Quora is an online questions and answers website with a very diverse content and user base. It is an extremely useful platform for getting answers to your questions as well as brushing up your writing skills by answering questions. This article is a guide to help you get started on Quora.

Getting Started

Screen Shot 2017 09 29 at 4.41.04 PM.png

  • If you don't want to sync your Facebook account, select Not now to skip this step.

Screen Shot 2017 09 29 at 5.51.59 PM.png

  • You can answer the question, comment on an answer, upvote, downvote or share an answer by clicking on their respective buttons, follow the question or bookmark it.
  • Since the feed changes with every refresh, it is recommended to use the bookmark option frequently so you don't lose the answers you like or found helpful.
  • You can also add credentials about your work, study, etc.

Screen Shot 2017 09 29 at 5.52.39 PM.png

  • If you ask the question anonymously, copy the link of the question and save in a text file because this question won't be visible on your profile directly.

Screen Shot 2017 09 29 at 5.57.06 PM.png

  • You can even request specific people for answers. Best way to find the best people who might be helpful by searching some keywords relevant to the question, it will display the users with those keywords in their credentials.

Answering Questions

Step 1 Analyze...

  • If you're answering controversial questions, try to write neutrally. It is easy to get carried away and create extremely emotion-packed answers, but always remember that you are answering a question, not expressing your own feelings.
  • Make sure that the image is relevant to the answer, otherwise the Quora moderation may collapse the answer. When an answer is collapsed, it stops getting exposure in the website.
  • 4 Keep updating the answer if necessary. If the facts of your answers are subject to change , make sure you keep updating the answer. This can be done by going on the answer menu
 and selecting Edit Answer .

Quora Monetization Strategy: The Complete Guide to Making Money on Quora

Nicolas cole, ultimate guide table of contents.

I have been writing on Quora since 2014, but today is a big day. Quora monetization has been put into place. And now, anyone can get started making money on Quora!

With that said, it's not as simple as just creating an account, answering questions, and voila - cash hits your bank account. There's a bit more that goes into generating Quora revenue.

Don't worry. Today, I'm going to tell you everything you need to know about Quora monetization - including what a Quora space is, how Quora+ fits into the equation, and what you can do to today to set yourself up to start making money on Quora.

First - let's take a look at the features of Quora monetization.

What are the Features of Quora Monetization Writers Need to Know?

There are three ways you can generate Quora revenue as of now:

  • A site-wide “Adaptive Paywall” called Quora+
  • Exclusive Quora Spaces subscriptions
  • And a mix of both (ads + subscriptions)

I remember back in 2014, 2015, and 2016 ( and 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020
) how this was the #1 question writers asked within the Quora community. “How do we make money?”

Quora’s first attempt at monetization was with the Quora Partner Program in 2018, which rewarded users (modestly) for asking questions that went on to attract significant viewership and quality answers. At the time, I was a bit underwhelmed by their choice to reward users who asked questions because, despite the fact that I was one of the most-read writers on the entire platform (out of hundreds of millions of users), I think to date I’ve asked less than 20 questions on the entire platform.

But now, in 2021, Quora+ and their rolling out ad-revenue splits and subscription payments feel like a much stronger step in the right direction.

Let’s break each monetization method down.

quora how to learn to write

This is basically a replica of Medium’s paywall model. And if you want to learn how to start writing on Medium , we have a complete guide for that as well. Back to the topic at hand for now - Quora+.

Quora+ is an ad-revenue sharing model that paywalls user content and urges readers to become paying subscribers for $5/mo or $50/year.

Writers and creators then earn revenue based on metrics similar to the way Medium measures engagement: views, upvotes, comments, shares, and most importantly, whether the reader converts and becomes a paying subscriber.

If you’re wondering why Quora (and Medium) operate this way, here’s the TL;DR.

Basically, think of every single writer/creator/user as a “promoter” of the site. Paying subscribers don’t really care about Quora or Medium, in and of themselves. What they care about is the content that exists on those sites. So, in order for Quora and Medium (and other platforms with this same model) to get paying subscribers, they have to let the creators get in on the action.

This is a larger trend that is happening all across the media landscape (creators realizing they’ve been getting the short stick, and platforms realizing if they don’t let creators take part in the upside, they’re going to leave). If you’re interested in reading more about this, I encourage you to give this article about the Direct-To-Creator business model from Category Pirates a read.

Quora Space Subscriptions

quora how to learn to write

Think of Quora Spaces as Monetizable Facebook Groups.

In the past, a user could create a Quora Space (similar to the way you could create a Medium Publication) as a way of curating lots of different content from lots of different (approved) contributors. However, while Quora Spaces had the ability to grow very quickly (there are many Spaces on Quora with hundreds of thousands of followers in all different categories/genres), they never had a great method of monetizing.

Now, they do.

Quora Space Subscriptions allow Space Creators to choose whether or not they want to charge for exclusive access to their content.

For example, let’s say I want to create a Space dedicated to my own perspectives on writing advice. I can create a Quora Space, charge $X/mo (I can determine the amount), and then set permissions for subscribers:

  • Subscribers can ask questions
  • Subscribers can access my posts/content
  • Subscribers can respond, comment, engage, etc.

The opportunity I see here on Quora is that Quora Spaces can capitalize on the broader site’s traffic. With a tool like OnlyFans, the creator is responsible for bringing the traffic/customers to their OnlyFans page and converting them into customers there. On Quora, creators can answer questions on the site that introduce readers to their Quora Space.

The flywheel from “free reader” to “paying subscriber” is much faster.

In addition, Quora Spaces can also participate in Quora+.

