The Queen: Her life in pictures – from a young princess to a steadfast monarch

  • Thursday 8 September 2022 at 8:43pm

The world has lost the Queen - Britain’s longest-serving monarch - who led a truly extraordinary life, from a young unassuming princess to a symbol of endurance and loyalty.

We look back at the Queen’s life in pictures and some of her most iconic moments.

Princess Elizabeth - daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York (the future King and Queen of England) waves from her carriage as she is driven around London in 1928. Born on April 21, 1926, she is the first-born of the royal couple.

The princess would later be joined by younger sister, Princess Margaret, born on August 21, 1930. The two sisters can be seen here in 1941 in the garden of their wartime country residence in Windsor. A petrol shortage during WWII meant their Royal Highnesses pony cart was brought into use.

Born a decade before the start of WWII, a young Elizabeth, or Lilibet as she was known in her youth, spent her childhood living through the chaos of war. She is seen here with Princess Margaret after they broadcast on "Children's Hour" from Buckingham Palace in 1940 – a radio address to the children of the Commonwealth.

It would be her first public speech to the world, in which she remarked “and when peace comes, remember it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place.”

Happiest followed for the young princess after the war, as she got engaged to Philip, a young cadet she had met in 1939 at Dartmouth’s Britannia Royal Naval College.

The engagement announcement came on 9 July 1947 and their wedding took place just four months later, with a ceremony at Westminster Abbey in front of millions on 20 November.

However, the royal couple’s carefree existence was halted upon the death of King George VI and young Elizabeth was thrust into the spotlight, becoming Queen Elizabeth II. Her coronation on 2 June 1953 was the first to be televised and it was watched by 27 million people in the UK alone.

The couple’s first two children arrived before the coronation, Charles in 1948, followed by Anne in 1950. The Queen and Prince Philip waited a decade before having their third child, Andrew in 1960 and Edward in 1964.

It was a lifetime of loyalty to her realm that defined her reign, with the Queen touring the UK, the Commonwealth and overseas hundreds of times.

She is seen here on a walkabout in Portsmouth and meeting children in Antigua in the Caribbean – both in 1977 during her Silver Jubilee tour.

The Queen has had a long-standing relationship with the Armed Forces, both in the UK and in the Commonwealth.

When she was just 18, she became the first female member of the royal family to serve in the armed forces, training as a mechanic and military truck driver. Since then, her bond with the army has remained close and she held many military appointments and honorary ranks.

Her birthday was celebrated every year with the great military display of Trooping of the Colour and for many years, she attended on horseback, dressed in full military uniform.

The Queen’s reign has not been without tragedy, most recently the death of her husband of 73 years Prince Philip in 2021. However, one of the most tragic losses the Queen, the royal family and the country had to endure was the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

She faced fierce criticism over her handling of the situation and not judging the public mood, but in a show of solidarity with the nation, she travelled to London to view the millions of tributes left for the ‘People’s Princess’ outside Buckingham Palace.

The Queen’s reign has also been laced with happy memories, including many weddings. The most recent was her granddaughter Princess Beatrice’s in 2020, which took place amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the Queen and Philip having to stand socially distanced away from the happy couple.

Her majesty also attended Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, where she waved and beamed at the newlyweds as they drove past.

A happy and longstanding marriage is something the Queen fostered, she spent 73 years married Prince Philip. On their golden wedding anniversary in 1997, she said Philip "has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years". They can be seen here celebrating their silver wedding anniversary in Balmoral in 1972.

Family has remained a cornerstone of the Queen.

The longest-serving monarch leaves behind four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Queen met every one of Britain’s prime ministers during her lifetime – beginning with  wartime leader, Sir Winston Churchill.    She met her final British prime minister, Liz Truss, at her Balmoral residence in Scotland in a landmark break from tradition, after it was recommended the monarch avoid travel.

SLIDESHOW: Highlights from the queen’s Platinum Jubilee in photos

By the associated press - | jun 6, 2022.

