One Problem

Palo alto, california, december 24, 1999.

PIERCE DUBOIS bunched his beefy fists, attempting to mask his irritation. He was unaccustomed to discourtesy. Certainly not from people whose paychecks depended on his support. Certainly not after being summoned a thousand miles on Christmas Eve.

What couldn’t wait a few weeks until the quarterly meeting? Did the offending executives somehow sense what their angel investor had planned? Had they divined that he wanted to call it quits after seven disappointing years, to enter the new millennium free from past mistakes—and quarterly million-dollar payments? Could this power play be the CEO’s last grasp at dignity, at going out on her terms?

Pierce hoped he had it wrong. That they’d found another investor. Someone who’d keep the research progressing toward a possible payout. But as he sat there waiting for the tardy executives to arrive, he wasn’t holding his breath.

He shifted his gaze from the three empty chairs to the five faces that had gathered around the Silicon Valley conference room table. A table which, like everything else in the adjacent offices and laboratory, Pierce had paid for. Three bright-eyed scientists, an administrative assistant, and the CFO all sat quietly, studying papers and avoiding their investor’s eye.

Despite their cloaked responses and coy behavior, Pierce sensed suppressed energy in the room. Something was up and dammit they knew what it was. But they weren’t sharing. Irritated by the petty game, he picked up his phone and called his driver—who was also his pilot. Pierce hadn’t become wealthy by wasting money. “We may be heading home momentarily. Be sure the plane’s ready.”

“Yes, sir.”

Yes, sir. Now that was a proper response. We don’t know where they are, but surely they’ll be here shortly, sounded infinitely less satisfying.

Punching off his phone, Pierce decided that he had never really cared for any of the Eos team. Their science, yes. He loved that. Their work ethic, fine. Seven of the eight were married to the job and only the job, so they put in the hours. But the lot of them were more sheep than wolf. Sure, Lisa Perera, the CEO, could show some tooth. And Felix Gentry, the CFO, occasionally displayed a full set of incisors. Neither, however, was a true carnivore. Neither was part of his pack.

Sounds of activity resonated from the outer office as Pierce picked at a pesky splinter in his left forefinger. A remnant of his last wood chopping workout. The commotion had to be coming from the missing execs. Eos Pharmaceuticals only had eight employees.

All heads turned toward the door as Lisa Perera and David Hume entered the conference room. She wore the confident countenance of the consummate CEO, but appeared more shaken than defiant. The Chief Scientific Officer was much less guarded. He wore a dazed stare and strode without his usual spring.

Neither apologized for being late.

Lisa sat at the end of the table opposite Pierce. David settled into one of the two empty chairs to her left. She took a deep breath and said, “We’ve just come from Kirsten Besanko’s house.”

All eyes turned toward the sole empty seat while Lisa continued. “She passed away this morning. Her husband found her in the pool when she didn’t come in for breakfast after her morning swim.”

Gasps erupted around the table.

Allison began sobbing without abandon.

Lisa answered the obvious question. “The paramedics aren’t sure what happened. Probably a stroke or heart attack.”

“She was only thirty-three,” Ries said.

“She was six-months pregnant,” Allison sobbed, adding, “she didn’t want anyone to know.”

Pierce saw shock register on a few faces—but not all. To him, the information was anything but surprising. It implied the answer. Pregnancy significantly increased the odds of having a stroke. He didn’t mention the connection. He hadn’t flown all the way from northern Montana to talk about Kirsten. Best to move things along. “Why don’t we knock out this meeting so you can move on to personal matters? Lisa, you said we had something supremely important to discuss.”

The CEO struggled to pull herself together, taking a deep breath while momentarily closing her eyes. It was the first time Pierce had seen her anything but perky and polished.

With a photogenic face and an all-American fencer’s quick wits, Lisa Perera was more handsome than pretty. She had shoulder-length brown hair complemented by bright brown eyes and a smile that effectively camouflaged a computer-like brain. Pierce expected her to end up hosting a talk show—once her biotech career bombed.

“Yes, of course,” Lisa said, snapping herself back into form with a transformation that was both audible and visible. “Thank you for interrupting your holiday to join us on such short notice.”

Pierce decided to set the tone then and there. “You didn’t give me much choice on the phone. Or much information.” “As I said, some messages really must be delivered in person. On that note, I’m going to pass the baton to David. He’s earned the honor.”

David Hume, MD, PhD, and CSO, was the reason Pierce had funded Eos Pharmaceuticals. When he invested, Pierce bet on people. Despite delivering disappointing results for seven consecutive years, the Chief Scientific Officer still struck Pierce as the smartest man he’d ever met.

Unfortunately, intelligence wasn’t everything.

