One kind of academic writing that involves far more visual consideration than essays and articles is the poster display. Along with the orally delivered conference paper, the poster display is a common way of presenting research results at conferences. Poster sessions are also used on some university courses as an alternative to essays or written exams.

In some respects, writing a poster text resembles article writing; many posters are presented according to the IMRaD format with an Introduction - Method - Results - Discussion structure. Of these, the Introduction and Results sections are generally the most important ones for the poster presentation. The poster writer thus faces the same challenges as the article writer in some respects:

  • The title needs to be attractive
  • The text structure must be logical
  • The argument has to be convincing

A poster is not an article

Whereas conference (paper) presentations demand a certain command of oral presentation technique, the requirements placed on poster presentations include visual aspects of the scientific results that are to be presented, as well as good writing skills. First and foremost, the poster must grab the reader's attention.

At large conferences, there may be hundreds of posters exhibited in large rooms, and a poorly presented poster will not receive much attention. Therefore, your poster texts need to be short and to the point, and your visual material must be well chosen and presented in order to enhance the argument and results you wish to communicate.

Poster design

Clarity is central for the layout and overall design. Although there are different ways of presenting scientific results graphically and although contents and individual preferences may, of course, to some extent determine the design of a poster, there are some general issues that should be taken into consideration.

Create a layout that is intuitive to the reader

The progression of the material presented in the poster must be clear; often poster texts are arranged either from left to right or from top to bottom, sometimes in columns. Different sections of the poster can be numbered or the reader can be guided by arrows or some other feature from one section to the next.

Make sure your text is easy to read

Your title and overall design must be clear to the reader at a distance of 2-3 metres. Choose an easy-to-read typeface and remember that a text in only capital letters is difficult to read. Aim for a title that is not too long or complex, and make sure all authors' names and affiliation(s) are clearly stated on the poster, as well as the name of any funding body, of relevant.

Balance text and illustrations

Aim to keep texts short and to the point. A poster should not be a display of text pages but should highlight and display vital and interesting results. It is better to write brief statements than long descriptive or argumentative texts. Concerning illustrations, aim for easily comprehensible graphic materials rather than illustrations that require explanatory texts. Too many colours and patterns will distract readers, as will too many pieces of separate text.

Making your poster

The advice below focuses on aspects of poster production that are connected with writing.

Check guidelines

Start by reviewing guidelines provided by the conference organizer. Also consider what kind of conference and poster session you are writing for. Is it a large conference covering several specialisations within your discipline or can you expect your audience to be familiar with your particular field?

Here we provide information on words often used in writing instructions:

  • Common terms in writing instructions

Find your focus

Similarly to paper or article writing, you need a clear focus for your poster:

  • What have you discovered?
  • Have you developed a new method?
  • Will you present new data?

With the limited space available, it is thus important to not try to bring up too many things. Although there may be room for some brief background information, the main focus of your poster should be on the new knowledge that you wish to share.

Presenting a poster

At many conferences, there are both oral presentations (often referred to as papers or talks ) and poster presentations. Sometimes conference papers are also presented as posters, but more often, conferences offer separate options for presentation.

In some conferences, posters are accompanied by short oral presentations often referred to as poster sessions.

For good poster examples from Lund University, see Scientific posters, examples (Swedish / English)

LU staff can download templates for research posters via the staff pages. If you are a student, follow guidelines from your teacher/supervisor.

The browser you are using is not supported by this website. All versions of Internet Explorer are no longer supported, either by us or Microsoft (read more here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/windows/end-of-ie-support ).

Please use a modern browser to fully experience our website, such as the newest versions of Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Safari etc.

The logotype is the single most important signifier of the University’s identity in our graphic profile and should always be included when Lund University is the sender. Here you will find information on where to download the logotype, which versions are available and how they may be used.

Producing one’s “own” logotypes is not permitted. If you have questions about this, if you want to apply for sub-logotype (see description below) or for the right to individual profiling (separate graphic profile), contact the Branding Office at Corporate Communication or send an email to grafiskprofil [at] kommunikation [dot] lu [dot] se

Logotypes in the Image and Media Bank

Logotype versions

Basic version.

Lund University’s logotype, consisting of the text Lund University and the seal, is available in three approved basic versions, in Swedish and English. The two-line centred level 1 logotype is clearest and most communicative, and should therefore be used wherever possible. In certain contexts, depending on format, you may need to choose one of the other versions.

Two-line centred main logotype (recommended):

Single line centred main logotype:

Horizontal main logotype:

Sub-logotypes

The two-line logotype also exists in versions known as sub-logotypes. Lund University consists of many different organisations and in certain contexts there is a particular need to clarify which part of the University is communicating. Combining the University’s main logotype with the name of a specific organisation forms a sub-logotype that clarifies the origin of the message.

  • Faculties and schools, as well as Campus Helsingborg, are written in capital letters (these sub-logotypes replace the previous level 2 logotypes).
  • Other sub-logotypes are written using a first capital letter followed by lowercase. Organisations that use abbreviations or acronyms are an exception – these can be in capitals.

Example of sub-logotypes

Sublogotype School of Economics and Management

The text stating the organisation’s name or acronym is always to the right of the logotype.

Sublogotype Sten K Johnson

The field under the horizontal line can be used to clarify what the name stands for or to indicate faculty affiliation.

CASE sublogotype

In sub-logotypes that use abbreviations, the name is always to be written or explained under the horizontal line. The full name of Lund University should never be written in a sub-logotype as it is already included in the main logotype.

Basic criteria for permission to use a sub-logotype

Sub-logotypes are primarily for faculties and schools, as well as Campus Helsingborg. Any other organisations considering applying to use a sublogotype need to analyse and justify the need for it, not least from the perspective of external recipients.

Basic criteria for obtaining a sub-logotype is that the organisation:

  • has a particular need for external communication and branding.
  • is of substantial scope in terms of staff and funding.
  • is of a long-term nature.

In addition to faculties and schools, other activities may also be given the opportunity to use a sublogotype in case of special requirements:

  • Departments.
  • Large research-based groups.
  • External engagement projects
  • Innovation organisations.
  • Administrative units with particular competitive circumstances.

Please note that your organisation does not need a sublogo to be able to build a website in the university-wide Drupal web solution. The web templates always include the University’s main logo in Swedish or English, and you can simply give your website the organisation’s name in the intended space in the page heading. On the other hand, organisations that already have an approved sublogo can have that placed in the page heading instead.

Applying for a sub-logotype

Applications for a sub-logotype are to be submitted to the relevant faculty (or equivalent) which will approve or reject the application after consultation with Corporate Communications. Approved applications are processed by Corporate Communications who will order and deliver the sub-logotype in an approved format. Please note that producing your own sublogotypes or altering approved sublogotypes is not permitted.

Things to remember when using the logotype

The lund university logotype must always:.

  • Appear in the colours bronze/blue, black or white.
  • Appear in a size where the seal (see image below) is at least 10 millimetres high.
  • Be placed in a space which is free of text or other elements, known as a free zone. This free zone must always be at least as wide and as high as the “L” in the word LUND.
  • Be placed on a simple and plain background, so as to be clearly visible.

The Lund University logotype must never:

  • Be modified in any way, such as writing a different name next to/under the seal.
  • Appear in colours other than bronze/blue, black or white.
  • Be modified in its proportions.
  • Appear on a busy background.

The seal must always be at least 10 millimeters high:
