Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 review

The canon imageprograf pro-300 13-inch printer takes a3+ photo printing to a new level.

5 Star Rating

Digital Camera World Verdict

We’ve always been very impressed with Canon’s 13-inch PIXMA PRO-10S pigment-based photo printer. The new imagePROGRAF PRO-300 offers even more. With upgraded LUCIA PRO inks, a 3-inch color menu screen, advanced companion software, the PRO-300 also enables borderless printing on matte and fine art media, instead of just glossy photo paper. It’s a real printing powerhouse.

Sumptuous print quality on both glossy and matte media

Superb black & white performance, along with vibrant colour

Handy companion software for soft proofing and hard proofing

As expected, print speeds are a little pedestrian compared with some dye-based printers

Borderless printing on matte media isn’t risk-free

Why you can trust Digital Camera World Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out how we test.

Specifications

Key features, build and handling, performance.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is a high quality A3+ photo printer, with a 13-inch printing width, designed to deliver fabulous looking output on both glossy and matte media. It replaces the PIXMA PRO-10S in Canon's printer lineup - a printer we already rate as one of the best photo printers - and it slots in below the larger, A2 format imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 large-format printer .

The two main choices for inkjet printers at this price point are dye-based or pigment-based inks. Dye-based printers are typically faster and work better with glossy photo paper, because the ink molecules are small enough to get fully absorbed beneath the shiny outer surface of the paper. Pigment-based inks work better with matte and fine-art media, as the results tend to look better and the ink is more robust and resistant to fading.

• See also Best Canon printers

Whichever ink option you choose, the sheer amount of fine detail in a printed A3 or 13x19-inch photo can be astonishing, with much more wow-factor than an A4 print. It enables you to print photos big enough to frame and hang on the wall, right from your own desktop.

Model name: Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 (Canon Pixma Pro-200 in Australasia)

Maximum paper width:  13 inches

Max print size: A3+, 13x19 inches

Max print resolution: 4800x2400dpi

The key to these Canon printers’ success in outputting top-quality results on both glossy and matte media is that they feature a ‘chroma optimizer’, contained in its own cartridge. This smooths out the finish when printing on glossy photo paper, so that there’s no difference in the reflectivity of different colors and tones. The ink range itself is very comprehensive, with ten separate cartridges in total. As well as the chroma optimizer, you get both matte and photo black inks, cyan, photo cyan, magenta, photo magenta, yellow, grey and red inks. They’re all from Canon’s latest LUCIA PRO line-up, giving the potential for a wide gamut (color space) with rich, vivid color rendition, as well as high-fidelity black & white photo printing.

Unlike Epson ’s older SureColor SC-P600 13-inch pigment-based printer, the Canon includes dedicated channels for both photo black and matte black in its print head. This avoids the need to waste time, ink and therefore money, when switching between glossy and matte media.

With the print head installed, you can insert the ten individual cartridges. These include nine 14ml pigment-based ink cartridges and one 14ml ‘chroma optimizer’ cartridge.

Like the PRO-10S, the PRO-300 runs on cartridges that have a 14ml capacity. This should prove sufficient for around 30 to 60 borderless A3+ prints from each cartridge, although it naturally varies depending on the prominent colors and densities within your images. Ink costs typically average out to around $2.75/£3.70 per borderless A3+ photo print, which is pretty reasonable. Like most inkjet printers, the PRO-300 is supplied with ‘setup cartridges’ but, unlike with some printers, these have plenty of stamina instead of running dry after just a few prints.

An unusual feature of the PRO-300 is that it can create borderless prints on matte and fine-art media, rather than just on glossy photo paper. This can be a huge advantage but you need to disable the ‘safety margin regulation for paper size’ option, which is enabled by default in the printer driver. Indeed, Canon warns that ‘depending on the environment, conditions such as paper abrasion may cause paper stains or deterioration of print quality’. That said, we created a dozen or so borderless A3+ photo prints on Premium Matte photo paper and Premium Fine Art Smooth media with no ill effects.

Another bonus is that the printer caters to a wide range of media. This includes not only Canon’s impressive catalogue of fine-art papers, but also media from independent manufactures including the likes of Hahnemuhle, Canson and Awagami. What’s more, Canon’s Professional Print & Layout software is available as a free download, which works as a standalone app or as a plug-in for Canon Digital Photo Professional and Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop . This enables both soft proofing and hard proofing for different paper types, as well as giving you the option of applying individual adjustments to separate images that will be printed on the same page.

Canon’s Professional Print & Layout software is available as a free download, and works well for soft proofing and hard proofing, as well as for creating multi-image layouts.

Weighing in at 14.4kg, the PRO-300 is no lightweight. It has a really solid chassis and build quality feels excellent throughout. Handling is enhanced by the inclusion of both a top feeder and a manual rear feeder. As well as catering to a range of popular print sizes, the printer can also output panoramic prints of up to 990.6cm in length. Another handling upgrade over the older PRO-10S is that the PRO-300 features a 3-inch color LCD screen. This comes complete with an adjacent set of navigation buttons, making it easy to set-up paper types for each feed path, as well as for carrying out routine maintenance and keeping an eye on ink levels.

The 3-inch color LCD gives a constant indication of the ink levels for each separate cartridge, while the adjacent buttons enable use of the printer’s menu system.

Connectivity is good, with built-in Wi-Fi and ethernet as well as a high-speed USB port. A raft of cloud-based printing options includes AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Windows 10 Mobile, Canon Print Service and PIXMA Cloud Link. The printer is pretty quiet in operation at around 40dB (A) and a ‘Quiet’ mode is also available via the menu system.

You’ll need to install the print head (shown upper left) during the setup procedure, which slots in and is clamped in place with a locking lever.

Print quality is absolutely outstanding. Color rendition is very rich and vibrant but also very true to life. The soft proofing and hard proofing facilities available in the companion Professional Print & Layout software make it easy to get exactly the results you want on different media, without wasting ink and paper. Black & white photo quality is equally as impressive as color output, with superb tonal definition and richness.

Print quality is simply superb for both mono and colour photos, on glossy, matte and fine-art media.

When you’re creating prints to last a lifetime, it seems a bit churlish to criticise a printer for a lack of speed. Indeed, any desktop printer is going to be a lot faster than ordering prints online and waiting for them to turn up in the post. Even so, if you need to create several prints in a hurry, speed can be an issue. Print speeds are very similar to those of the PRO-10S, which aren’t anywhere near as quick as for most dye-based printers, but still pretty nippy for a pigment-based printer.