David stepped up to the proverbial plate by lifting his head. As he prepared to speak, the fire reignited in his eyes. “It took forty-two more iterations than I would have liked, and nearly twice as many as I predicted when we first took your money, but forty-three proved to be the lucky number.”

Pierce felt his heart palpitate. Did David just say lucky? “You succeeded?”

"We did,” David confirmed, his exuberant expression blasting away all doubt. “Our latest compound keeps telomeres completely intact through thousands of cellular reproductive cycles. There’s zero degradation.”

Telomeres were like metal tips on the ends of DNA zippers. They kept the long strands from getting fouled up during the unzipping and re-zipping process at the core of cellular reproduction. When telomeres malfunctioned, people got cancer. When they wore down, people aged. By keeping telomeres in pristine condition, Eos—the name of both their product and their company—would act like the elixir of immortality.

At least in theory.

Pierce couldn’t believe his ears, even though he had been fantasizing about this moment for seven years. “What are you telling me?”

David’s enthusiastic gaze didn’t waver. “Without extensive, long-term clinical trials, I can’t be definitive. But at this point, and by all indications, we believe we can arrest human aging with two shots of Eos a year.”

“What!”

“People won’t age a day after their first injection.”

Pierce found himself speechless, but quickly recovered. This was definitely too good to be true. “How confident are you in your findings?”

“Confident enough to start using it.” David gestured around the table. “All of us have.”

Pierce felt like they’d just attached jumper cables to his dreams. If David and the others believed in the safety and efficacy of Eos enough to use it on themselves, then they weren’t puffing him up as part of a pitch. When it came to science and safety, these were serious people. The leaders in their field. “I was only hoping for a slow-down. The ability to buy a few more years. Maybe a decade. You’re telling me you invented immortality?”

David raised a palm, but the other research scientists’ micro-expressions may as well have been nods. Ries, Eric and even Allison grew glows of pure pride. “No, far from it. People who take Eos can still die from any number of causes.”

“Just not old age,” Pierce confirmed.

“That’s what all our evidence indicates.”

Pierce found himself propelled to his feet by an irrepressible burst of energy. “Well, Merry Christmas! We’re about to become the richest people on the planet.”

His mind plowed forward as he paced. “If what you say is true, Eos is worth more than all the oil in Saudi Arabia. There’s nothing people won’t pay, and there’s nobody who won’t pay it. The big pharmaceutical companies will go nuts at auction. We’ll get hundreds of billions for the rights.” Pierce ran rough calculations as his lips and legs expelled excess energy. Expected purchase price. Anticipated royalty stream. His percentage ownership. He’d just become the wealthiest man alive—even if nobody knew it.

David raised his other palm, halting Pierce’s pacing. “There is one problem. We can’t sell it.”

“Absolutely fabulous!” “I didn't sleep for 3 days.” “Thoroughly Entertaining.”

THE PRICE OF TIME

The real story of interest.

by Edward Chancellor ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 16, 2022

An authoritative examination of the secret machinery of capitalism and how, for better or worse, it affects us all.

A wide-ranging global history of finance focused on interest.

“By the early twenty-first century,” writes financial journalist Chancellor, “interest had been charged on loans for around five thousand years, possibly longer. Interest had survived biblical injunctions, Aristotelian outrage, and the onslaught of medieval canonists and modern socialists.” As the author shows, interest is the oil in the wheels of capitalism, but it can just as easily became the wrench in the works. Many leftist commentators see it as the means by which the rich get richer, extracting wealth from others while doing nothing. Chancellor points out that lenders are taking on risk and sacrificing the option of spending the money directly, so they should get something for it. Borrowers, for their part, hope to use the funds to improve their own position, even after paying the interest. The rise of banks and professional lenders revolutionized societies, accelerating wealth creation and moving power away from landed aristocrats. It was chaotic, and governments tried to bring order with central banks, which set official rates. The assumption was that rates could be raised to dampen an overheated, inflationary economy and lowered when stimulus was needed. The nadir of this strategy was rates of zero or near zero after the Great Recession, from 2007 to 2009. Of course, for every winner, there is a loser, and Chancellor presents data showing that ultra-low rates often do little to lift a sagging economy. In fact, low interest rates often lead to property speculation, poor corporate governance, and frightening levels of risk-taking. In explaining all this, the author looks at some of the great financial debacles, a host of theories about interest, and rate policy in China. In the end, he does not present answers for finding a “natural” rate—because there aren’t any. Nevertheless, the book is a comprehensive, entertaining read on an ever relevant topic.

THINKING, FAST AND SLOW

THINKING, FAST AND SLOW

by Daniel Kahneman ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 1, 2011

Striking research showing the immense complexity of ordinary thought and revealing the identities of the gatekeepers in our...

