Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert
Nina Dobrev — who played Elena Gilbert, the teen orphan and student who gets caught up in all the supernatural chaos and a love triangle between two centuries-old vampire brothers — left The Vampire Diaries at the end of season 6 to pursue "adult roles." She told Harper's Bazaar in 2017, "I needed to feel that fear of, Oh, my God, what if I never get a job again?"
Since her exit from TVD playing multiple characters, including Elena, Katherine Pierce (née Petrova) and Amara, Dobrev starred in the 2017 remake of the classic 1990 film Flatliners . Her film credits also include Crash Pad (2017), Then Came You (2018), Run This Town (2019), Lucky Day (2019), Love Hard (2021) and Redeeming Love (2022). Dobrev also appeared on the CBS sitcom Fam after briefly reprising her Degrassi role as Mia Jones in Drake 's " I'm Upset" reunion music video in 2018.
Dobrev has been romantically linked to Olympic snowboarder Shaun White since 2019 and launched Fresh Vine Wine with bestie Julianne Hough in 2021.
Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore
Paul Wesley (thankfully) moved on from drinking animal blood as the moody vampire Stefan Salvatore (and a slew of other immortal beings) on The Vampire Diaries , starring on the Paramount+ thriller series Tell Me a Story during its two-season run. He has also appeared on the limited series Flowers in the Attic: The Origin and as Captain Kirk on Star Trek : Strange New Worlds .
In addition to his work on-screen, Wesley directed episodes of TVD , as well as an episode of Legacies , Shadowhunters , Batwoman and Roswell, New Mexico .
Wesley married Ines de Ramon in February 2019, but the two separated in 2022 after three years of marriage . In 2021, he and former Vampire Diaries costar Ian Somerhalder launched the craft bourbon line Brother's Bond.
Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore
With his days as the bad boy bloodthirsty Damon Salvatore behind him, Somerhalder took some time away from the screen to focus on his family life. However, the actor returned to the realm of vampires as Dr. Luther Swann on the 2019 series V-Wars , which he also executive produced.
After dating his on-screen girlfriend Dobrev in real life for several years, the pair split in 2013, and Somerhalder jumped vampire franchises in his personal life, taking up with Twilight 's Nikki Reed in 2014.
The pair tied the knot in Malibu , California, the following year and welcomed a daughter, Bodhi Soleil , in July 2017. In January 2023, Somerhalder and Reed announced they were expecting a second baby together .
Kat Graham as Bonnie Bennett
As Elena's witchy best friend, Kat Graham has continued to charm fans in various films since TVD ended, portraying Jada Pinkett Smith in the 2017 Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me and starring in Where's the Money alongside King Bach, YouTuber Logan Paul and Terry Crews .
Graham's other film credits include How It Ends (2018), The Holiday Calendar (2018), The Poison Rose (2019), Operation Christmas Drop (2020), Collide (2022) and Love in the Villa (2022).
She also voiced the character of April O'Neil on the animated reboot of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . Aside from acting, Graham has focused on her music career, releasing the albums Love Music Funk Magic (2017) and Long Hot Summer (2022).