An A3+ borderless print on glossy paper in the highest quality setting takes around 9m 30s for color, and about a minute less for black & white. At the standard quality setting, the same color print takes just 6m 30s to output. Top-quality borderless color output on A3+ Premium Fine Art Smooth takes longer, at just over 12m, whereas smaller A3 prints with a white border take around 10m 20s (Premium Fine Art Smooth) or 6m 50s (Premium Matte). For A4 borderless output on glossy paper, you’re looking at about 4m 30s in highest quality mode, and 3m 20s in standard mode.

image pro 300

There’s a lot to be said for retaining full control over your images at every step of the process, from initial capture, through editing, to final output in print. Canon’s imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is the perfect tool for the job. It’s capable of spectacular and entirely consistent print quality, while the soft proofing and hard proofing facilities of its companion Professional Print & Layout software help to ensure that you get exactly the results you want. Considering the feature set, build quality, handling and performance, the printer is a great buy at the price, and its running costs are competitive as well. All in all, it’s a fabulous piece of kit.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Printer Review

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Picture

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is an inkjet print-only unit designed for professional photo printing. Unlike most general-purpose inkjet office printers, it uses a total of ten ink cartridges, including a Chroma Optimizer, which coats and seals photos to improve longevity and shine. It connects via USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet, supports Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service, and is compatible with Canon's PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY mobile app.

Our Verdict

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is okay for family use. It has wide connectivity options, making it easy for every household member to access. It produces amazingly sharp documents as well as detailed and colorful photos; however, it's rather slow, so it isn't ideal for high-volume printing. It doesn't yield many black prints, meaning you'll have to replace the black cartridge often, and while its color page yield is better, color ink cartridges are expensive, so it can get very expensive to maintain if you print a lot. It also lacks a scanner and doesn't support automatic duplex printing.

  • Produces detailed and colorful photos.
  • Offers great built-in maintenance programs.
  • Very low cost-per-print for black-only printing.
  • Wide connectivity options.
  • Extremely slow print speed.
  • No scanner.
  • Low black page yields.
  • Color printing is expensive.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is sub-par for home office use. It doesn't have a scanner, and it can't perform automatic duplex printing, so you'll have to flip the pages manually when printing double-sided. Also, it takes over a minute to produce the first page of a document, and subsequent pages aren't much faster.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is okay for student use. Its black page yield isn't very high, but since its ink is relatively cheap to replace, the cost-per-print remains decent. For photography or graphic design students, it has excellent color accuracy and produces outstanding photos. Unfortunately, it takes over a minute to produce the first page, and subsequent pages don't print much faster. It also lacks a scanner for digitizing class notes or other documents.

  • Excellent color accuracy.
  • Feature-rich mobile app.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is inadequate for black and white printing as it's designed to produce photos. It has a poor black page yield and prints slowly, with the first page taking well over a minute to come out. That said, it does feel well-built, and its cost-per-print for black-only documents is low.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is an excellent photo printer. It produces outstanding, high-quality photos with very clear details and accurate colors. Also, it supports wide format paper up to 13" x 19". Unfortunately, while its ink cartridges yield a good number of color prints, they're expensive, so it can be very costly to maintain over time if you print a lot. Lastly, it prints very slowly, taking well over two minutes to print a 4" x 6" photo.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

We tested the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 printer in black. There are no other variants.

You can see our unit's label  here .

Compared To Other Printers

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is a professional photo printer. It has built-in features you won't find on lower-end, casual photo printers, like automatic skew detection, which will keep photos and documents from coming out at an angle, and what Canon advertises as a "Nozzle Recovery System," which allows the printer to keep printing even if a printhead becomes clogged. It also comes with a proprietary "Chroma Optimizer" cartridge, which is supposed to enhance the shine and longevity of a print. However, it prints very slowly and lacks a scanner.

For more options, check out our recommendations for the best photo printers , the best 11x17" printers , and the best Canon printers .

The Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 and the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 are both excellent photo printers. The Canon prints higher-quality documents and photos with better color accuracy and finer details. However, the Epson is more versatile because it has a scanner, and its ink tank yields more prints, resulting in a significantly lower cost per print.

The Canon PIXMA TR8620 and the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 are inkjet printers with different features. The imagePROGRAF is designed for high-quality photo printing, producing much higher-quality photos with more accurate-looking colors. Also, it has a wider range of colors it can produce. On the other hand, the PIXMA has an overall cheaper cost-per-print and significantly better print speeds. Since it's meant to be a home office printer, it also has a high-resolution scanning bed with an automatic document feeder.

The Canon PIXMA TR8520 and the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 are both inkjet printers, but they have different features. The PIXMA is an all-in-one unit with a scanner and automatic document feeder that performs well for home office use. It has slightly better color page yields, significantly faster print speeds, and a lower cost-per-print. On the other hand, the imagePROGRAF produces much higher quality photos, has a wider color range, and prints much more accurate-looking colors. Also, it can print tabloid-sized documents and photos.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 and the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-7310 are both printer-only models that support up to 13" x 19" sheets. The Epson is a better printer for small or home offices thanks to its substantially faster printing speeds, allowing it to print even the longest documents without having to wait long. On the other hand, the Canon is far better for photo printing, as it produces much better-detailed photos and significantly more accurate colors, and its color gamut is far wider, able to precisely reproduce a greater number of colors. It also has a much better color page yield, allowing you to go longer periods without replacing the cartridges.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is a professional-grade photo printer with a 10-cartridge system, while the Canon IVY Mini Photo Printer is a compact, battery-powered photo printer that easily produces casual prints from your smartphone. The imagePROGRAF is far superior for photo printing, as it produces superbly detailed photos with no banding, amazingly accurate colors, and an outstanding color gamut. Also, it has significantly more connectivity options. On the other hand, the IVY performs much worse on paper, but the quality of its 2" x 3" prints and its method of use might appeal to people who want a simple-to-use photo printer that you can bring along on the go.

Test Results

perceptual testing image

The Canon PRO-300's build quality in outstanding. It has a solid-feeling plastic body with an output tray that feels sturdy even when fully extended. Though the printer needs to be on to change the ink cartridges, it offers easy access to them under the front panel. You can also easily access paper jams through the same panel. Additionally, the rollers in the rear paper trays are very easy to get to should you need to manually clean them. It doesn't have a dedicated paper tray; it only has a top feeder tray and a manual feeder tray in the rear.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 ISO View Picture

Although the printer is a bit large when in use as you need to extend the top rear feeder out, it's relatively compact when you tuck the feeder back in, making it much easier to store.

As this is an inkjet printer, there's a risk of the printheads clogging if you don't use the printer for a long time. If you experience clogging or other print quality issues, there are built-in maintenance functions that can help resolve them, like printhead cleaning, printhead alignment, roller cleaning, and bottom plate cleaning. Canon advertises that there's an automatic "Nozzle Recovery System" that will automatically activate when a clog is detected so that you can continue printing.

You can see the user manual here .

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Display Screen Picture

The Canon PRO-300 has a very good display. Although it isn't touch-sensitive, you can easily navigate the settings menu using the button controls on the right-hand side.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Cartridge Picture In The Printer

The Canon PRO-300's black page yield is low, but its color page yield is pretty good. However, there are some big differences in yields across colors. For example, the yellow ink produced around 20 pages, while Cyan produced 81, meaning you'll likely have to replace the yellow cartridge sooner than others, especially if you print images that use that color more frequently. Unfortunately, there aren't any XL cartridges to improve the yield. If you want a photo printer with better page yields, check out the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 .