LONDON (AP) — Spectacular military parades, street parties up and down the country, drone and light shows at Buckingham Palace, and a surprising starring turn from Queen Elizabeth II and Paddington Bear: Britain’s four-day Platinum Jubilee extravaganza has been one long party demonstrating the extraordinary popularity of the monarch after 70 years on the throne.

Britain’s longest-reigning monarch only made three brief appearances during the long holiday weekend dedicated to marking her service. But the absence of the leading lady didn’t dampen the nation’s party atmosphere, with millions turning out for patriotic street shindigs, barbecues and picnics in their cities and villages.

The four days of celebrations were bookended by two Buckingham Palace balcony appearances by the 96-year-old queen — one on Thursday as festivities kicked off, and the other on Sunday at the finale of a massive street pageant.

Crowds erupted into three cheers as the queen waved and smiled on the balcony along with other working royals after the traditional Trooping the Color military parade on the first day.

She then attended a special beacon-lighting ceremony at Windsor Castle that night, but the brief appearances left her tired. She missed a service of thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral the next day.

The queen, who has curtailed her public appearances in recent months due to problems moving around, also skipped the prestigious Epsom Derby horse race and a pop concert staged outside Buckingham Palace on Saturday.

She did, however, delight the country when she starred with a computer-animated Paddington Bear in a comedy sketch played at the start of the concert. The video showed the queen sharing a chaotic afternoon tea with the furry character — and revealing that she stored marmalade sandwiches in her famous black handbag.

The concert, headlined by Diana Ross, the rock band Queen and others, thrilled a crowd of 22,000 with drones flying over the palace that created a giant corgi and teapot in the sky.

Crowds of tens of thousands packed the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace for the climax of the festivities, which saw a huge, colorful pageant parade through central London Sunday,

The gold state coach, which transported the queen to her coronation in 1953, led the procession. A hologram of Elizabeth as she looked 69 years ago was shown at the coach’s windows, a poignant reminder of how young she was when she acceded to the throne.

That was followed by 6,000 performers who told the story of the queen’s life along with a parade of vintage cars, double-decker buses, a giant moving wedding cake and huge puppets.

Crowds sang “God Save The Queen” and the queen made her second palace balcony appearance, flanked only by those in the immediate line of succession and two future queen consorts.

It was a closing image that prepared the nation for the future of the monarchy.

Queen Elizabeth II

The world is in shock over the death of England’s beloved, long-reigning Queen Elizabeth II. Confirmed by the royal family’s official Twitter account, Queen Elizabeth died peacefully at Balmoral on Thursday afternoon at the age of 96. She reigned as a steady fixture for 70 years alongside 15 different prime ministers, meeting 13 US presidents during her tenure.

As the world collectively mourns her death, we want to revisit the iconic matriarch’s most regal moments during her 70-year reign. From her wedding to Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in 1947 and the embraces she frequently bestowed on former First Lady Michelle Obama to her powerful presence at the State Opening of Parliament and her complete respect and attention at Commonwealth Realm receptions, there are almost too many regal moments to make note of during her seven-decade rule.

In honor of her extraordinary life and historic reign, read on for Queen Elizabeth II’s most majestic, monumental, and inspiring moments as Queen of England.

Queen Elizabeth’s First Royal Portrait (1952)

slide show queen

Queen Elizabeth had her first royal portrait taken in 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI. She looked stoic in her gilded crown, diamond-crusted necklace, and elegant ballgown.

Captured in Carriage (1952)

slide show queen

Cameras captured Queen Elizabeth on her way to her first State Opening of Parliament as monarch in 1952. She looked slightly breathless, but ready to take on her role.

From Princess to Queen (1953)

slide show queen

In a scene of stunning regalia, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip sit in the wildly ornate coronation coach, soon on their way to Her Majesty’s crowning at Westminster Abbey.