Steven R. McQueen as Jeremy Gilbert
After his stint as Elena's vampire-hunting younger brother, Steven R. McQueen — the grandson and namesake of Hollywood legend Steve McQueen — later reprised his role as Jeremy on one episode of the spinoff series Legacies in 2018. Following costar Wesley's footsteps, he also appeared on an episode of the 2018 TV docuseries Medal of Honor and starred in the 2020 film The Warrant .
In January 2018, McQueen proposed to his girlfriend of over one year, Alexandra Silva — but by May of that year, he announced they had called their engagement off.
Candice King as Caroline Forbes
Candice King, who played Elena and Bonnie's other best friend and the sheriff's daughter, seemed to have a "stake" in her character: She reprised the role of Caroline on The Originals for a handful of episodes in 2018. She also appeared in After We Collided (2020), Christmas in Tune (2021) and Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story (2022).
She wed The Fray musician Joe King in New Orleans in 2014 after dating for two years, and the couple welcomed daughter Florence May in 2016, followed by their second, Josephine , in 2020.
Joseph Morgan as Klaus Mikaelson
The original werewolf-vampire hybrid, Klaus was the main character on the aptly named spinoff The Originals — which Joseph Morgan began filming while still appearing on The Vampire Diaries . After TVD ended in 2017, he landed a recurring role on the series Animal Kingdom and returned to the realm of sci-fi drama on the 2020 series Brave New World alongside Demi Moore .
The actor also reprised his role of Klaus on an episode of Legacies and appeared as villain Sebastian Blood on season 4 of the teen superhero series Titans in 2022.
In July 2014, Morgan wed his TVD costar , Persia White , in Jamaica.
Michael Malarkey as Lorenzo "Enzo" St. John
Michael Malarkey joined the show during season 5. His character "Enzo" was a former cellmate of Damon who developed a romantic relationship with Bonnie. Malarkey went on to land recurring roles on The Oath and the sci-fi drama Project Blue Book . His TV credits also include Big Sky , Westworld , Quantum Leap and Law & Order: Organized Crime .
In addition to acting, Malarkey released an album, Mongrels , in 2017.
He married Mayfair Witches actress Nadine Lewington in June 2009, and the pair have two children.

Matthew Davis was Mystic Falls' history teacher-slash-vampire hunter — previously famous for his turn as Elle Woods' Harvard-bound ex-boyfriend, Warner, in 2001's Legally Blonde . Davis reprised his role as Alaric on both TVD spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies. He also starred in the 2019 holiday TV movie Christmas Wishes and Mistletoe Kisses.
Davis married Kiley Casciano in December 2018, just hours after proposing to the actress. He and his wife welcomed their first daughter, Ripley Nightingale , in 2020 and their second daughter, Dorothy Lavender , in 2022.

Michael Trevino made quite the impression in the role of Tyler Lockwood, Matt's best friend and former football star turned werewolf hybrid. Since wrapping his eight-season run on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals , Trevino had a recurring role on another hit CW series Roswell, New Mexico , on which he also directed an episode in 2022. His film credits post- TVD include 2017's Baker Daily: Trump Takedown , Out of Control and Sunset Park .
In January 2021, Trevino and Dutch model Bregje Heinen went Instagram official, with the actor sharing that " it's been a year of adventures " for the couple.

Vampires, witches and werewolves, oh my! The Vampire Diaries ’ 2009 premiere introduced fans to one of the most memorable vampire-themed series to date.
The CW show, which ran for eight seasons until 2017, took place in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia , home to mythical creatures and humans alike . In addition to tales of people becoming vampires, or finding out they have powers — which was the case with Bonnie Bennett ( Kat Graham ) — the series brought to life one of the most memorable TV love triangles .
After teenager Elena Gilbert ( Nina Dobrev ) fell for vampire Stefan Salvatore ( Paul Wesley ) and later his bad boy brother, Damon Salvatore ( Ian Somerhalder ), fans were forced to decide which of the two heartthrobs they’d want to romance. Although Elena did choose one over the other by season 8, many of the show’s fanbase are divided between Team Stefan and Team Damon .
“The recipe for a love triangle is as old as the recipe for gingersnap cookies, but the ingredients, it’s something that you can’t control, which is chemistry,” creator Julie Plec told E! News after the show’s 2017 finale. “So, as a writer, you can create as much as you want, but when it all comes down to it, you need the three parts of the love triangle to work.”
Luckily, the leading trio had the right mix of chemistry as lovers, brothers and friends.

