World’s Best Paper Airplane

By John Collins

John collins.

(aka The Paper Airplane Guy) is an award-winning keynote speaker, science educator, and author of four books of original paper airplane designs. He travels all over the world demonstrating fluid dynamics and fun with his innovative paper planes.

All great planes used to be named after great women. My nod to that tradition was naming my world-record paper airplane design after my wife.

Suzanne represents a number of firsts. It’s the first glider to hold the record for distance, thrown by Joe Ayoob in 2012. It’s the first time a thrower/designer team has held the record. (Predictably, the old world record holder hated the idea, but Guinness liked it.) It’s also the first paper airplane to use a variable dihedral angle to optimize lift-to-drag over a range of speeds.

There’s still a $1,000 reward to use my plane to break the Guinness World Record for distance. We know the plane goes well beyond the current record of 226 feet 10 inches; Joe has thrown the plane more than 240 feet.

We hope you’ll build and fly the Suzanne glider. We’d love to know just how far the plane can go.

Glider or Dart?

how to make the best paper airplane video

Previous record holders were very small-winged darts. The wings were more like the fins on an arrow; simply for directional stability and not providing lift. It didn’t matter if the plane rolled, which they frequently do. The throw was a simple 45° launch, like any ballistic projectile.

For that reason, those kinds of planes were called ballistic darts ( Figure B ). The old record holder, a ballistic dart, took only 3 seconds to go 207′ 4″.

My plane is a glider ( Figure A ). It takes 9 seconds to fly 226′ 10″. My plane gets launched level, climbs on its own by generating lift, and really flies the last third of the flight. It gently touches down and skids to a stop. The old kind of plane simply crashes into the finish line.

Fold Your World Record Paper Plane

The folding is easy (throwing for a world record is not), but the taping will take some time. All folds are “valley” folds ( — — — — ) except for the “mountain” fold ( — •• — •• ) in Step 9. This tutorial is excerpted from my book The World Record Paper Airplane and International Award-Winning Designs which you can find at thepaperairplaneguy.com/shop .

7. Fold the top down, across the point where the diagonal creases cross.

8. Fold the top corners down to meet at the centerline. The top layer creases should line up with the bottom layer. Follow the existing creases.

9. Fold the plane in half. The mountain fold means you flip it over first, then fold in half.

10. Rotate the plane ¼ turn so that the center crease is on the bottom.

11. Make the wing fold. Start by positioning the creased edge of the wing against the center crease, but don’t fold yet. Keep pulling the wing down until the little white triangle is gone. Now fold. Then make the other wing match.

12. Cut the tape into strips 30mm long: 3 strips about 2.25mm wide, and 7 narrow strips about 1.5mm wide.

how to make the best paper airplane video

13. Apply tape strips in the numbered order shown here. Note that strips 3, 4, 5, 15, and 16 are wider strips. Strips 3, 4, and 5 are all cut from one wide strip. Strips 10, 11, and 12 are all cut from one narrow strip.

how to make the best paper airplane video

14. Use your dihedral gauges to set the angle at the nose at 165°, and at mid-wing 155°.

Going the Distance

how to make the best paper airplane video

To throw your world record plane, hold it where the most layers meet (at the thickest part). Keep the wings level. Strive for smooth acceleration.

Get the plane flying straight, and then work up to a fast throw. For turns at regular gliding speeds, you’ll adjust the trailing edge of the plane normally. See “The Flight Stuff” below for tips on adjusting your plane’s control surfaces.

But keep in mind that the faster this plane flies, the closer to the nose your adjustments will be made. At our highest throwing speeds, if the plane veered right on launch, I would bend the leading edge on the left down a little, at the nose.

$1,000 Reward!

Use this design and officially break the world record for distance, and a $1,000 reward is yours. You must be named by Guinness as the world record holder.

John Collins teaches the Bluprint class “ Plane Games: Make & Fly Paper Airplanes ” where he shows how to fold and fly five of his best designs, including this world-record plane, and tests each one for distance, speed, and more.

How to make the world’s best paper airplane

John Collins designed the current world-record-holding paper airplane. Here are his tips.

Below is the script for the video above. If you want, give it a watch. If you want the info without the sound, read on. Also, while we have you, why don’t you s ubscribe to Popular Science on YouTube ?

So you want to make the world’s farthest-traveling paper airplane. There are four things to consider:

No. 1: The Paper

Paper is measured in the weight of a ream—500 pages. The average copier paper in the U.S. is 20-24 pound stock. Guinness World Record rules allow us to use paper that weighs up to 100 GSM (grams per square meter), or about 26.4 pounds. When you’re looking for distance, you want your paper as heavy as possible.

Paper that heavy usually comes in A4—an international paper size not commonly used in the U.S.

John Collins, the paper plane designer who currently holds the world-record, says you want paper that’s been photocopied on.

The heat process from the photocopy machine stiffens the paper. And the ink is not actually ink, it’s a microfine layer of plastic. Those two things—the heat and the plastic—help the paper hold a crease. Use something that’s in the recycle bin, you know? And don’t use something that’s been printed on. That ink will hurt the fibers of the paper. You want something that’s been photocopied onto if you’re using recycled papers.