This is where things get a little meta.

As a Quora Space creator, you can:

  • Charge readers $X/mo for exclusive access to your Space’s content.
  • And, you can give your Quora Space access to Quora+.

This means you can make money BOTH on subscriptions and ad revenue.

It’s going to take some testing to determine whether you want to do both or one over the other. But this is definitely an interesting mechanism for creators to play with.

What Quora’s Monetization Tools mean for writers/creators:

Now that you have a better understanding of the new Quora revenue features, what's your next step? What does all this mean for writers and creators?

Personally, I am really excited about these new tools.

It's a Shift in the Right Direction

First of all, it signals a broader shift happening all across social media. In the past, major content creation platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) made all their money off creators and chose not to share any of it. And for a long time, the trade-off was worth it.

  • You, as the creator, got (massively exponential) free reach.
  • The platform got a) to sell ads, or b) to sell subscriptions.

Then, platforms like Facebook/Instagram, and even YouTube started to throttle your reach. Suddenly, you had to pay to reach the 3,000 people following you, or your Facebook group. This is what I consider to be the “exploitive years” of social media—where these platforms knew they had creators by the balls and could take as much as they wanted.

Now, with the rise of platforms like Patreon, OnlyFans, and even Medium/Quora, these new monetization tools allow creators/writers to share in the upside, which is amazing. I remember, back in 2014, I was asking myself, “If video makers can make money from YouTube, where do writers write and earn a living?”

It has taken us 8 years to get here, but we made it.

The Opportunity to Make Money on Quora is Vast

Second, Medium has opened the door for monetization for writers/creators, but it’s worth keeping in mind that Quora is literally 10x the size of Medium.

It’s estimated that Medium has around ~30 million users.

Quora has north of 300 million.

I know many of the Top Writers on Medium, and I know most of them don’t make more than $10,000 per month (which means even the most successful writers on Medium are barely earning $100,000 per year). In contrast to what the top musicians earn via streams on Spotify (amounting to tens of millions of dollars per year), I still think the digital writing/publishing landscape has a ways to go before digital writers start crossing into the realm of true fame, stardom, and wealth creation.

Quora is, by a wide margin, the largest writing platform on the Internet with built-in monetization tools.

This means, in theory, it has the most earning potential for writers/creators.

If Quora is 10x the size of Medium, and even the most successful writers on Medium barely earn $10,000/month, then it’s reasonable to assume there will be a handful of writers on Quora who (again, IN THEORY) reach $100,000 per month (or more) in earnings.

I have been writing online since I was 17 years old—more than a decade.

And I’ve never seen this achieved by a writer in a social environment.

I’ve seen these numbers achieved by SEO bloggers with massive websites that make money off Google Adsense. I’ve seen these numbers achieved by digital entrepreneurs who use written content to sell courses, products, etc. But I’ve never seen these numbers achieved by writers, in the most authentic sense of the word, in environments that reward them for their performance.

I cannot emphasize enough how big of a deal this is in the history of Online Writing—and I’ve written the book on how the online writing landscape has changed over the past 10 years.

I’m going to be experimenting with these tools with the cohort-based writing community I started with Dickie Bush, called Ship 30 for 30 .

And I’m going to be experimenting with these tools with the weekly paid newsletter I started with Christopher Lochhead and Eddie Yoon, called Category Pirates.

Final Thoughts on the New Quora Monetization Strategy

That concludes our breakdown of the new Quora monetization strategy.

I am going to be experimenting heavily with Quora+ and Quora Space Subscriptions - and I suggest you do the same.

If any platform is going to nail independent monetization for writers, it’s going to be Quora or Medium.

Now, the race is on.

Keep in mind - to really generate Quora revenue, you need to actually be a prolific writer that creates valuable, well-written content that helps people. Easier said than done - but we're here to help.

You can learn how to start writing online in our complete guide. There, you'll discover content frameworks (including how to generate content ideas on autopilot) and we'll share headline templates . If you want to learn how to overcome writer's block , we have a guide on that as well.

How to Use Quora to Write Your Next Book – Guest Post by Allen Taylor

Allen Taylor

Writers can come up with all sorts of ways to choose topics for books we want to write. From personal experience to keyword research, there are a myriad of ways to test the market, research the market, and write for the market. Even writers who aren’t market-oriented come up with creative ways to address the subject they want to write about. Now I’d like to share one other way savvy writers can find their next topic, research it, find experts to interview, and kick out their next title. It’s called Quora.

If you’ve never heard of it, Quora is the Internet’s most incredible question and answer website. Even better than Yahoo! Answers .

What makes Quora so incredible? That’s what the rest of this post is about.

How to Use Quora to Write Your Next Book

If you think about what goes into the writing of a book—research, interviews, data sourcing, organizing information—then this question should answer itself. But I’m not letting myself off the hook. Instead, I’ll share six powerful ways Quora can be your next great book writing tool.

1) Find a Topic to Write About

Chances are, you know what you want to write about. But even if you do, you can use Quora to hone your topic to a finer, more narrow topic. Here are a couple of ways to do that:

  • Ask a Question – It’s a question and answer site, so ask a question about a topic you want to explore. This will do a couple of things for you. First, it will help you gauge interest in the topic. If no one answers your question, then you know it’s a topic few people are interested in. Secondly, the answers you receive could give you plenty of fodder for research and digging deeper into your subject.
  • Subscribe to a Few Topics – Pick some topics in which you have an interest and subscribe to them. That way, you can see what questions others are asking. If you see a question someone else has asked that is getting a lot of response, then you know there’s another hot topic. It could be a potential book for you. Quora will ask you which topics you want to follow when you join.