“Ian and Nina had chemistry as the bad boy and the good girl, and the hero/heroine chemistry between Paul and Nina was just so beautiful, so that worked, and you can’t force that, and you can’t write that on the page,” she added. “It just has to exist.”
Offscreen, the cast — which also included Candice Accola , Michael Trevino , Joseph Morgan and many more — formed a lifelong bond, which has remained strong partially due to a group text .
“I talk to them all of the time,” Graham exclusively told Us Weekly in December 2017. “I talk to Michael Malarkey a lot. Nina and I text a lot. So yeah, I have a good relationship with them.”
The Cut Throat City actress noted that after nearly a decade together, the former costars have each other’s backs .
“We have a lot of support for each other,” she explained. “A lot of us are entering this new chapter and it’s important that everyone really supports each other especially right now.”

Ian Somerhalder
Somerhalder went from playing vampire Damon on TVD to portraying vampire research physician Luther Swann on V-Wars , which he also produced. He then appeared on Good Mythical Morning and landed a role in Time Framed . The Louisiana native teamed up with his former onscreen brother, Wesley, to create Brother’s Bond Bourbon in 2020.
The Lost alum wed Nikki Reed in 2015 and two years later they welcomed their first child, daughter Bodhi. The duo announced in January 2023 that Reed is pregnant with baby No. 2.
Paul Wesley
The New Jersey native followed up his role as Stefan Salvatore by narrating the short film Aliens . Wesley also began playing Tucker Reed on Tell Me a Story in 2018. The actor has both producer and director credits to his name, including work on the short films Ashmina and Anna and directing episodes of Legacies and Batwoman . Nina Dobrev
Despite playing the leading role of Elena Gilbert — who famously romanced brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore — Dobrev (who also played Elena’s doppelganger Katherine Pierce) left the show in 2015, but returned for the series finale in 2017. The Bulgaria native then appeared in Flatliners , Dog Days , Run This Town and Lucky Day . She played Clem on the short-lived series Fam as well. Dobrev will make her debut as a producer with the upcoming film Sick Girl . Us confirmed in May 2013 that Dobrev and Somerhalder split after dating for three years. The Canada-raised star has been dating snowboarder Shaun White since February 2020. The Fam alum launched Fresh Vine Wine, a collection of low-calorie wines, with Julianne Hough in May 2021. Dobrev stars in Netflix’s holiday movie Love Hard , which premiered in November 2021. She founded organic alcohol brand Fresh Vine Wine in 2021 with pal Julianne Hough.
Candice Accola
Accola reprised her role as Caroline Forbes — cheerleading captain turned vampire — in TVD’s spinoff, The Originals , as a recurring character in 2018. She returned as Caroline Forbes-Salvatore in the Legacies series finale in 2022.
Accola wed The Fray’s Joe King in 2014 and they welcomed their first child in 2016. The couple’s second child arrived in December 2020. Accola filed for divorce in April 2022, citing irreconcilable differences.

Steven R. McQueen
The Los Angeles native portrayed Elena’s younger brother, Jeremy Gilbert, for six seasons. McQueen then played Jimmy Borelli on Chicago Fire — and appeared in a few episodes of Chicago P.D. — before returning to TVD for the series finale and later reprising the role on Legacies . The actor, who is the grandson of the late actor Steve McQueen, also starred in The Take Off , Home by Spring and The Warrant . Throughout his career, the actor has taken part in charity work including volunteering with Smile Train, TECHO, Thirst Project and Echoes of Hope.
Matthew Davis
Davis’ Alaric Saltzman was a history teacher and vampire hunter who became the guardian to Elena and Jeremy after their aunt Jenna Sommers ( Sara Canning ) passed away. The Utah native then appeared on The Originals and starred on TVD spinoff Legacies for four seasons. Davis was also seen in Christmas Wishes and Mistletoe Kisses . The Legally Blonde actor married Kiley Casciano in 2018 and in March 2020, the couple welcomed their first child, Ripley.
Joseph Morgan
The British actor joined the CW drama in season 2 as Original vampire (and Original Hybrid) Klaus Mikaelson. His character went on to lead the spinoff series The Originals for five seasons. Morgan also appeared in Gone Baby Gone and Animal Kingdom before landing the role of CJack60 on Brave New World . The actor directed a few episodes of The Originals during his time on the show and was a director, producer and writer on the short films Carousel and Revelation . Morgan wed actress Persia White in 2014 and was previously Positive Women’s global ambassador.
Michael Malarkey
Malarkey’s Lorenzo “Enzo” St. John first appeared during season 5 of the show. He was Damon’s former cellmate in the 1950s and fellow vampire. The British-American actor went on to play Sam Foster on The Oath and Captain Michael Quinn on Project Blue Book . He has also been in A Violent Separation and Oliver’s Landing . Malarkey has released two studio albums, including 2020’s Graveracer and three EPs. He and his wife, Nadine Lewington , tied the knot in 2009 and have since welcomed two children.

