo, Nick decided to open a small gelato shop in Sydney's Darlinghurst. His ethos was to create the best gelato possible, using only the freshest ingredients, from scratch. Over time, he developed the individual, experimental, elaborate flavours that his stores are so famous for today. Not only are the Messina stores achieving great things- with stores open in Australia, China, New Zealand and America-but Nick is personally achieving great things. He is the official chef for the Carpigiani Gelato University in Australia and New Zealand.

The best dining experience you will ever have! Sublime doesn’t do this experience justice. Absolutely superb in every aspect. Food: amazing Drinks: stunning Ambience: cool Overall: Not to be missed This is probably the closest that Australia will get to see a Heston Blumenthal dining... extravaganza at ( relatively speaking) a fraction of the cost. Sensational in every way. This is a treat par excellence for the gourmand or,if you want to blow your partners socks off, this is the place to do it. Fabulous meal. Unusual, different and so full of flavour. Loved every mouthful. Sweet and savoury Gelato, just delicious. Alcohol pairing was available too. A wonderful experience. Highly recommend.

Creative Department x Lumi Dining Collaboration

We are more than excited to be welcoming back Federico Zanellato ( Lumi Dining ) and for the first time, Karl Firla ( Oscillate Wildly ) into our tiny Creative Department kitchen.

If you’ve ever dined at Lumi or Oscillate Wildy, you’ll know that both these guys have been creating some of the most intelligent, well balanced and innovative food in Sydney. Both from hatted restaurants, and both truly admired and revered by diners and chefs alike. Federico and Karl will be joining forces with our own Remi Talbot to create a very special dining experience. Together the three chefs have curated a sensory experience which will really stretch your mind. A small dining room, a table of 8, and an 8-course degustation paired with alcoholic (or non-alcoholic drinks)... and a bit of theatre along the way. The menu is under wraps for now but involves a decent amount seafood and animal proteins, along with an element of gelato or sorbet in every dish.  Peak your interest?

Sittings available: 31st March – 1st April, 6pm & 8:30pm Hosted at: The Creative Department By Messina, 243 Victoria St, Darlinghurst. Tickets: 8-courses with non-alcoholic drinks $150 + $50 with the alcoholic pairing Allergens/dietaries: unfortunately we cannot accomodate any dietary requirements or changes to the menu.

Just In: Gelato Messina’s Degustation Restaurant Is Reopening in Marrickville Next Week

Foie-gras mille-feuille with sweetcorn parfait, yuzu-and-olive-oil gelato served with scallop sashimi and caviar, and truffle gelato with ricotta and butternut tortellini are a few examples of what you might find on the menu at Messina Creative when it opens on August 17. It’s a reboot of the original Messina Creative Department restaurant in Darlinghurst, which, until it closed almost a year ago, served a degustation menu in which every course – sweet or savoury – contained gelato or sorbet.

The venue, rebranded as Messina Creative, is in Messina’s sprawling new Marrickville HQ and follows a similar ethos to the original. Diners will enjoy six experimental courses, each using gelato or sorbet, matched with non-alcoholic drinks, or cocktails and natural wines.

Diners won’t find out until the evening of their experience what they will be eating, but dishes might also include pineapple sorbet with gin jelly, basil oil and hibiscus granita paired with a pumpkin-and-ginger shrub, or honey gelato topped with a lemon “beehive” and honey tuile, matched with a pét-nat from Orange.

Gift them their favourite dining experience. The Broadsheet Gift Card can be used at thousands of restaurants around the country.

The small, dimly lit restaurant space is separated from the main gelateria by a translucent curtain, with tables laid out in front of a dramatic deep-blue terrazzo counter, behind which chefs cook up their creations.

Messina Creative opens on August 17, 2023, at 1 Rich Street, Marrickville . Sittings from 7pm, Thursday to Saturday.

Since opening its doors next to our Darlinghurst store in 2016, the Creative Department has refined and redefined the ultimate sensory degustation experience. Every week, one new dish is added to the rotating 8 course menu.

The Creative Department has packed its bags and flown down to Melbourne this week, for our special Caviar sittings as well as a second week featuring our classic menu.

Hosted at our secret restaurant location out the back of our Windsor store, the 8 course menu is curated with savoury and umami flavours in mind, whilst highlighting the gelato component in every dish. Each dish is matched with an equally thought provoking non-alcoholic drink, to create a balanced sensory experience.