2) Find Experts to Interview

It is easy to find experts on Quora for that is precisely what makes Quora the best question and answer website online. It is designed specifically to appeal to professionals and experts in practically every subject area. Once you follow certain topics, you can go to the home page for those topics and view the most viewed writers who post on those topics. For instance, here are the most viewed writers in the Law topic at Quora. You’ll see that the top Quoran in that topic is a lawyer by the name of Chris Gilley. He specializes in product management and legal technology. If your book touches on those topics, you can contact Mr. Gilley and request an interview.

3) Conduct In-Depth Research

Besides finding people to interview, it’s easy to conduct in-depth research on Quora because every topic knowledgeable people post about is covered in so many different angles. All you have to do is conduct a Google search on any topic and add “Quora” (without parentheses) to your search query. Here’s an example:

Google search query: publishing e-books quora

This search query reveals over 100,000 search results. The entire first page of search results show content on the Quora website, and most of the results on the second page do, as well. When I click on the first result, the Quora question, “What’s the best way to publish an e-book?” there are 62 answers. Imagine how much information you can find about your topic just by Googling for Quora content!

Now, I’m not saying you should end your research with Quora, nor do you necessarily have to begin there. But Quora is a rich source of information on many topics, and a huge amount of it is produced by expert-level sources.

4) Produce Content For Your Book

Besides answering questions asked by other Quorans, you can test content for your book by starting a Quora blog. If you go to your Quora profile, there is a button you can click on to start a blog. You can start as many Quora blogs as you want, but the reason Quora is a good place to start a blog about a particular topic on which you wish to write a book is because other Quorans interested in that topic can follow your blog and provide feedback on your posts. This will be tremendously helpful as you engage potential readers of your book.

Of course, you can always start a blog at Blogspot, WordPress.com, or set one up on a dedicated Web domain, but at Quora you won’t have to fiddle with themes, spend money on hosting, or search for an available domain name. Plus, your Quora audience is a tight group that you can target with your content without having to research keywords or expend a lot of time on search engine content just to find readers. The readers are already there, and if they are following the topic of your blog, you have a built-in audience.

5) Build Your Platform, Market Your Book

Marketing takes place long before your book is published. In fact, you should start marketing your book as soon as you start writing it. And with Quora, that’s precisely what you’ll be doing. It begins with your Quora profile. Mention that you are an author and tell your potential audience what topics you like writing about.

Next, answer the questions related to your topic of interest. Other people interested in those topics, asking questions—and answering them—related to your niche are potential readers, interview subjects, or partners in some other way.

Using Quora to write your book can focus your content toward an audience that is already defined by the question and answer platform. From there, it’s just a matter of turning that platform into your own personal tightly targeted author platform. Once you penetrate the niche market of Quora experts, you can migrate that audience to your external author platform on your website, author blog, and other social media.

6) Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn: Social Push and Pull

If you are active on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, you can connect your Quora account so that answers you post and questions you ask are automatically shared on your other social media accounts. This will draw your fans from other social media sites to Quora to follow you there. Anyone really interested in your topic will want to follow you anywhere you are posting expert-level information.

What Are You Waiting For?

Now that you are familiar with Quora, try using it to write your next book. You can use this social media site for finding topics, conducting research, finding suitable people to interview, and even marketing your next book.

How to use quora to learn a language.

woman on laptop exploring quora language learning opportunities

If you’ve ever been on the question-and-answer site Quora , you know it’s home to some of the smartest people on the internet. Sure, any forum site will have some trolls and posers, and it’s important to be skeptical sometimes. But by and large, Quora’s users are very knowledgeable in their subject areas of expertise and happy to help those who want to learn. That’s why it’s such a great supplement to your language-learning routine. You can use the site’s Q&A feature to practice your reading and writing skills and to ask questions about any part of a language you’re struggling to grasp. We’ve put together a list of tips for making the most of your time on the website, starting with how to change your Quora language to the one you want to learn.

Tips For Successful Quora Language Learning

1. add your target language(s).

One of the cool things about Quora is that you can set a primary language and then add additional languages that you can toggle between whenever you want. So even if your default Quora language is English, you can easily switch it to Spanish and your feed will be filled with questions and answers in Spanish. To add languages, click your profile image on the top right of the screen and select “Languages.”

2. Explore Quora In That Language

Now that you’ve added the language you’re learning, toggle on over to that language and start scrolling. Reading other users’ questions and answers can be a good test of your comprehension skills. When you feel ready, consider moving from lurking to interacting by answering some questions in your target language. This will help you sharpen those writing skills . Native speakers may reply to your comments with corrections, but don’t take it too personally. Mistakes are the best way to learn! You may even want to admit in your comments that you’re practicing a second language and welcome any feedback.

3. Jot Down New Words And Phrases

Whether your Quora language is set to English or the one you’re learning, you should always have a document open or a notebook nearby so you can write down any words or phrases that you come across on the site. Keeping a list of unfamiliar vocabulary will help you remember it going forward. Many of the answers on Quora are lists of words or phrases and their translations, especially on “spaces” (Quora’s word for curated communities of posts about a certain topic) specifically related to language learning. We’ll talk more about spaces in tip #5.

4. Ask Questions

The purpose of Quora is to ask questions and crowdsource answers from people who are interested in and knowledgeable about a particular topic. So if you aren’t sure what a word means or need advice on when to use a certain phrase or have a grammatical question, don’t be afraid to ask. It’s worth it to check that your question hasn’t been asked and answered. But as long as you make sure to share your question to the appropriate spaces, you’ll probably get an answer (or multiple answers). And like your teachers always said, if you have a question, someone else probably has the same one.