MacIntyre portrayed recurring character Sheriff Liz Forbes throughout the vampire drama. She’s also appeared in April Apocalypse , Eve and an episode of Little Fires Everywhere . The Kyle XY alum has a robust resume as a producer and writer as well. She’s both written and directed episodes of Casual , The Originals and Legacies . The Michigan native has been married to cinematographer Cary Lalonde since 2007. MacIntrye teamed up with TVD creator Julie Plec once again, this time to adapt the Vampire Academy into a TV series for Peacock. She serves as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Plec. The new series, announced in May 2021, will bring author Richelle Mead ’s book universe to life.

Ian Somerhalder is known for his role as Damon Salvatore.
When Damon first arrived at Mystic Falls, he caused trouble for others and typically did whatever he wanted without any regard for consequences.
Over the course of the show, Damon formed friendships with Bonnie and Alaric.
Somerhalder starred on a vampire-centric Netflix show called "V Wars."
He played Dr. Luther Swann on the show, which was based on comics by Jonathan Maberry and Alan Robinson. It was canceled after one season .
In addition, Somerhalder quietly married "Twilight" actress Nikki Reed in 2015 and they have one child together. They welcomed daughter Bodhi Soleil in 2017 .
Kat Graham charmed fans as Bonnie Bennett, the town's resident witch.
Bonnie was best friends with Elena and Caroline. She often acted as a mediator between humans and supernatural beings (particularly those living on the Other Side).
In addition to acting, Graham is also a singer.
She dropped her debut album, "Roxbury Drive," in 2015. Two years later, she released "Love Music Funk Magic," which featured feel-good, upbeat tracks.
Graham showcased her style by collaborating with the brand Foster Grant for her own collection of sunglasses.
In 2018, the actress starred in the Christmas movie "The Holiday Calendar." The 31-year-old also voiced the character April O'Neil on the animated Nickelodeon show "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
Candice King (then Candice Accola) starred as perfectionist Caroline Forbes.
Caroline went from a high school cheerleader to a vampire. She later married Stefan and became a surrogate mother to Alaric's twin daughters, Lizzie and Josie.
She married The Fray member Joe King in 2014 and they have two children.
Candice went on to reprise her role as Caroline on "The Originals," the "TVD" spin-off that focused on Klaus Mikaelson and his family.
The actress welcomed her first child named Florence May King in January 2016 . In December 2020, she and her husband welcomed a daughter named Josephine June King .
Matt Donovan — one of the few characters who managed to remain a human on "TVD" — was played by Zach Roerig.
He started out as a high school jock, but later became a sheriff in Mystic Falls.
Roerig reprised his role as Matt Donovan on "Legacies," the "Originals" spin-off.
The 35-year-old played Pulse on the Fox show "The Gifted" and guest-starred on CBS' "God Friended Me."
Aside from appearing on "Legacies," he also stars on a new USA Network show called "Dare Me," which is based on a book by Megan Abbott.

