Learning how to type fractions is a useful skill that can be applied to numerous types of people. Teachers and students can use the skill for homework assignments or research papers as well as in chemistry and geometry. Chefs can also utilize it for professional recipe cards. Typed fractions are also seen in financial and statistical reports. Some fractions may be converted to decimals for typing ease; however, some fractions must stay in numerator/denominator form to properly convey the data represented. Typing fraction symbols may be done with an auto format feature in some programs or with key strokes specifically designed to express fractions in the proper form.

Typing Fractions on a PC

• If you want to type a whole number with a fraction, simply type the whole number followed by a space, and then include the fraction following the instruction above. For example 1 1/2.

• This function is usually on by default. However, you can check to make sure it is on by going to "Word Options", in the dialog box that appears click, "Proofing", and then click "AutoCorrect Options". • 1/4 = Alt + 0 1 8 8
• 3/4 = Alt + 0 1 9 0

• Place the cursor where you would like the fraction to be.
• Press Ctrl + F9 at the same time to insert a pair of field brackets.
• Place the cursor inside the field brackets, and type EQ \F(n, d). The "n" is the numerator and the "d" is the denominator.
• You must use all capital letters, and follow the EQ with a space.
• Press the ⇧ Shift + F9 at the same time to create the fraction.

• Type the numerator, and highlight it.
• Select Format from the menu, click Font, then select Superscript.
• Press Ctrl and the space bar to clear the formatting for the next step.
• Type a forward slash ( / ).
• Type the denominator and highlight it. Select Format, then Font, then Subscript.
• Press Ctrl + Space to clear the formatting again and move on with your typing.

Typing Fractions on a Mac

• Select “Language and Region”.
• Click on “Keyboard Preferences”.
• Click on the tab entitled “Input Sources”.
• Make sure the “Show Input menu in menu bar” box is checked.
• Exit system preferences.
• Now that you have done this, the flag of your country should appear in your menu bar at the top right of your screen.

• Click “Show Emoji and Symbols”.
• In the search box, type out the fraction you are looking for (e.g. 1/2=half, 1/8=eighth, 1/4=quarter). In the search results you will see the fraction you wish to insert into your document.
• Double click the fraction in the results box, and it should be inserted into whatever document you are working in.

• While in Pages, go to “Preferences”.
• Select “Auto-Corrections”
• A box with several options will pop up. Here you should check the box next to “Symbol and Text Substitutions”.
• Next, check the symbols and substitutions you are interested in using. In this case, make sure you check the “Fractions” box.

Copying and Pasting

• Highlight the fraction you want to use with your cursor.
• Right click on the highlighted text and click "copy".
• Click back to the document and place the cursor where you want the text to appear. Right click again, and click "paste".
• If the text doesn't match the format of the document you are working in, highlight the newly pasted fraction, and change the font and font size to that of the text in the document.

• Click through the results until you find the fraction you are looking for. Then, as above, highlight the fraction, and copy and paste it into your document.
• If you need to change the formatting, highlight the fraction again and then change it to the correct font and font size. You may also need to make it bold (or regular) when necessary.

A fraction represents the number of equal parts of a whole thing . You can recognize a simple fraction because it has two numbers separated by a line (or slash):

We call the top number the numerator and write it above the line. It tells us:

We call the bottom number denominator and display it below the line. It means:

In the example above, it's one part out of six slices, which the pie was cut into in total. We read it as one-sixth of the whole pie.

But, of course, the cake can be cut differently!

So, if you cut the pie in 2, then one slice is one-half of the whole. If you cut the pie in 3 parts, then one slice is one-third of the whole pie, etc.

Fractions are used all around us:

Every time you want to express part of a whole item, which can be divided into even pieces: like a cake 🍰, a chocolate bar 🍫, a watermelon 🍉, a pizza 🍕, etc.;

When we measure something 📏, especially in inches or eights of an inch; and

So, now that you know the fraction definition, let's have a look at the different types of fractions. In general, we have three types of fractions: proper, improper, and mixed fractions:

Proper fractions

In proper fractions, the top number ( numerator ) is smaller than the bottom number ( denominator ) . It means that it will always be less than one whole thing, e.g.:

🍰 5 slices of cake out of a cake that was cut into 6;

🍫 2 rows of a chocolate bar out of the whole chocolate bar, which has 5 rows; and

🍊 7 parts of an orange out of the entire orange that we cut into 8.