No. 2: Forces and Center of Gravity

For any paper airplane, you’ll have to deal with two major forces during your flight—lift (upward force) and drag (backward force).Your plane needs to generate more lift than drag to go up—when more drag is generated than lift, the plane falls.

You have to engineer in a way for the plane to gain speed to counteract drag. You put a small bend at the back of the plane, upward, so that when the plane has gained sufficient speed, there’s enough air bouncing off of that upward bend to deflect the tail back down and that pulls the nose back up. Now it’s level again.

When designing your plane, you’ll want to make sure the wings are bent upward. This is called a positive dihedral angle, and helps the plane to correct itself if it starts to sway. When one side dips too low, it produces extra lift and the plane will return to its center of gravity.

No. 3: Location! Location! Location!

It’s not easy to find a space big enough. Collins’ world-record breaking airplane was thrown by quarterback Joe Ayoob at the McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA. Collins says you need the perfect weather conditions.

All of our best throwing days were 52 to 62 degrees, 25-30% humidity. If the air thickness is wrong, or if the wings aren’t stiff enough to take care of the air quality, the plane tends to die in that last third. You want perfectly stable.

No. 4: The Throw

The best form isn’t like a pitcher in baseball, or even like an NFL quarterback—it’s like a javelin thrower.

The great thing about Joe is that he had a way, a knowledge, of changing his throw to match the sport that really was invaluable in, like, looking how to throw the paper airplane the best way. We worked together for about 18 months and he was working on his throwing technique the whole time.

To summarize: Find 100 GSM A4 paper, design your plane with the proper center of gravity and center of lift, and throw it the right way in the right place under the right conditions. Congrats, you’re now a world record holder.

How To Make the Perfect Paper Airplane

And a DIY plane launcher to go with it.

Headshot of Popular Mechanics Editors

Ah, the paper airplane. A project that appears simple at first glance but is devilishly complex when you actually want your stationery aviation creation to fly a bit further than a few feet. So what are the right folds, cuts, and edges needed to created the perfect paper plane?

We spoke with Barnaby Wainfan, a technical fellow and aerodynamicist at Northrop Grumman, who gave us a few pointers. On April 22, 1993, the FMX-Facetmobile , a homebuilt plane of Wainfan's creation, flew for the first time, sporting a design that's a mix between an F-117 Nighthawk and, well, a paper airplane.

Here's how to make a paper plane that's guaranteed to dominate your living room skies.

Diagram, Line, Parallel,

Start by folding the paper in half down the center of the plane. Cut along the perimeter to get a perfectly symmetrical aircraft.

Now fold: First, the wings, down along line No. 1. Then grab the tail in the center and fold it in the opposite direction along the same line, so it extends above the wings. Next fold down along line No. 2. At the seam where the wings meet use a piece of Scotch tape to hold them together. Add a standard paper clip beside the nose to balance the weight of the thinner nose with the plane's wide wings. Last, fold the flaps up along line No. 3.

After a test flight, troubleshoot by adjusting those folds. If the plane nosedives, bend the rear flaps to make them more vertical. If it swoops up and then dives straight down, flatten them.

The Launcher

Diagram, Technical drawing, Parallel,

Sure, you could fling your perfectly created paper airplane with your own human muscles, but it's much cooler to build a machine to do it for you. This design uses a few robotics parts, a little bit of soldering, a few chops with the miter saw. But in about an hour, you'll have a machine purpose built for some airplane flinging.

Up, up, and away! Paper airplanes are a fun, easy way to pass the time—but how exactly do you turn a basic piece of paper into a jet-setting masterpiece? You’ve come to the right place. We’ve put together a handy, step-by-step guide to help you fold your way to a sleek, far-flying paper airplane . In a matter of minutes, you’ll be ready for take-off!

Folding a Classic Paper Airplane

  • If you want to make a colored paper airplane, use construction paper instead.
  • Make sure the crease points toward you when you’re folding your paper airplane or else you’ll fold the wrong corners.

Tip: Try using a ruler or a credit card to press the fold down if pressing it with your fingernail doesn’t work.

  • This fold creates the bottom of your plane so it’s easier to hold and throw once it’s finished.
  • Make sure your wings are symmetrical to one another so your plane stays level when you throw it.

Making an Advanced Plane

  • Try using different kinds of paper to add designs and test how it affects your plane.
  • Make sure the crease you folded is pointing toward you when you start folding the paper, or else your folds won’t line up.
  • Don’t let the point touch the bottom edge of your paper or it will affect the structure of your plane when you’re finished.
  • If you want your airplane to have a blunt edge in front instead of a point, fold the top of your paper so only the corners touch the center crease.
  • Your paper should look like a large triangle on top of a narrow rectangle when you're finished.
  • Don’t hide your previous folds inside or else it will affect your plane’s structure.
  • Make sure the wings on your plane are the same size so your plane doesn’t fly to one side.