Officially Queen (1953)

Queen Elizabeth, wearing the Imperial State Crown and carrying the Orb, is captured arriving at Buckingham Palace from Westminster Abbey after her coronation ceremony. She was dressed in full royal regalia for the momentous occasion.

Coronation Day (1953)

The newly crowned Queen Elizabeth, alongside Prince Philip, jovially waved to cheering crowds on the day of their coronation in 1953.

The Queen & Her Prime Minister (1953)

slide show queen

Balancing her roles as mom and ruler, Queen Elizabeth chatted with Sir Winston Churchill, then Prime Minister, with Prince Charles and Princess Anne looking rather distracted at her side. The Queen looked regal in her fur-collared coat, gloves, and fascinator.

The Princess & The Queen (1954)

slide show queen

Her Majesty the Queen enjoyed a magnificent evening at Tivoli Theater with Princess Margaret in 1954. The Duke of Edinburgh attended as well, socializing with other esteemed guests.

Prim but Powerful (1956)

slide show queen

During her 1956 Commonwealth Tour, Queen Elizabeth II inspected the men of the newly-renamed Queen’s Own Nigeria Regiment, Royal West African Frontier Force, at the Kaduna Airport in Nigeria. She looked dainty and prim in her feminine attire, but she took command of her ruling role.

Magnificent Monarch (1957)

slide show queen

Queen Elizabeth posed for an updated royal portrait in 1957, four years following her taking the throne. She looked resplendent in a heavily-jeweled crown with additional precious stones around her neck, again wearing an elegantly patterned ballgown fit for Her Majesty.

A Confident Queen (1958)

slide show queen

Queen Elizabeth posed for her 1958 portrait at home in Buckingham Palace. While she looked wide-eyed and exhilarated during the first few years of her reign, her body language and facial expressions were beginning to look more comfortable and relaxed as she climbed toward her first full decade in power.

Keeping Up With the Kennedys (1961)

slide show queen

In 1961, Queen Elizabeth held a banquet at Buckingham Palace in honor of President John F. Kennedy. The two world leaders posed for a photo with their spouses, Prince Philip and First Lady Jackie Kennedy.

The Picture of Power (1966)

slide show queen

It doesn’t get much more regal than sitting on a centuries-old throne made of gold while wearing one of the most intricate crowns to ever grace the earth. Queen Elizabeth looked on from her gilded seat during the 1966 State Opening of Parliament with a reserved, if not somewhat removed, expression.

Reigning in Robe (1968)

slide show queen

Wrapped in the Star of the Order, which bears the motto ‘Auspicium Melioris Aevi,’ Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip rode to a service for the Order of St. Michael and St. George at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1968. Her Majesty matched her royal blue cape with a diamond and sapphire-crusted crown.

Dripping in Diamonds (1976)

slide show queen

In the United States for a state banquet, Queen Elizabeth was absolutely decked out in diamonds for the Americans. Her jewelry was just as magnificent as her role as a world leader.

Dancing With the President (1976)

slide show queen

During the 1976 Bicentennial Celebrations of the Declaration of Independence, Queen Elizabeth enjoyed a friendly foray on the dance floor with President Gerald Ford. She looked stunning in a glittering tiara, honey-colored gown, and diamond jewelry.

Silver Jubilee Smiles (1977)

slide show queen

Queen Elizabeth beamed brilliantly at a Royal Gala performance during her Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977. She looked radiant in a rubies-and-cream-themed ensemble.

Settled in as Sovereign (1987)

slide show queen

After nearly 40 years of serving as Queen, Her Majesty posed for a fresh portrait, this time in the Green Room at Windsor Castle. She of course looked extremely elegant, with her diamond-crusted crown and necklace having a mirror-like effect.

Poised & Powerful (1987)

slide show queen

Prince Philip joined The Queen in the Green Room for a couples portrait — the pair looked poised and in power.