The general rule, which works for both positive and negative numbers, is that the absolute value of the fraction is less than one:

Improper fractions

So what is an improper fraction? It's a fraction where the numerator is larger than (or equal to) the denominator . Improper fractions are sometimes called top-heavy fractions . Examples of improper fractions are:

🍰 10 slices of cake, when each cake has 6 slices;

🍫 8 rows of a chocolate bar. A whole chocolate bar has 5 rows; and

🍊 21 parts of orange, if we cut each orange into 8 equal pieces.

Mixed fractions

Mixed fractions, also known as mixed numerals or mixed numbers, are another way of expressing an improper fraction. They are whole numbers (the number of whole things) and a proper fraction put together. So, we'll take a look at the examples from the previous paragraph:

🍰 10 slices of cake, when each cake has 6 slices is the same as → 1 whole cake and 4 slices out of 6 ;

🍫 8 rows of chocolate when the whole chocolate bar has 5 rows → 1 whole chocolate bar and 3 rows out of 5 ; and

🍊 21 parts of orange, if we cut the orange to 8 slices → 2 whole oranges and five slices out of 8

💡 The most important things to remember after reading this section:

• A proper fraction has a smaller top number (numerator) than its bottom number (denominator);
• An improper fraction's numerator is larger than (or equal to) its denominator ; and
• A mixed number consists of a whole number and a proper fraction .

When it comes to adding fractions, there are three scenarios:

The denominator (bottom number) is the same in both fractions – e.g., 3 / 5 and 1 / 5

This is the most straightforward case; all you need to do is to add numerators (top numbers) together and leave the denominator as is, e.g.:

➽ 3 / 5 + 1 / 5 = (3 + 1) / 5 = 4 / 5

The fractions have unlike denominators – e.g., 2 / 5 and 3 / 10

This is a bit more of a complicated case – to add these fractions, you need to find the common denominator.

You can use, for example, LCM – the least common multiple to find the common number of your two denominators: LCM(5,10) = 10 Another option is to multiply your denominators and reduce the fraction later.

Then, you need to expand each fraction to have this common denominator as its bottom number:

So, you should multiply the fraction with the denominator equal to 5 (our 1/5) by 2 to get 10 (remember that you must multiply both top and bottom numbers):

➽ 2 / 5 = (2 × 2) / (5 × 2) = 4 / 10

Your second fraction already has its denominator equal to 10:

Now that your fractions have the same denominator, you can add them:

➽ 4 / 10 + 3 / 10 = (4 + 3) / 10 = 7 / 10

You want to add two mixed fractions – e.g., 2 3 / 5 and 1 1 / 2

One solution for this kind of problem is to convert the mixed fraction to an improper fraction and sum it up as usual.

Let's convert it for 2 3 / 5

Multiply the whole number by the denominator:

Add the result to your numerator:

10 + 3 = 13

That's your new numerator – write it on top of your denominator:

2 3 / 5 = 13 / 5

Analogically, you can find out that 1 1 / 2 = 3 / 2 .

Do the standard addition of fractions with uneven denominators:

Speaking of the number four: my Latin professor said "IIII" was in common usage, just as was the language we refer to as Vulgar Latin ("vulgar," meaning "of the common people" as opposed to Classical Latin, used by scholarly, educated, elite citizenry).

The Roman numeral ll is not a valid representation for number one hundred (the correct Roman numeral is C)

Here are some more tips and tricks. If the bigger number comes first you add. For example VI is 6 because 5 + 1 = 6 But if the lower number comes first you subtract. But you subtract the bigger number to the smaller number. For example IV is four because 5 - 1 = 4. You don't do 1 - 5 = -4 The same rule applies to bigger numbers like 40 and 90. 40 would be XL not XXXX because 50 - 10 = 40 and XC is 90 and not LXXXX because 100 - 10 = 90

For those asking about IIII for 4 rather than IV, the only place you will (or should) see IIII is on a clock. Early clock makes thought using IV made the clock face look unbalanced. The 4 & 8 are both 2 places from the bottom. The 8, written as VIII, and IV looked unbalanced (due to the angle of the numbers and their width). So they wrote the 4 as IIII.

