11 Queer books from India You Must Read

Queerness is not a new thing in India, no matter the conservatives who tell you how it’s a modern invention caused by Western influence that goes against our traditions and cultural values. In fact, there is a rich history of literature about homosexuality, transgenderism, and gender fluidity. From ancient epics to scriptures, to medieval prose and poetry, to art and architecture, queerness is present.

Section 377, which made “sexual acts against nature” illegal, was added by the British during colonial rule. Still, queer literature was written and read, even if the writers were prosecuted for obscenity. Chocolate, a 1924 short story by Hindi writer Pandey Bechan Sharma, examined homoerotic desires while Lihaaf, a 1942 short story by Urdu writer Ismat Chugtai, subtly explored lesbianism. The law was finally overturned in September 2018 after a lot of hard work.

One of the reasons behind making this list was to highlight queer Indian literature for a global audience. The publishing industry is overshadowed by books published in and about the Global West. It is rare from books from other parts of the world to receive the same amount of recognition. Reading about cultures not our own is always an enriching experience. So this Pride Month, let this eclectic mix of fiction, short stories, nonfiction, and memoirs change your life.

A Life in Trans Activism by A. Revathi

Revathi is an activist, theatre-person, and author who works at Sangama, a Bangalore-based human rights organization dedicated towards helping individuals who belong to sexual minorities. She became well-known when her sensational memoir, The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life Story, was released in 2011. It narrated her own life experiences as a transwoman. This book, published in 2016, explores the changes in her life after becoming a recognized authority on trans issues due to the success of her memoir. Revathi describes her life, her fight for the rights of transpeople, and she rose in the ranks at Sangama. She also talks at length about the experiences of transmen, whose stories perhaps don’t get discussed much compared to those of transwomen. The book provides a glimpse into the life of an extraordinary person and the reader is challenged to think beyond simplistic gender and sex binaries.

A Married Woman by Manju Kapur

Manju Kapur is known for her slow and subtle domestic dramas. A few of her books have been widely adapted for television soap operas throughout India. This 2003 novel charts the life of Asha, an educated middle-class woman who had a traditional arranged marriage. Even though she has everything she could possibly want, she is dissatisfied and unhappy. In her search for new meaning, she tries her hand at activism, working on the issue of the Babri Masjid. Soon her paths cross Pipee, another activist, which leads to her sexual re-awakening and liberation. Astha begins an extramarital affair with her but her quest for love will have dangerous consequences for her marriage and family. Kapur’s novel is a nuanced exploration of familial power dynamics in an Indian context and she sensitively writes about the Hindu/Muslim communal tangles.

Babyji by Abha Dawesar

Abha Dawesar is an Indian novelist and visual artist who lives in New York City. Her works explore sexuality and relationships. Babyji, her landmark 2005 book, won numerous literary awards including the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction and the Stonewall Book Award. It is a controversial sexual coming-of-age novel about a sixteen year old girl living in Delhi. Anamika loves quantum physics and frequently engages in various acts of parental rebellion, like sneaking off to the garage to read the Kamasutra . She is a precocious child, and not an ideal protagonist. Her actions are imbued with teenage recklessness and irrational thinking, even as she stands at the cusp of adulthood.  The book comes with a lot of trigger warnings and even though it might not have aged well over the years, it remains an important read today.

Cobalt Blue by Sachin Kundalkar

Sachin Kundalkar is a Marathi film director and screenplay writer. Recipient of two National Film Awards, he has also written for theatre. Cobalt Blue , originally published in 2006 and translated into English in 2013, was his debut novel which he started writing at the age of 20 and finished at the age of 22. It narrates the story of two siblings, a brother and sister, who fall in love with the mysterious young man staying at their home as a paying guest. Both of them develop feelings for him individually, without the other being aware. Kundalkar has wonderfully explored middle-class aspirations and the blurred nature of human transgressions. Told from the sibling’s perspectives as a set of monologues, it is an engrossingly tender story of longing and heartbreak which amply displays the wildly transformative power of love.

Kari by Amruta Patil

Amruta Patil was born in Goa and holds the distinction of perhaps being the first ever Indian female graphic novelist. Kari, her 2008 debut, begins with the eponymous protagonist and her lover, Ruth, attempting suicide by drowning. Both of them survive but the incident leads to their parting, resulting in a profound sense of loss in Kari’s psyche. Her sexual orientation is kept hazy and pitted against the hyper-heterosexual visage of the city she inhabits. It is an exploration of a feminine subjectivity, and how society shackles unbridled gender expression in women by promoting heteronormativity.  The artwork is visually arresting and the predominantly monochromatic palette complements the story magnificently.  Kari is a brilliant graphic novel about heartbreak and friendship that will be vividly remembered long after the last page is turned.