Fashionable in France (1992)

slide show queen

During a visit to France in 1992, Queen Elizabeth wore a monochromatic pink and mauve-toned ensemble — a look that was pretty bold, by her standards. As The Queen aged, she seemed to have more fun with fashion while maintaining her regal presence.

Shining in the State Diadem (2002)

slide show queen

Arriving at the Palace Of Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament, The Queen looked on at her audience with a powerful presence. She wore the State Diadem, a diamond crown made for the coronation of George IV.

Our Guiding Light (2004)

slide show queen

Looking lovely as ever, The Queen was captured by a photographer as she rode by in carriage on her way to another State Opening of Parliament ceremony. The sharp contrast between her bright figure and Prince Philip’s shadowy silhouette offers a visual narrative of the royal couple’s oftentimes tumultuous power dynamic.

Gilded in Giggles (2005)

slide show queen

While Queen Elizabeth struggled to hold back giggles at the sight of Prince Philip standing to attention in his uniform and bearskin hat, it’s undeniable that they both look regal in their own right.

Jolly at the Golden Jubilee (2002)

slide show queen

Celebrating her Golden Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip rode in an open-top car on their way to watch a parade, smiling and waving at crowds gathered in their honor along the way.

Celebrating 60 Years (2007)

slide show queen

Photographed for their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in 2007, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip revisited the Broadlands, where they spent their wedding night in 1947. They looked stately with the beautiful residence sprawling behind them.

Doing Her Duty (2014)

slide show queen

Queen Elizabeth took her role as the UK’s ruler incredibly seriously, and you could always find her presiding over a State Opening of Parliament. In 2014, she sat with Prince Philip in their intricate thrones with that mesmerizing crown atop her head.

Cheers at the Trooping of Colour (2016)

slide show queen

Standing alongside the future king, Prince William, and his wife and children, Duchess Kate, Princess Charlotte, and Prince George, The Queen looked elated. The family stood on the balcony during the 2016 Trooping the Colour, that year marking Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. She made 90 look as fabulous as ever in a playful yet still regal lime green ensemble.

A Patron of the People (2016)

slide show queen

In a photo that’s overflowing with regal splendor, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip waved to crowds gathered for The Patron’s Lunch celebrations in honor of The Queen’s 90th birthday. From Buckingham Palace looming large in the background and the streets absolutely bursting with people to the luxury Range Rover that the royal couple greeted fans from, the scene is one of ostentatious, breathtaking regality.

Greeting Guests at a Diplomatic Corps Reception (2019)

slide show queen

Looking elegant as ever and dripping in her signature jewels, Queen Elizabeth socialized with guests at an evening reception for members of the Diplomatic Corps at Buckingham Palace.

Back Home at Balmoral (2021)

Flanked by The Royal Regiment of Scotland at the gates of Balmoral, Queen Elizabeth moved to her summer residence in 2021, where she would spend the majority of her remaining days.

3 Modern Royals Have Come Out as LGBTQ+, Including 1 of Queen Elizabeth's Relatives

Lord Ivar Mountbatten

Lord Ivar Mountbatten

Lord Ivar Mountbatten isn’t a working member of the British royal family. However, he was one of Queen Elizabeth ‘s cousin. He came out as gay in a 2016 interview with The Times . In the interview, he revealed that he was in a relationship with James Coyle . The pair married two years later in 2018.

“I am a lot happier now, though I am still not 100% comfortable with being gay,” he said upon coming out.

Before opening up about his sexuality, Lord Ivar was married to Penny Mountbatten . He fathered three daughters with her. The former couple remained close enough that Penny gave him away when he and James got married. “It was the girls’ idea,” she told the Daily Mail . “It makes me feel quite emotional. I’m really very touched.”

“What I don’t think Ivar realises is how much he has changed as a man since he ‘came out’. James is hugely responsible for that because he’s so much fun,” she continued. “He probably wasn’t even aware that by keeping his sexuality a secret it was really quite tormenting him. Now it’s ‘out’ he’s a completely different person. Everybody says they’ve never seen him happier.”

