The MSK Library's Systematic Review Service

Welcome to the Systematic Review Service LibGuide. A systematic review may be undertaken to confirm or refute whether or not current practice is based on relevant evidence, to establish the quality of that evidence, and to address and/or recommend changes.  If you are not sure that a Systematic Review is the right approach for your research, Cornell University Library has developed a decision tree to help researchers determine the best review methodology that fits their timeline, question scope, and desired outcome.

Once you decide that you want to conduct a systematic review with your team, the Getting Started tab ( Documents for Researchers) , has our Systematic Review Search Request form . Your request will be reviewed and a research informationist will be assigned to work with you and your team. The Getting Started tab outlines how we support and contribute to the completion of your systematic review.

What is a SR?

Systematic Reviews (SRs) are a form of Evidence-Based Practice .

They are scientific investigations in themselves, with pre-planned methods and an assembly of original studies as their “subjects.” They synthesize the results of multiple primary investigations by using strategies that limit bias and random error... These strategies include a comprehensive search of all potentially relevant articles and the use of explicit, reproducible criteria in the selection of articles for review. Primary research designs and study characteristics are appraised, data are synthesized, and results are interpreted.

What is a Scoping Review?

Preliminary assessment of potential size and scope of available research literature. Scoping reviews are often a first step in conducting a SR because it allows the investigator the opportunity to review the literature landscape and determine whether or not a SR is feasible (too much or too little publications). This type of review takes the same systematic and rigorous methodologies used in conducting an SR.

Support for Including a Research Informationist on the SR Team

The National Academies' standards for systematic reviews  (3.1.1) states: work with a librarian or other information specialist trained in performing systematic reviews to plan the search strategy. The MSK research informationist's team has collaborated with researchers on a number of systematic reviews. Before a research informationist can be part of our Systematic Review Service, they must attend formal training to hone their search expertise and be able to provide guidance on the systematic review process.

A paper published online in February 2019 advocates the value of including a research librarian in the development of a robust and comprehensive search strategy.  Literature gaps could be addressed/avoided by having the expertise of a research informationist. This is an open access paper available from BMC Public Healh, entitled "Systematic review searches must be systematic, comprehensive, and transparent: A critque of Perman et al."

A paper published online (February 5, 2015) in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology entitled, "Librarian co-authors correlated with higher quality reported search strategies in general internal medicine systematic reviews" shows that engaging a librarian or information professional on the systematic review team is a potential way to help improve documentation of the search strategy.

A paper published online (Nov 2014) in the Journal of the American Informatics Association entitled, " Effects of librarian-provided services in healthcare settings: a systematic review" concluded that librarian-provided services directed to participants in training programs improved skills in literature searching and facilitated the integration of research evidence into clinical decision-making; that these services save time for health care professionals and supported informed decisions.  In addition, two studies illustrated patient length of stay was reduced when clinicians requested literature searches related to a patient's case.

  • Systematic Review Toolbox

A systematic review attempts to identify, appraise and synthesize all the empirical evidence that meets pre-specified eligibility criteria to answer a given research question. Researchers conducting systematic reviews use explicit methods aimed at minimizing bias, in order to produce more reliable findings that can be used to inform decision making. (See Section 1.2 in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions ).

You might undertake a systematic review under the following circumstances:

  • You want to bring together all the known research on a topic
  • There are conflicting findings in existing research
  • There are underpowered studies with non-significant outcomes in your field
  • You want to see how others have addressed a question
  • Existing systematic reviews don't cover the population/study type you are interested in

Adapted from Salis, A. Systematically review the literature [Webinar]. Salis Institute. https://www.salisinstitute.com/

This video from The Evidence Synthesis Academy at Brown University walks you through the basic steps on how to conduct a systematic review.

For more detail, please consult the  Systematic Review Process  page.

The following resources are essential to a successful systematic review:

Time. Systematic reviews can take between 6-18 months (or more) to complete and publish.

Documentation. Searches must be reproducible, so you'll have to have a documented search strategy and process. You can use something as simple as a notebook or a spreadsheet, although software is available. It is recommended that you register your review ahead of time in a systematic review protocol database such as PROSPERO .

Personnel. The Cochrane Handbook recommends that systematic reviews be undertaken by more than one person. The team should include subject experts as well as those to assist with searching and screening literature. It can be helpful to include an experienced systematic review author on your team. Librarians can provide guidance on search strategies, documentation and resources.