My Father’s Garden by Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar

Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar is a medical officer and writer from Jharkhand. He belongs to the Santhal tribe, one of India’s Adivasi (indigenous) groups, and his works are inspired from his rich heritage. My Father’s Garden, published in 2018, is his fourth book and it was shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature in 2019. Divided into three distinct sections, it tells the story of an unnamed narrator, a young doctor, as he attempts to navigate through various turmoils in his life. The unadorned prose explores the interstices of desire, sexuality and masculinity, especially in small semi-urban communities. Shekhar also sheds light on class and caste divides that affect Santhal life. Through its raw and evocative yet emotionally intense writing, the book examines outdated gender roles and expectations in the light of strained parental relationships.

Memory of Light by Ruth Vanita

Ruth Vanita is an Indian academician, scholar, translator and activist. Her specialization is in British and Indian literary history, with a special emphasis on gender and sexuality studies. She has written extensively on the long history of same-sex relations and has edited numerous excellent anthologies of queer writing from India. Memory of Light, published in 2020, is her first work of fiction. Set in Lucknow against the backdrop of King George III’s fiftieth birthday celebrations, it is a queer romance and historical fiction novel that takes place in 18th century India. In a world of royal palaces and glitzy courts, a courtesan and a female poet fall in love with each other. Supported by their friends, they carry out their dalliances in a clandestine manner. The book uses history and wonderfully transforms it into a lush tale about female desire.

Mohanaswamy by Vasudhendra

Vasudhendra is a fiction writer, publisher and queer rights activist who writes in Kannada, one of the many regional languages of India. Mohanaswamy, first published in 2013, is a collection of interconnected short stories which revolve around the eponymous protagonist who is homosexual. The book begins with Mohanaswamy’s long-time partner leaving him for a woman which leads him to wonder about the colourful life he has lived, the array of different choices he has made, and everything else that has brought him to this point. His only desire is to lead a peaceful existence with dignity and at least ignore, if not stop, the rampant homophobia he is faced with frequently since his youth. It also highlights human hypocrisy and how society views gay men. The writing is delicately disarming and the narrative draws you in completely.

No Outlaws in the Gender Galaxy by Various

Zubaan Books is a cutting edge feminist indie publishing house based in India which exclusively puts out books written by women, with an emphasis on South Asian voices. No Outlaws in the Gender Galaxy , published in 2015, is a work of academic non-fiction yet remains accessible. Using first-hand research, it examines the intricacies of gender through the lives of fifty individuals assigned female at birth. Looking at these responses, the authors attempt to come up with ways in which the mainstream discourse around gender can be altered to be more inclusive in nature. The book explores the invasive presence of gender in every arena of human life in public as well as private spheres. It also points out how regressive binary gender norms perpetuate institutional discrimination and oppression. While not an easy read by any means, it is an important glimpse into the inherent complexity of gender.

Red Lipstick: The Men in My Life by Laxmi

Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, known simply as Laxmi, is an activist and classical dancer from Mumbai. Assigned male at birth, she embraces a hijra identity for herself. It is the generic blanket term used for eunuchs, intersex, and transgender people in the Indian subcontinent. They are constitutionally recognized as belonging to the “third gender” in countries of this region. Laxmi is the first transgender person to represent Asia Pacific at the United Nations and she was even a participant on Bigg Boss , the Indian version of Big Brother . In Red Lipstick, written in collaboration with Pooja Pandey and published in 2016, Laxmi provides a no-holds-barred account of her remarkable life with its ups and downs. It is the sensational story of sexual awakening and self-acceptance, charting her journey from a simple child to a living icon.

The Man Who Would Be Queen by Hoshang Merchant

Hoshang Merchant is considered as the first openly gay poet of independent India and Yaraana, edited by him, is perhaps the first gay anthology published in the country. His stunning poetry encapsulates the gay Indian experience in striking imagery and wild shifts of phrase. The Man Who Would Be Queen, published in 2011, is a provocative lyrical autobiography moving from his dysfunctional childhood in Mumbai, to his time abroad in Palestine and Iran, and finally, to his old age in Hyderabad. His many personas intermix in this narrative, among them are Hoshang, the famous homosexual and Hoshang, the celebrated poet. It is the unabashed life of a true bohemian man, full of joie de vivre and heartbreak in unequal measures. Overall, it is a candid account of an eventful existence written with remarkable emotional depth.