How do I write 500 million in Roman numerals? I tried online sites but they proclaim its invalid! They only go up to 3,999,999. I thought it would be D(M), with (M) being 1 million.

The cost of attending a university is one of the many factors students are considering when making their college choice. As May 1, "decision day," draws near, students should evaluate their financial aid offers with the cost of attendance to determine feasibility. With no relief in sight from rising tuition costs, students and their families might be wondering how they can get more financial aid from schools. Here are five steps students should follow to negotiate for more financial aid.

College has become increasingly expensive but there are ways you can potentially reduce the tuition ... [+] bill.

Step 1: Access Changes In Your Financial Situation

When schools initially send out their aid offers, they often use a formula to evaluate the family's ability to pay for college. Of course, a standardized system will always have flaws, giving the student wiggle room to negotiate with the college.

To negotiate successfully, students must prove their need is more significant than indicated on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the CSS Profile. When families fill out these forms, the information collected is based on two-year-old tax and income information. Many things might have changed since then, and these forms often don’t address those unique financial circumstances that families might find themselves in.

For example, families might have recently experienced high healthcare expenses, job loss or change in compensation, care for an elderly grandparent or a child with disabilities, natural disaster, change in marital status or family size, unusual capital gains, the loss of child support or Social Security benefits for a child, or many other factors. All of these factors and more can play a role in changing how much aid a family should get.

Step 2: Gather Relevant Documents

Once the family has accessed what has changed in their financial situation, the next step is to gather any necessary documentation to help demonstrate the changes or special circumstances. Make copies of any documents and include them in the appeal.

The next step is to look at the other financial aid offers received. If another university offers a student a substantial amount, they can use that in negotiations with their top choice university. However, only compare similar schools—a financial aid offer from a private university isn't comparable to an offer of financial assistance from a public university.

Step 4: Write A Letter Appealing For More Aid

The student is encouraged to be the one to contact the financial aid office. Colleges like to see the student take ownership of the application journey, and it might be better received if the student is the one to write it.

In the letter, clearly state what has changed and why more aid is necessary to be able to attend college. This letter shouldn't be more than 1-2 pages—the student doesn't need to include their entire life story, but it should continue with the relevant documents to prove that more aid is necessary.

The tone of the letter should remain courteous—remember, the financial aid officers do want to help students get more aid, but sometimes, they can't help more. Remaining polite in the initial letter and any further correspondence can help make a better impression.

Before writing and sending the letter, check with the institution on how they want to receive the letter. There might be a particular form that should go with the letter or be in a certain format. Following instructions can help improve the chances of getting more funds.

Step 5: Wait To Pay The Deposit

Students can appeal for aid at any point if their financial situation changes, including after the May 1 deadline. However, it might help if they wait to submit their enrollment deposit until they have written the appeal letter. It would also give students the chance to weigh all of their options more fully once they have the final decision from the financial aid office.

What Won't Work

• Making appeals based on academic merit. When trying to bargain for more financial aid, one thing that isn't considered is the student's academic achievements. If a student's grades or test scores have improved, which might mean they can qualify for a better merit-based scholarship, the student should contact the admissions office.
• Comparing a financial aid offer from a dissimilar institution. On average, the cost for a private college in 2021-2022 was $38,185, whereas public school attendees paid $10,338 in-state tuition or $22,698 out-of-state tuition. Because of the higher sticker price, a student's overall scholarship at a private institution tends to be higher. However, because the overall cost of attendance isn't the same for private vs. public schools, students shouldn't use a financial aid offer from Drexel University to negotiate with the University of Michigan.
• Harassing the financial aid office to get a response. Colleges are not obligated to give more money, regardless of the family's financial situation. Therefore, students and parents should respect the financial aid officers' time.

This financial aid letter can be worth thousands of dollars. Even if your appeal for more aid fails, your offer of acceptance is not in jeopardy. Do your research, prepare the documents, and write the letter to make your dream school more attainable.

Sending mail with USPS is easy! Our video will help you with most letters, cards, and postcards you send domestically (inside the U.S.), including U.S. territories and military bases in the U.S. and abroad.