In the same interview, Lord Ivar revealed that he had the support of the royal family, particularly Queen Elizabeth ‘s youngest son Prince Edward .

What is a slide show maker?

The full range of slide show features and functionality varies from program to program.

Once you’ve created a slide show, it can be published on the internet or shared with others as a video file. Additionally, you can use slide shows to create dynamic, interactive content on websites.

What you need to make a slide show

When it comes to creating a slide show, there are a few things you'll need to get started. First and foremost, you'll need a device equipped with presentation software or access to an online slide show app. Secondly, you’ll need a way to display your slide show, which usually means connecting your device to a projector or big screen TV. Beyond that, you’ll need some visual aids and other media to bring your slide show to life.

Explore each of these slide show requirements in more detail:

Devices and equipment —To create a slide show, you’ll use a computer or other device—such as a tablet or mobile phone—with PowerPoint or a similar program installed. You will also need a way to project the slides onto a screen or wall. This can be done with a projector, but if you don't have one available, you can use your TV or computer monitor. Simply connect your device to the TV or monitor using an HDMI cable and select the correct input. Your slides will now be projected onto the screen.

Media —Of course, creating a slide show requires media that adds visual and even audio elements to your presentation. This can be anything from photos and videos to music and text. You can use search engines to find copyright-free media to use in your slide show.

Another option is to purchase royalty-free stock footage, images, and audio files from online media libraries. This could be a bit more expensive, but it guarantees that you have the legal right to use the media in your presentation.

Finally, you can also use your own videos, images, and even music. While this can be a time-consuming process, it does allow you to create custom content specifically for your slide show.

Slide show creator —To bring your slide show together, you’ll need a slide show creator. The slide show software you choose will depend on your presentation requirements and preferences. There are many slide show makers on the market, with Microsoft PowerPoint being one of the most popular and widely used programs globally.

How to choose a slide show maker

When choosing slide show software, it's important to consider the features and specifications that are most important to you. Some of the questions you might ask when choosing a slide show maker include:

  • How easy is the software to use?
  • Is the software Mac or PC compatible?
  • Can I access and edit my slide show on the cloud?
  • What kind of slide shows can be created with the software?
  • How many photos and/or videos can be included in a slide show?
  • Can text and other elements be added to slide shows?
  • Are transitions and effects available for slide shows?
  • Is music accompaniment an option?
  • What are the options for saving and sharing your slide show?

Building a slide show doesn't have to be difficult. With the right software, you can create an engaging presentation in no time.

Six steps for creating a slide show

1. Plan your slide show

Before getting too deep into your slide show project, it’s a good idea to select and save the photos and videos you want to use. This helps you create a slide show more efficiently and purposefully, ensuring a better outcome.

4. Import media

Start adding photos, videos, and other desired media to your slides. You can upload these from your device or online media libraries. If you planned your slide show in advance, you should have all your media saved in one place.

2. Launch your slide show app

Once you’ve decided on a slide show maker, you’ll want to launch the app from whatever device you’ll be using to create your presentation.

5. Add text, music, and transitions

After you’ve arranged the visuals in your slide show, you can provide additional information and communicate sentiment using custom text, music, and timed slide transitions.

3. Choose your theme

Most slide show software offers a variety of pre-set themes, colors, and designs. You can choose one that best suits your slide show or create a custom theme using the program’s various tools and features.

6. Record, save, and share your slide show

Now you’re ready to record your slide show, which can include a voiceover or Cameo . Once your slide show is complete, you can save it as a video to your device or to the cloud, such as OneDrive . You can access your saved slide show at any time to display at events, use in meetings, share online, or send directly to other people.

How to make a slide show with photos

Adding photos to your slide show is a great way to enliven your presentation and make it more visually interesting. Here are a few different ways you can add photos to your slide show in PowerPoint.