The CW's "Legacies" marks the third show in which Davis stars as Alaric Saltzman.
"Legacies" focuses on Klaus and Hayley's teenage daughter Hope, who attends The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted — where Alaric is the headmaster.
The show got renewed for season three in 2020.
Vicki Donovan — Matt's sister — was portrayed by Kayla Ewell.
She became a vampire during season one, but didn't last too long.
Ewell is good friends with Candice King, and the two have their own podcast together.
Their podcast is called " Directionally Challenged" and it's about "realigning your internal compass."
Ewell has been married to actor Tanner Novlan since 2015. They welcomed their first child together , a daughter named Poppy Marie Novlan, in July 2019.
Sara Canning played Jenna Sommers — also known as Aunt Jenna.
At the start of the show, she was clueless about the existence of vampires — but eventually found out.
Canning appeared as Katherine Drew on The CW's new show "Nancy Drew."
Fans might have seen Canning as Jacquelyn on Netflix's "A Series of Unfortunate Events." The actress also appeared on the series "Van Helsing" in 2018.
Michael Malarkey's Enzo didn't join the show until season five — but he became an important character.
Enzo later dated Bonnie, but fans were distraught when he was killed by Stefan on season eight.
Malarkey is a musician and actor.
After "TVD," Malarkey starred on Crackle's drama series "The Oath." He recently starred on History's "Project Blue Book," which explored UFO-related incidents. It was canceled after two seasons .

Marguerite MacIntyre starred as Caroline's mother, Liz Forbes.
She cared deeply about Caroline, even though her daughter might have found her overbearing at times.
MacIntyre appeared on one episode of Hulu's "Little Fires Everywhere."
Aside from that, the actress hasn't participated in films or TV series since "TVD" ended, except for a short film.

TVD fans who are wondering what the cast is doing now need to look no further.
Nina Dobrev
The main star of The Vampire Diaries didn't really stick around until the end, choosing to leave the show after six seasons. Nina Dobrev did come back for the finale, however, to give Elena the ending she deserved after she had one of the worst TV exits in season 6 . She has been busy since, partaking in many projects.
Dobrev has starred in more than one movie, including the Netflix hit Love Hard and the 2022 movie Redeeming Love. She also played Clem in a CBS sitcom called Fam. Nina is in a happy relationship with a professional snowboarder Shaun White and posted more recently about being in The Bricklayer, which seems to push her into action waters. She also won the Best Director Award for her film, The One, at the Mammoth Film Festival.
Ian Somerhalder
This Vampire Diaries alumn has not been acting much since wrapping up the series. The actor has been seen in a TV series V-Wars as Luther Swann in 2019. Other than that, the actor has been focusing on his family. In 2015, he married the actress Nikki Reed, a Twilight alumn, and together they have a daughter named Bodhi.
Ian has also been busy becoming an entrepreneur. Not many people know that Somerhalder started a bourbon brand with his on-screen brother and real-life friend, Paul Wesley. Sentimentally, they decided to call it "Brother's Bond Bourbon" - a nod to their on-screen brotherly bond, and it was recently awarded the title "Best Bourbon" by Rolling Stone magazine.
Paul Wesley
Somerhalder's business partner, Paul Wesley, has been more present on TV since wrapping up TVD . He starred as Tucker Reed in a television series named Tell Me A Story and has added more roles to his resume. Recently, he got an exciting role as James T. She also has a role in the movie After We Collided, and in 2021, she appeared in the Christmas movie Christmas in Tune .
In 2014, she married Joe King, a member of the band The Fray, and she is stepmother to two kids from his previous marriage, as well as a mother to two kids of their own. She co-hosts a podcast called Directionally Challenged along with her former TVD co-star, Kayla Ewell.
Steven R. McQueen
McQueen briefly appeared on the TVD spin-off Legacies, appeared in a Hallmark movie called Home By Spring, a Netflix documentary called Medal Of Honor, and a movie, The Warrant.
He has been supporting the Thirst Project, which is a nonprofit organization aiming to bring fresh and safe drinking water to communities where it's not available. He also supports an organization called TECHO, which helps fight extreme poverty in Latin America. He is a very private person and outside of his volunteer work, he doesn't share much of his life on social media.
Matthew Davis
Everyone's favorite history teacher has since appeared regularly on Legacies since 2018, making him one of the few actors who appeared in all three shows - TVD , The Originals , and Legacies . He appeared in Christmas Wishes And Mistletoe Kisses but has otherwise not been seen in any other projects.
He married actress Kiley Casciano in 2018 and their first child, a daughter named Ripley, was born in 2020. His second daughter, Dorothy Lavender, was born in January 2022. Davis is seemingly focusing on his family life while actively starring in Legacies , reprising his role of Alaric Saltzman.