Send Mail: Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Choose Envelope or Postcard

Envelopes are for sending flat, flexible things, like letters, cards, checks, forms, and other paper goods. For just 1 $0.68 First-Class Mail ® Forever ® stamp , you can send 1 oz (about 4 sheets of regular, 8-1/2" x 11" paper in a rectangular envelope) to anywhere in the U.S.!

Envelopes must be rectangular and made of paper to qualify for letter prices. Your envelope can be a maximum of 11-1/2" long x 6-1/8" high. (A standard No. 10 envelope is 9-1/2" long x 4-1/8" high.) You can fold what you put in your envelope, but it needs to stay flat—no more than 1/4" thick.

If you want to send letter-sized papers without folding them, you can use a large envelope (called a "flat"); the postage for flats starts at $1.39 . If your large envelope is nonrectangular, rigid (can't bend), or lumpy (not uniformly thick), you'll have to pay the package price.

TIP: If your envelope can't fit through USPS mail processing machines, or is rigid, lumpy or has clasps, string, or buttons, it's "nonmachinable" and you'll have to pay $0.40 more to send it. ( See additional postage in Step 3 .) You'll also have to pay more if your envelopes are square or vertical (taller than they are wide).

Postcards are for short messages that you don't need to put in an envelope. Save money using a $0.53 postcard stamp to send a standard-sized postcard anywhere in the U.S. Standard postcards are usually made of paper, are between 5" to 6" long and 3-1/2" to 4-1/4" high, and are between 0.007" and 0.016" thick.

Step 2: Address Your Mail

Envelopes: Write your address (the "return" or "sender" address) in the top left corner. Write the delivery address (the "recipient" address) in the bottom center.

Postcards: Postcards come in different formats, so write the delivery address in the space it gives you (on the same side you write your message and put the stamp).

Print your return address and the delivery address clearly, in the correct spots, to make sure your mail is delivered on time.

Address Format Tips

• Use a pen or permanent marker.
• Do not use commas or periods.
• Include the ZIP+4 ® Code whenever possible.

Write Sender Address

Write your address (the "return address") in the top-left corner. Include the following on separate lines:

• Your full name or company name
• Apartment or suite number
• Full street address
• City, State, and ZIP+4 Code

Write Delivery Address

Write the delivery address (the "recipient" address) in the bottom center of the envelope. Include the following on separate lines:

• Recipient's full name or company name

If the apartment or suite number cannot fit on the delivery address line above the city, state, and ZIP+4 Code, place it on a separate line immediately above the delivery address line.

Write the sender's address in the top-left corner. Include the following on separate lines:

• Full street address and apartment or suite number, if applicable

Special U.S. Addresses

Puerto rico.

Some Puerto Rico addresses include an urbanization or community code for a specific area or development. Addresses with an urbanization code, abbreviated URB, should be written on 4 lines:

Mail to military and diplomatic addresses is treated differently:

When you're done addressing your envelope, put what you're sending inside the envelope, then close and seal it (using the envelope's glue or tape).

Step 3: Calculate Postage (& Add Insurance or Extra Services)

A First-Class Mail ® Forever stamp costs $0.68 and goes in the upper right corner of the envelope. (You can also use any combination of stamps that adds up to $0.68.)

If your letter is heavier or bigger, or if you want to add insurance or extra services like Certified Mail ® service, you'll pay more.

A standard postcard stamp costs $0.53 . (Large or square postcards will cost more.) Put the postcard stamp in the space provided near the delivery address.

Postage for letters mostly depends on weight and size/shape. You can weigh your letter with a kitchen scale, postal scale , at a self-service kiosk, or at the Post Office ™ counter.

TIP: As a rule of thumb, you can send 1 oz (4 sheets of printer paper and a business-sized envelope) for 1 First-Class Mail ® Forever ® stamp (currently $0.68).

The postage for a large envelope (or flat) starts at $1.39 for 1 oz.

Where Can I Buy Postage?

• The Postal Store ® Shop online for all stamps and add-on postage for oversized or heavier envelopes.
• Post Office Locations Buy stamps at Post Office locations , self-service kiosks , or at Approved Postal Providers ® such as grocery and drug stores.

TIP: If you're sending larger envelopes (flats) using Priority Mail ® or Priority Mail Express ® service, you can use Click-N-Ship ® service to pay for and print your own postage online.