It goes without saying that lists like this are always representative, never exhaustive. It is impossible for me to mention each and every work of note within Indian queer literature. So I request you all to treat this as a starter pack, a primer, an introduction. Then using it as a jumping off point, explore further and wade deeper. • When Breath Becomes Air begins when Paul Kalanithi, a young neurosurgeon, is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Exquisite and poignant, this memoir grapples with some of the most difficult human experiences, including fatherhood, mortality, and the search for meaning.
• A memoir of relationship abuse, Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House is candid and innovative in form. Machado writes about thorny and turbulent subjects with clarity, even wit. While intensely personal, In the Dream House is also one of most insightful pieces of cultural criticism.
• Twenty-five years after leaving for Canada, Michael Ondaatje returns to his native Sri Lanka to sort out his family’s past. • “ The Book of My Life ” offers a portrait of a professor that the writer, Aleksandar Hemon, once had as a child in communist Sarajevo. This memoir was collected into Hemon’s The Book of My Lives , a collection of essays about the writer’s personal history in wartime Yugoslavia and subsequent move to the US.
• “The first time I cheated on my husband, my mother had been dead for exactly one week.” So begins Cheryl Strayed’s “ The Love of My Life ,” an essay that the writer eventually expanded into the best-selling memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail .
• In “ What We Hunger For ,” Roxane Gay weaves personal experience and a discussion of The Hunger Games into a powerful meditation on strength, trauma, and hope. “What We Hunger For” can also be found in Gay’s essay collection, Bad Feminist .
• A humorous memoir structured around David Sedaris and his family’s memories of pets, “ The Youth in Asia ” is ultimately a story about grief, mortality and loss. This essay is excerpted from the memoir Me Talk Pretty One Day , and a recorded version can be found here .

Thank you for this website. It’s very engaging. I have been writing a memoir for over three years, somewhat haphazardly, based on the first half of my life and its encounters with ignorance (religious restrictions, alcohol, and inability to reach out for help). Three cities were involved: Boston as a youngster growing up and going to college, then Washington DC and Chicago North Shore as a married woman with four children. I am satisfied with some chapters and not with others. Editing exposes repetition and hopefully discards boring excess. Reaching for something better is always worth the struggle. I am 90, continue to be a recital pianist, a portrait painter, and a writer. Hubby has been dead for nine years. Together we lept a few of life’s chasms and I still miss him. But so far, my occupations keep my brain working fairly well, especially since I don’t smoke or drink (for the past 50 years).

I am a survivor of gun violence, having witnessed my adult son being shot 13 times by police in 2014. I have struggled with writing my memoir because I have a grandson who was 18-months old at the time of the tragedy and was also present, as was his biological mother and other family members. We all struggle with PTSD because of this atrocity. My grandson’s biological mother was instrumental in what happened and I am struggling to write the story in such a way as to not cast blame – thus my dilemma in writing the memoir. My grandson was later adopted by a local family in an open adoption and is still a big part of my life. I have considered just writing it and waiting until my grandson is old enough to understand all the family dynamics that were involved. Any advice on how I might handle this challenge in writing would be much appreciated.

I was thrilled to find this material on How to Write A Memoir. When I briefly told someone about some of my past experiences and how I came to the United States in the company of my younger brother in a program with a curious name, I was encouraged by that person and others to write my life history.

Based on the name of that curious program through which our parents sent us to the United States so we could leave the place of our birth, and be away from potentially difficult situations in our country.

As I began to write my history I took as much time as possible to describe all the different steps that were taken. ‘this american ex-wife,’ ‘everywhere the undrowned’ and ‘the manicurist’s daughter’ delve into the challenges of knowing oneself and one’s family, ‘this american ex-wife: how i ended my marriage and started my life,’ by lyz lenz.

What’s clear from the very first page of Lenz’s new book is that her ex-husband is a real jerk: leaving garbage to fester on the floor, taking Lenz’s feminist mugs and hiding them in the basement, telling her she should get pregnant with baby No. 3 and write fiction to be “less stressed out.” Oh, and he voted for Donald Trump . Lenz acknowledges that getting married young and being raised in an evangelical community didn’t help her self-actualization skills. “Do you want to know how I finally got my husband to do his fair share?” Lenz asks. “Court-ordered fifty-fifty custody, that’s how.”