A psychologist and Nobel Prize winner summarizes and synthesizes the recent decades of research on intuition and systematic thinking.

The author of several scholarly texts, Kahneman (Emeritus Psychology and Public Affairs/Princeton Univ.) now offers general readers not just the findings of psychological research but also a better understanding of how research questions arise and how scholars systematically frame and answer them. He begins with the distinction between System 1 and System 2 mental operations, the former referring to quick, automatic thought, the latter to more effortful, overt thinking. We rely heavily, writes, on System 1, resorting to the higher-energy System 2 only when we need or want to. Kahneman continually refers to System 2 as “lazy”: We don’t want to think rigorously about something. The author then explores the nuances of our two-system minds, showing how they perform in various situations. Psychological experiments have repeatedly revealed that our intuitions are generally wrong, that our assessments are based on biases and that our System 1 hates doubt and despises ambiguity. Kahneman largely avoids jargon; when he does use some (“heuristics,” for example), he argues that such terms really ought to join our everyday vocabulary. He reviews many fundamental concepts in psychology and statistics (regression to the mean, the narrative fallacy, the optimistic bias), showing how they relate to his overall concerns about how we think and why we make the decisions that we do. Some of the later chapters (dealing with risk-taking and statistics and probabilities) are denser than others (some readers may resent such demands on System 2!), but the passages that deal with the economic and political implications of the research are gripping.

THE CULTURE MAP

THE CULTURE MAP

Breaking through the invisible boundaries of global business.

by Erin Meyer ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 27, 2014

These are not hard and fast rules, but Meyer delivers important reading for those engaged in international business.

A helpful guide to working effectively with people from other cultures.

“The sad truth is that the vast majority of managers who conduct business internationally have little understanding about how culture is impacting their work,” writes Meyer, a professor at INSEAD, an international business school. Yet they face a wider array of work styles than ever before in dealing with clients, suppliers and colleagues from around the world. When is it best to speak or stay quiet? What is the role of the leader in the room? When working with foreign business people, failing to take cultural differences into account can lead to frustration, misunderstanding or worse. Based on research and her experiences teaching cross-cultural behaviors to executive students, the author examines a handful of key areas. Among others, they include communicating (Anglo-Saxons are explicit; Asians communicate implicitly, requiring listeners to read between the lines), developing a sense of trust (Brazilians do it over long lunches), and decision-making (Germans rely on consensus, Americans on one decider). In each area, the author provides a “culture map scale” that positions behaviors in more than 20 countries along a continuum, allowing readers to anticipate the preferences of individuals from a particular country: Do they like direct or indirect negative feedback? Are they rigid or flexible regarding deadlines? Do they favor verbal or written commitments? And so on. Meyer discusses managers who have faced perplexing situations, such as knowledgeable team members who fail to speak up in meetings or Indians who offer a puzzling half-shake, half-nod of the head. Cultural differences—not personality quirks—are the motivating factors behind many behavioral styles. Depending on our cultures, we understand the world in a particular way, find certain arguments persuasive or lacking merit, and consider some ways of making decisions or measuring time natural and others quite strange.

Price-to-Book (PB) Ratio: Meaning, Formula, and Example

time book price

What Is the Price-to-Book (P/B) Ratio?

Many investors use the price-to-book ratio (P/B ratio) to compare a firm's market capitalization to its book value and locate undervalued companies. This ratio is calculated by dividing the company's current stock price per share by its book value per share (BVPS).

Key Takeaways

  • The price-to-book (P/B) ratio measures the market's valuation of a company relative to its book value.
  • The market value of equity is typically higher than the book value of a company's stock.
  • The price-to-book ratio is used by value investors to identify potential investments.
  • P/B ratios under 1.0 are typically considered solid investments by value investors.
  • A good P/B ratio is relative to a business and its industry.

Investopedia / Theresa Chiechi

Formula and Calculation of the Price-to-Book (P/B) Ratio

The formula for the price-to-book ratio is:

P / B   R a t i o = M a r k e t   P r i c e   p e r   S h a r e B o o k   V a l u e   p e r   S h a r e P/B ~Ratio = \dfrac{Market~Price~per~Share}{Book~Value~per~Share} P / B   R a t i o = B oo k   Va l u e   p er   S ha re M a r k e t   P r i ce   p er   S ha re

  • Market Price per Share = Current market price of the share
  • Book Value per Share = (Total assets - intangible assets - total liabilities) ÷ number of outstanding shares

Market value per share is obtained by looking at the information available on most stock tracking websites. You need to find the company's balance sheet to obtain total assets, total liabilities, and outstanding shares. Most investment websites display this financial report under a "financials" tab—some show it on a stock's summary tab.