Information resources. Systematic reviews require extensive literature searching of both subscription and free databases, and possibly grey literature .

For more detail, please consult the Systematic Review Process page.

The Systematic Review Toolbox developed by University of York is an online catalogue of tools that support various tasks within the systematic review and wider evidence synthesis process.

Databases   The NIH Library provides access to three primary databases used for most systematic reviews, in addition to many others:

  • Cochrane Library   Contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform health care decision making, including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). CENTRAL is a curated registry of randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials conducted worldwide. Search using keywords or controlled vocabulary terms, and export results to a citation management tool.
  • Embase   Allows users to build comprehensive literature searches through its extensive, deeply indexed database and flexible search options. By applying the PICO (Patient or Problem; Intervention; Comparison or Control; and Outcome) framework, users can structure searches that address clinical questions. Users can search Embase by keywords, controlled vocabulary terms, or use a special search feature to find literature on drugs, medical devices, pharmacovigilance, and more.
  • PubMed/MEDLINE   Features advanced search functions and filters to find literature for your systematic review. Search using keywords and controlled vocabulary terms from MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) to focus your search and find relevant information.

Systematic Review Service @ ECU: Systematic Review Process

  • About Systematic Reviews
  • Other Review Types
  • Systematic Review Process
  • Appraisal in a Systematic Review
  • Educational Opportunities
  • Systematic Reviews for the Medical Family Therapy Student

General steps in a systematic review

1. Select the team ( *remember to involve a librarian at this stage* ).

  • Systematic reviews cannot be performed by just one person. The screening process requires a minimum of two people familiar with the subject matter, and a third reviewer is often involved in resolving conflicting decisions later in the review process.

2. Define the review question and eligibility inclusion/exclusion criteria.( *librarian contribution* )

  • In order to feasibly compare and synthesize the results of included studies, a  narrowly defined  question is more appropriate.

3. Identify all potentially eligible studies. ( *librarian contribution* )

  • Systematic review search strategies are critically important; given that studies are the subjects of a systematic reviews, the search strategy used to identify studies can be considered equivalent to human subjects recruitment methods in terms of its critical importance in determining the representativeness of the sample and guarding against biased selection.

4. Register the protocol prior to screening studies

  • to avoid duplication of multiple reviews addressing the same question.
  • to establish a review and allow editorial referees to provide guidance and advice throughout the process
  • to help the review process remain systematic, unbiased and well-defined.
  • to help ensure your chance of publication. An increasing number of journals recommend or require that a protocol have been registered.
  • PROSPERO  - international prospective register of systematic reviews in  health and social care . One major purpose of PROSPERO is to reduce duplication of reviews, and promote efficient use of resources.
  • Cochrane Collaboration  - international organization, produces and disseminates systematic reviews of  health care interventions .
  • Campbell Collaboration  - produces systematic reviews of the effects of  social interventions .

5. Apply the pre-specified eligibility criteria to select studies for inclusion and keep track of the data.

  • The screening process occurs in two phases: an initial screening of titles and abstracts, followed by reviewing the full text of articles that were included during the title/abstract screen.

6. Assess the methodology of studies to determine risk of bias.

  • Many tools for risk of bias assessment exist. For assistance in locating an appropriate risk of bias assessment tool, please work with the librarian.
  • *Keep in mind that for systematic reviews, risk of bias assessment addresses the methodological quality of your included studies; this is not to be confused with publication bias, which may be a second, pooled assessment of bias, particularly for meta-analyses.

7. Analyze the data and begin your meta-analysis of the included studies.

8. Address any reporting bias that may exist.

9. Prepare a structured report of the research.  ( *librarian contribution to the methods section* )

  • The required elements of a systematic review or systematic review and meta-analysis vary slightly with the standards you use, but a commonly used standard is the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses ( PRISMA ). PRISMA provides a checklist that can help you structure the report and ensure you have reported the required elements.

How Countries Reform Their Curricula to Support the Development of Key Competences

  • Kirill Barannikov, Igor Remorenko, Isak Froumin

This edited book is a unique comprehensive discussion of 21 st  century skills in education in a comparative perspective. It presents investigation on how eight very different countries (China, Canada, England, Finland, Poland, South Korea, the USA and Russia) have attempted to integrate key competences and new literacies into their curricula and balance them with the acquisition of disciplinary knowledge. Bringing together psychological, sociological, pedagogical approaches, the book also explores theoretical underpinnings of 21 st  century skills and offers a scalable solution to align multiple competency and literacy frameworks.