Additional Postage

If your envelope weighs over 1 oz, you can buy additional postage in the amount you need:

• Each additional 1 oz is $0.24, for letters up to 3.5 oz and large envelopes up to 13 oz.
• Nonmachinable items, including envelopes that are lumpy or rigid, or have clasps, string, or buttons will cost $0.44 more to send. You'll also have to pay more if your envelopes are square or vertical (taller than they are wide).
• You can also buy 1¢, 2¢, 3¢, 4¢, 5¢, and 10¢ stamps at The Postal Store .

TIP: Put the stamp on last; that way, if you make a mistake at any other point, you won't waste a stamp.

If you want insurance, proof of delivery, signature services, or other optional services, you'll have to pay extra.

• Certified Mail ® : Get proof that you mailed your item and that the recipient signed for it.
• Registered Mail ® : USPS's most secure mail service–mail is processed manually, handled separately and securely, and signed for along every step of its journey. The recipient must sign for the mail to confirm delivery (or attempted delivery).
• Return Receipt: You'll get a printed or emailed delivery record showing the recipient's signature. You can combine Return Receipt with other services, including Certified Mail, Registered Mail, Priority Mail Express ® service, and more.
• Adult Signature Required: Only an adult (age 21+) can sign for the mail after showing a valid government ID .

Postage Options

There are several ways to get postage for your envelope.

• The Postal Store ® --> ® and Priority Mail Express ® envelopes.
• Post Office ™ Locations --> ® such as grocery and drug stores.

Step 4: Send Your Mail

Once your envelope or postcard has the correct addresses and postage, you can send it several ways, including putting it in your mailbox or dropping it in a blue collection box or at a Post Office ™ location.

• Put your letter inside your mailbox and raise the flag (if you have one).
• If you have a cluster mailbox, drop it in the outgoing mail slot.
• Drop it off in a blue collection box.
• Take it to a Post Office lobby drop.

Important Note: If your envelope has postage stamps and weighs more than 10 oz or is thicker than 1/2", you can't put it in a collection box; you have to give it to an employee at a Post Office location. See more details on What Can and Cannot be Deposited in a Collection Box?

Bonus: Sending Mail Pro Tips

The Postal Service uses high-speed sorting machines to help process and deliver 425.3 million mail pieces each day. Here are some extra tips to improve your mail sending experience:

• Stay flexible : Don't send rigid (hard) objects in paper envelopes.
• Sending embellished invitations (for weddings, graduations, etc.)? Get them hand-canceled or put them inside another envelope.
• Need tracking? Learn about your options.

Stay Flexible

Postcards, letter envelopes, and large envelopes (flats) all need to bend to fit through USPS ® high-speed sorting machines.

• OK: Flexible, flat things like stickers, photos, trading cards, etc. should be okay—as long as your envelope stays flat, not lumpy, and less than 1/4" thick.
• Not OK: Don't put rigid objects (like flash drives, coins, keys, hard plastic card cases, etc.) loose in unpadded paper envelopes: They could get torn out of the envelope, jam the sorting machines, cause a delay, or even get lost.

Instead, for rigid and odd-shaped objects (or things you don't want to get bent), we recommend using a padded envelope or small box and sending it as a package .

Sending Embellished Invitations (for Weddings, Graduations, etc.)

If you want to send a specially decorated envelope (like some wedding invitations):

• You can pay the extra fee for nonmachinable First-Class Mail ® items, bring your mail to the Post Office™ counter, and ask the retail associate to hand-cancel your embellished invitations.
• For externally decorated invitations: If you use wax seals, strings, ribbons, etc. on your envelopes, don't try to send them exposed. Instead, to make sure your envelopes arrive looking the way your designer intended, put them inside another envelope .

Tracking is not available for First-Class Mail items. If you'd like to get tracking information for your letter:

• You can pay extra to send your letter using Priority Mail Express ® or Priority Mail ® service.

The demo takes place from the very beginning of the game when Eve, a member of the 7 th Airborne Squad is sent to Earth on a mission to reclaim the planet from the Naytiba, up to the first boss fight. This first stage will include the tutorial phase to help you familiarize yourself with basic combat features as you explore post-war Eidos 7, a human city now infested by the Naytiba, giving you an early grasp of gameplay mechanics that will serve you throughout the game’s story.