What the Price-to-Book Ratio Can Tell You

The P/B ratio reflects the value that market participants attach to a company's equity relative to the book value of its equity. Many investors use the P/B ratio to find undervalued stocks. By purchasing an undervalued stock , they hope to be rewarded when the market realizes the stock is undervalued and returns its price to where it should be—according to the investor's analysis.

Some investors believe that the P/B ratio is a forward-looking metric that reflects a company's future cash flows; however, when you look at the information used to calculate the P/B ratio, the factors used are the price investors are willing to pay currently, the number of shares issued by a company, and values from a balance sheet that reflect data from the past. Thus, the ratio isn't forward-looking and doesn't predict or indicate future cash flows.

The P/B ratio also provides a valuable reality check for investors seeking  growth at a reasonable price . It is often evaluated with  return on equity (ROE), a reliable growth indicator. Large discrepancies between the P/B ratio and ROE often raise a red flag for investors.

Overvalued growth stocks frequently show a combination of low ROE and high P/B ratios. Properly valued stocks have ROE and P/B ratios that grow somewhat similarly because stocks that generate higher returns tend to attract investors and increase demand, thus increasing the stock's market price.

A high P/B ratio suggests a stock could be overvalued, while a lower P/B ratio could mean the stock is  undervalued .

As with most ratios, the P/B ratio varies by industry. A company should be compared with similarly structured companies in similar industries; otherwise, the comparison results could be misleading.

P/B Ratios and Public Companies

It is difficult to pinpoint a specific numeric value of a "good" price-to-book (P/B) ratio when determining if a stock is undervalued and therefore, a good investment. It's helpful to identify some general parameters or a range for P/B value, then consider various other factors and  valuation  measures that more accurately interpret the P/B value and forecast a company's potential for growth.

The P/B ratio has been favored by  value investors  for decades and is widely used by market  analysts . Traditionally, any value under 1.0 is considered desirable for value investors, indicating an undervalued stock may have been identified. However, some value investors may often consider stocks with a less stringent P/B value of less than 3.0 as their benchmark.

Equity Market Value vs. Book Value

Due to accounting procedures, the market value of equity is typically higher than a security's book value, resulting in a P/B ratio above 1.0. During times of low earnings, a company's P/B ratio can dive below a value of 1.0.

For example, in most cases, companies must expense  research and development  costs, reducing book value because this includes the expenses on the balance sheet. However, these R&D outlays can create unique production processes for a company or result in new patents that can bring royalty revenues. While accounting principles favor a conservative approach in capitalizing costs, market participants may raise the stock price because of such R&D efforts, resulting in wide differences between the market and book values of equity.

Example of How to Use the P/B Ratio

Assume that a company has $100 million in assets on the balance sheet, no intangibles, and $75 million in liabilities. Therefore, the book value of that company would be calculated as $25 million ($100M - $75M).

If there are 10 million  shares outstanding , each share would represent $2.50 of book value. Therefore, if the share price is $5, the P/B ratio would be 2.0 (5 / 2.50).

This illustrates that the market price is valued at twice its book value, which may or may not indicate overvaluation. This would depend on how P/B ratios compare against other similarly sized companies in the same sector.

Price-to-book ratio may not be as useful when valuating the stock of a company with fewer tangible assets on their balance sheets, such as services firms and software development companies.

Price-to-Book Ratio vs. Price-to-Tangible-Book Ratio

Closely related to the P/B ratio is the price-to-tangible-book value ratio (PTVB). The latter is a valuation ratio expressing the price of a security compared to its hard (or tangible) book value as reported in the company's balance sheet. The tangible book value number is equal to the company's total book value less than the value of any intangible assets.

Intangible assets can be items such as patents, intellectual property, and goodwill. This may be a more useful valuation measure when valuing something like a patent in different ways or if it is difficult to put a value on such an intangible asset in the first place.

Limitations of Using the P/B Ratio

Investors find the P/B ratio useful because the book value of equity provides a relatively stable and intuitive metric they can easily compare to the market price. The P/B ratio can also be used for firms with positive book values and negative earnings since negative earnings render price-to-earnings ratios useless. There are fewer companies with negative book values than companies with negative earnings.

However, when accounting standards applied by firms vary, P/B ratios may not be comparable, especially for companies from different countries. Additionally, P/B ratios can be less useful for service and information technology companies with little tangible assets on their balance sheets . Finally, the book value can become negative because of a long series of negative earnings, making the P/B ratio useless for relative valuation .