But “This American Ex-Wife” is bigger than Lenz’s horrific marriage. Lenz is a journalist; her previous books, “God Land” and “Belabored,” explored the religious right in middle America and the rights of pregnant people. In her latest, she sets out to prove, using anecdotal evidence and hard statistics, that marriage (as a structure, in this country) is an oppressive tool determined to squeeze the life out of any woman it entraps. While it might be tempting to shrug off Lenz’s argument because of her unlucky (and that’s a nice word for it) coupling, the data here is persuasive. In heterosexual marriages, women bear more of the domestic and emotional labor, even when they are the primary breadwinners. This isn’t inherently because of the institution of marriage, but it stems from the ways we’re socialized to believe that women should function in a family. Lenz quotes a sociologist: “Other countries have social safety nets. The U.S. has women.”

“This American Ex-Wife” can be exhilarating or worrying, depending on the status of the person reading it. What ultimately makes it compelling, whatever one’s feelings about straight marriage, is the sheer joy that Lenz so obviously experiences as a single woman. Even when she meets a man she likes, “the best man I’ve known,” she says, “I was still scheduling and reminding and doing the emotional and cognitive labor. And I was no longer interested in doing all of that. I wanted to be the one who was free.” Lenz is done with marriage, but her book carries a more powerful message than “marriage sucks.” Women’s lives, their happiness and their desires, matter. If a husband stands in the way of a woman being “equally and fully human,” as Lenz puts it, well — it’s time to take out the trash. (Crown, $28)

‘Everywhere the Undrowned: A Memoir of Survival and Imagination,’ by Stephanie Clare Smith

“Cats don’t get sad,” Smith’s mother once told her when the family cat went to hide under the house, presumably to die. “Still,” Smith writes, “I could see it.” There’s not much Smith doesn’t see as a survivor of rape and neglect. When she was 14, her mother left her alone at home in New Orleans to fend for herself over a summer. Looking in her mom’s closet, still filled with all her clothes, “I knew somewhere in between all the shoulders hung my worry — Will she come back? ”

The memoir “Everywhere the Undrowned” is, somewhat unbelievably, Smith’s first book. A poet and essayist, she works as a clinical social worker and mediator in Raleigh, N.C. Her book conveys a story that many survivors of neglect and sexual violence will recognize. Her own experience led her to help other victims. One, named Tiffany, was 14 when her mother decided to relinquish her custodial rights. They discussed tattoos: Tiffany wanted “my mother’s name on my right arm and my sister’s name on my other arm,” she told Smith, despite the fact that her sister wouldn’t claim her, “because I am full black and she’s half.” “This is what it is,” Smith reflects. “We tattoo ourselves with the people who won’t claim us.”

After she was raped by a man in a green truck the summer of her mother’s absence, she put the clothes she had been wearing during the attack in a paper bag and placed them near a trash can. “But when I got back upstairs, I could still hear them crying. After an hour, I brought the clothes inside,” she writes. “They quieted down or else they just died.” This book, told in short vignettes like one of the books Smith recalls reading — “Bluets,” by Maggie Nelson — is a kind of prose poetry that recalls the work of writers like Denis Johnson and Raymond Carver. When Smith finally told her mother about her assault, the response was deeply upsetting. “ Why are you telling me this? She was hot; she was mad. She walked like a gun as she walked out of the room.”

That Smith survived that summer in New Orleans is remarkable. That she found the drive, space and courage to turn that experience into this book is what makes “Everywhere the Undrowned” not only a compelling memoir but a work of literature, the kind she was reading that horrible summer. She recalls staying up late to read Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre”: “One morning, I found a dent on my cheek from where her bound corner slept into me all night.” Describing how Jane survived, because of “her resilient heart cave,” Smith is also describing herself. ‘The Manicurist’s Daughter: A Memoir,’ by Susan Lieu

“In Vietnamese, there are six tones that can change the definition of a word,” Lieu writes. Depending on tone, the word “ma” can mean mother, but, tomb, horse, ghost or rice seedling. The loaded connotations of a lost mother are what haunt and propel this memoir, which is based on Lieu’s one-woman theater show, “140 LBS: How Beauty Killed My Mother.” Lieu was 11 when her mother died after a botched tummy tuck procedure performed by a doctor who was on probation at a plastic surgery clinic in San Francisco. The youngest of four, Lieu later made revenge her mission — but when she discovered that the doctor who had performed the surgery was dead, her mission morphed into another: to know her mother. It was a mission made impossible by her family’s unwillingness to speak about her mother or the circumstances of her death.