5. Follow Everything Language (And Other Spaces)

The content you see on Quora primarily depends on two things: which posts you’ve clicked on and interacted with in the past, and which spaces you’re following. If you’re using the site to learn a language, you should be interacting with plenty of language content, but you should also make sure to follow some language-learning spaces. To start, you can follow Babbel’s space, Everything Language . This will give you access to a community of language learners, teachers and enthusiasts, whose insights will be extremely valuable to you as you work on your language skills. You’ll be able to give back to the community, too, just by asking and answering questions and upvoting posts you find helpful.

A Guide To Quora Marketing: How To Become A Top Writer And Boost Your Business

What is Quora Marketing?

Growing brand awareness is a time-consuming task that requires effort and drive. And you as a marketer need to know the most effective, fast, and cost-efficient ways to do it. Which is why you may have heard about Quora marketing.

Quora is used by millions of potential buyers and thousands of companies, and it’s the perfect place to promote your product. Find out how to use Quora to market your business and become a top writer to boost traffic to your website. To collect the best tips I’ve asked our Outbound Marketing Manager Valerie to help me and she has eagerly supplied me with advice armory that helped her get her answers seen by over half a million people.

  • What is Quora

How Quora can help your business

How to create the best quora profile, quora profile credibility cheat-sheet, how to choose the right quora questions, how to write good answers on quora, extra tips on building a quora marketing strategy, what is quora.

Quora is a question-answer platform where you can ask anything and receive answers by volunteer posters. The questions vary from professional ones that demand a lot of experience and knowledge, to personal, funny, and even confusing questions anyone might have.

If you’re in marketing, you might want to try using Quora as a valuable traffic source. By answering questions in your niche and inserting links to your blog or landing page (all links are no-follow, by the way, in case you’re considering it for SEO), you can grow your traffic and improve your brand awareness.

If you answer questions regularly and your answers are of great quality (we’ll go into how to write good answers on Quora further on), you can become a top writer . As a top writer, your answers can be added to the Quora Digest mailing list and people who are subscribed to the topic you’re active in will receive an email with your answer.

Quora digest example

Note: If 100k people are subscribed to a topic, there’s no guarantee that all of them will receive your answer. Sometimes only 1% of subscribers will.

Besides driving traffic, there’s many other reasons you may want to give Quora a try:

✔ Stay up to date on new trends in your niche. Discover relevant issues, ask your own questions, and learn from your target audience and competitors.

✔ Educate people about your product. If someone is asking directly about your tool or service, don’t lose the opportunity. Provide full support to potential clients and share relevant links when necessary.

✔ Grow brand awareness. Quora is used by millions of people, and consistently sharing your solution in relevant topics will help you stay top of mind with potential leads.

According to SimilarWeb, more than half a billion people visit Quora monthly. Need traffic to your website and more clients? Tiny budget? Quora is the solution for you. – Valerie, Snov.io Outbound Marketing Manager

Building your Quora marketing strategy starts with your profile. Add as much information as you can, make sure your photo is actually you, describe who you are and why potential readers should trust your answers. Avoid looking too promotional and salesy – readers trust real people over brand accounts.

Here’s how to create a Quora profile: Step 1. Go to Quora and sign up through Gmail or Facebook. Step 2 . Choose at least 10 topics you are interested in. Step 3. Define the languages you know. Step 4. Click the Home button. On the right, there’s the Set up your account checklist: follow more spaces and topics, add credentials, upvote answers, ask questions, and, of course, start answering them.

Here’s a shortlist of tips on how to become more credible on Quora we’ve created from our own experience:

Tip 1. Reputation is in the details. Don’t try to cheat or fool other Quora users:

  • Don’t be a John/Jane Doe. Use your real name.
  • Add a short bio.
  • Don’t be another faceless user. Use your real photo.
  • Mention the city you live in and which ones you visit most often.
  • Include credentials about your education and employment.
  • Provide the company name you are working at and share a link to your website so people can find out more.
  • Connect your Twitter and Facebook accounts.

With all this information about you, people will see you as a pro and not a passer-by.

Tip 2. In the settings, you can choose the frequency and types of emails you want to receive from Quora. Choose Daily to receive emails with the questions you can answer every day.

Tip 3. Select topics you specialize in. The more topics you choose, the more questions you will have an opportunity to answer. For example, if you work in the email marketing niche, choose the following topics: email marketing, email deliverability, email automation, email addresses, lead generation, B2B lead generation, etc.

Tip 4. Add specified topics you are knowledgeable about and provide a short bio for them.

Tip 5. Regularly conduct research on the relevant topics and follow them. When you click the Follow topic button, other related topics will appear. Choose the ones most relevant for you.

These tips will give you an opportunity to answer more questions and if you do it right, you will soon become the top writer. As an actual example, take a look at our Outbound Marketing Manager Valerie’s profile .

Not all Quora questions can give you the results you’re looking for. Constant research on topics and questions is vital to the success of your Quora marketing efforts.

There’s a couple of things you should know about how to search for the right questions. Of course, first you have to define relevant keywords (you most likely already have them picked for your SEO) and search them in the Search bar. Now you can start choosing the best questions.

✔ Pay attention to the number of question followers. The number of followers is actually the number of people waiting for answers to this question – the higher it is, the better. Filter the questions by type, topics, and time, and always follow the details on questions, choosing the most-awaited and most viewed questions (1,000+). This is manual work so get ready to spend some time searching for the best questions.