Other potential problems in using the P/B ratio stem from the fact that any number of scenarios, such as recent acquisitions, recent write-offs, or share  buybacks can distort the book value figure in the equation. When searching for undervalued stocks, investors should consider multiple valuation measures to complement the P/B ratio.

What Does the Price-to-Book Ratio Compare?

The price-to-book ratio is one of the most widely used financial ratios. It compares a share's market price to its book value, essentially showing the value given by the market for each dollar of the company’s net worth. High-growth companies often show price-to-book ratios well above 1.0, whereas companies facing financial distress occasionally show ratios below 1.0. Another valuable tool is the price-to-sales ratio , which shows the company's revenue generated from equity investments.

Why Is the Price-to-Book Ratio Important?

The price-to-book ratio is important because it can help investors understand whether a company's market price seems reasonable compared to its balance sheet. For example, if a company shows a high price-to-book ratio, investors might check to see whether that valuation is justified given other measures, such as its historical return on assets or growth in earnings per share (EPS).

What Is a Good Price-to-Book Ratio?

What counts as a “good” price-to-book ratio will depend on the industry in question and the overall state of valuations in the market. An investor assessing the price-to-book ratio of a stock might choose to accept a higher average price-to-book ratio, as compared to an investor looking at a the stock of a company in an industry where lower price-to-book ratios are the norm.

The price-to-book (P/B) ratio considers how a stock is priced relative to the book value of its assets. If the P/B is under 1.0, then the market is thought to be underpricing the stock since the accounting value of its assets, if sold, would be greater than the market price of the shares. Therefore, value investors typically look for companies that have low price-to-book ratios, among other metrics. A high P/B ratio can also help investors identify and avoid  overvalued  companies.

The Price of Time by Edward Chancellor

The Price of Time

The Price of Time offers a history of interest back to the Babylonians as well as of the debate over the legitimacy of demanding it at all. —  Read the complete FT review

All economic and financial activities take place across time. Interest coordinates these activities. The story of capitalism is thus the story of interest: the price that individuals, companies and nations pay to borrow money.

In The Price of Time , Edward Chancellor traces the history of interest from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia, through debates about usury in Restoration Britain and John Law ’ s ill-fated Mississippi scheme, to the global credit booms of the twenty-first century. We generally assume that high interest rates are harmful, but Chancellor argues that, whenever money is too easy, financial markets become unstable. He takes the story to the present day, when interest rates have sunk lower than at any time in the five millennia since they were first recorded - including the extraordinary appearance of negative rates in Europe and Japan - and highlights how this has contributed to profound economic insecurity and financial fragility.

Chancellor reveals how extremely low interest rates not only create asset price inflation but are also largely responsible for weak economic growth, rising inequality, zombie companies, elevated debt levels and the pensions crises that have afflicted the West in recent years - conditions under which economies cannot possibly thrive. At the same time, easy money in China has inflated an epic real estate bubble, accompanied by the greatest credit and investment boom in history. As the global financial system edges closer to yet another crisis, Chancellor shows that only by understanding interest can we hope to face the challenges ahead.

In the beginning was the loan, and the loan carried interest. For at least five millennia people have been borrowing and lending at interest. Yet as capitalism became established from the late Middle Ages onwards, denunciations of interest were tempered because interest was a necessary reward for lenders to part with their capital. And interest performs many other vital functions: it encourages people to save; enables them to place a value on precious assets, such as houses and all manner of financial securities; and allows us to price risk.

Alan Gregory is a clinical psychologist with a thriving practice in Boulder, Colorado. His life begins to unravel when one of his female patients is found in an apparent suicide and the local paper begins printing accusations from an unnamed source of sexual impropriety between the woman and Dr. Gregory. He launches a psychological and personal quest for the truth that rapidly intensifies when more of his patients die untimely deaths, and Gregory suspects not only that the deaths are related but that another one of his patients may be somehow involved. Lacking facts but roused by suspicion and troubled by seemingly random acts of terror around him, Gregory starts to fear for the safety of the people he loves. The question of the inviolability of confidential disclosures made to Gregory by his patients - privileged information - becomes crucial as the psychologist pursues an unsettling romance with Lauren Crowder, a lovely deputy district attorney investigating one of the deaths. Bound to silence, Gregory follows the psychological tracks of someone he fears may be a cunning and disturbed killer, while turning to his enigmatic but supportive partner, Diane Estevez, for counsel, and to his tart-tongued female urologist neighbor for support. The sinister, surprising drama unfolds against Boulder's Rocky Mountain backdrop, in the arresting natural beauty of Aspen, and in the midst of a baroque Halloween costume party in downtown Boulder. Finally, in a lonely mountain lodge enshrouded in menace, the story comes to its breathtaking climax.