The book provides a conceptual framework for curriculum reform and transformation of school practice designed to ensure that every school graduate thrives in our technologically and culturally changing world. By providing eight empirical portraits of competence-driven curriculum reform, this book is great resource to educational researchers and policy makers.

Private Jet Interiors

Moscow private jets by interiors and rates.

Light jets and very light jets are cost-effective solutions for shorter flights to and from Moscow. These aircraft are ideal for individual travel, accommodating 4 to 6 passengers, and boast lower hourly rates, starting at $2,600, and a non-stop range of 1100 to 1900 nautical miles.

For those seeking to travel farther and enjoy non-stop travel across the country, midsize and super-midsize jets offer the perfect balance of range, speed, and passenger capacity. These aircraft can accommodate up to 8 passengers, with a non-stop range of 1300 to 4000 nautical miles and hourly rates starting at $3200.

For those who require the ultimate in luxury, speed, and range, large and ultra-long-range jets are the pinnacle of private aviation. These aircraft are particularly suitable for coast-to-coast or intercontinental flights, accommodating up to 16 passengers in the utmost comfort with a range of 3600 to 6700 nautical miles and hourly rates starting at $5600.

Although the interior design of the aircraft may vary from one aircraft to another, the seating configurations will generally look like the sample interior pictures provided.

Moscow aircraft, aircraft available locally by jet type and age, estimate private flight prices to and from moscow, charter jets faq, your ultimate moscow charter resource, do i have to stop for customs when i fly on a private jet.

Passengers on all international private charter flights will have to stop at customs. In certain countries, you may have to go through customs at a specific port of entry; for example, you must stop in Tahiti to perform customs checks en route to Bora Bora. You’ll also need to stop at the first port of entry when entering the U.S. from Mexico.

How much rest does the crew need before they can depart again?

Crew members are required to have a 10-hour rest period within each 24-hour cycle. The maximum duty day is 14 hours and must be followed by a 10-hour rest period at their hotel. When scheduling a flight, operators usually account for 12 hours of rest instead of 10. These extra two hours allow the crew time to get to their hotel, rest for the required time, and return to the airport.

How long does a fuel stop for a private jet flight take?

The average fuel stop takes 45–60 minutes. To speed up fuel stops, the operator, or pilots may call ahead, so a fuel truck is waiting for the aircraft on arrival. For smaller jets, a fuel stop can take as little as 30 minutes.

Will my private jet charter use the same airport as a commercial airline?

No. When you charter a private jet, you generally fly into a private airport. However, you could access the same airports as a commercial airline if you request to do so or if there are no private airport options. However, using a large mainstream airport like Los Angeles International or London Heathrow is often a bad choice for private jets, as flying to a smaller regional private airport is much faster and often makes for a more luxurious experience.

Is the age of an aircraft a safety factor?

Aircraft age is not a safety factor. However, if the aircraft is older and hasn’t been refurbished properly, it may cause flyers some inconvenience, such as overheating, faulty air conditioning, or faulty plumbing in the lavatory.

How much luggage am I allowed to bring on a private jet?

As a rule of thumb, each seat on a light or midsize jet equates to one passenger and one item of luggage. Each item of luggage is considered to be the standard 23 kilograms, or about 50 lbs. Large jets are designed for long-range trips, which typically involve longer stays, so you can carry more than one item of luggage per person.

Are there aircraft that are wheelchair accessible?

There are many aircraft that are wheelchair accessible. Most of them are large jets or above and have a straight aisle. If the jet has a zigzag aisle – like the Falcon 900 – it will be difficult to maneuver the wheelchair onboard the aircraft. You’ll also need the right type of wheelchair; many motorized wheelchairs won’t fit and can’t be collapsed. If this is the case, you’ll need a smaller, temporary wheelchair. Some aircraft operators have smaller wheelchairs that can be used. Please speak with your Paramount private jet expert to review your aircraft options.

Can I fly with large sums of cash?

Yes, you can. This is a common occurrence for many private jet clients. You can fly with up to $5 million in cash as long as you declare that cash when coming through customs. For domestic trips, there’s no limit and no need to declare it.