Steve Yockey , creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” is joining Starfleet as the new screenwriter for “ Star Trek 4.”

Story details remain under a powerful cloaking device, but Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot still intend the project to be the final chapter for the cast that rebooted the franchise in movie theaters with 2009’s “Star Trek,” including Chris Pine (as Capt. James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (as Cmdr. Spock), Zoe Saldaña (as Lt. Nyota Uhura), Karl Urban (as Dr. Leonard McCoy), John Cho (as Lt. Hikaru Sulu) and Simon Pegg (as chief engineer Montgomery Scott). ( Variety first reported the news in its cover story on the future of the “Star Trek” franchise.)

Yockey’s involvement is the most promising sign of forward momentum the project has had since. The playwright started his TV writing career on the MTV series “Awkward” and “Scream,” before joining the writing staff of “Supernatural” for four seasons. His latest series, the Sandman universe adaptation “Dead Boy Detectives,” will premiere on Netflix in April.

Paramount is also developing a separate “Star Trek” project, with writer Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) and director by Toby Haynes (“Black Mirror: USS Callister”), that would feature a new cast in a story meant as a kind of origin story for the franchise. A project with screenwriter Kalinda Vazquez (“Fear the Walking Dead”) first announced in 2021 also remains in development.

Palm Sunday commemorates the Christian belief in the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, when he was greeted by cheering crowds waving palm branches that they set out on the ground along his path, according to the Bible.

This year, Palm Sunday falls on March 24. Also known as Passion Sunday, it marks the start of Holy Week. The most sacred week of the Christian year includes the Good Friday re-enactment of Jesus’ crucifixion story and death, and their belief in his resurrection on Easter.

Here is a quick look at Palm Sunday’s significance.

IS THERE A DONKEY IN THIS STORY?

The procession of Jesus into Jerusalem is described by the four Gospel writers in the Bible.

The Gospels differ, but based on one expert they agree on this: Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey — or a colt. So, which one is it?

Colt is defined as “a young male horse that is usually not castrated.” But in the Bible, the word meaning “colt” is used almost exclusively for young donkeys, not horses, writes Joanne M. Pierce , professor emerita of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross.

Pierce writes that this brings to mind a reference from the Book of Zechariah in Jewish scriptures, where the prophet describes a victorious king who enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey.

In Judaism, she says, the passage from Zechariah refers to the Messiah , a spiritual king who would peacefully redeem Israel, and the donkey is interpreted as a sign of humility .

“In Christianity, this animal becomes almost a symbol of Christ himself, given how it patiently suffers and bears others’ burdens,” Pierce writes in a piece published by The Conversation . “Horses, on the other hand, tend to be associated with royalty, power and war.”

WHAT ABOUT THE PALMS?

In the biblical Palm Sunday story, a cheering crowd greeted Jesus along the road. Some spread their garments on the ground; others threw down leafy branches they had cut from the fields. In the Gospel of John, they are branches from palms, a tree that symbolized victory and triumph.

In the Gospel of Matthew, people began to shout: “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” The word “Hosanna” was a plea for salvation and an exclamation of adoration.

After the procession, the Bible says Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple.

HOW IS PALM SUNDAY CELEBRATED?

The ritual or liturgy typically starts with a blessing of the palms by clergy. It’s followed by a reading of the Passion of Christ, meaning an account of the final events of Jesus’ life.

Some ceremonies in German-speaking countries used to include a figure of Jesus riding a donkey, Encyclopedia Britannica says . The figure is called a “ Palmesel ,” or German for “palm donkey,” according to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, which on its site recounts how worshippers would lay palms on the ground before the Palmesel during lively processions.

Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land mark Palm Sunday by holding Masses and processions retracing Jesus’ triumphal entry. Worshippers carry palm fronds and olive branches and march from the top of the neighboring Mount of Olives to Jerusalem’s historic Old City, home to holy sites of the three Abrahamic monotheistic faiths.

In churches around the world, the palms are often taken home by congregants, and some will become ashes.

HOW DO THE PALMS TURN INTO ASHES?

Ashes can be purchased, but some churches make their own by burning the palms from prior years.