Thrilling and Thought Provoking

The description say Agatha Christie meets Michael Crichton and that's surprisingly accurate. There are two interwoven storylines taking place, an Agatha Christie And Then There Were None style mystery mixed with a Crichtonesque thriller--solid cutting-edge medical science skillfully mixed with high-tension thrills. Beginning with the author's brief note, this story has me rethinking the topic of immortality, or "halted aging" as one character called it. I like the way it stimulated my brain as well as my emotions. Few books accomplish that, entertaining while leaving you feeling like you've grown. The narrator, who I recognize from the Dan Brown Da Vinci Code books, was a good choice for this specific genre mix. His silky voice worked well with all the mystery and intrigue and tantalizing revelation. There are a lot of characters in this one, as necessitated by the mystery part of the plot. They're well rendered and you like both good and bad. The thriller characters are more typical Tigner, with compelling male and female leads and an antagonist you appreciate but love to hate. My favorite part was the way the author brought the whole story full circle at the very end. A masterful finishing touch. All in all, another excellent read from one of my very favorite authors.

Nothing of substance

This book unfortunately falls short of its main idea's potential. The story's characters lack any development, and their physical and romantic fate isn't enough to excite me about listening. It's as if the author thought it would be good enough to just throw the CIA, ostentatious luxury, and murder in a pot. The murder mystery isn't compelling because there are too few real suspects, and it's completely disconnected from the main protagonist. The two separate story lines don't connect in a satisfying manner. I never felt like I knew the characters or cared about them. At one moment, I thought the book was giving me a terrific twist, only to realize that I read too much into it, and that there was no twist at all. I think the idea is great, but this treatment of it doesn't say anything meaningful through its forgettable characters. If you're looking for a truly exciting adventure, this is no Casino Royale...

Note to self...

Note to self, never buy another book that is suggested in an Audible email. Reading a book with several characters and no character development is like reading a book with no paragraphs. You just get lost in a soup of words. By the time the fourth character died (or was it the third), it became clear I had no idea who was dead and who was alive. Neither did I care. You can't like every book but I am disappointed that Audible would promote something so poorly written.

This book was terrible. To say it has any hint of Agatha Christie is ridiculous. It is about a horrible group of people, doing horrible things. It reads like a superficial piece cranked out quickly to make money. Don't waste yours!

Interesting concept with some flaws

In The Price of Time, a small group of researchers plus their wealthy sponsor come upon a formula that will maintain their telomere length, thus affording them immortality. They then have to decide what to do with this discovery. Sharing it with the world would unleash global chaos, so they decide to keep it for themselves. The problem, of course, is one any vampire could relate to -- how not to attract attention over the years as everyone around them ages and they don't. Great concept, but then it goes off the rails a bit because instead of getting new identities every twenty years or so, they come up with a complicated plot that requires the hiring of a professional assassin to find a doppelganger for each of them, kill that person, and then assume that person's identity. In other words, these people decide not only to hoard immortality to themselves, but to become mass murderers as well, or at least be responsible for mass murder. To avoid spoilers, I'll just say that one of the dopplegangers fights back. The performance was pretty good - a couple of characters sound like old actors from the 1950s, but overall, I'd give this book a C+.

DIFFERENT IN A GOOD WAY!

Many dilemmas (moral, etc.) are posited given the premise of the story. A "what if..." and many of the ramifications that come with it. How far is one willing to go to maintain the status quo. It took me a while to get acquainted with all the characters involved, but once I did and could remember who was who in the story, it was easy to follow. I was rooting for the underdogs all the way! Paul Michael did a great job narrating, so it was an easy and enjoyable listen. I liked the story, and I recommend it.

Started great but ….

I honestly thought this was about time travel and corporate skullduggery, it was neither. Stories about eternal youth usually have a 'catch' to them so I avoid such stories, but I liked the narrator and Zachary Chase so I continued. If it were not for those two factors I would have skipped this all together.

Amazing Narration!

After starting and stopping two books from Kindle Unlimited that totally bombed, I gave this one a try and loved it! Great action, intriguing and original plot, with some steamy romantic scenes weaved in. This was a change of pace from my normal reads but it is so well done. It kept me guessing throughout. I love how the author developed the characters and he did a great job of balancing their personalities. The “good guys” had some relatable darkness woven in and the “bad guys” were also easy to understand. You could see where everyone was coming from and relate. Great book. Highly recommend. Also, the Audible narrator was amazing. Great voice and narration. I could listen to the guy talk all day.

The Price of Time: The Real Story of Interest

A comprehensive and profoundly relevant history of interest from one of the world’s leading financial writers,  The Price of Time  explains our current global financial position and how we got here

In the beginning was the loan, and the loan carried interest. For at least five millennia people have been borrowing and lending at interest. The practice wasn’t always popular—in the ancient world, usury was generally viewed as exploitative, a potential path to debt bondage and slavery.