The Canon has specialized cartridges for printing on photo paper that aren't used during print jobs on non-photo paper. There's also a specialized cartridge called the "Chroma Optimizer," which Canon claims coats and seals photos for improved longevity and shine.

The Canon PRO-300 doesn't have a scanner.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 B&W Document Picture

The Canon PRO-300 prints black and white documents exceptionally well. It reproduces text and small details clearly, with no artifact or banding. It only has trouble converting the color yellow to grayscale, although that's normal for most printers.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Color Document Picture

The print quality for color documents is outstanding. Text looks clear, and finer elements come through properly, albeit a little faint. The most notable quality is the cleanliness of the print, as there are no artifacts or banding whatsoever.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Printer Total Cost

The Canon PRO-300's overall cost-per-print is decent. Although black-only printing is cheap, color printing is very expensive due to the high cost of color cartridges. That said, you can get individual color cartridges instead of buying them all at once, so you can just replace the cartridges as they run out, which might be easier on the wallet. At the time of writing, this printer isn't available for an automatic ink subscription.

The Canon PRO-300 prints very slowly, whether you're printing documents or photos. It also takes a long time to initialize and get a single page out. It can't print double-sided sheets automatically, so you'll have to flip the pages yourself when prompted.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Parrots Picture

The Canon PRO-300 has an outstanding color gamut. It can reproduce a wide range of colors, and it handles color transitions well, with no banding and minimal grain. It struggles a little with the very bright, saturated greens, blues, and purples, but it's still better than most general-purpose office and home printers.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Friends Picture

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300's color accuracy is excellent. Most colors inaccuracies are very minor and hard to notice, making this printer suitable for professional image printing.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Small Details Photo

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 reproduces small details exceptionally well. Finer elements look clear, and while the use of halftones (dot effect) is visible zoomed in, it's significantly better and less distracting than what you would get on most all-purpose inkjet printers.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Inputs Picture

The Canon Print Inkjet/SELPHY app is excellent. You can use it to print, copy, scan, and order ink right from your mobile device. You can also make minor edits to photos or disk labels using the Canon Easy-Photo Print Editor app.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is compatible with the most commonly-used operating systems. You need to download and install drivers on Windows and macOS, but not on Chrome OS. You can find the drivers here .

Canon imageprograf pro-300.

image pro 300

The imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is a very capable A3+ printer that should meet the needs of most serious enthusiasts who don’t need to make prints larger than 329 x 483 mm.

Simple to set up and easy and reliable to operate, it produces admirable output quality. The 14 ml ink tanks mean it’s not cost-effective for high-volume output.

Full review

The latest model in Canon’s imagePROGRAF PRO series was announced on 9 July, offering a similar workflow and print quality to the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000  in a more compact A3+ model with a slightly different ink set, while still sticking with LUCIA PRO pigment inks. The imagePROGRAF PRO-300 will replace the PIXMA PRO-10S and become a new entry model to Canon’s imagePROGRAF PRO series.  With a significantly smaller footprint, the PRO-300 provides a number of performance and output quality improvements over the previous model.

Features of the PRO-300 include bundled, easy-to-use software, new photo and matte black inks that produce deeper and more vivid blacks on glossy and fine art media and separate nozzles for photo and matte black inks. The printer automatically chooses the correct ink based on the paper loaded, saving time and reducing ink consumption, while Canon’s L-COA PRO processor can calculate the optimal ink droplet layout to ensure optimal output quality plus fast printing speeds.

The PRO-300 supports borderless printing in all print modes at the highest quality on a wide variety of media, including fine art paper, another improvement on the PIXMA PRO-10S. Custom paper sizes can be set with lengths up to 990.60 mm for printing panoramic images. Profile support is provided for Canon and third-party papers.

The 3-inch colour LCD shows the operational status (including ink levels for each tank) as well as menu items and messages. It’s not touch-sensitive so users must scroll through items with the arrows on the arrow pad. A Home button is provided for restoring the default status display, with a Back button below it to return to the previous screen. Extended control is available via functions provided in the printer driver when the printer is linked with a computer.

Canon’s Professional Print & Layout software is bundled with the imagePROGRAF PRO-300. It’s usable as standalone software, or as a plugin through Canon’s Digital Photo Professional imaging software or Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. This application covers settings like colour management, profiling selection and layout settings that include split gallery wrap printing and panoramic printing. Using this software, photographers can access the soft proofing and hard proofing functions to ensure precise colour matching from screen to print. The imagePROGRAF PRO-300 can connect with PC or Mac operating systems via a Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB connection to support multiple workflows.   It can also work seamlessly with Canon’s EOS camera technology and supports functions such as DPRAW Prini and HDR Print, which can read the RAW image data from EOS cameras and accurately render sharp areas in an image, as well as recover highlights from single exposures.

Who’s it For? The imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is designed to appeal to professional and enthusiast photographers, small studios and photo labs. Operators of camera shops could find this model attractive since it supports panorama printing and can be used to print on canvas media, although it can be difficult to find rolls at the 13-inch (329 mm) width.

image pro 300

Photography schools may also see this printer as a worthwhile investment and its compact size and easy set-up could enable operators of tourist facilities to gain extra revenue through selling poster-sized prints of customers enjoying their facilities. Its relatively small footprint makes it an easy fit in most typical working environments.

What’s in the Box? The PRO-300 comes in a cardboard box that is 725 mm long, 465 mm deep and 335 mm in height. The printer itself has a footprint of  639 x 368 x 196.5 mm and weighs 14.4 kg. Included in the box you’ll find 10 individual ink tanks (the full 14 ml capacity in their normal packages), the user-replaceable print head, a power cord, a CD printing tray, a software CD-ROM (Windows only; MacOS drivers are available online) and a printed 12-page starter guide.

The contents of the box are packed in Styrofoam, which is split to enable the top sections to be removed. The printer comes in a heavy-duty plastic bag with handles at each end and is strong enough to hold the printer while you lift it onto the desktop. It’s easy enough to remove the bag and foam sheeting by lifting each end of the printer and pulling the packaging out together before taking off the strips of orange tape and plastic mouldings that keep everything in place while the printer is in transit. Like the PRO-1000, the Pro-300 is essentially a rectangular box when the coverings are removed. But its footprint is almost 30% smaller.