Zach Roerig
Zach Roerig has appeared in some smaller films, as well as guest-starred on Legacies, and had a role in a TV series, Dare Me. He also filmed a Christmas movie in 2021 called A Christmas To Savour.
Roerig has a daughter, Fiona, with his ex, Alanna Turner. He was awarded sole custody because of his ex's incarceration and he seems to be a rather private person. After he was romantically linked to two of his co-stars, Accola and Nathalie Kelley, the latter who played the best villain of TVD season 8 , Sybil. If his social media presence is anything to go by, it doesn't look like he's romantically involved with anyone at the moment.
Michael Malarkey
Even though he joined the show later on in season 5, Malarkey was a fan favorite, especially due to his romantic connection to Bonnie. The actor has been busy ever since - starring in The Oath and Project Blue Book . Elena Gilbert ( Nina Dobrev ), the protagonist of The Vampire Diaries , had a difficult time since the beginning of the series. Elena met and ended up in a love triangle with the vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore after her parents perished in a car accident, which played out throughout the course of the series.
After season six, Dobrev left the show but returned for the series finale in 2017. Following that, she starred in the 2017 remake of Flatliners alongside Elliot Page and featured in Run This Town , and Lucky Day . Additionally, she was also featured on the CBS sitcom Fam , which was canceled after only one season. Dobrev most recently appeared in the Netflix rom-com Love Hard , in which she played an unlucky girl in love with Jimmy O. Yang ( Crazy Rich Asians ). Paul Wesley - Stefan Salvatore
Paul Wesley portrays Stefan, the brooding vampire, and younger Salvatore. Stefan is depicted as a Golden Boy because of his high morale, compassion, generosity, and nobility, which contrasts with his brother. He does, however, have a dark alter ego known as "The Ripper."

In addition to television, Wesley performed in plays such as Zurich , Mary Shelley's Frankenstein , and Cal in Camo with Stranger Things star, David Harbour . Ian Somerhalder - Damon Salvatore

After The Vampire Diaries ended, Somerhalder starred as Dr. Luther Swann in V Wars , another vampire-centric Netflix series that is canceled after only one season. Since then, Somerhalder has appeared to have abandoned his acting profession in favor of focusing on his bourbon business with his TV brother, Paul Wesley. Brother's Bond Bourbon was launched early last year.
Kat Graham - Bonnie Bennett

Steven R. McQueen - Jeremy Gilbert
Steven R. McQueen played Jeremy Gilbert, Elena's troublesome younger brother, at the beginning of the series. Jeremy's journey is challenging, leading him to become a vampire hunter despite the fact that most of his loved ones are vampires.
On The Vampire Diaries spin-off, Legacies , McQueen, like Roerig, reprised his role as Jeremy. In addition to appearing on Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire , McQueen also appeared in the documentary Medal of Honor in 2018. He is most recently seen as Cal Breaker in The Warrant in 2020.
Matthew Davis - Alaric Saltzman
Alaric Saltzman, played by Matthew Davis, is a history teacher at Mystic Fall High School whose wife was wrongly accused of being murdered by Damon Salvatore. In his leisure time, Alaric was a vampire hunter, but he later became a father figure to the Gilbert children and Damon’s best friend.