All economic and financial activities take place across time. Interest is often described as the “price of money,” but it is better called the “price of time:” time is scarce, time has value, interest is the time value of money.

Over the first two decades of the twenty-first century, interest rates have sunk lower than ever before. Easy money after the global financial crisis in 2007/2008 has produced several ill effects, including the appearance of multiple asset price bubbles, a reduction in productivity growth, discouraging savings and exacerbating inequality, and forcing yield starved investors to take on excessive risk. The financial world now finds itself caught between a rock and a hard place, and Edward Chancellor is here to tell us why. In this enriching volume, Chancellor explores the history of interest and its essential function in determining how capital is allocated and priced.

About the author

International Bestselling Author Tim Tigner began his career in Soviet Counterintelligence with the US Army Special Forces, the Green Berets. That was back in the Cold War days when, "We learned Russian so you didn't have to," something he did at the Presidio of Monterey alongside Recon Marines and Navy SEALs.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, Tim switched from espionage to arbitrage. Armed with a Wharton MBA rather than a Colt M16, he moved to Moscow in the midst of Perestroika. There, he led prominent multinational medical companies, worked with cosmonauts on the MIR Space Station (from Earth, alas), chaired the Association of International Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, and helped write Russia's first law on healthcare.

Moving to Brussels during the formation of the EU, Tim ran Europe, Middle East, and Africa for a Johnson & Johnson company and traveled like a character in a Robert Ludlum novel. He eventually landed in Silicon Valley, where he launched new medical technologies as a startup CEO.

In his free time, Tim has climbed the peaks of Mount Olympus, hang glided from the cliffs of Rio de Janeiro, and ballooned over Belgium. He earned scuba certification in Turkey, learned to ski in Slovenia, and ran the Serengeti with a Maasai warrior. He acted on stage in Portugal, taught negotiations in Germany, and chaired a healthcare conference in Holland. Tim studied psychology in France, radiology in England, and philosophy in Greece. He has enjoyed ballet at the Bolshoi, the opera on Lake Como, and the symphony in Vienna. He's been a marathoner, paratrooper, triathlete, and yogi.

Intent on combining his creativity with his experience, Tim began writing thrillers in 1996 from an apartment overlooking Moscow's Gorky Park. Twenty years later, his passion for creative writing continues to grow every day. His home office now overlooks a vineyard in Northern California.

Tim grew up in the Midwest, and graduated from Hanover College in 1990 with a BA in Philosophy and Mathematics. After military service and work as a financial analyst and foreign-exchange trader, he earned an MBA in Finance and an MA in International Studies from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton and Lauder schools on a full-ride scholarship.

Thank you for taking the time to read about the author. Tim is most grateful for his loyal fans, and loves to correspond with readers like you. You are welcome to reach him through his website timtigner.com.

The first book of the next crisis. All economic and financial activities take place across time. Interest coordinates these activities. The story of capitalism is thus the story of interest: the price that individuals, companies and nations pay to borrow money. In The Price of Time , Edward Chancellor traces the history of interest from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia, through debates about usury in Restoration Britain and John Law ' s ill-fated Mississippi scheme, to the global credit booms of the twenty-first century.

Product description

Is it possible to write a highly engaging history of the world going back to Hammurabi, unfolding along the way a bitingly comprehensive explanation for its problems today, all told through a single character? Apparently yes. Edward Chancellor has done it, an achievement all the more notable since his drama is built around a character so unheroic on its surface: his "price of time" is interest rates. This is a timely, vitally important and hugely readable book.

Stay-at-home mom faces jail time for overdue library books

BEDIAS, Texas (KPRC) - A Texas mother got an unpleasant surprise while trying to renew her driver’s license. She learned there was a warrant out for her arrest because of overdue library books.

Kaylee Morgan, a wife and stay-at-home mother of five, checked out a few books in March 2023 from the Navasota Public Library in Grimes County. They were for her children, who are homeschooled.

About two weeks ago, she went to get her driver’s license renewed on her 30th birthday, and she was told there was a warrant out for her arrest.

“This was news to me. I haven’t been pulled over. I’ve never been in any sort of legal trouble,” Morgan said.

She called the courts and found out the warrant was related to a charge for theft of government property, a Class C misdemeanor. She also faces a $570 fine, which she said her family could not afford on their single income.

“It’s over a library book that I turned in late,” Morgan said.

During that time, she was dealing with pregnancy complications and forgot to return the books on the due date. Her husband returned all but one book two months later. That one book didn’t fit inside the library’s drop box.