A user adding photos to their PowerPoint presentation

Add photos from your device

Whether you’re using a computer, tablet, phone, or other device, you can use photos that are saved to your device to create your slide show. In PowerPoint, simply select “Insert” then “Pictures” from the program menu, then choose “This Device.” This will open your photo library and allow you to find the photos you want to use. Once you’ve selected the photos that you want to import, just click on the "Insert" button and they will be added to your slide show. If you’re using a pre-made theme, you can also right-click the image in the slide show and select “Change Picture.” Again, you will choose “This Device” to access your photo library. After inserting your photo, you can reposition it on your slide or resize it however you like.

Two people looking at a laptop and pointing at the screen

Use stock photos

Another way to add photos in PowerPoint is to follow the same process you would when adding photos from your device, but when prompted to choose your photo source, select “From Stock Images” instead of “This Device.” This will display a library of photos that you can use in your slide show without worrying about copyright infringement. There are thousands of stock images available in most slide show maker programs. Once the library is open, you can explore existing photo categories or use keywords to search for photos that fit your needs.

Explore online photo sources

Online photos are images you can insert into a PowerPoint slide show directly from the internet, as opposed to using those you have saved on your device. This is a convenient option if you don't have photos already prepared for your slide show, or if you can’t find the right kind of photo in the stock image library. However, there are some potential risks associated with using online photos, namely that you must be careful to use royalty-free images so not to infringe on any copyrights. In PowerPoint, there is a filtering option to ensure your search results only show royalty-free photos. Inserting photos from online sources follows the same process as the previous two methods, but this time, you’ll select “From Online Sources.”

How to add videos, music, and text

How to add videos to PowerPoint slide shows

Adding videos to your slide show involves accessing videos from your device, a stock video library, or online video sources—just as you would when adding photos. In this case, however, you’ll navigate to the menu in PowerPoint and select “Insert,” followed by “Media,” then “Video.” Once your video appears on your slide, you can resize or reposition it to fit your presentation needs. You can also set your video to play automatically in the slide show by selecting “Playback” on the menu and choosing “Start Automatically.”

How to add music to PowerPoint slide shows

Much like adding videos, you can add music to individual slides in PowerPoint by navigating to “Insert” on the menu, then “Media,” and finally “Audio.” You can then import music from your device, or you can record your own audio directly in PowerPoint. However, if you want your audio to play across multiple slides in your presentation—for example, as background music for a slide show—you’ll have to take a couple of extra steps. Once you’ve imported your audio file, select “Playback” from the menu and choose the “Play in Background” option. Your music will now play across all slides. You can set one song to loop for the duration of the slide show, or you can add more songs to play continuously throughout the slide show.

How to add text to PowerPoint slide shows

Premade themes in PowerPoint make adding text slide shows easy. On slides that already have templated content, you can simply click on the text and begin editing. In addition to changing what the text says, you can resize, recolor, reposition, and add special effects to the text. Of course, you can also change the font—or style—of the text. Most of this can be done from the “Home” tab on the menu while certain effects, such as shadows, can be found on the “Shape Format” tab. If you’re designing your presentation slides from scratch, or want to create additional text, find “Insert” on the menu, then choose “Text Box” or “Word Art,” depending on your desired text effect.

Discover custom slide show settings

Add even more effects to your PowerPoint slide show with custom settings like timing, transitions, and looping.

Set slide show timing

Adding timing to your slide show is a great way to control the pacing and flow of your presentation. To add timing in PowerPoint, go to the "Transitions" tab on the menu and find the "Advance Slide" area. Make sure the box next to “After:” is checked, then input the amount of time you’d like each slide to appear on-screen. The slides will automatically advance, creating a movie-like effect that’s great for events and special occasions.