Nearly 10 years to the day of her first appearance as Rebekah Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries , Claire Holt returned to Mystic Falls via an episode of Legacies — but she’s hardly the only actor to appear on multiple shows within this shared universe.
By our count, Holt is one of 28 performers to appear in major roles on at least two shows within the TVD -verse, including The Originals . She’s also part of a very exclusive group of actors to show up on all three shows, which is basically the equivalent of EGOTing as far as we’re concerned.
Let’s take a look at the other 27 actors who similarly crossed between shows. Once you’ve soaked up all that sweet synergy, drop a comment with an actor from either The Vampire Diaries or The Originals you’d like to see pop up on Legacies . Before becoming the TVD universe’s first phoenix (for as long as that lasted) on Legacies , Landon was introduced as a waiter at the Mystic Falls Grill on the penultimate episode of The Originals .

One of the busiest bees in the TVD universe, Caroline finally made her way to New Orleans for a memorable arc in the final season of The Originals . And although it wasn’t an in-person appearance, King did record voiceover for Legacies ‘ musical episode. It counts!
CASPER ZAFER
Once a mama’s boy, always a mama’s boy. Finn was introduced on The Vampire Diaries as Esther’s yes man, only to be resurrected alongside her for more wicked deeds on The Originals .

Despite the horrors he experienced during The Originals ‘ five-season run, we’ll always choose to remember Marcel as we first met him on The Vampire Diaries — crushing karaoke.
Marcel is slated to make his Legacies debut in Season 4, alongside Nathaniel Buzolic (Kol). They’ll be joined by Claire Holt (Rebekah) and Riley Voelkel (Freya).