✔ Don’t just answer popular questions. It’s extremely important to answer both old high-traffic Quora questions and new questions that have just recently appeared. By answering only old popular questions you are much more likely to be banned.

✔ Manage your questions. Go to the Answer tab. There you will see three categories: Questions for You, Answer Requests, and Answer Later. In the first category, you can find questions suggested by Quora based on the topics you are interested in. In the second group, Answer Requests, there will be questions that other Quora users want you to answer – these are rare but a good sign that your answers are valuable to readers. The last category is kind of a backlog – when you come across a relevant question but have no time to answer it, add it there and answer it later.

✔ Don’t ignore Related Questions When you are active on Quora, the platform starts suggesting Related Questions . Do not avoid them: the more you answer, the better is your reputation.

As the main aim of using Quora for marketing is to drive traffic to your blog, search for the questions answers to which you already have on your blog, and surely, link your answer back to the relevant article. – Valerie, Snov.io Outbound Marketing Manager

Generally, to become the top writer on Quora, you need to:

  • Be one of the first to find the question you can answer
  • Give answers as quickly after the question’s been posted as possible
  • Write the best answers possible

Of course, the speed at which you search for questions and the speed you write with is totally on you. But I am here to help you with the last point – how to write good answers on Quora with these 21 tips.

Tip 1. Analyze your niche: see what people are interested in, how other Quora users answer, which answers get the most upvotes, and which get the least attention, and build your own answering strategy.

Tip 2. Present yourself as an authority. Be confident, especially when the question is about your service or product. Use words that prove you know what you are writing about, for example: definitely, certainly, no doubt, I am sure, absolutely, etc.

Tip 3. Be patient and avoid being too promotional. Strike a happy balance and stick to it.

Tip 4. When you do promote (when the question asks for it) don’t forget to share the benefits of using your solution. It’s never about what you can do, it’s always about what the user gets out of it.

Tip 5. If you are afraid that you will be banned for speaking about your product (which is not uncommon), add a toggle disclaimer. So your answer will be considered as “I know this because I work here.”

Tip 6. Provide proof and sources whenever you share any stats or data. Exact data and numbers are popular in Quora answers, to the point where even if your answer isn’t read in full, it’s often upvoted just for the research.

Tip 7. Add screenshots, graphs, infographics, gifs, and other relevant visual content as proof of the idea you’re pushing. Visual content gets more attention and is processed faster than reading.

Tip 8. Use videos. They get even more attention than pictures and are a neat way to complement your answer.

Videos are great and you should definitely try to use them in your answers. They work best for B2C and personal questions (like hobbies and interests). For B2B videos aren’t as popular so I try to avoid them and use text and valuable screenshots only. I insert videos in my answers only when they are really REALLY relevant. – Valerie, Snov.io Outbound Marketing Manager

Tip 9. Memes and funny gifs won’t help you on Quora. Who wants to see memes when searching for help regarding Angel Investors or email marketing frequency ?

Tip 10. Don’t tread water – get to the point. Reread your answer and make sure the readers won’t be asking “ And..?” at the end.

Tip 11. Give full and rich answers. Write it in the form of a mini-article of at least 1,500 symbols. Check that you’ve covered all the important points and the text is easy-to-read.

Tip 12. Text formatting matters. Use numbered and bulleted points, write in bold and italics to emphasize important parts. Mix short and long sentences to improve readability.

Tip 13. When using Quora for marketing, remember that links to landing pages are forbidden. You can, however, insert links to relevant resources like your blog and e-books.

Tip 14. Attach links wisely. Do not just insert a URL in the middle of a sentence. Choose relevant anchor words to not lose the text’s readability.

quora how to learn to write

Tip 15. Though the number of links in answers is not officially limited, we don’t recommend going overboard. Of course, if you’re trying to answer a question “Which email marketing blogs do you find useful?” , you’ll have to include a bunch of links and that’s ok. But if the question is more general or educational and you can avoid links – do it, or just use one or two.

Tip 16. When you answer questions, add topics. They are set as #hashtags so other Quora users can find your answers. This can help your answer get ranked in other topics and more people will have an opportunity to see it.

Tip 17. Don’t waste time SEO optimizing the answer. The only way your answer might appear on the first page of Google search results is if the question itself is optimized. No matter how many keywords you insert in the answer, it won’t be on the first page if the question itself doesn’t rank high.

Tip 18. You are replying to a real person, not a bot. Use personal pronouns, attract attention to your ideas, and try to establish a connection.

Tip 19. Never blame other writers on Quora and do not argue with them. If you do not agree with their opinion, express it in a polite manner, like this: “ I do understand your point of view, though I stick to another one. Let me explain.

Tip 20. You are a professional so do not write in a sarcastic or comic manner. That’s unprofessional and might come across as rude and get you blocked.

Tip 21. Every snowflake is unique. You want your answers to be like snowflakes – one in a million. So always check if anyone’s already written what you were planning to write. If the question has a great following and you really know how to help users but most of your answer has already been written, you can try a different technique. Mention that you agree with someone’s answer, compliment their reply, and then write your answer. Take a look at how Valerie replies in such situations:

What is Quora Marketing?

These tips don’t really fit in our previous lists, but I can describe them as unwritten rules that will help you build an effective Quora marketing strategy:

1. Be social . Share your answers on your other socials like Facebook: if you have a rich network there, it might help your answers get more attention.

2. Choose a niche you’re most knowledgeable in , find a relevant community, stay active in it, position yourself, and keep providing value.

3. Help others . Get in touch with other authors on Quora: follow them, upvote, leave comments, and hope they will pay back with your own coin. Moreover, this way you can grow your lead base – why not find people asking about your company and reach out to them directly?