“I explained all this to the judge. My husband was working in Houston, and we were in Bedias. It was about a 30-minute hike to the library… and the book didn’t fit in the return box,” Morgan said.

She says the judge told her she did not want to hear her “excuses” and said she needed to “take responsibility.”

According to a Navasota city ordinance, refusal or failure to return books or items within 30 days from the due date will result in the person’s library card being revoked. It goes on to say any person who damages or destroys books could face a fine of up to $500.

Morgan says the ordinance is excessive, and she’s thinking about starting a petition to change it.

“There are so many other things we could do as a consequence. I do agree having a time frame for library books is important… But maybe community service, like you returned a book late, so come read to the kiddos,” she said.

The family was able to raise the money to pay the fine and will donate any leftover amount to the Smithville Public Library.

Morgan’s case over the warrant and related theft charge is pending and under investigation. She says she wants to fight it but does not have the additional funds.

She adds this has put a strain on her breastfeeding, as she is forcing herself to use a breast pump in case she goes to jail over the library books.

Book of Meme Pumps Another 12% – Can It Hit $0.1 in 2024?

B ook of Meme has been one of the breakout stars of the current bull run, climbing quickly into the ranks of the top ten meme coins. This has led to investors and experts alike speculating on how far this upward trajectory can reach.

The meme-immortalizing project has seen its price surge almost 2000% this month, and with a new 24-hour jump of 12%, the next question is, can Book of Meme continue its explosive rise and hit $0.1 in 2024?

Book of Meme quickly rising back to its all time high?

Many investors have been lauding Q1 of 2024 as meme season, and nowhere has this been clearer than with the rise of Book of Meme ($BOME).

The project combines internet culture with blockchain technology, minting memes as NFTs and acting as a decentralized meme archive. Its creator — @Darkfarms1 on X — already has 141k followers on the platform and has created previous NFT collections such as Smowl and Derage.

Book of Meme had a meteoric launch that saw prices rise from $0.000858 to $0.02805 in just two days, with a market cap of $1 billion.

$BOME experienced a price correction over the next three days, dropping as low as $0.09159 on the 19th of March. Gradually, the price settled around 0.016. This wasn’t to last long, though.

In the past two days, $BOME has broken past its key resistance level of $0.018, leading to speculation that the token is about to moon again. The price of $BOME is currently at $0.01842.

Will it hit $0.1, though? It’s difficult to tell, with meme coins being quick to rise but also quick to fall.

However, Book of Meme has already gathered a huge community and has an NFT collection about to drop. The project capitalizes on the strong meme culture in crypto and the new rise of Solana meme coins.

If this new spike continues, we could see a new all-time high for Book of Meme in a matter of days.

Is Slothana the next big Solana meme coin?

Solana has been central to the current meme coin craze with the trading volume up 30% recently. Many analysts have been searching the network to find the next Bonk or Book of Meme. With animal-themed memes seeing a huge pump, we think one of the most exciting new presales is Slothana .

Slothana is the newest sloth meme coin, following in the footsteps of the meteoric Slerf coin.

Slerf made the headlines after the developer burned $10m worth of LP tokens allocated to presale investors. The crypto meme community quickly rallied around to make investors whole again, causing the price to jump from its initial listing of $0.02193 to $1.3710.

However, the price has now dropped to $0.5011, leading many to look for the next Sloth meme coin on the scene. Some popular crypto traders have their eye on Slothana ($SLOTH), a new Solana memecoin in presale.

Slothana aims to ride this momentum with a fresh twist on presales that aims to make it equitable and fair for all. Investors can send $SOL to the Slothana presale address, and at the end of the presale, they’ll be airdropped $SLOTH at a rate of 1 $SOL for 10,000 $SLOTH.

The presale has already proven hugely popular, with almost $7 million raised. The presale can end at any moment, which has created a feeling of scarcity and driven hype for the project.

If Slothana can harness the current meme coin craze and ride its current momentum through to its launch, we could see astronomical prices for the token.

Morgan Wallen controversy

While Wallen is a bona fide star, his ascent to the top hasn’t come without a few hiccups.

In fact, his Wikipedia has a whole section labeled  “Controversies.”

Just a few of his most notable scandals include an arrest for public intoxication and disorderly conduct (May 2020), partying maskless in a bar at the height of the pandemic (October 2020) and using racial slurs on camera (February 2021).

Following his racist incident, Wallen donated $300,000 to the Black Music Action Coalition. He was also banned from a number of award shows.

Perhaps the book's most serious omission is its neglect of the absence of a US central bank between 1837 and 1914, a period that saw frequent, devastating financial crises. (Charles P.