To make a simple paper airplane, first fold a piece of paper in half lengthwise. Then, unfold it and fold the top 2 corners to the center. Next, fold the angled edges that you just created towards the center, leaving about 1 cm of space between the bottom of the angled edges and the crease. Fold along your original center-line, revealing a small inverted triangle. Now, fold the small inverted triangle up, to lock the angled edges in place. Then, turn your plane over and fold down the top 2 flaps to create wings. Hold it by the bottom edge, and let it fly! For tips on making a slightly more advanced plane, keep reading the article! Three paper airplanes made with different designs

What kind of paper is best for making a paper airplane?

We used coloured 8.5 x 11 inch, letter sized, printer paper (20 lb weight) to make these paper airplanes and it worked really well!

We also made some planes with heavier 24 lb paper . The planes made with this paper also fly great – they’re just a bit harder to fold because the paper is thicker.

What factors affect the speed of the paper airplanes?

The design of the paper airplane is a big part of how far and how fast it will fly. The glue tape we’ve added to the inside body of the planes will stop it from unfolding midflight, which helps it maintain its speed and altitude.

If your plane has its center of balance too far forward it will dive, and if it’s too far backward it will stall in the air. You can add a paper clip onto your paper airplane to adjust the center of mass.

Try throwing the paper airplane outside, with the wind at your back, for some extra speed and distance. Some acrobatic planes will do better thrown into the wind or straight in the air. Experiment to see what works best with your plane!

How to Fold 5 High-Flying Stunt Paper Airplanes

John Collins knows how to make a piece of paper go the distance. In 2012, he set the world record for the farthest flight for a paper aircraft. Collins, who's known as "The Paper Airplane Guy," has written a new book offering instructions for folding not only his record-setting design, but stunt planes that do loops and flap their wings.

Watch the video above and follow along as you create five of his favorite designs. You can also browse more detailed instructions on the pages below. Precise folds are key to producing a plane that's stable and flies the way its intended. You'll also need to have some tape handy to make these designs perform their best. As Collins is fond of pointing out, every flight is a test flight—don't be shy about tinkering with your paper craft to get it flying just right.

These instructional pages come from Collins' new book, The World Record Paper Airplane , which you can buy at his website . Also, be sure to watch our video interview with Collins to learn more about his craft.

Whether you are looking for a quick diversion from the grind of adulthood or are teaching a youngster DIY skills, these planes are a great way to add a little levity to your day. Paper Airplane DIY

Create fun and simple paper airplanes

Sam Henderson

For best results use a flat, thin-edged ruler. Make good creases along each edge. Adding double stick tape to the inside of the body keeps the wings from separating in flight.

The most basic version. A simple standard that everyone should know how to make.

Make 5 basic paper airplanes

  • Fold the paper in half vertically.
  • Unfold the paper and fold each of the top corners into the center line.
  • Fold the top edges into the center line.
  • Fold the plane in half toward you.
  • Fold the wings down, matching the top edges up with the bottom edge of the body.
  • Add double stick tape to the inside of the body. The finished plane should look like this.

This one is built for distance, plus it just looks cool.

Make 5 basic paper airplanes

  • Fold the peak toward you and 3/4” from the bottom of the paper.
  • Fold both top corners into the center line.
  • Fold the remaining tip over the two flaps at the center line to lock them in place.
  • Fold the plane in half away from you.
  • Fold the wings down 1” from the bottom of the plane.
  • Fold up the sides of each wing 1/2” tall.
  • Cut two small slits at the back of each wing. Fold up the tabs.

Built correctly, this bee-like beauty stays in the air for a long time.

Make 5 basic paper airplanes

  • Fold the paper in half horizontally.
  • Fold the peak down to meet the edge of the previous fold.
  • Fold the upper sides into the center line.
  • Fold the top edge 1/2” away from you.
  • Fold the plane in half towards you.
  • Fold the wings down 1/2” from the bottom of the plane.

Count on speed and distance from this sleek plane.

Make 5 basic paper airplanes

  • Unfold the paper and fold the top edge down 2”.
  • Fold the top edge down again to meet the bottom of the previous fold.
  • Fold the top edge down one more time to meet the bottom of the previous fold.
  • Fold the top edges down and away from you to the center line on the back of the paper.
  • Starting at the top of the thick nose of the plane, fold the wings down 1/2” in the front and slightly angled to 1 1/2” in the back. Fold up the edges of the wings 1/2”.

The Bullnose

This plane is deceptively fast and stays aloft for quite a distance.

Make 5 basic paper airplanes

  • Fold the top right corner over to the left side, making a fold from the top of the paper to the bottom right corner.
  • Unfold the paper and repeat for the left corner.
  • Unfold the paper again and fold the top right corner over to meet the crease made from the first fold.
  • Fold the left corner over to meet the crease from the second fold.
  • Fold the top right edge over to meet the edge of the fold from step 3. Repeat for the other side.
  • Fold the top edge down and towards you to meet the point where the right and left layers cross.
  • Fold the plane in half away from you. Staring at the nose, fold the wings down at a slight angle, 1/2” in the front to about 2” in the back.