4. Follow Spaces on Quora . Spaces are like Reddit Threads or Telegram Channels: there, people share their content and you can both learn something new and share your own relevant insights.

5. Add your Quora account to your Contact Information landing page and mention that questions on Quora are answered within 24 hours (just an example, you can set your own time limits). Make sure you are committed enough to actually deliver on your promises. This will open a new communication channel with potential leads.

6. Ask your own questions from time to time and give them a “personal” twist. As an example, take a look at these two questions and say which one would you rather follow and answer:

Which tool do you personally use for sending email drip campaigns? or What are the best tools for sending email drip campaigns?

The first question is more likely to gain traction on Quora because it gives authors a possibility to provide their honest answers without too much research and gives them an opportunity to promote their tool.

7. Be consistent . There’s no clear framework of how many questions or answers you should write daily, as long as you do it regularly . We recommend writing daily, but you can just switch on Quora notifications and check your account a couple of times a week.

I answer 2 questions daily. It’s really good if you to leave even just 1 comment a day. In 365 days, you will have 365 answers on Quora. Not bad for a lazy approach! [laughs] As for questions, I don’t ask them, actually. But if there’s anything you’re interested in – go ahead. – Valerie, Snov.io Outbound Marketing Manager

8. Don’t try to cheat the system . Do not:

  • Quote without a source
  • Create fictional accounts to grow upvotes
  • Copy your own answers from other questions or parts of articles on your blog

9. If you get a moderator’s suggestions for improvements , do them as quickly as possible. Otherwise, you may either get blocked or your answer will be hidden.

10. Check your Quora performance regularly . Go to the Statistics tab to get insights on your answers’ views, upvotes, and shares, overall and individual posts. You can see stats for the last day, week, month, year or the whole time you’ve been on Quora. With this information, you will be able to find poor-performing answers and improve them.

11. Use Google Analytics together with Quora . Go to your Google Analytics, choose Quora, and learn just how much traffic you’re generating from Quora.

12. Try Quora Ads and Quora Pixel if you have the budget for it. This way you can promote your solution and get information on clicks and conversions.

Learning to write is a process, one that requires consistent hard work and determination—and perhaps some magic! But, as with any other skill, it’s important to work hard on the right thing.

Instead of providing a list of pointers on how to learn to write for general purposes, this guide will offer eight key tips that will help you learn how to write creatively.

Learn to Write with 8 Simple Tips

1. how to learn to write: take a writing class.

A writing class is a great place for writers to begin—it’s also where this writer first learned to write! The writing class is great for all kinds of learners as it provides a range of learning formats, including lectures, discussions, and workshops. The most valuable aspect of taking a writing course, however, is that it provides a supportive environment for writers.

In my experience, taking classes helped me to get over my fear of the blank page by showing me multiple approaches to beginning a poem, short story, or essay. Having the structure of a writing course was particularly helpful, as it kept me accountable to my goals.

writers.com has a great roster of creative writing courses . But, before you sign up for a writing class, I would suggest that you do some research. Some questions to ask include: who’s teaching? Are there prerequisites? What is the class size? If you’re looking for an online writing class, this guide offers some great tips!

2. How to Learn to Write: Read

Reading is bread and butter for a writer no matter what stage of their career they’re at. Reading is how we both discover what we gravitate to and, inevitably, learn to write. Writers read not just for fun, but also with a critical lens, noting techniques that we can apply to our own work. Indeed, reading as a writer is a skill that’s very different from reading as a reader, as a student, or even as a scholar. Check out this article to learn more about reading as a writer.

For a more comprehensive guide, I recommend Francine Prose’s Reading Like a Writer: a Guide for People who Love Books and for those who Want to Write Them .

3. How to Learn to Write: Set an intention

Before you start learning to write, take a moment to think about these questions: in an ideal world, what do you want to write? Who would you like to write for? If you’re unsure how to answer these questions, I recommend first listing a few books and/or authors that inspire you. What do these books have in common?

The objective of setting an intention is not to pose an “endpoint” for yourself. Rather, it is to provide yourself with a direction with which to begin . Let’s say that I am interested in writing high-fantasy books like The Lord of the Rings . Although there’s nothing wrong with setting that as my goal and making a step-by-step plan to achieve that goal, having a specified endpoint, in my experience, often becomes debilitating for my writing process. For one, I may become discouraged when I find that my first draft has nothing in common with Tolkien’s epic. Or, I may find that realism comes more naturally to me and feel frustrated that I am not following the path I had planned to take.

In contrast, approaching The Lord of the Rings as a direction (rather than as a goal) looks more like amassing a set of skills. For example, I might begin by practicing the technique of worldbuilding, or the creation of a fantasy world. I might then decide to try my hand at crafting memorable characters . This way, even if your tastes or goals evolve in the writing process (and they will!), you will have developed a skillset that is transferable to other forms of writing.

4. How to Learn to Write: Start

Every writer has a different starting point. For Louise Erdrich, it is often the voice of a character that helps her begin her novel. For others, it may be a narrative situation or personal experience. It is a good idea to experiment with different approaches to beginning. This allows you to not only learn what helps you write, but also challenge yourself as a writer.

When you’re just starting to learn how to write, expect that what you write won’t come out the way you want it. This is natural – all writers, even experienced ones, undergo this process. The important thing is to start and know that your writing does not have to be perfect at first try. The beauty of writing is that you don’t have to show it to anyone until you want to.

With that said, I suggest that you keep all of your writing, even if you don’t like it. You never know when you’ll find it interesting again!