Setting Up Allow at about half to three-quarters of an hour to make the printer ready for printing, following the instructions in the starter guide, which are similar to those provided for the PRO-1000. But, unlike the PRO-100, the ink tanks ride on top of the print head so the first step is to plug in the power cable, switch on the printer and install the print head.

image pro 300

Once this is done, each ink tank can be removed from its pack and clicked into the labelled slot on the print head. Closing the top cover completes this step and after the printer has made some initial adjustments – including agitating the ink – you will be ready to print.

image pro 300

At this stage it’s a good idea to load a couple of sheets of plain paper into the top feed chute and run a nozzle check to make sure all the inks are being used and output is up to scratch. Raise the upper support flap behind the rear tray load the paper in the centre of the chute, adjusting the guides until they touch the edges of the sheets. The front tray should also be lowered to receive the paper as it exits the printer.

image pro 300

You may also be required to print a head alignment test if the printer is brand new. These tests should only take a couple of minutes. You can then install the software and set up the printer’s connection method.

image pro 300

Although the printer comes with a software disk for Windows users, we found it easier to download the software from Canon’s website using the URL on page 7 of the starter guide – which will be required for MacOS users. Installing the printer driver takes several minutes and you’re given the option of continuing on to install other applications, such as the Professional Print & Layout software, which supports ICC profiles, lets users freely arrange images on roll paper, correct image tones and print B&W image with warm or cool tones.

image pro 300

Once the software is installed, you can connect the printer to your computer. No USB cable is supplied with the printer but any cable with a Standard A plug at one end and a Standard B plug at the other will be adequate. The screen below will be displayed showing the setup has been completed.

image pro 300

Unlike older printers which usually have three paper chutes, the PRO-300 has only two, a main top feed and a manual rear feed. Both have pull-out paper supports to help the media feed in correctly.

The top feed chute is a general-purpose feeder that accepts sheet sizes from 10 x 15 cm up to A3+ in size and up to 300 gsm in weight/thickness. It can accommodate up to 50 sheets of plain document paper, 10 sheets of A4 photo paper but only one sheet at a time for A3+ media.

The manual rear feed tray is for papers measuring 20 x 25 cm and larger. Accepting one sheet at a time, it should be used for thicker ‘fine art’ media up to 350 gsm or from 0.1 to 0.6 mm thick. Plain paper should not be fed in through this chute.

Using the LCD Control Panel  The printer’s control panel displays status messages and lets you access a number of functions. The arrow pad to its right is used for shifting between settings and selecting menu items or options. The menu is comprehensive enough to enable the printer to be operated as a stand-alone unit, although images to be printed would need to be supplied via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth since there’s no memory card slot.

image pro 300

At the top of the menu is an ink status display. Selecting this item enables you to check ink levels, view the ink tank replacement procedure, or check ink tank numbers.

image pro 300

Below it is a paper settings display that enables you to specify the size and type of paper loaded in the rear tray.  T he paper type menu contains a list of all the media for which ‘canned profiles’ are already installed in the printer.

image pro 300

Below the paper settings is the Maintenance tab, which covers all the usual checking, cleaning and alignment operations.

image pro 300

After the Maintenance tab comes the Template print tab, which enables users to produce lines or graph paper. It is followed by the LAN settings, which are used to setup the printer on a network.

image pro 300

The Various settings tab is next in line. It enables users to change various printer wettings and access Web service functions. It is followed by the Printer information tab, which displays printer information and error histories.

The final tab is the Quick guide, which combines information on the main aspects of operating the printer, such as loading paper and changing ink tanks. It also contains a QR code for accessing the more detailed online manual.

The Printer Driver The printer driver is essentially the same as Canon supplies with its PIXMA printers and covered in our review of the PIXMA iP8760 .  The only page with any differences is the fourth page (shown below), which has two click-on icons: Maintenance and Preferences and Update Media Information. Click on the Maintenance and Preferences icon and you open the standard maintenance function menu, as shown above.

image pro 300

Click on the Update Media Information icon and you open a dialog box (shown below) that lets you synchronise the media information in the driver and printer – should you feel a need to do so. (We only see a need for this if you’re printing directly from the printer rather than through an image editor.)

image pro 300

Borderless printing is available for the following output sizes: Letter (22 x 28 cm), 11” x 17” (279.4 x 431.8 mm), A4, A3, A3+, 10 x 15 cm, 13 x 18 cm, 18 x 25 cm, 20 x 25 cm, 210 x 594 mm, L 89 x 127 mm, 2L 127 x 178 mm, Square 13 x 13 cm, Square 30 x 30 cm, Hagaki (100 x 148 mm). It’s important to be aware that many of these paper sizes have different aspect ratios from those offered by today’s cameras so some image cropping will be applied.

We discovered an interesting aspect of borderless printing while checking out this function on the PRO-300: if you’re printing through an image editor and have set a scaled print size for a previous print, that size will be retained. This means when you make a borderless print the original may be cropped more (or sometimes less) than you expected.

image pro 300

You can control the degree to which an image is cropped and also the size of any white margins you wish to add around an image with the Scaled Print Size adjustment (circled in red) in the image editor’s software interface.

image pro 300

Like most photo printers, the PRO-300 includes a Custom Printer Paper Size setting that allows users to print on non-standard paper sizes, including long panoramas. It’s not available when the Borderless box is checked but when it’s unchecked paper widths can be set across a range of 89 to 330 mm and lengths between 127mm and 990.6 mm.

But you must allow for borders around the image. The printer will usually apply a 15 mm margin by default, although you can change this by cancelling the safety margin regulation by checking the Print Options box in the Page Setup section of the printer driver, as shown in the screen grab below.

image pro 300

You may also need to cancel the safety margins when printing on matte and fine art papers. We found it possible to make borderless prints on most media in these categories, although a warning appeared each time. It was also possible to print with very narrow margins (around 5 mm) without problems. In each case the paper must be absolutely flat with clean edges.

The printer was very quiet while running. We also encountered no paper feeding problems when using the top sheet feed chute. However, we were unable to get a sheet of canvas to feed in correctly via the rear feed slot, although we had no issues with printing on heavier papers when using this feed chute.

Printing Times Printing times depend upon a number of factors including the output size, quality setting, relative density of inks that will be used (high-key images use less ink and take less time to print than low-key images) and whether the image is the first to be printed in a sequence or in the middle. The first print in a sequence will usually involve a longer ‘spooling’ time (normally between 30 seconds and a minute but sometimes longer) while the printer organises the various settings.

In our tests we recorded the following average times for prints made with small (10 mm or less) margins and borderless prints: A4 prints at standard quality – 2 minutes 20 seconds at standard quality; 3 minutes 44 seconds at highest quality; HQ borderless prints averaged 4 minutes 40 seconds.

A3 prints at standard quality – 4 minutes 35 seconds at standard quality; 5 minutes 47 seconds at highest quality; HQ borderless prints averaged 6 minutes 18 seconds.

A3+ prints at standard quality – 4 minutes 44 seconds at standard quality; 7 minutes 8 seconds at highest quality; HQ borderless prints averaged 7 minutes 48 seconds.

Note that these are averages calculated over batches of between 10 and 30 prints.

Costs It‘s normal to expect running costs for printers that use small ink tanks to be relatively high, largely due to the costs of the tanks themselves. And the 14mm cartridges used by the PRO-300 are not designed for high-volume production printing. This printer is most suitable for relatively low-volume use by individual amateur photographers and, possibly also, camera clubs.

Purchasers of this printer should also note that many retail stores (particularly photo specialists) don’t keep replacement inks for this printer in stock so you’ll need to shop online. Price differences can be wide; with the highest we found listing individual tanks at AU$49 each and the lowest at AU$24.86. Most were between $25 and $29.

A couple of outlets were offering 10 ink packs for between $241 and $253, although these may not be such a good investment for individuals since inks will run out at different rates, depending on the colour biases of the images that are printed. It’s generally best to purchase inks as you need them and many online outlets will ship overnight.