Serial killer antics aside, there was something instantly lovable about Kai when we met him in The Vampire Diaries ‘ sixth season. And he was just as maniacal (if not more so!) when he popped up in Legacies ‘ second season for an arc that finally reunited him with the twin nieces he thought he killed years ago.
CLAIRE HOLT
“Barbie Klaus” spent several seasons raising hell on The Vampire Diaries before moseying down to New Orleans with the rest of The Originals . And now that Hope has gone full tribrid in Legacies ‘ fourth season, Rebekah is finally returning to Mystic Falls to check on her unhinged niece.
DANIEL GILLIES
A style icon from the jump, Elijah was introduced in The Vampire Diaries ‘ second season as a way to kill time until Klaus arrived. Thanks in part to Gillies’ compelling performance, however, Elijah became a fixture in the TVD -verse… until the final moments of The Originals .
DANIELLA PINEDA
Like most people who cross the Mikaelsons’ path, poor Sophie Deveraux wasn’t long for this world, surviving less than a full season of The Originals after being introduced via its backdoor pilot on The Vampire Diaries .
DANIELLE ROSE RUSSELL
We’re pretty sure that Hope Mikaelson is the first TV character to be conceived on one show ( The Vampire Diaries ), born on another ( The Originals ), then die on a third ( Legacies ). She’s kind of a crossover machine, even if Russell only actually appeared on two out of three shows.
DEMETRIUS BRIDGES
Alaric’s protege, who spent nine episodes on The Vampire Diaries and more than twice as many on Legacies , also popped up in one episode of The Originals , earning him a rare spot in the three-for-three club.
JODI LYN O'KEEFE
We were thrilled to see Lizzie and Josie’s “mombie” show up in Legacies ‘ first season, even if she was still wearing the bloody wedding dress she died in on The Vampire Diaries . It was definitely a look.
JOSEPH MORGAN
Easily the most complex character in the TVD -verse, Klaus’ arrival in The Vampire Diaries ‘ second season changed everything. And while we appreciate hearing about his after-afterlife on Legacies , we wouldn’t mind catching a glimpse of Morgan reprising his iconic character. Somehow.
One of the more tragic figures of the TVD -verse (#JusticeForCami!), this bartender/therapist was introduced via The Originals ‘ backdoor pilot on The Vampire Diaries .
One thing’s for sure: Despite being one of the few non-supernatural characters in this universe, Alaric appears to age like a vampire.
MICHAEL TREVINO
Remember when this angry young man from Mystic Falls went to fight Klaus in New Orleans and actually thought he might stand a chance? That was adorable.
NATHANIEL BUZOLIC
The cheekiest member of the Mikaelson crew, Kol spent several seasons on The Vampire Diaries before graduating to The Originals . Ironically, though, Kol is one of the few siblings who didn’t appear in the spinoff’s backdoor pilot.
Kol is slated to make his Legacies debut in Season 4, alongside Charles Michael Davis (Marcel). They’ll be joined by Claire Holt (Rebekah) and Riley Voelkel (Freya).
NINA DOBREV
In addition to pulling triple duty on The Vampire Diaries as Elena, Katherine and Amara, Dobrev also popped up on an episode of The Originals as Klaus and Elijah’s ancient crush Tatia.
PAUL WESLEY
It was no “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” but true historians remember what a big deal it was for The Vampire Diaries ‘ resident hero to guest-star on an episode of The Originals back in 2016.
PHOEBE TONKIN
Given everything Hayley went through on The Originals — from her pregnancy to her marriage to her (gulp!) untimely demise — it’s hard to believe she was originally introduced as a potential love interest for Tyler on The Vampire Diaries .
REBECCA BREEDS
We thought we’d seen the last of Originals troublemaker Aurora de Martel when Klaus rolled her body up in a carpet and… just kind of forgot about her. But this tenacious baddie proved us wrong by resurfacing on Legacies as a key member of the Triad.
RILEY VOELKEL
This all-powerful witch went from being the sister that the Mikaelsons didn’t know they had… to the aunt that Hope couldn’t live without. Freya was also the first Mikaelson sibling to appear on Legacies — not that there are many of them left to do so.
SEBASTIAN ROCHE
Some daddy issues run so deep, they can’t possibly be resolved in one series — hence Mikael popping up in both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals .
STEVEN R. MCQUEEN
It was teased in The Vampire Diaries ‘ series finale that Jeremy would have a future with the Salvatore School, a promise that paid off in Legacies ‘ first season when he saved Rafael and Landon from a vicious forest beast.
SUMMER FONTANA
After playing Hope for all of The Originals ‘ fourth season (plus a quick cameo in Season 5), Fontana made a most unexpected appearance in the third season of Legacies as part of a Star Wars -inspired drug trip. It’s a long story.
ZACH ROERIG
It’s an unwritten rule in the TVD -verse that token human Matt Donovan must be protected at all costs, which probably explains how he managed to survive for eight seasons on The Vampire Diaries — not to mention those visits to The Originals and Legacies .

The beloved supernatural teen drama The Vampire Diaries was first introduced to TV audiences back on September 10, 2009 and lasted until May 2017, airing 171 episodes over the course of eight successful seasons. Although the series’ ending was a sad moment for fans, the actors who made a huge impression on the show are still at it today. Take a look at how much the stars have changed since they drew blood 11 years ago today!
Nina Dobrev , 31, played Elena Gilbert on the show and was perfect in the role of a young girl who lost her parents in a car accident and ultimately falling into a heated love triangle with a vampire and his brother. She appeared on the series for six of the eight seasons and also played her character Elena’s doppelgänger ancestor Katherine Pierce and Amara, the “original” of the Gilbert women. After returning for the show’s finale, she went on to appear in more successful films and TV series such as the 2019 film Lucky Day and the CBS sitcom Fam . Now, Nina is also piquing fans interest with her new romance with Olympian Shaun White !
Ian Somerhalder , 41, played the oldest of the Salvatore vampire brothers, Damon, on the show and took on storylines that had him acting as a blood-thirsty killer and the moral pillar of his brother, Stefan and his true love, Elena . Ian appeared in all eight seasons of the series and then went on to marry Twilight star Nikki Reed , 31, and welcome their daughter Bodhi , 3, in 2017. He began playing a main role in the series V Wars in 2019.