5. How to Learn to Write: Use writing exercises

When the possibilities are endless, it can be difficult to begin. If you find yourself wavering, I recommend using a writing exercise to help jumpstart your process and learn how to write. Even if you don’t end up using what you generated, writing exercises are a great way to learn to write. To begin, check out this article !

If you’re in need of more prompts (and a supportive community!), our Facebook group is also a great resource.

6. How to Learn to Write: Understand the writing process

To learn how to write, it is essential to understand the nature of the writing process, which is often not as straightforward or linear as you think. Make no mistake: even accomplished writers go through multiple drafts, as the writer Anne Lamott shares in Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life . The good news, however, is that there is absolutely no pressure on your first draft—in fact, Lamott actively strives to write a “shitty first draft.”

Often, a piece of writing goes through massive changes from first draft to last. It is hard work, but the bright side of this is that you do not need to plan out the details of your book before you start writing. As the novelist E. L. Doctorow once said, “ Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”

In addition to working actively on your draft, it’s important to schedule in time for your draft to “rest,” too. Stephen King, for example, shares in On Writing: a Memoir of the Craft that he shuts his first draft up in his drawer for at least six weeks before revisiting it. This rest time, King explains, helps to create distance and allows the writer to assess their own writing in a more objective manner.

7. How to Learn to Write: Understand yourself.

Of the eight tips in this article, this is perhaps the most important point. By “understanding yourself,” I don’t mean “discovering” your “true self” or “psyche.” Instead, I mean understanding your habits, strengths, likes, and dislikes. In my experience, the most challenging part of learning to write is starting. Understanding what helps you to write on a practical level can alleviate this pressure and create the conditions you need to help your creative juices flow.

To begin, here is a list of things you might want to experiment with:

  • Writing requirements: Are you a pen and paper writer? Do you type? Do you do both? If you do both, do you write your first draft and type the second, or vice versa?
  • Physical space: Do you need to have your own room—where you will have no distractions—like Zadie Smith, or can you write at the dining table with children running around you, like Suzan Lori-Parks? Do you write best when you have a window you can look out of, or do you need to minimize distractions in your environment?
  • Daily schedules: When are you free and most productive? For Toni Morrison, who had young children when she first started writing, it was the time before sunrise. For H. P. Lovecraft, it was at night.
  • Routines: Although many say that writers have to write in the morning every single day, the best writing schedule, in my opinion, is one that makes sense for your own life. Do note that even if you have an established writing routine, it may change according to life circumstances. It’s important to be flexible and willing to try new approaches when you feel like your established routine no longer works.
  • Writerly tendencies: What genre captivates you, and what genre comes most intuitively to you? Note that these may not necessarily be the same! Personally, I started writing with the intention of writing fiction, but have since written more poetry and nonfiction. I’d encourage you to learn how to write in all three genres—what you find may surprise you!

8. How to Learn to Write: Seek resources

While writing is mostly a solitary activity, don’t underestimate the power of having a community! A writing group keeps you accountable, teaches you how to learn to write professionally, and provides a safe space for you to workshop an early draft. An authentic writing community, however, can be difficult to come by outside of a writing course.

For more tips on learning to write, I recommend the following books:

  • On Writing: a Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King
  • Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott
  • What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami
  • Recollections of My Nonexistence by Rebecca Solnit
  • The Writing Life by Annie Dillard

How to Write in English for Beginners: 12 Easy Tips for New Learners

Find a notebook and your favorite pen or pencil, then get comfortable.

We are going to write!

New learners often forget about English writing . They are usually focused on topics like vocabulary and grammar.

When you are beginning to learn English, however, it is really important to write regularly. Writing can help you learn English vocabulary, grammar, spelling and more!

Keep reading for 12 useful tips on how to write in English for beginners, so you can get the most out of your study time.

1. Practice writing in English every day

2. find the best time and place to write, 3. have a specific place to keep your english writing, 4. pick a topic to write about before you start, 5. keep a journal in english, 6. write more than one draft, 7. have a friend edit your english writing, 8. use an english dictionary when you study, 9. learn synonyms and antonyms in english, 10. make english vocabulary flashcards, 11. read english books (out loud), 12. translate songs and poems into english, and one more thing....

Repetition (doing the same thing over and over again) will really help you learn the skill of writing. Writing in English will be difficult at first, but if you write a little every day, it will start to get easier.

To make sure you never skip a day, use a system to track your progress. This could be writing it on your calendar, or using a site or app, such as Habit Daily Tracker .

You can also make use of techniques such as watching videos to inspire your writing. For example, this video from FluentU’s English YouTube channel has 50 common English verbs you can use later to write sentences:

Everyone has a best time of day to write. Maybe your head is the clearest in the morning. Maybe you’re a “night owl” (someone who likes to stay up late) and you are most creative at midnight. Try writing at different times of the day to find out what time works best for you.

After you know when to write, you will also want to know where to write. Maybe you have trouble writing where there is a lot of noise. In that case, try writing in a quiet place like a library. Maybe you need a little background noise, and so you write best in a busy coffee shop. Experiment and see what works for you.

If you need some background noise to write, you can use resources like Rainy Mood and Calm  for relaxing background noise.

Find a notebook to keep all of your writing in. By keeping it all in one place, you will be able to look back on your writing and see how much progress you’ve made. You will also be able to go through all of your writing at once to see if you keep making the same mistakes.

If you like typing on a computer instead, you might consider using  Evernote to keep your writing together. Evernote is a website (and smartphone app) that helps organize your life. You can keep all of your writing in Evernote, and you can also keep track of your writing schedule with the program’s calendar.