Create slide show transitions

Now that you’ve added automatic timing to your slide show, you can make it more visually appealing by creating slide transitions. Transitions are special effects that allow you to animate the way your slides change from one to the next, and there are a variety of different transitions in PowerPoint that you can choose from. You can add these transitions to your slide show from the "Transitions” tab. From there, you’ll select the transition you want to add. To preview the transition, simply click on it. You can click “Apply To All” to automatically add the same transition to every slide in your slide show, or you can manually add different transitions to different slides.

Loop your slide show

If you want your slide show to play continuously until you choose to turn it off, you can set your PowerPoint presentation to loop. This will ensure your slide show automatically starts over from the beginning once it reaches the end. To get started, navigate to the “Slide Show” tab on the menu and select “Set Up Slide Show.” When the settings window opens, check the box next to “Loop continuously until ‘ESC’” and then click “OK.” When you’re ready to turn your slide show off, simply press the Esc key on your keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

What are slide show apps and software.

Slide show apps and software are used to create and share slide shows. Slide show programs are typically used to communicate information, diagrams, plans, or processes. They can also be used to display photos and videos at events or retail stores. Usually, slide show makers have a range of built-in features and layouts, making them easy to use, regardless of technical skill levels.

What should a slide show include?

An effective slide show should be engaging, visually appealing, and informative. To achieve this, you'll want to make sure to include the following elements:

  • A catchy headline or title. This will help grab your audience's attention and set the tone for the rest of your presentation.
  • A variety of images. Don't just rely on text—incorporate photos, illustrations, or even video to maximize viewership.
  • Bullet points or short blocks of text. Keep your slide content concise and easy to digest; too much information will only overwhelm your viewers.

There are a few different ways to make picture slide shows. You can use online programs, or you can create a slide show directly on your computer, phone, tablet, or other device using slide show software. Some programs, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, can be accessed on your personal device and on the cloud.

How long should a slide show be?

The length of your slide show will depend on several factors, such as the topic of your presentation, the audience you're presenting to, and the amount of time you have. That said, slide shows are generally between five and ten minutes long.

How can I make a slide show better?

Here are a few tips to make your slide show more engaging:

  • Add images, videos, and music to bring your slide show to life.
  • Use a font that is easy to read from a distance.
  • Try not to use too many words on each slide.
  • Use custom transitions and timing to make your slide show flow.
  • Ensure a cohesive slide show by using a theme or template.
  • For live presentations, practice with the Speaker Coach feature .

The Best Looks from the 2024 NAACP Image Awards

By Leah Faye Cooper

Another weekend, another fashionable awards show red carpet. Last Night, the 55th Annual NAACP Image Awards were held in Los Angeles, honoring Black performers across film, television and music. Hosted by Queen Latifah and aired live on BET, the awards saw a who's who of Hollywood in attendance: Oprah , Kerry Washington, Usher , and Keke Palmer were all there; Quinta Brunson, Idris Elba, Taraji P. Henson, and Damson Idris were, too.

The celebratory evening included a performance by Adra Day and the induction of New Edition into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. On the awards front, “The Color Purple” emerged as the big winner of the night, with Fantasia Barrino taking home the trophy for Outstanding Actress; Henson and awards season darling Colman Domingo winning for their supporting roles; and the film nabbing Outstanding Motion Picture. Following his wildly successful Las Vegas residency and unforgettable Super Bowl LVIII halftime show, Usher was named Entertainer of the Year. The performer also took home the President's Award for years of public service through his New Look foundation, aimed at uplifting underserved youth.

Fashion took center stage as well. Veteran stylist June Ambrose —dressed in a dramatic, floral-motif Bibhu Mohapatra dress—was honored with the Vanguard Award, and Queen Latifah commanded the ceremony in several looks styled by Jason Rembert, among them a regal Harbison Studio gown and a caped Oscar de La Renta dress. The carpet saw a mix of famed houses (Yara Shahidi in Ferragamo ) and emerging, independent labels (India Amarteifio in Tolu Coker ). Translation: this was our kind of night. Ahead, all the best looks from the 2024 NAACP Image Awards.