We were unable to obtain precise ink costs because the printer we received had been used before it reached us and some ink tanks were depleted while others were at different levels, which made calculating their capacities almost impossible. However, on the basis of our usage, we estimate the average ink cost for an A4 print with 10 mm margins to be slightly less than AU$1.50, while for an A3 print with 15 mm margins it is between AU$3.00 and $3.10. An A3+ print with 15mm margins would use approximately AU$3.20-$3-30 worth of ink. All these figures assume a cartridge cost of between $25 and $29 each.

Costs for other media will vary with each paper type and should be easy to calculate on the basis of the cost of each sheet.   Like other Canon A3 printers, the PRO-300 can’t use roll paper, which limits its overall capabilities.

However, it does allow users to print with Custom sizes up to 330 x 990.6 mm, which provides some scope for panorama printing if you’re prepared to cut roll paper to a size between those limits. We found feeding long sheets of paper into the printer via the rear chute can be tricky, to say the least. Calculating media cost per print may also be difficult.

The canon imageprograf pro-300 is a class-leading 13-inch/a3+ photo printer. it’s immaculate on matte and fine art media and very good for glossy too..

5 Star Rating

Top Ten Reviews Verdict

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is as good as it gets for printing large-format color and black & white photos, at up to 13x19 inches/A3+ in size and for longer panoramic prints. It represents a major upgrade over Canon’s previous PIXMA PRO-10 model, ticking all the right boxes and more besides.

Superlative print quality on all kinds of media

Vibrant color, sumptuous black & white

Intuitive, genuinely useful companion software

Typically modest speed for a pigment-based printer

Borderless printing on matte paper isn’t risk-free

Ink cartridge capacity isn’t overly generous

The clue’s in the name. A cut above Canon’s PIXMA series printers, the imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is aimed at professional and enthusiast photographers who aspire to the absolute best in terms of print quality and archival life. This printer looks and feels the part, with fully pro-grade build quality and a really high-end finish, so it’s very much at home in a stylish photo studio.

Type: 13x19-inch/A3+ photo printer Other functions: None Color: Yes Max print size: 13x19-inch/A3+, 13x39-inch panoramic Display screen: 3.0-inch color LCD Connection type: Hi-Speed USB, Ethernet (10/100), Wi-Fi LCD preview screen: No Dimensions: 25.2x15x7.9 inches (closed) Weight: 31.6 lbs Warranty: 1-year limited warranty

Levels of fine detail and tonal range, especially in deep blacks, can look astonishing in large-format prints, compared with viewing photos on even a high-quality computer monitor. As a large-format 13x19-inch/A3+ printer, with larger panoramic output also available, the PRO-300 creates photo prints that are large enough to frame and hang on the wall, right from your own desktop, giving you full control over the whole process.

Building on the success of Canon’s PIXMA PRO-10 printer, the imagePROGRAF PRO-300 earns its stripes as a Canon professional printer with a reformulated range of nine LUCIA PRO pigment-based inks, plus a Chroma Optimizer that we’ll discuss later. Unlike some directly competing large-format pigment photo printers, including Epson models prior to the SureColor P700 and P900, the Canon has dedicated channels in its print heads for both photo black and matte black inks, so there’s no need to waste time and money purging a channel and recharging it with alternative ink every time you swap between matte and glossy photo paper.

Matthew has been testing and reviewing printers for computing and photography magazines and websites for more than 30 years. A qualified electronics engineer, he previously worked as a studio and broadcast engineer for the BBC, bringing a solid technical background to the subject. He has also worked as the head of the technical publications department for a company making world-leading studio recording consoles, which included in-house printing of technical and user manuals.

For this review, Matthew spent an extensive amount of time testing the printer, creating test prints for all the different modes and using his own test chart to reveal its accuracy.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300: Design

Designed as a fully pro-grade printer, the PRO-300 is built on a sturdy metal chassis. It’s reassuringly weighty at 31.6 pounds and the overall build quality feels rock-solid. Even so, it’s pretty compact for a 13-inch/A3+ printer, shaving 15 per cent off the size of the preceding PIXMA PRO-10 model.

To ensure ‘gallery quality’ output and the kind of longevity that professional photographers need when selling prints to clients, the PRO-300 uses pigment-based rather than dye-based inks. These ensure greater quality, robustness and archival life on matte and fine art media.

The flipside is that pigment inks don’t work as well on glossy photo paper, as the larger molecules aren’t fully absorbed beneath the protective, shiny top layer of the paper. The PRO-300 aims to address any shortcomings with the inclusion of a Chroma Optimizer cartridge, which is featured in addition to the nine pigment-based black, gray and color inks.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300: Features

A key feature of the PRO-300 is its Chroma Optimizer cartridge. This opens the door to top-quality output from a pigment-based ink line-up even on glossy photo paper, as well as generally favored matte and fine art media. It’s laid over the top of the ink to smooth out the finish on glossy photo paper, minimizing the difference in the reflectivity of different colors and tones, to avoid the usual bronzing effect.

The pigment-based ink range itself is very comprehensive, featuring both matte and photo black inks, cyan, photo cyan, magenta, photo magenta, yellow, gray and red inks. The line-up ensures a really wide gamut (or color space) along with exceptional fidelity for black & white photo printing. Both benefit from the inclusion of a reformulated matte black LUCIA PRO ink.

For paper handling, the PRO-300 features the usual upright feeder at the rear, which can accommodate popular sizes of photo paper from 3.5x3.5-inch to 13x19-inch formats. A secondary manual feeder at the rear ensures a flat transport path through the printer, as well as enabling you to create panoramic and banner prints of up to 39 inches in length.

Unlike previous Canon 13-inch/A3+ photo printers, the PRO-300 features a 3.0-inch color LCD screen. It’s not a touchscreen but the supporting pushbuttons enable quick and intuitive operation for adjusting print modes and settings for different paper types, running diagnostic checks and cleaning routines, and for keeping tabs on the print status and the amounts of ink remaining in the cartridges.

There’s a raft of other new features in the PRO-300, aiming to maximize performance, usability and reliability, which we’ll cover in the next section.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300: Setup and usability

Although hefty, the PRO-300 is easy to lift out of its box, thanks to being wrapped in a heavy-duty soft plastic bag complete with carrying handles. Setup is speedy and effortless, involving inserting the print head and ten individual cartridges, followed by an automated procedure to charge the head with ink and run a print head alignment routine.

The packaging is mostly recyclable and the printer comes complete with a setup CD, user manual and other supporting documentation. A sample pack of five sheets of either 8.5x11-inch or A4 Canon Photo Paper Pro Luster paper is included, depending on world region. A power cord is also supplied but, as usual, no USB or Ethernet connection cables. To ensure you have the latest printer drivers, it’s wise to download them from Canon’s website rather than relying on the setup CD, and that’s a no-brainer if your computer doesn’t actually feature a CD-ROM drive.