“It wasn’t until I went to college that I learned words like ‘capitalism,’ ‘exploitation,’ and ‘intergenerational trauma,’” Lieu recalls. Her parents were from Chinese families that had fled persecution into Vietnam, and from there to America. Lieu was the first child born in the United States, so her mother decided to give her an American name. It was also the name of the first nail salon her parents opened, Susan’s Nails, over which her mother presided like a general. When Lieu went to Harvard, students shared their parents’ careers: surgeon, professor, lawyer. “My dad does nails,” Lieu told them. “He’s a man-i-curist.”

Unsurprisingly, Lieu had a hard time finding her way in life. Her father remarried, her aunts moved out, she fell prey to a yoga cult run by a White woman who demanded money in exchange for spiritual detoxing. Her family’s running commentary on her weight was relentless: “You look fat,” one aunt flatly said. Lieu was driven by some force to keep pushing to learn about her mother in the face of her family’s stonewalling.

“What was she like?” Lieu said in the second iteration of her one-woman show. “No,” her director instructed, “say it like you’re in Viet Nam and you’re shouting across the ocean to America.” Lieu’s foray into theater proved to be a healing balm, not only for her but for her siblings and father as well. “As I inhabited their words, their gestures, their voices, my perception of them began to change,” Lieu writes. “My energy toward them shifted, and so did their communication with me.” Two of her siblings joined her for a Q&A after a performance. “We were children who had tragically lost our mother. Two decades later, I could finally stop because we had found her, through one another.” Maybe. In reality, “The Manicurist’s Daughter” shows that Lieu did the heavy lifting herself. (Celadon, $30)

Retired Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy to Publish Memoir Reflecting on Childhood and Landmark Cases

R etired Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy is set to release a two-volume memoir this fall, chronicling his journey from his upbringing in California to his three decades on the bench, during which he played pivotal roles in landmark cases spanning issues from abortion to gay marriage to campaign finance.

Simon & Schuster announced Tuesday that Kennedy’s memoir, titled “Life and Law: The Early Years” and “Life and Law: The Court Years,” will hit shelves on Oct. 1, both as a boxed set and individual editions, each comprising around 320 pages.

Throughout his tenure, Kennedy was widely regarded as a moderate conservative, often pivotal in closely divided cases such as Obergefell v. Hodges, establishing the constitutional right to same-se*x marriage, and Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, permitting unlimited corporate spending in elections.

Simon & Schuster stated, “In ‘Life and Law,’ he offers insights into the reasons and methods behind his judicial decisions.” “The second volume presents poignant portraits of Justices O’Connor, Rehnquist, Scalia, and Ginsburg, interwoven with Kennedy’s reflections on his pivotal decisions.

However, the first volume, delving into his formative years in Sacramento and his decade as a practicing attorney, illuminates the judicial titan. Readers will witness his transformation from child to man, shaping America’s trajectory as profoundly as any figure in Washington in the 21st century.

Kennedy, 87, revealed in the preface to the first volume that his memoir expanded beyond his initial intentions. “It was my plan (I solemnly swear) to provide a concise account of my early years.

Yet, as I wrote, my recollections veered towards the societal and cultural shifts from the ’40s and ’50s to the ’60s and ’70s. These shifts were relevant to my evolution and the broader societal changes,” he explained.

“As each day passes, we should endeavor to deepen our understanding of ourselves and our aspirations,” he continued. “Writing a memoir is a formalized means to achieve this.” Kennedy served as an associate justice from 1988 to 2018, and his nomination and retirement marked important moments in American politics.

Initially appointed by President Ronald Reagan , Kennedy’s nomination followed the Senate’s rejection of Reagan’s first pick, Robert Bork, and the withdrawal of the second nominee, Douglas Ginsburg.

In 2018, Kennedy’s retirement led to the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh by President Donald Trump , a former Kennedy law clerk, whose confirmation process was marred by allegations of se*xual assault brought by Christine Blasey Ford, a high school acquaintance. Kennedy’s memoir will hit bookstores shortly after the release of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s memoir “Lovely One,” scheduled for Sept. 3.