They’re used to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday , the solemn day of fasting and reflection that signals the start of Christianity’s most penitent season.

NC State advances to first Final Four since 1983: DJ Burns leads 11 seed to Elite Eight upset of 4-seed Duke

The wolfpack's magical postseason run will continue to the final four after a 76-64 win vs. duke in the south regional final.

DALLAS -- No. 11 seed NC State is dancing its way to the Final Four for the fourth time in school history and first time since 1983 after upsetting ACC rival and crosstown rival Duke in a 74-64 thriller in the Elite Eight on Sunday. The Wolfpack trailed the majority of the game but chipped away at the margin as the game went on before opening up a double-digit lead and busting it wide open in the final minutes.

NC State star DJ Burns Jr. had a career performance and an all-time March Madness moment with 29 points to lead the Pack past No. 4 seed Duke. Burns had a strong eight points in the first half but took over in the second half as Duke struggled to defend his size.

Blue Devils star Kyle Filipowski fouled out of the game with 4:52 remaining after briefly flirting with foul trouble with four fouls. Mark Mitchell and Ryan Young primarily drew defensive duties on Burns in his absence, and neither could keep in front of his burly frame and sweet feet.

NC State's dream run to the Final Four almost didn't happen at all after a 9-11 finish to ACC play in the regular season. The Wolfpack then won five games in five days in the ACC Tournament to earn the league's automatic NCAA Tournament berth before winning three of its four March Madness games as an underdog.

Wolfpack keeps winning in March 

Around this time three weeks ago, NC State looked like they were heading toward the NIT. The Wolfpack had just dropped their fourth straight game to close the regular season and needed an improbable run at the ACC Tournament to advance to the Big Dance. NC State proceeded to win five games in five days to secure the automatic bid and then knocked off No. 6 seed Texas Tech, No. 14 seed  Oakland, No. 2 seed Marquette and No. 4 seed Duke in the NCAA Tournament to reach the Final Four for the first time since 1983. The Wolfpack are the sixth No. 11 seed since 1979 to advance to the national semifinals.  

The legend of Burns grows

Burns is becoming a March Madness legend before our eyes. The NC State star began his career at Tennessee before transferring to Winthrop after his freshman season. He played three seasons with the Eagles before transferring a third time at his final stop: NC State. Burns plays with a passionate fire that energizes teammates. He's also extremely hard to stop down low. Burns will likely get the Zach Edey assignment when NC State faces Purdue next weekend. If NC State is going to slow down the reigning national player of the year, it starts with Burns staying out of foul trouble. That gives NC State the best chance of pulling off another upset.  

Duke's McCain shines, Proctor struggles

McCain routinely played like Duke's best player in the final two months of the regular season. He was also the best player on the floor for the No. 4 seed throughout the NCAA Tournament. McCain finished with 32 points and connected on 5 of 11 attempts from distance. It's very likely that McCain at least puts his name in the 2024 NBA Draft, where he projects as a first-round pick. McCain's backcourt mate, Proctor, had a game to forget. Proctor finished with zero points and missed all nine of his field-goal attempts. Throughout the season, Proctor disappeared in big moments, and this was the latest example of it. Proctor projects as a first-round pick this summer, and his stay-or-go decision will loom large for the Blue Devils' program.  

NC State upsets Duke, advances to Final Four

The final ticket to the Final Four has been punched. No. 11 seed NC State advanced to its first Final Four since 1983 with a 76-64 win over No. 4 seed Duke in the South Regional final. The Wolfpack will face No. 1 seed Purdue in the national semifinals next Saturday. 

NC State, the final double-digit seed remaining in the NCAA Tournament, continued its improbable run with its ninth consecutive win in an elimination game dating back to the ACC Tournament earlier this month. The Wolfpack had to win five games in five days to receive the automatic bid in the ACC Tournament fbefore winning four games the last two weeks to advance to the fourth Final Four in program history.

NC State star big man DJ Burns Jr. scored 29 points and DJ Horne added 20. The Wolfpack erased a nine-point deficit late in the first half and shot 19 of 26 (73.1%) from the floor after halftime. Duke was limited to 5 of 20 shooting from beyond the arc and star guard Tyrese Proctor was held to zero points.