Once you’ve installed the printer, usability is excellent and long-term reliability proved faultless in our long-term tests. The printer makes good use of Canon’s L-COA PRO high-precision software engine, which runs high-speed processing for high volumes of image data, translating it to printing data that organizes the optimal ink layout throughout the whole process.

Throughout our testing, we never suffered from blocked ink nozzles causing feint lines across prints. The print head actually has a lot of redundancy built in and the system is sufficiently ‘intelligent’ to keep a check on nozzles so, if one becomes blocked for any reason, adjacent nozzles are called into action instead and the blocked nozzles have an ‘auto recovery system’. There’s similarly good news when it comes to the paper transport system, which features automatic skew correction to ensure that paper is perfectly aligned as it passes through the printer.

Connectivity options are plentiful, including high-speed USB and Ethernet ports, and extending to built-in Wi-Fi. The free Canon Print app enables printing from mobile devices, as well as adjusting and checking various printer settings and ink levels. The PRO-300 is also fully compatible with Apple AirPrint and Mopria for Android, so you can print from the cloud without the need to install a driver. Printing via wireless PictBridge is also supported for compatible cameras.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300: Print quality

To cut to the chase, print quality is absolutely spectacular. Color rendition is very rich and vibrant but entirely true to life, able to recreate the subtlest of graduations in everything from skin tones to architectural and landscape images. Black & white photo print quality is arguably even more magnificent, with stunning tonal definition and richness. Canon actually reformulated its matte black ink for the PRO-300 and the result is a depth and detail in very dark areas of prints, the likes of which we’ve not seen before.

Thanks to the enhanced precision of the paper transport system, you can create borderless prints on matte and fine-art media, instead of just on glossy, semi-gloss and luster photo papers. However, it’s not enabled by default and you’ll need to disable the ‘safety margin’ in the printer’s settings. Canon warns there might be some deterioration of print quality or staining around the edge of the paper but we suffered no ill-effects whatsoever when creating borderless A3+ prints on Canon’s Premium Matte photo paper and Premium Fine Art Smooth media.

For discerning professional and amateur photographers, it’s important to be able to create the right look and feel for a top-quality print by using the best choice of paper. The PRO-300 directly supports a vast range of media, not just from Canon but also from independent brands of fine art media including the likes of Hahnemühle, Canson and Awagami.

Optimizing print quality further still, Canon’s Professional Print & Layout software is available as a free download, which works as a standalone program or as a plug-in for Canon Digital Photo Professional and Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. It gives the benefit of both soft proofing and hard proofing for different paper types, as well as giving you the option of applying individual adjustments to separate images that will be printed on the same page. A particularly useful feature of the software is that you can create ‘pattern prints’, with subtly different treatments of color, tone, brightness and contrast, so that you can pick your favorite option for creating the final print.

In our print speed tests, we found that A3+ borderless prints on glossy paper at the highest quality setting took around 8 minutes 39 seconds for black & white, and about 9 minutes 30 seconds for color. At the standard photo quality setting, the same color print took just 6 minutes 30 seconds. A top-quality borderless A3+ color print on Premium Fine Art Smooth media took longer, at just over 12 minutes.

Smaller A3 prints with a white border took around 10 minutes 20 seconds on the same fine art media, reducing to 6 minutes 50 seconds on Premium Matte photo paper. For A4 borderless output on glossy paper, you’re looking at about 4 minutes 30 seconds in highest quality mode, and 3 minutes 20 seconds in standard mode. All of these print times are actually pretty speedy for a pigment-based, large-format printer, but typically can’t compete with dye-based printers like the 13-inch/A3+ Canon PIXMA PRO-200.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300: Care and maintenance

Many inkjet printers need a fair bit of TLC. Blocked nozzles in the print head can cause feint lines across prints, ruining photographic output, and you can feel the need to run frequent nozzle check routines and cleaning cycles, which are wasteful in time, ink and money. We didn’t suffer any problems during extended, long-term testing of the PRO-300 and never once had problems with blocked nozzles.

That said, we did adopt a policy of turning the printer on every few days, after which it often runs its own automatic diagnostic routine and mini-cleaning cycle, if necessary. The PRO-300 looks and feels like it’s built to last and that was certainly our experience. If you do run into any problems, support is available via Canon’s website and the printer is backed by a 1-year warranty plus extended service options.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300: Price and availability

  • $849 / £699
  • 1-year limited warranty

Given the fully pro-spec build quality, features, reliability and performance of the PRO-300, it’s very good value for money at the price. Its most direct competitor to the Epson SureColor P700, which retails for a very similar $829/£679. But that’s not quite the whole story. Like the Epson and most other inkjet printers, the PRO-300 is sold with a single set of ‘setup cartridges’ but, unlike many, they have plenty of stamina instead of running dry after just a few prints. Suffice it to say that you shouldn’t have to buy any replacement cartridges in the very short term.

The PRO-300 runs on 14.4ml cartridges, each of which should last for around 30 to 60 borderless A3+ prints. Naturally, however, the actual number of prints available from any one cartridge can vary hugely depending on the specific colors and densities within your images, and therefore how much of each ink is actually used. Ink quantities can also vary considerably when using different types of glossy and matte papers. Even so, ink costs typically average around $2.75/£2.95 per borderless A3+ photo print, which is pretty reasonable for a 10-cartridge pro-grade photo printer.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300: User reviews

User reviews of the imagePROGRAF PRO-300 are almost universally very favorable. Customers tend to be highly impressed with the print quality on wide-ranging glossy, semi-gloss, luster and matte media. For example, at the time or writing this review, the B&H Photo retailer in the USA carried 79 user reviews, 69 of which gave the PRO-300 a maximum 5-star rating, along with a further seven 4-star reviews. At Amazon, there were 166 global customer reviews, with an 85 per cent top-score 5-star rating.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300: What the experts say

The imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is simply the best 13-inch/A3+ printer on the market for creating gallery quality photographs and reproductions of artworks. Even using the basic default print settings, color rendition and tonal range are exceptional and there’s direct support for a huge variety of top-quality fine art media from independent manufacturers, as well as for Canon’s own papers.

The depth and detail in really dark blacks is truly outstanding. The larger Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 17-inch/A2+ printer is also exceptional in this respect but the reformulated matte black ink of the PRO-300 gives it the edge.

While color rendition of color prints and the neutrality of black & white photo output is excellent, the advanced Canon Professional Print & Layout software, available free of charge, allows you to fine-tune the treatment of color, brightness and contrast. This makes it easy to tailor the results to your personal tastes, as well as to suit different display environments, for example when prints will be lit by daylight or relatively warm tungsten lighting. All in all, the PRO-300 is an amazing printer that’s backed up by really smart software.

Should you buy the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300?

If you’re in the market for a 13-inch/A3+ printer that will deliver best-in-class photographic output for both color and black & white images, as well as for reproducing artworks, you won’t find a better buy than the imagePROGRAF PRO-300. The only caveat is that, despite featuring a Chroma Optimizer cartridge, the dye-based Canon PIXMA PRO-200 delivers slightly smoother results on glossy photo paper and boasts significantly quicker print speeds.

Typical of dye-based printers, glossy prints from the PRO-200 are also touch-dry even as they land in the output tray, whereas prints from pigment-based printers need more drying time. Ultimately, the PRO-300 is much better if you’re likely to print on matte and fine art media, whereas the PRO-200 is a smarter choice for printing purely on glossy photo paper.

How does it compare to competitors?

The main competitor to the PRO-300 is the Epson SureColor P700 13-inch/A3+ pigment-based photo printer. For our money, the Canon wins out for print quality, overall performance and reliability, making it the best choice. In our tests, the Canon’s setup cartridges, supplied with the printer, also proved rather more long-lasting after the initial installation procedure, compared with the Epson.

For ongoing cartridge costs, the PRO-300’s 14.4ml cartridges cost around $13/£14 each, so the price of ink equates to about $0.90/£0.97 per milliliter. The Epson SureColor P700 has larger 25ml cartridges but they cost around $38/£27 each, making ink rather more expensive, especially in the USA, at $1.52/£1.08 per milliliter.

How we tested the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300

Our testing process begins with unpacking and setting up the printer. We download and install the latest versions of drivers, then run nozzle check routines and, if required, print head cleaning cycles. We then carry out print head alignment procedures to ensure optimum accuracy. The printer manufacturers’ genuine, own-brand inks and photo papers are used throughout the entire testing procedure.

We create test prints from a wide range of mono and color documents, digital photos, including landscapes, portraits, and black & white images. Prints are made using standard color modes as well as optional enhancement features, offered with the printer. We also use our own specially created test chart to reveal each printer's accuracy in terms of color reproduction, tonal range, and the ability to deliver smooth graduations between subtle color variations.

For output speed, we measure the time taken to produce borderless 6x4-inch, A4, A3 and A3+ prints at various photo quality settings, where available with each printer that we test.

Canon Pixma Pro-200 vs ImagePROGRAF PRO-300: Which Printer Should You Get?

Anabel author

With so many printer options, it can be difficult to figure out which is right for you. The Canon Pixma Pro-200 and Canon ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 are both brand-new models that seem similar in appearance but feature some essential differences.

Here is our comparison guide of these new printers, designed to help choose the printer that fits you best.

Loaded with features that will make any professional photographer drool, this new ImagePROGRAF PRO printer has it all.

Pixma vs ImagePROGRAF

Canon has divided its printers into several different lines, each intended to serve different users. To start off our comparison, let’s talk about the Pixma line versus the ImagePROGRAF line.

Canon PIXMA PRO-200 Wireless Professional Inkjet Photo Printer

Canon’s Pixma printers can be considered a best friend to anyone who needs printing done, from artists all the way to the everyday office worker. Originally, the Pixma series was a varied line that offered a slew of well-rounded features to appeal to most general users.

Eventually, the line began dividing into divisions such as the MG/MX/TR/TS Series, which are all-in-one printers (fax, scan, and print), and the iP Series, which are single-function printers. The Pro division of the line was designed specifically for photographers to print their work professionally at home.

The ImagePROGRAF line was always designed for imaging professionals such as photographers and graphic designers, and never really catered to anyone else.

These printers tend to include features heavily coveted by artists and that cater to their needs. The line is known for its large format printers and use in art galleries, but the ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 breaks this stereotype with its A3 size.

Both of these printers are fairly new additions to the Canon market, so you can rest assured that they are both equally powerful improvements over predecessors. Both are A3 and are touted as excellent photography printers!

It’s All About the Colors

When looking at printers for photographs, color accuracy becomes of the utmost importance. You want to ensure that the colors you see on your computer screen translate accurately to the printing medium. Color is also where these two printers differ the most, as the Pixma Pro-200 and ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 use different types of ink.

The Canon Pixma Pro-200 uses dye-based inks. Dye ink is a type of ink in which a color substance is dissolved into a liquid, which provides a wide color space. The caveat, however, is that, if your print comes into contact with water or moisture, the ink will come out. Dye inks are known for being vivid and colorful – hence the quality of the Canon Pixma Pro-200 prints.

Canon PIXMA PRO-200 Wireless Professional Inkjet Photo Printer

The Canon Pixma Pro-200 uses FINE (Full-Photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering; what a mouthful!) printhead in order to carefully place dots of color into the correct places, making for a brilliant color array in your photo prints. There are eight ink cartridges: cyan, magenta, yellow, black, photo cyan, photo magenta, light gray, and gray, which make for a great range of hues, tones, and saturations.

The Pixma Pro is missing Canon’s Chromatic clear coat, which lets you adjust how glossy or matte your prints are. As such, your prints do come out in only one type of sheen (which impacts how color is perceived by the viewer).

The Canon ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 uses pigment-based ink, a bit different from dye-based ink. Pigment-based ink works by suspending small color particles in a liquid, kind of like sand in water (where the sand particles float and do not dissolve). Pigment inks tend to be lighter than dye-based inks, but at the end of the day, both produce the same level of gorgeous vibrancy and consistency. The advantage of pigment ink, however, is that it will not falter in water. Pigment ink also produces a much more solid black, essential for black and white prints and images with lots of contrast. Generally speaking, pigment-based inks are considered significantly higher quality than dye inks.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Wireless Color Wide-Format Printer, Prints up to 13

The caveat here is that pigment inks are much more expensive than dye-inks. As such, the Canon ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 is more expensive to own; remember how I said that it’s oriented towards the professional photographer? There are ten ink cartridges in total, two more than the Canon Pixma Pro-200.

The Canon ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 does have the Chromatic clear coat, which allows you to make prints from matte all the way to ultra glossy (and everything in between!). As such, the colors tend to be much richer and brighter compared to other printers. This printer also uses the FINE printhead.

The differences between color rendering in these two printers would very likely fly right over the average person’s head; they won’t see a difference. But for us professional photographers who like to pixel peep even on physical mediums, the difference is noticeable. Bottom line: the Canon ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 generally has better color rendering than the Canon Pixma Pro-200.

Printing Speed

Although printing time doesn’t seem too significant when you just consider one sheet of paper, it makes a massive difference if you are printing multiple images at once!

Canon PIXMA PRO-200 Wireless Professional Inkjet Photo Printer

The Pixma Pro-200 is significantly faster than the ImagePROGRAF PRO-300. For comparison, the ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 prints a standard 8” x 10” print size in approximately 2 minutes and 45 seconds, while the Pixma Pro-200 prints the same size in 53 seconds. The Pixma Pro-200 takes 1 minute and 30 seconds to do an 11” x 14” print, while the ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 takes 2 minutes and 50 seconds to do the same thing.

Say you have to do a batch of twenty 8” x 10” prints for a client; with the ImagePROGRAF PRO-300, you’ll be sitting on your hands for nearly an hour! With the Pixma Pro-200, it’ll take you a little over 17 minutes. Not bad, right?