Another fun place to keep your writing is on  a blog . You can easily start a blog on Blogger or  WordPress , and you can either make the blog private (so only you can see it) or public (so others can read and comment).

When you’re ready to start writing, remember to choose a topic . Then, write anything you want about it .

If your topic is “fishing,” for example, it doesn’t matter if you write facts about fishing or a story about when you went fishing. Just write anything at all! Let your mind wander on the topic.

Set a timer for five minutes and write the entire time. Once you get used to this, write for 10 minutes at a time.

The point of this writing exercise isn’t to write a perfect story. The purpose is to get your brain thinking in English , and to see how much you are able to say about your topic.

If you can’t think of a topic, just start free writing . Free writing is when you put your pen on the paper and write everything that comes to your mind. It doesn’t matter if the ideas connect or not.

By keeping a personal journal (also called a diary) in English, you will make sure you write every day.

It is also a great way to practice writing multiple tenses . You will write in the past tense about all of the things you did during the day, and you will write in the future tense about the things you are planning to do tomorrow, for example.

When you know that you will write in your journal every day, you will probably start to think in English more often during the day. That’s because as you do things, you might think about how to write about them in English.

The first draft (copy) that you write is not going to be perfect. Write one draft, and then go back and review it for mistakes.

Remember the notebook you have for all your English writing? When you look for mistakes in your writing, you should make a list of your common mistakes in that notebook. Then, when you edit your first draft, check for those mistakes.

You can also use sites like  Hemingway Editor ,  WebFX’s Readability test ,  Grammar Check  or Reverso  to check spelling and grammar—but remember, these programs cannot find all mistakes.

Once you have reviewed your writing, go back and write the entire thing again . When you rewrite it with the correct grammar, spellings and tenses, you will learn the corrections.

You most likely will not find all of your own mistakes. After you check your own work, have a friend who is fluent in English edit your writing.

Having someone else look at your work will improve your writing and give you new, creative ways to express ideas in English. You can ask your friend to edit the whole document or just a part that you’re having trouble with.

It’s good to get a second opinion on your writing. If you don’t know anyone who can edit your writing, you can use HiNative to ask native English speakers short questions about your writing or how to say something in English.

If you want a more reliable way to have your writing corrected and are willing to pay for it, Editorr is a service that will edit a piece of writing within minutes.

You can then compare the edited piece to your original one, and learn from it for the next time you write. Editorr has real, qualified editors working for them, so you can feel assured (confident) that the corrections you receive are accurate.

When you are studying English and you hear or see a new word, look it up in your dictionary. Say the word a few times and write it down. Say it until it sounds familiar to your ear.

The next time you write, try to write at least one sentence with each new word. When you find words that you really like or that seem important, highlight them in the dictionary (it’s okay—it’s your dictionary).

If you don’t want to keep a physical (real-life) dictionary with you all the time, you can use online dictionaries like Merriam Webster or Dictionary.com . You can also use one of these dictionary apps for your smartphone .

Whenever you look up a new vocabulary word in English, try to learn at least one word with the same meaning (this is a synonym ), and one that has the opposite meaning (this is an antonym ).

For example, take the word “great.” Synonyms include “excellent” and “fantastic,” and some antonyms are “plain,” “ordinary” and “bad.” By learning more than one word for each concept, you will be able to communicate better when you write.

Here is a thesaurus , which is a dictionary full of synonyms and antonyms. On the website, you can type in a word and the thesaurus will give you a list of synonyms in orange, and antonyms in grey. A darker color means that synonym or antonym is more common.

Visual Thesaurus is another great resource you can use. It’s a little different from a regular thesaurus, because it shows you the links between words in a visual format, with lines between related words. This allows you to explore new words in an easy, fun way, while still seeing definitions and examples for context.

When you look up new words, their synonyms and their antonyms, make flashcards for them. On one side of the flashcard, write the word. On the other side, write the meaning, part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) and a sentence using that word.

Review your flashcards often. You can use a flashcard app to help you create and study them, if you want.

For example, the language learning program FluentU uses videos made by and for English speakers.

After you make flashcards of your new words, remember to try to use those words in your English writing practice, too.

As I said earlier, reading and writing are connected. That means reading more often in English will help you become a better writer.

Start out with simple books . Write down any words that are new to you, and practice saying them. Work your way up to books like “Harry Potter” or “The Hunger Games.” These books are written for young adults and older adults, but the language is still quite simple.

To really improve your English skills, read the books out loud . Instead of only saying new words, you can practice your pronunciation and speaking abilities by reading everything. Both reading quietly and reading out loud will help your writing skills.

You can get a library card to access thousands of free books from your local library. You can also join websites like Audible and listen to any book you’d like. Please note that Audible is free for the first 30 days, and then you will need to pay a fee.

Choose your favorite song in your native language, and translate the lyrics into English. Then, try singing it in English . You can even try to rewrite some of the lines in English to make them rhyme.

You can do the same thing with poems you love. The words used in songs and poems will likely be very different from the words you see every day in books, newspapers and even your journal.

By practicing songs, you’ll be able to practice writing, and you will also learn new ways to talk about concepts like love, faith, fear, rejection (being told “no”) and other topics usually addressed in music.

Lyrics Translate is a fun website that lets you choose an artist or song title and get translated lyrics form a huge selection of languages. You can also select the language and the website will give you a list of translated songs in that language.

The most important part of all these tips is to write in English regularly.

Learning to write in English will take time. You need to build your vocabulary, learn proper grammar and learn how to spell correctly.

However, the more often you practice your skills , the easier it will become. Have fun writing!