Which private jets come with flight attendants?

In the United States, large jets and above are required to have flight attendants onboard; in Europe, flight attendants are used on midsize jets and above. Flight attendants require their own seats. Larger jets and above have a jump seat near the cockpit for the flight attendant to use, meaning the attendant generally stays out of the cabin.

Which airports offer ramp access, allowing the client to drive their car right up to their private jet?

Private jet clients can often have a limo drive them right up to the private jet, or even drive their own car to the plane. That said, different airports have different policies, and some may not offer ramp access. Please speak with your Paramount Aviation Advisor to review your options for a given trip.

Do private jets come with Wi-Fi?

Many private jets do have Wi-Fi, and it’s increasingly available free of charge on U.S. domestic flights. On international flights, prices range from $3.00-$8.50 USD per megabyte used. This means that opening up social media sites that are rich in images and videos could quickly cost you $20 – and downloading a feature-length movie could cost thousands!

When is on-demand private jet charter better than buying a block of hours?

Private jet charter can be a lot cheaper than buying a block of hours for a one-way flight, as you can access floating fleets or an empty leg to reduce the cost. With a block of hours, the price covers a round trip. If you only fly one-way, you are effectively paying double.

What is a carbon-neutral flight?

Every aircraft burns jet fuel and emits a certain amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. This can be offset via one of several carbon offset programs that allow private jet clients to purchase a certain number of carbon credits to offset the emissions from their flights. A carbon-neutral flight is one that offsets the carbon emissions it uses via a formal process.

Can I have a flexible departure time for my private jet flight?

Yes, it is possible to have a flexible departure when flying privately. Operators typically offer a 30-minute to two-hour window, but you can request a longer window as long as it doesn’t interfere with the maximum crew duty day or their next scheduled flight. Please confirm with your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking your jet.

When should I hire a Boeing Business Jet?

Boeing Business Jets (BBJs) have unique amenities that extend far beyond sheer size and are often equipped with 1-2 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms (one more of those bathrooms may even offer stand-up showers.) These airliner-based executive aircraft also feature tall or ‘stand-up’ cabins that are also longer and wider than more typical corporate aircraft.

How soon can I have a private jet ready from the time I call in the request?

Generally speaking, with as little as 4 hours of notice. However, we have had wheels up in as little as 32 minutes from the time our client called us to book the flight and had them in the air. It depends on a few factors, such as how long it takes for the pilots to arrive at the airport (generally, there is a 2-hour call-out time for the pilots), and whether the aircraft is ready to go at the airport with no repositioning needed. Our Jet Card members enjoy faster booking since they have funds on account and can confirm a flight with a simple email.

Can I access my luggage while in flight?

On most private jets, you will be able to access your luggage during the flight. That’s because luggage and passengers are situated on the same level. This is in contrast to commercial airlines, where checked luggage is stored in a cargo hold. On large private jets, luggage is often stored in a compartment behind the lavatory, which means easy access to your bags.

When are private jet charter landing and takeoff slots applicable?

A landing or takeoff slot is simply a small window of time in which your aircraft is scheduled to fly in or out of the airport. You will need a landing and takeoff slot if you fly to a high-density airport in the United States or one that is hosting a special event with a significant number of aircraft arriving and departing. If you’re flying internationally, you will need a landing and takeoff slot for all major European cities. Please check with your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking for a specific route.

What kind of in-flight catering is available on a private jet?

Other than the standard snacks and drinks, you can order local cuisine options for your catering on board. In short, anything that doesn’t need to be cooked can be ordered; hot food must be precooked and then warmed on board.

Can I bring pets with me on private jet flights?

Of course! Just let us know in advance. The majority of the operators and aircraft owners allow pets onboard. In some cases, a small cleaning fee may apply. That said, there are specific requirements that must be met when traveling with your pet, including making sure that all documentation and vaccination records for your pet(s) are correct and up-to-date. Dogs and cats must also be at least eight weeks old and weaned when traveling within the U.S.

Airport runways are defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as designated areas of land from which an aircraft can take off and land. Generally speaking, runways resemble a wide road and can be made using either asphalt, concrete, or a mixture of both. Some aerodromes and smaller airports use natural surfaces like dirt, grass, gravel, sand, salt, and, in the case of Antarctica, ice.