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Wireless Color Wide-Format Printer, Prints up to 13

Now, going back to the color rendering topic: there is a reason why one is significantly longer than the other. The ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 spends a lot more time on rendering proper colors and details than the Pixma Pro-200. That’s not to say that the Pixma Pro-200 does a bad job (it definitely doesn’t!) but the discerning professional will notice a difference.

Features and Ease of Use

Canon is known for packing as many features as possible into their products, and these printers are no different.

Both printers have built-in features to help prevent, or remedy, clogged nozzles. Clogged nozzles are the bane of any printer user’s existence, so this nifty feature is very helpful!

Both printers are touted to be easy to use, but printers are never without their headaches. The Pixma Pro-200 is supposed to be difficult to set up but easy to use, and the ImagePROGRAF Pro-300 is said to be easy to set up but more complicated to use. You win some, you lose some, I guess!

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Wireless Color Wide-Format Printer, Prints up to 13

Both printers have large screens to help navigate between menus and options. Both printers can also be controlled wirelessly.

However, the Pixma Pro-200 is lacking in actual printing features. The ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 has the ability to create much deeper and move prominent blacks (helping your prints pop) and even features a Black and White monochromatic mode. The  ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 can also handle far more paper types than the Pixma Pro-200, as the Pixma cannot print on canvas or thicker papers.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Wireless Color Wide-Format Printer, Prints up to 13

For extra fun, the ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 even has a tray to print CD tops!

Price and Running Costs

As with all printers, it’s not just the price of the unit you have to factor in; it’s the running costs, as well. These include the ink cartridges you will have to continuously purchase.

The Pixma Pro-200 is priced around $599, give or take, with dye-based inks that run about $1.05 per milliliter. You can buy the entire eight ink set for about $105.99, or each individual tank for $13.99.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 Wireless Color Wide-Format Printer, and Mobile Device Printing, Black with PFI-300 Lucia PRO Ink, 10 Ink Tanks

The ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 is a different story. With a starting price of $899 and pigment-based inks, the cost adds up fast. The inks run at around $122 for the full pack on a good day.

Which Printer Is Right for You?

As for what printer is right for you, it really depends on who you are as a photographer! Both are excellent printer choices that will serve most photographers quite well, and the layman likely won’t notice much of a difference in the final product.

However, it is clear that the Canon Pixma Pro-200 is more oriented toward the enthusiast or hobbyist photographer who also appreciates quality, while the Canon ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 is suited for professional photographers and photography studios. The Pixma Pro-200 has a lower base price and much lower running costs, yet it still produces beautiful prints to enjoy.

Thanks to its higher level of control plus better detail and color rendering, the ImagePROGRAF PRO-300 is more of a pro photographer’s dream. With the increased running costs in comparison to the Pixma Pro-200, a professional is more likely to make the money back and justify the spending.

What are the A paper sizes?

There are five common A paper sizes: A0 is 33.11 x 46.81 inches. A1 is 23.39 x 33.11 inches. A2 is 16.53 x 23.39 inches. A3 is 11.69 x 16.53 inches. A4 is 8.27 x 11.69 inches.

What’s the best format for your images to achieve great printed results?

In the editing room, convert your images to CMYK color format and change the resolution to 300 dpi or higher.

When printing black and white images, what mode should you use?

If the printer has a monochromatic mode, that would be the best one to use for black and white prints. If not, make sure to adjust the image file color to black and white.

Thanks, this was an excellent breakdown in who each of these printers were targeting and each of the printers unique qualities as well as pros and cons.

' src=

Great comparison. I’m getting the 300 thanks to your information. #simplesamphotos

' src=

Best comparison review on these two printers I’ve read. Thank you so much. Still haven’t decided between them BUT the 300 is back in the running!

' src=

Great reviews, thanks! We are a small publisher who needs to print sample covers to show our authors BEFORE we do a full galley sample.

I get that the Pro-300 has more realistic color and control over matte/glossy, but book printers are not nearly as photo-accurate as either of these (in my opinion).

We are leaning toward the Pro-200 at the moment. What do you think of that reasoning?

We had a Pro-1, but it just died.

' src=

Thanks for the comparison. One additional question. Which one of the printers can print (computer adapted portrait drawing) on drawing paper e.g. Schoellershammer Direct 200g/m2 or Steinbach Gallery 250g/m2? Or will the printerhead be damaged?

' src=

How often would I have to use each of these printers in order to prevent clogging?

The big fraud —

Deepfake scammer walks off with $25 million in first-of-its-kind ai heist, hong kong firm reportedly tricked by simulation of multiple people in video chat..

Benj Edwards - Feb 5, 2024 3:54 pm UTC

An illustration of six people doing a video teleconference on a laptop computer.

On Sunday, a report from the South China Morning Post revealed a significant financial loss suffered by a multinational company's Hong Kong office, amounting to HK$200 million (US$25.6 million), due to a sophisticated scam involving deepfake technology. The scam featured a digitally recreated version of the company's chief financial officer, along with other employees, who appeared in a video conference call instructing an employee to transfer funds.

Further Reading

Due to an ongoing investigation, Hong Kong police did not release details of which company was scammed.

Deepfakes utilize AI tools to create highly convincing fake videos or audio recordings , posing significant challenges for individuals and organizations to discern real from fabricated content.

This incident marks the first of its kind in Hong Kong involving a large sum and the use of deepfake technology to simulate a multi-person video conference where all participants (except the victim) were fabricated images of real individuals. The scammers were able to convincingly replicate the appearances and voices of targeted individuals using publicly available video and audio footage. The Hong Kong police are currently investigating the case, with no arrests reported yet.

The scam was initially uncovered following a phishing attempt, when an employee in the finance department of the company's Hong Kong branch received what seemed to be a phishing message, purportedly from the company’s UK-based chief financial officer, instructing them to execute a secret transaction. Despite initial doubts, the employee was convinced enough by the presence of the CFO and others in a group video call to make 15 transfers totaling HK$200 million to five different Hong Kong bank accounts. Officials realized the scam occurred about a week later, prompting a police investigation.

The high-tech theft underscores the growing concern over new uses of AI technology, which has been spotlighted recently due to incidents like the spread of fake explicit images of pop superstar Taylor Swift . Over the past year, scammers have been using audio deepfake technology to scam people out of money by impersonating loved ones in trouble.

Acting senior superintendent Baron Chan Shun-ching of the Hong Kong police emphasized the novelty of this scam, noting that it was the first instance in Hong Kong where victims were deceived in a multi-person video conference setting. He pointed out the scammer's strategy of not engaging directly with the victim beyond requesting a self-introduction, which made the scam more convincing.

The police have offered tips for verifying the authenticity of individuals in video calls, such as asking them to move their heads or answer questions that confirm their identity, especially when money transfer requests are involved. Another potential solution to deepfake scams in corporate environments is to equip every employee with an encrypted key pair, establishing trust by signing public keys at in-person meetings. Later, in remote communications, those signed keys could be used to authenticate parties within the meeting.

Additionally, the Hong Kong police plan to enhance their alert system covering the Faster Payment System (FPS) to include warnings for transactions linked to known scams, expanding the coverage to include a broader range of electronic and in-person transactions by the second half of the year.
